Many people have asked that question, and the answer is yes! But it was also very sad with lots of mixed emotions. When you meet people in tears who tell you that they have lost members of their family in the war, and then hug you for coming to their country, how do you react? During our visit, Hope Now paid for a medical team to come to Kompass Park where the camp complex has been built and is situated in a small village. The team of five arrived on Friday, and for three days, the stream of villagers and those enjoying the five day break at the camp were able to have basic medical attention. Teeth were extracted, blood pressure and diabetes monitored, medicines given out, infections treated plus minor operations to remove lumps and bumps. We were able to watch these procedures, which were carried out in an old kitchen. We shared the love of Jesus with these frightened people who fear for their country, remembering the persecution that has been so much a part of their existence for many years. We were very glad that we were able to bring a little joy and comfort into their lives. Thank you for supporting this work. We look forward to the Zozulenka dance group who will be performing for us on Thursday 13th November at 7pm. Please come and enjoy a Ukraine evening with us – Jackie Enjoy the culture and costumes of Ukraine, with Hope Now. Cameo Lunch Club a special visitor! For some months now all cash received at our Coffee Mornings has been donated to St. Elizabeth’s hospice, and we were fortunate that a speaker from the charity came. The speaker gave us an update of new developments at the hospice and also explained their income sources. It was surprising to discover that eighteen percent of income is from their charity shops. Very few of us can volunteer at the hospice, but we can all support as we donate or purchase items from their shops. For further details please contact: John 388751 Jackie 384112

A Message from Rev Susan Dear Friends & Neighbours, Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, fire and smoke! November is a time to remember; many churches across the country will have held services of thanksgiving and memorial on Sunday 2nd to help us remember those we have loved and lost through death. We have such a service in Fressingfield parish church for all our villages. During the service there is the opportunity to light a candle for those we remember. The candles look lovely twinkling on the altar table and remind us that the love we shared will always remain. Then of course there will be Remembrance Day services, there will be many people who attend for whom this is their one visit to church each year, and that is o.k. for we have been called by God to be there for all, particularly in times of great joy or sadness. As I prepare for the Remembrance Day service I cannot help but feel both sad and sorry because although so many suffered so much loss in the two world wars, here we are in 2014 and every day we hear of more loss of life and limb in violence and conflicts across the world. Will you join me in praying for peace? Help me, O Lord, to make peace where I am, to turn dividing walls into bridges, and bring friendship in the place of strife, to be a neighbour to those near at hand and to those far away, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Take care & God bless, Susan

MEETING OF THE PARISH COUNCIL 6 OCTOBER 16 members of the public attended. PUBLIC FORUM: no items were brought to the attention of the Parish Council at this time PLANNING: (for reasons of economy of space the details have been truncated; further details can be obtained from the Clerk): Applications for consideration: 2532/14 erection of 3 dwellings with alteration to access Land adjacent
Next meeting of the Parish Council 10th Nov 2014 at 7.30pm in the Community Centre
The Laurels Bungalow, Church Street
2873/14 demolition of existing single storey storage/ancillary building and erection of new single story office building Roger Skinner Ltd, Queens Street Unanimous approval was recommended for both the above applications Results of planning applications considered by MSDC since the PC last met. Planning permission granted for: 1928/14 Land rear of Stradbroke Business Centre, New Street 2238/14 Oakfields, Battlesea Green 2358/14 5 Westhall 2412/14 The Oaks, Laxfield Road 2573/14 New Street Farmhouse, New Street Other Planning Matters: The Tree Officer had agreed to some remedial work being carried out on trees at a property in Priory Close, adjoining The Priory, crown lift to 3m and dead wood removed. No notification was required. Council advised of tree work at Apple Tree Cottage – this did not require permission. OTHER BUSINESS: PROMOTING STRADBROKE: a retailer expressing keen interest in taking over the tenancy of the Spar shop as soon as possible had since withdrawn citing the unfavourable terms in relation to the possible development of the garage site by the Coop. It seemed likely a manager would be installed in the Spar shop to facilitate opening in November. LIBRARY & COURTHOUSE: the refurbishment in preparation for the Post Office opening was almost complete. The Trustees assured the meeting that opening hours would be monitored and reviewed, if necessary, after a period of time had allowed for the service to settle down. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN: a Housing Needs survey would be undertaken in the village to inform a Neighbourhood Plan. Residents were urged, most strongly, to complete and return this. More responses received give a more accurate picture of housing need in the village and this would then feed into the Neighbourhood Plan making it a credible document with relevance to Stradbroke’s future. POLICE REPORT: there had been two crimes since the last meeting: one theft for which a suspect was on bail; a second theft the case of which had been closed as unresolved. PC Jacqui Thomas told the meeting she was keen to resurrect Neighbourhood Watch in the village. Anyone interested should contact her directly and she would provide full information. The role of co-ordinator could be shared so a group of friends might be able to take this on rather than putting the full responsibility onto one person. An active Neighbourhood Watch Scheme would be a great asset to the village. STREET LIGHTING: the project was not quite complete NOTICE: An open presentation was to be held at the Community Centre during the day on 11 November 2014 so residents could examine the proposal for a mixed housing development at Grove Farm and put forward comments prior to any planning application being made. Members of the public and press are very welcome to attend meetings of the Parish Council and to bring matters of concern or information to the attention to Members in the time allocated to the Public Forum, which takes place prior to the start of every meeting. Meetings may be recorded but those doing so are respectfully requested undertake this in a discreet manner so as not to disrupt the meeting or cause disturbance to others. Minutes of the meetings are held in the Library and are posted on the Notice Board. The November Meeting of the Parish Council will be held in the Community Centre at 7.30pm on Monday, 10 November 2014 Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy Manfield House, 7 Norwich Road, Ditchingham, NR35 2JJ tel: 07817 441195 email: clerkspc@thesmys.com **Please make non-emergency calls to the Clerk between 0830 and 1800hrs Monday to Friday only**

W.I. What a great meeting we had in October, and such a happy one, as we welcomed our President Dorothy Readman back after her recent hip replacement. Dorothy thanked everyone for their kindness, help and support whilst she was out of action. Dianne gave a short update on County matters and Gill updated members on the Gala Dinner being held in December. Maryann Cartwright has become our newest member. A very warm welcome to her. Dorothy then introduced Yula, a choir leader from Framlingham, who declared she would get us all singing. And she did just that. Yula burst onto the scene with such energy and verve. Telling members of her life in all genres of music, classical, jazz and pop, and being a young mum how she started the first of her three ‘Pop Choirs’. Taking little time to draw breath she got everyone on their feet to do some deep breathing exercises. Song sheets appeared, and before we knew it she had us singing ‘Living Doll’ the old Cliff Richard favourite. Mamma Mia was next, this time in two part harmony (we were doing well) so well that actions were brought in to play. It was great, and we were back in our heyday and having so much fun. Waterloo followed, and we were rocking. Finally we gave vent to Cher’s ‘Shoop Shoop’ song which created a lot of laughter. It is so true that music makes you happy and feel good. Usually members are ready for their refreshments, but I think if time had allowed we would have gone on singing. Joyce Lee gave a very fitting vote of thanks. Yula thank you, we loved it. Gill Bird
Radio Stradbroke The onset of Winter means just one thing: Radio Stradbroke ‘Sunday Sessions’ are back. Following the success of the StradJazz Festival, DJ Richard Pierce commemorated the 10th Anniversary of John Peel’s death with a tribute show, a taster for the months ahead. Novembers ‘Sunday Sessions’ are as follows: 2nd 10:00-13:00 Professor Kimberley Bannon presents ‘The Best Indie Show in the World, Ever!’ The First Lady of broadcasting shares her love of 90s Indie Music 9th 10:00-13:00 DJ Wes presents ‘Northern Soul Sandwich’. What is Wigan famous for? Pies? Pier? Rugby? No, the birthplace of Northern Soul. Tuck in! 16th 10:00-13:00 DJ Wally presents ‘One Hit Wonders’. All those songs you loved, hated, bought, forgot (delete as applicable) on one show. Where are they now? 23rd 10:00-13:00 DJ Dave presents ‘Darkness On the Edge of Stradbroke’. All things Bruce Springsteen are covered, with a little help from DJ Huggy (Superfan) & The Bootleg Boss (Springsteen tribute act), who will be playing live in the studio. A Love-In, yes, but an entertaining one. All of the above, & up to date news can be found on www.radiostradbroke.co.uk or on facebook page. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Church Fundraising Request THIS HISTORIC BUILDING DESPERATELY NEEDS YOUR HELP. Do you rely on the church being there for important occasions in your life? Are you a parent whose children use the church as part of their school activities? Are you simply someone who passes the church, the most impressive and historic building in our village, and assumes that it will always be there? You may not be a regular church goer, but.... if the answer to any of these questions is yes, then the following information will be of importance to you. The latest five yearly report shows that All Saints Church, is in such a poor state, that, without the sum of £62,000 for essential repairs, it will be in serious danger of being declared unsafe and be closed. This might sound a huge amount of money to find, but there is already £15,000 in the bank. If we can double this figure, then we will be in a strong position to apply for match funding grants, to double it again to the sum needed. You are probably aware that FOASS, (Friends of All Saints Stradbroke), a registered charity, holds events throughout the year to raise money to be used solely for repairs to the fabric of the church. These events, plus donations, have raised £23,000 in the last six years. We have an enormous task on our hands, but with the help and good will of the community, it is achievable. HOW CAN YOU HELP? 1) By supporting fundraising events. 2) By making regular donations via membership of FOASS. 3) With a one off donation. 4) By coming up with ideas for raising money. For more information please contact: Margaret Jenkins 01379 34825 or Carol Darling 01379 388098 Thank you, Carol Darling
Stradbroke Over 60s On Saturday 18th October we held our Annual Coffee Morning and Sale, with 12 stalls all manned by our members plus a further 3 helping in the kitchen. All our members are so happy and helpful and always willing to help raise funds for our group, we do no receive any grants so therefore are fully self supportive. At present we have 25 members who look forward to coming along each fortnight. The meetings are open to anyone to come along as a guest and give us a try to see if they would like to join us. We play cards, Scrabble, dominos, Beetle and hold raffles and auctions along with guest speakers, entertainers and coach trips throughout the year. Hope to see you sometime. Our meetings are held in the Community Centre, first and third Thursdays of the month, 2 till 4pm where we always put the kettle on! Our thanks to everyone who came along and supported us at our Coffee Morning and Sale which was very successful raising the grand total of £450, well done to all. Our November meetings will be on Thursdays 6th and 20th. On the 6th we have the Dawn Diamonds Duo from Weybread coming to entertain us with Country and Western Music. We have a Christmas lunch and party to look forward to on 27th November, after which we take a break and resume again on February 2nd 2015, weather permitting of course. Joan Grimes
Wingfield and District Gardening Club Luke Heydon gave us a very interesting talk on borders. Beginning in Autumn, he suggested that we really assess the problems that are lurking in our borders and remove them so that we can start afresh, cutting back overgrown shrubs and trees. Have an idea on the colours we wish to use through the year so that while our colour is used in the Spring, plants of a similar colour are coming along later in the year. He gave us lots of pictures and lists of suitable plants to provide structure and colour throughout the year. He also gave us an insight into the construction and preparation of his award winning display at Hampton Court Flower Show. A lot of work! We meet again at 30th October to hear about “The Gardens of the Ancients” by Edward Martin, 7.30pm at Brundish Village Hall. For further information, contact Caroline on 01379 384674

Stradbroke Village Digital Archive As part of the National Archives "Explore Your Archive" campaign, which begins on Saturday 15th November, Stradbroke Village Archive will be launching the Digital Archive of village history in the newly refurbished Court House in Stradbroke. Stradbroke has a rich rural history and has been fortunate to be lived in by a long line of photographers and collectors of village life. The Stradbroke Village Archive came into being through the hard work and perseverance of The Stradbroke Local History Group, who started to collect and preserve the village history in 1999 led by local history enthusiast Mike Readman. Over the years quite an amazing window into the long history of this village and the people in it has been collected. Sadly Mike died in 2013 and so Mike’s widow and daughter have worked with the Local History group to digitize and share this important resource. Ann Readman, Mike’s widow says of the Archive; “I promised Mike I would make the archive available to everyone on behalf of the Stradbroke Local History Group. It is a monumental task but Claire and I are very proud of the result. This is ongoing with only part of the archive covered so far and hopefully will never be finished as history happens every day. One of the many joys of living in a Suffolk village is that many of the buildings built years ago remain as they were and can be visited again through photographs and documents. Getting to know previous inhabitants and understanding their way of life is so enriching. In the year that our village primary school turns 150 years old, it is especially poignant that the oldest photograph in the archive is that of the opening day of the school, in 1864. This is a wonderful resource that we want people to discover and continue to add to.” Ann Readman
Friends of Stradbroke High School (FOSH) Update – November 2014. Our Mission “To support everyone at Stradbroke High School, in any way we can so it can become an outstanding School for the pupils.” On behalf of the Friends of Stradbroke High School (FOSH), I am delighted to report that we continue to be very successful in fundraising for the benefit of the pupils, with the total support of Headmaster Mr Bloom. Since June 2014, we have organised and helped out at the following events and collections. Scrap metal collection from the main building works at the High School, BBQ’s at the Stradbroke Festifull and Stradisphere music concert, collections of used ink jet cartridges, “Giving Machine” donations and of course the Stradbroke High School CARnival. The 2014 CARnival, proved to be a huge success with more pupils, parents, school staff and members of the community attending than in previous years. In particular, we engaged the pyramid Primary Schools and it was excellent to see so many families at the event. The CARnival, was this year supported by match funding from Aviva Insurance and Barclays Bank. This was made possible by the kind assistance of school parents who work for these companies. We were also supported by the manager of W.H. Brown Estate Agents and Jon Wilson photography who are both local residents. At the CARnival, we also launched the “Christmas Prize draw”. This draw will continue to be promoted with the winners being announced at the School Christmas concert on the 4th of December. Our next event is the Scrap Metal “drive-through” at the School, which is on Saturday the 8th of November 2014 between 8am and midday. Free to use skips will be available at this time to dispose of any metal items except fridge freezers. Our next Quiz Night is on Friday the 21st November 2014 starting at 7.30pm with a bar, soft drinks, sweets and prizes. This event is being sponsored by the Raj Puth restaurant in Halesworth, with free Indian snacks being offered during the evening. Recent Purchases: Following the CARnival, we held a “Dragons Den” style event at lunchtime, during which school staff and pupils were able to bid for support from the FOSH for any items they needed to improve the school. We had a significant amount of bids and I am pleased to report that we accommodated almost all of the wishes. These purchases are currently being ordered, delivered and implemented across all areas of the school with positive feedback and letters of thanks already being received. I’m also pleased to report that the School uniform supplier Birds of Dereham, also sponsored us during this process. The Future: We have now set ourselves the 2014/2015 challenge of fundraising specifically for increased numbers of specialist Mac computers for the music and Design departments and also for a PE high jump apparatus. This challenge will be reviewed in September 2015 following the CARnival. In addition to our various fundraising events, we will continue to seek further match funding and other sponsorship for the High School CARnival next year, which is now booked for Sunday the 13th of September 2015. As ever we welcome any advice, support or offers of help from everyone. Nigel Brown (FOSH Chairman)

Playing divorced couple Richard and Kate, Brosnan and Thompson depict the semi-stable state of long separations; spanning locations in Paris, London and the French Riviera, occasional conversations about new developments or old resentments, living separate lives. But when captain-ofindustry Brosnan sells his company to a larger megacorp whose CEO (Laurent Lafitte) then robs the entire pension fund and moves on like a predator in search of the next meal, Richard and Kate find themselves facing postretirement poverty right before the finish line of retirement age. Getting their money back will take them both outside of their comfort zone and result in them becoming surprisingly comfortable with each other once again. Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan together with fun, sun, and a righteous robbery make this Rob-the-Rich Rom-Com Work. Margaret Streeter

Neighbourhood Plan Volunteers Wanted! Are you willing to give an hour of your time to share your views and opinions on the current and future issues of Stradbroke? Your views and comments could help shape the future Planning and Development of Stradbroke via the Stradbroke Neighbourhood Plan. The Neighbourhood Plan Committee are reaching out to all sections of the community of Stradbroke, aiming to provide a true representation of the village and a foundation for further analysis. We have the help of a professional Market Researcher David Spenser who will be running 8 – 10 small separate groups consisting of 3 - 5 people during November and December at mutual convenient times and would like people to come forward and join David for an informal meeting in a warm and relaxed atmosphere at the Community Centre. David will be trying to understand what ‘you’ think are the issues and concerns for the village. David will subsequently summarise the information and report back to the Neighbourhood Plan Group with his findings. Once we have the summary details we will then be conducting Quantitative Analysis (deep dive) on those identified issues in the following months to help steer the Stradbroke Neighbourhood Plan. Please email np@stradbrokeonline.org.uk or telephone 384248 to register your interest. Update on the Neighbourhood Plan From Saturday 1st to Sunday 9th November 2014 we will be dropping the Housing Needs Survey to every dwelling in Stradbroke (c.700 dwellings). The Housing Needs Survey is conducted by a charity Community Action Suffolk and is periodically carried out to identify local Affordable Housing Needs. This was last carried out in Stradbroke in early 2010 and needs to be updated to support the Neighbourhood Plan. The previous survey identified a clear requirement for Affordable Housing and this was echoed in the Initial Consultation on 19th May 2010 for a Stradbroke Neighbourhood Plan. We have a team of c.20 resident volunteers who will drop an envelope to every household which will contain the survey questionnaire, a freepost envelope to return and the necessary instructions. Out of courtesy, the volunteers will knock at the door when they drop the envelopes to briefly explain what they are leaving. If nobody answers the door they will pop it through the letter box. Please do complete the survey as it is the best way to help quantify the requirements of our village which in turn will support the Neighbourhood Plan for future developments. If you have any queries over the questionnaire or problems completing it, contact details will be provided with the questionnaire. Oliver Last
News & Views Reflex Martial Arts Fitness is just one component of our lives that we should all try to fulfill, in my line of work as a martial arts instructor I have listened to many reasons why folks cannot exercise but the bottom line is our body’s needs to keep moving regularly to stay strong and healthy. My name is Adrian Poulter and I have been training and teaching Martial Arts for 37 years, I still run four times a week as well as my teaching commitments which all go towards keeping my weight down and my fitness level up. I realize that not all people have as much free time as me but a regular walk or bike ride will do wonders for weight loss and general wellbeing. I have around three people contact me a week about joining our classes, may be one out of the three will make it to a training session. When talking to prospective students they mostly have the same worries such as “I am not fit and won’t keep up” or “I don’t know anyone there”. These fears are understandable and real to children and adults alike, so we always make sure that new students are given a warm welcome from everybody at the club and have all the support they need to make them feel comfortable. Kickboxing is a very popular sport and we teach this at Eye Hartismere High School “Mondays”, Diss Infant School “Wednesday” & Harleston Jays Green Center “Friday”. Kickboxing is a high energy activity and we have people of all ages taking part and surpassing our expectations each week. Kung Fu is a self-defense system that uses strikes with the hands, elbows, knees and feet. You will also learn how to escape from all types of grabs and holds plus it is a lot of fun. We hold regular kickboxing and Kung Fu gradings as well as run our own light continuous kickboxing shows which are always very busy events. Stradbroke Cricket Club It seems unusual, planning for next year, when the leaves are still green, the grass keeps growing, temperatures range from mild to warm, & flowers are still in full bloom, yet the cricket season has been over for 6 weeks. A line was drawn under 2014 with a low key Presentation Evening at the Queen’s Head, as the Cricket Club set their sights no higher than survival. What was evident, however, was a genuine sense of pride that the members & players can feel that a corner is being turned. As far as the presentations go, it was a Josh Franklin-Mann benefit. Voted Vikings ‘Player of the Year’, he was also ‘Leading Run Scorer’ for the Vikings with 231 runs, & ‘Leading Wicket Taker’ for both the Vikings (19 wickets) & the A Team (15 wickets). The relentless Alan Barker stopped a clean sweep, his 289 runs securing the A Team ‘Leading Run Scorer’ trophy, earning enough votes to be ‘Player of the Year’. The ‘Flag Deck Trophy’ for ‘Clubman of the Year’ looks at other qualities within the Club. Tom Smith deservedly won this for his unstinting work with the Junior Section, while Richard Pierce-Saunderson has another ‘Champagne Moment’ trophy on his mantelpiece thanks to his direct hit run out & excessive celebration of the fact. It is memories like those that make the winter shorter. Oh, and the mild weather, of course. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Badminton Club The badminton season is now under way and Tuesday's nights are being well attended. It's great to see some of the younger members return this season and even better to see that their skill levels are improving too. The competitive season has now started for the men in the Ipswich & District league. Ipswich & District League Won. Hamlets B. 3.5 - 5.5 Stradbroke. Won. Stradbroke 6 - 3 Kesgrave B. After narrowly missing out on promotion last season the team was keen to get things off on the right foot. The first match was a tough away game at Hamlets B who are newly promoted to division 5. The second match was at home to Kesgrave B who produced another difficult game. The match was tied after 6 games but the men got got maximum points from the last 3 games to win 6-3. There will be no badminton on Tuesday 2nd of December. If you would like to get in contact with the club, then please email stradbrokebc@outlook.com George Chaplin

Stradbroke Youth FC Stradbroke Youth FC - Clean sweep for all three teams on Sunday 19th Oct. U12s – Stradbroke 7 Stowupland 2, U14s – Stradbroke 6 Diss Town 3, U16s – Stradbroke 1 Brandon 0 Match Report - U14s Stradbroke Youth v Diss Town This was only the second competitive game since we were drubbed by Framlingham in a pre-season friendly. Diss had a good reputation and had a strong right wing section which caused us many problems in the first half. Jordan Dexter and Rupert Tayor were constantly under pressure in the first 10min. This pressure led to a penalty award which was duly converted putting us 1-0 down. This seemed to lift Stradbroke and after several good attempts on goal Giles Tuley with his usual panache drifted past one defender and slid the ball in the corner of the net. A few minutes later, Keiren Harvey from a run down the left, cut inside and hit a great first time shot which left keeper standing. Keiren's corners continued to give Diss a lot of trouble and from one, Ben Brown got a little toe punt and scored his first goal of the season. In the second half, Diss came back strongly. Our defense opened up and allowed a clear shot to which Jack Smith (Smithy) stood no chance. This put us in a vulnerable position and we were under a bit of pressure until George Tooley came to the rescue. Another excellent corner from Keiren was met by the unexpected head of George Tooley who scored his first goal for the club to rapturous applause from both the spectators and the players. Diss countered again and brought out a brilliant diving save from Smithy only for him to see the ball bounce to an opponent who duly rolled it into the net. Keiren who was always much involved then scored direct from a corner and the killer punch came a few minutes from time when Giles, who was already exhausted, ran 50yds to chase a ball he should never have got, rounded the keeper almost on the by-line and slid the ball at an impossible angle into the far corner of the net – a definite candidate for goal of the season. MotM Brandon Oaks for his excellent runs down the right and strong defensive work. Don Darling
Letters to the Editor While I was out walking my dog this morning I came across a sight that astonished me. Generally in the village itself, and in the surrounding countryside there seems to be very little litter, which I think is thanks to most responsible people taking their rubbish home with them or putting it in a bin. Similarly as dog owners we all know that picking up dog poo is part of the deal when it comes to owning a dog. There are people of course who couldn't give a hoot about anybody else, be they adults or children - and they let their dog poo on the pavement or footpath, or right beside the footpath, and make no effort at all to pick it up in a bag. These people shouldn't be allowed to own a dog because they're clearly not responsible enough. Thankfully, despite a few incidents of dog poo on pavements this does seem pretty rare. This is with the exception of the footpath next to Doggetts heading off New Street - unaffectionately known in our house as dog poo alley. It seems that people drag their dogs up the road to this, the first piece of grass they come to, they let their dog poo and they don't bother picking it up..... presumably because it's by a field or something so doesn't count. This is made even more outrageous when you consider there's a red dog poo bin right there! Recently, I've noticed however that there doesn't seem to be as much poo there. I stupidly assumed that the irresponsible people that were letting their dog poo where people walk had suddenly become responsible or had a crisis of conscience and were putting their dogs poo in the bin. So as I started, while I was out walking my dog this morning, up this stretch of footpath, I noticed a crisp packet stuck in the hedge. I picked it up and whacked in it a (clean) dog poo bag in my pocket. I then noticed a carrier bag in the bottom of the ditch, tied at one end. I carefully picked it up. Then I noticed another different type of bag hanging low down in the hedge where it had been thrown. Then another and another and another. You get the idea. I (carefully) pulled out 5 plastic bags of poo this morning and delivered them to the correct place - THE RED POO BIN. The bin in question was 20 meters away so it absolutely astounds me that some people are thoughtful and responsible enough to pick up their dogs poo, and even tie the bag up...only to throw it, now in a completely environmentally unfriendly plastic bag, in the hedge or ditch - when there's a big red poo bin 20 meters back. These people - if you're reading this you know who you are - are the people that obviously don't give a single hoot about this village, the environment and countryside we all share, or anyone else apart from themselves. They're also lazy..... So, this is call to all the responsible dog owners and walkers and villagers - we should confront and name and shame anyone not disposing of their pets poo in the correct place. I know I will. We owe it to our fellow villagers, and ourselves, to keep this nice place nice. And So to Bed A mild October has meant that we are still harvesting crops late into the year. This week I have had a huge bag of chillis, aubergines, potatoes, carrots, parsnips and even strawberries. All good things will however come to an end, and it's time to think about putting the non productive parts of my allotment to bed for the winter. There are several ways of reducing winter weed growth and making life easier in the spring time. Most ideas involve covering the soil with something to suppress the weeds. The most common appears to be black plastic sheeting. This suppresses weeds very effectively, but personally I can't face covering my lovely soil with plastic. The soil is alive and I don't want to favour anaerobic (oxygen hating) bacteria over those that need oxygen. Black fabric is a breathable alternative albeit more expensive. It will suppress some weeds but is not as effective at killing perennial weeds such as couch grass. The fabric is also loved by slugs who will use its underside as a honeymoon hotel. Yech! So for my plot I am going to try a bit of lasagne gardening. This involves covering the resting areas with cardboard, then covering this with a layer of manure and compost. The idea being that as the cardboard softens, worms will pull the compost and manure down and begin to mix it into the earth. Weeds will be partly suppressed (I hope) and everything will work with nature and not against it. The gloomier tabloids are predicting a cold winter, but this can be to the gardeners benefit, hard frosts will help break up the soil, and can reduce disease levels. It is always amazing to see the allotments appear so dead in the winter months and spring back into life in April as the soil starts to warm. I am looking forward to some chilly evenings in front of my fire, curled up with a glass of wine and a seed catalogue. Gill Palmer I have been sent some lovely recipes and a good tip from a lovely fellow called Ray Francis who lives in Stradbroke. Tip - Green tomatoes picked in autumn as the weather cools will ripen more quickly if placed in a cardboard box with a ripe apple. The apple gives off ethylene gas which is a ripening agent. Onion sauce - fry a large chopped onion in 1oz/25g of butter until soft but not brown. Stir in 1oz/25g of plain flour, half pint of milk (250ml) and some salt and pepper. Stir over a low heat until the sauce thickens and boils. Cook gently for five minutes. Corn on the cob with bacon - cook this dish for supper and serve at once to avoid toughening the corn. For four portions, 4 cobs sweet corn, salt, 4 rashers streaky bacon, butter Prepare a moderately hot oven (200c/gas mark 6). Remove leaves and silk from cobs and trim stem ends. Place cobs in a large covered saucepan in boiling salted water and boil for 2 minutes. Drain well. Remove rind and bone from bacon and spread a little butter on each rasher. Wrap one around each cob. Place in a shallow oven proof dish and cook in the oven for 20 minutes. Tasty seasonal recipes like these are always welcome, as are any pearls of wisdom. We look forward to hearing about any little anecdotes as well. I would love to hear from you. Helen Pleasance
News & Views Watch out, BIG Ed's about... You can't miss them. Smiling, grinning and grumping at you as you drive towards Stradbroke on the Laxfield Rd, or B1117 from Laxfield direction. As you sweep round the bend, there they are - the 3 Big Eds. They appeared almost overnight in early September from 3 large poplar tree stumps. Now they are a feature of our local landscape - and they have names! - Happy, Cheeky & Grumpy! They are the work of Tim Page, local Chainsaw Sculptor from down the road in Eye. He told Stradbroke Monthly : 'I couldn't resist 3 big tree stumps by the roadside. They were just waiting to be turned into something to make people smile. I got so many waves, hoots and thumbs-up from passing cars as I was carving - it was cheering stuff! I hope the people of Stradbroke like their new neighbours.' At the end of September, as many readers will be aware, Parliament was recalled to debate whether the United Kingdom should join with our international partners and intervene with air strikes against the terrorist organisation ISIL (Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant). Parliament is only recalled to discuss the most serious and urgent issues of the day. ISIL present not only a threat across the Middle East but a threat to the British people at home and abroad. We must remember that ISIL has already murdered two British hostages and is threatening the life of another. The threat we face from ISIL is very different to ones this country has faced before. They are well funded, backed by billions of dollars, and have a formidable arsenal of modern weapons, along with the ability to use them. ISIL also has a complete disregard for human life; we have seen what they are prepared to do broadcast across the internet and social media. In a short space of time ISIL has spread across parts of Iraq and Syria. It controls an area larger than the size of Great Britain. If we do nothing, they will continue to spread their tentacles of fear and destruction. Parts of the Lebanon have already faced attacks from ISIL terrorists. Unchecked we will face a terrorist caliphate stretching from the Eastern Mediterranean to the borders of Turkey and beyond. The air action already taken by our French and American allies has made a difference. The lives of many Christians, Yazidis and other minorities have been saved. Without our allies’ help they would have fallen into the hands of ISIL. Without continued military intervention I do not believe ISIL will be defeated. ISIL are currently fighting on several fronts, in Iraq, Syria and against the Kurds. The Iraqi Government have asked for help and the Iraqi Foreign Minister wrote to the United Nations Security Council asking for Military assistance. The Iraqi Prime Minister repeated that request to our Prime Minister, David Cameron, when he attended the recent United Nations General Assembly. With our European partners we have already been supplying equipment directly to the Kurdish forces and our Tornado and surveillance aircraft have already been helping with intelligence gathering and logistics to support American attacks on ISIL in Iraq. There is support amongst our Arab partners for action against ISIL with Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates backing recent American strikes against ISIL. As the Prime Minister said when addressing the United Nations General Assembly, this is “a fight you cannot opt out of”. We cannot abandon large numbers of people to live in fear of their lives, condemned to die because of their faith or political beliefs. I hold regular constituency advice surgeries locally to help people who have problems. Stradbroke online Stradbroke online has now been live for about 6 months. It was adopted by the Parish Council in August as their official conduit for information about Stradbroke. As a village website, it is important we provide a relevant and comprehensive source of information about our village. We are therefore now reviewing the content and layout of the site to see how we can improve its value to the community. In particular we would like the various clubs, societies and other organisations that are mentioned, either directly or indirectly, on the website to check their respective pages and let us know what needs to be either, added, deleted or changed. The website is for the benefit of the community and if you would like to promote your organisation more widely then we will be only too pleased to create additional pages and content for you. You provide the material and we will do the rest. Alternatively if you would like to be able to add your own content to the site we can provide the necessary training and you could then manage your own pages directly. Finally in addition to updating the content, we are constantly looking at ways to improve the look and feel of the website. If you have any suggestions in this direction or would like to help in any way then please let us know. Don Darling, Roger Turkington, Gerald Jenkins (email: editors@stradbroke.info)
