‘THE EMPTY CHAIR’ (This was not written by me, but sums up quite well a fairly recent experience.)

A man's daughter had asked the local pastor to come and pray with her father. When the pastor arrived, he found the man lying in bed with his head propped up on two pillows and an empty chair beside his bed. The pastor assumed that the old fellow had been informed of his visit.

"I guess you were expecting me," he said. "No, who are you?" "I'm the new minister at the local chapel," the pastor replied. "When I saw the empty chair, I figured you knew I was going to show up." "Oh yeah, the chair," said the bedridden man. "Would you mind closing the door?" Puzzled, the pastor shut the door.

"I've never told anyone this, not even my daughter," said the man. "But all of my life I have never known how to pray. At chapel I used to hear the pastor talk about prayer, but it always went right over my head.."

"I abandoned any attempt at prayer," the old man continued, "until one day about four years ago my best friend said to me, 'Joe, prayer is just a simple matter of having a conversation with Jesus. Here's what I suggest. Sit down on a chair, place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith see Jesus on the chair. It's not spooky because he promised, 'I'll be with you always.' Then just speak to him and listen in the same way you're doing with me right now." "So, I tried it and I've liked it so much that I do it a couple of hours every day. I'm careful, though. If my daughter saw me talking to an empty chair, she'd either have a nervous breakdown or send me off to the funny farm." The pastor was deeply moved by the story and encouraged the elderly man to continue on the journey.

Then he prayed with him, and returned to the chapel.

Two nights later the daughter called to tell the pastor that her daddy had died that afternoon. "Did he seem to die in peace?" he asked. "Yes, when I left the house around two o'clock, he called me over to his bedside, told me one of his corny jokes, and kissed me on the cheek. When I got back from the store an hour later, I found him dead. But there was something strange, in fact, beyond strange-kinda weird. Apparently, just before Daddy died, he leaned over and rested his head on a chair beside the bed." -Author Unknown Hebrews 4:16… Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Unfortunately we had to cancel the Jumble Sale on 10th October due to Covid. We are now having 2 cake stalls on November 7th 8.30am in Church Street and the X Cake stall on December 12th. We are also trying to boost the church finances with a large X Hamper. Tickets on sale at the bakery, and from committee members. Please support these events. Thanks.

Many thanks to Andrew Hugman, who bravely did the cycle ride and raised £195 for Historic Churches Fund. Half of this amount goes to our church. This was a brilliant effort due to him being so ill during the years. Once again, thanks Andrew.

From the Rectory…

Dear friends and neighbours I like November; I like sitting in the warm, hugging a hot drink, whilst the wind blows cold outside. I remember bonfire nights when I was young, all gathering together sharing what we had; food and fireworks. Looking back these take on a sentimental glow, but behind the smiles people were struggling with all kinds of things. The local bath factory was about to close and many local people would lose their jobs; parents worried about their children, their older relatives, money, jobs….

November is a time for remembering, we remember Guy Fawkes, often with a smile. We remember those who lost their lives, health, loved ones through war, often with tears; and the church celebrates All Souls and All Saints.

All Souls is the commemoration of the faithful departed and All Saints when we celebrate men and women in whose lives the Church as a whole has seen the grace of God powerfully at work. I like to think as well, of the unknown ordinary Christians who worked humbly in the background, and I know that God sees all we do in secret, which I believe, one day, will be honoured in heaven.

Well, November 2020 will be remembered for its challenges, hardships, changes of priorities, and also good neighbourliness; more people helping others, sticking to the rules to keep our neighbours safe and a whole host of other things. As I write this it seems there is a very good chance that Christmas will be different this year too. I will miss being together with all my family to celebrate. I will miss singing carols with young and old, but I will enjoy doing things a bit differently – not sure how yet but I am thinking it will be a far simpler celebration this year. And, when all is said and done, the reason we celebrate is because a Saviour was born not in a palace but a cave or stable amongst the animals and hay. Such humble beginnings, with such a big calling – to reconcile man to God. The Christmas story reminds me that God can take the ordinary and turn it into something extraordinary; he can take whatever we offer him, bless it and make it amazing. This November, as we remember the past, let us think about the coming Christmas season too and how God might make it special if we offer what we have to him and the service of others….

MEETING OF STRADBROKE PARISH COUNCIL – 12th October 2020 Councillors co-opted Brett Baber to fill one of the outstanding vacancies.

The Parish Council submitted no comments on planning applications.

Councillors noted MSDC planning outcomes as follows – DC/20/02918 – Chestnut House, Wilby Road IP21 5JP GRANTED DC/20/02966 – Land at Battlesea Green REFUSED Parish Council Updates: · The application to lift Condition 15 at Barley Brigg is to be considered by Suffolk County Council on 21st October. · A meeting between the Parish Council and the Trustees of the Stradbroke Sports and Community Centre has yet to be arranged. · A timetable for the urgent works at the Health Centre is being drawn up. · An energy audit has been undertaken and recommendations are awaited. · Tree works at the Health Centre and Church are underway. A date for the Tennis Court work is still awaited. · A smart meter is being installed for the Community Shed. · A review of applications to join the users of the Community Shed was deferred pending a meeting of the User Group. · Councillors decided not to pursue Quiet Lanes at this time. · The Council is applying for grant funding to install electric charging points at the Wilby Road car park. · A safety inspection of the exercise equipment surrounding the fitness track has been arranged. · Parish Council email accounts will be funded for all councillors and the Clerk. · The ½ year accounts were reviewed and Councillors noted there were no audit points received. · Lorry watchers have started gathering information on movements within the centre of Stradbroke. · Speed watch – there are now enough volunteers to start the scheme. Additional volunteers are welcome to join the group as this would enable more monitoring to take place, please contact the Clerk. · Broadband working group have met and have reviewed the information from the recent survey. · Youth Council – research is underway how to progress this. Possibility to include young people from other villages that attend Stradbroke schools.

Stradbroke Allotments

I know that we were all doing a dance for the rain to come, but we did not expect it to come for so long and be so heavy. Last year my lavender did not like the down pours that we had in the Autumn and a lot of my rows died from their roots sitting on the clay. Cutting back to the centre can help and mulching sand and grit so that the water can drain away from the roots. Everyone has worked really hard on the allotments during lock down. It was a safe place to go and exercise in such a worrying time. It has really paid off as the plots have been full of fantastic vegetables and flowers. We have had a few Hedgehogs on the plots, so some of the slugs and snails came to a prickly end.

Can I remind you that as November the 5th is drawing near, that hedgehogs tend to hibernate in the middle of bonfires. It is a good idea to try and move the bonfire to another space if you can, just in case you have them in the middle. We have been feeding five of them over the summer, on dried cat food, but now they seem to have started to hibernate. The Plot lot held a produce market in the summer, where people could come and buy items from a distance and this worked very well. We will be looking into doing this next year on a monthly basis during the growing season, so watch this space. As holding any gathering this year for Christmas is out of the question, we have decided to hold a raffle to raise funds instead. Tickets will be available from Poppies and Daisies Tea Shop, Church Street from the 28th November and will be drawn on the 19th December. Keep your eye on the posters later around the village to see what goodies can be won. Stradbroke Court House and Library News

Stradbroke Library is pleased to announce that the request service is fully available for ordering books in and you can browse our shelves to take books out. We have some new greetings cards in and some lovely charity Christmas cards. There are some from Suffolk Libraries as well, so come in and have a look at what we have got and support our library and SCALT. We also have our usual Christmas gift cards, perfect for those that you have difficulty buying presents for. There are loads of different retail outlets to use them, also online shopping. We still have the mummy and baby kangaroo with a green ribbon that was left behind before the lockdown in the Library. If these are yours, please call in and pick them up as they are looking very forlorn and want to go home. I think this will be the last time of me asking, I will take them home if no-one comes in to collect them during November.

Just to warn you, we may have a different procedure for queuing for the Post Office during December. This is to make sure that everyone can wait in the dry and warm during the Christmas rush and observe social distancing. The entrance in would be through the Court House Café room and coming into the Post Office Library through the children’s library section. When you exit it will be through the Post Office/Library door in the usual way. We will start this system at the beginning of December when it gets really busy.

If you are worried about coming to use the Post Office/Library during the Christmas period when it is busy, due to anxiety, shielding or underlying health conditions, please give Maureen a ring 01379 384768 (when we are open) or mobile 07507802360 and we will try to arrange to fit you in for a visit, when we are not open to the general public.

It’s almost that time again! All of us in Stradbroke have housing needs and the only way to understand what they are and plan to meet them is to undertake a survey! Maybe you are looking to downsize or your adult children want to move into the village but prices make that a challenge? Perhaps you have a young family and your starter home is just getting a bit small, and you need mid priced family homes in the village? If you rent, you will know why the survey is important! It is very difficult to have much in the way of private rental choice in Stradbroke! The Stradbroke Community Land Trust is your local organisation working to ensure the houses we need are the houses that are provided (and it is YOUR local organisation - you should join in!) Stradbroke has Housing Needs Surveys every few years - because obviously needs change and evolve, and this survey is no exception. The last survey was in about 2014 which seems like yesterday, but was SIX years ago! The exciting thing about the next survey is that we now have our award nominated Neighbourhood Plan as the vehicle to deliver the housing you and your family need now and in the future. Next month we will give you more information about the content of the survey and what will be done with the information the Community Land Trust collect. It’s exciting to be able to focus on and plan for the future at a time when everything in the present is so very odd! Look out for the survey in Spring 2021 - it’s going to be important for Stradbroke and for you.

Stradbroke Village Archive

During the last month we have added more audio memories to the archive. Gordon Nunn, Mike Readman and Rob Lake sat down with Jack Warne, George Smith and George Hawes and recalled past times. http://www.stradbrokearchive.org.uk/exhibits/show/audioandvisual/audio During WW2 there was a real fear of invasion and a secret army was established to slow down and hold back the enemy. The hope was that the delay would give the military forces time to regroup and establish an effective counterattack. The structure of the secret army was such that no-one knew the order of command and as such could not divulge that information if captured. Stradbroke had its secret army. Their job was to sabotage, infiltrate, assassinate and each of them had a life expectancy of just 10 days. Brave men. They wore the uniform of the Home Guard as cover but did not discuss with any one other than their recruited secret army comrades what they did. They were supplied with the best and latest weapons which were kept in a secret store. As far as we know these men were not called upon and when the war was over, they were not recognised as having served. No medals, no badges. Radio Stradbroke

What started as a hasty response to lockdown, in an attempt to keep the villagers informed of events, Radio Stradbroke's 'Home Service' has passed six months of continuous, daily broadcasts, with little sign of stopping.

The current uncertainty makes the service as relevant as it was back in March. Normally, I would be reporting the amount of money raised from the Annual Pop Music Quiz, but this has been shelved for the foreseeable. Although all the DJs are volunteers, it still costs a not inconsiderable amount to keep the station running; with licences, PRS, website, server, stream, etc to pay for, but we will continue as long as we are able to bring you good music & good advice. Stradbroke Sports and Community Centre

On October 17th and 18th the Public Consultation for the proposed extension to the Club Room was held in the SSCC. This well attended event provided us with lots of positive comments and there was an overwhelming support for a 2-storey extension. Dear Members of Staff, Thanks are expressed for the really efficient planning, and execution of your Flu jab strategy on Saturday. It was well thought out, courteous, caring and worked like a dream.

The car park attendants set the stage with their initial instructions, next the greeting at the door to check letters, before we were ushered on to the control point to wait for a vacancy with a ‘practitioner of the needle.’ Full marks to my lady who was so gentle that I did not feel the needles entry. A first class job.

Well done all. Let us hope that next October there will be a less difficult regime to work within.

Since she moved to the village in 2016, she made many friends, including her neighbours, people she met at the Over 60s, the Baptist Church lunches and the staff at the Spar who were always ready to help her with her shopping trolley. When her mother was alive they always enjoyed playing bingo and was delighted to be able to do this again in the Community Centre. She had been admitted to Norfolk and Norwich hospital on the 9th August in great pain and although very poorly, with the expert care they gave her in Brundall Ward, she was going to be sent to the Hartismere for rehabilitation before coming home to her bungalow, which she loved living in. Sadly, just before that was due to happen, Joyce had a relapse and passed away quite peaceably. We would like to thank all our neighbours, her carer, and friends for all the condolence cards they sent. She is greatly missed.

Another sell-out for our October screening! Thank you for supporting the cashless system in place now. A real treat as a riotous social satire working on many levels – black comedy, thriller, horror and family drama all wrapped in the class issue.

We are so pleased to announce that our full dial-a-ride service is back up and running. It has been a long period of uncertainty for everyone but we are now able to once again provide transport around the local area for our members. However, we all need to continue to be alert and take all the precautions we can while attempting to go about our usual business.

Seating will be limited for a while to allow for the correct social distancing within the vehicle and we will ask passengers to use the hand sanitisers provided on the vehicles and to wear face masks.

We are also asking that where possible, the driver is paid in the correct change as we are trying to limit the amount of cash that is passed around.

Stradbroke Cricket Club

Nature has a way of redressing the order of the world. After twiddling our thumbs through a hot, dry May & June, the restart of cricket at the end of July would be the trigger for wet weather. Thankfully, the Cricket Club were able to complete seven of our eight fixtures, by late September. With all that has been thrown at us this year, we deserved a break. Three days after our last match, with the square prepared for Autumn dressing, it started to rain, & has hardly stopped since. One day in October saw 51mm fall (a record). Nature's way of drawing a line under this season, thoughts moving on to next year. By now the Two Counties League AGM would have taken place, but has been delayed, possibly because 60 odd Clubs + Committee need to attend, virtually, so there is nothing new to report this month, except to reiterate our thanks to everyone who contributed to the welfare of the Cricket Club this year, even in a small way. We are in a position to look ahead with some optimism, something I fear not every Club in Suffolk can say. Keep supporting your local Cricket Club.

Despite the summer tennis season ending members are still able to enjoy playing tennis on the Club's all weather courts during the winter months. Social play afternoons take place all year on Mondays and Thursdays between 1.30 and 4.00pm.

Suffolk Police

During the recent wet weather, the heavy rainfall has caused a number of our roads to flood. Police will often be called to attend a road flood to assess if it is passable by motorists or whether it needs to be closed to traffic.

If a road closure is required, Police will sometimes place temporary, blue signs stating “Road Closed”. If the closure is likely to be in place for some days, Suffolk County Council will be asked to place their large, red “Road Closed” signs and set up a diversion, posted with the yellow “Diversion” sings.

When motorists see these signs, it can be assumed they have been placed for critical reasons, either due to a present danger or to allow emergency services to operate in safety. Officers from Halesworth have recently had to re-attend a flooded road which had to be closed due to motorists becoming stranded. Re-attendance was needed because motorists had moved the road closed signs and driven over the police scene tape placed between the signs to re-enforce the message.

Despite some motorists being able to negotiate the flood in their 4x4 vehicles, others who followed them were driving less capable cars and needed rescuing by emergency services. The only way to prevent this is for all motorists to respect the road closed sings. Please do so the next time you see a road closed sign.

Aimee’s Marathon Success

The assistant manager at a popular Suffolk pub battled torrential rain and strong winds on Sunday (4 October) to complete the virtual London Marathon on behalf of the Pear Tree Fund.

Aimee Button, who works at the Queen’s Head in Bramfield, completed the 26.2 mile distance by running loops based around the pub. The 26-year-old finished the race in seven hours and 55 minutes – and said it simply would not have been possible without the fantastic support she received along the way.

Aimee has so far raised more than £1,200 for the Pear Tree Fund, but will keep her fundraising page open for a further month in the hope of increasing the total still further.

“I was very sore on Monday but so proud that I did it!” said Aimee, who lives in Lowestoft. “The wind and rain made for horrible conditions to run in and running laps was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I honestly couldn’t have got through it without the support of everyone, both on the day and beforehand.

“I’ve been truly overwhelmed by the love and support from everyone and am truly honoured to be fortunate enough to run for a fabulous charity.”

The Pear Tree Fund, formerly known as Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund, was set up more than 30 years ago support people with life-limiting illnesses who wish to die in the comfort and security of their own homes.

More recently, it raised £900,000 to build the Pear Tree Centre, which opened earlier this year on land next to Cutlers Hill Surgery in Halesworth and brings a full range of holistic services closer to home for people with cancer or other life-limiting illnesses. This includes benefits advice, support for children and families, complementary therapies, help understanding a diagnosis, counselling and bereavement support. The charity is now raising money towards the centre’s £180,000 a year running costs.

Ted Edwards, charity trustee, said: “We are hugely grateful to Aimee for choosing to support our charity and battling such horrendous weather to complete the 26.2 mile distance. She should be incredibly proud of her achievement.”

At the time of my writing, we find ourselves continuing to live with Coronavirus and its effect on our day to day lives. Although cases are rising rapidly in other parts of the country, figures remain relatively low in Suffolk thanks to the hard work and dedication of so many who have stringently made sacrifices and followed the guidance to try to keep the virus in check.

As we move ahead into what will undoubtedly be a very challenging time, it is vital that we all continue to play our part in helping to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus and help to protect our NHS: a Cover your face and maintain social distancing (keeping at least 2 metres apart from people who are not from your own household). This helps to protect each other and helps to reduce the spread of the virus; a Good hand and respiratory hygiene (for example, thorough washing of your hands and wrists for about 20 seconds before eating and when returning home after leaving the house) a To protect others, it is vital NOT to leave home if you or anyone in house household has Coronavirus symptoms Remember – Wash Hands, Cover Face, Make Space!

The arrival of the colder winter months, coupled with the annual cold and flu season, means the months ahead will undoubtedly present many challenges. That is why I would urge all of you who are eligible to make sure you receive your flu vaccination this winter. The eligibility list has been expanded to include the most vulnerable people, including adults aged 65 years and over, those with long-term health conditions and pregnant women; all primary school children and Year 7 children; 2 and 3 year olds; household contact of people on the NHS Shielded Patients List, and all health and social care workers who have direct contact with the people they care for. Once these people have received their vaccination, the newly eligible 50-64 year olds will also be invited for vaccination later in the season.

As part of my work in Parliament, at the end of September I chaired a meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Coronavirus. The APPG has been established with the aim of ensuring that lessons are learned from the UK’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak. It is important that we can learn lessons about what things we can do better, in order to better inform future decisions and to ensure that our health and care system is fully prepared for what is likely to come.
