The Tour Of Britain is coming through

Stradbroke! FRIDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER — WHAT IS IT? — The Tour of Britain is a multi-stage cycling race, conducted on British roads, in which participants race across Great Britain to complete the race in the fastest time. — WHAT WILL HAPPEN? — The Peloton will be coming through Stradbroke at around lunchtime. Prior to this the rolling road block will be coming through, lots of police motorbikes and cars - making sure the road is clear for the race. Stradbroke has the even bigger excitiment of being the location for Eisberg Sprint 2, meaning that the village will see an exciting sprint section. Each road stage of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain features three intermediate Sprints, where points are awarded towards the Eisberg Sprints Jersey. — BEFORE THE EVENT IN STRADBROKE — Parking! We understand that there will be parking restrictions in place along the route through Stradbroke leading up to the event. Watch the event website at www.stradsports.org.uk for more information as to which households will be affected. Overnight parking will be available at the Community Centre and gym car parks for those who cannot park outside their homes. Celebration? Towns and villages on the Tour Route usually decorate their environment to celebrate the event! In all cases spectators are always waving flags - so we have taken this as the theme! Our church has the best flags in all of Suffolk (we think!) and is not going to be missing the opportunity to go full deck party for this event! So the challenge laid down to everyone in Stradbroke is to "Fly the Flag in Stradbroke!" Mid Suffolk District Council will be awarding a prize to the best flag decoration in all of Stradbroke (not just on the route!), so get thinking! What could we do? You could make your own flags, buy a favourite or meaningful flag and fly it, fly a flag you already have, decorate every squared inch of your house and fence in bunting...? Go mad! As the race comes through Stradbroke it would be great if the riders are met with an avenue of flags! Don't forget - the race is broadcast on ITV so tell friends and family to tune in and look out for you and your flags! If you don't live on the route, don't let that put you off... TV helicopters see all flags ;-) — ON THE DAY IN STRADBROKE — Schools! Both schools are planning on bringing pupils to the event, and so areas will be allocated for the pupils to view the race from! Please help school staff by respecting these areas are for the safety and enjoyment of our village schools! Stradbroke Gym are bringing down their static bikes for spectators to have a go on and will be running a competition with prize! Watch the website and the Gym page on Facebook for up to date information.

Village ‘Get Together’

From 6pm Beefed Up Catering, The Stable Bar and Radio Stradbroke will be at the playing fields particularly for those who may have been at work and missed out the excitement at lunchtime! Everybody is welcome to come up and have a drink and some food and relax with friends. Bring friends, chairs and/or picnic blanket :-) All ages, all welcome. See you there! All latest info re: parking etc… is available on www.stradsports.org.uk

Harvest Festival Sunday 17th 10:15am Please join us as we say “Thank You” to God who creates and provides. Looking forward - Tour of Britain Cycle Race - Stradbroke The bunting will be up and the crowds out on 8th September as the cyclists pass through the village on the sixth leg of the tour from Newmarket and finishing at Aldeburgh. As the route passes the Baptist Church we intend to open our building for the benefit of spectators: our toilets will be open and refreshments will be available. Anyone is welcome to use the Church’s facilities. “The Baptists” a nickname The name Baptists was originally a nickname, a term of contempt and derision, given to non-conformist Christians whose study of the Bible convinced them that entry to the Christian faith is by personal trust in Jesus Christ followed by a public witness to faith by adult baptism. Baptists also believe that the church should be independent of the state, acting only upon belief and conscience, organized by the local members without central control to provide emotional and spiritual support in the locality. This is still our mandate today. Below is a brief history of Baptists in Stradbroke . (A more detailed history is available.) “Charles Farmery a Baptist from Worstead Norfolk sent by his church as an evangelist arrived in Diss and finding no Baptist Church there started services in 1790. Over the next ten years he visited and preached in many local villages, forming three new churches and he obtained certificates from the authorities giving permission for eleven village preaching stations. One of the churches founded by Farmery was at Horham whose members reached out into other villages including Stradbroke where a meeting house was established in 1814 and three years later in 1817 the Church was formed as a separate organization with a Mr Goldsmith as the first minister. Some few years later the current building was erected and has been used as a place of worship to the present time. Over the two hundred years many changes have taken place and I suspect our founders would not recognize the village as it is today, but the best news is that God is unchanging. He deserves our thanks and worship for the past and in His power we can be confident for the future. For details please contact: John Ling 388751 (Church Elder)

Dear Friends and Neighbours, May be it’s because I love school supplies, new stationery, pens, paper and notes books, that I love September; I think it’s also probably has a lot to do with having been a teaching assistant for ten years before I was ordained. There’s something special about a new term and a new academic year... a new beginning. Whatever the year or term has been like before; this is a fresh start, a new beginning full of expectation, hopes and new possibilities. Of course, I realise that as far as school and study is concerned this isn’t always the case for everyone and for some new beginnings can be a time of stress and anxiety, but God promises that if we trust in Him, we need not be afraid because He will be there with us. The bible is full of promises of new beginnings and God’s faithfulness to us. In Lamentations it says, that God’s compassion and love is new every morning; every morning is like a new beginning. And in 2 Corinthians is says; that anyone who belongs to Jesus has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! For me those promises are really important. It means that when things are difficult or when I get stuff wrong or mess up, God is always there, offering me a new start... and a new beginning. All I need to do is to ask for Him to forgive what I’ve got wrong and any hurt I’ve caused and then ask for His help and then start again I hope this September is good for you. I pray it’ll be a time of new beginnings, new possibilities, and new hopes, and perhaps a time when you can ask God’s forgiveness for things that have gone before and then claim that promise for yourself from 2 Corinthians that in Jesus all things are made new. God Bless, Cathy

The Stradbroke WI

Stradbroke WI July and August reports. July seems a long chilly time ago and our meeting a distant memory. Actually it was a straightforward evening of business followed by an interesting talk from a lady called Denise Billinghurst who told us of her time in Africa where she frequently travelled. The main purpose of her visits was to assist at a lion orphanage where rescued lion cubs were raised and helped back into the wild on a safe reserve .We were treated to some fascinating photos of lion cubs at various stages of their care and rehabilitation and, surprisingly, photos of Denise up close and personal with some oversized pussycats. Denise was obviously an enthusiast and had also embroiled her husband in her fund raising and visits to Africa. An interesting lady and a pleasant evening for us all. Now we are in August and that means our summer supper organised and served by the committee. The members played their part by turning up in their summery finery ready for a special evening and happily partook of a splendid glass of Pimms or fruit drink to get the party going. Before we got down to the serious business of having fun Moira Gibling put forward her suggestion for a resolution to be sent to headquarters for consideration. This resolution says that the W.I. consider the ritual slaughter of animals without being stunned for religious purposes is barbaric and inhumane and totally unacceptable in this country. The resolution says this practice should be banned and urges the government to act urgently. Moira spoke eloquently on this most unpleasant of subjects and a vote at the end was unanimous in agreement with her proposition and that it should go forward to headquarters. Business over we moved on to serving up a delicious summer salad buffet to our members who were all in great form as they took their food back to beautifully decorated tables for a good chat and satisfying supper . All went well and we moved on to the entertainment . Now hold on to your hats folks as I tell you that we gathered in teams for a tournament of tiddlywinks, yes that’s right tiddlywinks and it was so much fun and there was so much laughter that the rest of the evening disappeared in a flash. The raffle was called and thanks were expressed to the committee and to Wendy and her marigolds plus others who swept in and washed up as if they had done this for years which of course they have. A great evening and we all left feeling good. Our next meeting is on 14th September when Patricia Woodward will be doing a craft demonstration titled “Poppies”. Do come and try us out. Prue Rush

Our next outing will be to Clacton on 14th September, and our September meetings will be on the 7th and 21st. You are all welcome to come along and join us at the Community Centre 2.00 till 4.00. Stradbroke Primary News

We ended another great academic year at Stradbroke Primary with a good set of SATs results. It was sad to say goodbye to our lovely Year 6 pupils- but we sent them off with a moving Leaver’s service and fun barbeque. The children gave amazing performances in our end of year production “The Adventures of Super Stan” which was watched by their friends and families. Pupils also enjoyed a residential visit to the Peak District with the other Year 6 pupils from Primary schools in our pyramid. In the Summer Term we held lots of exciting events for the pupils. Norwich Puppet Theatre came to perform “The Pied Piper” for our children. Year 2 and 3 from Stradbroke Primary and Year 3 and 4 from Laxfield Primary visited Norwich Theatre Royal to watch a production of “Fantastic Mr Fox”. The children really enjoyed this visit with our partner school and we were enabled to reduce the cost to parents by sharing the cost of the visit, especially transport costs. We were really pleased that four of our teachers have been accredited as Specialist Support Teachers. This is a nationally recognised accreditation through NCTL. Our Executive Headteacher is a National Leader of Education and our Chair of Governors a National Leader of Governance. This is an incredible skill set for one small school! The village should be very proud that our local school is recognised so highly at a National level! At the end of this term we rounded up our exciting overarching Curriculum topic for this year on “Legends and Legacies” by taking the children on a visit to Banham Zoo to learn more about conservation. Each class had a special talk from staff at the zoo to find out more about the important work relating to conservation that the organisation does. We are really looking forward to the new academic year. There has been lots of building work going on over the Summer at the Primary school as a new heating system and boilers have been installed at the school. Our fantastic Friends of School have raised a great deal of money to install a new stage area at the front of the school for our children to use and we are looking forward to that being delivered this term. We welcome lots of new children and their families to our school. There are many great events to look forward to including our Harvest Festival and Farmer’s Market, Maths Café and many school visits- it is exciting to be back! Melanie Barrow, Executive Headteacher

Stradbroke Archive and Records Association

Recently we were looking through some of the archives and came across an article given to us by the late Reverend David Streeter. Unfortunately, it isn’t sourced or dated but none the less worthy of an airing. It’s headed Stradbroke Parish Council and reads: ‘The council was formed in 1894 when 13 councillors were elected. Their early meetings were mainly concerned with the village charities, the cemetery and the churchyard, and the fire brigade. . . . . ‘ On 29th September 1898 a resolution was made to the District council stating that the water supply in the town pond ‘. . . was very insufficient and that what is now obtainable leading to the pump be made deeper.’ Both the pump (behind the Library) and the pond (Willow Close) are still there. The article goes on to say, ‘On May 3rd, 1918, it was agreed by the council that a Sparrow and Rat Club be started. That 6d. per dozen be paid for old sparrows, that 3d. per dozen be paid for young sparrows, that 3d per dozen be paid for sparrows’ eggs, that 2d. each should be paid for each rat brought. NB. Rats MUST be old or large ones. The village was divided into three districts: The Street, Ashfield Green, Battlesea Green. Three councillors were appointed Receivers. In the hope of reducing the number of Cabbage butterflies both white and yellow, it was decided to pay school children one penny per score for all brought in each Monday at 12 o’clock. The funds to meet this expense to be collected off the members of the Parish Council.’ To explain, the village were culling these creatures to get the numbers down. On the subject of guns : ‘On 13th January 1928, it was stated that a permit must be obtained for rifles which had been presented to the Council as war trophies. It was agreed that the Clerk should approach the school managers as to whether they should have them placed in the school’s care’. Just imagine! SARA

'Saving All Saints'

We heard from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in June that we had not been successful in this round for obtaining a grant. However, their letter stated that “you have submitted a very strong application and project and the reason for you not gaining the grant in this instance is because the state of All Saints Church is not as urgent as others.” It seems that other churches are on the point of collapse while ours is still standing. HLF have changed their grant system and actively encouraged us to apply for a new one firmly based on preserving the heritage so we have submitted a new application for £285,000. This application was based on the same project but expanded on all the activities. The same architect is being employed and the same plans for improvement as exhibited in the church but new ideas for really putting All Saints Church on the cultural map have been included. We shall hear the result of this application in December so we are hoping for a special Christmas gift. Do visit the village website: stradbrokeonline.org.uk where details of the application are posted. SAS Committee

Food with Friends

Whilst a lot of us are not ‘Churchgoers’, most of us like to see the Church, as we walk around the Village and would really miss it, if it wasn’t there. You will read of valiant fund-raising efforts, to help maintain the structure, so that the Church will be there for future generations. One of these fund-raising efforts is ‘Food with Friends’ (or to give its full title ‘Food with Friends for Fun and Funds’) and has been running for 2 years, proving to be very popular and successful. We have had formal dinners, informal suppers, a BBQ, a Champagne Breakfast and an old fashioned English High Tea, all of which have been ‘fully booked’. Each member (individual or co-hosts) is allocated a month and then notifies the other members of their event, but only the first 6 or 7 people to reply are then invited, so that 8 people sit down together, to enjoy a meal and conversation. Each guest pays £15, resulting in £90 being added to the fund each month, to help save this wonderful historic building from falling into disrepair. Not too arduous and certainly very enjoyable. The events have proved so popular, that our next venture may well be to organise a Slimming Club! We now find that, due to health issues, we have vacancies for more hosts, to join our merry band, so if you would like more information, then please contact Jennie on 01379 388681 or jennieandcolin@googlemail.com

Stradbroke Community Centre

Stradbroke Community Centre – Bookings Manager Urgently needed The Community Centre is at the hub of most things going on in the village. It is the “centre of the community” from sporting activities and Keep Fit classes to club meetings and major social events. The bookings manager is key to all these activities. We have so far been unable to find someone to take over since the previous incumbent retired last year. Since then we have computerised the process, reducing the workload and making bookings easier for everyone. So: If you are someone who has lived in the village for a long time and would like to give a little something back to the community .......Ring 388382 Or: If you are someone relatively new to the village and would like to get more involved with village life and all that happens in Stradbroke .......Ring 388382 Or: If you are neither of the above, but simply want something to occupy your spare time and help others in the village ...... Ring 388382 As the bookings manager your help will make a real difference to all that happens in our village. So: why not get in touch and Ring Jane on 388382 and find out more about what the job entails. Jane Merrit SCC Chairman

Radio Stradbroke

Stradisphere seems a lifetime ago already, but so intense is the whole weekend, that Radio Stradbroke decided to take a summer holiday afterwards. The tan has now faded, but not the enthusiasm to broadcast. Sunday Sessions are back underway, we have already paid tribute to Pirate Radio, & the 80s, depending when you read this, we are also breaking new ground with a 'live' Sunday Session from the Playing Field on August 27th, an hors d'oeuvres to the main course, which is a fun run & fund raiser in memory of Hayley Adams. We are proud to be part of the day, acting as PA as well as playing some of Hayleys favourite songs to inspire the runners. You don't have to run, just come along from 3pm & say hello, & throw money! Another example of the ever evolving Radio Stradbroke, is that we can now be listened to on TuneIn Radio, alongside some of the heavyweights of radio broadcasting. Keep supporting Radio Stradbroke. Stradbroke’s Neighbourhood Plan Report

Firstly I would like to put everyone’s mind at rest, the neighbourhood plan committee is still going and as it is a committee of the Parish council will continue to keep working towards building Stradbroke’s neighbourhood plan. We have welcomed new committee members Ann Readman, James Hargrave and Alex Bloss, to work alongside myself as the Chair and my fellow Parish councillors Chris Edwards and Lynsey Smith. We are also delighted that Odile Wladon the Parish Clerk has agreed to take on the role of clerk to the N.P alongside her role as Clerk to the PC. The new committee is made up of a great mix of people from the community, some with specific expertise and others like myself who are bringing their various views and opinions that will all help build a neighbourhood plan that’s right for Stradbroke. Unfortunately development of the village is unavoidable BUT it does not mean that we can’t try and get the best out of it for our Village. We will be working hard to ensure the plan works to provide the support and structure Stradbroke needs with the growth of the village. We will be working alongside schools, businesses and land owners of potential development sites as well as working hard on all the other elements of the neighbourhood plan. Disappointingly the handover from the old committee to new did not contain as much of the village’s information as ideally there could have been, because of this we have decided to move back the public consultations, that were due to be presented at the CARnival, by just a few weeks, they will now be held on the afternoon of Tuesday 17th October & the evening of Thursday 19th October, more information will follow in the next Monthly issue. It’s been a busy few weeks for us all and I would like to thank all the new committee members and Odile for all the hard work they have been putting in. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 6th September at 7.30pm at the Courthouse. All our meetings are open to the public and we would like to encourage all members of the community to come along, you will be more than welcome to join us and opinions given will be valued! Ellie Wharton

Parish Council News

The school holidays are nearly over unfortunately but it has been brilliant to see the new equipment at both play areas being well used. I have visited both play parks with my 9 year old grandson who loves the zip wire. Well done to Ellie and her fundraisers for all their hard work and passion to bring this to a brilliant outcome, without them Stradbroke would not have these fantastic facilities. I also must say well done to Jo and Brett Baber and all their fellow helpers who together again achieved a successful Stradisphere I went on Friday night it was great to see lots of people there enjoying the music. Well Done. Due to the resignation of the Footpath warden we now have a vacancy also we are looking for someone to take on the post of Tree warden which when we first moved to Stradbroke my late mother took on the role which she found really interesting, if anyone would like to take on these roles please contact our Parish clerk. There are 3 vacancies on the Parish Council if anyone is interested in joining our team please send in your letter of application to our parish clerk Odile Wladon by letter or email by 8th September applicants will be invited to attend the next parish council meeting on the 11th September. Carrie Barnes, Chairman Stradbroke Parish Council

Stradbroke Cinema

Our new seasons of films start on Thursday 21st September with The Viceroy’s House. Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 7.30. The bar is open before the start and during the interval along with ice creams for sale. Everyone is welcome, entrance is £5.50 for adults and £3 for 16s and under. ‘The Viceroy’s House’ is a heartfelt and very personal/political drama directed by Gurinder Chadha and having exceptional performances by Hugh Bonneville and Gillian Anderson. They are the Mountbattens in India at the tense period of hand-over from the British and the eventual partition. This film is a handsome period drama that includes all the trauma of that time yet has a strong romantic thread running through it. Perhaps the story of the Mountbattens is over-simplified but it is the tale of the Indians battling for their new country that steal the show. Chadha’s family appear at the end as witnesses to the events and their stories will deeply move any audience. The other 3 films taking us up to Christmas are: ‘Their Finest’. Love is in the ruins of the blitz and the dusty offices of the Ministry of Information film unit. This is a sweet-natured comedy with Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy ‘Churchill’. Brian Cox as the wartime leader haunted by fears about the Normandy Landings ‘A Sense of an Ending’. A blast from the past for a grumpy divorcee with excellent performances from Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling and Harriet Walters. Full details can be found on the village website at www.stradbrokeonline.org.uk Roger Turkington and Jane Merritt .

As well as the main event there is a Have-a-go stand for those who have not had a chance to try shooting - all equipment and instruction is included in a small fee. We do ask that participants adhere to the request to use fibre wad cartridges only as the fields are otherwise use for Peter's cattle. It will be good to see you there. Julie Thompson

I think I might be barking!

In my dictionary the meaning of ‘to retire’ is defined as ‘to give up work, withdraw, go away, exit, depart, shut oneself away, absent oneself’. Having no wish ‘to absent myself’ when I retired I made it my mission to find something new which would be both enjoyable and enlightening. Now, over two years on, I have witnessed fire exploding through the Houses of Parliament, mined Afghanistan for treasured lapis lazuli, photographed the dazzling friends of Julia Margaret Cameron, and rescued Jews with the Cook Sisters. Over the next few months I will get tips on Swedish style from the Larssons, visit the SackvilleWest’s garden, and explore the Wilderness of Zin with T.E. Lawrence, and all from the comfort of my chair in the newly renovated Diss Corn Hall auditorium. Attending The Arts Society Diss lectures is brilliant. We have one ninety minute lecture per month, given by a highly-respected figure from the world of art, antiques, history or travel. We draw our members from a wide circle of towns and villages surrounding Diss. It’s great to meet new people and to find out about subjects I might never have considered investigating, sometimes followed up by a trip to a museum, gallery or historic house. For more information please have a look at our website at http://dissdfas.org.uk or just come along. Doors open at 1.30pm on a Tuesday and the next sessions are 19th September, 17th October and 21st November 2017. Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) said ‘Don't think of retiring from the world until the world will be sorry that you retire. I hate a fellow whom pride or cowardice or laziness drives into a corner, and who does nothing when he is there but sit and growl. Let him come out as I do, and bark.’ I think I might be barking. I do hope so. Sue Horne, The Arts Society Diss

Heveningham Hall Country Fair 2017

This was a fantastic year, helped by the very good weather and it would appear that everyone came and drank tea and ate cake. Each year villagers are asked to bake cakes and to donate raffle and tombola prizes. People are so generous with their donations and also in giving their time to stewarding and volunteering over the weekend. The money raised through all the cake baking and refreshments and raffle/tombola prize donations were as follows: Courtyard Tearoom and Tea Tent: Total = £9385 Tombola: Total = £1533 Raffle: Total = £1129 The money raised is for local communities for village and school projects, church repairs and individual cases of need. A fantastic effort, thank you everyone! Date for your diaries Sat November 4th Heveningham Hall Fireworks. Please let Julie Collet, 01986 798258, know if you are able to help in anyway. Stradbroke Cricket Club

Having bemoaned the fact that the Cricket Club had received five concessions already this Summer, it has bitten us right back this week, as we were forced to concede a League game, with only seven fit & available players. Whether the stop start nature of the season has had an effect on availability, is not an exact science, but the frustration level is high, particularly as we had won back to back games for the first time this season. One benefit of my monthly Chinese water torture has been the return of one lapsed player, eager to help us in our plight. Who says complaining gets you nowhere? We still have two home league fixtures left v Eye (Saturday 2nd Sept), & Yoxford (Saturday 9th Sept), plus two Sunday friendlies in the month, then the Presidents Match on September 17th. Come along & support us! We have also commenced our long term plan by coaching youngsters at Stradbroke, Wilby, Laxfield, & Fressingfield Primary Schools, boosting our Junior Membership. It will be interesting to see how many still remember what cricket is, come the Spring. Finally, early notice of our Annual Horse Race Evening on Saturday 30th September at The Community Centre. Entry £8 per person (Inc Fish & Chips). May I have numbers please by Wednesday 27th September. There is all the usual fun of owning a horse, betting etc, + a bar & raffle. Remember it is the last day that the old £1 coin is legal tender, so come along & spend them before it is too late! Keep supporting your local Cricket Club, particularly on September 30th. The allotment chicken co-op has been running more or less since the site was up and running. We keep a flock of chickens and share the care of them so no one has to do it all. We have had numerous people involved, mostly plot holders but some not. At present we are down to two people so we are looking to get one or two more as people have left due to ill health or moving further away. All it requires is letting them out in the morning, making sure they have food and water, mucking out the sheds a little, just to clear the night waste. (It only takes a few minutes). Then going back and closing them up at night by which time you will have a few eggs to take home. SIMPLES. On an average day you get about 5 eggs. We have just incorporated a small flock of bantams so there are a few bantam eggs now too. Anyone interested in being involved in chicken keeping could try it just one day a week to start if they wanted. Ideally we are looking to cover two or three days. If you want to know more, please ring us:Kay 388393 or email Sue Childs iandschilds@btinternet.com Now here's a great recipe if you have eggs to spare like I do at the moment. It originates from the Limousin region of France RHUBARB CLAFOUTIS 500g/1lb rhubarb chopped into small pieces, 1-2 tbsp sugar, handful of cherries. For the batter 2tbsp plain flour, 50g/2oz ground almonds, 125g/4oz caster sugar, 2 whole eggs, 2 egg yolks, 250ml/9fl oz milk. Oven 190c. Add Rhubarb to pan with sprinkling of water and the sugar (First lot) and cook gently for 5 mins. Remove with slotted, spoon and place in buttered oven dish. Scatter cherries over if using. Add batter ingredients together and whizz up then pour over Rhubarb mixture. Bake about 25 mins till risen and golden then serve warm with cream. YUM. Other fruits can be used like apples pears and plums and it is nice cold for breakfast. Lastly we still have spare plots on the allotments as people come and go due to moving etc. No need to take on a full sized plot if you only need a small bit. Any takers just get in touch. Now that the Parliamentary summer recess is well underway, it’s always refreshing to spend all of my time at home in Suffolk and to get back to the grass roots of being a constituency MP. Although the August weather hasn’t been as fair to us as we would potentially have liked, the season of village fetes, garden parties and school summer holiday activities are reaching their peak. Every weekend it seems there are a whole raft of events to choose from and it’s really lovely to see families spending some quality time together outdoors enjoying the very best of Suffolk life. As the Parliamentary business drew to a close, I was pleased to hear the announcement by the Education Secretary that there will be an additional £1.3 billion for schools funding over the next two years, helping to create even more good school places in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich. I have been pushing for fairer funding for our schools here in Suffolk for some time now and although the final figures are yet to be finalised for each area, the announcement by Education Secretary, the Rt. Hon. Justine Greening, MP is sure to provide a welcome boost to the core schools budget, delivering the biggest improvements to the school funding system for over a decade. In addition to existing fairer schools funding, this new announcement will mean an increase in the basic amount that every pupil will get, as well as ensuring protected funding for those with high needs. It will also ensure that every local authority, including here in Suffolk, will be in a position to give schools a cash increase through the new formula. In 2018/19 all local authorities will receive some increase over the amount they plan to spend on schools and high needs in 2017/18. I regularly visit schools across Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, meeting with staff and pupils and it would be fair to say that funding is always high on the agenda. Suffolk is a predominantly rural county and it is already known that the cost per pupil funding is significantly lower than other areas in the country. This recent announcement will bring an end to the postcode lottery of school funding. Schools in Suffolk have historically been underfunded and I look forward to seeing this new funding coming through very soon, when amounts are finalised for local authorities in September. This welcome boost in funding will help to ensure that children here in Suffolk receive the education that they deserve. I have been working hard and pressing Government to bring forward more funding for Suffolk’s schools for some time now and I will continue to do so, in order that every child here in Suffolk can receive the best possible education and the best possible opportunities for their future. Whilst I am pleased that schools here in Suffolk are set to receive more money, I will be watching closely to see how the figures shape up for Suffolk, when they are released in September.
