Stradbroke First Responders - Update! Stradbroke First Responders has now been up and running for nearly 5 months and we have had an even stream of calls over the period May to August 2009. Out of the 23 calls received and attended, 9 of those were for the Stradbroke area. As our scheme is linked with the Laxfield scheme, we can cover quite a few areas including Wilby, Brundish and Fressingfield. At present we are sharing a kit with Laxfield but very shortly, due to kind donations from various people and groups, we shall have 2 kits of our own. Recent donations have been received from the WI in Stradbroke and Robin Brice from Rattlerow Farms. The scheme is very grateful to these people, as we have been able to furnish our kits with the equipment that is much needed. I would like to say thank you to the volunteers who have joined the scheme as I could not have set up such an important service for the community without them. They are Rita Chilvers, Julia Green, Ann Baker and Marianne Pierce-Sanderson. There are another 4 people currently processing their applications to join and again a big thank you to them for their interest in serving the community. Finally, may I ask is your house name or number displayed on the front of your property? This can cause delays if we, or our fellow volunteers from Laxfield, cannot find you. Vital minutes have been lost in the past because of this problem. Please help us, or any emergency service, to help you. If you are interested in joining this scheme or would like more information, please call me on 01379 384323. Alternatively, you can email me at nickyjmcdonald@googlemail.com. Last month I said that all was under control but my honeymoon period is now over. The clock suddenly started to lose 5 minutes per hour or one hour in every twelve. It chimed at odd times and every body blamed me. David Streeter arranged for a clock expert called Clive to come and I joined him in the tower. Apparently the flywheel (Clive called it the fly) sat in worn bushes and had started to stick. I tried to look knowledgeable as he pointed out other worn bushes and we both nodded shrewdly. It needs an overhaul soon which means, sadly, no clock for a while and then hopefully years ahead of good timekeeping. David Merritt
