board games cafe nights Week night Coffee Bar? Free drink offer! This is a reminder to all those of you who work, or go to school or college and cannot get to the Court House Café during the day or at weekends. On Monday, 14th March between 7pm and 9pm please come along, bring friends; have a free coffee or non-alcoholic drink; and enjoy yourselves. We are considering opening some evenings each month as a coffee bar, ESPECIALLY for those who cannot come during the day, so they might meet friends, talk to each other, play computer or board games together, use the Wi-fi etc; but we cannot do any of that without your support. On that evening we will have some board games to play, or you might want to bring your own, but we just want you to come along and enjoy yourself (playing games will not be compulsory!) in a very relaxed atmosphere. If you cannot come that night but are interested in, or have ideas about, regular informal evening events, please tell Maureen in the library or contact one of us: Terry ( terryrose10@gmail.com), Laura ( laura.injac@hotmail.com) or Nikki (nikki@nicolamcdonagh.com) On behalf of SCALT
Stradbroke High School Head to Retire Andrew Bloom, Headteacher at Stradbroke High School, has announced his retirement in the summer saying that although he will be sad to leave, “It has been a privilege and honour to have been the Headteacher of Stradbroke High School over the past six years. During this time the school has seen many changes and has developed into one of the most successful Secondary Schools in Suffolk and indeed the country, both in terms of the results that pupils achieve and the progress that they make during their time with us.” In a recent letter to parents, Mr Bloom added; “The Chair of Governors, Andrew Smith, has already begun the process for recruiting my successor and will keep all members of the school community updated on progress towards a new appointment.” Sally Clarke

Ukraine With the ongoing conflict and the human suffering in the Middle East, the situation in Ukraine has been pushed from the news headlines, but sadly there is still a great need for relief and support. This extract is from a letter dated 17th Feb. “Sadly the last few months has seen an escalation of fighting in the East of Ukraine with now more soldiers killed in two years than in the whole war in Afghanistan of coalition forces. Add to that another cold winter with increasing fuel costs, life is becoming more difficult for so many people.” Recently a group from the Christian charity “Hope Now” visited to take gifts and celebrate with them their Christmas on the 6th January. On arrival in Kiev they were greeted with temperature of minus 22 with snow 15 inches deep. We continue to support “Hope Now” and have recently sent them a gift of £250, some of this money has been raised at our monthly coffee morning*. Part of our gift is going to the town of Cherkassy where a property known as The Nest which is owned by an elderly lady has been opened up to provide shelter and a safe home for several ladies who have problems caused often by an abusive drunken husbands, or their own illness. Funds from the UK will provide food and beds as well as helping to upgrade the accommodation, In fact due to local poverty the hospital in Cherkassy has received help from “Hope Now” to purchase much needed equipment for their burns unit. A personal message from Jackie: For those kind people who have been knitting or giving warm clothes for Ukraine, your gifts will be passed on in April at the AGM. Any further gifts, please let me know or bring it to the Church. I can guarantee that everything sent is distributed to those in desperate need, whether it’s a pair of socks or a thick warm coat. And The Good News! Zozulenka the Ukrainian singing and dancing young people’s group will be returning to Stradbroke in November, watch for full details later. Our Coffee morning is on the 4th Wednesday of each month, all proceeds from donations or sale of goods goes directly without deduction to charity. Please feel free to drop in! (Wednesday 23rd March from 10am) Contact: John Ling 388751 (Church Elder) Jackie Hughes 384112 (Church Administrator)

All Saints – A message from Rev. Susan Last month I talked about love, this month the theme continues as we make our way from mothering Sunday, which in my opinion should be a celebration of family life - not just mothers or mother church but families biological, adopted and spiritual. I mention spiritual families because some of us do not have much of a biological family or adopted family, yet God has given us spiritual mothers, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles: If you belong to a church family you will (hopefully) understand what I am talking about. The psalmist says, Our God, from your sacred home you take care of orphans and protect widows. You find families for those who are lonely. (Psalm 68 verses 5 & 6a), I have found this to be true. When Jesus was hanging in agony on the cross, he looked down at his disciple John and his mother Mary and said, ‘this is your mother, this is your son.’ In other words in the midst of his pain, Jesus made provision for them by making them family. In the same way, that without sadness, happiness is not quite so great, and without darkness, light would be of no consequence, so to, if we want to know the joy and celebration of Easter Day we must first try to enter into Jesus’ suffering in the way of the cross. Easter is the most important time for Christians; it is a time to rejoice that Jesus the son of God has done all that is necessary for us to be a part of God’s family both here and into eternity. I hope you will join us this Lent and Easter time as we follow the way of the cross to the wonder and joy of Easter Day. There are lots of different kinds of services and events for you to come along too this month, you are welcome to come and be a part of God’s family here in Suffolk, even if for just a short time. I leave you with an Easter blessing prayer: May you know in your life the power and presence of the risen Lord, let his love and light fill you: and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit be upon you this day and for evermore. Amen. Rev’d Susan Loxton

Life in the Legion—The Royal British Legion (Stradbroke and District Branch) From the Branch Chairman’s Desk. Since my last notes, our annual Christmas Carols and lunch, at Laxfield Kings Head, has taken place, and branch officers and members attended the Memorial Service for the Revd. David Streeter at St.Mary’s Horham. David will be very much missed by all in the branch. The guest speaker at our February meeting was former professional footballer Alwyn (Ollie) Burton; who played for Norwich City, Newcastle United and Wales (10 caps); he brought along Cups, a Welsh Schoolboy Cap,which was framed, and other memorabilia which were of great interest to the eighteen members and guests present. On their behalf I gave the vote of thanks. During the business part of the meeting Branch Treasurer and Secretary, Bernard Mills, presented the financial statement and gave reports on the Suffolk County Royal British Legions annual conference, held at Needham Market, which he attended as the branch delegate. The Annual Branch Dinner on Friday, April 1st and the concert on Saturday April 23rd. were discussed. The guest speaker at the next branch meeting on Thursday, March 10th. will be the past RBL National Chairman, John Farmer C.B.E, venue at present not confirmed, members will be notified. Michael Burton (Branch Chairman)
W.I. St Valentines day and red was the theme for the February meeting of the Stradbroke W.I. and my word everybody joined in with this most colourful and happy spectacle , laughing and chattering through the evening. Fifty shades of grey had nothing on us, we were fifty shades of red and loving it. Everybody wore something red from jewellery down to shoes, red hearts decorated the tables and the mood was lively from start to finish .Gill and Jane took us through the business section and welcomed the members and visitors to the evenings’ activities and was pleased to inform us that we have two new members who have just joined. The hostesses Rose and Prue were thanked for the birthday posies and table decoration, which of course were red roses, the posies being presented to new member Carrie Barnes and new committee member Patricia Woodward. Patricia was also our speaker for the evening showing us the basics of felt making using colourful wools, bubble wrap, a bamboo mat, some soapy water, not to mention plenty of elbow grease. Rose and Vera joined in the demonstration each making a colourful piece of felt and Patricia talked about the history and original uses of felt and, in good Blue Peter fashion, showed us some attractive pieces which she had made earlier. The vote of thanks was given by Jennifer Chetwynd, roundly supported by the audience, and refreshments followed, the Valentine theme continuing with the heart shaped cookies on offer. To make the evening perfect a third new member signed on the dotted line and joined our happy band, splendid. The evening closed and the scarlet plumed ladies of the W.I. fluttered away into the night like a chattering flock of exotic birds. Next meeting will be on March 10th when Mark Mitchel will talk about the Globe Theatre. All very welcome do come. Prue Rush
The Stradbroke Over 60s We held our first meeting of the year on 18 February. Everyone seemed very pleased to meet up again. They are all still talking about the entertainer that we had at our Christmas Party, who was really very good. We finished the meeting with a few games of bingo. Our next meetings will be on Thursdays, 3 and 17 March, 2pm to 4pm in the Community Centre where all will be made most welcome. On 3 March we are having a demonstration and tasters by Oakhouse Frozen Meals, who deliver in Stradbroke. Joan Grimes th

Stradbroke Archive and Records Association - SARA Congratulations to Stradbroke Swimming Pool on the 25th Anniversary of their March 1991 opening. Duncan Goodhew was there shortly after that day and had his photograph taken be a local newspaper to mark the event (pictured left). We have put that article on the archive website (www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk) along with a letter dated 6th March 1991 to Spencer Hawes in which Davis Langdon and Everest are thanking Mr Hawes for allowing a cup they wished to present, to be named after himself. We have also found a photograph of the ceremony marking the laying of the Swimming Pool foundation stone. Again, Congratulations! Over the last month we have received several phone calls and emails asking for information on JC Ryle who was the rector of Stradbroke between 1861 and 1880. As mentioned in a previous SARA article he went on to become the first Bishop of Liverpool and much respected. His teachings are followed even to this day. The increased interest is because this year marks 200 years since his birth on 10th May 1816 and in recognition there will be at least two new books published in celebration. Ann Readman SARA
Friends of All Saint’s Church Saturday, 30th April - The Annual Church Path Plant Sale - 10.00 am onwards. Please remember us when you are dividing plants - and pricking out seedlings. “Food with Friends for Funds” gives a good deal of fun and a regular income, but we need inspirational people to provide the “get up and go” to make All Saint’s Church the hub of the local community, in order to stand a chance in obtaining a National Heritage Lottery Grant for the major repairs required; it has been suggested we set up a Museum in the Church to the memory of J.C.Ryle; Rector 1861-1880 "The man of granite, with the heart of a child." A major restoration of All Saint’s took place while he was Rector, without his inspiration and dedication the Church building would not be here today. Margaret Streeter
Wingfield and District Gardening Club We visited an established garden first seen some five years ago and how it has progressed! The shrubs, beds and plants seem to be much improved. A pond has been dug out and you can actually see the water, but most of all the many trees that have been planted. The site covers about three acres and below the garden, behind the house, a positive forest has been planted with a delightful path leading one through them. So good for wildlife. The second garden was on the site of the old rectory in Stradbroke where the old walls have been retained and are in the process of being re-planted with climbers. Lovely raised beds for vegetables and the accompanying greenhouse were at the side, but most of the enormous long pond at the opposite side which has been cleared and is now ten feet deep in the centre. Daffodils were emerging at the edge and having removed the enormous leylandi which originally overshadowed it, a more controllable hedge planted. In due course it will be beautiful. On 31st March we meet in Brundish Village Hall to hear Matt Tatton Brown speak on pests and diseases. For further information contact Caroline on 01379 384674

Radio Stradbroke Radio Stradbroke is TEN years old at Easter, and they said it wouldn’t last! Your local Community internet radio station has existed for a decade without external funding, with no permanent home. In that time we have broadcast the following: Easter Music Marathons, Charity Music Days, Jazz Festivals, Stradisphere, Festifull, Cricket commentaries, a Talent Show, Parish Council Meetings, interviews, as well as many, many radio shows & “Live” studio sessions. Not bad! To celebrate, over the four days of Easter, the 7 regular DJs will pick their 10 favourite bands & singers, there will be a Round Table, discussing a song from each of the last 10 years, programmes chronicling the history of Radio Stradbroke, & memories of the 6 Music Marathons, as well as podcasts of some previous RS shows, running right through the weekend 24/7, well 24/4 anyway. We would love your memories of the last decade. Contact me, or email studio@radiostradbroke.co.uk . We are here to stay. March Sunday Sessions will feature DJ Huggy (6th), Richard Pierce (13th), & DJ Dave (20th). Log on to www.radiostradbroke.co.uk Michael Hugman
Stradbroke Cinema On Thursday, 3rd March, we are showing “The Martian”(12A) 7.00 for 7.30 pm. The Bar will be open and icecreams will be on sale in the interval. Entrance is £5.50. During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Director: Ridley Scott Writers: Drew Goddard (screenplay), Andy Weir (book) Stars: Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig. An enthralling and rigorously realistic outer-space survival story - and a must for fans of Bowie and disco music. Thursday, 17th. March “A Walk in the Woods” (15) After spending two decades in England, Bill Bryson returns to the U.S., where he decides the best way to connect with his homeland is to hike the Appalachian Trail with one of his oldest friends. Director: Ken Kwapis Writers: Michael Arndt (screenplay) (as Rick Kerb), Bill Holderman (screenplay) Stars: Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Emma Thompson The pleasure is in the sarcastic byplay between coarse, rascally Katz and drily witty, intellectual Bryson, with some musing on the environment, life, death and love. No jeopardy, no redemption, just a pleasant hike huffing and puffing through shared memories and the craving for a last adventure. This slight, lightly charming comic adventure is most obviously appealing for the "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" set though Bryson himself was in his forties when he made his journey. Thank you to Roger for organising the Valentines Party it was a great night, and the hall looked amazing. Also it was lovely to see 80 people at the showing of “Suffragette, great to see our centre being so well used and valued." Margaret Streeter

Open Gardens Flaunt your flowers for the hospice. Green-fingered supporters are needed to open their gardens to the public from May to September, in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice. By opening your garden for one morning or afternoon this summer you can make a difference and help St Elizabeth Hospice continue to improve life for more than 2,000 local people living with a progressive illness every year. St Elizabeth Hospice is looking for a wide variety of displays. So whether your garden is traditional or contemporary, tranquil or tropical, cosy or large, why not invite others to admire your horticultural skills whilst raising funds for your local hospice? You could even get the entire village involved. If you can’t commit to opening your garden, but would like to support the hospice with your horticultural skills then why not divide your perennials or sow extra seeds and donate the spare plants for us to sell on our pop-up plant stalls. Our lovely volunteers will replant your flowers into beautiful pots and sell them on stalls across the county. If you would like to open your garden this summer, or for more information on open gardens or pop-up plant stalls, please call 01473 723600 or email fundraising@stelizabethhospice.org.uk St Elizabeth Hospice is an independent charity which provides vital care and support free of charge to patients and their families across Suffolk. The hospice costs millions of pounds a year to run, and relies on fundraising events, donations and the income generated from its shops to meet the majority of these costs. Stradbroke Cricket Club That period after planning for the cricket season, & waiting for good enough weather to actually play, is upon us. As promised, the Club has entered a Sunday 20/20 League, playing home & away against Eye, Worlingworth, Saxmundham, & St.Margarets. It promises to be fun! Two indoor junior coaching sessions have been arranged at Stradbroke High School, on Tuesdays 22nd March & 12th April, from 6pm to 7:30. Cricket Force Day is Sunday 3rd April when we welcome as many volunteers as possible to help prepare the facilities in readiness for the season. One down side, due to the countrywide reduction in the numbers of people visiting Pubs, The Ivy House is unable to sponsor the Cricket Club in 2016. We thank them for their past support, & will still use the Ivy House for post-match drinks & Committee Meetings. Are there any local businesses out there who would consider sponsoring, in return for free publicity in all correspondence & media reporting, free advertising at the ground, & the sponsors name embroidered on Club clothing. Anyone wanting to be associated with the oldest Cricket Club in Suffolk, please contact me. Thank you. STOP PRESS! Thanks to everyone who attended our Pop Music Quiz. A record 20 tables made it a memorable evening. Almost £600 was raised for club funds, a spectacular effort! Michael Hugman

My Care At Home Loneliness is a massive issue for elderly people in the UK. As people grow older they will inevitably lose more of their friends, neighbours and even their spouse or partner. This reduces the social interaction that they might have. Also the elderly can have limited contact with family members due to them living away or having busy lives. All of these issues can lead to feelings of loneliness. Loneliness can then lead to a cycle of behaviour. As the elderly person feels more isolated they may become more withdrawn and spend even more time on their own which can lead to anxiety. This anxiety can then lead to more prolonged spells of time on their own and the vicious cycle has begun. Loneliness may not seem like a serious problem but the effects of the loneliness are. It can lead to serious depression and anxiety and can also lead to physical health problems. Prolonged loneliness can seriously affect a persons well being. This is why companionship is so important and can help to keep loneliness and its effects at bay. There are lots of ways we can help the elderly in our community helping them with shopping or taking meals round for them. However it's also important to spend the time with our elderly to help combat the loneliness and isolation they may be feeling. Stopping for a cup of tea and a chat, playing a game of cards, doing a jigsaw, going out for a walk, watching a movie together – all these activities allow an elderly person to enjoy themselves. Companionship can also be offered as a service by care companies. This isn't as a luxury but as vital aspect of someone's care to help keep those feelings of loneliness and isolation at bay. We all need to do everything we can to help the elderly in our community to feel more content and confident, and perhaps inspire them to do more things, and reduce any anxiety about the world outside their front door. Claire Bewley is a Director at My Care at Home based in Stowmarket. Tel: 01449 763086 www.mycare-athome.co.uk
Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund News ‘The King’ returns to boost charity coffers The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll will be leaving audiences all shook up when he takes to the stage next month to raise money towards a vital information and support centre. Elvis Presley, otherwise known as Simon Goldsmith, plans to hit all the right notes when he performs at Halesworth Golf Club, in Bramfield Road, on Saturday 26 March. All profits from the evening will be donated to Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund (HCNCF) and ploughed into the ongoing campaign to raise £714,000 for the centre, for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses in north east Suffolk and south Norfolk. It is the second time Elvis has performed at the club in aid of the charity. Ben Townsend, manager of Halesworth Golf Club, said: “We always try and support our local charities, and are delighted to be holding second Elvis night in aid of HCNCF. “ Our last concert was really well-supported and everyone had a fantastic time. We hope to replicate that success on March 26 and would encourage anyone who is a fan of the King to pick up their ticket and help make sure this charity event goes with a swing.” The ISC aims to bring a full range of holistic services closer to home for patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers. This includes benefits advice, wig-fitting, children and family support, complementary therapies, help understanding a diagnosis, counselling and bereavement support. The appeal has now raised more than 70% of its target, with the current total standing at more than £555,000. Ted Edwards, ISC chairman, said: “We are really grateful to everyone at Halesworth Golf Course – and to Elvis himself – for choosing to support our charity once more. We hope that as many people as possible come along on the night and enjoy excellent food, music and entertainment while helping raise funds for this vital local facility.” The concert runs from 7.30pm until midnight. Tickets are priced at £15 for members and £17.50 for non-members and include a finger buffet. They are available from the clubhouse bar, or by calling 01986 875567. For more information about the ISC project, or to make a donation, visit www.halesworthhealth.org/informationand-support-centre

We had a lovely quiz night and managed to raise over a £100 which will go towards keeping the site pest free. Many thanks for your support. We have just one whole plot left now which can be taken as a whole or as two halves. If you would like to grow your own produce without pesticides or herbicides please contact the club secretary, Helen 01379 388253. It is still looking bleak up on the site with not much growing apart from weeds. Although we still have sprouting broccoli, chard, leeks, kale and a few sprouts still producing. Chickens are happily doing their job of producing eggs and manure, and the worms are working the manure laid in autumn. Another couple of weeks and the site will come alive as plot holders return to prepare seed beds, sow seeds and start the eternal job of weeding. This year we will have the added bonus of a polytunnel for growing lots of lovely sweet tomatoes, peppers and anything else the plot holders can think of. We just have to put a door onto the structure and lay the membrane and we are there. Spring is just around the corner, promising longer days and stronger sun. You can't beat the feeling as you open that gate and walk to your plot, a little piece of heaven. Helen Pleasance
Suffolk Walking Festival 14th May - 5th June 2016 The 2016 Suffolk Walking Festival kicks off on Saturday, 14th May and continues for three weeks until Sunday, 5th June. The varied programme of 77 themed walks across the county range in length from a gentle stroll of one mile, to a challenging 60 miles in 24 hours and will take place along Suffolk's glorious coast, through scenic, gently undulating countryside and around our medieval towns and villages. The annual walking festival is a partnership project supported by all of Suffolk's local authorities and is spearheaded by the Discover Suffolk project at Suffolk County Council. This year's festival launch, which is sponsored by Suffolk Coastal District Council, takes place at RSPB Minsmere on the Suffolk coast. The event will also mark the launch of Suffolk's Year of Walking, which starts in May 2016 and ends in May 2017. There are three lots of challenge walks planned, which have been sponsored by the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Mega Challenge, for the ultra fit, is a walk which will be undertaken over a 24 hour period, covering 60 miles from Lowestoft to Felixstowe. The Classic Challenge, a firm favourite among regular festival goers, is made up of five walks of between 11 and 14 miles each. As with The Mega Challenge, the route goes from Lowestoft to Felixstowe, but will be at a rather more sedate pace and spread over five days. The Mini Challenge consists of three walks of around nine miles each: Oulton Broad to Beccles, the 'Trimley Loop' and a walk ending with refreshments at the National Trust's Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge. Other walks include two stress-relieving mindfulness walks; a 'prambling' walk for parents with prams; photography, birdwatching and Pilates walks; a gentle stroll for sufferers of dementia and their carers, a walk which includes views of early marsh orchids, a speed-dating ramble and the ever-popular 'Horrible History For Families' in Ipswich. Some include a cream tea or other refreshments and all are an informal and sociable way to explore the county, meet like-minded people and to indulge in a leisure activity which benefits both body and soul. To view the full walks programme and book tickets, visit the festival website www.suffolkwalkingfestival.co.uk Brochures will be available from Suffolk tourist information centres.

One of my major concerns for a long time has been the unreliability and slow speed of broadband services in Suffolk. Access to high speed broadband is an essential part of our lives in the 21st century and affects all aspects of it, from education and farming to wellbeing and health. Fast broadband should be a readily available facility in all our communities and should not create a ‘digital divide’ between those living in urban areas and those in rural villages, which is one of the many reasons I have been fighting for the swift rollout of superfast broadband since being elected as an MP in 2010. I continued that fight as I joined 120 cross-party Members of Parliament in signing a new report from the British Infrastructure Group of MPs (BIG), which highlights the fact that despite £1.7 billion of taxpayers’ money being pumped into subsidising the construction of UK high-speed broadband, there are still a staggering 5.7 million people across Britain, some of whom live in Suffolk, who are unable to access the internet at the Ofcom required 10 Megabits per second. Central Suffolk and North Ipswich falls into the bottom 20% of Parliamentary Constituencies for the number of connections with speeds slower than 10Mb/s. The situation is also bad for business, with 42 per cent of small and medium-sized enterprises reporting problems with their internet connection, at an estimated £11 billion cost to the British economy. I find this situation unacceptable and last summer I held a debate in Parliament on the issue of broadband in Suffolk where I highlighted the poor performance of BT to Ed Vaizey, the Minister for Culture and the Digital Economy. Despite the fact that the Better Broadband for Suffolk team and Suffolk County Council could exceed timescales and other contractual parameters and deliver faster, BT has at times impeded delivery and this has been to the detriment of Suffolk residents who have not received broadband in the timely manner they should expect. The Minister was grateful to me for raising the issue in Parliament and agreed to investigate the behaviour of BT in its delivery of superfast broadband to ensure that they help to accelerate the roll-out rather than act as a handbrake. The recently published report ‘BroadBad’ follows on from the issues I raised in my debate and calls on the regulator Ofcom to take radical action over the ‘natural monopoly’ too long enjoyed by BT Openreach. The report, which details connection speeds in every part of the country, argues that given our modern economy being so reliant on the internet, it is time to stop being held back by BT’s lack of ambition and underinvestment. Britain should be leading the world in digital innovation, yet instead we often suffer from having a BT run monopoly clinging to outdated copper technology with no proper long-term plan for the future. We need to start converting to a fully fibre network so we are not left behind the other nations who are rushing to embrace digital advancement. The Broadband Report makes the case that formal separation of BT from Openreach will bring fresh competition and a concerted ambition to deliver, which will create the broadband service that we all need in Suffolk and I have written to the Minister again to press for this.
