Stradbroke Summer Walks 2009 Do join us for three guided summer rambles along our local footpaths. All are welcome. Each walk starts from the Community Centre at 6.45 p.m. promptly. Walk 1. Thursday June 25th at 6.45 p.m. An evening walk to Doggets and the Battlesea Green Area (3.5 miles). Walk 2. Thursday July 2nd at 6.45 p.m. An evening walk past Stradbroke Mill out to Pixey Green and then back by a different way returning via Drapers Hill and exploring the paths to the north-east of the village. (4.5 miles). Walk 3. Thursday July 9th at 6.45 p.m An evening walk to Wootten Green and Neaves Lane, then out to Wilby and back using a different route, exploring the paths to the south and southeast of the village. (5 Miles) There is no need to book, just come along. If you do not know where our local paths are, this is a very good way to find out. Next Meeting will be Wednesday 24th Reviewing “The Shack” A book called “The Shack” was one of the recent best sellers in America. It portrays a man whose daughter was kidnapped and subsequently killed. The story tells of the distress of the father, and how he tries to come to terms with the terrible anguish that he goes through. The book has a Christian theme of love and forgiveness running through it, and if you can read past the first 60 or so pages, it becomes a very intense drama of how the father deals with coming to terms with his feelings of anger, hatred, depression and all that goes with the loss of a child. The father receives an invitation to return to the shack where the terrible murder of his child took place. This invitation turns out to be the most wonderful but very painful emotional experience. He experiences God in an incredible way. I won’t tell you any more, but why not get the book and find out the whole story! The Bible teaches that we have a God who cares so deeply for us that he longs to be part of our lives to bring forgiveness, healing and wholeness into our lives. Jesus wants to help us in our pain and sorrow, but we need to trust him first by allowing him into our lives by asking him to forgive us for those bad things that are in our lives. He can then begin to help us deal with our sorrows, and rejoice with us in our joys. If you choose to read The Shack, enjoy it, and maybe you might consider reading the Bible, which, not being fictional is the truth. Enjoy your reading. Jackie

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee The Art Exhibition was well supported and was enjoyed by many visitors raising £1876.52. Thanks to all who helped by putting up screens to manning the church, with special thanks to Anne and Jeremy for all their help. The fashion show was also successful raising £204 and Janet, Pat, Dianne, Margaret and Mary ably modelled the clothes, which were from Polly’s Place. We have another Cake Stall on the 23rd May. The event for June is the Gardens Open on the 28th where 10 gardens will be on show between 11.00 am and 6.00pm with Coffee in the Rectory, and Cream Teas at the Old Doctors house. More Gardens to view would still be welcome so come on and open your garden to visitors by contacting me on 384642 for inclusion to the list. On July 24th we have a Flower Show with demonstrations by Jenny Baker and on the 25th 9.00 am until 1.00 pm, we have the Village Garage Trail around the village, where you can have a pitch for £5.00 and sell all your unwanted items for cash. The Stradbroke Games on Sunday, 7th June, 2.00 – 5.00 pm gives us a splendid chance to be active and energetic, and to raise funds for our groups and clubs. I shall be there raffling two cakes. There will be more flowers in the Church at Athelington on Saturday and Sunday 27th and 28th June, as June 29th is St Peter’s Day. After Mattins at 11.00 am, there is a Lunch at Meadow Farm. Please ask me if you would like to buy tickets for the lunch. That Sunday, 28th June, is also our “Open Gardens Day” in Stradbroke, with Morning Coffee at The Rectory, and Cream Teas later for a real “Day Out” in our own village. Parish Council Meeting 11 May 2009 This was the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council and three members of the public attended. Now Velda Lummis has joined the council there is a vacant seat in the audience. Do come along. Ann Kerr was unanimously elected Chairman and, by a majority vote, Nick Stones was elected Vice Chairman. Members of the various working parties were elected for the 2009/10 term but all councillors can be approached on all subjects. They are here to help and promote the village. Planning The following decisions granting Planning Approval have been received from Mid Suffolk District Council: 0598/09 erection of a conservatory & porch Watermeadow Lodge, Neaves Lane 0209/09 erection of single storey extension to dwelling with re-roofing over flat roof adjacent 2 Rookery Cottages, Battlesea Green The following applications were for consideration: 1086/09 erection of replacement agricultural building Holly Tree Farm, Barley Green 1175/09 erection of first floor side extension above existing garage. Erection of conservatory to rear. 10 Bishops Way 0776/09 New garage/cart-lodge for both units including associated landscape (sic) Land south of White House Farm, Diss Road Approval was recommended unanimously for the above applications News Items There are ever more twists and turns in the drainage project. In order to satisfy the requirements of a grant application to the English Cricket Board (ECB) a specialist pitch consultant had to be called in to report on the Playing Field. A site visit has taken place. Changes to the original specification may be needed but the Council is assured that this will mean that the playing surface will be of more benefit to all users. It has been noted that the some young people have made “cycle ramps” and a “den” on the west side of the playing field. We understand that youngsters need to find outlets for their energy and areas to make their own however the cutting down of trees, digging of holes and cutting of turf from the playing field is unacceptable behaviour and unfair to other users. The situation is being resolved. The Council was pleased to offer its support to Don Darling’s ideas for a village games both as a fun event and as a selection run for the inter village sports team There have been many favourable comments on the new look magazine. The copier is working well and has greatly streamlined production. Life in the Legion Lt General Sir Christopher Wallace KCB DL was the Guest Speaker at the mid day monthly meeting of the branch. He had traveled all the way from his home in Hampshire to talk to us about The History of the Victoria Cross, and he brought along a sample of the medal for the 18 members present to see. It has so far been awarded to 1,358 servicemen. Committee Member Tom Moore, who had arranged the visit, thanked him for a most interesting talk. During the business part of the meeting I welcomed Fressingfield Branch Officers Ben Symonds and Nick Eade to the meeting together with Albert Daisley who lives in Laxfield. The recent H Group Meeting hosted by The Branch was discussed together with The Annual Suffolk County RBL Sponsored Walk at Rendlesham, and The Horham Bygones Rally at which the Branch will have a stand. Our new Branch Treasurer Roy Neil presented his first report. The next Branch Monthly Meeting will be on Thursday June 4th at 11.30 am and the Guest Speaker will be Michael Cole from Laxfield on his ‘Life Experiences’. Members please attend if you can. Margaret Lockwood Memorial Quiz The eighth annual quiz evening in memory of Margaret was held in the Community Centre on Friday May 1st 2009. The event was well supported with 14 tables competing for the shield. The winners on the night were Worligigs who came in at the last to defend and retain their title, our congratulations to them. Thank you to all who helped stage this event yet again, to Peter for manning the bar, Sue for selling raffle tickets and of course to Michael for helping to host the evening as question master. Grateful thanks to all the people who donated raffle prizes and to everyone who came and made the evening a success, including donations we raised £235.00 for St Elizabeth Hospice in Ipswich. Our meeting in May certainly went with a swing! After the business of the evening was done, our president, Sue Grey, welcomed Anne Etheridge and her husband Mel, from Roydon, Anne had come to speak to us about her “Passion for Plants” and working alongside Alan Bloom at Bressingham. What a treat we had. Anne had brought to us a wonderful display of many plants, from foliage plants to damp loving plants and those that bask in the sun. We learned how to deal with the many slugs on our Hostas, in various ways, what to plant where and how to get the best displays from our gardens. We clamoured to buy her lovely plants just needing a never-ending chequebook! Joyce Lee gave a very deserved vote of thanks, thank you Joyce, and Carol Darling won the competition with her single flower. Well-done Carol! We had a visitor to our meeting, June Cooper, hope to see you again June – do join us. Our next meeting is on June 11th at 6.00 pm at Moat Edge, Cedar Close which is June Hampson’s house. Neighbourhood Watch PC Tim Green intends to be in the library on Thursday 11 June 1100 to 1130 hours to meet members of the public who wish to discuss concerns with him. Over the last 2 months in central Suffolk, thieves have stolen sat navs, bags and stereos from 224 vehicles, 53 of which were unlocked at the time of theft. The public is advised to use lockable wheel nuts with alloy wheels, remove sat navs when not in use and keep shopping and valuables out of sight in parked vehicles. Park in garages, car parks with CCTV or in well lit streets. There have been several thefts of scrap metal in Hoxne recently. In each case the scrap metal was not in a secure compound or building. There have been several local cases in the last few months of people witnessing what they thought was suspicious activity, but not reporting anything until weeks after the event. As things have turned out, it would have been better if the incidents had been reported immediately.

The SLHG Annual General Meeting took place on 6th May 2009 and the existing officers and committee members were re elected en bloc. One of the suggestions for the summer months was the recording and photographing of the tombstones in the church, churchyard and cemetery so that we have a good record before the weather gradually erodes the wording. So if you see a strange bunch of people crawling around the gravestones - its only us! The June meeting is a private group visit to the Mid Suffolk Light Railway Museum which will take place on Wednesday 10th June. The cost is £2.50 per head for non members. We shall be leaving the Community Centre car park at 1.00pm and expect to be back there between 5.00pm and 6.00pm.

Following the huge success of the 80’s Disco held last October; we shall be holding a ‘Skool Disco’ on Saturday 12th September at the Community Centre – more details to follow. Also, our Quiz Night on Friday 25th September and Christmas Bingo on Friday 27th November. Stradbroke Bumps, Babies and Toddler Group meets every Wednesday 10:00 – 12:00 during term time at the Community Centre. Later this year it Fundraising for Stradbroke & District Pre School will take place will be taken over by the Debenham Children’s Centre at The Community Centre and later, Eye. It will continue to run at the same time but with all new toys and craft activities. We would like to thank everyone for helping with setting-up, refreshments and craft, but a special thank you must go to Zoe Shears who has run the group for a number of years with minimal moaning! Unique Folk Band to play at Sibton A unique kind of folk band will be playing at Sibton Church on Saturday 20 June, treating music lovers to a melodic and very different type of music to many local concerts. The Hurd, headed up by Steve Lock, play medieval and new tunes, but also some traditional ones, on a hurdy gurdy, guitar, bassoon, soprano sax. and a recorder. They will start their musical performance at 7pm, and tickets at £10 each include ‘nibbles’ and a free glass of wine. Horham Bygones Country Rally Saturday, June 13, 2009, 10am-5pm. Horham Bygones Country Rally looks as if it is going to be bigger and better than ever this year. Originally started in 2002 as a one-off event to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee the rally has gone from strength to strength and become an annual feature in the small Suffolk village of Horham between Eye and Stradbroke. The event on Saturday June 13th 2009 from 10am until 5pm - was hoping to attract more than 100 historic tractors for the first time this year but early entries mean organisers are setting their sights on up to 150 machines. The tractors will join historic military vehicles, cars and motorcycles as well as working horses and mules. As well as being a big draw for anyone who wants to see old farm machines and horses in action it is also big fun day for all the family as there will also be fairground rides for smaller children and a car boot sale among other attractions. Last year approximately 1,500 people attended. Not only does the event generate much needed funds for the Horham Community Council it also offers charities, including the Royal British Legion, East Anglian Children’s Hospice, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Millennium Farm Trust and Parakeet Rescue, the opportunity to attend, free of charge, in order to promote their organisations and raise funds. Horham Bygones Country Rally is on Horham & Athelington Recreation Field on the B1117 between Eye and Stradbroke. Admission: adults £4, concessions £2, family ticket £10, accompanied under 5s free. 'The HideOut' 'The HideOut' (formerly known as Stradbroke Youth Centre) from Stradbroke are getting on their bikes on Sunday 12th July 2009 to help prevent cruelty to children. By burning rubber as part of the NSPCC’s ‘Big Bike Ride’ , 'The Hideout' is helping to fund crucial services such as ChildLine and the Child Protection Helpline. Last year, the Child Protection Helpline received over 120,000 calls from children and adults. But the NSPCC is not able to answer every call because a cash injection is desperately needed. ChildLine volunteer counsellors are only able to answer just over half of all calls from vulnerable young people. 'The Hideout' said: “We are doing the big bike ride because as young people we feel it really valuable, supporting vulnerable children within our country and we want to help raise funds to support the NSPCC’s vital services for children. The more people who take part in Stradbroke, the more children we can help.” On ‘Big Bike Ride’ weekend - 27-29 June - Our club 'The Hideout' will join hundreds of groups of bike riding friends, families and colleagues who’ll be using pedal power to raise thousands of pounds to put a full stop to child cruelty. Georgina Gunn, ‘Big Bike Ride’ project manager, said: “The ‘Big Bike Ride’ attracts cyclists of all ages and abilities - from lycra-clad enthusiasts to small children on trikes. Swine Flu In light of the developing situation around swine flu cases in Mexico, the US and some other countries, NHS Suffolk would like to reassure members of the public that the risk of catching this influenza is very low. NHS Suffolk has begun rolling out the Department of Health’s guidance and Health Protection Agency's advice to ensure that frontline staff are prepared should cases be confirmed in the UK. The government has a stockpile of antiviral drugs (such as Tamiflu and Relenza) which should be sufficient to treat up to 50 per cent of the population if they become ill – a reasonable worst case scenario. We have been preparing our plans for a number of years and are among the most prepared countries in the world. The health secretary has said that the drugs have been shown to be effective if given in good time. In Suffolk we are putting the necessary plans in place to ensure their distribution if this situation becomes necessary. It continues to be the case that anyone who has visited one of the countries or areas where human cases of influenza have been identified should monitor their health closely for seven days after the visit to the affected area. If during this period they develop a feverish illness accompanied by one or more of cough, sore throat, headache and muscle aches, they should stay at home and contact their GP by phone or seek advice from NHS Direct (0845 4647). Dr Brian Keeble, consultant in public health medicine at NHS Suffolk said: “We are working closely with our colleagues in the Health Protection Agency, and our partners in the NHS East of England to monitor the situation. There are no known cases of swine flu in Suffolk.”General infection control practices and good hand hygiene can help to stop the spread of all viruses, including the human strain of swine influenza. This includes covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible, disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully, maintaining good basic hygiene for example washing hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face or to other people. Cleaning hard surfaces (e.g. door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product and finally, making sure your children follow this advice. Mid Suffolk Council

Stradbroke Football Club Stradbroke 1st team ensured 2nd Division SIL football next season by beating near neighbours Hoxne 3 – 1. The reserves were relegated to Division 6. The Presentation Evening was held at the Suffolk Room on May 2nd with trophies being presented to: 1st Player of the Year – Bobby Varela, 2nd Player of the Year – Neville Oliver, Young Player of the Year – Greg Smith, Most Improved Player - Joel Goodchild, Club Person – Jim Barker, Horse of the Year – Craig Smith, The Edwin Warne Trophy – Craig Smith. Thanks were extended to all who keep the club running so smoothly all season and our sponsors, Transam, The Queens Head and Dave Penycate. The May Cash Bingo raised £60 with the next one on 12th June at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre. The Football Club’s AGM. is on the 1st June in the Sports Pavilion at 8.00 pm and all are welcome. ...and now a word from the SAS ! Last month I told you about our plans for the Inter Village Games. These are now well advanced for the week of June 20th to 28th. We are still looking for a couple of good crib players and someone who can throw “arrows from the oche” (darts). There are also still opportunities in the Rounders team and the 5 a Side (under 16) Football Squad, so get in touch if you are interested; you will be very welcome. However, that’s not what I want to tell you about today – the breaking news is that the SAS are organising ‘The Stradbroke Games’. These will be our very own games for Stradbroke families and friends; a games where everyone can get involved, for both the old and young, the boys and girls, the fit and ... yes, the unfit too! We expect some of our events may even catch the eager eye of Seb Coe, the Chairman of the Olympic Committee, as I don’t get it… potential contenders for 2012 games. So why not come and try your hand, foot he’s no faster but he always or any other part of your anatomy at events such as Olympic Welly Throwing wins... or a Willy Wonka Wheelbarrow race! Alternatively there’s the Penalty Shoot-out for budding Rooneys and, especially for wheelie fans, there’s the slow bike race. If, on the other hand, you fancy an omelette for lunch, try the egg throwing competition! And much, much more. The afternoon of fun and frivolity for all the family, with a bit of competition thrown in, will take place on Sunday June 7th. It will be a great afternoon event for all. The SAS have chosen a really local and intimate venue for the games – The Green at Westhall. This is a central location in the community and within easy walking distance of everyone in the village. And there’s more; because there’s no Village Fête this year, the SAS are also inviting all the local societies and clubs to have a promotional stall at the games - just like the Fête, but free to all. So, if you are a club or society and want to do some fundraising or promotional activity at the event, just let me know and we’ll provide the tables and space for you to set up your stall. Stradbroke & District Bowls Club. A big thank you to the Cricket Club for organising the Car Boot Sale held on the playing field on the 4th May, which was the Bank Holiday Monday. It was a dry but cold day and we were delighted to raise approximately £82 for the maintenance of the green, which was most welcome. We also met some very friendly and interesting people and hope that the Car boot sale will be organised again. Stradbroke Tennis Club The season is now under way and Stradbroke Tennis Club has, this year, entered 2 teams in the Lowestoft Leagues and 2 teams in the South Norfolk Leagues. Match nights are Monday through to Thursdays and Club Nights are on the Friday. The Club are always pleased to see new members of any standard, so if you are interested , why not come along on a Friday evening (7.00pm onwards) where you will be most welcome. On the pub front we are hopeful that the sale of the White Hart pub will have gone through by the time you read this and will be re-opening later this summer. Stradbroke Cricket Club For those of us whose medical brief is to relax and not get too excited, following Stradbroke in the first month of the season has tested that mantra to the limit. Game after game has seen close finishes. The 1st XI started where they left off last year, bowling out Stowupland for 126 (James Ling 5 for 19). Josh Franklin-Mann(37) Dan Tompkins(31) & Michael Hugman(28) finished the job. The less said about the mauling by Thurston, the better, but they came back strongly. After bowling out Nowton for 187(Ling 4 for 36), Tompkins(34), Ling(21), Ben Flatt(21) kept Stradbroke up with the rate, leaving James Grigg(40) to see them home by 1 wicket. The A Team soon adjusted to life in the top league. 136 (Simon Higgins 29, Joe Pearson 28) was too rich for Caribbeans who made just 84(Alex Sharratt 3 for 16). Champions Sudbourne Hall were next. After scoring 178 (Steve Warner 4 for 26), David Allum(56), Higgins(58), & Stuart Taylor(34) saw Stradbroke home. A third straight win was denied by BT, in the very last over. Chasing 225, Allum(41), Higgins(29), Taylor(21), & Ling (36) came up just 3 runs short. The B Team, Academy, & Girls have yet to start their league games, but the youth teams have all played a cup game. The Under 15’s were well beaten at Easton, an inexperienced under 11 side narrowly lost to Kesgrave, but the Under 13’s went to Bury St Edmunds and won with some ease, restricting the home side to just 94, then knocking off the runs (Liam Smith 30, Lewis Taylor 25, Kieran Allum 15). Chance to Shine coaching has started in the local Primary Schools, the spin off being more than 20 youngsters attending Friday Night club coaching. Off the field the much-awaited Car Boot Sale was a great success. 44 pitches were taken, and the event was well supported by the good people of the village. The Cricket Club’s vision in hosting what may well become an annual event was rewarded with another £475 going to the drainage fund. There is hardly time to draw breath. Michael Hugman

Gardeners Notes June is a high point in any garden. Even our garden (neglected as it is) is a pleasure to be in. We have been enjoying some lovely weather even if a little dry, so far there is still moisture in the ground especially if you mulched your beds in winter, not only does it keep moisture in, it feeds the plants and stops most of the weeds. As we go into June the demand on water by plants will increase so keep an eye out for lax leaves, especially on newly planted things including trees and shrubs planted in the winter. Water generously, (not too often), this encourages good deep roots, morning or evening is best, if you do water when the sun is out avoid splashing the leaves as it can scorch the leaves particularly plants that are more used to shady conditions like Japanese Maples. If it stays dry don’t be tempted to cut your grass too short as it is more likely to go brown. Plants in pots need to be watered regularly and it makes a huge difference to have trays under the pot. Also remember to feed them as the compost in the pots doesn’t hold nutrients long. When this comes out Chelsea Flower Show will have finished, and like Wimbledon tennis, it will inspire people to get gardening for at least a week or two, there is an expression called ‘the Chelsea chop’ which you sometimes hear, this refers to cutting the tops off (4 - 6 inches) some herbaceous perennials particularly later flowering ones to encourage more flowers, stronger, shorter stems and slightly later flowering. I have found this works really well with campanula, perennial helianthus, echinacea and lencamthemum to name a few, it takes a bit of nerve. It’s time to plant out tender plants and even house plants will benefit from an airing outside. When planting out runner beans I tend to sow a seed next to the plant in case it gets eaten by slugs. Keep sowing salads and make sure you give rhubarb plenty of water as it has been so dry. It has been a good year for rhubarb because it was so wet last year followed by a cold winter. If you have a greenhouse keep it well ventilated and wet down the floor, this keeps the humidity up and helps stop red spiders attacking things. When it’s dry hoe regularly to stop weeds. Developing plants to look out for this month, Delphiniums are well worth the trouble, ‘Guinevere Group’ is a beautiful rose lavender colour, Alliums add a different dimension to a border, Agapanthus campanulatus is fantastic in a pot and requires very little watering, Nepata ‘Walker’s Low’ is a long flowering front of the border plant and stipa tenuissima is a very tactile low growing grass that should be planted where it catches the evening sun for maximum impact. Finally, it’s a great time of year to get out for a walk or drive and see the countryside, I spotted a herd of 12 red deer at Sibton recently and my children were boating at Thorpeness with their grandparents and saw an otter. “agapanthus campanulatus” I am told that we also have wild boar in this area, which would be quite a sight.
