The Stradbroke Monthly needs an Editor! The Editor role is central to the production of the magazine and without an Editor, Stradbroke could be without a magazine. There is a small team that produces the magazine each month and the Editor is an integral part of that team. It isn't an onerous job and takes around 10 hours a month, mainly towards the end of the month when the magazine is produced.
• • • • • • • •
The role of the Editor Receive emails during the month which are stored on their computer in a folder. Hand written articles are typed up as received and stored similarly. Whilst doing that the Editor checks the article isn't slanderous, isn’t likely to cause offence and, most of all, is relevant to the next two months editions of the magazine. A week before the "Closing Date for Articles" the Editor emails all the regular contributors a reminder of the approaching "Closing Date" The "Closing Date" is always a Friday and on the Saturday morning the Editor collects any last minute articles from the Post Office, types them up and adds them to the other articles on the Computer. These are then emailed to the Layout Designer who sets them into the magazine format. We have regular articles which are those we publish every month (Churches, Parish Council etc) and occasional articles (fetes, meetings, etc). Once the articles have been set into the magazine format and if there are no problems with them, the Team meets on the Tuesday evening to discuss the magazine and proof read it. Any final corrections or adjustments are made and a Final Copy is passed back to the Editor who takes it to the Court House on Wednesday and gets the printing underway. Printing takes about 9 hours and is shared among the team. After that the magazines are bagged up and go off to the distribution team.
The skills needed are: • Basic computer eg word, email • Organisational ability • Attention to detail • Able to work with a variety of contributors styles and ways • Able to work to a deadline • Commitment • Must be someone who wants to be part of a team –you are not on your own in this role. • A Sense Of Humour – having fun whilst we do the magazine is an absolute requirement ! Rate of pay: • £0.00 p.a. Bonus • 100% of pay Extras • Satisfaction of doing a making a really worthwhile contribution to your community • Signed photo of Parish Councillor of your choice...

A small boy entered the ladies department and rather shyly presented his problem to the sales assistant. “I want to buy a dress for my mum” he said, “but I don’t know her size.” The helpful assistant asked. “It would help to know if your mum is short or tall, fat or skinny.” “She’s just perfect,” beamed the lad, so the sales girl wrapped up a nice little dress size twelve. Two days later Mum came to the store and changed it for a size eighteen. We welcome you to join us as we thank God for our mothers. Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Church website: www.allsaints-stradbroke.com Dear Friends, Margaret and I are looking forward to putting together the rota of Flower Arrangers for the Church, starting on Easter Sunday. What a joy it will be to see all the colour and brightness on that morning! We also have volunteers making posies to be given out on Mothering Sunday as tokens of love at the Family Service at 10.00 am that day, with Simnel Cake to be eaten afterwards. In contrast, on most days in March, without floral encouragement, we will be thinking, praying and singing as we go through the season of Lent and Passiontide to prepare to celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Jennifer Chetwynd is having a Study Group at her house on weekday afternoons; ring her on 384069 for more details. I will also be giving an address at the services on Thursdays that are listed above. On Sunday, 21st March, you are invited to Fressingfield Church to hear Bishop Clive lead the Confirmation Service there at 3.30 pm. It is always good to hear him preach. Our need to put the heating on and to keep the building in good repair reminds us that it is a costly exercise to maintain the place where we meet for worship, and to maintain my fulltime ministry. In contrast the Love of God shown by His Son Jesus is free. Let us use these opportunities to learn how to be a Christian in the twenty-first century when so many critical issues need our attention, and our thoughts and prayers about them, refreshed by our study of the Bible and our shared beliefs. In December, in the red Christmas newsletter, I asked for more of you to come forward and offer to take part in ringing the church bells, singing in the choir, dusting and polishing inside All Saints, and arranging flowers there. We have some names, but we do need more. Are these activities that interest you? Instruction and guidance are available. The Church will be looking its best on Easter Sunday; do come inside then and see how you could contribute to that effect. The door is open every day for you. With all good wishes, David Streeter.

The Parish Council have been advised not to clear the paths in icy weather.
Other Business - A conifer in the churchyard has begun to fall and will be removed as soon as possible. - Following the concerns raised with Councillors about the pavements in icy weather the advice received from a leading broker to the town and parish sector was that areas should not be cleared as it is easier for pedestrians to make a judgement whether or not to use the pavement if attempts to remove snow, ice, leaves etc have not been made. - The conifers beside the tennis courts are to be trimmed and reduced in height as soon as the weather allows. - Sure Start funding has been obtained to provide improvements at the Community Centre News Items NSPCC Helpline - is the place to turn to if you are worried about a child and it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year on 0808 800 5000 or email help@nspcc.org.uk. Life in the Legion On a cold and damp February morning the Branch resumed its monthly meetings after its winter break with a talk by Robin Limmer from Denton. His subject was 37 years working for The Eastern Daily Press, which was most interesting. On behalf of the members present I led the usual Vote of Thanks. At the start of the meeting in The Tribute I mentioned the recent deaths of David Froggatt from Stradbroke, and Barbara Goodwin from Laxfield. Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins reported on the recent County Conference, and also read out the Treasurer's report as Roy Neil had given his apologies. All members have now received a letter regarding our annual branch dinner which is to be held on Friday March 12th at Stradbroke Community Centre. Members please note that the closing date for buying tickets is Friday the 5th March. Branch Membership is now 88, and we welcome Nick Thompson B.E.M. from Stradbroke who has recently joined. The Branch is looking for a Bugler to play at The War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday November 14th. The Branch now owns a Bugle and anyone who is interested please contact either Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins (01379 384300) or myself (01379 870 509). The next Branch Meeting will be held on Thursday March 4th at The King's Head Laxfield commencing at 11.30am when the Guest Speaker will be Suffolk County Councillor Guy McGregor from nearby Hoxne. Michael Burton - Branch Chairman.
Stradbroke Primary School The good news, Helping Haiti Stradbroke Primary School has raised over £600 following a visit from High Suffolk Rotary Club who explained the problems faced by the people of Haiti. The money was raised through a non-uniform day and a cake stall which brought in over £200. A sponsored walk around the village by Tina Abbott and Mel Allum, took the final figure to more than £600 The efforts and contributions from so many children and adults, are a great example of the what can be achieved by the school and local community working together. Thank you to everyone who contributed and to the children and to Tina and Mel. The bad news- Break in at the school It is disappointing to report that the two schools in Stradbroke were broken into recently and it is very sad that we should have been affected by crime in this way. Although nothing of great value was taken there was some damage to the Primary School doors and fixtures. This is not something we would wish for the children to have to see. Staff and Governors have really pulled together to address the situation and hopefully this will never happen again. The police are investigating. Melanie Barrow

Stradbroke Business & Enterprise College Stradbroke Business and Enterprise College will move in to a new era on 19th April when its new Head Teacher, Mr Andrew Bloom, takes over the leadership of the school. He is currently Deputy Head at Debenham High School and has worked in Suffolk for many years. He is very excited at the prospect of leading SBEC and absolutely thrilled at his appointment as Head Teacher. When Mr Bloom was discussing his appointment with governors, he said “I want all our pupils to enjoy their education and to achieve their full potential in all areas of school life. Working in partnership with pupils, staff, parents, governors and the wider community I hope that this goal can be achieved for each individual”. Mr Perry Linsley Headteacher

Stradbroke Women’s Institute We celebrated our 85th Anniversary in February, in spite of the snow and bad weather. David Padwick came to entertain us with his "Songs from the Shows" from the Roaring Twenties thru' to the Seventies. We tapped our feet to "Chicago, "Making Whoopee", and joined in where we could! Our President, Sue Gray and Secretary, Jennifer Chetwynd cut the magnificent cake which we all enjoyed along with a glass of wine. Betty Chittock won the competition with her Theatre Programme, well done Betty. Joyce Lee gave the vote of thanks and we all enjoyed a good evening. I wonder what the next 85 years will bring? Our next meeting is on Thursday March 11th, 7.30 in the Community Centre, do come along and join us. Iris Badcock, Press Secretary
HAITI DISASTER RELIEF - Rotary Club of High Suffolk. Seven Primary Schools across north Suffolk (Laxfield, Stradbroke, Fressingfield, Occold, Eye, Gislingham and Debenham) have, individually, raised over £2500in support of the Shelter box Charity. Members of the Rotary Club of High Suffolk gave presentations to each of these schools explaining what a shelter box provided for the recipients in the disaster area. In many instances an actual shelter box and its contents were displayed. This sum will be sufficient to fund over 5 boxes each costing £490. From street collections, collection boxes left in a number of premises in the villages and from individual donations the Club will be able to fund a further 5 boxes bringing the total to 10. With even more donations coming in daily it is very possible that this number will increase to at least 13. Members of the Club were pleased to be able to talk to pupils and stall at Stradbroke Primary School about the Shelter Box Charity. The outcome was a very generous fund raising effort which, to date, has amounted to £396. The President and members of the High Suffolk Club wish to express their thanks for the outstanding generosity of pupils, staff, parents and so many other residents of the area. Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Please call our Helpline for more information; 01473 232679 or visit our website; www.suffolk-carers.co.uk

The January meeting heard the great tale of the life of Margaret Catchpole who was convicted as a horse thief, escaped from Ipswich Gaol was recaptured and eventually transported to Australia. It covered her early life, her work with the Cobbold family and subsequent adventures with a convicted smuggler and his gang. Most entertaining and enjoyed by all. Last month’s mystery picture of deep snow in the centre of the village was taken in the 1940s in Wilby Road looking south. The photographer would have been standing near to where the SBEC entrance is today. The March event is the Village Archive Slide Show No 6. We are showing Bright Star, featuring Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish, an exquisite piece of film-making by Jane Campion. The Director has a knack for portraying female characters so intimately that she seems to get beneath their skin. Bright Star, based on the three-year romance between 19th century poet John Keats and Fanny Brawne, which was cut short by Keats' untimely death at age 25, a tragic love story. As much witty humour as there is aching sorrow, this movie is not one to be missed. Margaret Streeter

Oh No! Not Again Hi everyone, you may remember a couple of years ago I had the opportunity to take part in the London Marathon and raise funds for Leukaemia. Well, I’m a sucker for punishment and I’m back to do another run, but this time for a very local cause. I’m taking part in the Bungay (Half) Marathon (the legs are not what they used to be!) and I’m trying to raise money for the young people of Stradbroke. You may have noticed that Mike Readman and I have set up Stradbroke Youth FC which is attracting a lot of interest from children in and around Stradbroke and providing a focus for young people’s energy outside of school hours. But, this is only the beginning, there is still much to be done to make this an enduring success and we would welcome your support. The Stradbroke Charitable Trust and Parish Council are helping with the setting up of the club and we have a small grant from the Suffolk FA which has gone towards Coaching and training equipment. We now need to start planning for entry into the league next season and in order to help with the funding I have decided to brush the dust of my running shoes again and try another sponsored run. This time it’s in Bungay on April 18th and I would like to ask you to sponsor my effort in whatever way you can. Specifically your contributions will go towards a new strip for the teams and portable floodlights. You will find sponsor forms in all the usual places around the village and the team would really appreciate your support. Don Darling (Tel. 01379 388098)

Stradbroke Youth FC We had a good turnout for the daytime training on Wednesday 17th February both for the under12s and the older group. It was nice to have reasonable weather for once ! On Friday 19th February Stradbroke Youth FC had its first game when we visited Sporting 87 in Bury, for an under 13 match. Due to their usual pitch being waterlogged we had to move to a huge Astroturf pitch which was fantastic to play on. With both sides “starting out” as new teams it was played as four twenty minute games and we were very pleased with all the performances of our players who hardly put a foot wrong. Overall we ended up winning 71 against a good team and in a very friendly game. Good football from both teams and not a single foul in the whole match; well done to the players and thanks for the excellent travelling support from our “crowd”. Our team was Ben Evans-Hendrick, Tom Hargrave, Aaran Pleasance, Lewis Cutts, James and Anthony Redwood, Luke Mayhew, Ronnie and Ritchie Courtney, Jack Heydon, Alex Lawrence, Josh Sach and Jack Melton. Mike Readman
Stradbroke White Hart Bowls Club The Presentation Dinner will be held on Saturday 6th March 2010 at the White Hart and we certainly plan to have a good evening! Work on and around the green continues despite the poor weather but in about 8 weeks we will be starting the bowls season so not long to go before we are out there in short sleeves with the sun on our backs and the bad weather just a distant memory. Mike Readman
Stradbroke Football Club Since the last magazine, Stradbroke 1st Team, Beat Somersham 1-0, Lost to Ipswich Exiles 0-1 AND Lost to Bacton 2-3. The Reserves lost to Felixstowe Harpers 1-2 and beat Sproughton 2-1 A pity we cannot overturn the one goal losses into winners. The February Cash Bingo was not too badly supported despite the cold weather, we raised £63 for Funds and the Jumble Sale raised £237. The Bad News now. A quantity (4 pieces) of silver plate was taken from the Sports Pavilion on Friday night or Saturday morning before the Jumble Sale. If anyone knows their whereabouts please let us know. The Clairvoyant Evening which had been arranged has been reluctantly cancelled due to some village opposition. Several people had said they would come, so the club has lost some more much needed revenue. If you have any fund raising ideas we would love to hear them. The next Cash Bingo is on 12th March, lets hope the cold weather is gone by then. It's nice to see the Juniors are now in full training . Also many thanks to the Health Charitable Trust for their donation towards the cost of hiring the High School pitch. This was much appreciated Mary Ellis

Young Stradbroke Athletes in the Aviva Sportshalls Eastern Region Finals Congratulations to two young Stradbroke athletes, Louise Stephens who represented Norfolk and Thomas Hargrave who represented Suffolk in the Eastern Region finals at UEA Norwich, on 31stJanuary 2010. Louise Stephens was in the Girls Under 15 All Rounder events, winning Gold in the 4 lap race and the Standing Long Jump and after all her events she was tied for second place overall which means that she goes forward to the National Finals in Birmingham later this year. A terrific performance and good luck Louise, in the finals. Thomas Hargrave was in the Boys Under 13 events and took Bronze in the 2 lap race and, to everyone’s surprise, including his, a Bronze medal in the High jump event. A surprise because he had never done the high jump before and was asked to stand in at the last minute against some very good high jumpers! Mike Readman

Stradbroke Cricket Club We still find ourselves in the grip of winter, and wondering whether we will ever play cricket at all, but that does not detract from the efforts behind the scenes. Despite only 60 supplicants present, the Annual Race Night made a staggering £687 profit for the club. As ever, thanks to those who supported us, and the sponsors of the races. Even the odd technical hitch failed to spoil the evening. Fund raising is still the buzzword in the ‘off’ season, and we are delighted to confirm that in the Clubs 30th year, we will be holding out 6th & last ever Easter Music Marathon at The Queens Head Inn from Friday 2nd to Monday 5th April. By happy coincidence 2010 is the 10th Anniversary of the East Anglian Air Ambulance. Proceeds of the weekend will be split between the Cricket Club & Air Ambulance. Please call in and support two worthy causes by choosing from the 4000 vinyl singles we have to play, whilst enjoying a drink. If you like your music, the postponed Pop Quiz has been rearranged for Saturday 10th April, 7:30pm @ Community Centre. More details will be in the April Monthly, but put the date in your diary now. New players are always welcome, but the Club has a specific need this year. There is a vacancy for an assistant for their overworked groundsman. Duties include some grass cutting, pitch preparation, & maintenance. Would suit an active retired person, or someone younger looking to start a career path. This is a voluntary position, but the Club will pay to attend locally run, certificated, one day Institute of Groundsman courses in Spring & Summer. Interested? Contact Michael Hugman on 01379384433 or 07796-465347. Michael Hugman

Important date for your diaries. Our Green will be opening on Saturday, 17th April at 3.00 p.m. for members and anyone interested in trying their hand at the game of bowls. More information in the April issue. Lily Lofts.

Gardeners Notes One day I will wake up and look out of the window and spring will have arrived, it seems that winter has gone on for months, hopefully snowdrops should be out by the time you read this. The cold weather may give us a late spring, this can make it even more impressive as the weather warms up, everything bursts into life at once. There may not be much around at the moment but that certainly makes you appreciate the scent of winter flowering plants, sarcococca confusa (winter box) has a nice jasmin scent from its tiny white flowers, if you walk up New Street on the right is a lovely winter flowering honeysuckle which you wouldn't notice if it wasn't for the sweet smell. Other winter flowering plants are many of the Daphnes, Viburnum and Hamarnelis (witch hazel). March is a good month to split harbaceous plants in the border, particularly clumps that have lost their vigour in the centre. You don't need to be too careful, ideally use a couple of forks back to back, to be honest a good hearty chop with the spade does the trick. Most geraniums, echinops and day lillies will benefit from this every 4 years or so, and as long as you don't have a perenial weed problem you can share them out. It is also a good opportunity to feed up the soil. While you are splitting the plants try to remember where you had holes in the border last year, you can move herbaceous plants around to fill the gaps. Keep an eye on rabbit damage at this time of year, they will strip the bark off mature trees if they are really hungry. A small dome of chicken wire over herbaceous plants works well to protect the new shoots and is hidden once the plants grow through. It is a good time to start sorting the plant supports and get them in place, it may seem early but once they start growing there is so much to do you tend to leave it too late. Roses should be given a good prune now if you haven't done so already. The more vigorous shrub roses can be cut back quite hard aiming to cut above an outward facing bud, open up the centre of the plant to create a goblet shape, remove dead wood and give a good feed with a bonemeal or rose food. More delicate roses like David Austin new english roses with smaller branches can just be reduced with a pair of shears taking off the dead heads and evening up the shape of the bush. Rambling roses can be treated in the same way with a pair of shears. Climbing roses need to be trained to get the best out of them, sideways growth encourages more flowers particularly as alot of climbing roses are repeat flowering. Other jobs that are worth doing are cut back epemedim leaves so that you can see the flowers when they emerge in spring. Tidy up the edges of beds now with a halfmoon before the grass starts to grow too much. Rake up the last of the leaves and winter rubbish off the flower beds before things start to grow. While visiting friends that recently moved my son Jack noticed a wren flying into a hole betwixt some bricks in a wall. We all poo hooed him, it was dusk at the time and when he remarked that a couple more birds flew in we started to take more notice. About 15 minutes later we had counted some 16 wrens going in and I was later informed that the next morning 21 were counted leaving. For any questions in gardening or if you have any interesting local wildlife stories please contact me at The Wheelwrights or via the village website. Here's hoping for some better weather, Luke Heydon

Stradbroke Role in Suffolk Transport Survey Suffolk County Council is reviewing the passenger transport services it provides in your local area and is keen to know what your passenger transport needs and general travel habits are so we can adapt services to meet them. Please help us by completing a short two-page survey which can be found at the Library, the Post Office. Alternatively, you may wish to fill in the form on-line at: www.stradbroke.org.uk The results will help us to assess where local needs are and are not being met and which timetabled services we might need to change or maintain. The information will also tell us whether we should look at the possibility of providing more flexible passenger transport services that might not run according to a standard timetable and might operate over a wider time-span. Please return the survey to us by 30 March 2010 using the FREEPOST address provided at the bottom of page 2 of the survey. All information will remain anonymous to preserve confidentiality. Please call Will Marshall on 01473 264814 or Dawn Carton on 01473 264820 if you would like help completing the survey. Stradbroke Parish Council strongly supports Suffolk County Council in developing more effective public transport for our community. Please help by taking the time to complete the survey.
