Stradbroke First Responders - Update! Stradbroke First Responders has now been up and running for nearly 5 months and we have had an even stream of calls over the period May to August 2009. Out of the 23 calls received and attended, 9 of those were for the Stradbroke area. As our scheme is linked with the Laxfield scheme, we can cover quite a few areas including Wilby, Brundish and Fressingfield. At present we are sharing a kit with Laxfield but very shortly, due to kind donations from various people and groups, we shall have 2 kits of our own. Recent donations have been received from the WI in Stradbroke and Robin Brice from Rattlerow Farms. The scheme is very grateful to these people, as we have been able to furnish our kits with the equipment that is much needed. I would like to say thank you to the volunteers who have joined the scheme as I could not have set up such an important service for the community without them. They are Rita Chilvers, Julia Green, Ann Baker and Marianne Pierce-Sanderson. There are another 4 people currently processing their applications to join and again a big thank you to them for their interest in serving the community. Finally, may I ask is your house name or number displayed on the front of your property? This can cause delays if we, or our fellow volunteers from Laxfield, cannot find you. Vital minutes have been lost in the past because of this problem. Please help us, or any emergency service, to help you. If you are interested in joining this scheme or would like more information, please call me on 01379 384323. Alternatively, you can email me at nickyjmcdonald@googlemail.com. Last month I said that all was under control but my honeymoon period is now over. The clock suddenly started to lose 5 minutes per hour or one hour in every twelve. It chimed at odd times and every body blamed me. David Streeter arranged for a clock expert called Clive to come and I joined him in the tower. Apparently the flywheel (Clive called it the fly) sat in worn bushes and had started to stick. I tried to look knowledgeable as he pointed out other worn bushes and we both nodded shrewdly. It needs an overhaul soon which means, sadly, no clock for a while and then hopefully years ahead of good timekeeping. David Merritt

But the ‘hymn’ is still true, we need God’s input to provide a harvest. In fact all we use to create our modern society, is, but a recycling of the abundant variety which God has provided for our discovery and use. Please report defective street lights to Suffolk County Council on 0800 591 055

The Church Clock repairs have been arranged! Photo Derek Routen.

Affordable Housing Prior to the start of the meeting Sunila Osborne of Suffolk ACRE addressed the Council on the subject of affordable housing surveys. It is quite some time since such a survey was undertaken in the village and Councillors were of the opinion that up to date information was needed prior to embarking on another. Planning Applications considered: 2366/09 Rear single storey extension to form new bedroom and ensuite. Existing garage to be converted to form a dining room. The Coach House, Church Street Approval was recommended. Results of planning applications considered by MSDC since the Parish Council last met: The following had planning permission granted: 1856/09 re-build porch with oak timber frame Manor Farm, Fressingfield Rd 1277/09 repairs to timber frame. Reinstate south attic window in existing opening. Replace 5 windows to ground floor (revised designs to those approved under 4096/08 Manor Farm, Fressingfield Rd 1905/09 erection of new garage (following demolition of existing) Rookswood, Bayles Way Other Matters: The annual audit report had been received. All was satisfactory and the statement was approved. There had been some concerns about the fencing and log edging at the play park at Westhall. These have now been addressed. Some remedial work was also required at the Community Centre Play Park and this would be attended to The street light opposite Skinners had been out for quite some time, despite many calls to have it repaired. This has now been attended to. Please either report defective street lights to Suffolk County Council on 0800 591 055 or contact the Clerk. News Items New Parish Councillor: Oliver Last was co-opted onto the Parish Council at this meeting and was welcomed by the Chairman. Church Clock: It had not escaped many people’s notice that the church clock had been running slightly out of kilter recently, prior to being stopped. Repairs had been arranged and the Parish Council agreed, in principle, to make a donation towards the work. Playing Field Drainage: The work on this project commenced and, by the time this magazine is being read, should be almost completed. Hurrah! This has been a long time coming but the end is now in sight and cricket and football would soon be played on a first class surface. Stradbroke Monthly Editor: The Council learned, with regret, that Tony Ambler will be hanging up his green eye shade in March next year after three years in the Editor’s chair. He has put in a terrific amount of work on the magazine and will be a hard act to follow. This gives any budding Citizen Kane the opportunity to put their skills to work for the village! If you have an interest in doing your bit for village life this could be your chance! Please give Tony a call for information; he would be delighted to hear from you. Alternatively you can call Ann Kerr on 01379 384975 or email parishmagazine@stradbroke.org.uk The next meeting of the Parish Council: 12 October 2009 at 7.30pm Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy tel: 01379 384679 email: clerkspc@thesmys.com ** Please make any non-emergency calls to the Clerk between ** ** 0830 and 1800hrs Monday to Friday only. **

Life in the Legion Jack Goulding from Hoxne was the Guest Speaker at the September Meeting at The King’s Head Laxfield, and his subject was ‘A Year in China.’ He illustrated a most interesting talk with coloured slides, and was thanked by Branch Secretary Jeremy Higgins on behalf of the members present. In the tribute at the start of the meeting we mentioned in particular those killed as a result of the ongoing war in Afghanistan. Jeremy Higgins presented the Treasurers report as Roy Neil could not attend, and a Committee Meeting was arranged at The Chantry on September 24th at 6pm. Letters will be sent to all members with details of the AGM on November 5th, the forthcoming Launch of The Poppy Appeal in Stradbroke on the 23rd October and in Laxfield on the 24th October, and The Christmas Carols and Lunch on the 10th December. The County Report was given by Nick Eade, The H Group Representative on The County Committee, and he also gave details of the H Group AGM at Brome on Wednesday 28th October. This is to be hosted by The Hoxne Branch. The next Branch Meeting in on Thursday 1st October at 11.30am at The King’s Head Laxfield and the Guest Speaker will be Michael Graham from Ipswich. Members please attend if you can. Our members have been out and about. John Graham attended a Caseworker Course at Woodbridge, and Alan King has visited the Normandy Battlefields with his daughter Joyce Cooper on a Poppy Travel Excursion, and Jeremy Higgins, Albert Siggers and myself attended a Recruiting Conference at The RBL Club at Lakenheath. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

Stradbroke Primary School I am delighted like to be sharing news from Stradbroke Primary once again. I have returned to school from Maternity Leave and I am happy to announce that I am now a parent to a lovely baby girl. It is always great to see parents and children again after the Summer break. We welcome our new Reception class and eight older new children and their families to Stradbroke. As ever, I invite parents choosing schools this year to contact me for a chat and tour of Stradbroke Primary. Choosing the right school is one of the most important decisions a parent has to make for their child- I am always happy to assist with this. This term promises to be a fun and busy one. You may have seen some interestingly dressed children walking around Stradbroke recently- Class 2 held a “pirate” day and we had some great costumes. All classes are currently busy preparing for our forthcoming harvest festival at Stradbroke Church. Our brass band the “music makers” will also be performing at various school events this term. Our youngest children are able to use our Infant play area now and we starting work to expand our ICT suite and library. Stradbroke Primary is a good place to be and I look forward to sharing more news with you as the year progresses. Melanie Barrow, Headteacher.

Balloon fun for the Women’s Institute last month!

We welcomed two visitors to our September meeting, Sam and June, both newcomers to Stradbroke and we do hope that they enjoyed the evening and will come again. After the business of the evening was over, Ally Riding spoke to us on “Balloon Fun”, and it proved to be just that – a great fun evening. Ally works for the Stenna Line, entertaining children on the ships. We learned quite a lot about balloons, how to produce various animals and many shapes for all occasions. Some of our favourites were a Rocking Horse, Palm Tree complete with climbing Monkey, a huge Flower, a Bee, Giraffe and many more. The “piece de resistance”, was I feel, the three Penguins from large to small. Absolutely beautiful! Mobile phones came into use to take pictures of Irene and Phyllis who, with a little help form A|ly and amid lots of laughter, did their best to produce a dog each, Fido and Fifi. I gave the vote of thanks and Betty Chittock won the competition with her greatdecorated balloon. Well-done ladies! Our next meeting is on October the 8th; 7.30pm in the Community Centre so do come along and join us. Iris Badcock, Press Secretary

Neighbourhood Watch PCSO Steven Long intends to be in the Library on Thursday 22nd October 11.00 until 11.30am to meet members of the public who wish to discuss any concerns they might have. There were two incidents recently in the area of a thief pretending to be an electrical engineer who talks his way into people’s houses and then steals their cash. The individual is described as a white male between 40 and 50 years old with a chubby round face. There were also several incidents reported in Suffolk recently of two males both with Irish accents carrying out gardening work for people and then refusing to leave without an excessive payment. Advice for dealing with these types of incidents was detailed in last month magazine. People in Suffolk have also been caught out in share scams where they have bought worthless shares and lost large sums of money. People should only buy shares from accredited dealers (these can be checked on line at www.fsa.gov.uk/register) and, like all things in life, if a deal seems to good to be true then it probably is! Last Halloween an elderly couple in Stradbroke had eggs thrown at their front door The police will issue posters, available from the and windows. Similar incidents this year should be reported to the police using 999 Post Office from late immediately. The police will issue posters, available from the Post Office from late OcOctober, for members of tober, for members of the public who do not wish to become involved in “Trick or the public who do not wish Treat”. These posters, which should be displayed on the front of your property, tells to become involved in Trick or Treaters that you are not to be bothered. The police also intend to request “Trick or Treat”. traders in the area to only sell eggs to adults in the run up to Halloween to prevent a repetition of last years events. And finally, I have got to give up Neighbourhood Watch at the end of this year having done it for 2 years so if anybody wishes to take over please contact me on the number below. Please use the following numbers to contact Police: Crime and suspicious activity should be reported on the following numbers, preferably as it is happening: Emergencies: 999 Non-urgent calls charged at a local rate to the following police switchboards: 01473 613500 (first choice) or 01986 835300. At last months meeting the weather, for once this summer, was unkind and we didn’t get much done outside but we did record all the tombstones inside the church. We will continue to record the stones in the churchyard as and when members have time. October Meeting - Wednesday 7th October at 7.00pm in The Community Centre. Have you ever wondered what happens when a big development takes place and an archaeological evaluation is required or how Archaeology is managed in Suffolk? Have you found something ancient and corroded buried in your garden(old lawnmower engines don’t count, neither does Great Aunt Maud )? If you would like to know more about how our past is evaluated and protected then please come along to this month’s meeting. Our speaker is John Newman who works in Suffolk County Council’s Archaeological Service. John will explain how archaeology is organised in Suffolk and the sort of work he does with contractors on different types of projects. If you have any “finds” please bring them along and John will try to identify them for you. Non Members £2 ( includes tea, coffee and biscuits after the meeting ) Mike Readman

Over 60’s Club We continue to have good attendance at our fortnightly meetings. We had a day trip to Felixstowe in July when a few of our friends joined us. Our next meeting is on Thursday 1st October. Please remember that there will be no meeting on the 15th October as we have our last trip of the year to Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday the 14th October leaving the Community Centre at 10.00am. We will be leaving Bury St Edmunds at 3.30 so we should be home at around 5.00pm. Anyone wishing to join us on this trip will be most welcome and the fare will be £5.00. Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. English Vineyards seldom produce good red wines because our climate is not hot enough. However, on the 5th September we visited Carter’s Vineyard in Essex and were all treated to a short video, a trail through the vines, a tour of the winery, the tasting of 5 of their wines and some liqueurs followed by supper. One of the wines was red and, although we felt it maybe lacked some body, it was a delightful fresh “summer” wine. If our climate continues to warm then it is anticipated that fuller bodied reds will be produced. Our next event is at the Stradbroke Community Centre on Saturday 31st October at 7.00pm when Helen Duddridge will be talking us through tasting of “Old World and New World Wines”. If you enjoy wine and would like to join our society please give me a call on 01379 384439. Claudene Merritt

Help for Churches Would you be prepared to help our parish churches by ‘examining’ their annual accounts? As churches are public bodies, they are required to have their accounts reviewed by someone independent of the PCC (Parochial Church Council) but suitable people are sometimes difficult to find. I am trying to compile a list of people available to do this within our local area. Church accounts do not, in general, need full audit, merely a common-sense check. Anyone who has been in business or been a clerk/treasurer would probably have the necessary knowledge and skills but, of course, discretion and confidentiality are essential. There is advice available from the Charity Commission and the Diocese. Examination usually takes place February/March of each year. Any arrangement would be directly with the PCC in question; and, in my experience, examiners generally offer their services free but there may well be a tangible ‘appreciation’. If you are interested, please contact me on 01379 669258 or mary.lewis@tecova.com Mary Lewis, Hoxne Deanery Organiser, Diocese of St Edmundsbury & Ipswich

Community Centre Car Park The Parish Council is pleased to announce that the main car park and the one behind the Swimming Pool are to be marked out with proper parking bays once the drainage works on the Field are complete. This will create 52 marked spaces and makes better use of the three parking areas that we have. The standard is to be the wider ones used at Morrisons in Diss, not the narrower ones at Tescos or the near side of the Railway Station! Gerald Jenkins

Fair Trade News Shop @ Eye Parish Church open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 11am – 1pm . Here again with a quick update. We had a fabulous week in the Church Shop during the Art Exhibition – thanks to everyone who helped out and bought things! As it was so successful we have decided to do the Big Fair Trade Day at Eye Parish Church on WEDNESDAY 11TH NOVEMBER 11AM – 7PM. There will be a huge display of Fairly Traded food, gifts, stationery, incense, clothes and Christmas goodies available to buy – and we are going to turn it into a party, with cakes, balloons and food sampling – with refreshments available all day. By this time, building work in the Church will be complete and it will be a great opportunity to show off the Abbey Room (and use our own toilets!) This will be our biggest event for over 2 years so do put the date in your diary. Events we are taking a stall to in October include: Syleham & Wingfield Village Hall Mini market and craft fair 10am – 4pm on Saturday 17th October. Eye Green Fair 10am – 4pm Saturday 31st October Framlingham market on Saturday 3rd & 24th October. You’ll notice that the Church Shop hours have gone back to just 3 days a week again – sorry everyone but we just don’t see enough customers at this time of year (oddly!) to justify more open time to volunteers. My diary is still quite empty for the autumn/winter season – so if you would like the fair trade stall to come to your Christmas events just give me a call. Contact: Sue Watson 01379 384558.

Sports Roundup

Stradbroke Cricket Club You know the cricket season is over when a huge trench appears across the Playing Field. The talking has stopped, the drainage project has started. On the field, the 1st XI slipped to 10th in the Suffolk Premier League. Successive defeats to Needham Market, heavily, & Walsham, narrowly, despite a career best 87 from josh Franklin-Mann, saw to that. The A Team consolidated their place in Section A. Despite 127 from Alan Barker, 66 from Simon Higgins, & 48 from Stuart Taylor, Caribbeans overhauled their 256 (Lee Bedwell 5 for 60). This was followed by a fine win over Ipswich (Higgins 103, Bedwell 6 for 29), then a defeat at Yoxford. David Allum(38) & Joe Pearson (41) top scored, then Sam Johnson took 3 for 47. Their last game was against Wortham. Barker (56), Alex Fitchett(34) & Steve Warner(33) took Strad to 211 then Bedwell, again with 4 for 18 finished the job. The B Team finally fulfilled their potential. Defeat at Felixstowe (Scott Turner 44), was followed by 229 v DBSL (Michael Hugman 55, Franklin-Mann 50, Dan Tompkins 42) but it was still not enough. Then a record 268 at Worlingworth (Franklin-Mann 76, Tompkins 76) set up a win completed by Dan Manley 3 for 30). The Academy played 14 matches. Their last league game was an exciting draw against Eye. James Webster took 4 for 60, the Fitchett(53) & Allum(38) got within 5 runs of victory. Defeat followed against Mellis despite 44 from Hugman, & 32 from Chris Bacon. There were only 2 youth matches, but both were finals. The Under 13’s restricted Lowestoft to 118 for 3, then knocked off the runs, Tom Davey(31), Lewis Taylor(26), & Kieran Allum(21), doing the damage. The Under 11’s then won their NSYL Final against Garboldisham. Davey, again with 32, Will Bacon with 23 set a challenging target. It looked to be a close finish until Spencer Davey’s spectacular catch. Off the field, details of the Greyhound Race Evening on Saturday 3rd October, can be found elsewhere. The Annual Presentation Evening will be held this year on Saturday 24th October, and the club is delighted that England Captain Charlotte Edwards will be the guest speaker. Details of how you can be there from me. Michael Hugman.

Stradbroke Football Club At last we have sorted out a venue to play, which will be at the High School due to the pitch being drained. We will change as usual at the Pavilion. Training will also hopefully be at the school, in the Sports Hall; more details later. It was kind of somebody to paint our dugout very colourful, but not our choice. The last Bingo night raised £61.10 and the next one will be on the 9th October at 7.30pm in the Community Centre. Please make an effort to come along so that the cash prizes are bigger. Football results: !st team lost to Sporting 87 1 – 0. and lost to Henley 3 – 1. Reserves won 1 – 0 at Ipswich Rovers. The Club has now handed over £1,000 towards the cost of the pitch drainage. Mary Ellis

Stradbroke & District Bowls Club. Our bowling green is now having a “rest” after so much use over the 2009 season; soon the preparation for next season will begin, with lots of hard work for those involved. A very big thank you to all those who helped to keep the green in such good condition in what was a very hot summer. The two young bowlers who competed in the National final in Skegness didn’t come home with any silverware, but gained a lot of experience, which will prove useful in the coming seasons. Well done Lee and Thomas. League final results are as follows: Saxmundham League Finished fourth. Upper Waveney Triples Finished fourth Unfortunately we do not yet have the Woodbridge League final results. Many thanks to all the bowlers who represented the Club in League and Cup Matches. We will be holding some very much-needed fund-raising events in the coming months so we hope to meet up with you there. Lily Lofts

Gardeners Notes I believe that the Stradbroke Village flower show had more entries this year than ever before. Unfortunately we had booked to go away for the week and all I managed to enter was my potatoes in a bucket. Surprisingly (to me at least) I didn't win, but did achieve what I thought was a very impressive 2lb 14oz, until that is, I found out that the winning total was about 6lb and everyone I bump into in the village seems to have got at least 4lb, never mind, there is always next year! Even though the weather has been very dry here in Suffolk over the summer we have managed to get a good crop of most vegetables and a bumper crop of plums which my son Jack and I have already turned into jam. I got a good tip on growing carrots today from a lady I met in Kenton. She cuts an old plastic barrel in half and puts holes in the bottom, she them fills it up with soil to about 6 inches/15cm from the top. Then sows the carrots in spring, this way she gets great carrots and because they grow below the top of the barrel she doesn't have a problem with carrot root fly. There are plenty of jobs to be getting on with, keep cutting back dead growth and the flower beds will look good until we get a frost. Plants looking good now are Japanese Anenomes in shades of pink and white, they tolerate semi shade to full shade as long as the soil is not too dry, Erigeron or fleabane, a small daisy that grows in cracks in paving is a great little plant. Asters are now in full swing with Aster x frikartii 'Monch' and Aster ' Little Carlow' being particularly good. And if I have said it once I will say it a thousand times that you can's beat dahlias for late summer colour as long as you can be bothered to protect them over winter. They always mention on gardening programmes that you can split herbaceous plants bought at nurseries and garden centers and at this time of year a lot of places sell herbaceous plants off cheaply. More often than not it is just a question of splitting the plant in two, and some times you can get many plants from one pot. Now is the time to get your bulbs in, don't worry if you haven't done it yet as the ground has been so dry they won't have done anything yet, As well as the usual Narcissus and Tulips why not try Crocus, Spring anemones, Camassias Muscari (particularly the white ones) and Scilla. For an Alliumthat's a bit unusual try Allium Bulgaricum and finally for something very special you should try the fox tail lilly Evemurus. I have found that all these grow well if planted as bulbs/corms etc in the autumn. I mentioned that we went away during the summer, we were lucky enough to go to the Isle of Mull in Scotland, it was about as great a contrast to the landscape around here as you could imagine, we managed to see a basking shark, eagles, buzzards, razorbills and plenty of gannets. On the island of Iona I saw a very large organic allotment which reminded me of trying to get allotments going in Stradbroke, if anyone knows of any land in or near the village that may be suitable please contact me at the Wheelwrights or by the village website. otes N s r e n e /Gard /profile k .u g r .o adbroke Happy gardening, Luke. www.str
