STRADBROKE NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN YOUR VILLAGE NEEDS YOU

The Neighbourhood Plan is a once-only chance for us to give our opinions about how we, the people who live here, want the village to develop in the future. The plan that comes out of your responses in the questionnaire will be a legal document so we do need as many of us as possible to complete it so that we have a full and fair reflection of your thoughts. By now you will have received your Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire and, maybe, even completed it. It can be filled in either on-line very simply or on the paper copy which can then be returned to the collection box in the library. If you have any questions about the Neighbourhood Plan or the questionnaire or would like some help with it, there will be a helpdesk outside Spar on Saturday, April 30th and a helpdesk in the Courthouse cafĂŠ on Thursday, April 28th and Saturday, April 30th. Remember that the questionnaire is the opportunity for you to give your opinion about many aspects of Stradbroke and help shape the future of the village so please spare 15-20 minutes completing it. Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley, Chair of the Neighbourhood Planning Committee SPEAK OUT FOR STRADBROKE!

Yesterday and Today Two hundred years ago the Baptist Church was founded in Stradbroke. Much has been written about the early Baptists and their struggle to worship God in the way they thought appropriate. The history of Stradbroke gives us little detail of the social unrest and conditions at that time. Our ancestors accepted their lowly position in life but were very concerned about having the freedom to worship God and serving the local people. These twin aspirations of worship and service has been the motivation down the ages and is still our ambition today, as we attempt to balance the twin ideas of “Worshipping our Creator God, and serving Him”, as we contribute to society both locally and further afield. We invite anyone who might like to share this vision to come and join us, all events are open to everyone.. Our worship centres on the Sunday morning service as we praise God by singing (songs old &new), praying and listening to a Christian message. The service which lasts for one hour is followed by refreshments each week. Bi monthly we join together and share with friends from All Saints for a “Churches Together” morning service. Each month a small group meet to pray together, and fortnightly we meet for study. The present format is; a cuppa & chocolate teacake, watch DVD followed by open and sometimes lively discussion. Recent topics include. “How to find happiness”, “How to understand the Old Testament” and “How to respond to divorce”. Lunch club and coffee morning. These are great places to meet new friends, chat, and enjoy good food. Transport can be provided just call. A recent addition is a monthly “Create & Chatter” – all ages get together to have a go at various crafts or just bring along their own knitting, enjoy a coffee and chat. Overseas. We support a number of Christian charities by our prayers, efforts, and gifts. Two organizations which are helped in very practical ways are TWAM & Hope Now. The following is Jackie’s latest comments on the position at Hope Now. Thank you! All the goods generously donated are being sent to Ukraine. Hope Now continues to help many orphans, widows and displaced refugees from the war in the north. A new youth worker has taken on the challenge of encouraging young people to get involved in the work. At Stradbroke we are twinned with a church in Borovista who are supporting 300 homeless people and run children’s clubs in the summer. I will be going to Ukraine in September, and I am now collecting linen or anything that can be used for embroidery including table cloths. These items will be used in the camps run by Hope Now for single people. I look forward to taking your donations with me in September, thanks. Please contact: John Ling 388751 (Church Elder) Jackie Hughes 384112 (Church Administrator)

All Saints – A message from Rev. Cathy Bladen Dear friends & neighbours, I can’t believe I’ve been here for almost a year now. I was ordained as a Deacon last July and will be Priested at the end of June and the time has just flown by. I’m gradually getting to know people across the Sancroft Benefice and am really enjoying all there is to learn about being a priest in a rural ministry. One of the reasons I believe God called me into this work is my love for people and my enjoyment of getting to know folk and building relationships. As a result of discussion with the Revd Susan Loxton , the Church Wardens and people from All Saints, are starting a monthly drop in morning which we are calling Tea & Toast. It’s going to be on the 2nd Tuesday each month, 9.15-10.30am at the Community Centre for anyone who would like to chat over a cup of tea or coffee and some toast. Everyone is very welcome. We will have a box of toys available so any little ones will be welcome too. I look forward to meeting and getting to know more of you there.

9.15 -10.30am Stradbroke Community Centre Every 2nd Tuesday of the month Starting Tuesday 14th June

God Bless, Revd Cathy Bladen

Life in the Legion—The Royal British Legion (Stradbroke and District Branch) “Life in the Legion”. From The Chairman’s Desk. Over 60 members and guests, who came from a wide area, attended our Annual Branch Dinner held at The Community Centre. The dinner, a super meal supplied by Bakewell Catering, was the 30th since the branch was reformed. The guest speaker was Judith Shallow, the then High Sheriff of Suffolk, who is from Felsham (near Bury St.Edmunds). She proposed the Legion Toast; the reply was given by Colin Chambers, the new Norfolk County RBL Vice Chairman from North Walsham. Our member Rosemary Warne, MBE, DL, proposed the toast to our guests, with the reply given by Ken Rowbottom the Suffolk County RBL Vice Chairman from Fressingfield. I acted as toastmaster and gave the Legion Tribute, and grace was said by the new branch chaplain, the Revd. Ron Orams. Presentations were made by Judith Shallow; The Ken Richardson memorial shield was awarded to Rosemary Warne, the Tommy Campbell Preston Tankard to Penny Stanford, the Simon Crowe Tankard to Karen Sands and wine to Joyce Baker. John Graham, the branch Vice Chairman, ran a draw and over £200 was raised for branch funds. Brigadier Alasdair Wilson OBE from Dickleburgh was the guest speaker at the April month meeting of the branch held at our new venue, the Laxfield Royal Oak. His subject, “The Order of Saint John”, was of great interest to the sixteen members and guests present including our oldest member Douglas Crooks who is 95. One of the branches youngest members, Geoffrey Lilley, gave the vote of thanks. During the business part of the meeting the annual dinner was discussed and I thanked all who had helped to organise it. The next meeting will be held at the Laxfield Royal Oak on Thursday, May 12th. starting at 11.30 am. A guest speaker is being arranged. Michael Burton (Branch Chairman)

W.I. It was a very wet day on Thursday 14 April, with continual rain, hail, thunder and lightning, and the wet theme continued into the evening, as the topic for our speaker was sailing! Our president Gill Bird got the evenings proceedings underway, and was delighted to welcome Roz Adcock as our newest member. Iris and Vivienne were thanked for being our hostesses for the evening, and for making the birthday buttonholes for Gwyneth, Jane J. Sue P. and Caroline. Members once again showed their generosity with their support for the Food Bank collection, and were warmly thanked by Gill. To celebrate H.M. the Queen’s 90th Birthday the W.I. will be joining in the village celebrations by helping with the flower festival in the church in June. Then it was back to the water again as Gill welcomed John Wilkinson from the’ Woolverstone Project’ an organisation which helps those with disabilities realise their dream, and learn to sail. With the aid of a computer John showed slides of the various vessels they use for training, and explained the technical details and the safety measures required. The sport was found to give amazing confidence and freedom to the new sailors with many being reluctant to come off the water when their lesson was over. The Woolverstone Project has clearly opened up a whole new world for them, and Annie gave a heartfelt vote of thanks to John on our behalf. After refreshments Gill proposed that we restart the Kurling Group again, and members readily agreed. A beautiful basket of flowers arranged by Dianne, to celebrate Joyce and Roy Lee’s Diamond Wedding Anniversary was shown to members and delivered the following morning, as Joyce was unable to be at the meeting. After reminders of the ‘Silent Auction’ next month Gill closed the meeting, and the rain was still coming down... Gill Bird

These meetings are 2pm-4pm at the Community Centre. On Thursday 26th May we have arranged a trip to Yoxford Antiques Centre. Our Cubs recently visited the Stradbroke Fire Station and had a great time – learning about fire safety . Thanks to the Officers and crew at Stradbroke Fire Station. 1st Fressingfield Beaver Colony joined others from across the District for an emergency services day. Our members learnt about home safety, Group Camp 27-29 May 2016 will be at the Hallowtree Scout centre, Nacton near Ipswich. Bookings now being taken and we are filling up fast. FRAPLE 2016: As part of our commitment to investing in and empowering our leaders of the future, creating engaged citizens and to the YOU-shaped agenda – we held our first Fressingfield Residential Assistant & Patrol Leader Experience (FRAPLE). Our scouts gathered at the Thornham Walks residential centre and spent a weekend looking at leadership skills, community engagement and programme planning for their patrols and Troops. We are looking for additional adults to volunteer to support our Group as leaders. All sections – Beavers, Cubs, Adventurers, Pioneers and Explorers are full and operating waiting lists for new members. 1st Fressingfield Scout Group is now the owner of a replacement minibus thanks to the contributions of various Parish Councils, Cllr McGregor and Cllr Hadingham, donations from other local organisations and efforts of the Scout Group at the sponsored swim events. Stradbroke Primary School Junior Road Safety Officers We are Toby and Phoebe from Stradbroke Primary School. We are Year 5 pupils and have been working this year as Junior Road Safety Officers. We have organised lots of events and competitions in school to make our children aware of the importance of road safety. We have taught the children to Be Bright Be Seen and helped them learn to cross the road safely. We wanted to write this article to get a message out to the wider community to make sure everyone stays safe. It is really important to drive safely in our village and always think about pedestrians and cyclists, especially near to the school. Please stick to the speed limits, always wear your seatbelt and never use your mobile phone whilst driving! Thank you, Stradbroke Primary School’s Junior Road Safety Officers

Stradbroke Archive and Records Association - SARA During the First World War Stradbroke lost 17 young men in battle. In 1922 a memorial was built on the corner of Church Street and Queen Street to honour them and acknowledge their sacrifice. Pte. Arthur Norman was the third of these men to lose his life 100 years ago. Pte Arthur Norman, 1882 — 1916 Arthur Norman was born in 1882, one of 7 children of Robert and Mary Ann Norman. The family lived in New Street and then Mayhews Corner. In 1910 he married Kate Larter and together they had three children —Arthur Jnr.(1911), Edith (1913) and William (1915). When Arthur filled in the 1911 census return as head of his family, he described himself as a farm labourer, the same employment as his father before him. During WW1 Arthur enlisted into the 2nd Battalion of the Norfolk Regiment and fought in Iraq as part of the Mesopotamian campaign. He was badly wounded and subsequently died from his wounds on 2nd May 1916. Private Arthur Norman is buried at Basra War Cemetery. In 1943 his eldest son became a casualty of WW2 and now both father and son are Remembered with Honour on the Stradbroke War Memorial. Source: www.ancestry.co.uk www.cwgc.org Ann Readman, SARA

The 3 Rectors Stradbroke has been an exceptional village in having not one but three distinctive and unique rectors who have all played a part on a much wider stage. As such, we would like to launch a major exhibition of these 3 extraordinary men and the influence they had in Stradbroke. The natural place for this is in the Church and we are hoping this will attract more visitors to Stradbroke thus creating a ripple effect of greater use of our shops, pubs and other amenities. A project of this scale could also draw valuable funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund that would immediately boost the resources needed for essential repair work to this central and iconic building in our village. In order to gain this funding we need to demonstrate a cohesive plan engaging the community so we are currently working on formulating this based on using the 3 vicars as our central focus then incorporating social, visual and oral history combined with contemporary technology. We have lots of exciting ideas that have been stimulated by talking to experts both within the Museum field and ecclesiastical and historical organisations. The Reverends Ryle, Upcher and Streeter have provided us with such a rich vein of material we cannot resist sharing it with the wider community while continuing their enthusiasm and dedication in the promotion and development of Stradbroke. We are submitting our first stage plan to the Heritage Lottery Fund in May after which we will be informed if we are successful to make a full bid. We will keep you all informed of both the progress and the details of the planning. Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley Co-ordinator of Project FOASS, Rev. Susan Loxton

Forthcoming Events

The Stradbroke Sports and Community Centre Cinema On Thursday, 19th. May, we are showing “Bridge of Spies” 7.00 for 7.30 pm. The Bar will be open and ice-creams will be on sale in the interval. Entrance is £5.50. During the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers. Director: Steven Spielberg.Writers: Matt Charman, Ethan Coen. | Stars: Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Alan Alda. A feel-good Cold War historical/legal drama, Bridge of Spies is an absorbing true-life espionage tale very smoothly handled by old pros who know what they're doing. If you are expecting a political drama about the cold war, it is that but expect to have fun; it is humorous. Mark Rylance shines out as the acting star of the film. His salubrious and calm turn as the cornered spy just reeks of class. A film that will hit you strangely. Advance notice: Thursday, 16th. June “Dad’s Army”, Thursday 21st. July, “Room” There will be no showing in August. The Community Centre’s seventeeth Annual General Meeting is to be held on Tuesday, 17th. May, at 7.30 pm in the Webb Room. (All Welcome). We are on the look out for someone to help with the admin for the Cinema. Margaret Streeter

Library/Post Office/Court House Café News A lot of people have been in to say that they heard me on the BBC Radio4 Today programme with John Humphrys a few weeks ago. The programme was about libraries and their struggle for importance and existence in the UK, in the current political climate of recession and cuts to local government spending. My point was that libraries have had to evolve to suit community needs in modern times. In Stradbroke, our library is an important example of how the library can thrive and be at the heart of a community with the Post Office and Café in the Courthouse. Half an hour after the ‘Today’ interview, Radio 5Live phoned to ask me to be on Nicky Campbell’s programme to talk about the place of libraries and what they have to do to keep pace with the modern world. I talked about the Post Office at Stradbroke and also about Ipswich library where they have music gigs and that you can get married there in the licensed Northgate room if you want to. Rethinking services is at the heart of a modern library and Suffolk Libraries can be seen as successful examples of this in progress. We had a very enjoyable 2 evenings of Scandinavian dining in the Courthouse Café with 60 people sitting down to a 4 course meal with a Nordic theme. I would like to thank everyone who helped to make this a success (Claire, Toni, Alex, Owen) but particularly Marianne Pierce-Saunderson for her help, support and expert knowledge leading the team through. She even made all the bread and meatballs! On Thursday 21st April we had a Vintage Tea for 30 guests to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. June Hampson and Claudene Merritt organized this excellent royal event and everyone who came had a lovely time. A special mention to Rosemary Warne for making a speech and toast to the Queen and for leading us in singing the National Anthem. Forthcoming Event: On Saturday 11th June at 7pm for a 7.30pm start Suffolk Libraries’ Presents: ‘Billy Elliot the Musical Live’ Set in a northern mining town against the background of the 1984/85 miner’s strike. Billy Elliot is the inspirational story of a young boy’s struggle against the odds to make his dreams come true. Featuring a timeless score by Elton John, sensational dance and a powerful story that has captivated audiences around the world. This production is a funny, uplifting, spectacular theatrical experience. Tickets £8 booking essential. Call in at the library or telephone 01379 384768 or 07507802360 Bar available for refreshments wine/beer/soft drinks. We always have a supply of Euros and US dollars in the Post Office and we can order any currency you require with a little bit of notice. So think of using us for your currency for your holidays abroad this summer. Maureen John, Library/Post Office manager

Festifull 2016 This year’s Festifull on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th June is getting ever closer and we are all hoping it’s going to be just as successful as previous years. We have a number of new entertainers for the arena including Majorettes and a Magician. This year we will have two large marquees to provide more space for stall holders and visitors and there will be the usual catering tents. The junior five-a-side football tournament will be running again with forty teams from across the county and south Norfolk. On Sunday afternoon we have the ever popular It’s a Knockout Wipeout. The Festifull is perhaps the only event in Stradbroke’s social calendar that is truly for everyone and a chance for clubs and societies to raise awareness and/or funds and it is a great opportunity to meet neighbours and friends in a relaxed atmosphere. We are always looking for more helpers or if you haven’t already booked your stall please get in contact with one of the organising team – Maria Smith, Karine Last, Julia Green, Sam Hackett, Martin Allison and myself. More details in next month’s magazine and on the village website. Roger Turkington, 01379 384248

Open Garden ‘Get checked out dad’, my daughters kept telling me. I had never thought about it, and then, despite the repeated plea I never had time. And then I did. I got checked. And everything changed. My name is Philip Greenacre, my wife, Chris, and I were farmers until our retirement in 2008. We had always worked, and worked hard, so, in retirement we knew we needed a project. Chris had always loved gardening and I have always loved Chris so it seemed natural that our project should be a garden. So we bought Furze House in Rushall with its two acres of land. To be honest when we moved in the garden was no more than lawn, trees and 4 herbaceous beds. But we had a vision and set out to achieve it. The garden has evolved over the last eight years and now boasts over 50 beds full of shrubs, perennials and rare plants sourced from around the United Kingdom and Europe. We entered the National Garden Scheme yellow book in 2010 and received our five year certificate in 2015. 2015 was the last year of NGS for us, because in 2015 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. I had no symptoms, so going to the doctors was not a priority. I felt fine, but gradually I was worn down by the determine nagging of my two daughters (no idea where they get that part of their nature from). The first PSA test came back slightly higher than normal so a retest was booked for 3 months. The second test showed an increase so I was referred to a Urology consultant for a biopsy. The results from the biopsy stated 50% of the samples were cancerous. This was when the NHS, and especially the wonderful staff at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, really got going. The first step was a course of hormone tablets followed by hormone injections. I then became a member of the “37” club as I endured 37 days of radiotherapy. It was hard there is no getting away from that, but my treatment by the staff at the NNUH was nothing short of exceptional. Everyone always had a smile and was always positive. Chris and I felt we needed to give something back to the NNUH for the marvellous treatment I had received, and for us we could see no better way than to reopen our garden to raise funds for the radiotherapy department. So that is what we are doing with two open weekends this year, plus all the ‘by appointment’ group visits. And if you are wondering, in February this year I had my latest PSA test, it came back at 0.1%. I was clear of cancerous cells. Together we had beaten it. So my advice to all those gentlemen out there of a certain age, if you have a nagging daughter, or son, take a moment to listen and get checked. Furze House will be open the weekends of: Saturday 4th to Monday 6th June (10am – 5pm) Saturday 20th to Monday 22nd August (10am – 5pm) We look forward to welcoming you so we can raise as many funds as possible. Entry - £3.50, children free. Light refreshments available. Dogs on leads welcome. Furze House, Harleston Road, Rushall, IP21 4RT Philip Greenacre

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club Firstly, a big Thank You to everyone who supported our Horse Race Evening. Despite numbers being down on last year (60), the Cricket Club is a staggering £1150 better off, which covers our annual insurance bill. I hinted that it may be the 16th & last event given the shortage of volunteers & technical issues, but there are 1150 reasons why it may not be! Shortage is this months theme. We are always short of players, so it is gratifying that some are going the extra mile to enable us to put out two teams in the opening weekend. Shortage of coaches is becoming an issue. Junior training starts on Fridays from 29th April, 6pm to 7:30. We desperately need back up coaching, even a willing parent, putting out equipment, an extra pair of eyes on the field, is more worth than you may think. It would be terrible if Suffolks oldest cricket club were forced to turn prospective junior cricketers away because of a lack of manpower. Shortage of rain is certainly something we cannot moan about. Thankfully, the sun shone on Cricket Force Day, where 12 members & volunteers spruced up the Playing Field as well as installing a rainwater harvesting system. Within 24 hours the new water butt was full to overflowing, so we know it works. With our first match already cancelled a week in advance, & the threat of snow, birthday boy William Shakespeare sums it up so much better than I can: “Winter, which, being full of care, makes summer’s welcome thrice more wished more rare”. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Football Club Since last months newsletter, we have had 3 matches cancelled by the opposition. The only result is Elmsett 3 Stradbroke 5. We have only 2 more fixtures to complete the season. The clubs AGM is on 1st June. All welcome. Mary Ellis

Suffolk Walking Festival Walking into history in the Heart of Suffolk. Discover the History on your doorstep. ‘A Stroll Through the Ages’ (part of the 2016 Suffolk Walking Festival number 48) will enrich your knowledge of Stowmarket which has pre-Saxon roots, and there is evidence of a Roman settlement. 16th, 17th and 18th century buildings are dotted around the town in the conservation areas. For more information about the 9th Walking Festival, please call in to the Tourist Information Centre (just opposite ASDA, up the hill) or visit www.suffolkwalkingfestival.co.uk. The Tourist Information Centre also has a free self-guided walk around Stowmarket. Did you know there is a 75 acre museum in the heart of Stowmarket, with many historic buildings relocated from elsewhere to be preserved? They include the Settling House, from Bury St Edmunds market, Edgars Farmhouse from Combs Lane and Alton Watermill. On Sunday 8th May, the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket will be hosting TRACTION’16. This new event will draw together a range of tractors and machinery, including examples seen at work in the fields of Suffolk during the last 100 years. For more information go to www.eastanglianlife.org.uk There are several fascinating smaller museums in the surrounding villages – Woolpit, Laxfield, Buxhall (Granary Crafts), Brockford Light Railway, and The Mechanical Music at Cotton. All have a wealth of information about their specialisms, and most are open at weekends from May-September. Sue Green

Tips to prevent falls Around one in three people over 65 and half of over 80s will have a fall every year. Even if you fall and are not hurt, a bad fall can shake your confidence. Most falls are the result of a combination of factors including physical health, mental health, poor eyesight, hearing problems, prescribed medications - which can have side effects, heart problems or sudden changes in your blood pressure, which can make you feel faint. The good news is that falls are NOT an inevitable part of getting old, and there is plenty you can do to avoid them. Exercise – Regular exercise such as walking, swimming, housework and gardening all strengthen your muscles, so you are less likely to fall and better able to recover if you do. Get regular eye and hearing tests – You may qualify for free sight tests so make sure to ask your local optician. Your GP can also help to arrange a full sight or hearing test. Visit the Chiropodist – Keeping your feet and toenails healthy and in good condition will help in your maintenance of overall good health. Conditions like diabetes or circulatory problems can all be picked up by looking at the feet. Keep your doctors informed – Always tell the doctors treating you everything you’re taking, including tablets your doctor hasn’t prescribed but which you’ve bought yourself. Make your home safer – install non slip rug pads under area rugs, place a rubber mat in the bath or shower, wear sturdy shoes or slippers inside, install brighter lights on your stairs and landing, mop up spills immediately, and keep things you use every day at an easy to reach level. Fix My Street please! FixMyStreet is an independent website, built by the charity ‘mySociety’. We wanted to make it easier to report problems in your community, even if you don't know who those reports should go to. So we made FixMyStreet. All you have to do is type in a postcode – or let the site locate you automatically – and describe your problem. Then we send your report to the people whose job it is to fix it. FixMyStreet covers the whole of the UK. No matter where you are, the only thing you ever have to remember is our web address – FixMyStreet.com.
