Play Parks Update Along with the working group set up by the Parish Council to work on improving the Villages Play Parks, a community fundraising group has been brought together, the group comprises of Ellie Wharton (from the Parish Council), Katie Eagle and Gemma Coe. We met up for the first time at the end of July to talk through fundraising ideas. From this we organised our first event, a Teddy Bears Picnic, it was held on Wednesday 27th July at Westhall Play Park. The event was a fantastic success the Prize Draw and Ice pop sales raising £110 and we would like to thank everyone who came to support the event. As this event was such a success we are planning on running another picnic, this time a Back to School Picnic on Tuesday 30th August 11.30am – 1.30pm , it’s free to attend and again we will run a raffle which will be £1 a strip, all you need to do is bring yourselves and your picnic. Our next event after this is a Family Disco on Saturday 1st October 4pm – 7pm at Stradbroke Community Centre, We have the wonderful Stradbroke based ‘Amazing Happenings’ running the Disco for us and some fantastic prizes up for grabs in the Raffle. We will also have face painting, temporary tattoos and a Sweet Stop and the Pizza Base to help fill any hungry bellies, the Bar will also be open so you will be able to quench your thirst too! Tickets are £2 for children and £3 for Adults with all proceeds going to the Play Park Improvements fund. They can be bought in person from any of the fundraising group members, by emailing elliestradpc@outlook.com or at the Library. We are also currently working on a Charity Calendar with local tradesmen and business’ taking part, we have all our volunteers for photos but if there is anyone who would like to place an advert in the calendar then please email Katie at katie.eagle@btinternet.com to book your spot! Once we have all the adverts and photos done we will get them printed up ready to go on sale and again all proceed will go towards the Play Park Improvements, so watch this space! We are hoping to run a bake sale in the October half term and will let everyone know the details when they are confirmed. We will continue to update you on how our fundraising efforts are going and on upcoming events. If anyone is interested in helping us out with the Family Disco or any other events we run in the future, if you would like to donate a prize for raffles, or are unable to attend our events but would like to make a donation to the fundraising efforts then please do not hesitate to get in contact. Thank you, Ellie, Katie & Gemma

Defibrillator in Stradbroke Following an incident in the White Hart Pub recently, we needed access to a defibrillator urgently. Happily we were able to locate one with one of Stradbroke’s First Responders which helped our situation immensely. Afterwards many people said they didn’t realise there were 6 in the village in all, and hardly anyone knew where they were, so we thought it may be useful to let people know where they may be found. The defibrillators are in the following locations in Stradbroke and are available as shown below: The Library / Post Office: Mon, Tues, Fri 2pm – 5pm, Thurs 9am – 1 pm & 2 – 5pm Sat 9am – 1 pm Closed Wednesday and Sunday Tel: 01379 384768 The Swimming Pool Mon – Fri 7.00am – 9.30pm Sat & Sun 8.30 am – 5.00pm Tel: 01379 384375 The Doctors Surgery Mon – Fri 8.30am – 12.30pm Mon & Fri 3.45pm – 6.15pm Tel: 01379 388313 Spar Shop Daily 7.00am – 9.00 pm Tel:01379 384990 With the Duty Officer of the First Responders (only available if someone is on duty, they are contacted by emergency services who will then send them to the incident). The Fire Service has one attached to the engine for their accidents and emergencies. We have contacted the Parish Council and we understand they are looking into a suitable place in the village to site a machine which would be available 24 hours a day. There is also a defibrillator in Horham on the outside of their Community Centre and in Fressingfield in the old telephone box which can be obtained by telephoning the number indicated at each location which will then advise a code to obtain the machine. We all hope we will not need these, but sometimes a little knowledge can be a great help. Thankfully our situation was saved by finding this machine and our bowls club member is now well on the road to recovery. Yours sincerely, Julie Ward, Secretary Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club
What is a Defibrillator and what do I do with it? The village website that is at www.stradbroke.org.uk has links to the St John Ambulance guidance on using a defibrillator and a video demonstrating how to use it. Download the St Johns First Aid App for free on Google Play and the App Store and you have Emergency First Aid guidance on you at all times!

Create & Chatter October will see the first anniversary of our Create & Chatter group which meets at the Baptist Church. Once a month on a Saturday morning we get together to do some (relatively) easy craft, have a cup of tea or coffee and a chat. We’ve laughed together, made new friends and admired each other’s handiwork. Over the year we’ve tried porcelain painting, macramé and decopatch; we’ve created jewellery from hand-made paper beads and made greeting cards of various types as well as a number of other projects. The programme is fairly flexible - we introduce something new each month and materials are usually available to carry on with a craft someone has particularly enjoyed. We just ask for a £1 donation each session to help cover our costs. We would love to see some new faces as we get back together in September. Baptist Church Hall 10 – 11:30am Saturdays 17th Sept. 15th Oct 19th Nov. 10th Dec. Harvest Time How big is your shovel? The story is told of an American Christian farmer who was well known for his kindness and generosity. This big hearted farmer was the first contact of any appeal in the local community, and his Church regularly benefitted from his open – handed approach. One day a neighbouring farmer asked. “How is it that, you a small farmer can give so much away?” In reply the farmer said. “I keep shovelling the cash out and God keeps shovelling it in, but His shovel is bigger than mine”. This is Harvest Time again, and for many of the older generation it brings back happy memories of horses, waggons, binders, sheaves and thatched cornstacks. Hard graft but happy people as the whole community got involved in harvesting. Yes, it’s all changed now as a much reduced workforce using a small number of giant machines gather more grain than ever before. But the bounty of harvest still demonstrates the goodness of God. For God’s shovel is always the largest. Can you help? In recent years Stradbroke residents have been very generous in giving tools which we pass on to Tools With A Mission. Your tools, after renovation, are sent to the developing world. If you’ve ever wondered what happened to your old sewing machine, or spanners join us on Sunday 25th Sept. at 10:15am when our Harvest Thanksgiving service will focus on the growing and important work of TWAM. YES Tools are still needed, just give us a call. Please contact: John Ling 388751 (Church Elder) Jackie Hughes 384112 (Church Administrator)

All Saints - From the Rectory Dear friends and neighbours What interesting and challenging times we live in: strange weather, leaving the EU and many changes in politics, all of which has left some people feeling worried about the future; others who have lived in this country for years but were born elsewhere, are feeling rejected and it seems that racial hatred is still about. All in all one can easily feel fearful and down. However, I am not just an optimist, I also have faith in a loving God who allows us freewill but has a plan for us and will not be beaten. Believing that God loves me as he does you enables me to look for something better around the corner. The letter to the Hebrews in the bible tells us; faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. No matter what we voted for in the referendum, no matter what fears beset us, I believe that if we put our trust in God we will know his peace and if we let him guide us we will find that particular race and plan he has set before us. Whether you have faith or none, are part of a church or not, please remember that I am here to not only lead our churches but also have the responsibility to pray and care for the whole of our communities. Obviously I cannot do that alone but alongside others. If you would like to talk something over with someone please don’t hesitate to get in touch. God bless, Susan

Life in the Legion—The Royal British Legion (Stradbroke and District Branch) From the Chairman’s Desk Since my last notes the branch continues to meet monthly at Laxfield Royal Oak. Recent speakers have been Alf Bloomfield from Saxmundham the County R.B.L. area representative, who spoke on a large range of subjects and member Major Rosemary Warne, MBE, DL, who spoke on the life of the late Brigadier Geoffrey Weston. The Branch has lost its oldest member, 95 year old Douglas Crooks from Laxfield, the branch was well represented at his funeral service, held in All Saints Church, Laxfield. Douglas served as a Major in the famous Gurkhas and was very active for his age, he will be much missed by all in the branch. The next branch meeting will be held on Thursday, 8th. September, to be held at our usual venue Laxfield Royal Oak, starting at 11.30 am. The guest speaker will be an Officer from Diss Salvation Army. Members please attend if you are able. Michael Burton (Branch Chairman)
W.I. July: This month we offered an open meeting for everyone interested in flower arranging at the highest level because our speaker was Jenny Baker a gold medal winner at the Chelsea Flower Show and wow what a show she put on for us. More than 60 ladies gathered to fill the Community Centre in happy anticipation of the spectacle to come and their happy chatter was a cheerful prelude. Jill welcomed us all and did the basic housekeeping before we leapt straight into the evening’s entertainment with the introduction of Jenny. What followed was a wonderful display of her artistry with flowers and her ability to tell a good yarn as she worked. Jenny chatted easily about how she became involved in flower arranging , the occasional politics of Flower Clubs but mostly about her journey, literally, to Chelsea to compete, and the nearly horrors of some of the hotels she was booked into, not places you would like your daughter to stay, not to mention the taxi driver who did not have ’the knowledge’ and who drove around London searching for their destination before dropping them at the end of the required street leaving them to finish their journey on foot. The stories of, at best second rate hotels, and at worst a hostel where she had to pay for bed linen, make her own bed up and cook her own breakfast, made us laugh and gasp in admiration at her indomitable spirit. As she chatted Jenny’s magic fingers fashioned the most beautiful creations using basic and exotic greenery and of course wonderfully coloured flowers of different shapes and sizes all toning and complementing each other .Four of these were produced through the evening with a break for refreshments after the first two displays had been perfected, and the ladies sat enthralled to the end enjoying every minute of their ‘chat’ with Jenny as she entertained in her friendly and relaxed way. Carrie Barnes gave a heartfelt vote of thanks roundly supported by the audience and then came the raffle as four lucky ladies became the proud owners of a floral masterpiece each, and so the evening ended as the contented audience left amid bright chatter and the perfume of the beautiful flowers disappearing into the evening air. Our next evening is our garden evening starting at 6pm on 11th August, see you there!! August: This is our summer meeting traditionally held in a members garden but, with the joys of the English weather ,once bitten many times soaked, we now hold it in the Community Centre. To this end the room was beautifully presented with decorated tables and flowers and the ladies in their pretty summer clothes adding to the summer feeling. The members were welcomed with the choice of a glass of Pimms or a fruit drink , the Pimms went down very well and the room was soon full of chatter and laughter. The ladies of the committee presented a wonderful summer buffet of various meats and salads followed by some of the wickedest desserts ever enjoyed and so the evening progressed. Jane G. presented two quizzes and had the fun of trying to keep the participants in order as the ladies competed for the prize of a mini chocolate bar each . A vote of thanks was given by Moira Gibling heartily endorsed by all the members, a large number of whom took over the washing up and general clearing up , much appreciated by the committee members. Thus ended a very happy evening and the well fed chattering members disappeared into the chilly night looking forward to the September meeting which we believe will be a great treat as Brian Piccolo will be coming to speak about ,walking top to toe in New Zealand, this will be on the 8th of September and all will be welcome on the evening, he is a great speaker so come and try us out !!! Prue Rush

Review of Stradbroke High School’s Music Concert at All Saints Church, Stradbroke We held our summer music concert this year in the beautiful setting of All Saints Church here in Stradbroke Village. An exciting mix of music from the nineteenth century right up to 2016 was presented to an appreciative audience of parents and friends. The concert opened with a high energy medley of three songs from the musical 'Joseph' as an homage to the fabulous full school production earlier in the year. In addition to the orchestra, there were also contributions from the brass ensemble, Orange Blues, the Samba band and 'Amplifier' composition group. Highly polished solo performances came from Summer Amass, Courtney Chilvers, Hannah Allum and Jessica Rutherford all of whom have just left year 11. The evening was further enhanced by a mature and sensitive rendition of 'Count Your Blessings' performed by Courtney Debenham and Skye Lintott; a beautifully expressive performance by Ellie Ryan of 'Over the Rainbow' and the purity of tone of Charlotte Watson singing 'Lead Me Lord' by S.S. Wesley. In addition, the audience was also treated to the mellow and assured playing of Marty Gionis and a fantastic arrangement of 'Moon River'. As the evening drew to a close, the audience showed their appreciation with rapturous applause. This memorable musical evening also helped to raise money for the upkeep of the magnificent All Saints Church. Mr Jonathan Williams, Head of Music

Stradbroke Archive and Records Association As our village children prepare to return to a new academic year at school or university and for some, their very first time away from home it may be worth thinking about how it was 100 years ago to be a pupil at Stradbroke School. The building , now a Primary School, looks from the front almost the same although then it was the only school and catered for all ages. Today the struggle is trying to persuade the children to leave the playground at the end of the day to go home, but it was very different in the past. On 11th May 1878 George Frampton wrote to Revd. JC Ryle accepting the positions of the new school’s Master and Mistress on behalf of himself and his wife. They moved from their home in Birmingham to Stradbroke and settled in to teaching all the village children. One of those children was Claude Rush. He wrote an account of his time as a pupil which give an insight on how it was in those times. In c1909 a small boy witnessed the following: ‘Mr and Mrs Frampton ruled us with great strickness . . . Mr Frampton’s cane, (sic. was) kept in a cupboard near the east window, of the big room. The thrashing was done at end of the room . . . . I remember vividly one caning – the recipient was a biggish boy named G. Following the familiar call “Come out for the cane” out went G. and Frampton lashed his outstretched hands (he’d had it before and didn’t need to be told what to do). Then G lost his temper and mumbling something, attacked Frampton. He kicked and thumped. The cane now came in from all directions at increased speed – swish, swish, slosh on legs, arms and back, also getting mixed up with the cord holding Mr F’s flying pince-nez. G gave in and made for his seat. Frampton lashed him all the way back and after he (the boy) had sat down the cane struck the furniture as much as it did G. Frampton was exhausted and we were all frightened to death.’ Mr Frampton was master to the upper school’s paying pupils whilst Mrs Frampton taught the others. Claude Rush writes, ‘Mrs Frampton, seeing boys fighting in the playground, would go out amongst them and say “if you want to fight anybody fight me” rolling up her blouse sleeves as she spoke.’ Perhaps it’s better not to dwell too long on a time when children were to be seen and not heard and rejoice in the wonderful education that is now both given and received at Stradbroke Primary School! Radio Stradbroke Stradisphere 2016 seems an eternity ago already. All those months of planning & problem solving are wearing, but it is only when we step outside our bubble, do we realise the profound effect the festival has on musicians, music lovers, & locals alike, which makes it all worthwhile. Back to the day job, Radio Stradbroke “Summer Music Nights” continue on Wednesdays from 8pm to 10pm until the end of September, hopefully the Summer will continue with it! From October, new improved “Sunday Sessions” return. The plan is to run from 10 am to 2pm with two shows of two hours each week. Watch this space on www.radiostradbroke.co.uk Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Trust Following our August meeting, we would like to update you all with what has been achieved since our last report. The Stradbroke Surgery: The modifications to the Pharmacy and Reception areas are now complete and the staff are pleased with the result. The Pharmacy now complies with QCC guidelines and the Air-Conditioning unit keeps medication at the correct temperature. Total costs for the refurbishment is £11,966. When funds allow, we are hoping to install automatically opening doors and a ramp, to the main entrance of the Surgery. The Allotments: We will be taking professional advice on the best time to cut the mixed fruiting hedge around the perimeter of the Allotments. This is bearing a lot of delicious fruits, some of which are ready for picking. The Allotment holders are very kindly taking on the job of ensuring the pathways are clear and the hedge boundary is maintained. We are hoping a local farmer will help us with cutting the 400m hedge, around the Village Garden and Allotments, possibly next year. Defibrillator: The Trust has investigated the possibility of having a ‘whole Village accessible’ Defibrillator, but as the Parish Council are also looking into something similar, we will await their decision, after their next meeting. Our present balance is £7,000. Jane Merritt, (Secretary for The Stradbroke Trust)
Festifull Volunteers This year’s event was another community success, with many of the visitors and stall-holders saying that Saturday was perhaps one of the best events in recent times, the layout with the big marquees and the new performers were mentioned most frequently. Unfortunately Sunday was cancelled due to the heavy rain and waterlogged field and as consequence we made a financial loss. All good things must eventually come to an end and after 6 successful years and despite frequent requests for more new volunteers to come forward, without success, the committee have decided it is time to stand down. Unless another group comes forward there will be no Festifull or equivalent next year for the benefit of all in our community. If such a group comes forward then all of us are willing to help if needed and we have ‘ring fenced’ £1000 of reserves just in case and retained all of the equipment – marquees, games etc. We all hope that the tradition of a Stradbroke ‘fete’ can continue but obviously volunteers need to come forward. Please give the matter some serious thought, discuss with friends and neighbours but don’t wait until it’s too late the field needs to be booked well in advance in consultation with the Cricket Club and PC. There is another article in this issue which provides some more insight into the history and finances of the Festifull and detailed accounts can be viewed on the village website that is at stradbr okeonline. org. uk. SAS (Stradbroke All Stars) The SAS group was formed in 2010 to organise/sponsor family oriented community projects for Stradbroke. The most successful of these ventures has been the Festifull, which for the last 6 years has provided an opportunity for all clubs and societies the opportunity to raise funds for their organisation, and has also provided a weekend of fun and games for everyone in and around Stradbroke. We are often asked – where does all the money go from the Festifull? First and foremost it has never been the aim of SAS to “make money” and any surplus funds, after expenses, have always been used for community benefit. A full set of accounts are available on the village website that is at stradbr okeonline. org. uk. The Festifull aims to cover its expenses and hopefully raise sufficient funds to cushion a possible loss in future years. The expenses, range from the hire of marquees (c. £1200), insurance, first aid, payments to performers, printing costs etc. Unfortunately this year we had to cancel the Sunday activities, due to bad weather and the Festifull made a loss of £400. In previous Over the years, any surplus income has either been used to support other projects or invested in equipment for the benefit of the community. Over the last 6 years, in addition to the Festifull, SAS has supported: - The Pet Show - The Intervillage Games - It’s a Knockout/Wipeout - A Nature Reserve project - The launch of Stradisphere SAS has also invested surplus funds in community assets including: - Two marquees and a gazebo (total cost £2,150) - The Community Shed, which provides a secure storage facility for sports & other community equipment - A variety of games equipment which has been borrowed by other organisations, such as the schools. - And most recently a substantial donation to the Children’s Playpark project With the Festifull Committee standing down this year, SAS will no longer have any active projects. The SAS Committee has decided to retain sufficient funds available to support any group who would like to launch a new community based initiative for the benefit of all in the village. If you have an idea and the people power that goes with it, don’t hesitate to get in touch with any member of the committee; Don Darling – Chair 388098, Karine Last – Treasurer 384429, Sam Hackett 388872, Julia Nowell (nee Green) 07796 624768 or Roger Turkington 384248. Friends of Stradbroke Church Our AGM was held on Wednesday, 13 July. After giving her report, on a very satisfactory year, Margaret Jenkins said she would be stepping down as Chairman, after many years. We do thank her for such capable leadership. Officers for the coming year will be: - Chairman/Press Officer Margaret Streeter. Treasurer, Carol Darling. Secretary/Membership, Jane Merritt. Jennie Jones/ FwF. Gill Rennie-Dunkerly (ex-officio) is our project leader for the Grant application to the English Heritage Lottery Fund (see below). Margaret Streeter th
The 3 Rectors Project We are delighted to announce that we have successfully passed the first stage of applying for a Heritage Lottery Fund in order to undertake a large renovation of All Saints Church. The next stage involves a specialist architect conducting a thorough survey of the building and writing a very detailed report on the urgent work required. This architect has been contracted and we will shortly notice emergency measures being taken – watch the roof very carefully! This will only be temporary to prevent any further damage while we set about completing the 2nd stage of application that focuses on the development of the project and how the whole community can be involved. As this unfolds we will keep everyone informed and let you all know how you can take part in this rescue of the biggest, most impressive, most central and iconic building in Stradbroke while celebrating our heritage. As work progresses, we shall have a very regular up-date with images on the village website that is at FOASS/All Saints PCC www.stradbro keonline. org. uk plus a summary report in the Stradbroke Monthly.
Stradbroke Neighbourhood Plan We were delighted to meet those of you who visited our stall at the Festifull in June where we had a display of the key points that emerged from the questionnaires. For those of you who did not make it you can find copies of all that information on the village website www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk. We are also pleased to announce that the winner of the prize draw was Mr. G. MaCarty of The Paddocks. We have recently conducted walkabouts of the village and would like to thank those of you who came with us to identify those important visual elements of Stradbroke. These images will go forward as part of a major display at the next important event: The Stradbroke Neighbourhood Plan Open Day on Sunday, November 6th 10.00-3.00 in the Community Centre. This is when we shall be presenting all the feedback from you that came from the questionnaires and an opportunity for you to give comments on the draft plan. Much more detail on this event will be given in next month’s magazine. Gillian Rennie-Dunkerley (Chair of NP Committee)
Bigsky Writers Bigsky Writing Group is based in Stradbroke but has members both from within and beyond the village. Meeting twice a month, the group shares and discusses individual work to refine individual work. There are often lively debates over use of language, structure, characters and so on but these are always in the spirit of helping each other develop and improve. This sounds very serious and intense but there is much laughter at the group meetings and no-one is criticised brutally but encouraged and stimulated to look again at their work from new angles. Some of the members have published novels, some have won literary prizes in competitions but we all enjoy both the challenge and satisfaction of expression through the written form. The group’s first anthology of short stories and poetry – Beneath a Big Sky – was published last year with the first run being a sell-out. More have been now been published and it is available on Amazon. The new anthology – Spectrum – is to be launched in Stradbroke at the Community Centre on November 4th. Full details of this event will be issued nearer the time but before then you may want to read about us and our work in a feature on us in the October issue of the EADT Suffolk Magazine on sale from the end of September or view the cover on the village website that is at www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk We would like to extend a warm invitation to everyone to come along to the launch in November and meet your friendly, local writers. Stradbroke Sports & Community Centre cinema On September 15th. we are showing “Florence Foster Jenkins” 7.00 for 7.30 pm. The Bar will be open and ice-creams will be on sale in the interval. Entrance is £5.50. “The film stars Meryl Streep as Florence Foster Jenkins, a New York heiress who became an opera singer known for her painful lack of singing skill. Based on a true story, it tells the story of a truly awful singer, cosseted in her closed world of a 1944 New York hotel and pampered by her husband St Clair Mayfield (Hugh Grant), who is otherwise entwined with the sensuous Kathleen (Rebecca Ferguson). It's impossible to describe a film as "delightful… just delightful" without hearing the velvety tones of Hugh Grant saying those words. But that's what it is. A treat of moving and at times wildly funny storytelling that just works from beginning to end. While the film's leisurely pace might make the younger set fidgety, this is a treat particularly for older viewers looking for a great night out at the cinema. "Delightful… just delightful". Future films:- Thursday 20th October, “Eddie the Eagle”, Thursday 27th October, “The Angry Birds” matinee. Thursday 17th November “ Our Kind of Traitor.” Thursday 15th December “Absolutely Fabulous”. Thursday 22nd December “ The BFG” matinee. Margaret Streeter

Written by William Shakespeare, 165 minutes (inc 15 min interval). Filmed July 2016. Principal cast: Richard Madden, Lily James, Derek Jacobi. Monday 24th October 2016 Suffolk Libraries’ Bookfest Event: ‘How to write a psychological thriller’. Erin Kelly author of ‘The Poison Tree’ (dramatized for TV), ‘The BurningAir’, ‘Broadchurch’ (the novelization of the Bafta award winning TV drama). Tickets £6, please book at the library. Erin Kelly,s psychological insight and taut plots create satisfying thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat until the end of the book! SUFFOLK LIBRARIES’ PRESENTS: Branagh Theatre: ‘The Entertainer’ on Saturday 19th November at 7.30pm. Tickets £10 please book at Library. Set against the backdrop of post-war Britain, John Osborne's modern classic conjures the seedy glamour of the old music halls for an explosive examination of public masks and private torment. Branagh's first season concludes with a production that has at its centre the memorably sad, middle-aged figure of fading music-hall star Archie Rice, whose failing career is set against the backdrop of post-Colonial decline and personal tragedy. This role was famously played by Laurence Olivier in the original 1957 production and as Branagh is frequently compared to Olivier, so anticipation will be at fever pitch when he takes on this iconic role. Principal cast: Kenneth Branagh, John Hurt, Phil Dunster, Sophie McShera. Written by John Osbourne. Filming November 2016, 180 minutes (inc 15 minute interval). In November the Courthouse Café’s famous (or infamous!) ‘World Cuisine Events’ will be back by popular demand, with 2 evenings of delicious Thai cooking. Definite dates to be confirmed but see next month’s magazine, or visit the library for details. Maureen John

Sports Roundup
Stradbroke Cricket Club Like an Olympic diving pool, the muddy waters go unnoticed when the sportsmen take over. Looking on it is difficult to believe the cricket Club is in crisis. True, results are still poor, last weeks win at Bury St. Edmunds, only the second league win of the season, but save the odd game when we have been unable to field eleven players, the enjoyment levels have been high, even when we perennially fail to put two halves of a game together. With no youth section, those junior players who remain, clearly enjoy their cricket, particularly in the 20/20 league. The policy of giving them a leading role has not weakened the team, indeed, we have won 3 out of 5 matches, & could yet reach the final. Behind the scenes, the club is putting together a five year survival plan. How successful that will be, remains to be seen, but everyone connected with the club knows the situation, & are not letting it wear them down. Keep supporting your local Cricket Club!” Michael Hugman

Comedy in Laxfield Village Hall Date: Friday 23 September 2016; Time: 7.30 start , doors open: 7 pm. Come and join us at Laxfield Village Hall for a night of laughter as we listen to the latest adventures of Suffolk Characters Ted and Lil, as played by Stephen Bayfield and Peter Holloway along with a mix of music and more comedy. Ted and Lil are two very funny old characters representative in many ways of life in rural Suffolk of years gone by. Everyone of a certain age from these parts will remember people like these two as they give a flavour of their everchanging lives, the people who are part of it, and their simple rustic philosophy on dealing with the range of challenging situations that are re-shaping their world. Be prepared to rock with laughter as tale after tale unfolds before you. Comedians Stephen and Peter will perform a series of extremely funny sketches which are a real joy. Not only are they amusing, they are spot on as observers of domestic life in all its quirkiness! Price is £13.50 per ticket which includes a 2 course hot supper & glass of wine. Advanced booking is essential as we need to know audience numbers for catering purposes, and tickets must be paid in advance. Please call Caroline or Colin on 01986 798422 or leave a message on the answerphone and we will get back to you. This will be a new fundraiser for The Colostomy Association charity 1113471, raising funds to help ostomates all over the country by way of our 24/7 helpline, dedicated quarterly magazine and valuable range of informative literature covering a wide range of useful topics for both patient & family members. Recognising the Symptoms of a Stroke A Stroke is a medical emergency; the sooner you get help and seek medical attention will help improve your chances of a good recovery. Our brain requires oxygen and other essential nutrients to function, if the blood supply is blocked or there is a bleed in the brain this will cause a Stroke. Depending on where the blockage or bleed takes place, depends on the type of symptoms that can be experienced. Some people may experience a Transient Ischaemic attack, often called a TIA, the symptoms are the same but the blockage is temporary and so are the symptoms, leading to full recovery, often within minutes or hours, but always within 24 hours. This is often called a mini stroke and is a warning that you are at risk of having a Stroke. Both require a rapid response and you should always call 999 immediately, even if your symptoms disappear after a few minutes or a few hours, you still require a medical assessment and treatment to reduce your risk of having a Stroke. How to recognise the signs and symptoms of a Stroke – If you remember the word FAST, this will help you to remember. • Facial Weakness – can you smile, has your face fallen on one side? • Arm Weakness – Can you raise both arms and keep them there? • Speech problems – Can you speak clearly and be understood? Is your speech slurred? • Time to call 999 – If you, a friend or family member experience any ONE of these symptoms, get help immediately by calling 999. For further information about Stroke or TIA, you can visit www.stroke.org.uk, or call 0303 3033 100 this will take you to the stroke association where there is lots of useful information and support. www.mycare-athome.co.uk Maggie Fisher

£50k pledges takes charity campaign into final straight A campaign to raise £714,000 to build an innovative centre for people with life-limiting illnesses in east Suffolk and south Norfolk has entered the final straight after receiving a £50,000 pledge. Halesworth Community Nursing Care Fund (HCNCF) has been awarded the generous grant towards its information and support centre (ISC) appeal from the Garfield Weston Foundation. The money takes the total raised so far to £636,410 – the equivalent of more than 89% of the target. Fundraisers are now hoping a final push will bring in the remaining money so that building work can start – and have appealed to anyone who may be able to help to get in touch. The Garfield Weston Foundation is a family-founded, grant-making trust which has been supporting charities across the UK for more than 50 years. Around 1,500 organisations each year benefit, covering areas such as health, the arts, welfare and education. The money given to HCNCF will be put towards the ISC, which aims to bring a full range of holistic services closer to home for patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, their families and carers. This includes benefits advice, wig-fitting, children and family support, complementary therapies, help understanding a diagnosis, counselling and bereavement support. The centre will be built on land adjacent to Cutlers Hill Surgery in Halesworth, and will serve people living in a 15mile radius of the town. Ted Edwards, ISC chairman, said: “We are incredibly grateful for this latest pledge, which has taken us one step closer to our target and into the final straight with our fundraising. “We will now concentrate all of our efforts into raising the remaining money and starting work on this valuable facility as quickly as possible so that local people no longer have to travel as far for help and support.” Liz Hearnshaw
Pig trail is must-see event of the summer The streets of Ipswich have been taken over by stunning swine sculptures as part of the must-see event of the summer – the Pigs Gone Wild interactive art trail! Pigs Gone Wild is the biggest art spectacular that Suffolk has ever seen with 69 beautifully decorated pig sculptures adorning the streets and corners of the town. There are 39 larger-than-life pig sculptures which have been beautifully created by artists from East Anglia and beyond, plus 30 junior sculptures decorated just as creatively by schools and community groups and displayed in clusters. You can follow the trail, which has been brought to the town by local charity, St Elizabeth Hospice in collaboration with Wild in Art, from now until 2 September, and make sure you download the official Pigs Gone Wild app – with this you can collect the pig sculptures and unlock prizes and special offers too! Norman Lloyd, Pigs Gone Wild project manager, said: “Why not enjoy the sun this summer and spend some time with your loved ones to see how many pigs can you see in one day? “The trail is fun for all ages and you never know, you might learn something about the history or heritage of Ipswich as you walk around and take in areas of the town you may not normally visit.” Make sure you take selfies with them and tweet them to @piggonewild16 or post them to the Pigs Gone Wild Facebook page www.facebook.com/pigsgonewild16 At the end of the trail, the junior pigs will be returned to the schools and community groups that created them, whilst the larger pigs will be auctioned off to raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice. To find out more about Pigs Gone Wild, how to download the app and where to pick up a trail map, visit www.pigsgonewild.co.uk Sophie Johnson

Stradbroke Monthly Column – September 2016 With Parliament’s Summer Recess period now underway, I am really enjoying spending more time back home in Suffolk and spending time rediscovering all that’s great about Central Suffolk and North Ipswich. From the swathes of farmland and open skies, to the local produce markets and the vibrant businesses in North Ipswich, summer recess gives me the opportunity to immerse myself in the constituency, something which I particularly value and relish. The school holidays are also underway now and for parents everywhere, this also brings the daily reminders of “So, what are we doing today then …?” I am sure that with the arrival of the school summer holiday period comes a frantic last minute attempt to draw up plans for childcare and days out, no mean feat when many households may have both parents working and therefore have to share the responsibility of covering childcare. Thank goodness for the goodwill of grandparents or other family members and friends. Here in Suffolk though, we are really fortunate with such a wide array of village fetes, special practical activities at our libraries and museums and park activities for all, all at little or no cost, but I was especially pleased to hear about the launch of Suffolk County Council’s initiative “Suffolk’s Fab 40 Adventures.” Launched to coincide with National Playday, the “Fab 40 Adventures” bring together a collection of activities, with something to appeal to all, but things which bring to mind the simple pleasures of growing up and letting your imagination run wild, building dens, having picnics outdoors or creating homes for nature, all of which can be done from the back garden. Activities such as these not only encourage great teambuilding and problem-solving skills which are vital things to develop as children grow, but they have the added benefit of creating wonderful new childhood memories. It’s great to see families and friends spending some quality time together outdoors enjoying the very best of Suffolk life and while we are all aware of the importance of physical exercise, it’s also recognised that enjoying time outdoors brings that “feel-good factor” and boosts mental wellbeing. Earlier this year, figures were published that more than 1 in 9 children have not set foot in a park, forest, beach or any natural environment in the last 12 months. We are incredibly spoilt here in Suffolk with a beautiful natural environment, all of it right here on our doorstep and just waiting to be discovered. Who knows where the next adventure may lie, but I hope that the Fab 40 Adventures, or perhaps just a desire to get out and enjoy the outdoors with your own family and friends will inspire many of you to spend more time outdoors this summer. I know that I am looking forward very much to rediscovering some of my own favourite spots this summer. For more information please visit my website www.drdanielpoulter.com
