The Stradbroke Monthly Remembrance Day The names that are carved into Stradbroke’s War Memorial will be read out on Remembrance Sunday as they have been since the memorial was dedicated in 1922. They are the names of Stradbroke’s young men who gave their lives in times of war. They were young men who were part of the community; they walked the same streets as we do today; they enjoyed life while it was theirs to enjoy. Although most of us will only know them as “names” their families and friends remember them as the real people that they were. Such as Roland Lines…

God’s Glory and Mans Dignity O Lord our Lord your greatness is seen in all the world! Your praise reaches up into the heavens; it is sung by children and babies You are safe and secure from your enemies; you stop anyone who opposes you. When I look at the sky, which you have made, at the moon and the stars, which you have set in their placeswhat is man, that you think of him; mere man, that you care for him? Yet you made him inferior only to yourself; you crowned him with glory and honour. You appointed him ruler over everything you made; you placed him over all creation; Sheep and cattle, and all the wild animals too; the birds and the fish and the creatures in the seas. O Lord our Lord your greatness is seen in all the world! Psalm 8 from the Good News Bible

All Saints Church Fund Raising Committee To date our 6 ladies have raised £4562.38p with 2 more events for the year still to come, so don’t forget the X Mass Coffee Morning on the 13th November at the “Chantry” Queen Street courtesy of Anne & Jeremy. Our “Fund Raising Team” has been together for several years so it is with regret that I tell you that we are losing Marjorie Roberts who, with Cyril, will soon be moving from our area to be nearer to their family. Also, unfortunately, Pat Fill is unable to undertake duties as she is awaiting an operation at the Papworth Hospital, which hopefully will be very soon. The rest of our depleted committee wish all of them good luck for the future and get well soon Pat, we miss your cakes!! We have an X Mass Cake Stall on the 6th December manned by Janet and Mary so please look out for us! The Harvest Supper was quite well supported with a delicious meal accompanied by Hand Bells from Brome and Oakley, which were appreciated. This and music from Dougie meant that we raised £287.70. We hope to reach (and exceed) the £5000 mark so we hope to see you all at the last two events. Mary Ellis
The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, Many thanks go to all those who contributed to our Flower Festival in September, when so much in the Church was admired and appreciated, raising nearly £1,000, and I am most grateful to the visiting bell ringers who rang a celebratory peal on Saturday morning. Three weeks later, the tower had a new use when 25 climbers to the top of the 100 steps abseiled down its west face, giving themselves an exciting experience and gaining £250 for our funds. The Harvest Festival also brought colour and music into the church, and two splendid harvest loaves from our village bakery. The Primary School children were enthusiastic with their gifts, their songs and their art work, and donations are being sent to the Diocese of Kagera, in Tanzania, East Africa, and to Christian Aid. The Remembrance Sunday Service is at All Saints this year, after we meet round the War Memorial at 10.50 am on Sunday, 9th November, and with RBL members, we will also be there at 11.00 am on the 11th. I will be making a Christmas Cake for the Bazaar and Coffee Morning at The Chantry on Thursday 13th November (and for The Over Sixties on 29th November). Do ask me for a Draw Ticket to give you a chance of winning a cake, and helping a good cause. Holy Communion on most Sundays of the year is at 8.00 am. It is also at 10.00 am or 11.15 am three times a year for the Benefice Communion when we welcome churchgoers from Horham, Athelington & Redlingfield, and go to each of their churches in the other months. Four times a year, as announced, we have a Family Communion Service on the first Sunday in the month, at 10.00 a.m. Now, we are also going to have a Parish Communion Service on the last Sunday in the month at 10.00 am. We look forward to seeing many of you. Do tell me, or another member of the Church Council, what time you prefer for attendance at services, and what type of service you like. In the last twenty-five years, we have spent about £250,000 on repairs and maintenance of the church building; we need to make very good use of it now, and in the future. With all good wishes, David Streeter. Church cleaning will take place on Thursday, 6th. November in All Saints Church, 10.00 am onwards. Margaret Streeter

Stradbroke Parish Council The Parish Pump! Public Forum No items were brought to the attention of the Parish Council this month. Planning The following items were considered by the Parish Council: 3167/08 Dismantle two Corsican pine The Hall, Queens Street 2289/08 Proposed erection of porch Grove Cottage, Stradbroke Both the above had approval recommended. Karen Hillen declared a personal interest in item 2289/08, took no part in the discussion and did not vote. Results of planning applications considered by MSDC since the Parish Council last met: The following had planning permission granted: 3026/08 to remove a variety of poplar tree plus three offshoot tress the roots of which may be affecting the foundations of a neighbouring house, no 8 Willow Close 10 Willow Close 2545/08 new conservatory to rear of dwelling 16 Woodfields 2407/08 variation of condition 5 of Planning Permission 2680/06 to include the wording ‘above ground level’ so that the condition only restricts the insertion of windows above ground floor level Garden land formally (sic) attached to ‘Sunnymede’ New St Other Planning Matters: 1317/08 erection of 4x dwelling houses, associated parking and new vehicular access went to committee 08 Oct 08 and was refused planning permission Land to rear of 1&2 Westhall Karen Hillen & Peter Smith to attend Planning workshop 30 Oct 08 at MSDC A letter from Mr D Johnson was read out, in full, by the Chairman. Mr Johnson expressed his concern that the favourable result of his appeal to the Planning Inspectorate had not been reported in the Stradbroke Monthly. The Clerk regrets any distress caused to Mr & Mrs Johnson for this omission but as the item featured in the meeting which occurred following the closing date for the magazine and this was unavoidable. Notification of the result of the appeal was detailed in the minutes of the July meeting which were freely available in the library for all residents to view. Other Business Proposed Drainage of the Playing Field – the Working Party is to investigate further the availability of grant funding for this proposal. An additional suggestion has been put forward to incorporate a fitness track around the perimeter of the Playing Field to ensure the area can be fully utilised by all residents. Parish Magazine – the possible purchase of a printer to produce the magazine more efficiently in the future was considered in outline. To enable costs and handling to be reduced it may be preferable to reduce the number of pages per edition. The number of editions was also discussed as for August and particularly for January, there are noticeably fewer articles submitted. It was suggested that the December edition could easily be a combined December/January edition. Wendy Reeves has stepped down from her role with collation but Claudene Merritt has come forward to pick up the baton. The Chairman recorded thanks to Wendy for her past efforts and welcomed Claudene to the team. Again it was reminded that volunteers (in any capacity) are always very welcome. Yet again – dog excreta – it had been reported to Councillors that there is a regular nuisance of dog excreta on the pavements near the primary school. This is unacceptable and anti social in the extreme. Children entering school frequently have to have their shoes washed off by school staff before they can enter their classes. Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy

Seventeen members and guests attended the October Meeting when the Guest Speaker was Les Larnder from Sibton who spoke about the history of ‘Smythe Drills’ and the Factory at Peasenhall. Our Secretary Jeremy Higgins gave a report on The Legion Information Day that he had attended, and The Branch Treasurer Roger Gwyn who gave his last monthly report before he retires from office followed. Stradbroke Wine Society At our last meeting on Saturday 11th October 2008, a show of hands indicated that very few of us had been to South Africa but none the less we all enjoyed their wines! Our speaker, Sue Humphrey, told us about the history and locations of the wine regions and she said South Africa was producing some very exciting wines, six of which we tasted. Members agreed that it was a great evening. Our festive season meeting is on December 6th, which is a Spanish and Portuguese evening with food and wine. Claudene Merritt

We all enjoyed a very good meeting in October but sadly we all had to bid farewell to Marjorie Roberts who, with her husband, will be moving away at the end of the month. We all wish them every happiness in their new lives; we shall miss you and thank you both for you support, especially Marjorie’s lovely flower arrangements. Jane Parker, who is the Head Registrar of Suffolk, came to speak to us about her life as a registrar. She regaled us with stories from her working life, many humorous and some tragic. We learned many things like the most popular names for baby girls at the moment are Grace and Ruby with Jack and Thomas being the most popular for baby boys. The old names are making a come back! Jane gave us a quiz to finish, which proved that we didn’t know as much as we thought. Pru Rush was finally declared the winner after a dead heat. Well-done Pru! Betty Chittock won the competition for a `cute wedding photo’ and our congratulations go to her. Our next meeting is at 7.30 pm on Thursday 13th November in the Community Centre. Neighbourhood Watch PC Tim Green will be in the library on Thursday 20 November from 1100 AM to 1130 AM to meet members of the public who wish to discuss concerns with him. I am not making the following up. Two friends in Norwich were due to go to university and had glittering careers ahead of them. Walking home, over refreshed after an exuberant bonfire night party, they put a lit firework through a neighbour’s letterbox. The family got out of the house but the pet dog died in the ensuing fire. The two friends are due to be released in the near future. Nick Thompson

We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. Stradbroke Primary School I cannot believe that we are already approaching half term! Time goes very quickly when you work in a school and I never find myself clock watching in this job! You may have seen Stradbroke Primary in the local newspapers a lot recently. First of all there was coverage of the “Mini-monsters” road show. This was great fun with the zoologist Kate Jackson bringing her collection of creepy crawlies to meet the children. My personal favourite is Ripple the Giant African Snail, but I heard a lot of children talking about how they would now like a hissing cockroach as a pet! (Sorry parents!)
I wonder what Luke would make of this one?! Editor!
When Tim Page the Waveney Valley Ranger visited the children to conduct pond-dipping an exciting discovery was made. Stradbroke Primary has it’s own endangered species the Great Crested Newt! This news also appeared in the local press. Our youngest pupils received their own news coverage as “Class of the week”. They have settled in really well and this week meet Jane Hissey author of the “Old Bear” stories at Stradbroke Library. We have appointed a new Mid-day Supervisory Assistant following the promotion of a member of staff but are now looking for another one due to the retirement of a long serving member of staff at Christmas. If you have time each day to spare between 11.45am and 1.00pm this could be the perfect vacancy for you! Please contact Mrs. Read our school secretary (01379) 384415 for further information. Tomorrow the development of our outdoor Infant play area begins. This begins a new and exciting development in our Early Years provision. Our youngest learners will shortly be able to enjoy outside activities whatever the weather, in our sheltered play area. We say goodbye to Mrs Hill our Class 1 teacher for now. She is taking maternity leave and we send her our very best wishes. Half-term awaits and I will write shortly with news of the second half of the Autumn term (when preparations for Christmas begin!) Melanie Barrow, Headteacher of Stradbroke Primary.

Organisations IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL CONTRIBUTORS
At the October ’08 meeting of the Parish Council it was agreed that there will be one edition of the magazine covering December ’08 and January ’09. The reasons for this are:• there are very few submissions for the January edition; and • the date for submissions for January is very early because of the Christmas holiday period. • Volunteers ( editor, layout, collators, printers deliverers etc) also have to prepare for Christmas! So please make a note in your diaries; all dates, events, articles and news for both December and January must be submitted by 21ST NOVEMBER 2008. Ann Kerr, Chair, Parish Council

Stradbroke Cinema—“Kite Runner” (12A) We were slightly disappointed by the turn out for our last Monthly Cinema in October but the film we saw was very good and enjoyed by the select audience that saw it. In November we are, unfortunately, forced to change our choice of Mamma Mia because it is not going to be released now until the end of the month. Mamma Mia will now be shown on Thursday 4th December as a pre-Christmas Show (yes Christmas is a-coming!). We hope that you will be able to make this change of date and come and sing along and possibly dance as well! However we will still be having a film on the 20th November and after a ballot of the audience at the last film night, we have chosen “Kite Runner” (12A). The film Kite Runner is about an illiterate Afghan boy who has an uncanny ability to predict where a downed kite will land. Growing up in the city of Kabul in the early 1970’s, Hassan was Amir’s closest friend even though the 11 year old had a face “like a Chinese Doll” Hassan was the son of Amir’s fathers servant and a member of Afghanistan’s despised Hazara minority. The film spans the final days of Afghanistan’s monarchy to the atrocities of the Taliban reign, a tale of fathers and sons, friendship and betrayal and unlikely friendships. Dorothy Readman

Christmas Day Dip! At 10am on Christmas Day, hoards of brave people will be running into the icy North Sea at Cobbolds Point, Felixstowe to raise funds for the Hospice. Last year, this event raised over £6000 and we hope that you will join us in making this year even bigger and better. This is a great chance to do something different on Christmas morning and really work up an appetite for your Christmas dinner! St Elizabeth Hospice provides specialist care and support for people in East Suffolk who have a life-limiting illness for whom the focus of care is quality of life. The Hospice is an independent local charity and all services are provided free of charge. In total it costs £5.2 million each year to run the Hospice, of which 77% is raised by supporters. For more information regarding the Christmas day dip or how you can get involved, please contact the fundraising team on 01473 723600, email fundraising@stelizabethhospice.org.uk or visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk Photograph: Staff from Michael Richards hairdressers took part in the Christmas day dip last year. For our third year we will be raising funds for the East Anglian Air Ambulance a charity that seem close to many peoples hearts. We hope to make a start on the first weekend in November with the roof (weather permitting) and then work our way round the house and lawn ready for the “Switch-on” on the first of December. The light will be on from 5.00pm until 10.00pm from the 1st December through to the 6th January 2009 hopefully with no problems this year going into darkness! Stradbroke Cricket Club Whether it was wisdom, or luck, to continue playing cricket to the end of September, it was blessed with some great weather. Having already earned some silverware in the shape of the John Bright Memorial Plate, they duly defied even higher mathematics to capture the MSC Section B title with another routine victory over Needham Market. This means that the A Team has lost just 2 league & 1 cup match in two seasons (all 3 at Waldringfield!).Skipper David Allum, far from the cares of captaincy, found time to score 1041 runs in all matches, only the 3rd occasion a Stradbroke player has passed 1000 runs in a season. Steve Warner took 63 wickets, the clubs largest haul for 15 years, but leaving him tantalisingly on 499 career wickets. The curtain came down on the season with the traditional Presidents Match. President Don Lummis chose 11 players living within the village boundary, and they responded with a 39 run win over a team from the outlying area. 22 club members still playing at the end of September, added to a Mums v Girls match, which the mums gained revenge for their 2006 defeat, plus the Dads v Lads match earlier in the summer, means that there is something for everyone at Stradbroke CC. The Annual Presentation Evening will be held at the Community Centre on Saturday 25th October, where guest speaker, Essex & England wicket keeper James Foster, will hand out 20 trophies. Report on that next month. Michael Hugman

Local Gardeners Notes Local Gardeners Notes As much as I miss the summer months (not that we had much of one) I really enjoy the autumn colour that we are experiencing at the moment, particularly on a bright sunny day, the field maples look very vivid in the hedgerows and if you are lucky enough to have spindle in your hedge they have a wonderful colour. Trees and shrubs to look out for if you want autumn colour in your garden are the smoke bush, particularly Cotinus 'Grace' if you have lots of space, at least 3 metres, of not Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' tolerates prunning and can be contained, Cornus alba known for it's winter stem colour has good leaf colour, Amelanchier lamarchii is a large shrub or small tree with spring flowers, berries and autumn colour. Trees including Liquidamber, varieties of hawthorn and crab apples are all good, with crab apples also acting as a universal pollinator if you have an orchard. Climbers that are worth thinking of if you have the space are the virginia creeper (Parthenocissus Heryana), Boston ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) and Vitis coignetiae, the crimson glory vine, the latter having the advantage of tendrils to climb not ariel roots so it doesn't ruin your brick work. It is at this time of year that I like to encourage people to collect the fallen leaves and make Cotinus coggygria your own compost. This year it is more important than 'Royal Purple' ever because, as you may have read, a lot of people have lost their crops after using contaminated manure, this particularly affected tomatoes, potatoes and legumes. It just goes to show that it is best to make your own compost and know what goes into it, a lot of people try to grow organically, especially when growing food crops, and this means what goes into the soil as much as what is put on the plants. Other jobs to be thinking of are tidy roses to stop wind damaging them. Make sure you lift, cover or bring in tender plants. Plant trees, hedging and roses Potentilla fruticosa while the soil is still warm, plant onion sets and garlic, cut back asparagus ferns as they go brown, and continue to plant bulbs. Plants still looking good are sedums, rudbeckias, Helianthus 'Lemon Queen' and heucheras, potentilla fruticosa will still be flowering having been going for most of the summer. Perovskia 'Blue Spire' also has a long season of flowering, plumbaginoides look good now and lastly look out for naked ladies (crocus autumnale) the autumn flowering crocus that flowers on bare stems. People often ask me about taking cuttings and now is a good time to take hardwood cuttings. Use this season's growth and push it into a good free draining soil in a sheltered position in the garden, in the spring, once buds start to break, cut back to about 3 to 4 buds so energy goes into root formation, by autumn it will be suitable for planting out. We have had a good autumn, weather wise, and my son Jack and I made the most of it with a marathon cycle ride to Aldeburgh, we found some very nice back roads and were Crocus Autumnale rewarded with a ice cream, needless to say, we then got a lift so we did't have to cycle back, maybe next time.
