Your Editor Speaks... Is it, or isn’t it? In last month’s magazine we printed an article showing a photograph, which was said to be “Fig Tree Cottage” and suggesting that the photograph was taken on the North side of New Street, just past the Wilby Road turn off. In my mailbag this month was a letter from the current owner of the property casting doubt on this and suggesting that the photograph is possibly Maybush and could have been taken from the upper floor of the Coach House that belonged to the Old Rectory, but it’s difficult to know as neither the Coach House or the Old Rectory still exists. I have to say that as a newcomer to Stradbroke I don’t know, but I bet that there are people who read this magazine who do and it would be great to hear from you! Tony Ambler

Stradbroke Parish Council The Parish Pump! From the Parish Council Meeting of 11th June 2007... Planning The following decisions have been received from Mid Suffolk District Council . Granted Approval :

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: Monday 9th July 2007 7.30pm At the Community Centre .

0894/06 Single storey extension etc, Southview, Laxfield Road 0060/07 Erection of single storey extension, alterations & garage, 7 Eastlands 1118/07 Remove one conifer, Waveney Cottage, Queens St Application refused : 0661/07 Change of use/3 holiday homes to single residence at Watermeadow Cottages, Neaves Lane Applications considered by the Parish Council 1482/07 Erection of cottage-style dwelling with on-side parking Land at former hairdressing salon, Doctors Lane Following consideration of application no. 1482/07 the Council agreed to recommend refusal. It was felt that the modifications made to the original application were positive but still did not address the real concerns that such a structure would have a detrimental effect on neighbouring properties and the street as a whole if it were to go ahead as per the plan submitted. •

For more information about the Parish Council and it’s work go to stradbroke.org.uk and follow the link on the front page.

Cllrs Readman & Seabrook attended the pre-application site meeting at the Old Coach Yard, Church Street with a representative of the Planning Department and District Cllr Stuart Gemmill. It was proposed that three dwellings be built on the site. This appeared to fit both in scale, appearance and access requirements. At the pre-application site meeting at 1 / 2 Westhall proposing a backfill development of 4 dwellings questions of access were raised. No formal application had yet been submitted. The questions of parking at the proposed development site on Queens Street (garage site) had still not been answered by MSDC. Building opposite “Coppings Cottage”, Church St – some adverse comments had been received about the building of a porch but confirmation had been received from the Enforcement Officer that planning permission was not required as the porch was within the parameters allowed.

Coronation Gates Cllr Mike Smith was able to advise the Council that the gates had originally been purchased with money raised in the village for that purpose. A site visit was made to consider the placement of the gates. Mark Peacock and Nick Stones would liaise with the contractor in the siting and erection of the gates. Parish Plan A Parish Plan for 2007/8 was approved and the Council would be working towards completion of as many of the issues as possible within the year. Westhall Play Park The equipment had been ordered and another site meeting was to be arranged to finalise details. Further seating for various sites in the village will be considered at the next meeting.

Life in the Legion The June Monthly Meeting of The Branch was a visit to Alan Smith’s terrific garden in nearby Hoxne, and was attended by 25 members. Alan gave us a guided tour plus he played his two Fairground Organs. Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins gave a vote of thanks, and he also thanked Graham Neale, The Assistant Secretary, for making all the arrangements. Afterwards we all enjoyed lunch in the Hoxne Swan. Jeremy Higgins and I took part in the annual Suffolk County RBL Walk held recently around Sudbury. We raised £230 for The County Benevolent Fund, and our thanks go to all who sponsored us. Six members attended the recent quarterly H Group meeting held at the Metfield Duke William. It was decided that this year instead of a Group Rally there will be a Church Service at Oakley Church on Sunday July 1st starting at 6.30pm. All are welcome. The Branch once again had a stand at this year’s Horham Bygones Country Fair, and much interest was shown about what our organisation has to offer. A collection for The Poppy Appeal raised £276.52. The next Branch Meeting is on Thursday July 5th and will be held at our usual venue The Queens Head starting at 11.30am. The Guest Speaker will be Dr Duffy, a retired Canadian Doctor. As usual we hope as many members as possible can attend. Finally to all members going away on holiday this year you are reminded that The Royal British Legion Clubs will welcome you but please have your membership Cards with you. Michael Burton - Chairman.

We had a wonderful evening; the food was superb, the puddings delicious and we all tucked in and enjoyed it!

We had to hold our Garden Party Meeting in the Community Centre due to some rather heavy rain but we made the hall look great by creating a garden on the stage complete with flowers, duck pond, and a picnic and parasols. We had a wonderful evening; the food was superb, the puddings delicious and we all tucked in and enjoyed it! Our brains were tested by a bird quiz and flower competition thanks to Sue Gray our President. There were a total of 52 people present including guests from other Women’s Institutes and, judging by the laughter and chat, everyone had a great evening – I know I did! Lily Lofts won the bursary, which we are giving this year, so it’s well done Lily. Thanks to you all for making it a very successful evening. At our May meeting, we held a minute’s silence in memory of Pauline Turner who died in April. Pauline was a member of our Women’s Institute for 20 years and served on committee as Vice President and Press Secretary: we shall miss Pauline being with us. We have donated £50 to the hospice, in which Pauline spent a short while, in her memory. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 12th July at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre; maybe we will see you there? Iris Badcock Press Secretary An apology On behalf of the publishing team I would like to apologise to the Women’s Institute for the omission of their articles in the last copy June 2007. The articles were, unfortunately missed and I would like to ensure readers and article providers that we are working to improve our processes to alleviate any reoccurrence of this oversight. Sadly the articles included a report about Pauline Turner, one of their long-standing members, who sadly passed away. Pauline was a member for 20 years, served on the committee, was the press secretary and Vice President and who will be genuinely missed and an advertisement for an Open Evening on the 22nd June, where Gail Hussey would have been speaking about the sterling work performed by the East Anglian Air Ambulance service. Stradbroke Parish Council - Guidelines for lighting bonfires At this time of year when people want to be outside in their gardens a bonfire in a neighbouring garden can be a nuisance and in some cause a real health hazard for people with respiratory or heart disease. If you must have a bonfire, please could everyone follow these guidelines:

only burn dry material; never burn household rubbish, rubber tyres, or anything containing plastic, foam or paint; never use old engine oil, meths or petrol to light the fire or encourage it; avoid lighting a fire in unsuitable weather conditions - smoke hangs in the air on damp, still days and in the evening; be considerate to your neighbours - if it is windy, smoke may be blown into neighbours gardens and across roads;

avoid burning when air pollution in your area is high or very high - check the weather forecast, or the air quality website; Alternatives to a bonfire can be to compost green waste or take all waste to the Mid Suffolk Household Waste site at Eye Road, Brome. Thank you your co-operation. Carol Smy Clerk, Stradbroke Parish Council

Neighbourhood Watch You’re in good company when you’re with Neighbourhood Watch www.neighbourhoodwatch.net I would like to let everyone know that I am resigning my post of Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator as from the end of July ‘07. I have been involved for the last 16 years but this seemed the ideal time to ‘put my feet up’ as there will a new police neighbourhood community team in place for the village. I would like to thank all those that have helped over the years and helped to make the village a safer place. I can honestly say that it has been very rewarding, worthwhile and interesting. If there is anyone who would be willing to take on the role please could they ring: Theresa Jones on 01473 383388. Joan Hawkes

From the stradbroke.org.uk message board... “There is to be an invasion of PULHAM descendants in the village Saturday 14th July at The Queens Head. Roughly 30 or more of us will be retracing the steps of our ancestors who made Stradbroke their home for more than 300 years. It should be a fun day for us and I do hope we're not a nuisance to the kind people of Stradbroke! So should you see funny odd people with sticky labels with their names on their shirts looking lost , please don't feed them ( although none will bite ) just re direct back to either The Queens Head or the Local Church.......... thank you!” Deborah, County Down, N.I

Stradbroke Cricket Club In between showers the Cricket Club has been a mixed bag. The 1st XI have managed a win at Felixstowe (David Allum 3 for 25 & 63 not out, Tim Courridge 51) followed by defeats at Woolpit, where Donovan Steward beat the highest score in Stradbroke’s history with 167 not out, and at Yoxford (Steward 27, Courridge 33, James Grigg 30). By contrast the A Team continue to remain unbeaten, with wins over BT (Allum 43,) & Kesgrave (Allum 71, Simon Higgins 67, Steve Warner 3 for 10). Victory continues to elude the B Team, narrow defeats at Rosary Cavaliers (James Gilbee 5 for 35, Sam Johnson 3 for 23, Simon Tarr 30), Brantham (Tarr 3 for 27, Alex Fitchett 30, James Ling 29)& St.Margarets (Ben Flatt 40, Michael Hugman 31, Gilbee 3 for 16. Flatt 3 for 33). Defeats for the Academy XI against Sudbourne were notable for 50 by Scott Turner & 3 for 19 for Johnson, followed by 3 for 16 from Josh Franklin-Mann, and 34 from Hugman on his 500th appearance for the Club. It has been a slow start for the youngsters, but I can report a win for the girls against Felixstowe. Further good news for the girls is the selection of 13 yo Ellie Johnson for the Suffolk Under 15’s. The next fund raising event is a Walkabout treasure hunt around the village on Friday 6th July. It starts from the Sports Pavilion at 6.15pm. Entry is £2 per person (£1 concessions) or £5 for a family. There will be refreshments at the Queens Head after. It is fun, healthy, and helps the carbon footprint. Michael Hugman

Stradbroke Tennis Club On the 27th July from 3.00pm onwards, I will be hosting a Mini Fete, Cream Tea’s and BBQ at Pump Cottage, Queenss Street, in aid of the Tennis Club funds. Your support would be appreciated. Mary Ellis
