A place of new beginnings. We welcome you to join us. September Diary Sunday Services each week at 10.15 am September Speakers: 7th Rev G. Lee 14th J. Ling 21st N. We commence in September a seven session course entitled ‘The world we all want?’ How does the human longing for a better fairer world, fit into God’s great plan as revealed in the Bible? This course is open to all, Christian believer or the person just looking. Jackie’s report That time of year again! Many people have asked if I am still going to Ukraine in September! The answer is a resounding “yes”! This trip, with the ongoing situation there, seems to be even more important than before. The Widows and Widowers camp runs for two weeks with different guests each week. I will never forget last year, the people walking up the lane with their belonging in plastic carrier bags, greeting us with hugs and kisses and being so grateful at being invited to a 5 day holiday. Three meals a day, proper beds, hot showers and inside toilets, something that we just take for granted. The days consists of exercise, singing, Bible Studies, craft and lots of fun and laughter. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who have given me clothes for the poor, for the people who have knitted hats and baby clothes plus other items and for taking an interest in this missionary work that I have been able to do through Hope Now. Ukrainians have been literally thrown out of their homes in Crimea unable to take anything with them, and the local churches in Ukraine have been supporting these refugees by clothing them and giving them food. Everything that you have donated goes to people who really need them. There are no “middle men”. So thank you for your support. And, by the way the Zozulenka dance and singing group are coming in November so watch out for the adverts in the village later in the year. The Ukrainians have great faith in God. Maybe this is because they have so little. Amidst their poorness, the churches are full, and people sing and pray with a great fervour to the one who saves and provides their needs through the generosity of others, so once again thank you for your many gifts. Stradbroke All Saints Fundraising Committee We have been very busy the last two months. Pat Fill's coffee morning raised £122.20. Well done and thanks Pat. The village show raised £427.63. Many thanks to Roland for all his efforts and also the helpers. The Garage Trail on August 2nd raised £73. A pity some people decided to have an independent stall the same day. Many thanks to the stall holders who opened. Next the village Fete, a great success thanks to R and S Loxton for the use of the Rectory Garden. The committee worked very hard to ensure it was successful. Thank to everyone who looked after the stalls and to all who donated prizes. £777.19 was raised in 3 hours. A wonderful result. Thanks to David Streeter for transporting several items. Next event is the Harvest Supper on 19th September in the Community Centre. A hot meal and entertainment. Watch out for tickets. Lastly and the saddest part of my report. One of our ladies who served us so well until she was unable to come to meetings, passed away. She was so loyal and often gave items to sell. Barbara we shall miss you so much. We send our sympathy to her husband Tom and family and wish you well in the future. Mary Ellis
A Message from Rev Susan Dear Friends & Neighbours, Isn’t it amazing how music can touch our hearts and emotions and sometimes bring back memories? My husband Robin and I were watching and listening to a concert by Andrew Rieu and his orchestra. The music was wonderful, and as the camera caught different people you could see joy on their faces. Then someone with a wonderful voice sang Ava Maria; there were many people weeping as she sang, including me; it was the beauty of the voice and the emotion with which she sang. The following Sunday evening in church, as we sang a song I was reminded of a time over twenty years ago when someone had spoken some of the words from the chorus to me, which looking back was probably the beginning of my journey into the ministry. The words spoken to me were; freely, freely you have received, freely, freely give. Go in my name and because you believe others will know that I live. Sometimes we Christians feel guilty, perhaps because we think we have let God down by failing to keep his commandments or because we have not spoken to others about his love. Standing in church singing these words, I felt God speaking to my heart reminding me that it is as we allow him to fill us with his love we can take that love with us wherever we go and share it with others. Sometimes we need to receive before we can give; when was the last time you allowed someone to give you something or do something for you? Most of us have been brought up to think that it is better to give than reGod bless, Susan ceive, but I think we need to learn to receive graciously too.

Over 40 members of the public attended a fairly lively meeting. Parish Council PUBLIC FORUM: Overgrown walkways were brought to the attention of the 8th Sept 2014 at 7.30pm in the Council. That between Willow Close and the Courthouse was particularly challenging and this would be reported. If you Community Centre come across a pathway that is becoming hazardous because of nettles, brambles and general vegetation please contact the Clerk with details of the location. Mention was made of the speed of heavy lorries through the village; on occasions this can be dangerous. Again, please call the Clerk with details of the vehicle if you notice such speeding. In the past, companies have been very receptive to complaints about drivers exceeding the limits through Stradbroke and the Clerk is always happy to speak with transport departments…name of the company concerned plus time and place will be very helpful. One of the replacement street lights was different to the white LEDs and problems of the changing light could be envisaged when night driving. Enthusiastic mention was made of the ability for members of the public to record Council meetings. This encompasses audio and video recording for transmission. Live tweeting and posting on social media and websites has been permitted since 07 August 2014. It should be noted that A Guide for the Press and Public on Attending and Reporting Meetings of Local Government reminds us that anyone wishing to record meetings should not cause disruption or offence either by their behaviour in the meeting or the content they publicise. PLANNING (for reasons of economy of space the details have been truncated; further details can be obtained from the Clerk): Applications for consideration: Refusal recommended, for the following, by a majority decision as the proposal was outside the settlement boundary and there were traffic concerns: 1652/14 outline planning application for the erection of dwelling - The Oaks, Doctors Lane Approval recommended – unanimously – for the following: 1893/14 Waterloo House, Church Street 1928/14 Land to rear of Stradbroke Business Centre, New Street 2238/14 Oakfields, Battlesea Green 2358/14 5 Westhall 2421/14 Wheatsheaf Cottage, Queen’s Street Decisions received from MSDC: Planning permission had been granted for: 1355/14 Internal alterations - The Old Courthouse, Queen’s Street 1524/14 Change of use of part Library to Branch Post Office - Stradbroke Library 1997/14 Change of use of (part of) building from retail to residential. - The Old Post Office, Queen’s Street OTHER BUSINESS: BROADBAND: high speed broadband was looking likely but would, initially, only serve parts of the village. DEVELOPMENT OF THE GARAGE SITE: the Co-op had stated it wished to engage with the Parish Council, Primary School and residents on a possible future use of the site. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN: this was progressing and a grant had been applied for to fund the initial fact finding LIBRARY & COURTHOUSE: with the news that the Post Office should open on 14 October 2014 the Chairman congratulated all who had worked so hard to bring this project to fruition. MAGAZINE: following a very lively discussion it was agreed that publication should continue as is. STREET LIGHTING: the changeover had been completed and a team of Councillors would be checking the lights for snags. WEBSITE: The Council agreed that Stradbroke online would be its official website. CONTACT NUMBERS: If there is an emergency continue to dial 999 but if you just wish to report an incident or seek advice please use 101. Members of the public and press are very welcome to attend meetings of the Parish Council and to bring matters of concern or information to the attention to Members in the time allocated to the Public Forum, which takes place prior to the start of every meeting. Life in the Legion Retired Police Inspector Horace Bunton from Diss was the guest speaker at the monthly midday meeting held at Laxfield King’s Head (the Low House). It was a most interesting talk on his career and, on behalf of the members present Vice-Chairman John Graham gave the usual vote of thanks. I presided and read out the minutes of the recent branch committee meeting, and Bernard Mills’ treasurer’s report. Joyce Cooper reported on her recent Standard Bearer duties and her Welfare Work. By invitation of the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, Lord Tollemache, and the Dean and Chapter of St.Edmundsbury Cathedral, Joyce Cooper, with her father Alan King and myself, attended a service of Choral Evensong and Commemoration of the Centenary of the start of the First World War. 26 standards of the Legion attended with a full congregation. It was a great event for the County of Suffolk. Congratulations to members Doug Crooks and his wife Irene from Laxfield on celebrating their Platinum Wedding Anniversary (70 years). Doug at 93 is our oldest member; he served as a major in the famous Gurkhas. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 11th, at Laxfield King’s Head, starting at 11.30 am. The speaker is our Treasurer, Bernard Mills. Michael Burton, Branch Chairman.
W.I. W.I. July Report Our July meeting had a hint of perfume in the air, as we welcomed Janet Whiteside with her Lavender Baskets Workshop, but before we all settled down to learn, Dorothy welcomed Edna Scarrfe and Jenny Hyde to our meeting, they were joining us for the first time. We also had a surprise visit from Bernadette Smith a member of the Board of the South East Federation of W.Is., and she certainly picked a great night to join us. A note of thanks was read from Stella, thanking everyone for her 90th birthday gift, and after short reports from June and myself on the success of the Haute Couture evening, and the Stradbroke Festifull, we were ready to get weaving (quite literally). All equipped with lavender and ribbon, we keenly watched as Janet demonstrated her art, by delicately weaving ribbon through the heads of lavender, which she had encased with the stems, creating a cage effect. It was all very simple, but so effective. Then it was our turn, and it’s amazing how differently they all turned out, but it was great fun. One thing they had in common was that they all looked very pretty and had a wonderful fragrance. Vera Dowsett a close friend of Janet’s, gave the vote of thanks. W.I. August Report ‘If you go down to the woods today you’re sure of a big surprise’ and that certainly was true for the member’s that attended our August Summer Meeting. The Community Centre was transformed into a mini scene from Winnie the Pooh, with brightly decked tables surrounding a miniature garden and stream, and of course the famous Pooh Bridge, which had been brilliantly constructed by Don Darling. Don a huge thank-you from us all for this, and for all the help you give so freely. As members arrived they were greeted by the Committee, their hosts for the evening, who by means of some superb face painting by Louise Smith had become characters from Winnie the Pooh, complete with tails and ears. Much fun and laughter ensued as Pooh (Dorothy), Tigger (Gill), Owl (Dianne), Eeyore (Betty), Piglet (Lorraine), Rabbit (Jane. G), Kanga (June), and Roo (Carol), bounced around the room serving pre supper drinks, before inviting everyone to enjoy a supper of Lasagne and salads, followed by a variety of delightful desserts. All homemade of course, and served with some very nice Rose wine. Coffee and tea followed. After a great deal of chatter and laughter the supper finally came to an end, and we set about tuning our voices for some singing. We are trying to learn a new version of Jerusalem, and to help us in our efforts we were delighted to welcome Charmaine Cooper an accomplished musician, who kindly and very patiently put us through our paces. We still have much work to do, but it was all very enjoyable. Thank you so much Charmaine. The evening closed with Irene Rogers giving a very warm vote of thanks to the Committee for a very happy evening. Pooh and friends would like to thank everyone for coming, and especially thank those members who insisted on helping with the washing up, and special thanks of course to Louise Smith who created them. As the last remnants of the evening were removed from the hall with the help of our faithful Dougie, it can safely be said that Pooh, Tigger, Owl, Eeyore Piglet, Kanga, Rabbit and Roo had lost a lot of their bounce, and were glad to be heading back to the sanctuGill Bird. ary of their wood.

We have plans for a further collection following the Beaver jumble sale in July, so carry on sorting. Congratulations Bronze DofE: Well done to the six Explorers that recently completed their Bronze Expedition assessment; Ronan Craig, Owen Craig, Lauren Edwards, Barney Finch, Laurie Walpole and Richard Betts. Stradbroke Festiful: After a soggy Saturday in Stradbroke – we raised £140.50 at the Stradbroke Festiful – with an air rifle range and a nerf gun range. The bulk of the money £100 was kindly donated by Hannah’s dad who won the cash raffle and donated it to the Scout Group. This money will be added to the ’HQ developAndrew Alders-Dunthorne ment Account’.
Stradbroke Over 60s Since our last report we have had a most enjoyable day trip to Felixstowe, where once again the weather was very good. We then had a most informative and very interesting talk by Diana Hunt, President of Eastern Area Red Cross, who informed us of all the work that they did in this country and abroad, truly wonderful. At our last meeting we had a musical quiz arranged and played by our good friend Dougie Chittock, which went down very well with our members. Afterwards we all enjoyed a good tea supplied by the committee members and celebrated Peggy Summers birthday, who was 99 years young and still manages to get to our meetings, and go on the outings with us. Our September meeting will be on the 4 and 18 of the month. All will be made most welcome. Joan Grimes th

Wingfield and District Gardening Club A few of us viewed the garden at Columbine Hall with interest on a very mixed weather morning at the beginning of July. A lovely avenue of Lime trees and a huge moat greeted us with a most enchanting square full of herbs and artichokes planted and enclosed at one side of a barn. There were several areas near the house, which dates back to 1350, surrounded by large hedges creating views with seats etc, to provide the focal points. Due to torrential rain, we missed the bog garden! We meet again at Brundish Village Hall on 25 September at 7.30pm to hear Luke Heydon speak on “Designing borders for year round colour”. Radio Stradbroke Another first from Radio Stradbroke is on the horizon, as they are to broadcast the Stradisphere Music Festival on September 5 & 6th. It is not their first outside broadcast, but with two stages to cover on one output channel, it will be our biggest challenge. As a taster DJ Huggy presented a pre-Stradisphere show last week. Look on www.radiostradbroke.co.uk for links to two podcasts, one a review of local bands appearing at Stradisphere, and an interview with ‘The Bootleg Boss’, the UK’s top Bruce Springsteen tribute act, who is headlining on the Friday. For more details of Stradisphere, look on their website. Please support the event, you will not be disappointed! At the end of the month, we will also be covering the Jazz festival, and as winter approaches, so too do the ‘Sunday Sessions’. More details next month. Michael Hugman th

Stradbroke Library/Post Office/Court House News All those children who have completed the Mythical Maze reading challenge this year are invited to the library on Saturday 20th September at 11 am to receive their certificates and medals from county councillor Guy McGregor at our presentation party. There will be chocolate biscuits and crisps to celebrate. The library will be closing at 12.30pm on that Saturday morning for 3 weeks so that the Post Office refurbishment work can take place. Library books taken out before this date will make allowances for our closure with an extended return date. The nearest Suffolk libraries to Stradbroke are Eye, Framlingham and Halesworth for your use when we are closed but of course you can use any Suffolk library to return books and take books out. There is a lot of building work going on in the Courthouse at present in preparation for the Post Office and the Community Café. The Post Office will open in the library on Tuesday 14th October at 2.30pm and from then on will be open for business during all library opening hours. Monday closed Tuesday 2.30pm-5pm and 5.30pm-7.30pm Wed closed Thursday 10am-1pm and 2.30pm-5pm Friday 2.30pm-5pm Saturday 10am-12.30pm Sunday 10am-3pm We will stick with these hours for 3 months and then review them. Angela Frost from Stradbroke and Isabel Dunn from Laxfield, who are both experienced Post office workers, will be helping Stradbroke library staff to become competent at Post Office procedures so that they can give an excellent service to the Stradbroke community. There will be a meeting in the library on Monday September 1st at 2pm for any volunteers who might be interested in helping us out in our community café when it is up and running. Do come along if you feel you can help. Firstly, I am going to concentrate on getting the Post Office up and running in the library efficiently but very soon after, SCALT plans on opening our Community Café. Our plans include organising monthly community meals like breakfast/brunch with newspapers to read on a Sunday morning or themed evening meals such as Italian, Indian, Thai etc. We also plan to open the café during library/Post Office opening hours if we manage to get enough volunteers to help with this. Suffolk Libraries have recently been successful in a bid for securing the funding for screening high quality theatre productions and Stradbroke has been chosen as one of the venues to stage these performances. All is possible in the Courthouse café space. If anyone would like me to expand on any of this information please call in and see me in the library. Maureen John - Library and Post Office Manager

A Grand Auction of Promises with supper, (the casseroles will be cooked to perfection, the puddings will be supreme) is to be held in the Community Centre on Saturday, 4th October. If you haven’t already done so, can you please “Promise your Promise” to Carol Darling ASAP, Frythe Barn, IP21 5JP or Tel: 388098, or caroldon01@gmail.com. We have been very fortunate to secure the services of TW Gaze’s auctioneer, Mike Sarson, to really get the bidding going. Tickets at £15.00 will be on sale soon. It’s vital that the Friends of All Saints raise a goodly amount of money to keep the Parish Church well-repaired for future generations. The major work on the roof has been completed - as you can see what you can’t see from the outside is that, on a rainy day, water comes in through the side aisle’s lead roof. As everyone knows who has anything at all to do with buildings, if water gets into the wood, it’s trouble. We do not want to be thought of as the generation that neglected this wonderful building. We are looking forward to seeing old and new faces at what will be an extremely entertaining and memorable evening. Margaret Streeter, m.streeter@btinternet.com

Stradbroke Cinema Our first film of the new season is on Thursday, 18th September. We are showing “The Monuments Men” at 7.00 for 7.30 pm. The Bar will be open and ice-creams on sale in the interval. Entrance is £5.50. George Clooney wrote it with Grant Heslov; he was also the Director, and starred in it with Cate Blanchett and Matt Damon. Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, the film is an action-drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys - seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 - possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind's greatest achievements. This is their story. It is true. It is history. As a film, it is riveting, suspenseful, harrowing and exciting and somehow, it also manages to be something rare among war pictures—a big-scale entertainment. We will be showing “Labor Day” on 16th October, and “Love Punch” on 20th November. Margaret Streeter

Letters To The Editor “I'm writing to say a big THANK YOU to Jack Melton and Charlotte his mum for the wonderful work they have done to raise money for Cancer Research and Marie Curie nurses in Mike’s name. Mike was manager and coach to the SYFC team that Jack played in. When Mike was diagnosed with cancer Jack made a promise to him and this summer he is carrying it through. This is an amazing achievement and I have so much admiration for the fantastic effort and perseverance from both of them. Please join us at the Community Centre on 13th September at 7.30pm for a raffle and disco evening with lots of wonderful prizes. Entry is free and the bar open. Please help Jack raise as much as he can. Jack wants to raise £700 – let’s see if we can do even better. Jack has also organised a football match for Sat. 30th August between SYFC and Laxfield at 10am on Stradbroke Community field. Everyone welcome. There are sponsor forms around the village or if you prefer, Jack has set up a Virgin Money Giving a/c on line - ‘Mike Readman Memorial Charity Match’s. Thank you, Ann Readman” “This letter is a bit late, due to the fact that my daughters last two emails have got lost in a black hole. I would like to give special thanks to everybody who help me and the people who donated prizes for the raffle, for the Bingo Night which was held for the Norfolk and Norwich Kidney Patients Ass. We raised £226.50 which was gratefully received, and also everyone that attended, otherwise we would not have raised that amount. Thanks once again. Avril Major”
Following their “O” party, Stella and Jane would like to let their friends know that £600 was raised for Stradbroke Medical Centre and thank everyone for their donations. We will let you know how it will be spent. Stella and Jane. Letters to the editor continued on page 20 >>

Parish Council Notice Public Notice
Statutory Consultation. The Neighbourhood Planning (General) Regulations, 2012 Mid Suffolk District Council has received an application from Stradbroke Parish Council to designate an area that they think is appropriate to be covered by a future Neighbourhood Plan. Neighbourhood planning allows communities to develop their own planning policies which will guide new development and help meet the needs of the community. Once complete (it may take 18-24 months to produce) the neighbourhood plan will be used by Mid Suffolk District Council when deciding planning applications in this area. Why are we consulting? The area proposed by Stradbroke Parish Council for neighbourhood planning purposes follows the Stradbroke parish boundary. Mid Suffolk District Council must consult for at least six weeks before making a decision to designate this area. Following this consultation period Mid Suffolk District Council will consider the comments received in determining the application. The designation decision will be published on the website below. How to respond The application and supporting documents are available online at www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/StradbrokeNP Alternatively paper copies are available for public inspection at Stradbroke Library, and at Mid Suffolk District Council offices in Needham market. The statutory period of consultation will finish at 4:00pm on 10th September 2014 (extended). Please provide any comments you may have during this period. In particular your comments should focus on whether the area is appropriate to be used for Stradbroke’s Neighbourhood Plan. For instance if there is a group of houses or a business that is bisected by the boundary you may feel that this should be included within the area. Comments can be submitted either by e-mail to nhp@midsuffolk.gov.uk or by post, addressed to: Peter Freer, Enabling Officer - Community Led Planning & Design, Mid Suffolk District Council, 131 High Street, Needham Market, Ipswich, Suffolk. IP6 8DL Your comments will be kept on a public file and they may be reproduced publicly in writing or on our website. Please note that we are consulting on the neighbourhood plan Area proposed by Stradbroke Parish Council. This is not the time to submit detailed or specific comments in relation to planning in Stradbroke. Please contact Stradbroke Parish Council about their Neighbourhood Plan process or check the parish council website for information. Carol Smy
Neighbourhood Plan News You may wonder what has happened since our meeting in May. In summary the committee has: * Gained endorsement from the Parish Council to proceed to the next stage * Met with representatives from Lavenham to get first hand experience of what they have done in their plan * Met with Jonathan Free from MSDC to get his advice on the best way forward * Defined the boundary for which the neighbourhood plan will cover (necessary in order to secure a grant) * Established a provisional set of work streams based on the comments made at the first public meeting back in May namely; Education, Environment, Housing & Development, Economy, Transport/access to services and Heritage & Conservation. The Parish Council has confirmed the appointment of five new members to the committee - Charmaine Cooper, George Chaplin, Candice Dudley, Oliver Coles and Stuart Crane. Together with four of the original members Don Darling, Gerald Jenkins, Roger Turkington and myself - we have a good cross section of the community but may add to this. In the last few days we’ve just received confirmation of our grant application for £6,500 so now we can move forward apace. We have recently emailed all those who said they would be willing to help to ascertain their interests and we aim to have a meeting of all volunteers in September to set up various ‘specialist’ groups focusing of each topic area. If you were not at the meeting, did not receive the email or have changed your mind and would like to help please get in touch -np@Stradbrokeonline.org.uk. Further news and regular updates will appear in the magazine and on the website at Stradbrokeonline.org.uk, Oliver Last, Chairman of Neighbourhood Planning Committee

A View From The Gallery... My, Oh my!! What a night! The meeting room was packed tight and I mean tight, with fellow PC watchers, councillors and a camera. Yes, it is now perfectly fine for anyone to film, audio record, photograph, tweet, live stream, blog. . . in the name of open government. In fact one of the councillors had been given the task of finding out more on the subject and brought to council a quote of £4000. From the audience came an involuntary loud gasp which to my ears meant ‘no way’. If the council has that kind of money to spend then they might like to consider the disabled and vulnerable people in our village and maybe up our contribution to improve their lives. Just a suggestion. It is worth mentioning at this point that four members of the public stood up and exercised their right to free speech and gave two minutes each to the councillors ears. The issues brought to the PC attention were: • ·the Governments code of practice with regard to publishing and also the new rules on the right to record; • ·the appalling and dangerous state of some paths; • ·the wrong replacement bulbs on some of the street lighting and • a need to stop the large lorries thundering through our village. Now for the main event and the reason I suspect that many of the 50ish members of the public have attended -The Stradbroke Monthly. Yes, the very magazine you are reading now and have received in your post box since the 1980s. A working party had been set up to look at a way forward as a dispute had arisen. At this point I recommend you view the whole debate when it becomes available as it lasted approx. 45mins. However, hooray for the councillor who brought the very sensible solution to the table which was to leave it alone and let it carry on as it always had. Voted on, carried, democracy in action. As you will imagine it was a long evening and the Chair did quite well steering this potentially difficult meeting through a number of hazards. I am not sure which councillor made the remark but it needs repeating and that is that the councillors are there to serve us. So I hope they listened really hard to the four speakers at the very start of the meeting. Finally, the new rules which allow the use of modern technology to record meetings means, dear Reader, that ‘A View from the Gallery’ has become somewhat redundant and so I shall probably end my run with The Stradbroke Monthly now. I will continue to attend PC meetings and express my own personal view on the Stradbroke Village website – and if you ask which site, then it’s the one that allows each of us to have a view and then to express it if we want to. I’m all for that. Ann Readman (A View From The Gallery will continue monthly on my page at www.stradbroke.org.uk)

Sports Roundup
Stradbroke Cricket Club The advantage of a two month gap in publications is that things can change drastically within a cricket club. The days of struggling to field 11 players & being bowled out cheaply seem a distant memory as both senior teams have found some form. Great credit must go to captains Ben Flatt, Martin Cuthbert, & James Gilbee for their continued hard work in getting teams out. The Vikings have moved off the bottom of their league thanks to accomplished wins at Bury St.Edmunds & Nowton followed by a win over Stowmarket. It is been a particular purple patch for Josh Franklin-Mann, who as well as taking 18 wickets in his last 5 games, scored his maiden century at Nowton. No stranger to hundreds is Alan Barker, making his 8th for Stradbroke against I&ES for the A Team, sharing an opening stand of 151 with Marcus Marvell. Watching two class batsmen perform together was captivating. This was followed by a win at high flying Saxmundham that ensures their safety for another season. The one disappointment was defeat to Needham Market in the Plate Quarter Final, despite a fine 75 from David Allum. The juniors wrapped up their season with a bbq & presentation, the proceeds going to ‘Help For Heroes’. Thanks to everyone who contributed their time, food, & prizes. £300 was raised. Awards went to the following ‘Players of the Year’:Under 13 – William Ramsey, Under 11 – Drew Cotton, U-15 Girls – Poppy Felgate, U-11 Girls – Alice Bloore. Most Improved players:- U-13 – Brett Cotton, U-11 – Graham Mobbs, U-15 Girls – Immi Howard, U-11 Girls – Jesse Evans-Hendrick. Well done to all of them Michael Hugman

Stradbroke & District Bowls Club Many thanks to all those who attended our Jumble Sale in July, we raised £216.47 which will go towards to upkeep of our green. At the Festifull we were pleased to meet friends and the atmosphere in the marque helped the day along. We raised £59 which in view of the competition wasn't bad. Well done to the organisers and helpers you worked so hard and each year it is getting better and better. Stradbroke Youth FC - The Canaries come to Town On Monday 18th August, Norwich City Football Club (NCFC) came to Stradbroke to hold one of their regional youth development trials in search of new talent for the future. Stradbroke Youth FC acted as host to these regional trials. Stradbroke was chosen as one of only 4 development centres in Suffolk to cover players from the northern border region of Suffolk. 135 of the best young footballers in the region took part. Both boys and girls trained and played games, whilst being assessed by professional football coaches. It was impressive to see such an array of young talent playing on our home ground. From the trials, approximately one third of the players will be invited to join a NCFC development centre to undertake 12 weeks of further training and coaching by professionals. This new development centre will be based at Stradbroke High School, another first for Stradbroke. Some of our own local players took part in the event, and it was excellent to see them compete alongside players from much bigger named clubs such as Framlingham, Diss, Debenham and Eye. At the time of going to press we know that James and Sam Green, Jack Melton, Oliver Roper and Giles Tuley have been selected and we are hopeful there will be more to follow. It was indeed a memorable day for our club. One which Mike Readman, one of SYFC's co-founders, would have been immensely proud of. Jack Melton (affectionately known as "Melon") is organising a Mike Readman Memorial Football Match on August 30th in aid of Cancer charities followed up on Sept 13th with a raffle & family disco. All proceeds will go to the Marie Curie and Cancer Research Charities. Please come and support him on one or both days. Don Darling
Keeping in Touch: Dan Poulter, MP The recent debate in the House of Lords concerning Lord Falconer’s private member’s bill to legalise the practice of assisted dying has led to great debate not only in the media but across society as a whole. The proposed legislation would allow doctors to prescribe a lethal dose to terminally ill patients judged to have less than six months to live. When I started out as a medical student I was in favour of assisted dying but my own experience on the frontline doing a lot of late-night calls, often in a ward of cancer patients, changed that view. I think palliative care and hospice care are invaluable and can change the mind-set of someone with a sense of helplessness that can be felt in the face of death. I cannot see that we could make legislation on this without leaving people open to abuse. I do not doubt the good motives of most people but I think as a proposal it is too well-meaning, too detached from real life. When I was training to be a doctor I witnessed cases which raised alarm bells about the motives of some relatives. There was a case in which the husband of a woman with advanced multiple sclerosis seemed more concerned about protecting their assets, than about the care she received. From the kinds of questions he asked, we worried about his motivations. The patient had relatively advanced MS - but she was not dying. We were optimistic she would recover and soon be able to go back home, yet his questions were about the assets, about what would happen after her death. There is a great need for compassion. I myself have been involved in resuscitating patients, it is a very brutal experience to undergo, with a very low chance - two or three per cent - of success. There is a need for frank dialogue with a patient’s family to discuss the issues surrounding their treatment. In one case a patient was in the advanced stages of pancreatic cancer. In her medical notes, consultants had given a prognosis of two to three months, yet during her stay in hospital, no one had informed her relatives that she was dying. Her heart stopped and I had to attempt resuscitation, in order to "buy some time" in which the family could attempt to be reconciled to her circumstances. This patient was saved but she was left with cracked ribs, which made it incredibly painful for her to breathe. Afterwards the doctors who were involved in the case with me discussed their regrets about the way they had handled it. I remember my consultant's exact words, he said: 'You would not treat a dog like that.' Medicine is failing these patients because we are not willing to have a proper conversation about death. I hold regular constituency advice surgeries locally to help people who have problems. Stradbroke Allotment and Gardeners Association Although it's still officially the Summer holidays, as I write this there is definitely an Autumnal feel in the air. Sweet corn is ripe, my apple tree is laden, and my Aubergines have fruit which is slowly turning purple despite our changeable weather. The Aubergine plants came from my dad, who at 85 is still a fabulous gardener and whose energy and skill leave me far behind. His own Aubergine plants are cosseted in a poly tunnel so he has beautiful fruits which my mum has no idea what to do with. Baked in the oven, they are very bland, so here is my favourite Aubergine recipe, Imam Bayaldi, which translates as 'the priest fainted' Bake 2 large halved Aubergines in a medium oven for thirty minutes until the flesh is soft. Gently scrape the flesh out of each shell leaving the skin intact. Sauté a large chopped onion and garlic (up to twelve cloves according to taste) in olive oil. Be generous with the oil. Add two or three chopped red or yellow peppers and soften. Stir in dried chilli flakes to taste , cumin seeds, a teaspoon of sugar, chopped fresh tomatoes or drained tinned tomatoes, a dessert spoon of sugar and two tablespoons of red wine vinegar, a sprinkle of salt and a squirt of sundries tomato paste. When it has all melded together add a generous amount of chopped parsley and pile back into the Aubergine shells. I like to sprinkle pine nuts on top. Pour over tomato juice and bake in a medium oven. For thirty to forty minutes. Serve with crust bread for mopping up the juices, and a seasonal salad. Thank you to everyone so came to visit us on our annual open day. The sun shone, cakes were in abundance, and we had a wonderful time. If anyone feels inspired to join us , we have two plots remaining. It has to be one of the nicest places in the village. Happy gardening Gill Palmer, Chair With the glut of courgettes this time of year it is frustrating thinking of ideas to use them up. One idea is a delicious Courgette Chutney which goes really well with cheese. This recipe was given to me by a friend of a friend so I do not know the originator of it. I kilo of courgettes – sliced thin, sprinkled with salt and left for 2hrs. Rinse well and drain. To a saucepan add the courgettes and 2 diced onions, 2 tablespoons salt, 3 cups sugar, 2 cups white vinegar, 4 tspn mustard seeds, 2 tspn celery salts, 3 tspn turmeric and bring to the boil. Boil for 5 minutes then simmer for 15 minutes. Thicken with cornflour if needed. Cool slightly, then fill into heated and sterilised jars. Really easy and quick to do. If anyone has any seasonal recipes they would like to share, please let us know and we can include them in our news. To follow on from Gill, we do indeed have two whole plots remaining, but these can be divided into half plots or indeed quarter plots if required. Full plots are £50, half plots are £30 and quarter plots or raised beds are £15. We have a water supply, a compost toilet and the entire site has a rabbit proof fence around it. All Together Now You may have noticed that Stradbroke now has a brand new facility on the Playing Field. This new solid brick-built building is for the storage of equipment belonging to the Cricket and Football Clubs as well as the Festifull. Finally, all the equipment that has been stored over the years in various homes, outhouses, barns and private garages all over the village has been brought to a single site which has electricity and water. The project was conceived by the Charitable Trust in October last year and having produced and costed the plans, we got permission from the Parish Council and Building Regulations. This took some time and work started in March. From then on it was a mad rush to get everything completed in time for the Festifull at the end of June. Special thanks are due to Alan Flatman for levelling the site and digging the footings so quickly and expertly and especially for missing the 11,000 volt cable that was nearby! Most of the work was done by volunteers but our collective bricklaying skills weren't up to it. However, two excellent professionals helped us at a special rate. They were Will Wilkinson (07702 672352) and Mark Wilkinson who is mysteriously always known as ‘Charlie‘ (07780 334771). Do give them a call if you ever need a good brickie! The total cost of the project was around £14,500 of which £7,000 was funded by the sports clubs, Stradbroke All Stars, The Charitable Trust and the Parish Council. We also received £7,500 in grants from Mid Suffolk District Council. The biggest single item of cost was the provision of electricity. That alone came to an amazing £3,200. Some of you may have seen the complete sub-station outside the swimming pool being replaced late one Saturday night! The Bowls Club have also benefited as they now have an electricity connection for the first time. There are still a few finishing touches needed internally but all should be completed by the end of October. This means that Stradbroke now has a splendid new asset, mostly created by volunteers - Don Darling, Peter Smith, Roger Turkington, Michael Gibbons, Mike Marlow and Harry Ereira. Special thanks are also due to Gavin Borrett for helping with the specification and the testing of the electrics. Also to Roy & Joyce Lee for providing the teas, coffees and an occasional beer for those working late! Electricity was provided during the construction by Don & Velda Lummis. A hearty thanks to all! Gerald Jenkins (On behalf of the Stradbroke Charitable Trust which managed the whole project)
