Scholarship & Grant Impact Report 2019 - 2020
RACHEL BROWN Beta/Indiana 2020 scholarship recipient
When women join Kappa Alpha Theta, they bring with them hopes and dreams for the future. Their Theta sisters promise to hold them up and champion them to soar
higher than
they ever could alone. Theta Foundation embodies this spirit
of sisterhood
by providing opportunities for Thetas to pursue their academic ambitions and positively impact around them.

Scholarship & Grant Impact Report
the world
Theta Foundation’s scholarship program is at the heart of our work. Because of your generosity, more members are added to our long-standing tradition of supporting and encouraging our sisters academically every year. This support
is more important than ever as students
return to school in the ongoing aftermath of a global pandemic. Undoubtedly, the upcoming year will be drastically different from anything these students have ever experienced. We are overjoyed to be able to provide financial assistance to our members during this unsettled, uncertain time—giving them the
confidence to persist no matter the circumstances.
Our chapter and individual grants program is unique in the fact that it helps Thetas supplement their conventional education and training through experiential learning opportunities. These opportunities set them apart as leaders on their campuses and in their communities, driving them forward to lifelong success and enabling them to leave
the world better than they
found it along the way. We are delighted to announce that we have been able to award an unprecedented amount of funding during Kappa Alpha Theta’s sesquicentennial year. This milestone would not be possible without people like you, who have stood by Theta Foundation every step of the way. We hope you enjoy learning more about some of the best and brightest Thetas in the pages that follow. We are honored to play a small part in their stories of
determination, persistence, and success.

Scholarships Kappa Alpha Theta was founded 150 years ago as a nurturing space for encouragement and support in which members could pursue intellectual and personal excellence. Theta Foundation’s scholarship program exemplifies those ideals through awards that allow the women of today to step out into the world and fearlessly realize their dreams.
Because of your belief in the potential of Thetas everywhere, we are humbled to announce that this year, we awarded the highest amount of scholarship funding in our organization’s history: $869,130 These scholarship dollars will support 308 college and alumnae members as they pursue undergraduate and graduate study during the upcoming academic year. While school may look and feel different than it has in the past, we are proud that Theta Foundation scholarships are helping members persist despite uncertain circumstances. We hope you will join us as we cheer on this year’s incredible recipients.
Meet the 2020 Founders Memorial Scholarship Recipients The Founders Memorial Scholarships are awarded to the top four junior applicants every year. These scholarships are Theta Foundation’s most prestigious awards, valued at $12,000 each. The recipients are intentionally matched with a specific founder based on their shared qualities and accomplishments. These awards hold more significance than ever during this milestone year for Kappa Alpha Theta. Please join us in extending our most sincere congratulations to these trailblazing women!

PEYTON NEES Alpha Omicron/Oklahoma Public Relations Recipient of the 2020 Bettie Locke Hamilton Founders Memorial Scholarship
Peyton entered the University of Oklahoma as a member of the President’s Leadership Class, a highly selective first-year scholarship cohort. Early in her sophomore year, she was selected to serve in a coveted role as a student advisor to 120 first-year students as they transitioned to college. Also during her sophomore year, Peyton was slated as the chief executive officer of her chapter, during which time she recognized the importance and power of leading by example. In her application, she summed up her Theta experience thus far: “We are nothing without the strong women we aim to resemble, and Kappa Alpha Theta is where I found outstanding women who taught me to be a leading woman.” Peyton was recently selected as a David A. Burr Scholar, awarded to the highest achieving alumni of the President’s Leadership Class. Peyton is determined to use her leadership experiences to help others become better versions of themselves.
An innate leader, she closed her application with this: “Instilling and inspiring strong standards, much like a drop of dye in water, can transform the lives of those we touch along the way.”
HOPE CHERUBINI Beta Tau/Denison Psychology Recipient of the 2020 Alice Allen Brant Founders Memorial Scholarship
Hope’s passion for mental health awareness and breaking down stigmas surrounding therapy will drive her future endeavors: “We must all work together to make our world a more supportive place where everyone is accepted.”
In the fall of 2018, Hope conducted research on the effects of mindfulness and gratitude on short-term anxiety in college students. Her cohort found that listening to a short mindfulness recording significantly decreased physiological measures of anxiousness. The implications of this research project impressed the head of the psychology department, who referred Hope and her colleagues to the vice president of Denison University to collaborate on ways to address mental illness on campus. As a result, Hope was selected as part of a team to present this research at the prestigious Midwestern Psychological Association’s Psi Chi Conference. She has continued to advocate for practicing mindfulness and prioritizing mental health as a founding member of a new Mindfulness Club on campus.

CAROLINE CANTRELLE Delta Kappa/LSU Textiles, Apparel, & Merchandising Recipient of the 2020 Hannah Fitch Shaw Founders Memorial Scholarship
As the oldest of three sisters, Caroline aims to lead by example in everything she does: “Regardless of my involvement in someone’s life, I know that I have the opportunity to make an impact in one way or another, and I want to make it good.”
As a freshman, Caroline admired the leaders in her chapter who were courageous enough to take on difficult challenges, and she hoped to eventually be able to do the same. She attended both Grand Convention and the Emerging Leaders Institute the summer after her freshman year, which helped her expand upon her leadership capabilities and grow into her potential and love for Theta. By the end of that summer, she had met Theta sisters from across North America, and was more inspired than ever to leave her own impact on her chapter. She was slated as chief operating officer her sophomore year, and because of her disposition, changed the way the chapter views the position forever. She took on the role of a “big sister” to the entire chapter through sisterhood and member development initiatives. Her tenacity in this role ultimately led to her current role as chief executive officer.
EMILY ROBB Epsilon Phi/Chicago Philosophy & Political Science Recipient of the 2020 Bettie Tipton Lindsey Founders Memorial Scholarship
Emily is currently pursuing a Chicago Studies Certificate, which is awarded upon completion of specific community-engaged curriculum, over 200 hours of community service, and a unique capstone project. As part of this program, she volunteers over 60 hours a quarter with Jumpstart. The focus of Jumpstart is socioemotional and literacy skill development for underserved Chicago Public Schools, which has allowed her to become professionally trained in early childhood theory and practice. Her experiences as a Jumpstart team leader have shaped her long-term professional goals and she hopes to continue her educational involvement through legal services or policy work to advocate for kids whose voices go unheard. Emily currently serves her chapter as chief executive officer, and during her tenure she has implemented a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee to uplift marginalized voices just as she does for Chicago’s most vulnerable children. 6
Scholarship & Grant Impact Report
She says of her college experience thus far: “The best part about how I’ve chosen to engage with my community is the way in which the children I work with continuously inspire me to have my own positive impact on the world for them, and for that I am grateful.”

I feel grateful to tap into that again now, as an adult pursuing new academic and professional goals, knowing that this same group of women can continue to overcome differences and be a force for positive change.” DELAINE MAYER Gamma deuteron/ Ohio Wesleyan
