Official figures recently released by Ofsted and the Department for Education show that our pupils’ GCSE exams results at Stradbroke High School in 2015 position the school in the top 4% of all schools nationally for the value that they add to their pupils.

• • •

In all subjects, pupils of all ability make better progress than in the majority of schools. In English, pupils of all ability make above average progress. In maths, pupils of all ability make better progress than in any other school in Suffolk.

John Axtell, Deputy Head Teacher at the school, says “This data from Ofsted is testament to the high expectations that the school has for all pupils, their incredibly hard work and the commitment of their teachers in supporting their progress. Pupils leave Stradbroke High School with the best possible results enabling them to continue succeeding into the future.” Sally Clarke

Fact or Fiction? Late last year as I visited a gentleman who lives on his own and appreciates a chat. In the course of conversation he told me that he had been watching a TV series about the Bible - a number of programmes had apparently investigated some of the very old stories we find in the Old Testament, such as the Flood and Noah’s ark, and the people of Israel’s miraculous escape as they crossed the Red sea fleeing from slavery in Egypt. As the chat continued I asked what was the purpose of the programmes. Were the editors attempting to prove or disprove the authenticity of the Bible record? My friend was surprised by the question and replied that all his life 80+ years he had always assumed that the Bible was true. ‘Yes’, I responded knowing that he did not attend Church or claim to be a Christian, ‘If you believe the Bible to be true have you read it?’ Sadly my friend is one of the many who believe in an abstract way that the Bible is probably true and is of some importance yet will not take the time to investigate. The Bible is not an easy read but it is an important collection of 66 books written by 40+ authors over a period of approximately 1500 years. It is worth investigating as it contains God’s word which is applicable to all people: it tells us where we stand in relationship to our Creator and what His future plans are for the world He has created. It’s worth a read, get a modern version or invest in an up to date paraphrase written in contemporary English such as The Message by Eugene Peterson. Fact or fiction you must decide! All Saints – A message from Rev. Susan Dear friends & neighbours, February is often a month when we think about love (14th Valentine’s day). To celebrate the love between husband and wife, we are arranging a short service in which you can come and renew your marriage vows, on Saturday 13th February at 5.30pm in Mendham church followed by tea and cake. Please get in touch with me on 388493 and I will tell you what is involved and add your names to the list of couples. Of course there are many kinds of love and all should, I believe, be celebrated. We do this in various ways, one of which is to write a card or give a small gift, a kind gesture or simply saying I love you. People often talk about giving up something for Lent as part of the tradition of remembering Jesus’ time in the wilderness without food or drink. It is a good time to take a look at our own lives and consider the good, bad and ugly; maybe having a bit of a spring clean getting rid of any bad habits, checking our priorities and generally putting things right with God and one another. Lent is a good time to find out about God’s love and plan for us; maybe come along to the Lent suppers in Fressingfield, 3rd 10th &14th March or join a group exploring faith. If you would like to do any of these things please get in touch with me, I would love to hear from you. I leave you with a special prayer for Ash Wednesday: Holy God, our lives are laid open before you: rescue us from the chaos of sin and through the death of your Son bring us healing and make us whole, in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. God bless, Susan

Life in the Legion—The Royal British Legion (Stradbroke and District Branch) From the Chairman’s Desk “Life in the Legion”. The branch continues to be active. The Annual Christmas Lunch and carol singing was held at Laxfield King’s Head. In December vouchers were presented to the R.B.L. poetry competition winners at Stradbroke High School and Branch President Ted Bootle was awarded theLégion d'honneur as a D-day Veteran; the presentation to take place soon. The Annual County Conference was held at Needham Market in January and attended by the officers and by Standard Bearer Joyce Cooper. Bernard Mills was our delegate and Honorary County Vice President, yours truly. Our Annual Branch dinner to be held in Stradbroke Community Centre on Friday, April 1st, members will be receiving details in March. Our next branch meeting is on Thursday,11th. February It will be held as usual at Laxfield King’s Head starting at 11.30 am. a guest speaker is being arranged. Best wishes to all readers for 2016. Michael Burton (Branch Chairman)

W.I. December meeting Christmas came early to the Stradbroke WI as the members gathered in their finery to enjoy the Christmas supper. Mulled wine or a cranberry drink welcomed the ladies and their companions to the festivities and they were shown to their beautifully set and decorated tables ready for the excellent meal to be served by Steve Hambling and his lovely staff. All were welcomed to the evening by Gill Bird our newly elected President who had also been the main architect of the evenings presentation and activities along with her also newly elected committee, at this point all of the above had crossed fingers that all went well for their first joint effort. Dear reader it did all go well, much laughter and chatter, not to mention good food and company made sure of that. After the meal June Hampson was awarded the competition cup and Pat Marlow was presented with her 200 club winnings, and birthday buttonholes were presented to June Hampson and Phyllis Gunn. The entertainment was organised by Charmaine Cooper who organised members and friends in a WI themed rendition of the 12 days of Christmas, it was hilarious and an immediate encore was called and so we did it all again. A numbers based slightly quirky quiz followed which had us all scurrying about to present an accurate and interesting answer for instance finding 10 black teeth was answered by presenting a black comb. The raffle was drawn and Stuart Gemmill gave a vote of thanks to the committee on behalf of all present. The evening closed with everyone grovelling under their chairs to see if they had a coloured spot and could take home the plant decorating their table Prue Rush

January meeting Our January meeting began with our new President and Secretary sitting at the top table sporting L plates. By the end of a very successful evening, these could be safely dispensed with. Business was kept to a minimum with the aid of information boards on each table. Birthday buttonholes, beautifully made by our hostesses of the evening, Jane Johnson and Vivienne Goffee, were presented. Our speaker for the evening was our WI member Prue Rush, giving us an account of the second part of her journey through her nursing training. As a newly qualified Staff Nurse, she was given her uniform, including dog collar and bonnet. She told us how proud and important she felt in her new post, until, at the end of the first day on the ward, she was called urgently to an emergency in the bathroom, where she was unceremoniously dropped into a bath of cold water. She gave a very amusing account of some of the cases she dealt with, including one poor soul who was in a state of alcohol withdrawal, and had to be given a drip containing a measured amount to keep him calm. She concluded with her move back to Suffolk with twenty five years as the surgeries’ Practise Nurse. I am sure this would make a wonderful third talk, but might be a little too revealing for some people! The vote of thanks was given by Caroline Traylen. Carol Darling

Stradbroke Archive and Records Association - SARA HAPPY NEW YEAR! The launch of The Geoffrey Smith Archive has been a great success with amazing viewing numbers and interest. At the time of going to press this archive has had over 51,000 pages viewed since its launch at the end of November. SARA has had positive email interest from both inside and outside of Stradbroke and it is clear that this archive has triggered many memories and for some we hope - re-union. Approximately half of The Geoffrey Smith archive is now available to view with another 1000 images yet to come. Geoffrey’s family have shared these photographs with the village in the hope that anyone who has a memory or something to say will also share that by adding a comment at the bottom of the photographs page. Already Stradbroke’s past has been enriched by Geoffrey’s hobby undertaken with passion before digital cameras were around and when every picture taken had to be developed from film before the image could be seen. Amazing. The Geoffrey Smith Archive may be accessed from: http://www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk Ann Readman SARA

Friends of All Saint’s Church We were pleased so many people supported Gerald’s “Past and Present” slideshow, it made over £350. The dinner party club has made £450 and counting (with eating and drinking). The downside is that we have helped, to the tune of £3,388.23, towards the cost of the Roof Alarm on the Church, at the insistence of the Insurers. £900 VAT can be claimed back, but there is an annual maintenance charge of £300. Our coffers are depleted and the amount required for the repair of the roof is now even further away as we have been told that patching is no longer an option. It needs a concerted effort to apply for Heritage Lottery Funding and to do this we need inspirational ideas as to how we can use the Church building. If you are wondering about “how much money we need”, the architect told me to compare it with doing the work on ten houses!! Saturday 30th April is The Annual Church Path Plant Sale, 10am onwards. Remember the stall, please, when you are pricking out seedlings and dividing plants! Margaret Streeter Tel: 384869. Carol Darling caroldon01@gmail.com Margaret Streeter

Stradbroke Cinema On Thursday, 4th. February we are showing “Everest” (12A) at 7.00 for 7.30 pm. The Bar will be open and ice cream in the interval. Entrance £5.50. On the morning of May10, 1996, climbers (Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin) from two expeditions start their final ascent toward the summit of Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth. With little warning, a violent storm strikes the mountain, engulfing the adventurers in one of the fiercest blizzards ever met with by man. Challenged by the harshest conditions imaginable, the teams must endure blistering winds and freezing temperatures in an epic battle to survive against nearly impossible odds. An emotional rendering of a true story. On Thursday, 18th. February “Suffragette” (12A) It is the first film in history to be shot in the houses of parliament, done with the permission of MPs. Includes the events known by anyone familiar with the history: hunger strikes, bombs dropped into mailboxes, the blowing up of Lloyd George's summer home. A turning point was in 1913, when Emily Wilding Davison (played in the film by Natalie Press) stepped out in front of King George's galloping horse on Derby Day, a "Votes for Women" banner in her hand, and was trampled to death. A martyr. Thousands of people lined the streets to watch the funeral procession. It is a gripping story of the suffragette movement in England, with brilliant performances by Kerry Mulligan and Helena Bonham-Carter. It portrays in stunning reality how vastly different women were treated a mere 100 years ago; it is astonishing that women had no rights whatsoever back then. Thursday, 3rd. Join the Big Hospice Sewing Bee St Elizabeth Hospice is looking for local crafters to join the Big Hospice Sewing Bee and compete to turn a used item of clothing into a cutting edge masterpiece. The competition will run from Friday 12 February to Monday 14 March, giving you just over a month to perfect your upcycled garment. You can change the item into a completely different garment, or upcycle it, transforming it with embellishments, or adding/taking away pieces of material and haberdashery accessories. The finalists will be chosen by a panel of experts at an awards event and those with the best designs will then compete live on Saturday 19 March to win the overall title of the Big Hospice Sewing Bee Champion – and a fantastic prize! Fiona Ginn, St Elizabeth Hospice’s partnerships fundraiser, said: “The Big Hospice Sewing Bee is a fantastic opportunity for you to use your creative, sewing and haberdashery skills in this exciting new event, whilst supporting your local hospice. “All the money raised from the Sewing Bee will help go towards improving life for local people living with a progressive illness such as cancer, motor neurone disease or heart failure in East Suffolk.” Entry is £10, with £5 of that given back to you in voucher form to spend at one of St Elizabeth Hospice’s 26 shops to buy the material to upcycle. Sign up for the Big Hospice Sewing Bee online now at www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/sewingbee or to request a paper form, please call 01473 723600 or email fundraising@stelizabethhospice.org.uk Many Thanks, Sophie Johnson, Marketing Assistant

Suffolk Cancer Research Suffolk Cancer Research are holding a Relay for Life. This year the event will take place at Ickworth House on 17/18th September 2016. We are looking for more teams to take part in the relay, this is a fantastic opportunity and the relay is very unique and requires camping overnight in the grounds of Ickworth House. One member of your team has to be walking for the duration of the 24hrs. It's fun, it's emotional, lots of laughter and tears and a big sense of achievement. Please would you email letting me know if your school will take part in the Purple Day. Also any information you would like on getting a team together. Or maybe you know a survivor of cancer who would be able to attend the opening ceremony of the Relay. We would like to raise as much as we can and are asking schools in Suffolk for their help with this by having a Purple Day, this being the colour for cancer research. The date we have in mind is Friday 22nd April 2016. If all the schools could help us with this it would be fantastic. Any child participating would contribute £1 for the wearing of purple. Yours faithfully, Pamela Darkins Secretary of the Suffolk Cancer Research 24hr Relay

Wonderful Winter Woodland Walks in the Heart of Suffolk Two of the best things about Suffolk, for both local people and visitors, are the peace and quiet, and the countryside. We have put together a selection of ideas for Woodland Walks in the area, which can be explored in the Winter. Some are privately owned; Vicarage Plantation at Mendlesham and Rookyard Farm, Old Newton. Others are managed by the Woodland Trust; Hoggs Kiss Wood, Debenham and Northfield Wood, Onehouse. Still more are looked after by the Suffolk Wildlife Trust; Combs Wood, Stowmarket and Coopers Copse at Elmswell. Those that are easily accessible include Thornham Walks and Needham Lake. Winter is a great time to explore both old and new woodland. From Hoxne to Pakenham, and Tostock to Henley, you can find ancient trees, nuts and berries, animal tracks and signs any many different birds. Pop in to the Tourist Information Centre for more information or inspiration. We have a range of maps and books for walking in the area. Sue Green

Court House - Week night Coffee Bar? Free drink offer! The Court House, through its coffee mornings and community meals, has become a real success and asset to the social life of the village. In 2016 we would like to widen its user base and provide facilities and activities which appeal, and are accessible, to even more members of the community particularly those who work, or go to school or college. For that reason we are considering opening some evenings each month as a coffee bar, ESPECIALLY for those who cannot come during the day, so they might meet friends over coffee or other non-alcoholic drinks, play computer or board games together, use the Wifi etc. We want community members themselves to develop what they want in a great social meeting place, which serves the very best coffees (including lattes and cappuccinos) as well as hot chocolate. If you have ideas, or would like to be involved in developing or supporting such evenings, or just would like a free hot or soft drink in the Court House, particularly if you have not visited before, then please come along anytime between 7pm and 9pm on Monday14th March. On that evening we will have some board games to play or you might want to bring your own, but we just want you to come along and enjoy yourself in a very relaxed atmosphere. If you cannot come that night but interested in the idea, or have others, please tell Maureen in the library or contact one of us. Stradbroke Cricket Club The League of Apathy, aka Stradbroke Cricket Club, held their AGM at sponsors, The Ivy House. Because of the poor attendance it was nepotism all the way, with unopposed re-elections for: Michael Hugman (Chairman & Groundsman), Richard Pierce-Saunderson (Secretary & Welfare Officer), Caroline Johnson (Treasurer), James Gilbee (Minutes Secretary), Ben Flatt (Vikings Captain), Don Lummis (President), & Malcolm Tenneson (Junior Coordinator). Alan Munday & James Webster were also re-elected, the latter as new Membership Secretary & Website Manager. The positive aspects of the Chairman’s Report, outlined the focus on stabilising the Saturday side (Vikings) in the Two Counties League, while Sundays will see participation in a 20/20 competition alongside more Academy friendlies, both with an emphasis on promoting younger cricketers. The current Under 15 & Under 13 teams have entered the Suffolk Youth League, and dependent upon funding & manpower, the next generation of cricketers will receive coaching in local Primary Schools. Stradbroke Badminton Club Club nights continue to be well attended and it's great to see some new faces too. The men's team have played 2 more games in the Ipswich League and the new year has also seen the start of the Aldeburgh League. Results: Ipswich and District Badminton League Stradbroke 8.5 - 0.5 Framlingham Stradbroke 7.5 - 1.5 Meridians C The first game of the new year was a visit from local rivals Framlingham. After beating them home and away last year we were looking forward to this game. It didn't disappoint, everyone played well after the Christmas break and we got another win. The next game was against newly promoted Meridians C. We didn't know what to expect from them as we hadn't played them before, so was pleased with the result, extending our 100% record this season. Aldeburgh League: Stradbroke 4 - 2 Thorpeness Our campaign in the Aldeburgh League this season got of to a great start with a win over Thorpeness, who are always strong favourites for the league title, so a great result. Stradbroke Neighbourhood Plan Up-date We are approaching the time when we will be handing over the next stage of this to the village in that the questionnaire will be issued to every resident in order that every person can have their say and voice their opinion. At the time of this going to publication, we are unable to give you a precise date of when we will be delivering these so we will be putting a short but informative leaflet through every door giving a clear explanation of what the Neighbourhood Plan is, why it is important for Stradbroke and the process for completion of the questionnaire. This will be happening in the next few weeks accompanied by a major launch of this crucial part of the Plan … Have your say! If you have any queries in the meantime please do not hesitate to contact me at gillianrenniedunkerley@hotmail.com or 01379 384248. SPEAK OUT FOR STRADBROKE! Gillian Rennie Dunkerley

My Care At Home February is National Heart Month here are a few tips from the British Heart Foundation for keeping a healthy heart. 1. Cut down on your salt intake! Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Avoid foods like crisps, salted nuts, canned and packet soups and sauces, baked beans, and ready meals. 2. Watch your diet. A healthy diet can help to reduce the risk of developing heart disease and can also help increase the chances of survival after a heart attack. 3. Get Active! The heart is a muscle and it needs exercise to keep fit so that it can pump blood efficiently around your body with each heartbeat. 4. Manage your weight. The number of people who are overweight in Britain is rising fast. Carrying a lot of extra weight as fat can greatly affect your health and increases the risk of life-threatening conditions such as coronary heart disease and diabetes. If you are overweight or obese start by making small, but healthy changes to what you eat and try to become more active. 5. Get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked by your GP. People with high blood pressure run a higher risk of having a stroke or a heart attack. High levels of cholesterol in the blood - produced by the liver from saturated fats - can lead to fatty deposits in your coronary arteries that increase your risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and diseases that affect the circulation. You can help lower your cholesterol level by exercising and eating high-fibre foods such as porridge, beans, pulses, lentils, nuts, fruits and vegetables. 6. Check your family history. If a close relative is at risk of developing coronary heart disease from smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lack of physical activity, obesity and diabetes, then you could be at risk too. 7. Make sure you can recognise the early signs of coronary heart disease. Tightness or discomfort in the chest, neck, arm or stomach which comes on when you exert yourself but goes away with rest may be the first sign of angina, which can lead to a heart attack if left untreated. Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund News A generous hairdresser has given a £1,030 boost to a charity campaign after celebrating her 21st birthday with a 1950s rock ‘n’ roll themed fundraiser. Lauren Friend held the party for her landmark birthday to raise money for Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund (HCNCF), after her mum Karen received treatment for breast cancer four years ago. The money raised from the evening, which took place at the Triple Plea Inn in Halesworth on 19 December, will go towards HCNCF’s information and support centre (ISC) appeal, taking the current total to just over £552,000 of the £714,000 target. Lauren, who lives and works in Halesworth, said: “My mum and dad asked if I’d like a party for my birthday, and I decided to do it for charity as it’s so important to me to get the information and support centre up and running. The ISC aims to bring a full range of holistic services closer to home for patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers. This includes benefits advice, wig-fitting, lymphoedema services, children and family support, complementary therapies, help understanding a diagnosis, counselling and bereavement support. “We have been really lucky to have received such great support from our local community throughout the project, with everyone pulling together to raise the money we need to start work on this important facility. www.halesworthhealth.org/information-and-support-centre Liz Hearnshaw at Zenith Public Relations on 01359 242581 or 07501 490308.

Gosh, what a mild winter we have had. Although as someone who has to drive a distance to get to work, I am grateful for a lack of icy roads, I also know as a gardener that the icy winter has its part to play in natures cycle, killing off many garden pests etc. We will probably have a higher number of unwanted bugs to deal with if the warm weather persists. Nature seems quite confused and many plants are flowering out of season. This can be a problem if our fruit trees start to develop swollen buds and burst into flower too early. We still have lots of chances of hard spring frosts, so early flowers are unlikely to yield a good crop later. For all the allotmenteers itching to get planting, there is now the opportunity to reserve a space in the polytunnel so you can get a head start with your crops. We hope to have it completed before Easter. For those who prefer to be indoors in cold weather, come and join us for our allotment Quiz night on 6th February at 7.30. A Ploughmans supper will be provided, and a fun night out for only £6 per head. Hope to see you there! Gill Palmer – chair We have now only one half plot left on the site. I predict that by Easter there will be a waiting list, so if you are considering it, if you leave it too long, you may have to wait a year or two! We look forward to seeing new members. As I pulled up a gentleman came out of the Black Barns footpath and turned right into the Valley Farm one. He proceeded to whistle, I thought it strange as could see no dog. Then from almost as far back as the farmhouse, came a young yellow Labrador running over the crops towards him. I shouted to him and asked him if he could put his dog on a lead as I stood there with my dog in my arms, he then asked me to repeat it so I then said that his dog should be on a lead and not running over the crops. He then walked up to me and stood in front of me and asked in an arrogant manner if he 'could help me' I repeated that I wanted to walk my dog and his should be on a lead. I was told that it was a footpath and to 'go on then' still standing in front of me, he then asked who did I think I was 'the crop police?' I explained again that I wanted to walk my dog and was told again, well this is the footpath 'go on then' still standing in front of me. He clearly did not like being pulled up. I proceeded to explain I wanted to walk my dog and would not put her down as he clearly did not have control over his and did not put it on a lead. He stated that he did have control and I argued the point and said clearly not, as he had come out of one footpath and entered another to find his dog. I was then asked again ' was I the crop police'. I at this point asked if he could move on so I could walk my dog as he was making me start to feel a little nervous and as if I was caught up in a stand off?? Finally at this point he moved away and shouted 'Happy New Year' sarcastically to me as he then walked again down the Black Barns. He was extremely rude and intimidating and feel perhaps unaware that dogs should not be allowed to run wild over farmers land. He clearly did not have control, nor able to clear up any dog mess as the dog was not in sight, also had there been any chickens or small livestock at Valley Farm this dog could have done harm. I have not named this man, but know who he is and believe known for not having manners whilst walking and not putting his dog on a lead whilst approaching others, and when asked to as in my case acts defensibly and threatening and refused. I should like to wish you a happy New Year and a peaceful and healthy 2016. The start of a new year is always helpful to reflect on priorities for the year ahead and I should like to tell you some of mine. In Parliament I am looking forward to continuing in my role as a member of the Energy and Climate Change Committee and playing my part in achieving a balanced energy policy and innovative future energy system for our country. I shall also vigorously support the Government’s long-term approach to climate targets and to promote renewable and clean energy. I was delighted to be elected recently as co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health and shall be contributing my experience as an NHS doctor to help to build on the achievements of this influential group in working to improve healthcare for the benefit of patients both in the UK and elsewhere. One of my main priorities this year is to highlight the need for better mental health provision and a fairer deal for mental health funding to support the dedicated NHS staff that care for mental health patients. Another of my priorities is to do my best to promote employment particularly for young people. We have come a long way in creating employment for young people in Suffolk - there were only 90 claimants aged 18-24 in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich in November 2015 which was 65 people lower than the previous year. But there is still more to do and I should like to see more young people doing vocational courses and apprenticeships. As co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Carers I am determined to do all I can to support carers not only in Suffolk but also across the country. There are over 7 million unpaid carers in the UK and this will increase enormously during the next decade when the people needing care are expected to increase by 50%. Carers play an enormously important role in many peoples’ lives and are often the unsung heroes of our community. This year I should like to highlight the role of young carers and how important it is to help to identify them and give them the practical and emotional support that they need to ensure that they enjoy their lives and achieve just like their peers. I am looking forward to meeting the challenges of the year ahead and shall be reporting back regularly in this column. For more information please visit my website www.drdanielpoulter.com.
