Village Family Service - All Saints & Baptist Churches on 4th October at 10:30am at All Saints Church. Everyone welcome. VISITORS AT CAMEO LUNCH CLUB We welcomed two sets of visitors to our August Lunch: Jack and Dawn from Laxfield shared their holidays experiences including a visit to the Farne Islands where Jack photographed the bird life. The amazing antics of the terns, and the strutting puffins featured in Jack’s record from that beautiful outcrop of rock known as the Farne Islands. Dawn provided music for some of the older hymns and children’s songs which we sang together reminding many guests of their earlier years in Sunday school. Thanks Dawn & Jack. ‘What’s that car here for?’ was the question as people arrived for lunch. Stephen of Mann’s Vintage Cars brought along his 1948 Rover which is hired for weddings and other special events. The idea was that whoever answered the quiz correctly was given a lift home in Stephen’s stately carriage. Thanks Stephen. Our next Cameo Lunch will be on Wednesday 9th September, we have room for more guests. If you enjoy good food and would like to meet new friends please give us a call. WHAT’S IT WORTH? At present our T.V. schedules are awash with programmes about antiques: Antiques Road Show, Bargain Hunt, and Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, to name just three. Many people watch the lunch time Bargain Hunt where two teams of two people, the reds and the blues, assisted by an expert, purchase three items which they hope will give them a profit when later sold at auction. The excitement is raised when the so called experts or the auctioneer get it totally wrong by dismissing an item as poor quality or of little value which later sells for a considerable profit, equally items which are considered to be of high value often fail to achieve their expected price. The auction often leaves the experts looking foolish, embarrassed and out of touch with real values. But as all country folk know, “The value of anything is only what someone else is willing to pay”. So we ask the question. What is the value of a human life? The Bible tells us that God values human life so highly that He gives us His command not to destroy it. “Thou shalt not kill”. Furthermore God is so concerned with humanity that He commands us to love our neighbour as we love ourselves and to look after those who cannot care for themselves. God places such a high value on humanity that Jesus came into this world, a real person in real time to pay the price for our wrongdoing. The value is only what someone is willing to pay! In God’s sight your value is so great that Jesus gave His life for you. Details: John Ling 388751 (Church Elder) Jackie Hughes 384112 (Church Administrator)

All Saints – A message from Rev. Susan Dear Friends & Neighbours, Someone asked me recently how I coped when things didn’t go the way I had hoped or when things went wrong. I think I gave a rather vague answer because without explaining about my faith it is a bit difficult, but the truth is that somewhere deep within my being, there is a certainty that God loves us and wants the best for us and we can trust him. Then this morning I was at prayers and someone asked what was going on in my life and I told them a few things that are a bit challenging at the moment and how tired I was it being Thursday the last day of my week before a day off. However, a soon as I spoke I felt a daft grin on my face that lasted throughout the prayers, and these words came to mind, “the joy of the Lord is your strength”. I realised that this is how I cope with whatever life throws at me; knowing that God is good and he fills my life with joy and peace even when circumstances would dictate otherwise. In a recent sermon I said that God through Jesus never said he would take us out of difficult and painful situations, but he would be with us in them. Knowing that the Lord is with you and cares about you makes all the difference, that turns to joy in our hearts and that joy gives us the strength to carry on. Joy and laughter are good medicine, I hope you can know the joy of the Lord, but even if you can’t at this time, look for joy in another’s company whether that be a friend, neighbour or pet and allow yourself to see the funny side of things, encouraging laughter in your own life and in others. I think you will feel better and maybe when you look again at any worries you have you will feel able to cope with them or have the strength to seek help. God bless, Susan

Everyone Active Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre Everyone Active Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre is this year celebrating its first National Award which it won at the UKActive Matrix FLAME awards. Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre won the Leisure Centre of the Year (Streamline Category) out of 100’s of other clubs within the UK. The Award was won on the recommendations of its members who were asked to go on line and fill in a questionnaire where they judged certain aspects of the facility they use. The site also received mystery visits and calls from the organisers of the event and underwent a site visit from an inspector who spoke to random members throughout their visit to ask them questions about the facility and their experiences. This isn’t the first award Stradbroke Swim and Fitness Centre has won, since the gym facility was opened back in 2011 the site has won regional awards from the Members Choice Health Club Awards, winning Gold in 2012, Bronze in 2013 and Silver in 2014 in the East of England category. Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre has always prided itself on its customers experience and these awards just prove that they deliver a high quality experience to the local community as shown by member feedback. Everyone Active Stradbroke Swim & Fitness Centre would like to thank all of its members for their continued support and for helping make us the best leisure centre in the UK. Maria Smith

Life in the Legion The highlight of the branch year is the forthcoming Concert “Re-Live The Relief” to be held at Stradbroke High School on Saturday, 5th. September, starting at 7.30 pm. For only £5 the evening’s entertainers will be “Nigel Boy Syer, Olly Day, Maria Willis and the Colchester Pipes and Drums”. We will be having a draw and refreshments will be available. Helping us that evening will be “The Royal British Legion Bikers” and the Diss 1070 Squadron A.T.C. Cadets. I do hope it will be well supported and an enjoyable evening will be had by all. A small subcommittee has been formed to organise this event. Instead of the usual guest speaker our July meeting heard Ken Rowbottom, the new County Vice-Chairman from the Fressingfield Branch spoke on the recent National Royal British Legion Conference held at Southport. He stated that Suffolk County again won the “Maurice Cup” for being the best-run county in our great ex service organisation with a record amount of wins. Branch Treasurer Bernard Mills presented the branch accounts for the year ending in June. He also explained the new method of paying annual subscriptions for those members previously paying by cash. The next Branch meeting will be on Thursday, September 10th at Laxfield King’s Head starting at 11.30 am when the guest speaker will be Lt Col Chris Taylor from Shipdham (Norfolk) his subject being “The Gurkha Welfare Trust”. Members and friends please attend if you are able (Our Branch with nearby Fressingfield are the only two in our area “H” Group) left. Michael Burton (Branch Chairman)
W.I. On a warm summer’s evening we welcomed Wendy Jary from Federation to our Summer Meeting, the most relaxed meeting of the year. Members arrived to be greeted with a refreshing glass of punch, and the sight of prettily laid tables decked with beautiful garden roses, and surrounding a centrepiece of magical woodland fairies. The fairies were a delight, in iridescent colours of every hue, and the setting was superb. It really set the scene for the evening. The committee as in past years served a buffet supper, this year of cold meats and salads followed by an array of delicious desserts and coffee. There was no need for speakers or entertainment the hall just buzzed with happy chatter and laughter. Wendy Jary our guest for the evening gave a very warm vote of thanks to everyone for inviting her, and to everyone concerned in creating such a lovely evening. Special thanks to the committee for all their endeavours. August Our monthly meetings are far from quiet, but at our August meeting an air of calm could clearly be detected, all due to Hattie with her cello. After welcoming members and visitors and with the business completed, Dorothy introduced us to our speaker the musician Harriet Bennett. She was a joy to listen to. Coming from a musical family, (her parents both played in the famous Halle Orchestra) she told us in a lively and humorous way of her life steeped in music, and her love of the cello. The cello had once belonged to her father and was often played by Sir John Barbirolli the conductor of the Halle Orchestra to demonstrate what he required from his musicians. Her love of music has taken all over the world, and she interspersed her talk by playing well known pieces by Schubert Tchaikovsky and Saint- Saens, to name but a few. As Hattie played the calm descended, and members were clearly moved by her music. Hattie, who lives in Felixstowe with her talented musical family nearby, organises many festivals. Her ‘Music of Felixstowe ‘Festival is now in its fifteenth season. We all loved Hattie. Prue Rush gave a moving vote of thanks. In September we welcome Peter Banham with his talk on ‘Old Sayings and Origins’ Why not join us for what promises to be a most enjoyable evening. Gill Bird

Stradbroke High School Goodbye to a Truly Inspirational Teacher, Interview with Mrs Phillips When did you first decide to teach art? When I was in year 11 at school, I wasn’t really thinking about teaching art at all until one day in the classroom Mrs Lord who taught us art, said she thought I would make a good art teacher. She was such an inspirational person, so creative and encouraging that she really inspired me; I thought how lovely it was to be in her classroom and I felt I would like to be able to do the same thing, teaching the subject I was, and still am, passionate about. I stayed in touch with Mrs Lord until very recently – she was truly creative and encouraging and a great role model for me. How did you go about it? I did ‘A’ Levels and went to Teacher Training College in Hertfordshire for 3 years and I loved it: I learned about the theory of teaching and educational thinking, as well as how to teach art and I have to say the training I received was excellent; especially learning about the psychology of how and why children learn. It really helped me when I first became a teacher at Plume school in Maldon, Essex 36 years ago. There were 1800 pupils in that school and it was a brilliant place to start my career. I then became head of year 7 which meant I got to know the pupils even better and it helped me to realise how much other aspects of their lives affected how well they learned in school. When did you join Stradbroke? I joined in 1994 to teach art and instantly loved the friendly ethos of the place. I can honestly say that this school is the perfect size; we get to know the pupils really well and the teachers are very supportive, so coming to work from the bungalow on site has been like seeing people in my family every day. When I was ill recently, I cannot tell you how overwhelmed I was with the good wishes I received from everyone – it just made my recovery so much quicker – it meant so much. I will miss that contact with everyone but I do have lots of things lined up to do once I have retired. What is the most unusual piece of art you can remember from your years of teaching Stradbroke pupils? Well there have been lots of fabulous pieces, including an 8ft tall mushroom, a papier mache Boris Johnson and this year a life size deer created by Caleb, out of willow, but I think the most unusual was a dress crafted out of steel panels. The pupil, Rosie, actually modelled the dress herself – she put it on (and it fitted) and it was very beautiful and carefully made by shaping the panels over a long period of time. It achieved an A* and not surprisingly, Rosie went on to have a very promising artistic career in photography. So what is the secret of success in art? I try to encourage everyone to find what they enjoy doing and to incorporate lots of different ideas for media they might use; whether like Jack Gionis this year, it involves guitars and light bulbs, or willow, wood, fabric, plaster. Whatever it is, I try to encourage pupils to have an open mind and do whatever they feel they are happy with and works for them, and then I can stand back as their ideas develop into some wonderful art that represents their thoughts and feelings surrounding the theme. How did your role change when you became Deputy Head? I studied for an MA when I first became Deputy Head because after years of teaching it seemed sensible to refresh my knowledge about learning. That proved to be really useful and in school, whenever there have been challenges I have thought of ways to get around those challenges rather than let them stop me getting something done or achieved – especially on behalf of the pupils. When I became Deputy Head I had to put those skills into use more often. I hope I have a very positive ‘glass half full’ attitude which means I don’t give up even when things look like they might not have a solution – I try to find another way to achieve what has to be done. What are your plans for retirement? I have a lot of projects I would like to complete and these include dress-making and making our home in Norfolk more comfortable. Then I hope to run a few art classes local to where I will be living just to keep up doing what I love. It will be lovely to have the time to do the things I have been planning to do instead of always focusing on what I have to do and in a very structured timetable. Trevor and I have been very fortunate to have shared some very happy times at Stradbroke High School and I shall watch with interest the school’s progress in the coming years and I wish everyone the very best. Friends of Stradbroke High School – Summer 2015 update Our recent car boot sale was a total success, with over 40 stalls attending and lots of bacon and egg rolls consumed with copious amounts of tea and soft drinks. We raised over £500. The BBQ at the Stradbroke Festifull was once again supported by the Friends of the School and kept everyone fed and watered for the weekend with delicious pancakes during the family disco on the Saturday night. We raised over £350. This year the Friends have decided to support the High School Sports day, with £1000 spent on new equipment, refreshments and inspiring new awards. Nigel Brown

Stradbroke Primary School By the time you read this, everyone will have had their summer break and a new school year will have begun, with children excited about new classes and learning. We now have five classes in school rather than our previous four and are delighted to have Mrs Keeble with us to teach in our new Class 2. This month our Year 4 and 5 children have a 3 day residential visit to The Horstead Centre in Norwich with their peers from All Saints Laxfield, where outdoor activities including canoeing, bushcraft, climbing and low ropes are on the agenda-along with a barbecue and campfire. A great experience! We are always pleased to welcome members of the Church and community to lead our assemblies and the children love to take part in stories and activities linked to our value for life, which, this term is ‘Friendship’. Our ‘Open the Book’ team always provide an exciting approach to learning, as do Rev Susan and Pastors Tim and Adam. Our theme this term is ‘Other Worlds’ and we will be celebrating European Day of Languages by looking at life and cultures across the world. Years 4, 5 and 6 will be exploring the world of books and poetry when they visit Snape Maltings to work with poet, Kit Wright. We will also be having a special ‘Other Worlds’ Day during the term. Our annual visit to London with our older children, will also take place in November – a whole new world for some! As I mentioned last month, our Harvest Festival is to take on a new feel. We are planning, after our service in Church, to host our own ‘Farmer’s and Craft Market’. The children and parents will be running stalls where they will be selling a wide variety of homemade, home grown produce – we already have local honey, homemade chutney and other goods, garden plants including herbs and much more. We will be growing and making in school! Do you have produce you would like to bring along and sell? Would you like to come along and join us? If you would like to run a stall or come and see what we have on offer, we would like to welcome you on Thursday 8th October. The market will run from 2.30pm. Please contact the school office 01379 384415 if you are interested in booking a table. Mrs L Walsh, Head of School
Stradbroke Archive and Records Association-SARA New Year Day 1945, The Times newspaper reports under the heading ‘Mr Churchill and New Times - Year that should bring Victory’ a quote by Sir Winston Churchill who was addressing the Primrose League: “Today we are entering upon a year that should bring us victory in Europe. Before many months have passed the evil gang that has too long dominated that unhappy continent will be wiped out. Until that end has been achieved there can be no return to our normal habits. It would be tragic folly to prolong, by any slackening in the last phase, the agony that a megalomaniac ambition has loosed upon the world.” The British Legion is celebrating the 70th anniversary of WW2 victory year and Stradbroke Archive and Records Association also remembers the War and the six service men who did not return. SARA has deposited the Stradbroke WW2 Roll of Honour at Suffolk Records Office and have obtained from them a copy which will eventually be displayed at Stradbroke Library. We have changed our monthly Archive Sunday to Archive Saturday, the next morning being on SATURDAY 26th September between10am and noon. Whether you are looking for family history or village history we will be happy to look through our resources and those offered by Suffolk Libraries. Ann Readman, SARA
There's nothing quite like a good cup of tea ... Especially if it raises money for a really good cause! That's why we're inviting you to host a Tea for RNIB party this summer. Join hundreds of people across the UK raising money to support blind and partially sighted people. Call 0845 345 0054 and we'll send you everything you need to get your Tea for RNIB party started. You just need to invite your friends to your house, garden, street or anywhere else you fancy. There's a serious side to the party. Did you know that in the next 15 minutes, someone in the UK will be told: "You are losing your sight"? But right now, we can only reach one in three of the people who need our help the most. Your support can help more blind and partially sighted people to face the future with confidence. You could support us by asking guests to donate for a slice of cake and a cup of tea, selling raffle tickets for donated prizes, asking for donations to guess the number of sweets in a jar or selling home crafts or yummy delights. Remember, it's easy and fun to run a Tea for RNIB party. There's loads more ideas in our free party pack, just call 0845 345 0054 or visit www.rnib.org.uk/tea-rnib to order yours today. We'll also then be able to put you in touch with Hayley, your local fundraiser who will be able to answer all your questions and help in any way she can. Radio Stradbroke Stradisphere 2015 seems a lifetime ago, but is still fresh in the memories of Radio Stradbroke. Somehow, everything came together, making it a memorable weekend. There is not room to thank everyone, but the 20 acts were terrific, the sun shone all the time, & a big crowd made the event. Stradisphere is the cake, Summer Music Nights are the bread & butter. Despite the studio undergoing re-decoration, Radio Stradbroke DJs still produce quality shows. September sees two more, Wednesday 9th 20:00 – 23:00 DJ Huggy presents “Monsters of Rock”. The best of British: Queen v Led Zeppelin v The Who. If you like all/any/none of these bands, tune in to listen to a musical history of three giants of music. Wednesday 23rd 20:00 – 23:00 DJ Richard Pierce presents “Eclection Night”. The usual mix of modern & classic pop music accompanied by Richard’s thoughtful stance on the subject. Log on Michael Hugman to www.radiostradbroke.co.uk

Stradbroke Calendar 2016 The deadline for photos for next years Calendar is fast approaching. A wide range of photos have already been submitted during the spring and summer months and these can be seen in the gallery section of the village website at Stradbroke Online. Our aim is to have a vote in October on the best images to be used for the main pages. Printing and production can then be done before the end of the year, making the calendars available for Christmas. All funds raised from Calendar sales will go to FOASS in support of repairs to the Church. If you have any photos that you would like to submit for inclusion into the Calendar then there is still time. Send them to Photos@Stradbrokeonline.org.uk or contact either Margaret Jenkins (384825) or Carol Darling (388098) for more details. Carol Darling

Stradbroke Allotment and Gardeners’ Association Autumn Notes By the time you read this September will be with us and autumn starting to make its presence felt. We are all busy picking crops from our summer plants but it isn't too late to plant things to keep the allotment productive for a bit longer. Pak Choi can be sown now to provide an autumn supply of salad leaves, radish can still be sown, and for a quick salad return try transplanting the mixed salad leaves sold in supermarkets as growing salad, they will quickly produce a good supply of delicious leaves. It's the perfect time to sow garlic and onions, and to tuck a few daffodil or tulip bulbs in dull corners to create a splash of colour in Spring. Don't forget to collect seeds from your flowering plants. Californian Poppy's and poached egg plants don't really like being transplanted but the seed can be sown now for a lovely display next year. And it's time to look at catalogues for fruit bushes for next year. This year those of us with raspberry canes had a fantastic crop. If you choose summer fruiting raspberries they won't produce till 2017, but if you select the Autumn fruiting varieties (which I think are tastier) you will have crops next year. Happy Gardening, Gill Palmer Recipe I promised to give my courgette chutney recipe to everyone, so have some fun making this delicious chutney. You will need 1 kilo of courgettes, any type. 2 onions, and 2 tablespoons of salt. Slice thin, put with the salt and mix well, leave for 2 hours. Rinse well and drain. Into a heavy large pot put; the courgettes and onions, 3 cups of sugar, 2 cups white vinegar, 4 teaspoons of mustard seed, 2 teaspoons celery salts, 3 teaspoons turmeric. Bring to the boil and cook for 5 minutes. Then simmer for 15 minutes. Thicken with a heaped tablespoon of cornflour. Let cool for a few minutes and place into heated and sterilised jars. We have a lovely little community up at the allotments and all but half a plot has now been taken. I know that a couple of people will be leaving us in the New Year so we will have a bit more available then. I will keep you posted as to availability. Helen Pleasance
Are you affected by changes in Suffolk Home Care? Over the last few month people receiving care in Suffolk will have received a letter advising them that from September 2015 their home care provider will be changing. This is because Suffolk County council have awarded Support to Live at Home contracts to a smaller group of providers and given these providers a geographical area that they are responsible for. If you are in the area for a specified provider, that provider automatically becomes your new care company. So what happens to those people that have been receiving care for many years and have built up relationships with their care company and their care workers? These are their options: 1. Move to new provider and Social Services will continue to pay for their care and take care of 2. Take out a Direct Payment where the money they are entitled to will be paid in to their bank account and they will then organise their own care and arrange to pay their own bills. 3. Set up an Independent Service Fund (ISF) with the company that they choose to provide their care. This means the Care provider will manage the personal budget for their client and effectively pay themselves. There does appear to be choice for the individual to still choose who provides their care. Or is there? Imagine the situation Doris, aged 94, is in. She currently receives care from that is paid for by Social Services. She is happy with the care that she receives and has her regular carers that she knows and loves. She has now been told that her care provider is changing and as you can imagine is very distressed by this. Who will her carers be? What is this company like? Will they know how to look after her in the way she wants? She has been told that she can use her personal budget, but at the age of 94 and with no family to help support her to do this she does not feel that this will be right for her. She could take out an ISF and use that with a company of her choice but again is unsure of what this all means. So does Doris have choice? If you or someone you know has found themselves in this situation you can get advice from Social Services www.suffolk.gov.uk/homecare, Contact.STLH@suffolk.gov.uk By phone: 0345 600 2077. Stradbroke Cricket Club Dew in the mornings, nights pulling in. It is that horrible realisation that the cricket season is reaching its denouement. For the Vikings, this is particularly sad, given that they have won five of their last eight matches, lifting them from bottom up to mid table. The bowlers have been the key. At time of going to press the leading wicket takers are James Gilbee (51), Billy Freeman (31), & Owen Morgan (26). Runs have been harder to come by, except for notable innings from Matt Wise & Josh Franklin-Mann. The A Team have not replicated these efforts. Despite some classy knocks from Alan Barker & David Allum, relegation was confirmed last week. Player availability has not helped the cause. Probably the strongest XI fielded all season travelled to Cambridge for the annual fixture against Liverpool University, which ended in a tense draw. Add this to a tie v BT, & a one wicket defeat at Rumburgh, it has never been dull! September promises to be eventful, with the President Match on the 5th, & finally, the first Ladies fixture on the 6th, incorporating the junior presentations. With 3 of the Under 15s now league regulars, the future looks brighter, despite “Turbo 10” failing to catch the imagination. Off the field, the wet weather failed to dampen spirits at the recent coffee morning. Pat & Mike Grigg had every eventuality covered (literally). Thanks to those villagers who attended. £306 was raised for club funds. Keep supporting your local cricket club. Michael Hugman
Stradbroke Football Club The season will soon be on us starting the league on 5th September. We have had two friendlies, firstly v. Needham Market Phoenix winning 9 – 7 (on a small pitch), then we played under lights at Debenham losing 2 – 0. We have now purchased new goal posts for the coming year. The August Bingo raised £70 for club funds. The Mary Ellis next one is on 11th September, 7.30pm at The Community Centre.
Stradbroke & District Bowls Club Nearly all the Club tournaments have now been played. Since our last report the Les Parker Cup has been decided and winners were John Dann and Jennifer Chetwynd, the runners-up were Terry Bannon and Peter Chetwynd. Stradbroke Youth Football Club Stradbroke Youth FC - A new start. A lot has happened with SYFC since last season. We have a new Chairperson in Rusty Smith and a new Club Secretary with Jayne Cooke. This means the club is now run entirely by the parents, as wished by the founders Mike Readman and Don Darling. We have 3 teams this year U8s, U13s and U15s with a group of 9, 10 and 11 year olds who take part in training. If any child wants to come along to training then it is on Thursdays starting at 5:30pm at the Community Centre playing fields. The Club also has a Girls training session for all ages on Wednesdays at the High School. We are looking forward to using a new floodlight MUGA at the High School later in the year, thanks to a grant and the donations from MSDC, SYFC the PC. News & Views cont. Superfast Broadband Superfast broadband now available in Stradbroke – but it’s not all good news BT and some other telecoms providers are now taking orders for Superfast broadband and by the time you read this there will be a few who are already connected. Unfortunately not everyone in the village is able to get the service. As reported before, according to Suffolk County Council and BT most of the northern half of the village are outside the coverage area. All of Westhall and Ash Plough miss out. In theory there should be no reason why BT cannot offer service to these areas all of the lines go directly back to the exchange in Queen Street and BT has to do is ‘jumper’ (connect a pair of wires) from one of the new green cabinets outside to the other. As part of the Neighbourhood Plan we are looking at the whole issue of digital connectivity and its impact on our local business and the social and economic prosperity of the village. Most of us realise that good communications are vital but despite ‘warm words’ from our local and national government about the importance of the rural economy we are not seeing much action. Suffolk County Council has made a commitment to ensure 85% of the County can get Superfast (defined by SCC as a minimum speed of 25Mbps but UK government and the EU say 30Mbps) by the end of 2015. In my own case despite only living 500m from the exchange, BT can only offer a maximum speed of 38Mbps (Offcom estimate that I should get around 60Mbps). I imagine I’m probably one of the lucky ones but in order to watch BT’s new Ultra TV you need a minimum of 43Mbps so despite the long wait and huge sums of taxpayers money we’ve still not caught up with our urban counterparts! If you have ordered or are thinking of ordering Superfast broadband I do advise you to have a look on the website (www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk) for some more useful information about availability and trying to get a good deal and do let us know how you get on. If you live in Ash Plough or Westhall or your download speed is less than 25Mbps we want to know so we can pursue this further with SCC. We cannot guarantee success but at least we can try. SCC should be announcing the roll-out of Phase 2 of its programme soon, let’s hope Stradbroke is not last in the queue again. Roger Turkington, rogerturkington@suffolkonline.net
Stradbroke Play Park Project At the July Parish Council meeting the current play areas at Westhall and the Community Centre were discussed, having not changed much since they were first installed. With an ever increasing improvement of play equipment available to help children to learn, play, socialise and develop, the Parish Council voted to set up a working group, comprising of Ellie Wharton, Oliver Last and Don Darling. The objective of this working group is to look into upgrading the existing play areas to provide modern facilities for the village. To do this one of the first things is to undertake a resident survey because your views are extremely important to us. They will help guide us towards what improvements you would like done to the play park facilities in order to really benefit those who will use them. This will be a simple questionnaire which will be available shortly. In parallel the group is investigating a number of financing options as play equipment is an expensive business, these include grants, donations, and community fundraising. It is most likely to be a combination of all three that will help fund the project. You can see further details and follow progress of the project on the village website (Stradbroke Online) where all information will be posted. We would really like to hear from anyone within the village who would like to get involved with the project, so please feel free to contact any of us in the working group or feel free to have a chat with Ellie in the school playground. Would you like to Sponsor a Seat near Peter’s Pond? At the top of the Stradbroke Gardens, which is the name for the area which includes the Allotments, the Community Orchard and the Wildflower Meadow, there is quite a large pond. It has been donated to the Stradbroke Charitable Trust and thus to the Village for everyone to use by Peter & Maria Smith. The formalities for the transfer are now almost complete and so Stradbroke is legally about to have a splendid new public area for walks, picnics and for children to play. There is still a little landscaping and grass-sowing to be completed but within the next two months, it should all be ready. As part of the plans, there are to be four wooden seats overlooking the pond, two on each side. Two of these seats have already been offered to the Trust as a memorial to loved ones from Stradbroke who have recently passed away. On each there will be a small inscribed metal plaque. The Trust wonders if there are two others in the village who would like to sponsor such seats? In such a public place they need to be of sturdy construction and the cost of each will be in the region of £350/£400. The Trust will undertake to fix them firmly into place with concrete foundations and hidden bolts. If you would like to be involved with this project, would you please contact Peter Smith on 01379 384047. Gerald Jenkins

High speed broadband is one of the most important issues affecting the lives of people living in rural Suffolk both in their businesses and at home. I am always being contacted by Suffolk residents and businessmen who express their frustration with the unreliability and slow speed of broadband services. Broadband is an essential part of our lives in the 21st century and affects all aspects of it, from education and farming to wellbeing and health. As a result, I secured a key debate in Parliament on the issue of broadband in Suffolk. I was joined in the debate by my Suffolk parliamentary colleagues Peter Aldous, MP for Waveney, and Jo Churchill, MP for Bury St Edmunds in thanking Ed Vaizey, the Minister for Culture and the Digital Economy, for the part he has played in the work already done on the roll-out of superfast broadband. Suffolk has previously received £12 million from the Government as well as a further grant of £15 million from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and has led the way nationally to deliver faster broadband to very rural areas. However, there is still much more to be done, and I asked the Minister for his support in ensuring BT works with, and compliments the work of, the County Council’s Better Broadband for Sufolk programme who should be commended for the work that they have already done. The poor performance of BT, which has been slow to prioritise coverage of areas with poor broadband coverage, has been holding back the delivery of superfast broadband. In instances where the Better Broadband for Suffolk team could exceed timescales and other contractual parameters and deliver faster, BT has been limiting the delivery and this has been to the detriment of residents in Suffolk who have not received broadband in the timely manner they should expect. Farming and agriculture are the backbone of our rural economy but farmers have told me that they do not have the infrastructure connections to enable fast enough broadband to comply with online Government services, such as the new Common Agricultural Policy Information Service which requires our farmers to submit all the information online and have an email connection for communication. Poor broadband service is also affecting their ability to innovate and use new farm technology and software and meet with other regulation such as VAT, vehicle tax and animal tagging. I made it clear to the Minister that it is essential that the roll-out of superfast broadband must be linked with better mobile phone technology and improved mobile reception in our area. We all know that it is vital that people running rural businesses – for example, farmers needing satellite imaging on their combine harvesters – have broadband connectivitiy that is not just about fibre to the home, but broader in being linked online through a portable device, an issue which is intrinsically connected with mobile phone coverage and 4G. The lack of reliable mobile phone signal impacts on day to day business, welfare and safety issues and access to weather reports and emergency alerts for our farmers. I shall continue to push the Government for more funding and support to deliver superfast broadband for all residents of Suffolk, and especially for the 5% of residents that live in very rural Suffolk. They too should enjoy a fast, reliable, sustainable and future-proof solution as the other 95%, and I asked the Minister for his support to avoid creating a ‘digital divide’ between the 5% and the 95%. I was very pleased to hear from the Minister that he will investigate the behaviour of BT in its delivery of superfast broadband to ensure that they help to accelerate the roll-out rather than act as a handbrake. The Minister also agreed to update me on the outcomes of his investigations in the autumn and I will of course keep my constituents updated in my efforts to ensure that every home, farm, business, school and shop receives improved broadband services. It is now Parliamentary recess until September, which is far from a holiday for me. I enjoy this time when I can be at home in Suffolk on a full time basis, out and about locally, talking to people and visiting farms, shops and businesses.
