New Stradbroke Website launched!

The village website at http://www.stradbroke.org.uk has been around for 4 years now – a long time in the world of the Internet!

On Friday 10th April at 12 noon, as part of the Easter Weekend Music Marathon the new village website was launched!

The new site offers: •‘Social Networking’ features, you can easily have your own personal web page on the site and engage with other site members; •You can upload photos and videos directly onto the site - already there are lots of photos of ‘old’ Stradbroke including the very dramatic fire in the fish and chip shop!

If you have ever wondered about who the Holy Spirit is, and what He does, then we welcome you to our series on the Holy Spirit, which John Ling will be teaching about on the 3rd 4th and 5th Sunday of this month of May. There has always been some controversy about this subject, and some teaching has sometimes been a bit “off key” and occasionally a bit “wacky” but we believe that the Holy Spirit is part of the trinity of God, and holds equality with God the Father and with Jesus the Son. Don’t understand? Then come and hear what the bible teaches about the Holy Spirit. We welcome anyone who wants to join us in worship at any of our services, and look forward to YOUR company.

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee The Quiz Evening took place but, unfortunately, the Primary School had one on the same evening. We raised £80.60 and thanks must go to B. Moore for the questions and to B. Goffee for Question Master. The Art Exhibition will be in full swing by the time you read this in the magazine; please do come and admire other people’s talent. News Items Recycling news: there are now bins in place at the recycling point for tetra paks so please make use of them and slim your bin!

Dog Fouling: Yet again people have been allowing their dogs to foul the pavement outside the primary school. Please be aware that dog faeces can transmit a very nasty disease so apart from the unpleasantness of having to clean the debris from shoes this anti social mess can have far-reaching consequences for very small children.

Allowing dogs to foul pavements is an offence so please clean up after your pet.

Vacancy The vacancy for a councillor was filled at the April meeting. Five people put their names forward, which was really outstanding and there was one other enquiry. The Chairman and Councillors would like to thank everyone for their interest in serving the community.

* * * STOP PRESS! ANNUAL PARISH MEETING 13 APRIL 2009 * * * The Annual Parish Meeting was attended by 29 members of the public and reports were presented by various organisations in the village. The Chairman, Ann Kerr, welcomed everyone opened proceedings with her annual report which gave all present an overview of Parish Council activity during 2008/9. She gave an update on the musings of the Boundary Committee which is taking further comment until 14 May 2009 so, if you have not yet done so, there is still time to make your voice heard. Please contact the Clerk if you wish to have details of ways to contact the Boundary Committee. Cllrs McGregor and Gemmill also gave brief reports on activities at Suffolk County Council and Mid Suffolk District Council respectively. Mike Readman gave a very interesting presentation on the history of the Stradbroke Monthly which illustrated just how far the magazine has progressed over its 20 years (and how little some things change). James Hargrave demonstrated the new website (www.stradbroke.org.uk). This looked stunning and very user friendly. All groups in the village can have their own page within the site so it really is a one-stop shop for information about Stradbroke. It is hoped that training will be offered in the very near future so groups will be able to manage their own pages. Crime remains low, organisations are very active, the primary school is busy and the churchyard will soon be looking very bright and open when the two conifers are removed and the wild life area begins to take shape. Thanks go to Luke Heydon for his support and advice on the wildlife project.

Life in the Legion 86 Members and Guests, who came from a wide area attended our 23rd Annual Branch Dinner. Our oldest guest was Percy Mason from Wickham Market who was born and bred in the village and is 92 years old. The Caterers were Rich Pickings from Harleston. I gave the Legion Tribute at the start with mention made of five members who had passed away during the past year. Branch Chaplain Rev’d David Streeter said ‘Grace’ and speeches were made by The Rev’d Ben Sasada, chaplain of the Diss RBL Branch, Peter Gipson from Bacton ,the immediate past County RBL Chairman, John Graham our Vice-Chairman, and John Elliott from the Hoxne RBL Branch. Our Dinner theme this year was ‘Our Future’. Our President Ted Bootle presented branch Standard Bearer Ian Bushnell with the Ken Richardson Memorial Shield, and I presented The Tommy Campbell-Preston Memorial Tankard to Albert Siggers. All the Ladies present received Gift Wrapped Pot Plants, and John and Jill Graham ran a draw, which raised £204. The Guest Speaker at the April Meeting was Roger Plant, who is The Governor of ‘Warren Point’ Prison in Suffolk. It was a most interesting talk and I gave the Vote of Thanks on behalf of the 14 members present. The highlight of the business part of the meeting was the welcome of our New Branch Treasurer Roy Neil who lives in the village. We all wish him well in office.

Thanks to all those who helped with the Dinner was given, and Jeremy Higgins presented the Accounts as the past Acting Treasurer. Dates are now fixed for the Coffee Morning, and the next Committee Meeting. Details were given for The County Walk, Horham Bygones, and the next H Group Meeting on the 23rd April at 7.30 pm to be hosted by The Branch at The Laxfield King’s Head. We are hoping to arrange a visit in September to Halsey House the RBL Home in Cromer. The Guest Speaker at our next Branch Meeting on the 7th May at 11.30 am at The Laxfield King’s head will be Lt. General Sir Christopher Wallace, who is the Chairman of The Royal Green Jackets Museum.

Over 60’s We had a very pleasant afternoon on 2nd April with an Easter Bingo, followed by a cup of tea with hot cross buns and our usual raffle and auction. Our next meetings will be on Thursday 7th May and 21st May. On Thursday 4th June we will have a trip out to Seacroft Holiday Centre at Hemsby where we will have a 3 course carvery lunch with a little entertainment to follow. If anyone would like to join us for the day the coach will leave the Community Centre at 10.00am arriving back home by 6.00pm. The cost will be £11 inclusive . Stradbroke Women’s Institute

The Easter Fayre, held in early April, was a great success raising the grand total of £580.50. Our President, Sue Grey, present Wendy Reeves a cheque for this amount to go towards replacing the kitchen units in the Community Centre.

Frances Hert spoke to us at our April meeting on Venice Waterways. She gave us a fascinating insight into how Venice originated, how the Opera House burned down in 1996, right through to the singing Gondoliers of today! Many of us were reminded of our memorable holidays there. Irene Rogers gave the vote of thanks for us, well-done Irene, and Wendy Reeves won the competition. We are looking forward to our next meeting on Thursday 14th May at 7.30 pm in the Community Centre, where the theme will be “Passion and Plants”.

Neighbourhood Watch PC Tim Green intends to be in the library on Thursday 21 May 1100 to 1130 hours, to meet members of the public who wish to discuss concerns with him.

Thefts of agricultural and gardening equipment from outbuildings continue. In one case two offenders in balaclavas were disturbed trying to steal a Knapsack sprayer from a farm on 24 March. The offenders abandoned the sprayer and damaged their dark coloured estate vehicle on the rear offside as they escaped.

The Police are publicizing a possible case of rogue traders who worked on a driveway in the area recently, before demanding a considerable amount of money. There have been several cases of cheque overpayment scams in Suffolk recently. In response to an advert or online auction posting buyers offer to pay by cheque, deliberately write the cheque for more than required, then ask the seller to transfer back the difference. The original cheques are counterfeit; good enough to fool bank staff, and apparently when they bounce the seller is liable for the entire amount.

We had another very well supported Village Archive Slideshow on Friday 17th April which covered things from the original village workhouse to death in the pacific and desertion in Australia via witchraft, zeppelins and policing in the village since the 1860s, as well as Stradbroke’s doctors going back to the early 1700s.

It was some of the cast of the village pageant held as part of “Salute the Soldier Week” in 1944 The next meeting is the SLHG Annual General Meeting which will take place at 7.00p.m on May 5th at the Community Centre, Wilby Road.

Stradbroke & District Pre-School with Stradbroke Bumps, Babies & Toddler Group.

A big thank you to everyone who attended our Easter Bingo Night on Friday 3rd April, we hope to let you know how much we raised next month.

We are planning a sponsored ‘Toddle’ followed by a Family Picnic with Punch & Judy and a barbeque on Sunday 10th May. We hope to raise money for a charity other than our own, for Leukaemia Research in memory of a dear friend and Pre-School mum who passed away earlier this year. We are aiming to get as many Toddler and Pre-School aged children as we can to walk (or be pushed in a pushchair) through the village, starting at 11.00am from the Pre-School heading up the hill to Neaves Lane. We will then hold the picnic and Punch & Judy on the meadow at Street Farm, Laxfield Road. We would like the children to come in fancy dress and get as many sponsors as they can. Sponsor forms are available from Pre-school, Toddler Group or by calling Louise on 384460.

Some important events coming up later in the year: Following the huge success of the 80’s Disco held last October; we shall be holding a ‘Skool Disco’ on Saturday 12th September at the Community Centre – more details to follow. Also, our Quiz Night on Friday 25th September and Christmas Bingo on Friday 27th November. Stradbroke Bumps, Babies and Toddler Group meets every Wednesday 10:00 – 12:00 during term time at the Community Centre. Later this year it will be taken over by the Debenham Children’s Centre and later, Eye. It will continue to run at the same time but with all new toys and craft activities. We would like to thank everyone for helping with setting-up, refreshments and craft, but a special thank you must go to Zoe Shears who has run the group for a number of years with minimal moaning!

A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. Car Boot Sale in Stradbroke There will be a Car Boot Sale on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May, from 10am to 2pm at the Playing Field with pitches available at £5 (in advance) £7 (on the day) and an admission of just 20p. As well as car boots, there will be various stalls, refreshments, burger van (& ice cream van!), a grand raffle, bouncy castle for the kids, and an assault course.

South & Heart of Suffolk Walking Festival Sunday May 24th, An 11 mile walk around Stradbroke. Picnic lunch at Wilby Green During the period of May 9th to May 25th a Festival Programme of 56 walks throughout Suffolk has been organised at what many people believe to be the most attractive time of year to see our area on foot. This is when Suffolk is at its most luxuriantly green and fertile best.

One of the walks starts from Stradbroke Community Centre at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday May 24th. Do join us! Bring a picnic lunch to have in a sheltered spot near Wilby Green.

We expect to be back at the Community Centre a little before 4.00 pm.

There is no need to book and there is no charge although a voluntary donation of £1 towards the Friends of Stradbroke Church would be welcome. No dogs please.

Do join us and other ramblers from all over the East Anglia!

P.s. There will also be a programme of three Summer Evening walks at the beginning of July to be announced later.

Horham Bygones Country Rally Saturday, June 13, 2009, 10am-5pm.

Horham Bygones Country Rally looks as if it is going to be bigger and better than ever this year. Originally started in 2002 as a one-off event to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee the rally has gone from strength to strength and become an annual feature in the small Suffolk village of Horham between Eye and Stradbroke. The event on Saturday June 13th 2009 from 10am until 5pm - was hoping to attract more than 100 historic tractors for the first time this year but early entries mean organisers are setting their sights on up to 150 machines. The tractors will join historic military vehicles, cars and motorcycles as well as working horses and mules. As well as being a big draw for anyone who wants to see old farm machines and horses in action it is also big fun day for all the family as there will also be fairground rides for smaller children and a car boot sale among other attractions. Last year approximately 1,500 people attended. Not only does the event generate much needed funds for the Horham Community Council it also offers charities, including the Royal British Legion, East Anglian Children’s Hospice, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Millennium Farm Trust and Parakeet Rescue, the opportunity to attend, free of charge, in order to promote their organisations and raise funds. Horham Bygones Country Rally is on Horham & Athelington Recreation Field on the B1117 between Eye and Stradbroke.

Admission: adults £4, concessions £2, family ticket £10, accompanied under 5s free.

'The HideOut' 'The HideOut' (formerly known as Stradbroke Youth Centre) from Stradbroke are getting on their bikes on Sunday 12th July 2009 to help prevent cruelty to children. By burning rubber as part of the NSPCC’s ‘Big Bike Ride’ , 'The Hideout' is helping to fund crucial services such as ChildLine and the Child Protection Helpline. Last year, the Child Protection Helpline received over 120,000 calls from children and adults. But the NSPCC is not able to answer every call because a cash injection is desperately needed. ChildLine volunteer counsellors are only able to answer just over half of all calls from vulnerable young people.

'The Hideout' said: “We are doing the big bike ride because as young people we feel it really valuable, supporting vulnerable children within our country and we want to help raise funds to support the NSPCC’s vital services for children. The more people who take part in Stradbroke, the more children we can help.” On ‘Big Bike Ride’ weekend - 27-29 June - Our club 'The Hideout' will join hundreds of groups of bike riding friends, families and colleagues who’ll be using pedal power to raise thousands of pounds to put a full stop to child cruelty.

Georgina Gunn, ‘Big Bike Ride’ project manager, said: “The ‘Big Bike Ride’ attracts cyclists of all ages and abilities - from lycra-clad enthusiasts to small children on trikes. Organising your own bike ride, could not be easier,” continued Georgina, “People of all ages and abilities are welcome to take part, whether they arrange a bike ride for friends in a local park or a muddy high-energy mountain bike trail in the country. Any distance makes a difference to children and young people who are dealing with the trauma of abuse.”

St Elizabeth Hospice is looking for helpers on the ladies only Midnight Walk Saturday 23rd May 2009.

Over 1600 women have already signed up to complete the eight mile circuit around Ipswich town centre in aid of the local charity. Volunteers are needed on the night to help with duties such as car parking, serving refreshments and registration. Patsy Johnson, events co-ordinator at St Elizabeth Hospice said “We have been overwhelmed by the response, it has been amazing and we even had to introduce a deadline for registration forms, Friday 1st May. Although the Midnight Walk is a ladies only event, we are looking for both male and female volunteers. Volunteers are required during the day on Saturday 23rd May to help with putting up signs, general administration and organisational support. During the event, volunteers are needed to help with registration, marshalling the walk, serving refreshments, car parking and various other duties. We would be grateful for any time that you could spare, even if it is only an hour or two. Volunteers play an essential role at the Midnight Walk The Midnight Walk is a great event to be part of, whether you are walking or volunteering, the atmosphere will be fantastic.”

Stradbroke Cricket Club So much has gone on behind the scenes at the Cricket Club in the past months; it will be a great pleasure & distraction to get out onto the field of play. I want to thank the 19 club volunteers, & 6 Nat West staff who spent the weekend, painting, cleaning, tidying, grass cutting & rolling at the Playing field, and erecting a partition in the shed/scorebox, in readiness for the new season, as part of Nat West Banks Cricket Force. Well done!

The 1st XI are part of the Suffolk Premier League, the A Team play their first match in the top division of the MSC Alliance on Sunday 19th, while the B Team continue to improve. The Academy side goes from strength to strength with increased membership, and match opportunities. There are also full programmes for the Under 15, Under 13, & Under 11 age groups, while the girls already have 10 matches to play this year. The Club has also been chosen to host a Suffolk Under 15 girls County match in July, and a Mid Suffolk Under 13 Representative game on May 26th.

Off the field the Club has always had a thriving social & fund raising programme, polarised this year by the need to contribute towards the project to drain the Playing Field, a vital measure to help with the increased use of the area (see above). Another £190 was added to the coffers as our share of the takings from the Easter Music Marathon held at the Queens Head. Despite the good weather, the villagers supported the event, as well as a record number tuning in on the internet, pledging their hard earned on line, while enjoying the innovative video stream. Final details of the much-anticipated Car Boot Sale can be found elsewhere. There is still time to book a pitch, or just come along. There are no Car Boots in the area, so if it is a success, it may be an annual event. Just ring Carrie Barnes on 388654. Such was the success of the Horse Race Evening; we will be arranging a Dog Racing Night in September. Same format as horses, but with smaller jockeys! Last word on recruitment. The Chance to Shine programme starts in 5 local Primary Schools after the Easter Holidays, and hopefully an upturn in junior membership on the back of it. If you are a parent of a prospective young cricketer, from 8th May, Friday Night is Club Night at the Playing Field. All juniors (boys) are welcome from 6pm to 8pm.

There will be qualified coaching for all levels, and every fourth Friday there will be an inter club match. Parents are encouraged to stay & watch. There may even be a barbecue & liquid refreshment. Girls coaching is every Michael Hugman Monday, same times starting 11th May. Good cricketing.

Many thanks to everyone who helped to make our Pudding Party on Saturday 4th April so successful and raise approximately £450.00.for funds The evening really went with a swing with so many delicious savoury and sweet puddings to tempt us and, of course, the Blind Auction, which caused a few laughs and some surprises. If you did not manage to get along to our Opening Day on the green, please call in on Wednesday or Saturday afternoons when we have our club afternoons, 2.00 pm – 4.00 pm and you can join in.

Our first match is on Tuesday 21st April in the Waveney Triples League, so our practice roll-up on our open day was really important. Good luck to all our teams! It’s that time of year again when the sun starts to permeate the winter woollies, you start to feel a bit restless and want to do a bit of exercise; not just getting out of bed, but a little bit more.

Well, it’s the time to start preparing for the upper-midSuffolk inter-village games competition. Some of you may have heard about it, but many will have not. It’s been kept very quiet and in the past only a chosen few have been invited to participate. But, this year all that has changed! Now under new management the organising committee (I hate that word) is opening it up to all; young and old, beautiful and not so beautiful, as well as the fit and unfit! This year there are 10 villages participating such as Metfield (the host) Fressingfield, Laxfield etc...

You will hear more about the programme in the coming weeks, but now is the time for you to get in touch, or if you’re shy, wait to be touched, because you surely will! We want your support, both moral and physical to help put Stradbroke back on the map as a thriving, energetic and interactive community. The games start on June 20th and finish with a finale on Sunday June 28th with events and activities for all the family.

During the week before the finale there will be Clay pigeon shooting, a treasure Hunt (in a car), Team Quiz, Pool, Rounders, Darts, Crib, Carpet Bowls and Junior Football (phew!). Sunday 28th will be “A grand day out” to include events from Cross country running to Bean Bag racing; Relay Races to Welly Throwing; 80m sprints to Egg throwing and Basket Ball shooting to a Blind Obstacle Race.

Gardeners Notes I asked my son how I should start my article this month and he said "Spring is here, time to get out your shorts and forks", I have to say that just about sums up the weather we have had in April.

With any luck by the time this article comes out we will have had a decent amount of rain as it is starting to get a bit dry. If you need to sow grass now is the time. Break up the surface of the soil with a fork then rake it until you get a good crumbly layer. I have found mixing the grass seed with sand or compost helps to sow more evenly. It is better to let the rain water the area in and once germinated (about 2 - 3 weeks) water occasionally and well if weather is dry.Don't be tempted to bring out tender plants too soon.

This article comes out in the beginning of May which is about as early as I would recommend, but we may get a frost so keep an eye out until the end of May when it should be safe.If you are potting plants on or digging in your border keep an eye out for vine weevil larvae. They attack the roots of plants, particularly herbaceous plants. In pots they will go for just about anything. Signs to for look out for are plants that are struggling, compost coming out of holes under the pot and plants that lift out of their pots having lost most of their roots. You can use a non-chemical control like watering on a nematode, but I have found the best way to control them in pots is with a chemical control as from now on they will turn into adults and move around your garden. I have also hand picked them out of the compost in pots which is effective but time consuming, they look like maggots with an orange/red head, they then have to be squashed. Another pest to keep an eye out for is the lily beetle, they will decimate your lilies, look out for bright red beetles on the foliage and careful when picking then off as they have a tendency to drop to the ground if disturbed. The vegetable garden is in full swing and remember what I said about tender plants, this applies to things like tomatoes, beans and marrows, you should really wait until the end of May, beginning of June, if you put then out too early they won't grow any quicker. Keep watch for cats when sowing seeds in vegetable beds, try to cover the area with sticks or string until things have germinated. Make sure you sow things with enough space between rows to hoe the weeds later on.

I won't be giving any hints about this as I am also entering the competition and am quietly confident that my secret recipe will make all the difference.
