The bells at All Saints have been mostly silent over the last few years, as we have not had enough local ringers to keep them ringing. Some of you will have missed the sound of the bells and some of you will not. Over the next few weeks there will be several occasions when the bells are going to be rung for various reasons. The Suffolk Guild of Ringers has several events on and due to the fact The caption reads that Stradbroke is one of the “Stradbroke Church, Suffolk. The Two New Trebles of 10 few towers in the area with 10 6CWTS 1QR 6LBS & 6CWTS 2QRS 2LBS bells, we have had requests from Gillet & Johnston a number of visiting bands to Croydon 1952 come and ring. A couple of the occasions will involve continuous ringing - known as a Peal of the bells - over approximately 3 hours (as long as the ringers don't make any big mistakes). For those of you who don't like the bells, this won't usually occur very often, it's just that we have received two requests close together. So please could we ask for your understanding and patience. The Peals are booked for February 21st and March 14th. Whilst it is lovely that we have 10 bells in the village, we are very mindful that they are located in the centre of the village, are quite loud and are fairly difficult to ring well. So we have to find ways of getting new ringers to a certain standard before letting them loose on these bells and making too much of a din. Trevor is currently involved in the teaching of a number of new ringers in the local vicinity and we are planning to bring some of these people to Stradbroke during March to gain experience on the bells. Once they have confidence on these bells we are hoping they will join us on occasions, which will enable us to ring for certain celebrations once again. With so many churches in Suffolk, there aren't enough ringers to go around. This results in many of us travelling quite a distance, to a number of churches, in order to make up the numbers. The wedding season can be very hectic! We will be starting another round of training later this year, with the intention of once again having enough trained people to be able to ring regularly for church services. The training will take place initially at churches in other villages, where the bells are less of an intrusion on the near neighbours. If you think you might be interested in learning, watch out for details which will appear nearer the time. For those of you who do like the bells, we hope you enjoy the ringing. Observed on the first Friday in March, World Day of Prayer has grown into a global movement of Christian women from many traditions.
Jesus is our comforter, He has promised that if we turn to Him, He will be the one who wraps us up in his love, through all the storms of life, and all the many difficulties that we go through. He is waiting to help us with our grief and troubles. No-one is exempt from the pain that goes with life. There are always difficult issues to deal with. Jesus says “Come to me when you are weary and heavy in heart, let me give you rest and peace that passes all understanding” 2 Thessalonians 2;16-17 says “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope by grace, comfort and strengthen your hearts in every good work and word”. May each of us know the peace and comfort that Jesus offers. Jackie

NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: 9th March 2009 7.30pm At the Community Centre
Stradbroke Parish Council The Parish Pump! One member of the public attended and during the Public Forum session prior to the meeting brought to the Council’s attention the poor turn out at the recent Safer Suffolk presentation. The Chairman explained that as information had arrived too late for publication in the magazine and for mention at the January meeting maximum publicity had been impossible. A poster for the notice board had only arrived a matter of days prior to the meeting. A productive meeting had been held to discuss a wildflower area at the churchyard. This will be marked out and a system of paths incorporated rather than having one large area that would appear to be an unkempt patch. It was noted that an area of the churchyard was being cleared of debris. Tenders have been sent out for drainage work on the Playing Field. Once a contractor has been selected and the costs known the fun of grant applications can begin! The Parish Council congratulates to the Cricket Club members for their push to raise £5,000 towards this project. Please support their efforts. Planning The following decisions granting Planning Approval have been received from Mid Suffolk District Council: 3407/08 conversion of redundant granary building into single dwelling Red House Farm, Fressingfield Road Planning Approval was refused for the following: 3029/08 erection of 4 poultry sheds, hard-standing and drainage scheme Ebden’s Farm, Pixey Green The Parish Council considered and recommended approval for the following: 4014/08 erection of 3 dwellings and garages Land at Street Farm, Laxfield Road 0209/09 erection of single storey extensions to dwelling with re-roofing over flat roof adjacent 2 Rookery Cottages, Battlesea Green The following application is to go to appeal: 1317/08 erection of 4 dwelling houses, associated parking and new vehicular access Land to rear of 1 & 2 Westhall Icy Pavements: Please note that the primary responsibility for gritting the roads and pavements is with Suffolk County Council. However, they will only grit pavements in villages in extreme conditions and then only on some routes such as those used by the schools. We would be most grateful if our street cleaner, Trevor Carrison, is not approached to undertake this task. It is not his job and we no longer have grit available in the village.
Please note that the primary responsibility for gritting the roads and pavements is with Suffolk County Council.
VACANCY Have you ever wondered what the Parish Council gets up to on the second Monday of every month? Member Rosemary Warne MBE DL was the speaker at the February Branch Meeting held at The Laxfield King’s Head. 14 members attended to hear her talk about her duties as a Deputy Lieutenant in London. The talk was most interesting and I led the vote of thanks on behalf of those present. In The tribute at the start of the meeting I mentioned the death of member John Cooke who lived in Wangford, and Reg Luff from Needham Market, a Suffolk County Vice President. A Branch Treasurer is still needed - (see the advertisement elsewhere in this edition) - as at present Jeremy Higgins our Secretary is carrying out this duty. He presented the financial report, and a report on the recent Suffolk County RBL Conference, which was held at Needham Market last month and attended by five Branch Officers. By now all members will have received a letter from me regarding the mid day Annual Branch Dinner to be held in Stradbroke Community Centre on March 20th. Guest Speakers will be The Rev’d Ben Sasada (chaplain to The Diss Branch RBL), Denis Bloomfield the new County Chairman, and Mrs Pat Scott the Chairman of the Counties Women’s Section. Finally the speaker at the next Branch Meeting on Thursday March 5th in the Kings Head Laxfield, will be Nick Thompson BEM who lives in the village. The meeting will start at 11.30am, and members please attend if you are able. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.
Stradbroke Wine Society We were delighted to once again invite Eve and Richard Berrill who on the 24th January spoke to us about Italian Wines. Helpfully Eve gave us all a map of Italy showing the wine regions and we sampled four white and four red wines from the alpine, Tuscany and the far south areas. Our next meeting is on the 28th March when five members will be asking us to taste wines of their choice. Claudene Merritt

We welcomed Jill Bird as a visitor and hope she will become a member of our branch soon. We will be holding an Easter Fair in the Community Centre on Saturday April 4th from 10 .00 am until 2 .00 pm. The next regular meeting will be on Wednesday 4th March 2009 at 7.00pm in the Community Centre. We welcome back one of our favourite speakers, Stuart Bowell who will be telling us “all about bricks” It may seem an unusual subject but it has a long history and a lot of local and East Anglian history wrapped up in it. (Non members welcome £1.00)
We also have received some information about the “middi” from Ellen Nunn, who went on the middi to get to school in Stowmarket between 1945 and 1949. The journey wasn’t straightforward for the 35 –40 children who went daily to Stowmarket from the stations along the line starting at Laxfield (5 children ) then Wilby (5), Stradbroke (8) , Horham (2) and so on down the route to Haughley Junction where they changed onto the Bury or Norwich train that went via Stowmarket. Ellen remembers them getting covered in smoke and coal dust as they crossed the bridge over the main line to get the connecting train and the mile walk to school when they finally arrived in StowThe goods train about to depart market. Ellen’s journey had started with a two mile bike ride to Stradbroke station—at high speed if she saw the train leaving Wilby Station on its way to Stradbroke. The train left at 7 a.m. and was seen off by the station guards, Mr Betts and Mr Willis Keeble. The engine was manned by a fireman and a driver and where the line crossed the road the fireman would close the gates to road traffic and allow the train to cross. Once over, the guard would reopen the gates and let the traffic continue on its way. The middi was used by goods trains as well bringing parcels to shops, taking farm produce such as sugar beet to Ipswich and milk to London. It also carried livestock and each station had its own livestock pen. During the war, materials were brought by the wagon load to Horham for building the airfield and once the airfield was established, ammunition and bombs travelled the “middi” as well. Thank you Ellen, for these memories. Mike Readman

Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

Can you help? Stradbroke Area Contact Club requires a Co-ordinator The Contact Club meets each Tuesday in the Community Centre and is for those in the village and surrounding villages who have experienced physical / psychological / social problems and are isolated and would benefit from peer / group support in a social / relaxational setting The primary objective of the club is to provide, at meetings and other events, a warm and friendly atmosphere for members where they can be mutually supportive and where they can find stimulation in, for example, group social activities. We are currently looking for a Co-ordinator to run this group to ensure that this objective is achieved as far as is possible within the limited funds. This does include when possible to arrange a light lunch each week and arrange various educational / social visits. A small monthly honorarium is paid plus any expenses. For more details contact Iris Badcock on 01379 384244 or Eric Havers on 01379 388173
Royal British Legion requires a Treasurer Please can anybody assist us? The RBL Stradbroke and District Branch urgently require a new Treasurer. The likely person could be male or female and does not need to be ex-service but should be numerate and interested in helping us with the welfare of ex-servicemen and women and their dependants who live in our area. Training and assistance would be provided. If we fail to find a treasurer this will result in our Branch, which has been in existence for over 80 years, having to close. Further details can be obtained from Michael Burton, our Chairman, on 01379 870509 or from Jeremy Higgins, The Secretary, on 01379 384300.

Stradbroke Cinema Presents... On Thursday, 19th March , Stradbroke Community Centre, is showing Easy Virtue 7 for 7.30 pm.Bar will be open - and Ice creams in the interval! Entrance £5.50. A hugely enjoyable version of Noel Coward’s twenties culture clash between English aristocrats and a brash Bohemian American. The story, which is set in the roaring twenties, is about a young English man John Whittaker (Ben Barnes) who falls in love with American girl Larita (Jessica Biel) and the pair marry on a whim in France. But when they return to England, Whittaker's mother Veronica (Kristin Scott Thomas) is less than thrilled with her son's choice of partner and a battle of wits between the two strong-willed women ensues. Directed by Stephan Elliott the film retains its period setting with a modern twist, including a cutting edge cast (including Colin Firth and Kris Marshall) and music by the likes of Prince. The film for April which will be shown on the 23rd is the James Bond’s A Quantum of Solace staring Daniel Craig but more about this film in next months magazine. Margaret Streeter

Friends of All Saints, Stradbroke Plant Sale Thanks to your very generous donations of superb plants and seedlings last year, our Plant Sale was a great success. Just a gentle reminder of the date of this year's sale - Saturday 2 May. So when you start pottering in the garden this month, please bear a thought for our cause. We would love to have your support again this time and don’t forget our Garden Lunch on Saturday 11th July in a lovely garden in Stradbroke. There will be more details about this nearer to the time. Stradbroke Calendar 2010 We have received some lovely photos already and will welcome more from any of you keen photographers, preferably landscape, rather than portrait size. We want OUR calendar to be about OUR village, its beautiful scenery, wildlife, gardens in bloom, people’s activities, etc through the seasons. Please send your contributions to Carol & Don Darling at caroldon01@gmail.com for consideration. Margaret Buckland

“Middy” Memories My five-year “affair” with the “Middy” began in 1943 when I passed the scholarship at Stradbroke Primary School. The Suffolk Education Committee offered me a place at Eye Grammar School but my parents turned it down on the grounds that I would have to cycle over the main runway at Horham Aerodrome. It was wartime and the B17’s (Flying Fortresses) were busy taking off and landing. I was then offered a place at Framlingham Mills Grammar School, but again my parents said ”no” because my mum had attended there as a boarder and wasn’t happy. Eventually I was given permission to go to Stowmarket Grammar School, which had an extremely good name and record. The Middy started it’s weekday run (it didn’t run on Sundays) from Laxfield and then called at Wilby, Stradbroke, Horham, Worlingworth, Kenton, Aspall, Brockford and Mendlesham stations picking up school children at each stop before arriving at Haughley Junction. I lived at Horham Post Office and had to catch the train at 7.50 am. I was usually in good time, however on the odd occasion when I was a bit late, the driver who could see me running up the hill would kindly wait for me. As the Crow flies it is only 13 miles from Horham to Haughley but the journey took an hour. Apart from the station level crossings, the gates at the un-manned crossings had to be opened by the fireman and closed by the guard. Another time-consuming necessity was the stop between Kenton and Aspall when the engine had to take on water from a very large tank next to the track. Upon arrival at Haughley (the end of the line) we had to catch a mainline train to complete our journey to Stowmarket. The journey home was not quite so straightforward. The Middy left Haughley for Laxfield before our school day finished, so, every day we had to ask permission to be let out of school early so that we could make a frantic dash to catch our connection to Haughley. Had we missed this train we would have missed the Middy and there wasn’t another. Luckily I never did miss it! Homework was a nightly thing but it was impossible to do any on the train – it was far too bumpy a ride and too noisy to concentrate. The carriages were basic with no corridors or toilets. We tended to stick to the same carriages with the same group of friends and opening a window or fresh air often meant a shower of smut blowing in. Looking back I now realize what happy days they were and what a sad day it was when the “Middy” was no more. Ruth Chambers (nee Johnson)

This is even more remarkable as we have only entered the competition twice, and in 2007 we came last! This is testament to the determination, hard work, friendship and fun that each and every one of our scouts contributes towards our group. This is definitely a year of YES WE CAN! Stradbroke Cricket Club In February’s ‘Monthly’ the Cricket Club outlined it’s plans to raise £5000 in 2009, and one month in, 20% is there already. As always, our annual Horse Race Night was well supported, drawing an audience of 86, and despite the financial grim reaper being in close proximity, a profit of £937 was made. There are too many people to thank individually, but a mention for Peter Smith who kindly donated the £100 he won on the auction race, back to the Club. Encouraged by this, another ground breaking event is planned. It has been brought to our notice that there are no Car Boot Sales in the area, and with people looking for a bargain, the Cricket Club intends to remedy this, by organising one at the Playing Field on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May from 10am to 2pm. Pitches are available for £5 in advance. Contact Carrie Barnes on 388654. There will be other attractions on the day. Look out for details in the April Magazine, but put the date in your diary, now. Before that, the Easter Music Marathon takes place in the Queens Head Inn, with proceeds split between the Cricket Club and the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The playing season is just around the corner, with junior coaching starting at SBEC Sports Hall. Girls every Monday from 6pm to 7pm, boys every Tuesday from 6pm to 7.30pm, up to the Easter holidays, so if any of your offspring want to try cricket, just turn up. There is a charge of £2 per session, for which your child will get qualified coaching, and fun at the same time. Stradbroke has been chosen to host a Girls County Match in the Summer, as well as a Boys District Representative Match, due reward for the progress our junior section is making. Next month, more details about Car Boot Sale. And on a personal note… Rose & Michael Hugman of Hazeldene would like to thank all the villagers who bought apples from their stall over the winter. A record £140 was raised for MacMillan Cancer Care in Suffolk, which means in 5 years, the Charity is better off by over £500. Thanks for your continued support. Mike Hugman

Gardeners Notes It seems like ages since I last put dibber to paper, a combination of always leaving things to the last minute and not truly believing that anyone would choose to garden in the weather we've had recently. Let's hope the worst of the winter is behind us and it's all go from this point forward. The snowdrops are looking great but the cold weather has meant that other bulbs have been a bit slower to come out. If you want more snowdrops it is best to buy them in the green (with their leaves on) after they have flowered, you can also increase the number of plants by dividing up clumps in to 3 - 5 bulb groups, as they bulk up quickly. Aconites are also nice to see, and outside Garden Cottage on New Street under the magnificent copper beach, is a large naturalized group. We are coming to the end of winter plants and it is good to remember what looks good now, as many good winter plants also have spring, summer and autumn attributes. Betula utlils jaquemontii (white bark, fresh green leaves and a tidy habit), Vinca minor argentea variegata (variegated cream and green leaves, light blue flowers), some dogwoods grown for winter stem colour also have good foliage and delicate flowers, Cornus sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire' and the variegated Cornus alba variegatum, the fern polystichum setiferum (evergreen with lovely fresh spring growth) makes a good plant for a shady corner. Over the winter I've been planting bareroot trees and hedging and there is still a few more weeks to go for these jobs (until the end of March). It is a good time to prune roses, a good rule is if the bush has thick stems and looks vigorous it should be pruned a bit harder, if it has delicate stems just give it a gentle trim over the top even with a pair of shears. Climbing roses need to be tied in creating as much horizontal growth as possible. Rambling roses tend to do best if given space to do their own thing and tidied when they get out of hand. This is a very basic view, if you want a more detailed description you can drop me a line or check out a good practical garden book. It's time to get started with the veg garden, try to complete digging by March but keep off the soil if wet. Things to sow outside are beetroot, carrots, peas, onion and shallot setts, if you warm the soil first with a piece of see-through plastic it really helps the germination, salads such as radish, rocket and lettuce can all be started now but will benefit from a cloche. Start chitting potatoes (if you believe it makes a difference), don't be tempted to cut them or use any old potatoes, only go for seed potatoes, look for good disease resistance, this is a good rule for all vegetables as it takes away the need to use chemicals. Other jobs to do, cut back ornamental grasses before they start growing, give deciduous hedges a trim now if they need one as birds will start nesting later on. Take the opportunity to tidy up the garden. Hellebores which are looking very nice at the moment can suffer from leaf problems so remove any that don't look healthy, this also helps to show off the shy flowers. A few points to end on, I read in the magazine that someone had their flowers taken from a grave in the cemetery. This may very well have happened, but, having spoken to someone who also leaves flowers at the cemetery and, when I recently checked, I noticed there are plenty of rabbits and much evidence of them nibbling flowers, real and plastic. This time of year is always bad for rabbit and deer damage, although this isn't good news it may be some consolation. Other than creating a small chicken wire dome over the flowers there isn't much to be done. You may have read that there is to be a wildlife area behind the church, this year is to be a bit of a trial year, but I would like to introduce a few wild species starting with some snowdrops, if anyone has any to spare to be planted in March please let me know. Contact me, Luke Heydon, with gardening questions or anything concerning the article at The Wheelwrights, Church Street, Stradbroke.
