In addition to numerous camps staffed by our own talented teachers, we are pleased to serve as the host for several independent groups including Active Learning Adventures/USA Chess, Virginia Fishing Adventures, Young Rembrandts, Bricks 4 Kidz, K&L Sports, and Bob Foley Basketball. All grade levels listed in this booklet are for the 2013-2014 school year. SpartaCare: Afternoons

Camp Steward Afternoon Adventures is just right for your adventuresome camper. Whether go-cart racing, moon-bouncing, or laser-tagging, the possibilities for a good time are endless at Camp Steward. Afternoons are action-packed with off-campus field trips or in-house visits from local entertainers.

Does your child need lunch before or after a camp or class? Your camper can bring his or her own lunch, and supervision will be provided between 12 – 1 p.m. in the Lower School Dining Commons. Steward staff members will escort campers to/from the buildings between camps and lunch.

Do you need childcare after another Steward afternoon camp? SpartaCare is here to help! The program is available for campers who are enrolled in a Summer Experience camp during the week they are registered for SpartaCare. Supervision will be provided as late as 5:30 p.m. Steward staff members will pick up campers from classes and camps and escort them to SpartaCare.

Academic Camps Excellent adventures await our youngest campers. Whether they are honing their fine motor skills or getting acclimated for the upcoming school year, these camps are designed to exercise the young body and mind.

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes This camp will focus on strengthening the rising junior kindergartner’s fine and gross motor skills, incorporating music, movement, and multisensory activities using a variety of materials. This is a process-oriented class that will promote essential school readiness skills including cutting, gluing, tracing shapes, and much more. This camp is limited to eight campers. Instructors: Sarah Newcomb and Meg Zehmer Grade: JK Dates: July 29 – August 2 Time: 9 – 11:30 a.m. Cost: $250

Rock, Scissors, Paper Get ready for some fun! The focus of this busy two-week program is to strengthen visual, fine motor, and general school-readiness skills. A wide variety of multimedia activities and interactive play will be incorporated daily. This camp is designed for children who are entering kindergarten or first grade in the fall. The program is staffed by a learning specialist/ kindergarten teacher and a registered occupational therapist. Rock, Scissors, Paper is limited to ten students. Kindergarten Discovery Camp Here’s a fun way for children entering Steward’s kindergarten class to learn about school in a play-oriented environment. The week-long activities will help students feel comfortable in a new setting while being introduced to the routines of kindergarten. Children will explore campus, meet new classmates, and interact with faculty. This camp serves as a great way to welcome your child into The Steward School community. Math Brains At Work

Step Up To Success

This exciting program led by Steward teachers Jay Parrish and Sabra Willhite is designed to immerse children in focused reading and writing activities. This two-week camp addresses the literacy needs of children at all levels of ability. Highlights of the camp will include opportunities to read books, recipes, craft directions, and poems; reading instruction designed to build decoding skills, fluency, comprehension, and an understanding of how to choose appropriate reading material (“just right” books); writing instruction focused on the quality of storytelling and the mechanics of writing; and daily word work to build skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, and handwriting. This camp specializes in individual, small-group, and whole-group instruction with a low teacher-to-child ratio.

Led by Steward teacher Mary Ann Taylor, this one-week camp is filled with games and activities that will engage every child’s math brain! Whether your child struggles or soars with math, this camp is differentiated for various levels. The best way to learn and practice math is by using concrete materials, manipulatives, and real-life situations, and a fun, effective way to do this is through playing math games. At the end of the week, each camper will take home a folder full of learning games and manipulatives. First and second graders will get excited about math as they build skills and confidence. Math brains are the best!

This two-week math and language camp will help ease your child’s transition from second to third or third to fourth grade. Taught by Steward third-grade teachers Nancy Loyd and Jane Whitely, this camp will present students with the math and language arts concepts that will help them become better readers, writers, and mathematical thinkers for the new school year. The curriculum includes practice of addition and subtraction facts or multiplication and division facts through the use of games, manipulatives, and art activities; development of problemsolving and logic strategies that will help with word problems; reading comprehension skills that will be introduced through award-winning literature and nonfiction topics; and proofreading and editing skills in conjunction with writing activities.

The Math/Science Bridge

Middle School Language Arts

Summer is not a time for your child to forget everything learned during the school year! Let them have fun and “bridge” the summer gap between May and September. This two-week math and science camp, taught by Steward teacher Ron Coles, is designed for rising fifth and sixth graders. Students will review, refresh, and enrich math skills by emphasizing basic operations, decimal/fraction relationships, and word problems. Science activities will focus on the five steps of the scientific method in solving problems and conducting experiments. Students will also engage in hands-on activities that combine science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) principles in exciting experiments. They will use basic, everyday materials to design solutions for challenges and will have opportunities to visit the new Bryan Innovation Lab.

This camp, led by Middle School English teacher Margaret Maclin, is designed specifically for Middle School students. The session provides five full days of enrichment in reading, writing, vocabulary development, research methods, and study skills. Each day, students will enjoy a wide variety of hands-on activities including an Internet scavenger hunt, a vocabulary relay race, and the production of a camp newspaper to be published at the end of the session. During the camp, each student will learn the SQ3R method of active reading, complete a group research assignment with documentation, and finish one of the books required for summer reading. This camp is strongly recommended for students who desire a structured time for daily reading, completion of at least one required summer reading book, and/ or who will be new to Steward in the fall.

Preparing for High School Writing and Reading During this class, students will focus on academic, formula writing. In addition to completing several fiveparagraph essays, they will explore the writing process, complete multiple drafts of their writing, and learn the skills of editing and revising. Basic mechanical, grammatical, and usage rules will be reviewed. This class is intended for beginning writing students, those who need extra help with their writing, or those new to the Steward Upper School. Tutoring Gain Skills and Confidence in Core Skills! The summer months are an optimal time to strengthen academic weaknesses and to maintain the skills taught during the school year. Qualified tutors from the Center for Advancement of Learning (CAL) provide individualized instruction in one-on-one sessions to remediate difficulties in the core areas of reading, writing, math, or foreign language. Organization and study skills development are stressed during the tutoring sessions. Parents will receive a written report from the child’s tutor upon completion of the sessions. Tutors are available to work with students from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

Note: All required tutoring must be completed by August 16, 2013. Please contact Charlene Wilton, Director of CAL, to arrange tutoring by calling 804-565-2314. Creative Computing Scratch is a simple drag-and-drop programming language developed at MIT. The Scratch curriculum is designed to engage students in creative computing and give them opportunities to develop computational thinking skills. Steward’s Technology Coordinator Robin Ricketts will guide campers in using Scratch to create animation, video games, digital stories, and music. Campers will also have the chance to use programs such as WeDo Robotics and MaKey MaKey circuit boards. Animals of the World Drawing Workshop

The Landscape and Still Life in Pastel

An exciting workshop for artists who love animals! This adventure will take the campers to different continents and habitats all over the globe. Using various drawing tools, artists will learn tips and techniques to bring each creature to life. We will even spend time learning to create animals using cartooning skills. From fur and tails to feathers and scales, this workshop is sure to excite the animal enthusiast!

Looking for an art class full of creative energy? This is it! During this weeklong program, young artists will explore the exciting medium of chalk pastel while creating one-of-a-kind masterpieces. Students will learn about design, composition, lighting, and color as they produce beautiful landscapes and interesting still life masterpieces. Every day we will produce poster-size pastel works of art suitable for displaying throughout your home!

Catching Some Air – Wings, Wheels, and More During this workshop, we will explore all things that catch air in a variety of media. Summer Vacation . . . Let the Adventures Begin

Drawing Classes for Kids – Beginner to Intermediate

Summer may be hot and humid, but this workshop will be cool and creative! Pack your bags, load your car, take flight, and join us for an amazing ’round-the-world vacation! We will take in the sights of major cities, visiting London, China, France, and Korea, and create landmarks from each location. We finish our adventure with a virtual stop at a favorite amusement park where we will draw an awesome poster of a cool roller-coaster. We will also spend time drawing funny cartoons related to our vacation adventures.

For every young artist who loves to draw, this week will be chock-full of unique subjects. Students will learn about the concepts of line, shape, form, value, pattern, and composition. We will spend a significant amount of time learning about the importance of color and its impact on every masterpiece.

Medieval Castles . . . Art from Long Ago Inspired by majestic castles around the world, this awesome workshop will give every child the chance to create amazing art! Our journey through medieval times will include dragons, knights, princesses, and more. Artists will learn to draw a variety of characters and items from this era such as knights in armor, jesters juggling, jousters, and catapults. Two of the projects will be large posters—one of a fiery dragon and another of a large castle and moat. Boys and girls alike will enjoy this exciting workshop filled with adventure from long ago! Arts Camps through The Steward School Jewelry Making

Arts and Crafts

During this week-long camp, students will learn how to create beautiful, handmade jewelry. In this intensive beading class, campers will learn jewelry-making techniques and complete at least three projects, including earrings, bracelets, and necklaces using pearls, crystals, and glass beads. After the camp ends, students will have supplies to continue making jewelry. Previous students are welcome—they can always learn something new!

It’s summertime and that means summer crafts! Campers will create several summery projects during a week of craft camp. Students will work each morning on creating gifts and decorations with a summer theme. Students will also have the opportunity to express themselves by creating their own projects from the “crafty” table. The camp will culminate with an art display and reception for parents on Friday.

Glass Fusion and Clay Let’s fuse some fun! Taught by two Steward art teachers, this two-week camp integrates two types of media to encourage each participant’s creativity. Campers will first learn hand-building skills and clay-work techniques. They will then use these new skills to incorporate glass into their masterpieces. Fusing glass is an exciting process that everyone will enjoy. Ready, Set, Drum! Campers will join Steward’s master drummer, John McAlister, as they take a musical journey through the world of drums. Students will have the opportunity to explore various types of drumming, beginning with basic snare drum techniques and progressing to application on the drum set. Areas covered will include drum circle, basic reading skills, and rudiments. With a solid foundation in the basics, campers will then progress to the drum set where they’ll cover grooves such as rock, jazz, blues, and Latin. The innovation is just beginning! Your child can be one of the first to experience hands-on learning in our new Bryan Innovation Lab.

CSI: Steward Edition From the observational skills of Sherlock Holmes to the cyberespionage techniques of Homeland Security, come learn all about the “cool” factor of the field of forensic science. Students will learn how to collect and examine evidence left behind at crime scenes, from fingerprints to hair fibers, and use scientific equipment including computer analysis, microscopes, and a real polygraph (lie detector) test. Campers will be summoned to a staged crime scene to participate in fact finding and evidence gathering in the hope of solving the crime. Through biology, chemistry, mathematics, and deductive reasoning, they will work with fellow campers to weigh the evidence and apply their findings in the quest for the culprit. A field trip to the State Consolidated Crime Lab in the Virginia Biotechnology Park is included in this week. Results of the investigation will be shared in a public forum for friends and family on Friday.

Spartan Advanced Basketball Skills Clinic for Middle Schoolers Is your middle schooler motivated to take his or her game to the next level? Run by former Division I Player Adam Lonon, this intense clinic is anything but your ordinary summer camp. The clinic is for serious basketball players looking to elevate their game. Comprised of two-hour grueling segments, advanced workouts stress the fundamental elements of the game. Through game simulation drills, players are able to incorporate and apply learned concepts into their overall play. Boys can score a great summer experience by attending the all-new Steward Soccer Camp! They will learn all the important skills of the game such as passing, shooting, heading, trapping, and possession play. This camp is led by Steward Middle School boys soccer coaches Tom Funkhouser and EJ Watkins, a former college soccer player who has coached all ages and all skill levels. Camp will begin each day with a skill of the day, followed by technical training (fundamentals or skill games), and finally some team play that culminates in a champions’ league round-robin tournament at the end of the week. Campers will enjoy a week filled with soccer, fun, and a great athletic experience!

Varsity Baseball Coach Bruce Secrest brings the best of baseball training to Steward this summer. Players will work on throwing and pitching techniques, hitting fundamentals, base-running, and infield and outfield play. With soft-toss and tee stations, players will refine their batting skills and learn to slide safely and effectively. Do you have spirit? Let’s hear it! Catch the “spirit of cheering” for a week of fun with Steward Cheerleading Coach Melissa Ellyson. Campers will learn not only cheers and dances, but also will work on the fundamentals of cheering including basic motions, jumps, and key stunts with an emphasis on stunt safety. The students will have a chance to showcase what they learn as they perform a mini-routine for parents and guests during camp week.

K&L Sports For an all-day adventure, look no further than the week-long camps at K&L Sports! Steward Tennis Coach Kurt Hammerschmidt and his family run this incredible camp from their home in Montpelier. Camp activities include tennis, basketball, baseball, beach volleyball, horseshoes, swimming, football, soccer, whiffleball, dodgeball, kickball, frisbee, hiking, and other field and team games. At K&L Sports Camp, your child will find that sportsmanship and team camaraderie are just as important as skill level and self-confidence. The directors maintain a 6-to-1 student-to-pro ratio, which guarantees an extensive and intensive workout during the course of the camp. The camp tuition includes a t-shirt, a pizza party on Friday, and lots of daily and end-of-camp prizes. Introductory Video Game Creation Starting with basic commands, campers will be taught in step-bystep progression how to build a game that they design. Animation Creation Using Scratch software developed by MIT, participants are guided step-bystep through the basics while creating their own 3-D animated story with a focus on fun. Campers will select from a gallery of animated characters called sprites. They will teach sprites to walk, run, dance, turn around, and respond to keyboard input. Students will learn to change backgrounds, add music, play catch, and other cool features. Throughout this course, they will learn basic programming techniques while broadening imagination and creativity skills. Advanced Video Creation: Mobile Apps Students will use GameMaker Studio to create a cell phone/tablet video game in the style of “Doodle Jump” that they can play on Smartphones, iPads, iPhones, Kindles, and other tablets. Campers will be taught how to create characters, make them move by tilting the phone, jump between platforms, manipulate objects by touching the screen, and much more. The students will create different levels, a high-score table, and enemies and will learn how to get games onto various devices.

Meet the local master of basketball—Bob Foley. Bob has coached boys and girls at every level of the game for the past 40 years, including Division I college level where he won over 400 games and coached in ten

NCAA tournaments. He has coached at Colorado, Penn State, Providence College, and the University of Richmond, and currently teaches a class at VCU in sports leadership and administration. As a chef for Meriwether Godsey in Steward’s dining services, Anton spends his days meeting the culinary needs of teenagers, so he is a survivor of the ultimate food challenge! With a degree from Chicago’s School of Culinary Arts and years of experience as an executive chef at clubs and resorts, he will provide a fresh food perspective and open up a whole new world in the kitchen for his campers. Kurt is Steward’s varsity tennis coach and a four-time All-American in tennis at Ferris State University and winner of the university’s first-ever NCAA Championship in 1989. He traveled the world playing tennis professionally after college. He holds five national titles and 15 state titles in Michigan, Maryland, and Virginia in singles and doubles. Before creating K & L Sports with his wife Lisa, he was the Head Tennis Professional and Director of Junior Tennis at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland.

Camp Policies Registration and Confirmation Registration for the Summer Experience begins on February 1, 2013. Camps and class sizes are limited, so be sure to register early to reserve your space. All registration fees must be paid in full at the time of registration. Registrations will not be processed without payment. A confirmation email will be sent to all campersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; parents/guardians upon receipt of registration. An informational letter including drop-off and pick-up locations, supply lists (if necessary), and other pertinent information will be sent to campers along with the confirmation email. Please keep your receipt. For additional or specific information, please contact Summer Experience staff at the emails listed in our Resident Expert section.

Cancellation of Classes

There are minimum class sizes for all camps and programs. The Steward School reserves the right to cancel any course, program, or activity as necessary. In such cases, a full refund will be made. Tuition is refundable only if The Steward School cancels a course or program. No refunds will be made for individuals who are asked to leave a camp or program because of behavior. No refunds are given for academic camps for any reason other than cancellation by The Steward School.

Unless we have a written letter to the contrary, The Steward School exercises the right to use any photographs taken of individuals participating in the Summer Experience in its promotional publications.

Allergies and Medications Important notice to parents of campers with allergies: The Steward School camps are NOT peanut, wheat, dairy, or allergen free. We make every reasonable accommodation for campers with allergies. If your child is allergic to certain foods, we ask that you provide a snack each day.

Payment Fees for all Summer Experience programs must be paid in full at the time of registration. Questions If you have any questions about our camps, please email them to camps@stewardschool.org. One of our friendly camp administrators will get back to you as quickly as possible.

If your child is in a camp where cooking or food preparation is part of the curriculum, please discuss your childâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dietary needs with the teacher. Children who require the use of an Epi-pen for life-threatening emergencies will be asked to keep their Epi-pen with them at all times (a small backpack or fanny pack works well). Our license from the Department of Social Services does not permit us to distribute medications of any kind. However, most camp counselors and coaches are trained in CPR and first aid.
