National Swimathon Success for Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre has claimed Swimathon stardom amongst the 604 pools throughout the UK that took part. The long established yearly Swimathon raises money for charity, which this year was for Marie Curie Cancer Care, by individuals and teams taking on a swim challenge… It is the world’s biggest fund raising swim. Stradbroke organisers Maria Smith, Len Phoenix and the centre’s huge group of 191 swimmers were ecstatic when in Sundays final session (9 in all) Swimathon HQ confirmed the pool was ranked in Second UK Position and first regionally. The Stradbroke centre is a microdot compared to the large city/town complexes, BUT its colossal team appetite and enthusiasm persuaded a large and varied group of swimmers to “Take on the Challenge” and live up to SLM site’s motto of “Everyone Active”. The result is amazing. Our small North Suffolk centre is a top National Achiever. The swimmers taking part encompassed an enormous and various group of participants. It ranged from 2 year old Matthew Whatling from the pool’s toddler group, heading out a team of adult learners including his grandmother, with a one length swim; to 71 year old George Knapp, a weekly pool user, who is paralysed from the chest down with his team of carers amassing an incredible 170 lengths for their Swimathon challenge. The pool’s nine sessions also included a Saturday group of 35 youngsters ranging from 6 to 12 year olds from the centre’s successful swim school and swim club sessions. Many of these youngsters massively exceeded expectation with some outstanding swims, such as organiser Len’s 10 year old grand-daughter Annalise Smith and Henri Gooch having entered 1.5k carried on to complete a fantastic 5k swim. The youngest swimmer was 6 year old Ella Townsend who easily nailed a 1.5k swim while the more experienced swim club member 12 year old George Tooley completed a 5k swim in an amazing 1hr 27min in all this session produced countless achievements that just simply astounded parents, family members and organisers/Instructors. This Stradbroke phenomenal swim also included 5 sessions from Tuesday to Friday evening that accommodated the pool’s popular Swimfit swimmers and other regular pool users, most of who completed the 5k challenge. Fastest males were Mark Nowell & Angus Western both 1hr 17mins and fastest female Julia Green – 1hr 23mins, in a close contest with an amazing swim from organiser Maria Smith – 1hr 24mins to complete her 19th consecutive Swimathon. Finally veteran organiser and Swimathoner Len Phoenix notched up his 26th swim. Sunday completed this colossal Stradbroke effort with an extravaganza of 20 teams taking part in highly charged and exciting carnival atmosphere. Organisers Maria and Len summed this biggest ever 21st Stradboke Swimathon as “a huge team effort that has bought together a large number of the centre users producing countless and amazing achievement. We are also sure it will raise incredible amount money for Marie Curie Cancer Trust” Finally a big thank you to SLM who run the centre, for backing and supporting this event. They too are blown away with Stradbroke’s result. The overall result is just simply “SWIMTASTIC”. Total amount raised so far is £8400 with total increasing daily! Len Phoenix (Swim Coach)

Message from Jackie Due to various important news items in our own country, the ongoing war in Ukraine has not received much publicity, however the killing continues regardless of the supposed ‘ceasefire’. Several soldiers and civilians are killed daily and the exodus of innocent victims continues. It is reported that over one million people have been displaced. One lady reputedly refused to leave her house because she had saved up for many years to buy a fridge, and she didn’t want the Russians to have it! This is just one of many sad stories. The Churches in the safer areas of Ukraine are supporting these displaced people by opening their doors, giving food, clothing and a place to stay. “Hope Now” supports this work by taking money and clothes to Ukraine. It is reported that each day at 7am whatever the weather people meet in the centre of towns to pray and ask God to help in their country. We at Stradbroke Baptist Church are twinned with a small Church in the village of Borovistya. This small group of people regularly take a lorry load of food, clothes and other items to the soldiers fighting for their country. Our Church at Stradbroke has recently been able to send £250 to help with this venture. The work of “Hope Now” continues to help people of all ages in preparing young adults for independent living, and assisting the elderly in their struggle for survival. I would like to once again thank everyone for their gifts of knitted items and warm clothes collected since last September, I was planning to take your gifts to Ukraine in late summer this year. However in March I unfortunately broke my ankle and won’t be fit enough to go, but I hope to be able to visit in January. In the past British Airways has allowed us to take 69 kilos of luggage, but this is now reduced to 46 kilos. In the Church we have collected at least this amount in weight due to your generous giving, and until this has been taken to Ukraine I am unable to collect or accept further items. I will keep you updated as time passes. Thank you once again for your gifts. Please remember Ukraine in your prayers as Jackie Details: Churches Together in Stradbroke - Village Family Service John Ling 388751 (Church Elder) All Saints & Baptist Churches on 5th July at 10:30am Jackie Hughes 384112 ( Church At Baptist Church – Everyone welcome In Stradbroke Administrator)

A Message from Rev Susan Dear Friends & Neighbours, Many of our churches have enjoyed hosting weddings and Rev Peter and I have had the privilege of getting to know the couples a little, which is always a joy. At one of the weddings I conducted a member of our congregation sang while the registers were being signed, he sang Love, love changes everything; which got me thinking about love and the difference it makes to our lives. There are of course, different kinds of love: the love between a couple, family members or friends, can all be encouraging and help to make life worth living. Yet, if our experience of love is of a wrong kind of love, maybe conditional or some other motive behind it, it can damage us and we in turn can damage others. The kind of love that Jesus talks about when he commands us to love one another is a love that is a forgiving, accepting love that wants other people to be free. It is a love that wants the best for another, it is a love that is patient and kind, and keeps no record of wrongs. When we know deep down that we are loved, we feel confident and can live without worrying all the time if we are getting things right or wrong. That is what God wants for each one of us. So if for any reason you are feeling down or lonely, or even lacking in confidence, turn your attention to Jesus who loves us more than we can ever know and ask God our Father to fill you with his love. Then you may find that the words to the song are true; love, love changes everything (for the better). God bless you, Susan

Stradbroke Parish Council

The Parish Pump!

Next meeting of the Parish Council in the Community Centre on Monday 8th June at 7.30pm.

MEETING OF THE PARISH COUNCIL 18 May 2015 23 members of the public attended the meeting. PUBLIC FORUM: Two matters were brought to the attention of the Council: A view was put forward that the editing of the Stradbroke Monthly could, on occasion, be seen to be biased whereby items submitted that were critical of a past member of the Council were regularly either not published or only published after alteration, even when names were not mentioned. It was stated that other opinion was often quoted in full. The Council was criticised for not holding a public consultation on the hosting of Stradisphere 2015 on the Playing Field despite letters from residents complaining about the noise levels. It was reiterated that a presentation had been made to the Council and reassurances given that noise and bass levels would be strictly monitored and that stages and equipment would be sited further away from dwellings. CHAIRMAN’S REPORT to the April Meeting: due to the restrictions of purdah a full report could not be published in the last edition of the magazine and an anonymised version, although deemed acceptable by legal opinion, was not seen as such by the editors and was not published. A complaint had been made to the Monitoring Officer of MSDC, by the Chairman on behalf of the Clerk, about James Hargrave’s behaviour towards the Clerk which she viewed as bullying and a breach of the code of Conduct. The following is the pertinent, unexpurgated, part of the Monitoring Officer’s letter as read out by the Chairman at the April meeting of the Council: The Board wanted it to be known that they take very seriously any breach of the Code of Conduct and resolved: That it be found that Mr Hargrave has breached the Suffolk Local Code of Conduct for Members (‘Code of Conduct’) by not treating others with respect and possibly bullying. That Mr Hargrave formally apologises to Mrs Smy and that this be recorded in the Stradbroke Parish Council Minutes. The Chairman read the letter in its entirety and stated that an apology had been made and accepted and from the point of view of the Chairman and Clerk the matter was now concluded; comment and discussion would cease. PLANNING (further details can be obtained from the Clerk): Application for consideration: 1195/15 erection of 3 bed dwelling including new access, off street parking and landscaping and additional parking to front of No 68 Westhall 68 Westhall Refusal was recommended for the above application Results of planning applications considered by MSDC since the PC last met: Planning permission granted for: 0748/15 new dwelling etc Land at White Hart, Church Street 0939/15 installation of solar photo voltaic panels Brooklands Barn, Mill Lane OTHER BUSINESS: This was the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council, the first of the new term of four years. New Councillors were Carrie Barnes, Don Darling, Richard Pierce-Saunderson and Ellie Wharton. Stuart Gemmill was elected Chairman by a majority vote; Oliver Last was re-elected Vice Chairman. Members were elected to the various committees and working parties. CHURCHYARD TIDY UP: a working party of councillors would meet at 10am in the Churchyard on 07 June 2015 to have a general tidy up of the area and remove some of the accumulated debris. A report on the condition of the headstones would be presented at the June PC meeting. Any willing helpers would be very welcome…no need to book a place, just turn up! LIBRARY & COURTHOUSE: a decision on opening hours, following the consultation should be known in July NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN: things had been quiet but the results of traffic surveys in Queens Street and New Street were available to view on stradbrokeonline. The search was on for possible pieces of land that could be identified as being suitable for future development. POLICE REPORT: since the last meeting there had been 6 crimes: 1 x theft and five crimes that could not be reported as information was not deemed to be in the public interest. Members of the public and press are very welcome to attend meetings of the Parish Council and to bring matters of concern or information to the attention to Members in the time allocated to the Public Forum, which takes place prior to the start of every meeting. Minutes of the meetings are held in the Library and are posted on the Notice Board and stradbrokeonline.org.uk. The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held in the Community Centre at 7.30pm on Monday, 08 June 2015. Life in the Legion “Life in the Legion”. Retired Air Line Pilot, Ernie Constable, was the guest speaker at the midday May meeting of the branch, held at Laxfield King’s Head; his talk was most interesting. John Graham (Branch Vice-Chairman) gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the members. I presided at the meeting and mentioned a very good turnout around the village War Memorial to mark V.E. Day on Friday, May 8th. During a recent visit to Staffordshire I laid a Royal British Legion Poppy Wreath, on behalf of the Branch, on the main memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum. Reports were given by Bernard Mills (Treasurer) and Joyce Cooper (Welfare Officer). The next branch meeting will be on Thursday, June 11th. at Laxfield King’s Head, starting at 11.30am when the guest speaker will be Tony St.Quinton, a retired major from Brundish. Members please attend if you are able, lunch for two is at a special rate of £7. Michael Burton (Branch Chairman)

W.I. Our President welcomed members to our May Meeting and sent good wishes to those who were poorly after which we sang Jerusalem. Our WI meeting was also short of members due to the Service being held in the Church, but nevertheless the 19 members that turned out on a wet evening enjoyed themselves. A Birthday Buttonhole was taken by a member for Carol Philpot’s Birthday as unfortunately she was too poorly to attend the meeting. The Secretary and President gave out business matters, which included details of a planned outing in September to Holkham Hall, a hymn that David Streeter had written for our 90th Anniversary and the results of the very good litter pick that we carried out in the month of March – collecting 6 very large bags of rubbish and a huge number of bottles etc in the village. We had also held a Ballot for a Bursary which Lorraine won and she told us that she wanted to do a cookery course and hopefully will go to Denman for the course there. Congratulations were given to Sue Gray who had been presented with a basket of roses and a card from all members for her 80th Birthday in April. Prue Rush kindly took us through this year’s Resolution Paperwork concerning ‘Failing to Care – Assessment of need in long term care’. After the introduction and much discussion a vote was taken which upheld this resolution which will be taken to the AGM to be held in the Albert Hall in June. We held a Beetle and Beatles evening and had a thoroughly enjoyable and noisy time. Gwyneth Harris was the winner and Vera Dowsett got the booby prize of an Easter Egg. This was followed by tea, coffee and the draw of the raffle. Next month’s Meeting is a talk on Leprosy by Linda Culwick and the Competition is a single flower. Stradbroke Primary School This term is always a busy one as we prepare for our summer events...... Sports Day, our end of year performance, led by Miss Legood ......and many more. This year is even busier, as we are planning to complete the celebrations for our 150th Birthday with a whole school picnic and Open Evening on Wednesday 8th July. If you have link with the school you are welcome to join us. Details will be posted on our website. If you have any photographs or memorabilia you could share with us, we would be very grateful. Our recent Friends of the School 'Family Quiz Night' was a huge success thanks to all their efforts and the fabulous work of quiz master Tina Abbott! With approximately 20 teams taking part, the hall was lively and buzzing with brain power as everyone battled for the winning place. After 8 written and 1 half time picture round.. the scores were totalled ....with the teacher's team - Perseverance - As the victorious winners! It was fantastic to see so many people supporting the event and having a good night out. The friends support school in so many ways and we are very grateful. Their next event is our Summer Fair on Friday 3rd July at the school, so do come and join us then. This year's Year 6 Residential Trip to Hollowford in Derbyshire is one of the largest trips we have taken, with over 70 children from the Stradbroke Pyramid attending. With 11 staff accompanying them, they will be spending 5 days in the beautiful Peak District, weaselling, climbing, caving, raft building and hill walking. With a visit to one of the famous caverns, fantastic instructors, food and accommodation, they will work together to build confidence, try new challenges and enjoy a different part of our country. A marvellous opportunity for all. As the term draws to a close, we are always sad to say goodbye to our leavers, but look forward to welcoming our new intake. We have several welcome mornings planned for them this term, where they can meet their new teachers and classmates to help them settle quickly and confidently into Class 1. Again, dates are posted on our website. Looking forward to enjoying our outdoor events in the sunshine! Linda Walsh, Head of School

Friends of Stradbroke High School (FOSH) Our fundraising continues to go from strength to strength with £500 having just been donated to the School following an application to the Heveningham Hall Country Fair Trust. This is in addition to the £1000 from the East of England Co-op. This will all go towards the new floodlights for the Astro-turf at the School. Our latest quiz night was also resounding success with more people and in particular pupils than ever before. Sponsored by the Happy House Chinese restaurant in Eye, we were all able to enjoy a few Chinese delights whist trying to get the questions right! Our scrap metal collection was also amazing with more scrap collected than ever before – with even a car being donated! The garden equipment sale also went extremely well with over £500 raised so far. This event was sponsored by the Stradbroke Bakery. Our new venture that of the second hand School Uniform shop continues to grow and develop with more contributions coming in from leaving Year 11 pupils. Our future events are now planned as follows: On Saturday the 6th of June 2015 from 8am – 1pm: We will organise a new Car Boot sale and café event in the High School car park. This event is sponsored by the Stradbroke Spar store and also Katie’s Kitchen café in Diss. The Stradbroke High School CARnival. This is now all organised for Sunday the 13th of September 2015 10am – 4pm. After the huge success of last years event, we intend more classic and performance cars & bikes, 50+ art and craft stalls, live music, aircraft fly-past, bouncy castles, Lazer Blast, huge fair ground rides and of course lots of food, drink and ice-cream. We’ve decided to keep the entry price low and the same as last year at only £3 for all adults and Under 16’s free. With a wet weather plan in place using the Schools large sports hall, this event will be a great day out for all the family come rain or shine. Future dates are: Saturday the 7th of November 2015 – Scrap metal collection. Friday the 20th of November 2015 – Quiz night. Saturday the 28th of November 2015 – a new Christmas Art and Craft Fair – details to follow. Stradbroke Archive and Records Association-SARA The next Archive Sunday takes place in the Court House, Stradbroke on 31st May from 10am until noon. If you want to look at census returns from 1841 to 1911 they will be available to search. Why not look up family members, or come and find out who was living in your house, or road in Stradbroke many years ago? We also have computers available to show you how to use the library historical archives and of course the Stradbroke Digital Archive is available too!! We're here to help! This month marks the Centenary anniversary of the first of Stradbroke's sons to have died in battle during the first world war. His name was Eli Holmes and he died on the 25th May 1915. There is no record to be found of the circumstances of his sacrifice although the Suffolk Regimental Calendar lists on the 8th May 1915 that the 1st Battalion was overwhelmed at the battle for Frezenberg Ridge, Ypres. Eli was born in 1891 to Henry and Elizabeth Holmes of New Street, Stradbroke. He had 8 siblings - 3 brothers, 4 sisters and a half sister. On the 1911 census return he is shown to be a Farm Labourer living in the home of his father who is by this time is a 51 year old widower. Private Eli Holmes is Remembered with Honour on Stradbroke's War Memorial and is also named on Panal 21 at the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. During 2014 a group of students from Stradbroke High School took a British Legion Cross to the Ypes Memorial and placed it there in his memory and with respect. A delightful and informative place to visit, this garden has been started from scratch and included a sunken portion to give interest and alternative habitat. This garden was the product of 40 years careful gardening, and it showed! Our next outing is on the 13th June. Meet at the community centre for a visit to The Old Swan and Lodge Farm House at 10.30am. C Treylan

Calling all volunteers to help create colourful fun! The count down has begun to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) Ipswich Colour Dash and organisers calling for any willing volunteers to help on the day. The EACH Colour Dash will be held on Sunday 7th June, in Christchurch Park, Ipswich. Colour dashes are the newest craze to hit the UK and see participants race around a 5km course as they are showered with clouds of coloured powder – creating truly impressive multi-coloured results! Event organisers are asking anyone who doesn’t feel energetic enough to take part but would still like to be involved in the colourful fun to consider volunteering as a marshal on the day. More than 500 places have been sold so far for the colour dash but spaces are still available. Patsy said: “We’ve had pallets full of paint powder lots of colours delivered last week and a mountain of white t-shirts and medals so we’re nearly all set for a fun day! Places for the day are selling really well, so if you do want to take part I’d encourage you to book now to avoid disappointment.” The Samboomba Band will be coming along on the day to keep participants and well wishers entertained. The event had kindly been sponsored by Pure Resourcing Solutions (Pure) in Ipswich. The EACH Ipswich Colour Dash will be held on Sunday 7th June, in Christchurch Park, Ipswich. Tickets are available now - adult (£20) child (£10) Team (£175) Family (£45). For more information on the Ipswich Colour Dash, and to book your place, visit www.each.org.uk/colourdash. To offer your support as a volunteer marshal on the day please contact the Suffolk Fundraising Team on 01473 276196. Patsy Johnson

Gardens open to the public in Wingfield for St Elizabeth Hospice Gardens across Wingfield will be open to the public in June in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice. This year’s event will feature 24 front garden scarecrow displays and 13 back gardens, as well as a sculpture trail. The sculpture trail will feature work from Norfolk sculptors John Nicholson, who works in steel and has previously exhibited at Bergh Apton, who will be joined by Kally Davidson, a 3D textile artist. There will also be plant sales in several gardens including garden crafts. The gardens in Wingfield will be open on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th June from 11am to 5pm (12noon start on Sunday), and entry is 4.2€ per person, accompanied under 16s free. All funds raised for the Hospice will go towards helping provide vital care and support to local people living with a progressive illness, and their families and carers, across East Suffolk. St Elizabeth Hospice costs millions of pounds a year to run and relies on donations, fundraising events and the income generated from its shops to meet the majority of these costs. Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club If a cricket club is judged purely upon results, Stradbroke have made a disastrous start to the season. Their only win in the first month came by courtesy of a concession by Bury St Edmunds. The reasons for this abject set of results lies more at the door of those not playing, rather than those who do. Availability of players is an issue. Sometimes actually getting eleven players on the field feels like a victory! Once the game starts, the effort & commitment cannot be called into question. Even when placed behind the eight ball, those levels never drop, nor does the enjoyment factor. Losses against Eye, Battisford, Yoxford, Exning, Brockley, & Needham Market in league games, contrasts with two backs to the wall draws against Old Newton & Laxfield in Academy matches. To the fore is 14yo Brett Cotton, who is now a regular league player. This shows when he plays at age group & Academy standard. He already has 20 wickets this season including 4 v Laxfield, 5 v Mellis & 6 v Old Newton. A few more like him could see the club turn the corner. Never a club that stands still, two exciting new initiatives have started. Ladies training & coaching has commenced, with 9 new players giving it a go. The next sessions are on Wednesday 3rd, 24th June & 1st July. If you are female and fancy giving cricket a go, contact Kate Thompson on 668169. The other venture is Turbo 10, an even shorter version of cricket. It is 6 a side, games last about an hour, and is targeted at anyone who would like to try cricket, used to play cricket, or just cannot commit the time to the longer game. On Friday nights in July & August it is hoped to have a ‘league’ of 6 teams based around Stradbroke. Age or experience is no barrier. Details soon! That’s all. Support your local cricket club! Michael Hugman

Feeling under the weather ? We want to encourage everyone not to ignore the signs and symptoms of illness, to get the help and advice they need in order to stay healthy and avoid an unnecessary hospital stay. There are a number of healthcare options: NHS 111 for help and advice on urgent medical matters. When the GP surgery is closed and it’s not a lifethreatening emergency, then call NHS 111. Counting the Parish Council Votes: The Grass Skirt Method A Personal View. On Saturday May 9th, the votes for Stradbroke Parish Council were due to be counted at the Suffolk Show Ground. I and four others from Stradbroke went to observe how it was done. We were not allowed to take photographs and so I have tried to explain in words what happened. Of all the parishes in Suffolk, Stradbroke had the most candidates. There were 18 candidates and so the voting form was the longest in the County. There were only 13 places available on the Council, so five candidates would be disappointed. While the votes were being bundled up into 25’s, they were first looked at to remove those where no votes had been cast and also those where more than 13 candidates had been voted for. All potential spoiled papers were gathered up and presented one after another to a team made up of we three candidates and two visitors from Stradbroke. We had to agree or disagree with the decisions that the officers had made. In fact we agreed with all of them. Some people had voted for 18, some for 14 or more. Just a few had things written on the voting sheets including just a very few with insults. Some were completely blank. All these rejects were bundled together and the total carefully recorded. This total was announced later when the final results were declared. Using two lines of double-sided tape, each group of 25 voting papers which had been accepted was fixed to a large sheet of card marked out into squares. It took time and care to fix them in an overlapping way. I suppose that is why this method has the splendid name of the ‘grass skirt method’. However, when it was finished every vote for every candidate given on those 25 papers could be clearly seen against the name of the candidate. Perhaps it is a rather an imaginative name to choose for this process, but it is a very clever, simple and reliable way of making sure that no votes are lost or miscounted. The rows are then counted horizontally to give the total number of votes on each sheet for each candidate. They are then also counted vertically to show how many votes could have been cast, but weren’t. The two totals were then multiplied and when all correctly balanced some more transparent tape was pulled across the whole array, so making it impossible to add or replace any of the voting slips. Gradually the pile of competed sheets grew until there were no more voting papers to fix. For some Parish Councils in other parts of the hall the totals on each ‘grass skirt sheet’ were entered in pencil on to a master sheet to get the final total. In our case they were entered on to a computer spreadsheet line by line together with the number of the master sheet. Everything was checked and double checked. All this was going on in a central area marked out by tables which we observers could not enter, but all the processes including the totalling was done on those tables placed around the outside, closely observed by candidates and other visitors who patrolled up and down. It was very carefully designed so that none of those officials working on the count could alter what the voters had decided. Everything and everyone is under observation all the time. Finally, there was then an announcement by the Recording Officer and we knew for certain who were the 13 who had been voted on to Stradbroke Parish Council for the next four years. I am pleased to say that it included yours truly: Gerald Jenkins. G Jenkins

The Stradbroke Directory Now that the elections are over and the new Parish Council is installed, the editors of Stradbroke Online are preparing a new Stradbroke Directory. The last one was produced in 2013 and there are no doubt many entries apart from the PC which need to be updated. Although all the details can be found on (www. StradbrokeOnlineorg.uk) many residents like to have a paper copy available for ease of access. If you, or your organisation, are mentioned in the paper directory and/or the online version, please check if the entries need to be changed. If you are not mentioned in the directory and would like to be or if you would like to add additional information, please send your details and we will endeavour to include them. Can we also take this opportunity to mention village event planning. Stradbroke Online has a calendar which is not time limited and so organisations can publish their events as soon as the dates have been determined. This not only helps your club or society but it others avoid clashes. Do send us details of all your events as soon as the dates have been arranged and we will include them in the calendar. If you haven’t finalised all the details don’t worry these can be added later. Don Darling (388098) Gerald Jenkins (394825) Roger Turkington (384248) Email: admin@Stradbrokeonline.org.uk

All is well with the world. Well it continues to roll around the sun on its ceaseless journey though space, but I digress. Everything is growing madly. Plants shoot up six inches over night and the bare earth is starting to show signs that our seed sowing was successful. Chickens are happily going broody and laying again regularly. But not all is well in our little paradise. The gardeners in you will roll their eyes when I say, Slugs, Rooks, Pigeons and Caterpillers. The bane of our existence. Such a fight to grow against these villains. But we persevere, net everything and hope that come end of summer we will have something to show for it. We plan to be open when Stradbroke Open Gardens has it annual event on Sunday June 14th. So come along and see how inventive we are at keeping pests at bay. We are now down to 2 and a ½ plots left. The soil is just right for planting now so it is not too late to begin growing things. Runner Beans, Squashes, Cucumbers, and many other plants are only now going in the ground. Many local nurseries have plenty of plants available to plant now. Contact me for more details on helenpleasance@talk21.com. Helen Pleasance

News & Views (cont.) The 1st Stradbroke Triathlon A Participant’s View It was a glorious day for the Stradbroke Triathlon on Sunday, May 17th and the 147 competitors eagerly queued from 7.00am to register. For many of us it was our first triathlon and we were rather nervous about what to expect. This only increased when we saw the old hands – those competitors who participated in national events, spent £6,000 - £8,000 on a bike and were sleekly dressed in expensive tri-suits. We watched in awe as they went through a series of extraordinary warm-up exercises while we sipped on water – not too much for obvious reasons. Humility reigned as I looked at my bike, Douglas, with his 6 gears and only 4 working. Perhaps this was a big mistake. But no time for doubts as we were quickly herded to the pool-side, fitted with individual chips for timings then every 30 seconds competitors into the water. ‘Nice to see someone wearing a bright swimsuit’ exclaimed the ref to me making me feel even more an outsider as the only one not wearing black. Time up and in and off. From then on it was a whirl and, most surprisingly, really thrilling. All sense of nausea and inadequacy disappeared and I was actually enjoying it! The Marshalls along the cycle route shouted great encouragement – I cannot thank them enough for that as it was a real boost. The wind was not kind between Horham and Worlingworth and the never-ending desert of ‘The Tannington Straight’ was a challenge but it was exciting and the adrenaline was pumping even when Wiggo Mark 2 whooshed past in his space-age helmet with his solid wheels merely a blur. The run was the hardest part – my legs felt like blocks of wood but such great encouragement from the Marshalls and spectators made me press on. Suddenly it was all over..the finishing line crossed and my chip processed. A terrific feeling of achievement was felt by all of us – there were group hugs and much laughter – we’d done it. There were lots of amazing winners (see Stradbrokeonline.org.uk for the full results) although we had all won in our own way. From signing-up in November to battling through training with Moira in the grim winter months to actually completing. It was a fantastic event and I cannot praise the Pool/Gym highly enough for organisation and support especially Callum Towler who has spent hours preparing for the perfect day. I hope to see you all there next year! Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley

Thank you. I was honoured to be returned as Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich last Friday and delighted to be given the added bonus of an increased majority. I would like to thank everyone for the confidence that they have shown in me and for the enormous support for which I am enormously appreciative. During the election campaign, my team and I visited every part of the constituency on at least one occasion – from Palgrave and Metfield in the North, Kesgrave and North Ipswich in the South, Wickham Market in the East, Cotton in the West and many more in between. I was very pleased that the election period allowed me to give my undivided attention to residents as well as giving me the opportunity to listen to people’s views and have numerous conversations which will help me to better represent you over the next five years. I would also like to thank everyone who has supported me during the five years of the last Parliament as well as during the weeks of the election campaign and, of course, my thanks go to everyone that voted for me in the General Election. I am also enormously grateful for the hundreds of messages of support and encouragement that I have received. I shall be replying to all of them now that the election is over. In the months and years ahead, my priority will always be to represent the people of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich to the best of my ability. I shall be fulfilling my promises to support our NHS throughout the constituency, to protect Suffolk’s countryside and to work with County Council colleagues to improve broadband coverage and mobile phone reception in our County. It is an enormous honour and privilege to be elected to represent the residents of Central Suffolk and North Ipswich again in Parliament and I shall do my utmost to fulfil the trust that has been placed in me and continue to work hard and do my best for all my constituents. Letters to the Editor New District Councillor. I would like to thank everyone for their kind support in the run up to and on the day of the local election and look forward to representing our community at Mid Suffolk in the coming years. Best wishes, Julie Flatman It seems with every edition of the Stradbroke Monthly there is a letter complaining about irresponsible dog owners. As a dog owner myself it is important that we are responsible and pick up our dogs waste and dispose of it to keep our village clean. However, whilst out walking my dog past the tennis courts I noticed a dog owner had failed to do this and someone had circled the offending dog poo and written "DOG OWNERS ARE ALSO ANIMALS" in pen. I am a responsible dog owner and not an animal. I understand your frustration as a dog owner it angers me also but is it really necessary to graffiti the pavement! Liz Stevens Thank You. Horham and Athelington Community Council wish to thank all those who came to the Horham Fete on Saturday, we made £860 for the Playground fund. M Streeter Most people, even those who do not use computers, are aware of the, often tragic, consequences of unkindness and bullying that occurs on social media, eg Facebook Twitter and blogs. I think that this means of indirect communication is very cowardly. Some people seem to find it easier to criticise and attack people with whom they disagree, through Facebook etc. rather than making the effort to meet them face to face and discuss differences. I believe that people who use Social media for this purpose, are not interested in resolving issues, but only in keeping resentment simmering and boosting their own egos. Over the past two years, there have been many disagreements in the village, which have been inflamed by postings on social media. I personally feel that in most cases, things would have settled down in time, if people had not resorted to these personal attacks and been adult enough to seek a compromise. As it is, a lot of unhappiness has been caused, and many villagers feel that the good of the village has not been made a priority. This is an appeal to those people who are genuinely interested in working for the future of Stradbroke, to attempt to heal wounds rather than allowing these undercurrents to continue. Carol Darling Bonfire Etiquette. Long summer days in the garden are again on the agenda for most of us. This means rubbish to dispose of and a bonfire is often the way to do it. If you do plan to have a garden fire or use an incinerator please do show consideration for your neighbours; try to site the fire as far away from others as possible and check the wind direction before lighting up and during the life of the fire. Please do not build a fire so large that it cannot be extinguished easily. If bonfires happen frequently they can be considered a nuisance and an abatement notice issued; failure to comply with that can result in a fine of up to £5,000. If possible take your garden rubbish to the Waste Disposal Site or sign up for Mid Suffolk’s garden waste collection. Carol Smy
