RIDE! New bus service for Stradbroke?

“Suffolk County Council has since 2016, commissioned community transport operators on a District basis to provide services (that have to be prebooked) where there are no commercial services.

The digital service called RIDE enables you to book and pay on line and get instant confirmation and reminder messages. In the Stradbroke area (Mid Suffolk) the transport service is provided by BSEVC – The services are available for all age groups.

We are going to run a pilot in the Stradbroke area whereby we advertise RIDE and to begin with we want people to respond saying where they would like to travel and when, and then we will look at putting services for them and advertise it on the digital platform.

The pilot is going to run for 6 weeks from 12 February so we can test the digital solution thoroughly and see what the level of take up is although the intention is that the digital service will still be available after the 6 weeks.

We will be contacting the schools as all the drivers are CRB checked and it’s no different to riding on a commercial bus – its just a smaller bus, runs between 7 am and 7pm and has to be prebooked at least a day in advance. Its not a taxi so you would be expected to share and the range of routes may be limited but because people could say what they would like, the operator might be able to offer something if others also express interest.”

The daffs, primroses together with the bird song suggest that the weather is improving, it will soon be time to prepare for the coming season. Earlier this week whilst the sun was shining I decided to commence clearing an overgrown evergreen shrub. Having cut off the branches I began to clear the leaves and debris and to my great surprise discovered a hedgehog rolled tightly into a prickly ball. The hibernating creature seemed to be totally oblivious to the disturbance. I speedily covered the hedgehog with a good thick layer of leaves and secured these with a branch I had just cut off. Wishing my slumbering friend pleasant dreams I crept away hoping to see him later as he helps to control the slugs in the garden.

It is incredible the different ways nature deals with the winter’s cold, many plants and trees become dormant, various species of birds fly off to warmer places and some animals like my hedgehog take a long nap. Interestingly, however inactive the plants or creatures are, they are still alive just waiting to burst into new life, vigour and growth. We live in a wonderful universe created by our Heavenly Father, whatever the exploits of the natural world it cannot compare with the raising from death to new life - this was the experience of Jesus whose cruel death and marvellous resurrection we celebrate each Easter. For it is the raising to life of Jesus which gives us hope that we too can join in the great resurrection. For we are promised in the Bible that by putting our faith in Jesus we shall be raised to life eternal. This year on Palm Sunday we have a Special Service for “All the family” from 9:30am.

Easter Sunday is a joint service at All Saints Church at 11am. You are welcome to join us as we remember Jesus’ death and celebrate His raising to new life.

All Saints Church Fundraising Committee

First of all the committee sends all out good wishes to Julie Ward for her speedy recovery. We look forward to her coming back with us. We also welcome Sue Gray who has come onto the committee to help. Thank you, Sue. On 10 March we are having a cake stall in Church Street where Roly Copping will be selling his potatoes for the village show 8.30am onwards. Then on 17 & 18 March we are having the Book Sale again with stalls in the church, Sat 10-4, Sun 1-4. Please save your books, jigsaws, videos & CDs. I can collect if needed and if anyone would like to have a stall pease let me know ASAP. There will be a raffle and refreshments so come & browse.

This is to help raise much needed funds for the church. Our cake stall in Jan raised £86. Thanks to all who supported us.

Dear friends and neighbours The beginning of this year has been very much about celebrations in my family; a number of birthdays, my Mother’s 80th birthday and the birth of a new grandson. Lots of celebrations, with lots of preparations. It seems to me that celebrations and preparing for celebrations are very much a part of our culture.

Preparation and celebration are also very much a part of the church’s calendar. Just as Advent prepares us for Christmas so the period of Lent prepares us as we head towards Easter. God has taught me that Preparation is important in all kinds of areas of life and it’s important for us as people too; it’s good for us. It helps us to focus on our priorities and what’s important.

It seems to me that fewer people celebrate Easter these days, and I wonder if that’s because we don’t allow time to prepare for it. As a Christian, I’d have to say that Easter is as important as Christmas. At Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus but at Easter we celebrate his resurrection; his rising from the dead, his victory over death and it’s because of his resurrection that we have a hope and promise of eternal life.

If you would like to experience Easter differently this year... if you would like to experience more of what Easter means and perhaps experience some of the joy of Easter, then perhaps you might like to take a little time to prepare for it. You might like to read and think through Mark’s gospel chapters 14, 15 and 16 in the Bible. Or why not join us at any of our services on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday or Easter Sunday; details above. We would love to see you.

The working party will make amendments to the plan if necessary for final sign off by the Parish Council in March. th

LIFE IN THE LEGION – R.B.L. Stradbroke Branch

Branch member, Simon Harrison, the head of Harrison Edge, the Estate Agents in Eye, was the speaker at the midday monthly meeting of the branch held at Laxfield, Royal Oak. He brought along old land maps and sale copies of local estates; which was of interest to the fifteen members and guests present. On their behalf Branch Chairman, Michael Burton, who presided gave him the usual vote of thanks.

During the business part of the meeting reports were given by the Officers present. Branch Secretary Bernard Mills gave a full report on the recent Suffolk County Royal British Legions annual conference held at Needham Market Community Centre. The Spring Lunch, replacing the Annual Branch Dinner, was discussed to which all members will have a letter about in the near future. The next meeting of the branch is on Thursday March 8th to be held at our usual venue Laxfield Royal Oak starting at 11.30 am when the guest speaker will be Joe Sigers from Belgium with the 9th. Bomber Group from Horham invited to attend.

The Stradbroke WI February meeting. We were delighted that a good number of our members braved the dreadful weather to turn out for our February meeting; the hall looked quite cheerfully full, although some members didn't feel brave enough to remove coats! We were very pleased to welcome a new member, Linda Webb, and hope that she will enjoy being part of our group.

Gill and Jane dealt with the correspondence and information, birthday posies were given out and hostesses thanked. Jane brought our attention to the report of last year’s Suffolk Show in the SEFWI magazine, which mentioned our WI’s scarecrow of Donald Trump, who even the youngest children seemed to recognise. Many of them queued to have their photograph taken with him.

Gill read a letter of thanks from Nick and Suzanne Stones, who said how much they had appreciated the refreshments that our members provided after the funeral of Mary Stones. They also very kindly made a donation to our WI funds.

Our speaker/singer for the evening, Sharron Jarvis, was then introduced. Sharron is a singing teacher and a voice facilitator; the title of her presentation was “Singing for Health”. Sharron began by mentioning studies carried out in Quebec and Helsinki, where singing was introduced to groups of people with dementia and cancer respectively.

In both cases, it was shown that singing had a positive effect on the mental and physical health on those to whom it was offered. Sharron explained that one should sing to feel better, without worrying about how it sounds. Some of our members, who obviously consider themselves unable to sing, doubted the wisdom of this… She went on to say that there are three ways of learning; visually, audibly and kinaesthetically. Because of this, people with dementia can remember words when singing, when they would be unable to do so when talking. She told us that her fees for the evening would go to the Castlegate Group in Colchester, a group of adults with severe learning difficulties.

Their concerts have been attended by many well known people, such as Terry Waite.

Then, it was our turn. Sharron handed out words to “Mollie Malone”, and off we went. Most of us seemed to know the tune, which helped, and thus encouraged, we went on to sing “By the Light of the silvery Moon”; fine, but this time, we were divided into two groups each singing different parts of the song. We obviously impressed, because we were then singing two different songs at the same time; Israeli chants, which consisted of Tumbas and Badas, followed by Micheal Finnagen” and “This old Man”. These were sung as rounds, gathering speed as they went. I’m sure our lungs were feeling well and truly exercised by this time. To calm things we were handed the words to “Que Sera”. Poor Dorothy has very negative feelings associated with this, although she couldn’t quite remember why, so we quickly moved on, finishing with “Over the Rainbow”, which I think sounded quite beautiful!

The vote of thanks was given by Carrie, who declared that the evening had been excellent and that the exercise had definitely helped with her cough. Our next meeting will be a talk on March 8th, given by Ruth Miller, entitled “Foundlings”.

Stradbroke Allotments & Gardening Association

March is the month when we welcome the most fascinating season of the year—Spring. I remember my grandfather saying that March dust was worth a pound a peck, by which he meant that once you see dust blowing off the path you know the surface of the soil is beginning to dry. This is a busy month when seed sowing and planting can begin in the vegetable and flower garden, but you have to be guided by the weather and condition of the soil. It is a waste of seeds to sow them before the soil has warmed up sufficiently. Once your plots have been raked to a reasonable fine tilth throw general ferterliser on them and lightly rake it in. I use National Growmore. Sulphate of potash is good for fruit and flowers. First Early Potatoes bought in January for chitting should be ready for planting this month. Dig a trench 15cm deep and lay the potatoes in it 30cm apart and 60cm between rows, cover the potatoes then draw the soil up over each row to form a ridge. Cabbage, cauliflower and Brussel Sprouts can be sown in a seed bed, but if you have a propagator at home or a cold frame sow them in seed trays or cell trays so that you can plant them out when the weather is suitable. When planting Brassicas it is important not to disturb their roots too much as if this happens they can bolt or go to seed. This applies to most young plants in the allotment and garden so I hope you all have a good growing season up at the allotments.

The Stradbroke Village Archive The strange case of the Stradbroke sheep…

On July. 22nd 1906 Stradbroke farmer Robert Hawes awoke to find that half of his flock of sheep were strangely wrong – not his sheep.

In his opinion 49 of his sheep had been taken and the same number of an inferior quality substituted. He contacted Police Sgt. Leftley who began to make enquiries. This in turn led to the discovery of the abducted sheep at the premises of farmer Frederick Cook of Fressingfield. Court action followed. The accused were Frederick Cook and labourer James Rumsby who both pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case began in August and was eventually settled in November. It was all about timings and recognition – that’s recognition of the sheep and to that end it was necessary to bring the sheep into the court room for witnesses to prove that they could tell the sheep apart. On 2nd November the Jury took just ten minutes to find both the accused guilty as charged.

The judge in passing judgement said ‘Frederick Cook and James Rumsby you have been found guilty upon evidence that convinced the jury and must have convinced every thinking man in this place of having stolen these sheep. An attempt has been made to cast odium upon respectable people who have given evidence in this case. But it would be impossible for a judge to get over their evidence. That any reasonable man to come to any other conclusion than that Rumsby was there upon the occasion that he was there for the purpose of bringing these sheep away . . . and the inference is that he had exchanged the sheep. There is no doubt about that. It is a serious matter for both of the prisoners. I know exactly what has taken place in regard to Cook before but I don’t want to go into that. It is impossible for me to pass lightly over such an offence. Property of this kind is very unprotected and easily dealt with by persons of your position.’ Cook received a year in prison with hard labour and Rumsby the same but for 9 months.

Frederick Cook maintained his plea of innocence as he left the court and Farmer Hawes was granted the return of his sheep. However throughout the three months of court action, which included a hung jury and witness intimidation, the physical evidence – the sheep – were kept by the court with an order that they should not be washed in case crucial markings would be removed.

Stradbroke Library, Post Office and Court House News

Stamps will be going up by 2p each on 26th March 2018. First class will be 67p each and second class 58p each. First class large letters will be £1.01 and second class large letters will be 79p. All letter and parcel mail is going up but you can make significant savings by stocking up on books and sheets of stamps before the price rise. We have books of 6/12/100 stamps in stock.

On Friday 20th April 2018, we are launching our ‘FRIDAY FRIENDS CAFE’ at the Courthouse from 10 am to 12pm. This is a café session for people affected by dementia in any way, carers and those that are cared for, as well as friends, family etc. At this launch session there will be free refreshments for everyone as well as support and advice for those that need it. Come along and meet up with others in a relaxed, supportive, informal, social setting.

We intend to run these café sessions on the first Friday in the month after the launch. The next one will be on Friday 4th May where normal Courthouse café prices will apply : £1.50 for coffee/tea/hot chocolate and £1 each for a sausage roll/toasted teacake or a slice of delicious homemade cake. Wingfield and District Gardening Club

We saw two beautiful but very different ‘Gardens in Winter’ in January. The first was transformed from a working farmyard and had a large moat surrounding the garden, new beds had been cut in the concrete and planted with shrubs. Enchanting beds up to the door with roses and shrubs and really good beds for the vegetables at the rear of the house. Interestingly the soil for these had not been imported but had previously been well worked in the past, resulting in fabulous loam in which to grow vegetables.

The second has also been transformed in recent years with an elegant arrangement of beds at the side of the house with a central box, paths and four beds surrounding it, containing shrubs, roses and bulbs just breaking the surface.

A hazelnut path has been planted and traditional box hedges edge the back garden. An orchard has been established to the front with several different apples and one or two building made to accommodate tols, etc. both gardens had delightful wooden greenhouses sheltering render plants. We meet again on 22nd March for a talk by Matt Tanton Brown on ‘low maintenance plants’ at 7.30pm in Brundish Village Hall.

Parish Council Notes From the Chair...

I would like to welcome Kamal Ivory to the Parish Council, Kamal was co-opted at our January meeting. Sadly, we said goodbye to Nick Stones and Michael Hugman who have decided to leave the Parish Council at this time – both will be missed. Councillors are hoping to co-opt to fill the vacancies at the March meeting, we already have 3 applications so it is good to see that the Council will be able to continue to work for the village with a full council, if anyone else is interested in putting themselves forward, please contact the Clerk.

I wrote a statement for the beginning of our February meeting. I felt I needed to set out that there have been no official complaints made against any present or former councillors.

I also thought it was important to remind the meeting that the public forum is an opportunity for the community to bring to the Parish Council’s attention information on items on the agenda, it is not a forum to make personal attacks on Councillors or Parish Council staff.

The neighbourhood plan working party are working through comments received on the draft plan. Please use the opportunity to comment as soon as you can so that we can move the plan forward to the next stage as quickly as possible.

Alfie is very modest about his ancestry and never mentions former achievements by close relations. The reason for his reluctance to follow current trends and audition for TV talent shows is simply that Alfie is happy to be a Labrador. Nothing more. And it has to be said that he maintains this role with dignity and distinction. Charles Garland writes whimsical verse, plays, music and trivial comedy lines. The Red Feather Club in Horham has a packed calendar of events planned for 2018 with dances, open days and a quiz.

The first big event of the year is on Saturday 24th March with a 1940s Swing Dance with The Pat Reyford Combo! On March 15th we will be showing ’Victoria and Abdul’. The extraordinary true story of an unlikely friendship formed in the last years of Queen Victoria’s reign between the queen and a young Indian clerk. Judi Dench triumphs again as the elderly monarch and she relishes the witty and absorbing screenplay. The film is hugely entertaining but also thought-provoking as it deals with many themes such as loyalty to family and country, friendship and duty. Eddie Izzard stars as the Prince of Wales in a surprising portrayal but one that is very effective.

Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30pm. The bar is open before the start and during the interval when ice creams will also be on sale. Family Fun Quiz for Easter

The Community Centre is organising a family fun quiz on Friday 6th April at 7:30 in the community centre. It will be an Easter based themed quiz for all the family. Teams of up to 6 will be permitted but they must include 2 children under the age of 16. The quiz will cover a variety of genre and include some questions specifically for the young persons in the team. The evening will include a raffle and the bar will be open as per usual. Points of View photography exhibition in Cratfield

Points of View is a photography exhibition created by Chrissie Kitchen, Candy Blackham, Nick Eade, and Geoff Moore who live in Cratfield and who all enjoy the visual arts.

Chrissie remembers the fascination of her father's dark room and his collection of cameras. 'I remember the intrigue of family group lineups. We stood still while he would twist dials, run to the group, say cheese, and then wait - if you moved the whole photo went out of focus! Many moons on I take my digital camera, look around - point, click, done - a great pastime which I enjoy immensely.'

In childhood art classes and books on artists were important to Candy and it was a great privilege to visit the great art galleries of Europe later in life. Photography became important three years ago and now she is working hard at the challenges of Photoshop and the Camera Club! Current projects are Canary Wharf in London, Parish Churches, and plants and gardens.

Geoff picked up his camera a few years ago, having previously enjoyed making videos. These days he records his travels in Africa where he loves seeing animals in their natural environment, and the countryside in Suffolk. The trees and the brilliance of the colours in sunsets have a particular fascination for Geoff but he also enjoys those little quirky details which we all love to find!

It was his membership of the International Ranger Federation and its work in protecting and conserving wildlife and the environment which prompted Nick to pick up a camera. Now, both in Suffolk and abroad, he challenges himself to 'catch the moment' in a single shot.

Stradbroke Cricket Club

As well as being the shortest month, February is the quietest month for the Cricket Club. New Committee in place, League fixtures sorted, inertia. Too cold/wet/frosty to cut the grass, schools on half-term, awaiting one item of correspondence to launch 'All Stars Cricket', players no idea of availability this early in the year. March is going to be a busy month! Thankfully, one event passed off in February, the Annual Pop Music Quiz. A near record 20 tables took part, the 'Bacton Tea Party' retaining their title. What was striking was the age range, from youngsters whose music collection fits into something the size of my toothbrush, up to wily veterans who think the a CD is state of the art. But both enjoyed their night, which warms the cockles that they continue to support the Cricket Club. Double cockle warming came in the shape of the staggering £600 profit made on the night, meaning that a well attended Horse Race Evening on Saturday 14th April, will cover our expenses for another twelve months. We also hope to unveil a new sponsor very soon, & new playing shirts & clothing, commemorating the 275 years cricket has been played in Stradbroke.

Naturally, we want the Village to be part of this celebration. Watch this space! A few volunteers on the morning of Sunday 25th March would be welcome. It is NAT WEST CRICKET FORCE DAY, when we paint, clean, put up nets, cut & roll grass, tidy the equipment, & eat bacon rolls, all in the name of preparation for the new season, a season that promises so much, & may turn round our fortunes. Hayleys Hill. Running club members ventured out in the Snow in December, to unveil a plaque in memory of Hayley Adams. The hill, now dubbed 'Hayleys Hill' is situated on the footpath just past Valley Farm. This seemed a fitting tribute, as Hayley would often encourage runners on this hill as part of their run sessions. Thank you to Stuart & Jane Gemmill for allowing us to place this on their land!

Hello to you all. As indicated in the previous edition of the magazine the outdoor bowls is in the closed season until the green opening on Saturday 21 April at 2.00 pm however there are some social events to remind you about and we hope that you may be able to attend, and they are as follows.

White Hart Bowls Club

A trip to Potters was enjoyed by 20 of our club members. Sunday on arrival we enjoyed Tea coffee & biscuits before starting the 1st of 4 games of bowls. We all enjoyed the evening meal, before dancing the night away to some great live music. After breakfast the next morning the last 2 games were played, scores were added up. In 3rd place Malcolm Paris Oakes. 2nd place Alan Hutchinson. Roger Ward 1st for the 2nd year running the cup was presented to Roger by Greg Harlow. Calendar Launched in Aid of Deafness Charity

The winners of a local photography competition, raising awareness about untreated hearing loss, have been rewarded with their photos being featured in 2018 charity calendar. The ‘Sounds of Suffolk’ competition was created by family run hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre, who have a local clinic within the Eye Health Centre on Castleton Way. The competition has helped encourage those struggling with hearing loss to seek help, as well as highlighting some of the incredible sounds that can be found in and around our county. During a prize giving presentation, the calendar was officially unveiled, along with a series of greeting cards which are both to be sold in the run up to Christmas. Competition winner James Stannard and second place runner up Stephen Squirrell attended the presentation, along with Brian Platt and his hearing dog Elton.

Midnight Walk 2018 12/05/2018 - 13/05/2018 20:00—Trinity Park, Ipswich IP3 8UH St Elizabeth Hospice's flagship event, The Midnight Walk, is back for it's twelfth year and this year is going to be even bigger and better than any before it.

In recent years you've shown up in your thousands, dressed brightly and brought the fun along for the night with you. In the process, you've managed to raise around £200,000 for the charity each time.

This year, dress up in your finest neon and sparkle and join thousands of others as they pound the pavements of Ipswich to raise money for the hospice. So go and dig out your leg warmers, dust off your tiaras, gather the troops and join the biggest party in town!

Starting from a new location, Trinity Park will play host to a build up of live entertainment before the walk begins. This time, walkers can choose whether they complete the six or ten mile route with both stopping at the hospice for a moment of peaceful reflection and the opportunity to place a message on the memory tree.

We are proud and privileged to stand beside those who are looking death in the eye, and, when we do, something amazing happen; life flourishes. Join us for our 2018 Midnight Walk because we don't let death kill life.

We couldn't hold an event as large as the Midnight Walk without the help of hundreds of wonderful volunteers. This year, there are a variety of roles available including volunteer marshals to ensure everyone enjoys a safe event. Giving a helping hand to local pet-food business A Stradbroke based pet-food company has successfully forged a new market in Bahrain, with help from Dr Poulter.

Skinner's Pet Food is a premium dog food manufacturer employing over 60 people and now providing fourteen dried dog foods, exporting to Europe, Russia, Romania and beyond. To that list can now be added Bahrain, although the process wasn't an easy one.

Initially told, incorrectly, that no export requirements were in place for Bahrain, Skinner's therefore dispatched the order of dried dog food to Bahrain, incurring charges, as no Export Health Certificate accompanied the goods.

Skinners then contacted Dr Dan Poulter to ask for his assistance.

Dr Poulter made representations to DEFRA and APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency). Following this, APHA created a new EHC Certificate relevant, allowing Skinner's to ship to Bahrain.

Roger Skinner wrote to thank Dr Poulter for his intervention and they have now received their first order from Bahrain.

Scott Dealy has contact the Stradbroke Villiage Website Facebook page to try and find out more about his ancestors. Scott is descended from his 5x Great Grandmother Mary Ann Stevenson who lived in Stradbroke and wishes to find out more about the village that she lived in, aswell as if there are still any Stevensons still in the area!

Scott is a teacher who lives in Australia, North of Melbourne, and is putting together a magazine for the younger members of his family to try and help them connect with their family history and understand more about where they originate from. To that end Scott would be very, very happy if anyone in Stradbroke today would like to answer a few questions for him to put in their Family History project— Those questions are: 1.
