Back to School Celebrations in Stradbroke! September has arrived and it is “back to school” time! September this year is a special time for one of our schools, as on Friday 25th September 2009, SBEC (as it is today) will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of it’s opening as Stradbroke Secondary Modern School (as it was then). Both our schools were expensive to build in their time, with the Secondary Modern School costing £90,000 when it was built in 1959 and the Primary School £855 when it was built in 1863/64. Ceremonies and celebrations marked both openings and though the fashions may have changed both events marked a huge step forward in the development of the village of Stradbroke.
Opening Day at Stradbroke Primary School on September 28th 1864. Parents and family watch from the sidelines as the new school is opened
You may not have been at the opening of the Primary School but there will be many people who were at the High School in it’s first five years. SBEC would like to hear from anyone involved with the school at that time so please dig out those old photos and any memorabilia and contact SBEC. Details inside the magazine. Mike Readman, SLHG

Our monthly Coffee Morning has moved to Saturday 26th from 10–12noon. This is our opportunity to support TWAM (Tools with a Mission) by both bringing along our old tools and sharing a cup of coffee, we also hope to raise some cash to help in the cost of transporting these much wanted tools to their destination. Contact Daphne 384175 or Angela 388751. Sunday 27th at 10:15a.m. Time of thanksgiving for Harvest both locally and worldwide and to hear more of the work of TWAM. Why not join us? Don’t forget WE NEED YOUR HELP! As mentioned last month, this month we plan to support the work of TOOLS WITH A MISSION in short TWAM. TWAM enables people to earn a living and to support themselves. In many countries of the world people have few skills, little education and no means of earning a living. A switch from aid dependency to self-sufficiency is impossible without help. TWAM started 23 years ago, and has since then given this help by collecting and refurbishing tools (this is done in Ipswich) and equipment no longer required in the UK and sending them overseas. During the first six months of this year TWAM has dispatched 7 containers to Africa, 4 to Zambia, 2 to Uganda, 1 to Rwanda. For more information visit www.twam.co.uk. Click on 25years. HOW CAN YOU HELP? 1. Watch out for list of wanted tools coming through your letterbox w/c 31st August. Or telephone one of the numbers below for a list. 2. Search out any relevant old tools and bring them along on the 26th. If you require any more information or have tools which you would like collected please contact either Eric on 388173, John on 388751, Malcolm on 384797 or anyone you know who attends the Baptist Church. We look forward to working together to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Eric Havers.

The cost will be £7.00 and will also include entertainment by “Fred” (not to be missed). The Rectory - Tel: 384363 Email: davidstreeter@suffolkonline.net Dear Friends, The Church Service Times do have a new pattern, and we look forward to seeing you there and then. Before writing this on 21st August, I completed my entries for the Village Show, including “A Flower Arrangement in a basket”. I shall be taking a basket of fruit and vegetables, and other harvest goodies, to the Community Centre on Tuesday, 8th September, for my talk and demonstration. Please support the Friends of the Church that evening, as we prepare for our Harvest Thanksgiving on 10th, 11th & 12th October, a Three-Day Flower Festival, when we shall welcome the Bishop of Dunwich as the Preacher at 11.00 am on Sunday morning, and Margaret and I will celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary. On Saturday, 12th September, the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust invites us to go out on our bicycles from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm (note the earlier time), having collected sponsors, (please ask me for a sponsorship form), to raise money for the Trust which “We shall welcome the Bishop of Dunwich, The Right Reverend Clive makes grants for the maintenance of our church buildings, and for our own Young as the Preacher at 11.00 am funds, to ensure that the church building lives and is alive with our prayers, on Sunday 11th October” praises and varied activities. We shall indeed be active early in October, decorating the church, and getting ready what is needed to promote thanksgiving, concern for others, entertainment and worship. Inside, the church can offer large walls where the space can be filled with art and colour. This month, on Saturday and Sunday, 19th and 20th September, there is an amazing opportunity to do this. Artist Tina McCallan will be at Wingfield Barns on those days, from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, guiding us in a “Recreation” of a famous painting. It is divided into 64 or more squares – we spend some of that time at Wingfield recreating that picture with our square. The final result is far bigger than the original, and we have all recreated it! It’s free to take part! Do please let me know if you would like to be part of a great artistic event that is not to be missed. We are also going to abseil down the 100ft church tower in October. Ask me for details. With all good wishes, David Streeter. All Saints Church Cleaning will be on Thursday 3rd September from 10.00am onwards.

Replace 5 windows to ground floor (revised designs to those approved under 4096/08 Manor Farm, Fressingfield Rd 1905/09 erection of new garage (following demolition of existing) Rookswood, Bayles Way Approval was recommended for all three applications Results of planning applications considered by MSDC since the Parish Council last met: The following had planning permission granted: 1621/09 erection of first floor rear extension and single storey rear extension (existing attached outbuilding to be removed) together with alterations to fenestration Ashfield House, Laxfield Road Other Planning Matters: Registration of Parish Land - the Chairman thought it would be prudent for the future to have all land owned by the Parish Council registered and had asked the Clerk to begin the process of collating as much information as possible. This would be a fairly long process. News Items Car Parking: The Parish Council is looking into the possibility of marking out the Community Centre Car Park to bring about a more efficient use of the available space. The area would be the same but more cars could be accommodated if bays were to be marked out. Churchyard: Work has begun on the management of the wildlife area now much of the debris has been cleared. The Parish Council would like to thank the young people whose hard work has resulted in a good clear space. An informal working party will get together to clear the last of the branches. Rubbish: Bin bags of plastic bottles and other rubbish have been left near the pool’s wheelie bin. Please note: this is not the place for it. Plastic bottles are to be placed in domestic green bins for recycling - there is NO facility at the recycling point. All other rubbish should be left at the appropriate place for collection. Parish Council Vacancy: As reported last month there is a vacancy on the Parish Council so if you feel you could make a contribution to village life then feel free to throw your hat into the ring! This new member will be co-opted at the September meeting. PLEASE let the Clerk know as soon as possible, and before the 1st September, if you wish to put your name forward for this exciting challenge. All interested parties should they wish, will have the opportunity, prior to the start of business on 14 September, to tell the Council about themselves before the decision is made. A maximum of three minutes per person will be given. Some members of the community have already expressed an interest so don’t be left out. Please note: The September meeting will commence at 7.15pm Clerk to the Parish Council: Carol A Smy tel: 01379 384679 email: clerkspc@thesmys.com **please make any non-emergency calls to the Clerk between 0830 and 1800hrs Monday to Friday only**

Life in the Legion Albert Daisley from Laxfield was the Guest Speaker at the August monthly midday meeting of The Branch and spoke about his ‘National Service’. He brought along items and photographs of his service and I gave him the usual ‘Vote of Thanks’ on behalf of the members present. In the Tribute at the start of the meeting I mentioned the recent death of member Roy Birch, and also all those killed in the present conflict in Afghanistan. I also welcomed to their first meeting David Johnson from Stradbroke and Alfred Briggs from Laxfield. The minutes were read by the Assistant Branch Secretary Graham Neale. I thanked all those who had helped with our Annual Coffee Morning, and also gave a report on the local H Group Meeting held at The Botesdale Greyhound. Treasurer Roy Neil gave his monthly report, and Branch President Ted Bootle mentioned the new ‘Legion Special D Day enamel pin badge’ as mentioned in The Legion extra news Magazine. The guest speaker at the next meeting of the Branch will be Jack Golding from Hoxne on the subject of ‘China’. This will be held at The King’s Head Laxfield on Thursday September 3rd starting at 11.30am. Members please attend if you are able. Michael Burton – Branch Chairman.

Organisations Stradbroke Women’s Institute We were rather short of members at our August meeting; people were on holiday, having grand children to stay or simply having a day out. Those that were there heard Carol Chittock talking about Hedgehogs and how to look after them. They are now on the decline and are an endangered species. They are fascinating creatures, have a vigorous sex life and certainly chase the ladies who can, apparently, be very choosy. If you ever find an injured Hedgehog, or a baby one, keep it warm and phone 01379 644988 for help and advice. Their favourite treat is, by the way, dark chocolate drops!. Dorothy Readman thanked Carol for such an interesting evening and Mary Dann won the competition. Well-done ladies! Our next meeting is on Thursday 10th September in the Community Centre at 7.30pm, do join us then. Iris Badcock, Press Secretary
Hedgehogs were the topic for discussion at the Womens Institute last month.

Last month’s puzzle picture: It certainly does look a little different today. The large sycamore tree on the right of the picture gave the corner it’s name. It is Sycamore Corner where Church Street, joins Wilby Road and New Street. Today the trees are gone and the frontages are a little different. Just in case you still can’t place it the full picture is shown this time and you can tell from the lamp on the front of Town House porch that the photographer would have been standing in Church Street, outside today’s SPAR shop. September Meeting We are going to start recording the headstones in the churchyard and the tombstones in the church itself. We have made a small start but would like to get as much as we can done before winter. So if you would like to scramble around the churchyard helping us decipher faded inscriptions please join us. If you have a digital camera please bring it along, although a pen and paper will be just as useful, Wonderful though technology is, we have found that a keen eye can sometimes see more than the camera can ! We hope the weather will be kind, so please join us on Wednesday 2nd September at 7.00pm in the church for instructions and grave maps, Gardening gloves and a penknife might prove useful. Suffolk Family Carers We are an independent charity, our services are free! A Family Carer is defined as any age; ‘looking after’ a relative, friend, partner, parent/s or child/siblings who cannot manage without them because of illness, age or physical, learning or mental health difficulties. Many Family Carers, care for more than one person. The main concerns are when caring impacts on every part of the Family Carers’ life. It is then, especially, that support is needed which is more focused, planned, and often outside the home, with a complete break from the caring role. This we know sustains situations, otherwise there would be many more people cared for in residential homes, hospitals and other establishments. East Anglian Air Ambulance, We need you today. You may need us tomorrow On average the EAAA are called to four incidents a day, life threatening situations such as road traffic accidents, incidents involving people in inaccessible places, cardiac arrests. Because of the advanced skills, drugs and equipment found on board, and being able to access places impossible for a land ambulance, the EAAA can make the difference. Next time the Air Ambulance is called out, it could be to you so why not support the EAAA by attending High Sufolk Rotary Club’s Charity Ball. Even better, invite some friends and make up a table. The Rotary Club of High Suffolk are supporting EAAA as our preferred charity this year. Proceeds of our major fund raising event, our annual Charity Ball, will be donated to them. The black tie ball is being held Saturday, 17th October 2009 at Framlingham College starting at 7pm and finishing at 12.30am. There will be a champagne reception and dinner. Dancing throughout the evening to the popular El Gato’s Men and an exciting casino. Other entertainment will happen during the evening. Tickets will be priced at £45 per person. Come to this fun packed evening and help to keep the helicopters flying. This combines a wonderful night out while benefiting a very worthwhile charity For further information contact: Carol Garrett on 07768 960368 or chgarrett@tiscali.co.uk or any member of High Suffolk Rotary Club.
Time weighs heavily... David Merritt has recently taken on responsibility for the clock in the church tower. Here he talks about the friendly chimes we are all so familiar with…
Before 1870 Stradbroke had a non-chiming sundial...
“Twice a week for 20 years Bob Rayson climbed the dark, dusty, worn stone, cobwebbed, spiral staircase and cranked up weights with large handles to wind the Church Clock. Many of us hear its chimes as we lay in bed in the morning and with out opening our eyes count 4…5…6, that’s ok no need to get up yet: another hours snooze. Just suppose it chimed 6 at 7 or 8 o’clock. What a panic when realised!
...after 1870 the new clock gave us the latest Victorian technology!
The Church Clock was built by Cooke of York for £125 and installed around 1870, giving good service for 140 years. Its cogs and levers are large and well machined and it is powered by weights, which slowly move down the tower. The large weight is over half a ton and just powers the heavy bell clanger. The other smaller weight keeps the clock ticking. Regularity is maintained by a pendulum – no digital, electric or atomic power system here. On hot days the pendulum is longer which slows the clock and it is fast on cold days. Small weights have to be repeatedly added and removed so the good folk of Stradbroke can rely on it being close to God’s time. Bob Rayson has moved away now to deepest Norfolk and the clock job has fallen to me. Whilst just a beginner struggling with antique technology, I am getting the hang of it but wish I was a Time Lord.” David Merritt

Stradbroke Cricket Club A month of ups and downs for the Cricket Club at all levels. After an interminable gap, the 1st XI returned to action, still in 3rd place in the Suffolk Premier League. However defeats to Yoxford & Great Yeldham mean a mid table finish is likely. A chance of silverware was scuppered at Worlington in the Premier Plate, where they found 259 too many to chase despite 65 from James Ling. The A Team should stay clear from relegation in Alliance Section A. They showed real ability to beat BT, centring around 149 from Simon Higgins, the 2nd highest individual score in the clubs history, overshadowing the 5 for 47 taken by Lee Bedwell. Stuart Taylor (57) & Sam Johnson(47) were not enough to beat Sudbourne. Taylor scored 60 in a losing cause against Kesgrave, leaving a tense end to the season. They relinquished their grip on the John Bright Memorial Plate. The usual suspects Higgins(81) & Taylor(59) against Woodbridge, set up a semi final at Worlingworth, but they failed to set a big enough target despite 70 from Steve Warner. The B Team have suffered two big defeats at Rosary & Castle, but will be heartened by the batting form of Liam Smith & Ross Bedwell, and that of Owen Morgan, whose 56 saw them home against C&G. Academy fixtures come thick & fast, with wins over Yoxford & Kesgrave being the highlights, with Taylor scoring 101 in the Kesgrave match. Defeat against Lowestoft was tempered by a first 50 for James Grigg. As far as youth is concerned, the future is bright. The Under 13’s have won their last 7 League games and will face Lowestoft in the North Suffolk Final. Kieran Allum(70) & Liam Smith(65) put on 115 v Eye, backed up by the bowling of Liam Fairweather & Tom Hargrave. Smith went one better against Wortham with a career best 83, but their best performance was at Garboldisham where they restricted the home side to 82, winning easily. The Under 11’s are also in the final, having lost just one game, beating Easton, Worlingworth(twice) & Yoxford(twice) on the way. But it is the girls who have made the biggest strides, playing the the Regional Finals of the Lady Taverners Under 15 Cup as Champions of Suffolk. They performed well against Kelveden(Essex) 50 v 88 (Ellie Johnson 20), were hammered by the eventual winners Bells Yew Green(Sussex) 104 v 29, then lost their 5th/6th play off against Hemel Hempstead off the last ball, despite 28 from Johnson & 10 from Tori Coleman. Seven of the girls are eligible to play next year, so the experience was good for them. The photo shows the 8 girls who played at Chigwell School (Tori Coleman, Tilly Heydon, Ellie Johnson, Florence Vane, Lauren Slowley, Chloe Ackerley, Lottie Ackerley, & Megan Garrod). Off the field, the next fund raising event is a Greyhound Racing Evening on Saturday 3rd October at the Community Centre. It’s like the Horse Racing Evening except it’s dogs. Entrance is £6 including Fish & Chips. Enquiries to me please. Michael Hugman
Stradbroke Tennis Club As the “Summer Season” is coming to an end, the club reports that over the last months the season has gone generally well. Club nights held on a Friday have been disappointing with number down on previous years and, although membership has increased slightly, members seem reluctant to play on club nights. It has been encouraging to see that more juniors have joined the club and are playing, which is due to the coaching courses offered and run by LTA registered coach Tim Bedwell. Tim has run a number of well attended courses in conjunction with the Schools Sports Programme and the Swimming Pool. Teams that have entered in the leagues have been well placed in the Lowestoft League with the first team having finished a creditable third position in division one which has a very high standard. The second team finished halfway in division two which again was a good performance. In the South Norfolk League, the mixed “A” team have again finished top in division one and as all the fixtures of the “B” team have not been completed the final results have yet to be decided. Stradbroke were well presented in the South Norfolk championships held at the Diss Tennis Centre. Colin Revell and Tim Bedwell were crowned champions in the men’s event and mother and son, Judith and Tim Bedwell were champions in the mixed event, this they accomplished by only dropping two games during the whole tournament. Again Stradbroke have entered the Winter Floodlight League where most matches will be played on Monday Evenings. Club nights will continue through the autumn on a Friday subject to the weather and members are welcome to attend and play their tennis under the floodlights. John Bedwell.

Stradbroke Football Club We have had one friendly match, away to Harleston, which we won 3 – 2. The scorers were N. Oliver, C. Chittock and K. Wythe; a good pre-season run out. We start matches soon when we hope to be up at the High School because of the field being drained. The Club thanks everybody for their patience and we look forward to coming back to our pitch in the New Year. Training is still on the field at present and Bobby Varela would like to see more members coming Wednesday evenings at 7.00pm. The last Bingo evening raised £49.10 with the next one on Friday September 11th at 7.30pm in the Community Centre. Remember, the more people playing the bigger the cash payout! Mary Ellis

Gardeners Notes We have enjoyed a good August after a rather wet July, where things are starting to get quite dry. It's worth keeping an eye on shrubs and trees that are struggling, particularly any that are under the canopy of large trees. September is a busy month with harvesting and cutting back tired summer growth. Plants that benefit from a good tidy are Alchemilla mollis, Nepeta, Salvia (herbaceous ones) and Geraniums. This will give them the opportunity to put on new growth and look good into the winter. While you are cutting back keep an eye out for dried seed heads on poppies, aquilegias, foxgloves and other similar plants. You can either collect the seeds in paper bags or sprinkle them on areas of bare soil. It is a good time to cut evergreen hedges as the summer growth has slowed but still allowing time for a little growth before the winter. Try not to do it in the heat of the day, particularly on plants like box. At the beginning of August the cemetery wildflower area had it's annual cut and Ben and Matthew Hammond collected the cuttings up for me to spread on the church yard wild area, this is to encourage a greater selection of wildflowers, it's a good economic way of spreading wild seed on an area but the grass cuttings must be collected as soon as it is cut otherwise the seed will be released too early. A visit and a report from Suffolk Wildlife Trust offered helpful suggestions for ways to improve the wildlife area and congratulated us on the work done to date. The weather this year has contributed to cases of blight affecting potatoes and tomatoes. Any plants showing signs should be removed with tomatoes being pulled up and burnt or put in a bag in your normal black rubbish bin, don't be tempted to compost as the blight will survive in the soil. Foliage should be cut off potatoes and disposed of in the same way. The potatoes themselves should be lifted and any showing signs thrown away. It's worth remembering the variety used this year and try a more resistant variety next year. Tomatoes grown under glass are less susceptible as blight is air born. Crop rotation is also important to reduce the chance next year. I normally end my article recommending a walk Don’t spread blight to your locally or some other wildlife experience, at the beginning of August we compost bin! travelled to Bungay and hired a four-man canoe and paddled off down the Waveney river stopping off along the way for a picnic on the water meadow near Earsham. It was a great way to see wildlife and a very beautiful part of Suffolk. We have taken lots of walks over the time we have lived here along various parts otes rdenersN a G / of the Waveney Valley and feel it's a bit of a e il .uk/prof g r .o e k hidden gem. adbro www.str Any questions please contact me at The Wheelwrights in Church Street or via my new link on the Stradbroke Village website where you can also read the Gardener's Notes from previous magazines (should you be that way inclined). Enjoy the last of the summer, Luke
