“I cannot let this month pass without paying tribute to Michael Ellis. Mike played for the club for many years, then, when it reformed, he took on the role of Chairman in 1986, a post he held until 2002. In that time he guided the club from its first sortie into League cricket, stabilised it, to such a degree that four successive promotions followed in the 90’s. He also oversaw the formation of the Junior Section, which has been the lifeblood of the Club, & without which there would be no Stradbroke Cricket Club, now. We owe him a great debt. Michael Hugman, Stradbroke Cricket Club” “It is with great sadness that the club has lost a good friend and fellow member with the passing of Michael. He was one of the stalwarts of our club not only with playing the game but also with its organization. We all extend our sincere sympathy to Mary and all the family. Roy Lee, Stradbroke & District Bowls Club” “On behalf of myself and family, I would like to thank everyone for their best wishes and cards, amounting to over 200. Stradbroke must be the most caring village in East Anglia. Thank you all so very much. Mary Ellis, David, Kevin, Micky and families.”

Stradbroke Community Centre

Are you interested in supporting “Village Life”? Do you have access to a phone and a computer? Could you spare a couple of hours each week? If the answer is yes to the above then read on! As the new Chairman of the Community Centre I am looking for someone to assist me with hall bookings and reservations. The role brings you into contact with a wide variety of organisations within the village and would give you a central and an invaluable role in the community. But don’t be frightened! The role is not an onerous task and can be done at your convenience and in the comfort of your own home. The only requirement is that you need access to a phone and a computer. All bookings are now registered on our webpage for all to see which saves an enormous amount of time and energy compared to the previous paper system. It also means the tasks can be done at a time of your own choosing. If you think you could help, or want more information then please contact me or any member of the Community Centre committee. Looking forward to hearing from you. Jane Merritt 01379 388382

CAMEO Lunch Club The word CAMEO is created from Come And Meet Each Other. Each month about thirty friends meet for a chat, good dinner, quiz and often a Christian message. In April we are expecting a visit from an East Anglian Air Ambulance representative who will tell us of the good work carried out by their helicopter. Like to come? We have room for more guests. Details and booking John 388751 SNOWDROPS - IT’S SPRING I recently visited a friend and commented on the array of lovely snowdrops snuggling against her front wall. Her response was; “I didn’t plant them, they were here when I moved in, I don’t do anything to them but they just appear like clockwork every spring”. Seeing the snowdrops reminds me of a poem learnt at school. Snowdrops by: L. Alma-Tadema Little ladies white and green. With your spears about you. Will you tell us where you’re been. Since we lived without you? The final verse asks. Little ladies white and green. Are you glad to cheer us? Hunger not for where you’re been. Stay till spring be near us. The emergence of snowdrops, primroses and aconites, together with the emerging daffodils and the excitement of our feathered friends all tell us that spring is fast approaching. The arrival of spring and the other seasons all remind us that irrespective of what is happening in other areas of our life, the natural world runs by it’s own timetable little influenced by human endeavour. The seasons remind us that we not control our universe. The Holy Bible tells us that creator God is in charge and has promised that while the earth remains there will always be a time for sowing and a time for reaping. We humans have the responsibility to care for the world God has placed us in and after our short stay to ensure that it is passed onto the next generation for their enjoyment. Dear Friends and Neighbours, After the short, often grey days of winter it is good to welcome March with is signs of hope and new life as first the snowdrops then the daffodils and other plants show us that spring is on the way. For me this spring with its promise of life takes on a deeper meaning. Last November I was diagnosed with breast cancer. With all the anxieties and uncertainties that it brings, after two operations and the threat of chemotherapy gone, after radiotherapy I can begin to get my life back on track. First of March is Ash Wednesday and here in Stradbroke church we will be having a special service of Communion with ‘ashing’ which marks the beginning of Lent. I like Lent, I am not one to give stuff up instead I try to give time to be still with God and ask myself, “am I different this year, have I grown closer to God, am I becoming more like Jesus”. Inevitably as I allow God to speak to me, I find that I need to make some adjustments to the way I am living. We all start with good intentions but can so easily allow ourselves to be drawn away from doing the things we know to be right, and finding ourselves getting a little too selfish, greedy or grumpy. I have been reminded once again by the cancer that life is precious and can be short, so we need to make the most of each day, trying to live well, being kind and generous to others, enjoying family and friends and trying to reign in selfishness and greed. A prayer for Lent: Lord may Lent be a time of inward searching that makes me more able to look with compassion at the needs of the world. Amen God bless, Revd Susan

Our February meeting took place on a cold and miserable evening, but that didn’t daunt the lively group that assembled in the Community Centre, the hall was positively buzzing. Once Gill gave her opening address, she welcomed Joy Ayres, who had joined the W.I. that evening. Warm welcomes were also extended to our visitors Vicki Batley, Abbie Clements and Linda Sedgewick. To support the National Federation’s ‘Show the Love’ on Valentine’s Day, hearts of green felt were given to members, and Gwyneth asked that they decorate them, and wear them on February 14th to show their support and bring awareness to climate change. Gill thanked Jane J. and Vera our hostesses for the evening, and thanked them for their lovely flowers, which were truly a touch of Spring. The birthday posies of golden tulips and freesias, were presented to Carrie, Lorraine and Yvonne. Members were informed that the Spring Federation Quiz was to be held here in Stradbroke on March 27th at 7.30pm. Volunteering to represent us in the quiz are Jennifer, Betty, June, Carol. Rose and Joyce still to be contacted. A new Kurling Group has now been formed and will play fortnightly, commencing on the 14th February. Something to really look forward to is the proposed visit to ‘The Suffolk Punch Trust’ in May. More information will be available at our next meeting. Gill then had the pleasure of welcoming our speaker for the evening David Ecclestone, who ironically had on this cold and bleak evening come to share his knowledge with us of ‘The Hudson River School of Art.’ A movement which was formed in America in 1825, by artists known for their paintings of landscapes and particularly of ‘Paintings of American Snow’. With such a cold subject, we might have expected to shiver, but David’s sheer enthusiasm, warmth and extensive knowledge of his subject ensured that we were absorbed and made to feel at times as if we were in the amazing snowy pictures that were portrayed on the screen. Annie gave a warm and appreciative vote of thanks on behalf of the members. After a break for refreshments Gill gave details of another ‘Silent Auction’ being planned for later in the year. This was followed by a reminder of our next meeting when we welcome Professor Valerie Pomeroy talking about ‘Stroke Recovery’. As Gill pointed out a stroke could affect anyone of us at any time, irrespective of age, so coming along to the meeting on March 9th at 7.30pm could be advantages to us all. As always visitors are very welcome. The meeting was then closed. A.Standin.

The Stradbroke Over 60s

Followed by our usual tea and biscuits then we finished with our raffle and auction Our next 2 meetings will be on the2nd. and 16th.of March. Hope to see you then Joan Grimes.

Stradbroke Primary School

On Thursday the children gave a wonderful Sign 2 Sing performance for their families. Sign2sing is a fun introduction to learning sign language and raises awareness of how important sign language is. The children learn the actions to accompany the words to songs incredibly quickly and gave a great performance. A big thank you to Stradbroke Exhibition fund which has provided funding to help us run school visits this year. Educational visits are vitally important to enhance the learning of pupils. In a time when transport costs are rising we always aim to subsidise these so that the full cost is not charged to parents. The children will be taking part in some valuable visits to enhance their learning before the end of term including a visit for Class One to Norwich Castle Museum, and theatre visits for Classes 2,3 and 4 to see “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Running Wild” by Michael Morpurgo. Once again we welcome new pupils to the school and we are preparing to welcome new Reception children for September. We have had several transition mornings and it is amazing how quickly the children settle. We have three more coming up before September- so if you are still considering which school to send your child to for their Reception Year from September 2017 please feel able to contact me. We are always happy to give parents a tour of our school and further information you may need. We have arrived at February half term already! Look out for more exciting news on our Easter events in the next edition. Melanie Barrow, Executive Headteacher 01379 384415

Stradbroke High School

I was thrilled to welcome our recent audiences for some fantastic evenings of entertainment in the school’s production of The Sound of Music at the end of February. The school, the performers and their families are incredibly proud of their achievements and will remember their involvement for many years to come. Alongside current students we welcomed back some past students to play in the pit orchestra. One of these is now at Framlingham College for sixth form study and the next step in his musical career will be at The Royal College of Music in London where he has been awarded a scholarship to study Composition. Our congratulations go to Jack Gionis for his successes so far, and our best wishes for even greater success. Dove House recently enjoyed a pizza party as a reward for having the highest tally of merits. It is always lovely to celebrate success and achievement by doing something a little different, and a good time was had by all. Year 9 are in the middle of the process of making curriculum choices for their GCSEs. We were delighted that so many of them, and their parents and carers, came along to our option evening and that they have taken the responsibility of making their choices very seriously. Year 10 are excited about arranging their work placements with local (and not so local) companies to whom we are grateful for their time and expertise. Meanwhile year 11 are creating revision timetables as their GCSE examinations draw nearer and our teachers have organised extracurricular support for them between now and the end of the spring term. The staff, parents and carers here at school have recently had the opportunity to speak to and ask questions of Jonathan Taylor of Sapientia Multi-Academy Trust. We are continuing to explore opportunities and our governors are carefully considering proposals to join the MAT. Meanwhile, the Business Association of Stradbroke High School (BASH), a group of committed local business people who support the school in terms of employability and readiness for work recently held a very productive breakfast meeting. New initiatives were launched to provide further support for the school and opportunities for local firms to enlighten students about the skills they need to be effective in the workplace. John Axtell, Head of School.

Wingfield & District Gardening Club

We visited two gardens in Worlingworth, having joined that villages gardening club for our winter visits. Both gardens had been much altered by their present owners. The first site had a very large pond, beds had been formed to make borders and beds, which provided lots of room for the many Hellebores, Euphorbia, Vinca and fern especially in dry places under trees. They had many raised beds for vegetables, a lovely wild flower meadow which was followed by a large orchard. The second had a large mound removed and a pond formed, with the spoil from the pond and he mound, a raised area was made which gave the garden a very pleasing feature. Both gardens confirmed the plants that grow well in this part of the world, with many little Cyclamen and Roses to come later in the year. Our next meeting at Brundish Village Hall is on March 30th at 7.30pm, whenTim Forrester will give a talk on the National Collection of Thalictrums. C Traylen

Never Forgotten One of Stradbroke’s photographers was a gentleman called Harry Webb. He was born in 1878 to Catherine and Benjamin Webb (village postmaster and schoolmaster). Harry had an older brother named John Charles Webb who met and married Lilla Stokes in 1894. Together they had three sons named Alfred, Guy and Benjamin jr. Sadly, John died in 1903 and by 1911 his young family had moved to Stradbroke to live at the post office in Queens Street with Benjamin Snr and Harry. Lilla’s son Alfred Webb is Remembered with Honour on the Stradbroke War Memorial having enlisted with 1st Battalion of the Kings Royal Rifle Corps and fought at the Somme. On 17th February 1917 Alfred was Killed in Action at just 19 years old. He is buried at Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt in France. Lilla requested the inscription ‘Never Forgotten’ be engraved on her son’s headstone. Our village memorial is quietly and beautifully cared for by Gordon Nunn. Stradbroke Sports & Community Centre cinema

On Thursday, March 16th we are showing 'A Streetcat named Bob' (12A) The film is a heart-warming tale of how James Bowen, a homeless busker in London struggling with addiction, finds an injured ginger cat seeking shelter like himself. The film follows the incredible true journey that both take along the road to recovery. It is guaranteed to make you think, laugh and shed a small tear as you urge both characters to succeed but you will go home with a rosy glow of satisfaction from the tale. On Thursday, March 30th we have a special showing of the BAFTA-winning Best British Film 'I, Daniel Blake' (15). This towering achievement from the director, Ken Loach, focuses on the plight of 2 ordinary people caught up in the downward spiral of our social services system. Since the early days of 'Cathy Come Home' Ken Loach has held up a mirror to our welfare systems provoking not just thought but many actions as well to help vulnerable people. This film is no exception. Yet while making a definite statement about the current austerity measures set by our government, the film also has enormous warmth and gentle humour. A 'must-see' film. Doors open at the Community Centre at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm showing. The bar will be open and ice-creams on sale in the interval. Entrance is £5.50 for adults and £3.00 for 16 year olds and under. Early warning: On April 20th we are showing 'A United Kingdom' Roger Turkington

Stradbroke: Portrait of a Suffolk Village

Stradbroke has been very fortunate indeed in having had its history recorded over a long period by some exceptional photographers and artists. Placed for safe-keeping in the Suffolk Record office by Geoffrey Smith, the original glass plates were rediscovered and digitalised in time for a great display in the church on Millennium Day, January 1st 2000. Since then many more old photographs have come to light and others have been specially taken over the last twenty years to record the changes steadily taking place year by year in the Village. This special talk was first prepared for an occasion in Ipswich where most of the audience did not know Stradbroke at all and had in fact probably never even been here. It may therefore be of particular interest to people who have recently come to live here and who would like to know more about the history of Stradbroke over the past 150 years. Of course, all those who have lived here for much of their lives and who have been to several of the earlier shows which I have given since the very first one soon after the Millennium Day itself are very welcome indeed. You may have seen many of the photographs before but simply linking them together with recent ones in a new way gives us all an important insight into our Stradbroke as it is today. Friday March 3rd at 7.30 in the Community Centre. Admission £3. Bar Open. (Proceeds towards the new Play Area) Gerald Jenkins

Saving All Saints

We held a very successful exhibition in the church on January 21st and thank you to everyone who came along. This included details of the proposed work on the church to make it safe and usable in a wider capacity with photographs illustrating the damage that penetrating water has done to the walls and windows. It also outlined the application for funding and the community project linked to it. The exhibition is still present but will shortly be replaced by a more permanent one so please feel free to drop into the church to view it. There is a full report with all the photographs and details on the village website www.stradbrokeonline.org .uk The application to the Heritage Lottery Fund was submitted by February 6th and we will now have to wait until June to hear if we are successful or not. Fingers crossed! Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley Project Co-ordinator

Stradbroke Tennis Club

The tennis season is nearly upon us, so the tennis courts have been cleaned and repainted whilst the clubhouse has also been painted and a new carpet laid on the floor. In April the club is launching a new junior tennis coaching programme to get young people involved in tennis, giving them an opportunity to make new friends, receive 1st class coaching and join a local club. Andrew Bedwell, a fully qualified Lawn Tennis Association Coach, will be providing the coaching. As well as liaising with local schools Andrew is keen to involve young people who live in the village in the programme. You can contact Andrew on 07725 851426 for further details, so please give him a ring. Kevin Holmes, Secretary Stradbroke Tennis Club.

Stradbroke Cricket Club

The problem with our Winter is that it comes, & goes, then comes back again, but the fact that the square has been cut for the first time, heralds Spring, a time of preparation, culminating on “Nat West Cricket Force Day” on Sunday 2nd April. As ever, we are looking for a few volunteers to paint, cut, roll, sweep, repair, erect nets, tidy, stock take, & generally feel like the cricket season is upon us. You will notice that no flyer has landed on your doormat. It is harder to put together than Article 50, nor have you had a fixture list, as I am still battling to arrange 20/20 matches, due to no fault of ours. What has arrived is our Insurance invoice, inflated, no doubt by Brexit! It means that supporting our HORSE RACE EVENING on SATURDAY 8th APRIL, is more important than ever, as this just about covers the bill. For £10 you get Fish & Chips, Race Card, free go on tricast race, & the knowledge that you are helping your village cricket club, as many did in our Annual Pop Music Quiz, last week.15 teams took part, an excellent turn out, and the Club is £400 better off because of it. Thank you to everyone who took part & helped. I cannot let this month pass without paying tribute to Michael Ellis. Michael Hugman

My Care at Home

Diabetes Type 2 – What are the risk factors? Type 2 diabetes presents itself when the insulin-producing cells in your body are unable to produce enough insulin or the insulin isn’t working properly. This then leads to a build-up of glucose in your blood and over time you will start to present with signs and symptoms of the condition. However, the signs may not be obvious, or you may not have any signs at all, which means it may take years to be diagnosed. Type 2 diabetes accounts for between 85% and 95% of all people with diabetes. It usually presents in people over 40 years old, but over recent years it is becoming more common in children and younger people. This type of diabetes is generally treated with a healthy diet and by increasing your physical activity. Sometimes, medication may be required in the form of a tablet and in some people insulin may be required. What are the risk factors? Age - If you are 40 years or older, or if you are African-Caribbean, Black African, or South Asian your risk increases over the age of 25 years. Ethnicity - Your risk also increases by 2 to 4 times in people of South Asian, African-Carribean or Black African descent. Weight - Being overweight increases your risk, especially if you are large around the middle. Waist size - Your waist measurement can put you at risk even if you have a normal BMI. Your risk is higher if your waist measurement is more than 80cm in women and more than 94cm in men. In South Asian men your risk increases if your waist measurement is more than 90cm. To measure your waist accurately, find the top of your hip bone and the bottom of your ribcage, measure around your middle at a point midway between these two points. For most of us this will be your tummy button. Family history - You are more likely to get Type 2 diabetes if you have a parent, sibling or child with diabetes. Other risk factors - If you have had polycystic ovaries, gestational diabetes or a new born baby weighting over 10 pounds. Your risk increases if you have had high blood pressure, a heart attack or stroke. Antipsychotic medication can also increase your risk, as can schizophrenia, bipolar illness and depression. If you would like to know more, or would like to complete the Diabetes UK risk calculator then please visit https://riskscore.diabetes.org.uk/start. Next month we are going to discuss what we can all do to reduce our risk of diabetes. Maggie Fisher is a Director at My Care at Home based in Stowmarket Tel: 01449 763086 www.mycare-athome.co.uk

Sorry for missing last month. Not a lot going on up the allotments at the moment. The soil has been too wet and claggy to do anything productive. February has been quite an exciting time. This is when all the planning for the new season tentatively starts. My potatoes are now nicely chitting on the windowsill in egg boxes, ready to go in at the end of March. Seeds are organised in the order they will be sown. A last minute look at what fertilisers go where and when and we are all set for the off. One thing I will hold off on doing is sowing my seeds too early. I sowed parsnip and beetroot too early last year and they failed to germinate due to cold weather. End of March before I attempt it this year. Raspberries (autumn fruiting) should be cut down in February, but if like me you have been unable to, do so as soon as you can. I always comment that I am behind. I always catch up. I would like to say that this year I am super organised, but alas a misstep outside my front door has led to a broken ankle which has curtailed me somewhat. I will no doubt be playing catch up again this year. We do have a whole plot and a generous 1/3 plot available now. The 1/3 plot comes with two espaliered apple trees which produced lovely apples last year. I am willing to halve the whole plot if necessary. Our AGM is in May. All roles are up for re-election. If you are interested in joining the committee contact me helenpleasance@talk21.com . The chair is standing down , and the secretary has decided that five years is plenty long enough for that role and wishes to sink her teeth into another role. No experience necessary, just lots of enthusiasm. We don’t meet very often, about six times a year and we always try to find a night when we are all available. We do a bit of fund raising and have an open day in the summer. Most of our meetings are about fund raising, site maintenance, any problems and a catch up with all that has gone on around the site since the last meeting. Please contact me for more information. Spring comes to the Heart of Suffolk

Despite a flurry of winter weather there are definite signs of spring across the Heart of Suffolk with the hint of some buds in the trees, birds busy in the hedgerows, and Snow Drops and Daffodils beginning to decorate the grass verges. Spring is certainly making its presence felt at the Mid-Suffolk Tourist Information Centre - situated at the Museum of East Anglian Life, in Stowmarket – where the team are busy preparing for this year’s influx of visitors and dealing with enquiries from people planning their visit to the area. Helping to promote the area is the new visitor guide for 2017 “Escape to the Heart of Suffolk”. Produced by Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils – and with a pastoral scene of rural Suffolk from an original painting by local artist Greta Hansen reproduced on the front cover – the guide is full of great ideas for things to see and do in the area including museums and galleries, farm and craft shops plus features on the Wool Towns, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, plus cycling and walking in the area. The Guide also features an excellent selection of accommodation for visitors - from hotels and Bed & Breakfast, to characterful Self Catering Cottages. The Guide is already out there promoting the Heart of Suffolk to potential visitors, having been distributed to Tourist Information Centres across the Country. You can pick up your own free copy from the Tourist Information Centre. And remember to check out www.heartofsuffolk.co.uk for up to date information on local attractions and events. If you haven’t been into the Tourist Information Centre lately then now is a good time to call in to see what the new season has in store. As well as free leaflets and brochures of things to do and places to visit - in Suffolk, East Anglia, and beyond – there is a great selection of unique, quality gifts (many produced locally) including chocolate, honey, cosmetics, and local interest books. Take advantage of a special offer and buy £10.00 worth or more of greeting cards (many with scenes by local artists) and receive 20% off. Finally! Remember that the Museum of East Anglian Life opens fully the last weekend in March. Until then you can still enjoy the grounds, Abbot’s Hall and, of course, the Osier Café! £25k boost for ISC project

Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund (HCNCF) has received a £25,000 boost towards its information and support centre (ISC) project from the organisers of a popular country fair. The charity has been given the donation by the Heveningham Hall Country Fair Trust, who pledged the money during HCNCF’s fundraising campaign and have released the funds now that it has reached its £710,000 target. The donation will help pay for construction work, which is due to begin later this year on land next to Cutlers Hill Surgery in Halesworth. Once building work is complete in 2018, the ISC will bring a full range of holistic services closer to home for patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers. This includes benefits advice, children and family support, complementary therapies, help understanding a diagnosis, counselling and bereavement support. It will be open to people from across south Norfolk and north east Suffolk who live within a 15-mile radius of Halesworth. Ted Edwards, ISC chairman, said: “As ever, we are incredibly grateful for the fantastic support we have received locally, and would like to pass our thanks to the Heveningham Hall Country Fair Trust for this generous donation. “Although we have met our £710,000 target to fund the construction, we are continuing to fundraise towards the running costs of the ISC and hope that people will continue to support us as we move into the next phase of this exciting project.” Anne Clark, of Heveningham Hall Country Fair, said: “The Trustees of Heveningham Hall Country Fair are pleased to continue supporting HCNCF with their ISC project.” For more information or to make a donation, visit www. halesworthhealth.org/information-and-support-centre Issued by Liz Hearnshaw at Zenith Public Relations on 01359 242581 or 07501 490308.

The Great Garden Trail

Green-fingered supporters are invited to open their gardens to the public as part of St Elizabeth Hospice’s brand new ‘Great Garden Trail’ this summer. The local charity is appealing for individuals or whole villages to open their gates and be part of the trail which will be taking place between May and September 2017. All the gardens will then appear on a unique trail map, alongside a short description with key details of the garden and opening days and times, so that supporters can follow the route and journey throughout the region, exploring the varied and beautiful gardens on display. By opening your garden for one morning or afternoon this summer you can make a difference and help St Elizabeth Hospice continue to improve life for local people living with an incurable illness. The charity is looking for a wide variety of displays; so whether your garden is traditional or contemporary, tranquil or tropical, cosy or large, why not invite others to admire your horticultural skills whilst raising funds for your local hospice? If you would like to open your garden this summer, or for more information on The Great Garden Trail please call 01473 723600 or email fundraising@stelizabethhospice.org.uk. St Elizabeth Hospice is an independent charity which provides vital care and support free of charge to patients and their families across east Suffolk. The hospice costs millions of pounds a year to run, and relies on fundraising events, donations and the income generated from its shops to meet the majority of these costs.
