“WE WON!!!”

WE WON!! I was so thrilled that Stradbroke Library/Post Office won a prestigious national library award at the Edinburgh EDGE conference 2016. We had been shortlisted for the social category award so I attended the conference. It was nerve wracking waiting for the results. I had to sit through the Gala dinner until they announced the winners. Luckily there was white wine on the table to help me through! It was an amazing achievement for us in Stradbroke especially if you think that last year Manchester City library won one of these awards and this year it was Stradbroke library, a small rural library in Suffolk. The judges comments were:

‘Re-thinking services is at the heart of a successful, modern library. Stradbroke Library Post Office exemplifies how libraries can be the heart of the community, and the vital role both libraries and post offices play in enhancing community life and wellbeing. The increasing number of visits and issues, not to mention the increase in non-users visiting the library, is testimony to the success of the initiative. Through co-location and working in partnership with the local community and by looking to increase its income, Stradbroke embodies a forward-looking and engaged way of working that is as exciting as it is commendable. Many congratulations to all involved and for their hard work.’ Back to reality and running the Library/Post Office/Café… more info on what’s happening this month on page 18! Maureen John

We welcome you to join us – our activities for April

Come And Meet Each Other

Spring After the long and sometimes extremely wet winter in the last few days we have seen the evidence that spring has arrived. Farmers have now started working the land, all around the village we hear the sound of lawn mowers as happy gardeners, having oiled their machines, delight in seeing the grass cut. Without the benefit of our calendar the birds have instinctively begun nest building, This afternoon from my vantage point in a friends conservatory I have been watching a pair of magpies as they busily bring in twigs to build their nest. The industrious birds appear to have almost completed their task, and whilst at present they are highly visible soon the tree will burst into leaf and hide their industry. One of the pleasures of living in our country is that the weather and seasons are always a good topic of conversation. It is not surprising that the poets have compared the natural seasons with stages of human life. John Keats in his work ‘The Human Seasons’ writes. “Four seasons fill the measure of the year; There are four seasons in the mind of man.” I suspect we would all agree that human life is like the weather: at best unpredictable, a combination of happiness & sadness; health & illness even for some people poverty & prosperity. All of these experiences mould and shape us into the characters we become. Our personal beliefs also affect our relationship with others and the way we perceive the world around us. Christians believe that God created our universe and gives equality to all human life. If we are wishing to develop a well-balanced character we must give consideration to what we believe and who we believe in. Spring is the time for new beginnings. Is this is the season to make a fresh start in your relationship with God?. And finally. CAN YOU HELP? Each month we host lunch for 30—40 lovely people at our Cameo Lunch Club but we are short of helpers, could you volunteer about three hours a month to help? Please contact: John Ling 388751 (Church Elder) Jackie Hughes 384112 (Church Administrator)

All Saints – A message from Rev. Susan Dear friends & neighbours, I do hope that April doesn’t follow the saying of April showers, because I think we have had enough rain in February and March to last all year! I was asked to go into Beavers last month, the youngest section of Scouting, to talk about my role in the community. I did the best I could, however, I felt really inadequate talking to young children about the things I do, when so much is not really tangible, and some things just too difficult to explain to a young child. I love being a part of the six communities I try to serve as parish priest but of course like most occupations, there are some things that frustrate me about it. The amount of paperwork involved in running a parish can be very time consuming; such as enabling a volunteer to be a church visitor or go into school to take part in assemblies etc. But then again, we have to do all we can to make sure both volunteers and those they minister to are kept safe. Another frustration is that with so many facets to what I do, time runs out and I find I cannot do some of the things I would want to do, and I cannot spend enough time on others. I was listening to a businessman on the radio who said there is not enough time in business now to procrastinate; it takes time to think and talk, to come up with good and creative ways of doing things. I think he was right; no one seems to have enough time, to take time, to think things through, to ponder questions, issues and situations we are dealing with. The result is that sometimes we make bad judgements, wrong choices, which add to any stress we already have. So I apologise for the times when I don’t seem to have time to do the things you expect me to do as your vicar. And I praise God that he did not call me to do everything on my own and in my own strength, instead he calls me as he does you, to do the best we can for our friends and neighbours in the communities we live, to try to make good choices for them, those who will come after us, and for our planet and leave the rest to him. May God bless you this month with showers of his love, Susan Susan Loxton

Life in the Legion—The Royal British Legion (Stradbroke and District Branch) From the Branch Chairman’s Desk. John Farmer C.B.E., past National Chairman of The Royal British Legion, was the guest speaker at the midday monthly meeting of the branch held at Laxfield King’s Head, attended by eighteen members and guests. I presided and gave him the usual vote of thanks on behalf of all present. During the business part of the meeting reports were given by the Branch Secretary/Treasurer Bernard Mills and the report on the county was given by Ken Rowbotttom, the County Vice-Chairman, who is a member of the Fressingfield Branch. A short welfare report was given by our officer Joyce Cooper. The forthcoming annual branch Dinner and Concert were discussed. The next branch meeting is on Thursday, April 14th. to be held Laxfield King’s Head starting at 11.30 am when the guest speaker will be Brigadier Alasdair Wilson O.B.E., his subject being “The Order of St.John” Members please attend if you are able. Michael Burton, Branch Chairman.

W.I. The March meeting of our W.I. saw 36 members and 6 visitors coming through the doors all eager for a chat and to hear from our speaker Mark Mitchels who was to talk about the history of theatre in the 15th and 16th centuries, focusing mainly on the Globe theatre made famous by Shakespeare and his writings. The assembled folk were greeted by Gill and a lusty rendition of Jerusalem rang out boosted by the welcome baritone addition from the gentlemen visitors. Birthday posies were presented to Rose Tomson, Sue Gray and Joyce Lee and the hostesses Jennifer Chetwynd and Annie Harbrow were complimented and thanked for their contribution. Gill and Jane gave us an update on the business and notices with Gill welcoming new member Carol Bird and Jane making us laugh about her encounter with a gentleman who thought she was fly tipping rather collecting rubbish. Now we settled down as Mark was welcomed and invited to start his talk. It appears that in the 15th 16th centuries the favourite entertainments were , bear baiting and public executions in the morning followed by a trip across the Thames to the south bank and the red light area, which is where the theatres could be found, for their afternoon delights. The trip across the river was something the ladies enjoyed as the boatmen were a pretty rough tough lot whose language was foul causing said ladies to swoon in delighted horror, strange!. Most theatres were open to the elements, maybe a village or town market place where a platform could be erected at one end so that all could come and see the performance. The Globe theatre was custom built in the round and although originally without a roof it had plenty of tiered seating. At each section stood a boy with a box collecting pennies from the audience and these boxes were taken to an office before the performance started, for security, and this became known as the box office. The crowds who stood in the main area were there for the full length of the performance, no way out no conveniences, if nature called it was answered on the spot, delightful. Mark took us through the history of the Globe and other theatres, regaled us with some gruesome tales and generally held us enthralled throughout his presentation and we were fascinated and horrified in equal measures. After a question and answer session Jean Morgan thanked Mark for treating us to a fascinating history lesson enjoyed by all and refreshments were served by our hostesses. A little more business was conducted as we enjoyed our refreshments and the raffle was drawn to complete our evening. We were reminded that we have two sets of indoor kurling stones that are available for hire so please let us know if you would like to try them Prue Rush

The Stradbroke Over 60s Our April meeting will be on the 7th, when we have a gentleman from the Rural Coffee Caravan coming, and on the 21st we are holding our AGM followed by a game of Hoy, where we shall be giving everyone this years programme of events and trips planned for them. Stradbroke Primary School Although a short half term of just five weeks- it has been a busy one at Stradbroke Primary with lots of events going on. We recently had a special “Picnic in Space” lunch and themed writing day for the children. Our pupils are fantastic writers and always respond really well to special days which encourage them to produce extended pieces of creative writing. Classes have had fun learning about topics including Space, the explorers Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus, the Anglo Saxons and the Romans. Classes have been on special educational visits to Norwich Castle to learn more about Roman Britain and to Norwich Puppet Theatre to design and create their own space themed puppets. The children were set a special project over half term on “Inventors and Explorers”. They always find interesting and innovative ways to present their work including presentations, dioramas, essays and even through designing websites! We have appointed Miss Hannah Legood as our permanent Head of School. You may remember Hannah won the “Excellence in Teaching Award” at Suffolk County Council’s Raising the Bar Awards last year. She is a very talented teacher and we are delighted that she is joining our leadership team. We are delighted to report that we had a Church Inspection this term which acknowledged the Outstanding provision made in our school, especially in distinctiveness and effectiveness and leadership and management. We are very pleased with the report and the acknowledgement made of the excellent practice happening at Stradbroke Primary School. Melanie Barrow, Executive Headteacher

Stradbroke High School Stradbroke High School’s production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. Across four performances to audiences totalling over 500 people, the whole cast exuded total confidence, expression and sensitivity in their convincing interpretation of this much loved musical. The audiences’ expectations were exceeded by a number of polished and mature performances which enhanced the story including those by several senior members of the school with Jessica Rutherford and Courtney Chilvers as narrators, Marty Gionis as Pharaoh and Joseph Most as Joseph. The diminutive Mr Potipher was expertly portrayed by Joshua Watson and his ebullient wife brilliantly cast in Alice Gooch. Vocal solos from younger members of the cast also shone through and of particular note were those by Noah Most, Alexander Stephenson, Lily Cossey and an exquisite rendition of 'Those Canaan Days' by Charlotte Watson in Year 7. Stunning singing, entrancing harmonies, energetic dance, beautiful scenery, lighting and costume were all a testament to the talent of the pupils at the school. This talent, coupled with drama and humour was powerfully delivered with conviction whilst subtle orchestral accompaniment was provided by the musicians of the school under the watchful direction of Head of Music, Jonathan Williams. Director of the production and Head of Drama, Mrs Rachael Keeble commented: “It has been a pleasure to stage 'Joseph' at Stradbroke High School. The cast, crew and musicians, involving 20% of the school, have all developed a strong sense of camaraderie and worked tirelessly to make it a very special production. I have been so impressed with their level of commitment, focus and their professionalism throughout. In total we have performed 4 times; 2 matinee performances to our feeder primary schools and 2 evening performances, and after such an intense week of outstanding musical theatre the cast thoroughly deserve the standing ovations they received from the audiences on both nights.” Sally Clarke

Stradbroke Archive and Records Association - SARA The 1840 Tithe map of Stradbroke. The Tithe map is important to Stradbroke because following the Tithe Commutation Act of 1836 payments of tithe in the form of farm produce would be replaced by a money payment. Tithe was a tax, which was paid to the local church. This map should show at least the boundaries of woods, fields, roads and waterways and the location of buildings. However, the most important feature and the whole point of the map is the boundary for which tithe was owed. Three copies of each tithe map were made, one for the tithe commissioners, one for the Diocese and one for the Parish. The National Archives holds the tithe commissioners copy and the Suffolk Record Office holds the other two. Unfortunately, one of the copies is too badly degraded to view but thanks to Stradbroke’s History Group and Jeremy Higgins’ good memory, SRO were able to locate the other very delicate copy and agreed to conserve it and digitalise it at our request. The good news is that it is now saved for a few more years and very soon we hope to have a TIFF file in order to reproduce the map for the village to view. Stradbroke is also lucky to have had a diligent lady named Mrs Allen – probably the rectors wife – who took the time to key the map putting owners and tenants to land. It never ceases to amaze us just how fortunate Stradbroke is to have such amazing forefathers. http://www.historic-maps.norfolk.gov.uk/tithe.aspx Ann Readman

Stradbroke Cinema On Wednesday, 6th April we are showing “Song of the Sea”, 2.30 for 3.00 pm. Matinee for children, all tickets £3.00. Soft drinks and ice creams on sale in the interval. From the creators of the Academy Award®-nominated The Secret of Kells comes a breathtakingly gorgeous, hand-drawn masterpiece. Based on the Irish legend of the Selkies, Song of the Sea tells the story of the last seal-child, Saoirse, and her brother Ben, who go on an epic journey to save the world of magic and discover the secrets of their past. Pursued by the owl witch Macha and a host of ancient and mythical creatures, Saoirse and Ben race against time to awaken Saoirse’s powers and keep the spirit world from disappearing forever. As enthralling for adults as it is for children young and old, Song of the Sea is a wonder of magical storytelling and visual splendor that is destined to become a classic. On Thursday, 21st April, we are showing “Lady in a Van” 7.00 for 7.30 pm. The Bar will be open and icecreams will be on sale in the interval. Entrance is £5.50. A 2015 comedy-drama film directed by Nicholas Hytner, written by Alan Bennett, and starring Maggie Smith and Alex Jennings. It tells the true story of Mary Shepherd, an elderly woman who lived in a dilapidated van on Bennett's driveway in London for 15 years. Maggie Smith can say more in a few seconds of facial expressions than a whole page of script. Wonderful, absolutely wonderful, exquisit authenticity. Margaret Streeter

Heveningham Hall Country Fair 2016 UPDATE! This year’s Heveningham Hall Country Fair takes place on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July and it has been announced that the two-day extravaganza - which raises funds for a wide range of local good causes - will be organized solely by the Heveningham Hall Country Fair Trust. The Fair typically sees around 15,000 visitors descend on the 18th Century Estate and each year the Heveningham Hall Country Fair Trust distributes all proceeds to the local communities for village and school projects, church repairs and individual cases of need. Commenting on the organisation decision, chairwoman and charity trustee Anne Clark, said: “We have had three fantastic years of partnering with Halesworth Lions Wings & Wheels but feel the time has come for us to take back the reigns in the spirit of constantly evolving the event. Make your Will at a reduced cost in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice St Elizabeth Hospice’s Wills Month returns in May and the local charity is inviting you to make or amend your Will at a reduced cost. Throughout May, local solicitors will generously offer their time and expertise free of charge to provide a number of appointments for anyone to make or amend their Will at a reduced cost, in return for a suggested donation to St Elizabeth Hospice. St Elizabeth Hospice is extremely grateful to the solicitors and will writers who have generously offered to give up their time and expertise. Taking part in Wills month are; Attwells; Prettys Solicitors; Watkins, Stewart & Ross; Ross Coates Solicitors; Wills Plan Ltd; Haywards Solicitors; Fairweather Stephenson & Co; Blocks Solicitors; and Bates Wells & Braithwaite. Having an up to date Will is also important to ensure the people and charities you care about are looked after in the future. Felicity Rook, St Elizabeth Hospice’s Head of Fundraising, said: “Last year we raised over £5,000 through our Wills month and we hope that more people will take the opportunity to make their Will at a reduced cost this May, whilst supporting the work of the hospice by making a donation. “We are hugely grateful to the local solicitors and financial advisor offering their time free of charge to support the hospice. “Leaving a gift to the Hospice in your Will is a great way to ensure that we can continue to make a difference not only now, but in the future.” You can make or amend a basic Will, joint or mirror Will or Codicil an existing Will. Appointments will need to be booked in advance. Keeping an elderly relative out of hospital Keeping an elderly relative out of hospital is a really important goal. Neither you, nor your loved one wants to make that dreaded trip to the hospital. A set back that causes a relative to go into hospital can have more complications meaning their condition could decline rapidly, both mentally and physically. We are not saying avoid the hospital at all costs, because a trip to hospital is often necessary to receive medical care. However, no one wants to have a stay in hospital if they can help it so My Care at Home have provided some tips on how you can avoid that trip to the hospital: Follow the doctor’s orders – listen to the GP’s advice, they are professionals and know what is best for your relative Don’t ignore symptoms – If something seems to be causing your relative some pain or they don’t feel quite right, encourage them to visit their GP and get it sorted early to avoid the condition getting worse. It might be nothing, but it’s better to get it checked out. Reduce the risk of falls and accidents – keep your elderly relatives home tidy and clutter free to avoid any potential trip hazards and ensure hallways and stairs are well lit. Physical and mental activity – try to keep your relative as active as possible in order to keep the simple tasks much easier, the heart and brain are like muscles and need to be used to prevent deterioration. Healthy Diet – This will keep blood pressure and cholesterol low reducing the risk of any circulatory problems. Keeping Fluids up – please ensure your relative has plenty of drinks during the day and is drinking plenty. Dehydration can lead to urine infections which can cause confusion. Urine infections are the most common cause of hospital admission. Following those simple tips will help to keep a relative out of hospital and help keep them at home where they want to be. Claire Bewley is a Director at My Care at Home based in Stowmarket Tel: 01449 763086 www.mycare-athome.co.uk

Suffolk Walking Festival 14th May - 5th June 2016 The 2016 Suffolk Walking Festival kicks off on Saturday, 14th May and continues for three weeks until Sunday, 5th June. The varied programme of 77 themed walks across the county range in length from a gentle stroll of one mile, to a challenging 60 miles in 24 hours and will take place along Suffolk's glorious coast, through scenic, gently undulating countryside and around our medieval towns and villages. Festival Launch: Saturday,14th May 2016 at RSPB Minsmere Nature Reserve, Saxmundham IP17 3BY. The launch walk is sponsored by Suffolk Coastal District Council and will include coffee and cake from 10am, presentations at 10.30am, followed by a guided walk around the nature reserve, leaving at 11am. The annual walking festival is a partnership project supported by all of Suffolk's local authorities and is spearheaded by the Discover Suffolk project at Suffolk County Council. This year's festival launch, which is sponsored by Suffolk Coastal District Council, takes place at RSPB Minsmere on the Suffolk coast. The event will also mark the launch of Suffolk's Year of Walking, which starts in May 2016 and ends in May 2017. There are three lots of challenge walks planned, which have been sponsored by the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Mega Challenge, for the ultra fit, is a walk which will be undertaken over a 24 hour period, covering 60 miles from Lowestoft to Felixstowe. The Classic Challenge, a firm favourite among regular festival goers, is made up of five walks of between 11 and 14 miles each. As with The Mega Challenge, the route goes from Lowestoft to Felixstowe, but will be at a rather more sedate pace and spread over five days. The Mini Challenge consists of three walks of around nine miles each: Oulton Broad to Beccles, the 'Trimley Loop' and a walk ending with refreshments at the National Trust's Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge. Other walks include two stress-relieving mindfulness walks; a 'prambling' walk for parents with prams; photography, birdwatching and Pilates walks; a gentle stroll for sufferers of dementia and their carers, a walk which includes views of early marsh orchids, a speed-dating ramble and the ever-popular 'Horrible History For Families' in Ipswich. Some include a cream tea or other refreshments and all are an informal and sociable way to explore the county, meet like-minded people and to indulge in a leisure activity which benefits both body and soul. To view the full walks programme and book tickets, visit the festival website www.suffolkwalkingfestival.co.uk Brochures will be available from Suffolk tourist information centres. Karina Coghlin

Spring is definitely springing!!! March is almost two thirds of the way through and we have had some beautiful days though with frosty nights to follow. Those of you who know me will be aware that this weekend I am moving house and leaving my sensible busy working girl modern box with tiny garden for an old cottage with much to do and a huge blank canvas garden. Hopefully it won’t be a blank canvas for long as I have some beautifully drawn plans by Luke, to help me create a wonderful space to entertain and relax. But it’s a bit like Christmas, the anticipation of the lovely result is almost painful. And the temptation to buy some plants before I am properly ready is massive. But I will be good and limit myself to some more fruit bushes for my allotment instead! The RHS gives us ten top tips for this month 1. Look out for new spring shoots and protect them from slugs 2. Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes 3. Plant summer flowering bulbs. 4. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials 5. Top dress containers with fresh compost 6. Mow the lawn on dry days as needed 7. Cut back Cornus (dogwood) and Salix (willow) for colourful growth 8. Weeds start growing again. Deal with them before they take over. 9. Start feeding fish and using pond fountains for aeration. 10. As the days warm up remember to open windows in conservatories and greenhouses Happy gardening, Gill Palmer We have a whole allotment available at the moment, to be taken as a whole or as two halves. If you are unsure you could manage even that we also have some raised beds available. Please contact me for more details on 01379 388253 or email me helenpleasance@talk21.com. There is so much to do this month that once again (looks like a pattern here folks) I am behind. It’s too cold to sow seeds just yet unless you are starting them off in a greenhouse or window ledge. I believe if you can sit on the ground and not get a cold bottom then it is ok to sow. Not yet then! The ground has only just dried out enough to work with, so warmth will be a couple of weeks away at least. Peas and broad beans are quite hardy though and can be sown now and by the time the magazine is printed, the first potatoes can be planted. The list goes on and on. And on. So no time to chat, I’m off up the plot! Hope to see you there. If you would like to contribute to our allotment page, email me. We would love to hear from you. Helen Pleasance

Letters to the Editor My elderly Sister in Law is visiting us in a few weeks time, and I wondered whether anyone would be able to advise me where we can hire or borrow a wheelchair from as we would like to visit Southwold, and she is not able to walk very far. As I work nights, it would be appreciated if anyone who could help would email me on sidna.napier@btinternet.com. Many thanks, Sidna Napier (Stradbroke). Women's Cancer Charities - Coffee Morning and Cake Stall Thank you to everyone who helped on the day, to those who supported us and to everyone who could not attend but sent a donation anyway. It was lovely to see so many people and we made the brilliant sum of £260 for the cancer charities. Thank you again. Caroline Johnson I've just heard that the total made for St.Elizabeth Hospice is £994.45. Margaret Streeter

We are very lucky in Suffolk to have a very wide variety of excellent local food and drink producers and I always buy local produce and support our businesses. My Saturday mornings are often spent at local markets and I throughout the year I attend as many food fairs and markets as possible. Earlier this month I very much enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate the very best of Suffolk’s food and drink industry in the Houses of Parliament at the British Beer and Pub Association’s Parliamentary Pub Chef of the Year award ceremony. I had nominated Milan Hukal from the Dog Inn, Grundisburgh, and am delighted that he won the top award and that I was there to congratulate him. I have tasted Milan’s excellent cooking on a number of occasions at the Grundisburgh Dog and am proud and pleased that Suffolk is now the home of the Parliamentary Pub Chef of the Year. This adds to the list of prestigious awards won by many of our local food companies in Suffolk. As you may know, I am a member of the Parliamentary cross-party Energy and Climate Change Committee and in Febuary we went to Copenhagen in Denmark to see for ourselves the Danish energy system and to understand how Denmark is encouraging people to become more environmentally aware. In Denmark they have a highly diversified and efficient energy supply system with a high share of combined heat and power. Around 40% of the Danish power needs are supplied by wind power and Denmark is one of the global front runners in the development of offshore wind farms. Denmark also has an energy agreement with other members of the Nordic community such as Norway, Sweden and Germany which allows it to provide energy in conjunction with these countries and guarantees strong energy security as they are able to tap into hydroelectric power supplies. I learnt a great deal from our very informative trip to Copenhagen. The most important issue is that there is strong political commitment in Denmark to providing energy security on a long term basis. The Danish believe that there is need for a holistic, ‘whole-systems’ approach from Government and regulators in order to improve energy supply and reduce their reliance on fossil fuels. Very importantly, they have an all-party commitment to their long-term energy policy. The ultimate aim is for Denmark to produce enough renewable energy to meet domestic demand by 2050, and there is an energy agreement in place covering the period up to 2020. In Suffolk, we are rightly proud of our offshore wind farms, the nuclear power station at Sizewell, and all other low carbon energy solutions and it is important that we continue to promote more appropriately sited renewable and carbon neutral energy solutions both in Suffolk and across the UK. Across the country there is still much to be done to promote energy security to facilitate a strong energy system, and to reduce the cost of energy for the consumers. We would do well to learn from Denmark’s energy policy which has cross party consensus and provides long term energy security for their country.
