Back to Denim Laid back. Cool. Edgy. Relaxed. Trendy. Just some of the things that come to mind when we think all things denim! The thing about denim is that everyone assumes we’re talking about plain old jeans. Well, yes, actually we are, and a whole lot more. Where do we even start? Bootleg, skinny, high-waist, MOM jeans, Boyfriend jeans, Girlfriend jeans, the list goes on n on. Denim doesn’t stop there, of course, whatever happened to denim shorts? Pair it up with a white tee and some cute flats and you’re instantly vacation-ready. A more relaxed material is often used for denim skirts, dresses, and also shirts. They can be suitable for many occasions, it all depends on how you style them. Throw on a pair of heels to dress up your denim look for lunch, and further dress up with a blazer. Or maybe a pair of trainers with your skirt to dress it down for a casual brunch. In a hurry to make it to dinner? Red lipstick will always give you that extra touch you need and it goes perfectly with denim… well, everything does!

Hats Perhaps? As many of us are packing for vacation, let’s dig a bit deeper into our vacation wardrobe. What is the first thing that comes up in your mind when we say “beach destination”? Why hats, but of course! A big floppy hat covering half your face is a must when playing fashion police in Saint Tropez, or maybe just avoiding the harmful UV rays. Accessorizing is always a great way to jazz up your outfits, especially on vacation when you’re trying not to over pack (oh well, we try our best). Chilling pool-side in a red bikini with a floppy white hat will definitely turn heads. Or maybe a cute straw hat with your white jumpsuit heading to lunch at the beach club. There are numerous ways to play around with this trend. The best thing, hats are so light you can pack many and still have enough spare KGs in your baggage to pack those unnecessary high heels that you’ll never wear.

Christian Louboutin Fall/Winter 2018 Collection

In a playful display of eclecticism, Christian Louboutin unveils his Fall-Winter 2018 collection, a gallery of highly decorative pieces inspired by the energy of interior design from the 1960’s and 1970’s. It boldly stands at the crossroad between decoration and fashion. Letting in the creative freedom of the period, Christian Louboutin showcases inspiration with an expansive use of textures, colors and forms. Shaping a graphic alphabet of his own, he reveals intricate patterns and upholstery textiles, wood and mineral elements, all diverted from their ornamental purpose. Modernity reinvented: Combining velvety shades and glossy fabrics with blinding metallic highlights, the collection declares its elaborate style through audacious associations and daring lines: everything is possible! Museum pieces to slip on: The creative flare of Christian Louboutin just turned shoes into Objects d’Art worth exhibiting as such. Their sculptural lines share a common language with iconic pieces of furniture from this era: the original quest for pure, essential shapes. This exploration is expressed with soft-curved clutches and cabas exhibiting free-spirited combinations of bright colors and lavish materials.

Longchamp Amazone

World-renowned for its leather goods, footwear and high-end women’s ready-to-wear apparel, Longchamp unveils its new Amazone line inspired by powerful women who defy the status quo. Women who dare to wear a look that’s sophisticated, modern and sleek. That subtle dance between refined chic and today’s fashion is what makes this line’s premiere bag totally irresistible. It’s one-of-a-kind - The Amazone line has three different sizes of messenger bags that genuinely express that Parisian refinement, femininity and spirit cherished by Longchamp. It’s contemporary - The Amazone line is crafted with supple leather in black, and powder. It also comes in a python-print calfskin in shades of dusty pink, blush, and coral pink as well as gray, plus there’s a version with gray and white gradations. It’s exquisite - The edges of the bag are elegantly trimmed with a tone-on-tone or contrasting braided leather band. This ultra-feminine detail also appears in the middle of the flap on the messenger bag. It’s urban - Two versions in black or burgundy lambskin also have a wildly modern quilting design with a graphic look. It’s refined - The nickel saddle buckle conjures up the equestrian spirit that Longchamp treasures. It’s versatile - The Amazone bags have a sliding metal chain so they can be worn like a handbag, a shoulder bag or a cross-body – which means you can go from dressed up to dressed down and back. It’s essential - Amazone will become the new best friend of all Longchamp women – independent, liberated women who rule the world.

“Longchamp women are the 21st century Amazons. They own their femininity. I was thinking about them while creating this new line, says Sophie Delafontaine, Creative Director at Longchamp.

Carolina Herrera Evening Collection

A look back to the New York style of the sixties and to the work carried out by Andy Warhol in The Factory is the starting point of a collection, which constitutes a homage to the colors that defines his work. The contrast that marked the artist’s life, an artist who was as much at home in high society as with the most avant-garde set, produced inspirational parties which culminated in some of his best work. The Evening Collection pays homage to those moments of glamor and elegance that defined the nights of New York, marked by diversity and a mix of styles. A combination of bright colors is balanced by more natural tones. Red, fuchsia, emerald or yellow combine or join with black and white in fabrics such as lace, tulle and silk brocade in designs that highlight the waistline and play with hand embroideries, flounces or maribou feathers. Garments that maintain the mark of femininity and elegance that defines the brand, but using more fluid lines that are much more relaxed and casual.

Carolina Herrera

Metropolitan Insignia Clutch New York City has often served as the inspiration behind Carolina Herrera’s collections. It was there that her early work was exhibited in some of the city’s most iconic locations. The Plaza and the Pierre, Bryant Park, Lincoln Center, the MOMA and the Frick are just some of the venues chosen to present her designs; but none were as important for her career as the Metropolitan Club, where she presented her first twenty outfit collection in a private event in 1981. Metropolitan Insignia Clutch, part of the already quintessential Insignia collection, pays tribute to this milestone in Mrs. Herrera’s career. The clutch has a light, metallic structure wrapped in a version of the bracelet which started the entire Insignia project to commemorate the brand’s 35th anniversary. Different materials have gradually been added, inspired by details found in the club’s different rooms. The glossy version is a reference to the different colored crystal chandeliers, while the hand-painted silk model echoes the frescoes from the elegant salon and the embroidered version mirrors the intricate details featured on curtains and tapestry. The most striking version, however, is inspired by the balustrade of the main staircase. Crafted entirely by the same hands responsible for the embroidery on traditional Spanish bullfighting costumes, this piece stands out as the collection’s masterpiece. According to Carolina Herrera, “the first thing that makes a woman elegant is her individuality. It’s not about what you wear, but how you wear it”. Metropolitan Insignia Clutch will definitely be the perfect accessory to make you stand out from the crowd.

Coach

Coach Introduces “A Dark Fairy Tale” A Twisted Take on Classic Disney Tales Today, two American visionaries and global originals join forces for Disney x Coach: A Dark Fairy Tale. The special-edition collection subverts classic Disney Princess tales with a dark and romantic twist on Coach ready-to-wear and leather goods. Found and styled within the brand’s Pre-Fall 2018 collection, the pieces play with spooky undertones and the tension of nostalgic Disney animations to create a halo collection for the season inspired by an American gothic fairy tale of New York.

the talk - page 36

This collaboration re-contextualizes unexpected motifs from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty, think dark and dreamy castles, poisoned apples and wide-eyed woodland creatures, for a play to the edgier, darker side. Retro t-shirts with rock-and-roll fonts and a nostalgic color palette are styled with tough moto jackets, while Coach’s recognizable signature print is enhanced with darker graphics and bold leather detailing for an unexpected juxtaposition. The collection also showcases authentic Coach American sportswear, jersey hoodies, sneakers and fanny packs with Disney inspired patches and embellishments. In a nod to the storytellers of Disney, and the craftsmanship synonymous with Coach, a special story patch was made to commemorate the collection.

Wrist-y Business Walking along the beach or pier we see all these cute pop-ups and huts selling what we like to call ‘vacation bracelets’. You know someone has been to a beach destination when they come back tanned and with a stack of colorful beads and handmade bracelets mixed in with their gold locked bracelets. Wearing them at the beach (be very careful when it comes to tan lines) is a nice way to style up your beachwear. At night, with that gorgeous tan you can’t think of a better way to accessorize. The key to picking the perfect set is to mix and match different sets but stay within the same color theme. If you’re more into going all out with colors stick to the same design but in different colors. Stack ‘em up and take a hand selfie! PS: A gel manicure is a must pre-vacation.

Boucheron Quatre Sometimes all it takes is one glance at a creation and in an instant one is reminded of the excellence of its creation. Imbued with a unique something, the object becomes a signature. Such works, often precursory in style, shake up the fashion trends of the time and assert their character. Launched in 2004, the Maison Boucheron’s iconic Quatre ring is an interpretation of multifaceted and playful beauty, an instantly modern visionary style, a graphic link to elegance whose strength is as puzzling as it is appealing. Constantly reinventing itself, the Quatre ring never ceases to amaze. Decisively edgy. Definitively chic. As are those who choose to wear it. Their common denominator: being women and men of vision and conviction, people who assert their choice. Quatre is the ring of those who don’t play any other game than their own. Classique, White, Black or Radiant, the Quatre collection is being constantly enriched with new icons, for both men and women, to be worn separately or together, after all, each of the hand’s five fingers is entitled to its own Quatre ring.

These creations are a visible token of happiness, to be passed on from generation to generation as testimony to the happy moments when they were received as gifts. The Launch of New Portugieser Models IWC Schaffhausen is expanding its Portugieser family to include two classically elegant models. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer is launching the first Portugieser watch in the current collection to have a perpetual calendar and platinum case. Louis Moinet Skydance

As a prelude to a much-awaited announcement about ladies’ watches at BaselWorld, Louis Moinet has just unveiled the very first reinterpretation of its ladies’ watch, now dubbed the “Skydance”. At 6 o’clock the small seconds display features a sun with the rays pointing to the second, driven by an automatic calibre boasting a 42-hour power reserve. In the center sit the hours and minutes hands, with their dewdrop tips – one of Louis Moinet’s signature symbols – here filled with a luminous substance. The timepiece features two distinctive levels of diamonds: a first set of six on the bezel, and twelve more marking the hours on the dial. The Skydance case is a combination of titanium and engraved steel – a more recent Louis Moinet hallmark. “We’ve developed the engraving on our cases into an art form in its own right to adorn some of our finest limited editions. This is the first time that one of our ladies’ watches has featured these engravings on the case.” And in a final distinctive touch, each of the lugs to hold the strap is topped by a diamond – another first for Louis Moinet, and probably a first in watchmaking, too.

Oris

Source of Life Limited Edition The new watch is based on the stylish Oris Aquis diver’s watch, one of the independent Swiss company’s signature designs. In keeping with Oris’s philosophy to ‘Go your own way’, every model in the line combines innovation, highperformance and high-quality Swiss design and engineering with price points that make sense in the real world. The Oris Source of Life Limited Edition picks up on that theme, and also recognizes the role water plays in feeding, sustaining and connecting life. It focuses on the course of the River Rhine, chosen because it runs close to the village of Hölstein where Oris has been based since 1904, and because the Orisbach, a nearby brook from which the company takes its name, feeds into it. The watch’s case back is embossed with a map of the River Rhine, which runs 1,233km (766 miles) through six countries from its source at the Lai da Tuma, or Tomasee, a lake 2,343 meters up in the Swiss Alps in the canton of Graubünden, through to the North Sea. The river has been a source of life to those who live along it for centuries.

Ulysse Nardin

Classic Tourbillon Falcon Ulysse Nardin’s master watchmakers have created this exquisite timepiece drawing deeply on the inspiration of the desert heritage of the region as well as the muchloved tradition of falconry that has been held dear by the people. While the sport has drawn in both rulers and commoners, it was His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founding Father and first President of the UAE, whose love for the falcon saw him pioneer initiatives to preserve the bird and the sport for posterity, by putting in place far-sighted initiatives to conserve and protect the unique bird, which has seen the sport continue to this day. Equipped with the UN-178 Manufacture movement, the new Classic Tourbillon Falcon is adorned with a dial displaying a faithful reproduction of a falconry scene in the desert at sunrise. One can admire the quality of the details, produced by the dexterous hand of the master enameler. The miniature scale and the repeated firing necessary to create the vitreous enamel highlights the superior talent of the masters, who spend more than 50 hours making the gold “cloisons” or compartments that comprise the dial’s design. The CLASSIC Falcon Tourbillon provides a three-dimensional effect thanks to the thickness of the enamel layer. All the expertise of traditional watchmaking is incorporated into this exceptional 44 mm timepiece, featuring cloisonné enamel, flying tourbillon, silicon escapement and a power reserve of over 7 days. Each watch of this 8-piece collection in white gold is unique and enameled by hand. Ulysse Nardin remains one of the few manufacturers to master the enameling technique in-house and one of the first to have contributed to the revival of the striking mechanism.

Ulysse Nardin Beautiful Freaks

“Samurai” comes from the word “saburai,” which means to serve or stand by an important person. On the dial of the CLASSIC SAMOURAÏ, Ulysse Nardin’s craftsmen have used Japanese prints to recreate a famous sword duel between two legendary samurai, Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. Equipped with a rare automatic movement - one of the most sophisticated in mechanical watchmaking, the Hourstriker CLASSIC SAMOURAÏ rings on the hour on request but can also be programmed to ring on the hour and half-hour. Each time the hammer hits the gong, the Jaquemarts samurai simultaneously perform the spectacular duel between Musashi and Kojiro. On the left-hand side of the dial, recognizable by his two swords, one short and the other long, is Miyamoto Musashi, the most famous Japanese warrior of the 17th century, who fought more than sixty times in his life. The author of Gorin No Sho, a text on strategy featuring reflections on combat and the art of swordsmanship, he and his life were made popular through a famous novel and numerous films. On the right is Sasaki Kojiro, his long-standing rival, considered the best opponent that Musashi had ever faced and who died during the duel of 1612, portrayed here, on the island of Ganryu. Each release from this 18-piece collection in 18 carat rose gold or platinum is embellished with hand-sculpted Jaquemarts in rose gold or gray gold. the talk - page 65

Mido Commander Big Date

An exceptional timepiece to celebrate a big date To mark a century since it was founded and pay homage to the visionary spirit of its founder Georges Schaeren, Mido has developed an exclusive movement with a big date aperture based on its Calibre 80. Roger Dubuis

Excalibur Knights of the Round Table III With the Excalibur Knights of the Round Table III hyperwatch, Roger Dubuis once again demonstrates the power of the sword. This forceful new interpretation of the legend of King Arthur’s Excalibur is inspired by the fabled island of Avalon, regarded as the place where the mighty sword was forged. In a radical combination of disruptive materials, extreme craftsmanship and sophisticated horological complications, state-of-the-art pink gold low poly-sculpted knights gather around a dramatic blue enamel table. Commanding, compelling and cunningly creative, Excalibur is the ultimate symbol of the inherent daring embedded in the Roger Dubuis DNA. An inventive boldness expressed as much through the use of unprecedented materials in watchmaking as through the consistent launch of groundbreaking new calibres. The cut and thrust of innovation and vanguard technologies hold no secrets for the full-fledged Manufacture with its dedicated in-house R&D department. After the glorious campaigns of its Excalibur Knights of the Round Table I and II, Roger Dubuis once again proves its ability to upend conventions and conquer traditions by offering a cutting-edge, contemporary take on watchmaking icons. Vigorous, valiant and virile, each highly detailed, low poly-sculpted, engraved and hand-finished knight has been entirely redesigned; each points his sword at the Avalon-inspired table sculpted from solid blue enamel blocks, a process requiring considerable dexterity and many patient hours of craftsmanship. Framed by an imposing Excalibur 45mm case with a solid caseback, fluted 18K pink gold bezel and matching crown, each dial takes a full 45 hours to create. This mechanical marvel is teamed with a matching blue alligator strap. the talk - page 70

Louis Moinet

Islamic Collection Louis Moinet has produced a set of five artistic watches, each a unique piece, designed to show off the artistic beauty of the Arab world by depicting its most beautiful Mosques. The “Islamic Collection” features the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat, Al-Masjid An-Nabawi in Medina, Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca, Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa in Al-Quds, and Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. The tourbillon adds movement to the piece, but it is the dial that really captures the viewer’s attention. The Mosque shines in all its glory – hand-painted on the purest mother-of-pearl. A miniaturist provided her own unique touch to bring her creation to life. Her special technique, calling for long, painstaking hours of work, makes the successive coats of paint appear particularly light; the resulting artistic, artisanal masterpiece is without parallel. To crown it all, special luminous material has been inserted into the Dome and base of the Mosque to light it up at night. The white gold case has been set with 56 best quality baguette diamonds. The price of this timepiece, redolent with heritage value, has been set at CHF 825,500.00. the talk - page 73

SPF, Who? Throughout the year we’re all careful with our fancy skincare routines, continuously checking our pore size, making sure they don’t get too big. However, as soon as we get to the beach it’s like “goodbye SPF, hello UV rays.” We’re all dying to get a tan, we forget that the point of sunblock isn’t to stop you from tanning, it’s to protect your skin from harmful rays. We’re not going to scare you (although we suggest you search about the effects of tanning on the skin) but your skin will age faster if you increase sun exposure. Do we listen to all these pieces of advice? Of course not, we want a tan! So let’s at least minimize the damage. First, use sunblock with a high SPF, do not depend on the protection that is already in your tanning oil, and do attempt to re-apply if you are going to be out in the sun for over 3 hours. Second, stay hydrated – drink water, water and more water, and stay moisturized. Lastly, after your vacation do opt for a cleansing facial that will rid your skin of some of the toxins that are harmful to your skin.

Splitting Up: Beach Edition Humidity, chlorine, heat…! Omg, my poor bleached hair. Whether your hair is dyed or not, protecting it while being in the water isn’t something everyone takes note of. However, when you have to get your hair trimmed after your vacation and you see frizz everywhere, you know you definitely should have thought of that. But how can we protect our hair? Here’s how: Before diving in the pool or heading to the sea, take a shower! Just wet your hair fully to avoid any chlorine or salt water penetrating into the hair. After that, apply a leave in conditioner or mask formulated for this purpose. During your time outside, keep an anti-frizz humidity spray by your side just in case your hair decides to act out. After you’re done, shampoo and condition your hair immediately and apply a rich serum. This is the best way to keep your hair healthy and squeaky clean.

Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Incenso

Blending notes of Oriental perfumery with the finest Italian ingredients, Dolce&Gabbana Velvet Collection celebrates the unique history of Arab Sicily with a new selection of oriental blends. The journey began with Tender Oud and Desert Oud. It continued with Amber Skin and Amber Sun. Today, with Velvet Incenso the collection offers a modern interpretation of the most ancient and mystical ingredient of perfumery: incense. A dark, mysterious veil fluttering over honey-hued stones in the Mediterranean light. Fragrant smoke blending with the plumes rising from the majestic Mount Etna. For centuries, volutes of burning incense have risen from the palaces of Sicily. In Velvet Incenso, the perfumers CĂŠcile Matton and Julie MassĂŠ turn the complex facets of the age-old ingredient, also known as olibanum, into a glittering mosaic of sizzling resins. Vibrant incense essence is set alight by a spark of black pepper essence, obtained from a cutting-edge extraction that preserves the aroma of a freshly crunched peppercorn. With its citrus and pepper facets, elemi essence echoes these opening notes, its resinous burn introducing the darker heart of the fragrance.

Royale Hayat Hospital

Dr. Islam Moussa Dr. Islam Moussa, a well renowned plastic surgeon at the Royale Hayat Hospital, shares his viewpoint on plastic surgery. Dr. Islam attained his Degree in Medicine from The University of Alexandria, and soon after a Master’s Degree from Cairo, Egypt, in 2009. He went on to acquire another Master’s Degree from Spain in the year 2014. Dr. Islam has had extensive training in his field in Belgium as well as in Finland, and has been a part of the Royale Hayat team since 2010, completing 8 years this September. From Botox, PRP, laser, to further invasive procedures, these are only some that Dr. Islam oversees and performs at the Royale Hayat.

the talk - page 92

Tell us about the different procedures you perform here at Royale Hayat. I’m part of the plastic surgical team here at Royale Hayat. Our job is to prep the patient for surgery, the surgical procedure itself, and lastly the follow-up after the surgery. What are the common problems you notice in our region, and how can they be solved? One of major issues that has caused many complications are the materials and substances that are not FDA approved that were being used. We have noticed a decrease with this particular issue nowadays, but we still encounter cases with complications, as these materials can cause lifelong issues. Patients who had undergone procedures even as long back as 2011-2012, are still facing problems. Sometimes we can solve it, other times there is no treatment. Tell us more about the newest machines such as HiFu, Thermage, and Fraxel. In the beginning, the machines were used to deal with the skin itself. Fraxel improves the color, quality, and texture of the skin. Thermage deals with the deeper layer of skin. It is a machine that can help tighten the skin, the radiofrequency tightens the tissues underneath and helps produce new collagen, and one can see really good results within a year. Then comes the HiFu, and that stimulates the tissue underneath the skin. It is a sort of focused ultrasound that affects even the muscles under the skin. After a few sessions you can see good improvement. It is not a replacement for facelift, but at times it is a good option for a patient who does not need a facelift. PRP has been very common in this region. What is it mainly for and who are the best candidates for it? Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) was not used for cosmetic purposes at first. It was used by orthopedic surgeons, and cardiac surgeons. The idea was then taken on by the cosmetic practices. If you use PRP for the skin, it can improve the texture of the skin and build up more collagen. For the hair, it can stimulate the hair follicles to improve hair texture and reduce hair loss. Surgery isn’t always the first solution as there are less invasive solutions. Describe how non-surgical nose and face reshaping can be achieved? Generally, surgery isn’t always the first option. However, sometimes you just can’t replace surgery with something

Position: Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Department: Cosmetic Center Qualifications: European Boards of Microsurgery. Stem Cell rich plasma (PRP). Fillers & Botox. Laser Hair removal. Laser for skin tightening & Rejuvenation. Botox treatment for excessive sweating for under arms & hands. Non-Surgical nose reduction & cheek enlargement. Hand rejuvenation

else. For the nose, the best option is surgery for expected long-lasting results. We can lift the nose a bit or make a bump less obvious with fillers and Botox; best decided depending on what the patient needs. For the face nonsurgical procedures are available and very safe such as the machines we mentioned earlier, fillers, and Botox. Another option is also fat transfer for the face, instead of using other materials. The truth about Botox and fillers. Some say it’s the worst, some say how did they ever live without it. What are the common mistakes that make up these assumptions? In my opinion, fillers and Botox are amazing tools we have in our hands – if it is used the right way. Using the right material, having the procedure done by an experienced and trained professional, and also the reasonable amount. You don’t want to change the face completely using excessive fillers, it is not 100% natural. You can use it to achieve perfect cheeks or maybe replace some of the volume that has been lost with weight loss or age. Botox is also a good tool for dynamic wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. It can also be used to reduce excessive sweating in the hands and underarms. the talk - page 93

Vitamin C: Do You Really Need it Yes of course you need it, don’t be silly! But you don’t have do drink a gallon of orange juice every day like grandma forces you to. There are a lot of ways to get your daily dose of vitamin C. Aside from oranges, grapefruit, and basically all the citrus fruits and fruit juices, there are a number of vegetables such as broccoli that also contain this vitamin. A vitamin C deficiency is something you really do not want to deal with. From lack of energy, to a decreased immune system, and these are just the basic side effects. If you’re not a fan of foods containing it, might as well take it as a supplement. Our body loves vitamin C, and so does our skin. Vitamin C injections are very popular for face rejuvenation and radiance. To mention something less invasive, serums and lotions containing vitamin C tend to give your skin radiance and brighten up dull skin. It also, over time, get’s rid of dark spots and blemishes. Manolo Valdés

Temporary residency at La Réserve Genève A globally renowned and acclaimed talent, Manolo Valdés is a multidisciplinary artist who declares himself “a consumer of art and its history”. Born in Valence in 1942, the Spanish artist now lives and works in New York. Since the 1960s, he has been exploring an intensely personal vision of the use of shapes, materials, colors through his paintings and sculptures. After a period spent as part of the Equipo Crónica movement during his early career, his personal creative path led him to revisit the history of art in his own way, influenced by the great masters such as Velasquez, Picasso and Matisse. His works have found their way into the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, as well as Berlin’s Kunstmuseum and the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Six Manolo Valdés sculptures have found their place both on the grounds and inside La Réserve Genève. Three monumental works can be admired during an outdoor stroll beneath the centuries-old trees and near the hotel swimming pool – a natural setting entirely in tune with the inspiration of the artist, who once again evokes the feminine figure through a plant life reinterpretation of the portrait theme. The stylized foliage and the materials used ensure an ideal match between the works and their environment, staging emotional face-to-face encounters with visitors. Inside, three other sculptures interpret the same theme in more standard sizes, through a magnificent pairing of materials: metal and alabaster. The first, located near the fireplace, welcomes guests upon their arrival. The second stands in the spot usually occupied by the iconic elephant in the La Réserve lobby, while the third has opted for the more intimate setting of the Café Lauren. This exhibition of sculptures by Manolo Valdés, in a place entirely suited to their nature and stature, admirably complements the simultaneous showing of paintings by the artist at the Opera Gallery in downtown Geneva. This internationally renowned modern and contemporary art gallery founded in 1994 offers a permanent exhibition of works by modern and contemporary artists such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder and Pierre Soulages, as well as personal, collective and themed exhibitions.

An educational path starting with her studies in Dietetics and Nutrition at the Florida International University in Miami, graduating in 2007, completing the coursework in 3 years; followed by a 9-month internship program at several hospitals such as Cedars Sinai, Baptist Hospital, Miami Children’s Hospital, and The Palace Nursing Home, enabling Dana to take the Registered Dietitian Certification required to work in the US. Dana was one of the first few dietitians in Kuwait back then (2007) to attain this certification. Grad school soon followed at one of the top merit universities, University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign. “Moving from Miami to a small college town in Illinois was something I clearly did not think through! Major culture shock” Dana tells us, but she did it! She obtained her MS in Nutritional Sciences and a concentration in Neurocognition in the year 2009. Her thesis was based on the foodbrain connection, on how healthy food in children aged 8-10 years affected their brain cognition, accuracy and precision in academics. Dana’s career journey was equally expansive; she decided to join Al Yasra Food’s Organic Food Division as the Assistant Regional Manager and Company Dietitian, once she moved back to Kuwait in mid2009. She had also accepted another job offer, to teach HFIT 101 at the American University of Kuwait as an Adjunct Professor, discovering that she had a natural knack for teaching. A year-long break followed 2 years at AUK and 5 years Al Yasra. As we continue exploring her career journey, Dana tells us, “Education is such a powerful weapon. So when I was offered a job as a Program Manager at INJAZ, I took the opportunity even though it was not related to nutrition at all.” Her first passion and true love for ‘nutrition’ soon advanced her to focus back on it and Dana moved on to join the NATBASMA team, where she currently provides virtual nutrition services to everyone around the world. Why did you choose nutrition? I did not initially. I wanted to be a doctor. My parents did not want me spending many years of my life studying away, so, I luckily opted for nutrition. What are the common mistakes you see in the region when it comes to nutrition? The one-diet-fits-all approach. My pet peeve is when a dietitian provides the same “diet” printed on a piece of paper to every single client. I do not like the word “diet” to begin with. I believe in a wholesome healthy lifestyle approach. Changing your food alone is not the solution to a healthy lifestyle. We need to educate our clients to understand that food is only one piece of the healthy lifestyle formula. Other factors such as exercise, stress, sleep, mindset, and many other factors are as important to reaching your health goals. Why do you think Kuwait is one of the top 10 countries when it comes to obesity, and how can we solve this issue? Inactivity being the major culprit! There is no excuse whatsoever to be inactive. The simplest solution would be to walk 10,000 steps a day! Take the stairs at work. Park a little farther to walk to your destination. Walk around the mall to get those extra steps in. Or just head to the gym! There’s a new gym opening up around every corner in Kuwait offering a wide range of prices and services. Simply no excuse. Also, lack of dietary education - I say this because when I talk to my clients, they are truly unaware of what they are eating. A large part of what I provide is nutrition education to all my clients around the GCC. the talk - page 110

When it comes to prenatal and postnatal nutrition, what are the common mistakes women in our region make, and what would you advise them? Women around the GCC primarily make three mistakes. 1) They overeat and gain a lot of weight while pregnant. 2) They do not exercise while pregnant. 3) They also wait too long to exercise post pregnancy. During the first trimester of a pregnancy, a mother should not increase her caloric intake at all! However, the minute she hears she’s with child, she increases her food tremendously! We go back to lack of education. It plays a major role here as well. The same with prenatal and postnatal exercise workouts. There is a misconception that prenatal exercise will hurt the baby rather than benefit mother and baby. I am happy to notice an increase in expectant-mothers attending prenatal classes nowadays as opposed to a few years ago. Also, mothers tend wait too long to get back into exercising post-delivery. It is usually safe to start easing into your workouts 4-6 weeks post-delivery, with your doctor’s approval. In the households, what can parents do to train their children to make better choices? First, be a healthy role model. I cannot emphasize this enough. Children mirror everything their parents do, good and bad. Research has shown when a household has one, if not both, parents practicing healthy habits, it is more likely that their children will practice those same habits as well. Second, provide only healthy food and snack options at home. When a child is hungry, they will eat what they see. If they see fruits and veggies, they will eat just that. Start early and you will not have to face lack of love for fruits and veggies. In this region we are thankful to have a lot of resources and people to guide us through our health and nutrition journey. However, sometimes having too many opinions, at times conflicting ones, can take us back to square one. What are your thoughts on this issue? Nutrition is a fairly new science. New research is constantly emerging on all kinds of nutrition related topics. What I studied back in university is not all relevant nowadays. They taught us that saturated fats are bad for you and should be kept to a minimum, however, new research has proved otherwise. With the spread of social media and the rise of individuals declaring themselves dietitians/ nutritionists, I advise everyone to stay up to date on their nutrition information and resources with evidence-based research from reliable sources – nutritionists, websites, etc. Tell us about your personal nutrition regime. Do you follow something specific or is it just about making the right choices? I am currently following a Gluten Free, Sugar Free regime. I find that gluten and sugar trigger my migraines. Since cutting them out in January, my migraines are almost non-existent! Alhamdulillah. I also eat more protein than carbohydrates because I find that my body likes that better. It is key to listen to your body and understand what it needs. Every person has different nutritional needs and what works for me might not work for you. As our readers (and us) are prepping for summer-ready bodies, what piece of advice can you offer to guide us through? Balance. Balance. Balance. It’s okay to indulge in delicious foods every now and then. You only live once so why not enjoy it! But that does not mean go crazy. If you indulge today, balance tomorrow; walk and exercise more. What I do is if I eat, for example, dessert today, I’ll eat super clean the next day and add 2,000 steps to my daily 10,000 steps. the talk - page 113
