Lift off for local talent! STRADISPHERE 2017
No.434
Stradisphere Music Festival returns to Stradbroke for its fourth successful year. The countdown is on to Suffolk’s premium open air music festival. With just a few days until lift-off, Stradisphere mission control is aiming for the stars with a stellar line-up for the annual event, now in its 4th year of supporting local musical talent. Set over Friday 7th and Saturday 8th July at Stradbroke Community Sports Field, festival goers can expect the best music Suffolk has to offer, alongside great food, and local stall holders. Sticking to previous years, top tribute acts form a large part of the show. Guns or Roses headline Friday evening. The Marley Experience will be bringing the Jamaican sunshine to Saturday afternoon, no matter the weather. The event draws to a close on Saturday evening with Tess & Sink the Beat, taking the crowd on a historical tour of talent with music through the decades. Leading lady Tess Bockhart, is a former X factor contestant and star in her own right, but has recently toured with Billy Ocean, Pink Floyd Show UK, and has teamed with Radio DJ Chris Moyles on numerous parody covers. Dead Famous! Every act, playing across all three stages, has been asked to take part in this year’s Dead Famous theme. Whether they are rocking the main stage, chilling on the acoustic stage or bringing warm vibes to the Island stage, every performance will feature a cover song of a famous artist that is gone but not forgotten. New to this year’s offering is a dedicated kid zone, giving parents the chance to enjoy the music safe in the knowledge their children are in a securely fenced and staffed area, enjoying all the fun it has to offer. Alongside bouncy castles, kids will be able to take part in games and sporting activities, or nurture their artistic side with a craft and create space. Every child will be invited to make their mark on the Stradisphere rocket, this year’s festival mascot, as well as making mini rockets to take home. Looking to encourage future generations of local music talent, all school aged children will be encouraged to take part in a Saturday afternoon music workshop run by Saturday night’s headline act Tess Bockhart. Having learnt the lyrics and dance moves they’ll be in with the chance to take to the stage later in the day to show off their talents. Tickets are still available online for a limited time or can be purchased at the gate. Jo Baber

After twenty years our friend Jackie Hughes has left the village, moving to be nearer her family in Sussex. We wish her well and we will miss her, for Jackie has played an active part in the Baptist Church in a number of different roles, including secretary and musician. We now have a new Church secretary, and are looking for a volunteer instrumentalist to lead our worship occasionally. Can you help? We sing a variety of traditional and newer songs and would welcome the input of anyone who wishes to enhance our Sunday worship. Looking forward - Tour of Britain Cycle race - Stradbroke The bunting will be up and the crowds out on 8th September as the cyclists pass through the village on the sixth leg of the tour from Newmarket and finishing at Aldeburgh. As the route passes the Baptist Church we intend to open our building for the benefit of spectators, our toilets will be open and refreshments will be available. Anyone is welcome to use the Church’s facilities. A Gardening Friend Even after some of the hottest weather the gardens still look in good condition. Flowers of all shapes and sizes are producing a wonderful array of scent and colour whilst the vegetables are promising a good harvest. Some of the most interesting and innovative things I have done in the garden have been as a result of advice from a good friend who has rather more knowledge and training than myself. It is good to have friends who can offer gardening, financial or medical advice. The hymn writer Joseph Scriven reminds us that the best possible friend is Jesus Himself; What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear – all because we do not carry everything to God in Prayer. The best friend and the best advice is always from Jesus. And Finally 200 hundred years This year marks two hundred years since the formation of Stradbroke Baptist Church. It is quite a story but through the perseverance of a number of people the building as seen today came into existence. To mark this special occasion we plan to hold a special service and tea on Sat. 18th September. This is open for anyone and if you have any memories or photos relating to our history and are willing to share these please contact Eric Havers 01379 388173 or email erichavers@btinternet.com. All Saints - From the Rectory
Dear Friends and Neighbours, As I write this my thoughts are with local families who have lost a loved one. Death is always painful for those left behind and when the person who died was young it seems all the more tragic. Most of us are affected by the death of someone we knew and loved, some of us are experiencing pain for other reasons such as broken relationships, falling out with family or friends, loneliness depression or sickness, for others it is the financial situation they find themselves in or other painful circumstances. As I was contemplating some of these thoughts an old hymn came to mind, the chorus is: We have an anchor that keeps the soul, steadfast and sure while the billows roll, fastened to the Rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the Saviour’s love. And I felt so grateful that my faith is not in anything I have or am, not in anything I can do, but in a God who holds the universe in his hands and yet still reaches down to me with his love. I know that when troubles come or even if I walk in the valley of death, I will not fear because God can reach into the darkest and driest of places to give us hope for the future - even heaven. What is your anchor? If your anchor isn’t holding you firm, why not try reaching out to Jesus who waits for us to turn to him and then walks beside us every step of our way. God bless, Susan

June meeting of the Stradbroke WI
This was an open meeting and so we whipped through the usual offices , thanks to the hostesses for the beautiful flowers and presentation of birthday posies and then we sat back for an evening of song and laughter. Picture the scene the room was full of members and visitors plus two brave chaps who had been persuaded to join the fun and in floats this lovely vision in a beautiful scarlet dress and a wide smile welcoming us to an evening of song poetry and chat, well we were all set for a magical evening. Rachel Duffield introduced herself and explained her interest as an historian, in the life and times of Marie Lloyd and songs of the past. The first half of the evening was to be songs of the seven ages of woman with songs that matched the different ages starting with a glorious rendition of somewhere over the rainbow and as we were duly invited to do so we joined in shyly at first but with gusto by the end. Rachel talked about music in childhood and took us all back to the days of junior school when we were obliged to do music and movement to the radio in the assembly hall . This was supported by an hilarious performance of a song written by Victoria Wood about a little boy who plainly did not enjoy soppy stuff like this and great gusts of laughter echoed around as we watched Rachel become this reluctant small boy, marvellous .Next we heard from the musical ‘Witches’ which involved a schoolgirl giving advice on how to be Popular, the title of the song, then moved directly to an older girl singing I just can’t say no from Oaklahoma , um every mothers nightmare. A poem about how we view our bodies and the changes or differences that just have to be accepted by all of us had us listening and nodding in agreement , relevant to us all at some point. Joyce Grenfell represented our older years and a wonderfully funny performance of an older lady who is singing in church and suddenly realises that she can’t remember if she has turned the gas off under a saucepan and mixes her anxieties of the consequences with the hymn ,a rapid amen and a dash for home , we loved it. Refreshments were served at the tables and then we settled in for the second half. Rachel returned in costume as Marie Lloyd and gave us a brief history of the times and fashions of the era and of how a young Marie used to stand on the tables at various pubs and sing for pennies to help support her large family. We heard about the difference between draws and bloomers and the type of female who would wear the bloomers with the gap or the draws with the draw string and no gap, who knew? Marie gave her first music hall appearance in the Eagle at the age of 15 and was rocketed to fame from there. The song The boy I love is up in the gallery , was performed with plenty of audience participation and the chap a waving of his handkerchief was roundly applauded for his efforts. During another song the other gentleman was subject to a little flirting which brought a huge smile to his face and laughter to the audience ,all good fun. We were taken through the life of Marie which was never dull but sometimes difficult as she in turn shocked and thrilled her audience with her songs and behaviour , nothing new there. The evening moved on with traditional music hall songs and recitations all beautifully performed by Rachel and thoroughly enjoyed by us all and the story of Marie Lloyd concluded as we heard about her comeback performance to aid recruiting for the war in 1914 when she collapsed and died on stage at the age of 50, she died as she lived so much in the public eye. Dorothy gave a heartfelt vote of thanks to Rachel for such an excellent evenings’ entertainment roundly supported by us all, it was so much fun. Our next meeting will be on July 12th when Denise Billinghurst will give a talk called Walking with Lions, do come and join us you will be most welcome. Prue Rush

Stradbroke Primary News
This month we have had some exciting events at Stradbroke Primary. Last Monday Norwich Puppet Theatre came to perform “The Pied Piper” for our children. Stradbroke Primary is a Gold Artsmark school and there are always lots of events connected to the Arts going on in school. This Thursday Year 2 and 3 from Stradbroke Primary and Year 3 and 4 from Laxfield Primary will be visiting Norwich Theatre Royal to watch a production of “Fantastic Mr Fox”. The children really enjoy joint visits with our partner school and they enable us to reduce the cost to parents by sharing the cost of the visit, especially transport costs. We were really pleased the four of our teachers this week had interviews to be accredited as Specialist Support Teachers. This is a nationally recognised accreditation through NCTL. Our Executive Headteacher is a National Leader of Education and our Chair of Governors a National Leader of Governance. This is an incredible skill set for one small school! The village should be very proud that our local school is recognised so highly at a National level! At the end of this term we are rounding up our exciting overarching Curriculum topic for this year on “Legends and Legacies”. We are taking the children on a visit to Banham Zoo to learn more about conservation. Each class is going to have a special talk from staff at the zoo to find out more about the important work relating to conservation that the organisation does. We are incredibly proud of the achievements of our children this year and want to praise all the Year groups recently undertaking national assessments. Our children make fantastic progress during their time at the school and we are inclusive taking children at the start of their school career from all different starting points. What really pleases us is the individual progress each child makes- the school was recently praised for being in the top 3% of all Primary Schools nationally for progress and this is thanks to the hard work and dedication of our staff and our fabulous pupils. Next week pupils are going to be performing in our end of year production “The Adventures of Super Stan”! We are very much looking forward to this and have lots of events lined up for our Year 6 pupils before they transfer to High School including a residential visit with other local schools to the Peak District. May we wish all the readers a happy Summer- we will be back in the new academic year with more news from Stradbroke Primary. Melanie Barrow, Executive Headteacher

Lance Corporal WALTER BURRIDGE. On 16th June 1917 Lance Corporal Walter Burridge was killed in action at Arras in the north of France. He is remembered with honour on the Stradbroke War Memorial but SARA is finding it difficult to find out more about Walter as to who he was as the boy and young man before he enlisted into the Suffolk Regiment. We have searched the census returns and registration records and although there are three young men with the same name in Eye we have not found a reference in Stradbroke. We have looked through the military records that still exist and can only find the following information about his final day: Firstly that Saturday 16th of June 1917 was a very hot day in Arras. The war diary of 2nd battalion of The Suffolks records that shelling of Hook trench began five minutes after midnight and increased in violence until 1:45am. At 2:15am an SOS is sent up, Hook trench being heavily barraged. By 3:30am the enemy is seen in large numbers on the right and left of the Bois du Vert - rapid fire opened and the advance stopped about 300yards from Long and Hook trenches. At 4:00 am the enemy withdrew. By 5:30am everything again was quiet. During the afternoon of the 16th there was desultory shelling of Hook and Tool trenches which increased towards the evening. From 10pm onwards Hook and Tool trenches were heavily shelled all night. All the trenches were badly damaged. The diary records that 6 officers were killed, 3 officers were wounded, 52 other ranks killed, 152 other ranks wounded and 8 other ranks missing. The final paragraph lists lessons to be learned of which the diary notes there were five. The final one states that the use of pigeons proved invaluable and were on one occasion, as quick as a runner. News from Stradbroke High School
The school governors formally voted to make an application to join Sapientia Education Trust at a meeting of the Full Governing Body in June. There will now be a period of legal processes, which may take some time, but it is our intention to join the Trust on 1st September 2017. The benefits to our student and staff are overwhelmingly positive, and being a part of the Multi-Academy Trust will sustain and enhance our school into the future. We would like to thank all who have contributed to this process, and for their support in making our school the success that it is. We will keep all our stakeholders updated as the process continues. Congratulations to all students who were nominated to become our new Head Boy and Head Girl. Ten students were nominated by their peers and by the staff. Each was invited to apply by submitting a manifesto, and was then interviewed. We are incredibly proud of each nominee and after a rigorous selection process the following students were confirmed in their new roles: · Head Girl – Jayjay Fenwick · Deputy Head Girl – Eve Barnett · Head Boy – James Hayball · Deputy Head Boy – Thomas Grayston. We look forward to their leadership of the student body. As the school year comes to a close, we are working on two important events for the diary: The CARnival, our annual classic car show along with live music, craft stalls, funfair activities and lots more for a good family day out, organised by our very active Friends of Stradbroke High School (FOSH) which takes place at the school before the new term starts, on Sunday September 3rd. We are also eagerly anticipating welcoming visitors to our annual Open Evening on September 20th. Zak Hills-Brown in Year 7 has qualified for the World Tae Kwon Do championships in Florida in September after winning the silver medal in individual ‘Kata’ at a qualifying event at UEA recently. Zak, who trains nearly every night of the week, has been practising Tae Kwon Do since he was three years old. He trains with the Blackbelt Academy at Harleston, Weybread, Diss and Norwich and now specialises as part of the Kata squad for the Blackbelt Academy. Kata is a Japanese word that means detailed choreographed patterns of movements practiced either solo or in pairs. Zak is really pleased as three other competitors who have also qualified have been training with Zak since he was three. Zak’s mum and dad and sister are also very pleased because they get to go to Florida with Zak and are having an extended holiday just before the competition. We wish Zak well and will report on how he gets on. Good Luck Zak! Businesses working with Stradbroke High School We are very fortunate to benefit from the support of the business community through the Business Association with Stradbroke High School (BASH). Over the past two years, through a series of breakfast meetings, we have been working with our business colleagues to bring examples of life after school to our students Mock Interviews for Year 10 students; workshops and assemblies for students of all ages; workplace visits; work experience and more recently with Young Enterprise. We are pleased to receive sponsorship from BQP (British Quality Pigs) in Stradbroke. Demonstrating its commitment to supporting young people, through work experience, industrial placement, graduate and apprenticeship programs, BQP and the school work with the students to support learning and careers activities. Lee Phillips, Managing Director of Roger Skinner Ltd. one of Stradbroke’s most well-known companies and a supporter of Stradbroke High School is passionate about educating young people that in every organisation there are a range of roles available – and therefore that there is so much more to Skinners than pet food. In summarising the three most important characteristics Skinners look for in their team members they explain why the company has grown from strength to strength: To be able to: think on their feet – not wait to be told; work in a team and finally to recognise that the customer comes first! All valuable messages for today’s young people as they go through their journey in education. Known by many local people as their school bus provider, Galloway has been operating out of Mendlesham for the past fifty years. Galloway has been educating students that the operation relies on its people as well as technology to ensure every day is a success. As Stradbroke High School’s students consider their future careers Galloway have been supporting the school in showing students how to prepare for apprenticeships and other careers through the company’s commitment to training and developing young people. All our BASH companies, including Lane Farm, Brundish; Grasshopper Lawncare; BT; St Peters Brewery, Castle Clothing and About People (UK) Ltd will be being represented throughout the year at employability events comprising Mock Interviews for Year 10 students, assemblies and careers workshops and we are very grateful to benefit from their support and all the support we receive from our excellent business partners. If anyone with a business interest would like to join BASH in supporting the school through their time and expertise, contact Mrs Clarke in the first instance by calling 01379 384 387. The next BASH breakfast is on Wednesday September 27th at 7.30am. Our next film will be shown on Thursday 20th July 7 for 7.30pm. The bar will be open and ice creams will be on sale in the interval. Entrance is £5.50. ‘Lion’ is an astonishing true story of a small boy lost in Calcutta but who, after many shocking attempts to live on the streets, is adopted by an Australian couple and begins a very different life. 25 years later, he seeks out his real family in India. The film is inescapably moving but not over-sentimental and you cannot help but be drawn into the highs and lows of his search. Nicole Kidman gives a performance of a lifetime as his Australian mother. Why the title ‘Lion’? Wait for the tear-jerking crescendo of the last scenes. This is our last film for the summer season and at the time of writing we are not able to advise on the forthcoming autumn season starting in September. "Like a grower of quality blooms, whose whole year is tailored towards the Chelsea Flower Show, Radio Stradbroke build towards the Stradisphere Music Festival. July is the month when the prize bull is let out into the field. The aperatif comes in the shape of DJ Huggy presenting the pre-Stradisphere 'Round Table', playing & casting a critical ear over the acts appearing this year. When the lights go off, the entire operation moves to the festival site, where in addition to warm up shows, the entire festival, Friday 7th July (6pm to 11pm), & Saturday 8th July (11:30am to 11pm) is recorded & broadcast, as it happens. This years Joker is a third stage to put in the can to broadcast later.Thrilled as we are to bring 'Guns or Roses' & 'The Marley Experience' to radioland, out biggest thrill is introducing local talent to the ether, whether it be established acts like 'Hemingway' & 'Little Red Kings', on the Friday Night, or undiscovered new acts through 'Stradbrokes Got Talent' on Saturday afternoon, which is in its third year with no sign of running dry. So when you read this & say 'Why Stradisphere?' or 'Why Radio Stradbroke?' it is for exactly that reason. Any local musician knows there is a platform for them to perform, & take a step along the road to their dream. Normal service will resume in mid July, after a stiff drink, rehab, & a rub down with the Melody Maker! Keep it Radio Stradbroke (& Stradisphere) . Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Neighbourhood Plan
We would like to invite everyone to an important Open Event at the CARnival on Sunday, September 3rd 10.00 4.00pm and repeated on Thursday, September 7th in the Community Centre 6.00 - 9.00pm. At this Open Event there will be a full display of the 13 sites now submitted to the Neighbourhood Plan and the results of the professional assessments undertaken on them. There will also be a clear map of ‘Green Spaces’ identified and the suggested policy leading out from that. This will be an opportunity for you all to comment further on those potential development sites and the green spaces beyond what you have already stated in the survey. Your responses are very important to us as they feed into the Neighbourhood Plan that is now near completion in terms of a draft that all residents will be able to access. Firstly, it needs to be reviewed and amended by Mid Suffolk District Council and the Parish Council but we shall be displaying our early drafts of policies that have emerged from the survey and the impartial summaries produced by external agencies. All our current work is available on the village website stradbrokeonline.org. uk and it is regularly up-dated as we proceed. We look forward to seeing you in September. The Museum of East Anglian Life – celebrating 50 years
Based in 75 acres in the heart of Suffolk, the Museum of East Anglian Life is an award winning open air museum and a great day out. The Museum celebrates its 50th Birthday this July with a party for everyone to enjoy. We'll have fancy dress competitions, a bake us a birthday cake bake-off and behind-the-scenes tours of the museum. Whilst you are here you can spend time in our walled Victorian garden – and take away some plants, visit a range of historic buildings from a medieval barn to a wind pump, walk along our river trail and see our animals. Bring a picnic, or visit our cafe, and discover something new about your region. During your visit you can also find out more about our plans to create a new heritage Farm at the heart of our site to be a centre for conservation and education about our rural heritage, our food, and where it comes from. In 1967, the museum founders had a vision to save the farming heritage of East Anglia. We already look after rare breeds and want to do more conservation work with local animals and plants, including the Suffolk Punch horse and Red Poll cow, both native to East Anglia and on the at risk Watchlist. This will be a farm with heavy horses, rare breeds, arable strips and a free-range poultry orchard. Using Suffolk Punch horses and a working collection of historical farm machinery we will demonstrate 19th and 20th-century techniques and provide hands-on experiences for visitors. We will promote and protect the heritage of traditional farming skills by employing and training a heavy horseman/woman. This is necessary as the skills around caring for heavy horses are also at risk. The Heritage Farm will showcase the Suffolk Trinity and other rare breeds from the region including Large Black pigs, Norfolk Horn sheep, Appleyard ducks and Ixworth chickens. Some of these breeds are classified as critical (less than 300 remaining) and we will work with others to promote awareness of this whilst playing a part in conserving them, and maintaining the skills necessary to work with them. We are looking for local people to get involved with this project and in April 2017 we launched a campaign to raise funds to introduce rare breeds to the farm. You can find out more about the campaign and what’s on at the museum on our website www.eastanglianlife.org.uk Kate Axon

Photography competition to capture the sounds of Suffolk
Take a moment to imagine if you couldn’t hear the birds singing, your friends talking in the pub, or your favourite song playing on the radio. This is reality for many people who experience hearing loss and a major new photographic competition is being launched by one of Suffolk’s best-known businesses to raise awareness about the importance of hearing. Titled ‘Sounds of Suffolk’ the competition is being launched as part of Deaf Awareness Week, a national initiative also aimed at highlighting hearing impairment. Award-winning hearing care specialist, The Hearing Care Centre, based locally at Eye Health Centre, is inviting amateur and professional photographers alike from across the county to enter the competition with pictures which demonstrate the incredible sounds that can be found in and around our beautiful county and may not otherwise be heard by those with hearing loss. “It could be the sea crashing against the shore at Southwold, birds singing at Minsmere, the bells chiming at Bury St Edmunds Cathedral or screaming thrill seekers on a ride at Pleasurewood Hills” says Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre. “In fact any picture which depicts the sounds of the county in a powerful way,” she says. The Hearing Care Centre, which has 24 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk, is putting up a top prize of £250 for the best picture, followed by £100 for second place and an annual subscription to Suffolk Magazine for third place. The closing date for the competition is Sunday 30th July 2017. For full information about the competition and the entry details, visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/soundsofsuffolk

Sports Roundup
Stradbroke Cricket Club
"The old adage that however bad things are, there is always someone worse off, have come sharply into focus this Summer. Old issues of player availability still remain, but the Club carries on. Not so five of our opponents, who have conceded matches to Stradbroke already, citing lack of players. A win, is a win, is a win, but having committed to play, there is nothing more annoying than having the rug pulled at short notice, not to mention pitch or tea preparation, all for nought. In an attempt to keep our heads above water, the Cricket Club took part in 'Stradbroke Sports Open Day'. There was hardly a queue of prospective new players, but what did come out of the day was an acknowledgement that there is a Cricket Club in the Village, one of many Sports Clubs. Another observation was that we do not advertise our home matches so that villagers can come & give us a look on a sunny afternoon. These are our next home matches: Saturday 15/7 v Yoxford, 5/8 v Felixstowe, & 19/8 v DBSL (all 1pm start). Sunday 23/7 v Saxmundham/Rumburgh (1pm start). Look in on us. If the cricket is no good, the scenery is lovely. Finally, for the 7th & possibly last year, the Club took on the Headmasters XI, & with great timing, won the game making the series 4 - 3. Thanks & 'Happy Retirement' to Andrew Bloom who professionally as Headmaster, & a cricket nut on the side, re-opened links between High School & Cricket Club, & leaves them even stronger. An eventful month indeed! Apparently there was also an election. Keep supporting your local Cricket Club." Michael Hugman

Matches are underway in both the South Norfolk and Lowestoft Leagues. Their has been mixed success so far but with home matches coming up with Beccles and Diss Heywood we hope to consolidate our position in the first division of both leagues. At the recent Sports Open Day we offered drop in taster sessions for all ages and ability. A number of people took part and made enquiries with regards to membership, coaching and general court hire which was very encouraging and hopefully more people will use the courts which are an excellent facility for the village to have and are currently under used. With Wimbledon underway and the School holidays coming up there is not a better time to come and play. Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre
The village of Stradbroke came alive with Triathletes from all over the country competing in the Stradbroke Super Sprint Triathlon on May 20th & 21st. Run by Norfolk based Active Outdoor Sport, this award winning triathlon now in its 3rd year took place at Everyone Actives Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre. The event (160m swim, 17k cycle, 3k run) has grown each year due to the great community involvement in Stradbroke. This year a Saturday evening race was added to give entrants an extra challenge of competing 2 triathlons in a weekend! Also in its second year our increasingly popular Junior Aquathlon (8-15yrs) event took place on the Sunday after the adult triathlon had concluded. The event involved different set swim and run distances depending on the child’s age. 100 Adults took part in Saturday evenings race, 160 on Sunday & 80 juniors in Sunday afternoons Aquathlon (swim & run). Lots of families saw this weekend as an opportunity to get fit & active together with parents entering the triathlon & encouraging their children to enter the Aquathlon! Saturday evening’s winners: Male: Mark Thompson Female: Andrea Eugster Sunday morning winners: Male: Craig Smith (Stradbroke resident) Female: Anna Firth Thanks must go to Stradbroke Spar,Tesco & Morrisons in Diss & Lucozade for providing refreshments & sponsorship, to all the volunteer Marshals & all the Stradbroke residents who helped and gave us a huge amount of support during this event! For results www.chiptiming.co.uk. On a more personal note we would like to send our condolences to the families of Rachel Edwards and Hayley Adams both of whom worked at the site and who sadly recently passed away. Rachel worked at Stradbroke Pool a long while ago as a Lifeguard before moving onto pastures new, she came back to the Centre sporadically as a customer but was still seen as part of the Stradbroke Pool family. Hayley was also a treasured member of the Stradbroke Pool Family who was much loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing her, her enthusiasm and smile whenever she was at work made her a firm favourite with all our colleagues & members, she will be sorely missed by all. We have a collection box situated in our main reception area which is helping to raise money for The Aplastic Anaemia Trust, this is the only charity in the UK that researches this disease. To honour Hayley’s memory we will also be looking at running a charity event later in the year, more information to follow, Maria Smith & Stuart Murdy

Sat July 8th We are having a produce sale just along from the Spar shop (right) Please come along and support us by buying our delicious cakes preserves and vegetables. Our annual open day at the allotment site will be on Sat 29th July where we will be serving Tea and cakes as well as having other produce stalls and displays. You can view the allotments if you have never seen them and perhaps even be tempted to take one on. We currently have a whole plot and some half sized plots free and it is possible to have someone dig them over by machine at a small cost to get started (less daunting that way). It is very rewarding to eat your own fresh fruit and veg at this time of year. Kay Edwards
Wingfield and District Gardening Club Last month we heard from Mike Dean about the butterflies of Suffolk. Surprisingly there is no great difference between moths and butterflies in their components, but one usually sees moths at night and butterflies in the daytime. He described their life cycle, eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult. The adults usually fly away from their original area, so preventing inbreeding in the next generation. Mike provided us with lovely pictures of those found in Suffolk; Silver Washed fritillary, Holly blue, the Green Veined Essex Skipper. Commas used to be found on hops but now feeds on nettles, plus Red Admirals, Wall Browns and Peacocks. The Small Tortoiseshell is now scarse and Purple Hairstreak lives high on Oak trees. He also described how populations fluctuate due to the fluctuation with other insects and ants. We next meet on 28th September at Brundish Village Hall to hear a talk by Johan Vanderberg-Hider on Water in the Garden. 7.30pm. C Treylen

During the election campaign, my team and I visited every part of the constituency on at least one occasion – from Palgrave and Metfield in the North, Kesgrave and North Ipswich in the South, Wickham Market in the East, Cotton in the West, Hoxne, Debenham, Eye, Framlingham and many more in between. I was in North Ipswich nearly every day and was very pleased that the election period allowed me to give my undivided attention to residents, whilst also giving me the opportunity to listen to people’s views and have numerous conversations which will help me to better represent you over the next five years. I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me during the last Parliament as well as during the weeks of the General Election campaign itself and, of course, my thanks go to everyone that voted for me in the General Election. I am also enormously grateful for the hundreds of messages of support and encouragement that I have received. I shall be replying to all of them now that the election is over. In the months and years ahead, my priority will always be to represent the people of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich to the very best of my ability. I shall be fulfilling my promises to support our NHS throughout the constituency, to protect Suffolk’s countryside and to work with County Council colleagues to improve broadband coverage and mobile phone reception in our County. It is an enormous honour and privilege to be elected to represent the residents of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich again in Parliament and I shall do my utmost to fulfil the trust that has been placed in me and continue to work hard and do my best for all my constituents. Letters to the Editor Would the person or persons who kindly took the tin and money from the veg stall in Queens Street please let me have the tin back as it was so right for the stall. Don’t just take it, I’ll give it to you if you are so desperate. Mary Ellis Thank you to everyone who supported the vintage tea for St Elizabeth Hospice. Even though we had rain in the morning, we still managed to raise £150 for this very good cause. It was a lovely to see some new faces. Thank you again. Mary Thompson After 23 years of being part of the village community, the time has now come for me to move nearer my family in East Sussex. Living in Stradbroke has been a joy, and serving The Lord Jesus Christ to the best of my ability in Stradbroke baptist church was a very important part of my life. Thank you everyone for your well wishes. I have many fond memories, and will never forget certain people. Thank you also for your generosity in giving to the Christian charity Hope Now, which I will hopefully continue to support in my new church. Goodbye Stradbroke Jackie Hughes
