the talk - page 17

letter/ Dear readers, We’re back! Tanned skin and strutting with confidence, that’s how we feel now that we are back from our summer vacations, and we are so ready to dive right back in. September marks the renewed energy that we witness on runways and catwalks, hues of our favorite colors gone bolder and wilder as fall fashion approaches and the latest collections drop on us with full force. In this issue, we walk you slowly through the Fall/Winter 2019 collections starting with the top trends, some gothic florals with a side of purple. Moving right along to beauty, it’s all about boldness and color when it comes to hair and makeup. Speaking of boldness, we had a get together with the founder of K7L Cosmetics who went indepth on her struggles finding her passion and how it turned into a success. She tells us that no matter how many bumps on the road to victory, hard work will pay off. Jewelry is a beautiful aspect of every girl’s wardrobe and family history as well. This month we’re going all modern, even though some of the trends date back to... well… BC! Diamond hoops and diamond chokers are all the rave right now. As with every trend, there is a special piece for everyone, depending on your taste. No matter your fashion taste or preference, one thing is for sure - this month is all about renewals and restarts. Immerse yourselves in the colorful spread that awaits you and inject that energy into the days that follow. That’s it for September, the month of fashion and personal indulgence. Till next time, the talk Team

Dolce & Gabbana Fall/Winter 2019

The extravaganza that featured 127 looks did the latest Fall/Winter collection justice. The runway show unspooled against a backdrop that was draped in red velvet material with an announcer on the side in a tuxedo talking about the collection and the details including the various inspirations behind the pieces as the show went on. Pastel silk dressing gowns inspired by marzipan and pistachios and printed and embroidered florals; the pieces also symbolized art by Leonardo, Raphael, and Botticelli with a touch of surrealist art.

Bottega Veneta Fall 2019 Campaign

The Fall 2019 advertising campaign expands the new universe of Bottega Veneta, defined by Creative Director Daniel Lee, shot by photographer Tyrone Lebon in Los Angeles. A stark sun-bleached concrete basin in Joshua Tree, California; with eternal blue sky and broad horizons, warmth, and sensuality, set the scene for endless possibilities.

the talk - page 24

A fast car in pure gold is up-ended, as power is subverted, and these images offer a new vantage on the traditional status of luxury itself. Post-modern symbols of status, glamour, and reflection set off the graphic silhouettes of the Fall 2019 collection; this campaign captures a new vision of a modern, unapologetic luxury. Juxtaposed subversion finds reflections in the clothes. The inherent codes of elevation, desire, and sensual identity, the raw contrast of man versus machine, remains at the core of the images that reference the collection in line, cut, construction. Fall 2019 is clean, precise, and polished. This Bottega Veneta looks from a different angle. Look with new eyes. Discover a fresh point of view. “Strength, sensuality, being in the moment. Bottega Veneta is about defining a point of view, a new way of seeing subtle individuality, and then subverting that status, says Daniel Lee.

Saint Laurent Fall/Winter 2019

The latest Fall/Winter collection is exactly what we need after months of lounging in our beachwear. This collection is one to indulge in. For starters, the sharp and couture-refined tailoring gives Anthony Vaccarello’s silhouettes a distinct and graphic elegance. Also, sculptural lines inspired by the eighties recall the sophisticated and liberated spirit of Betty Catroux, Bianca Jagger, and Catherine Deneuve – the iconic muses of the house of Saint Laurent.

the talk - page 26

Following the strict geometry, the opium myth of red and gold embroideries turns into new dynamic shapes in precious materials. For the finale, in a mirrored kaleidoscopic setting, a black light unveils the contemporary, effortless aspect of Saint Laurent’s soul. the talk - page 27

LANVIN Fall/Winter 2019 “MYSTIC PILGRIMS” The 13th century Musée de Cluny plays host to the first women’s collection designed by Bruno Sialelli for the house of Lanvin, sublimating the illustrious heritage of the Parisian Maison in the midst of its own renaissance. As the first true purveyor of lifestyle, Lanvin encompasses a prismatic vision of fashion. Contemplating the life and times of its founder Jeanne Lanvin, a vital optimism permeates this respectful evolution – acknowledging the Maison as a florilegium of creative energy. Embodying a folkloric spirit, the Fall/Winter 2019 collection roams from the Rue Saint-Honoré to Brest and far beyond, reminiscing upon cinematic and literary personas through history. the talk - page 32

Passing from myths to modern fairy-tales, graphics flit from Paul Iribe’s logo La femme et L’Enfant (1924) on stamped muslin to mosaic monogram pajama silks and delicate marguerite micro-florals. Evoking the whimsy of Cécile and Jean de Brunhoff’s Babar the Elephant books, illustrated scenes float over crewneck twinsets and foulard riding boots, while tufted hares and foxes frolic across transparent tulle. Sensuous and in perfect symmetry, shaped necks and contoured sleeves impart blouses or dresses with a medieval line, as the scrolling imprint of illuminated manuscripts is writ large across silk twill. Faded Merovingian splendor is woven throughout, from gilded leather amulets and dipped thimble rings to St. George’s dragon resplendent on embroidered velvet. Voluminous kaftan gowns trail with linings inside and out, layered with bands of lace, pleated satin, and portrait print georgette. Lanvin’s muse is embellished with abandon, adorned from head to toe with heraldic charm jewelry and porcelain chokers, fruit minaudières and Salome wedges in Viennese metalwork. Grounding the season’s mystic vision, satchels, flat totes and asymmetric bucket bags are crafted in supple suede, canvas and calfskin to match fringed tennis shoes, studded clogs, and molded moccasin boots. the talk - page 33

Salvatore Ferragamo The bold new community of shoes that reflects the world we live in Salvatore Ferragamo presents Refracted: a striking new suite of Fall/Winter 2019 shoes whose uniting feature reflects the rich diversity of the world we live in today. This innovative heel shape comes in three heights and is constructed from a highly durable yet ultralight plastic which is then coated with a high-tensile galvanized metallic shell. The heel’s shape is a laser-carved topography of irregular triangular facets: combined with that metallic finish, these create an interaction with the shoe and the world around it through unpredictable refractions of light. The first drop of Refracted shoes features five styles in a wide range of colorways and fabrications – Nappa, suede, patent leather, silk satin with crystal embroideries. These will become the foundation of an increasingly vibrant and various selection of footwear featuring this bold new signature heel.

ksubi Fall 2019: Sign of the Times Australian denim and streetwear label ksubi has joined forces with world-renowned supermodel Kendall Jenner to launch ksubi’s Fall 2019 collection Sign of the Times. The partnership proved instantly organic as Jenner remains an avowed ksubi evangelist often spotted in flagship products from the brand. “I’ve always been an admirer of ksubi’s style and vision, and I was so excited when they reached out to me,” said Jenner. “I can’t wait for the collection to drop in July.” The line endeavors to tap into throwback noughties style with detailed silhouettes and vintage inspiration, while embracing stark streetwear sex appeal. The strippedback beaten black style speaks to an edge shared by both Jenner and the brand. ksubi C.E.O. & C.D. Craig King added, “If you were to look at any one of our last few seasonal mood boards, you’d find a disproportionate number of shots of Kendall. She’s a key muse for ksubi. Her simple off-duty L.A. style is very reflective of Sydney’s street vibes. It’s not often you get to work with your long-distance muse, so when the chance came around, we obviously jumped at it.” The Fall 2019 collection includes jeans, jackets, a tee, hooded sweater, and shorts. the talk - page 37

Tory Burch Collection A bit about Fall/Winter 2019 Silhouettes: Fall/Winter 2019 reflects an effortless modernity with uncomplicated, relaxed silhouettes. Polished pieces: tailored trousers, structured loden coats, and classic blazers, balance billowy shapes. There is a refined magpie approach to layering, sporty parkas draped over evening gowns, a striped slip under a gauzy shirtdress‌ Palette: Rooted in muted neutrals: crisp white, black, and the brand’s signature navy, the collection is warmed up with earthy, autumnal hues of umber brown, deep red and cayenne. Pops of vibrant color: bright yellow and green inject energy. Prints & Patterns: Bold stripes, vivid paisleys, and feminine florals play off one another to unexpected effect. A collage print blends archival photography and whimsical illustration. Fabrications: Herringbones and checks are coolly classic while crochet patches convey an understated nostalgia. Fluid ruffles and a print-on-pleat technique bring movement and dimension. Sequins and square-shaped palettes add a rich luster. Deliberately unfinished embroideries are raw and imperfect, nodding to technical artistry of Anni Albers, a central figure at Black Mountain.

Purple Reign Fashion week has definitely given us a clue of what the colors of the upcoming seasons are going to be. But currently, we’re obsessing over purple, and it’s literally pouring on the runways. The shades of purple we’re seeing really are unique - it’s not too dark and not too light. Actually, we’re seeing all shades on the runway! It blends perfectly with the blue hues on the runways as well. Dries Von Noten’s loose silk dresses are perfect to be worn under the coats or even by themselves on those days where the weather is unpredictable. Pair your purple dress with a pair of beige boots for an edgy look or a pair of silver slingbacks for a night out. Keep makeup minimal, but on those days where you feel like you need a lift, wing that black liner! the talk - page 44

Fall Florals “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking!” Hah! We got you here, Miranda Priestly. This fall, we see our spring favorite in a different feel. A darker approach to these prints - visible on the runways, inspired by the weather at the time. This romantic, feel-good trend is one that we can’t get over. From Rodarte to Valentino, to, of course, Erdem, these dark fall-inspired floral prints are the pieces to score this season. Real-flower inspirations at Prada have us feeling some kind of way, while McQueen showed us that bringing back the 90s was definitely a good idea fashion-wise. the talk - page 45

Boucheron

PARIS, VU DU 26 It’s not a walk. Much less a stroll. Inspired by Paris, by its architecture and culture, Boucheron’s new high jewelry collection explores viewpoints, perspectives, and heights. Some pieces rise to breathtaking heights in a reflection of the vast capital, such as this set designed like the image of the Grand Palais seen from above. Other pieces have their feet firmly on the ground, as they capture and sublimate a light, shape or adornment. The cobblestones of Place Vendôme, for example, are depicted in a pattern of precious stones, which is, at the same time, spectacular and quotidian, familiar but disconcerting. Above all, this is 26 Place Vendôme, the heart of the Maison Boucheron, actually inspiring the creation of a gemstone as surreal as it is self-evident, utterly inexplicable yet crystal clear. Just like Paris, in fact.

the talk - page 50

After a few months of the opening of the newly renovated Boucheron Family House at 26 Place Vendôme, the new High Jewelry collection arrived as if to complete the building, like the last stone, highlighting both the history of the Maison and its desire to innovate. The collection celebrates the Parisian roots of the Maison Boucheron by offering a new perspective on the city. As in a dream, or a fantasy, the city is transformed, rid of its clichés, idealized by the finer points of High Jewelry. The cobblestones of Place Vendôme become a subtle pattern of stones, while a column is changed into a pearl tassel, skillfully articulated to be both rigid and fluid. This new High Jewelry collection is familiar and dreamlike at the same time. It is recognizable but different, Parisian but universal, with flexibility and femininity shining through its innovation. After two and a half years of research, it even reveals the very first gemstone invented by the Maison Boucheron. Encompassing history and innovation, reflecting Paris and elsewhere, this new High Jewelry collection is the ultimate proof of Boucheron’s desire to create freely. So that women can wear the jewelry exactly as they wish. the talk - page 51

Chaumet

Les Ciels de Chaumet From inspired creativity to jewelry virtuosity, from harmony of composition to its palette of colored stones, Chaumet has consistently expressed its connection to the arts. In 2019, the High Jewelry Collection Les Ciels de Chaumet celebrates this centennial and fruitful dialogue through an undeniably pictorial and poetic theme. From solar disks adorning the frescoes of ancient Egypt to contemporary installations and abstract skies; from the wading birds in Japanese prints to the birds of Picasso and Matisse; from Van Gogh’s swirling suns to Turner’s atmospheric skies, to Nerval’s “own star” and Mallarmé’s “winter sun”, the sky in all its states has long inspired the most beautiful creations. Like the great masters, Chaumet transforms its perception of vastness and its association with nature into exceptional pieces, giving shape and brilliance to sensations.

the talk - page 54

From the 19th century, Chaumet has been creating jewels inspired by the celestial vault, illuminating the beauty of women, transforming their presence into an apparition. Tiaras, head jewelry, brooches, bodice ornaments, necklaces, and pendant earrings testify to this creative passion, rich in observation, invention, and powerful symbolism. With their glittering elegance, stars, radiant suns, crescent moons, and planets surround a graceful gathering of birds, inhabitants of the air. A multitude of motifs masterfully reinterpreted to celebrate the modernity of femininity in the firmament. Rich in this luminous tradition, the Maison reinvents the sky’s many moods and the passage of time through four tableaux. Les Fulgurances du Ciel evokes the stars’ spectral nighttime journey, while Les Couleurs du Ciel portrays a sun radiant with light or tinted with nocturnal nuances. Capturing the magic of a moment, Les Caprices du Ciel celebrates the delicacy of clouds and the power of lightning. Lastly, the rare birds of Les Habitants du Ciel bring the energy of their flight and the elegance of their silhouette to the Chaumet natural world. the talk - page 55

Diamond Chokers Now that’s a trend we should have seen coming. We saw the black velvet choker trend evolve, so why not diamonds? They’ve been there forever. Royalty, the revered Queen Victoria, have worn the most exquisite diamond chokers. Nowadays, our options vary from small diamond drops to smaller pieces for a more “casual” take. You can wear it from day into the evening without looking like you stole the queen’s jewelry. Play around with stones such as sapphires and emeralds. Have multiple closures on the choker so you can adjust the length according to what you’re wearing. Pile on the necklaces under if you want to go all out, or just add a diamond underneath for an elegant look. Trust us, this look is something you can rock no matter your style or preference.

A Guide to Wearing Diamond Hoops Hoop earrings can be traced to Africa, dating back to ancient Nubia, a civilization traced to the middle stone age, into the Dynastic Era of Egypt, and is currently in Sudan. Just a little bit of history for those who think that hoops aren’t classy… Nowadays, they are a growing trend, whether it’s an accessory or a piece of fine jewelry. Picking the perfect pair for you is important as it should complement your face and features. There are different sizes, small hoops (huggies) are usually worn as daily use earrings. Medium-sized hoops add chic and sophistication to your look. Large hoops are for those of you who want to turn heads and make a strong impression for a fancy night out, of course, as usual, we recommend those ones, everyone knows that we do love to go all out!

321 IS BACK!

Omega’s Lunar LegendPowers The Latest Moonwatch Introducing the Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum The anticipation is finally over! Earlier this year, the Swiss watchmaker OMEGA announced the long-awaited return of its iconic Calibre 321. Today, on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, the brand is proud to unveil the first new Speedmaster Moonwatch to house the movement. Known for its beautifully intricate design, the original Calibre 321 was the first movement ever used in the OMEGA Speedmaster in 1957. Most famously, it was used in a variety of space-bound models including the Speedmaster ST 105.003 (the model tested and qualified by NASA and worn by astronaut Ed White during the first American spacewalk) and the Speedmaster ST 105.012 (the first watch worn on the moon on the 21st of July, 1969). After extensive research and reconstruction in a dedicated workshop, the Calibre 321 has now been reborn in-line with its original specifications. To view the reconstructed movement, customers will be able to look through the sapphire-crystal caseback of the new Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 Platinum. As the name suggests, the chronograph features a 42 mm brushed and polished case crafted from a special platinum alloy with the use of gold (Pt950Au20). The case design is inspired by the asymmetrical 4th generation Speedmaster case with twisted lugs (ST 105.012), and is presented on a black leather strap with a platinum buckle. Furthermore, this exciting timepiece includes a black ceramic bezel with the Speedmaster’s famous tachymeter scale in white enamel. Of course, there are plenty of other captivating features to explore too. The step dial is formed from onyx, with a deep black colour that works in perfect harmony with the other materials, including 18K white gold for the indexes and hands (except for the central chronograph seconds hand). Another very notable feature of the new timepiece is the three meteorite subdials. In tribute to the Speedmaster’s lunar history, OMEGA has used real slices of moon meteorite, providing a genuine link to the Calibre 321, which has powered every Speedmaster ever worn on the moon. For fans wishing to own a genuine piece of Moonwatch history, as well as a genuine piece of the moon itself, this chronograph should be high on their wish list. the talk - page 63

Areej Sultan Al Essa Beauty with a Purpose

Areej Sultan Al Essa graduated from Kuwait University with a major in English Literature. At the time, It was the only major taught in English, and Areej admits that she was not motivated to study; her educational desires revolved around criminology and sociology, but it was not available as an option, and hence she found her college experience somehow dull. Postuniversity, Areej got married and moved to Boston with her ex-husband because he wanted to pursue his masters. Areej jokingly mentions that her aim at that time was to be a housewife; for the first semester, she just stayed home and leisured out all day.

Areej was only 23, and she had witnessed the latest technologies and methods that could help people. Unfortunately, she couldn’t help and apply what she learnt at school due to social obstacles causing unacceptance towards advanced methods of treatments. Soon after, she quit.

Areej expresses that she yearned for something more to life! She came across a brochure for a master’s program in Criminal Justice/Substance Abuse Policy and Treatment. 1998 was a year that we had just started to learn about the drug issue in Kuwait, leading to deaths being caused by drug overdose. This was something Areej felt extremely passionate about, and she dove right in to explore and study. She completed the program; she described this period as the best two years of her life. The experiences during her internships and years of studying gave her a new perspective on life. She had found something of interest and something that could make a difference. When she moved back to Kuwait, she worked at the addiction center at Kuwait Psychological Medicine Hospital.

What lead to the idea of K7L Cosmetics? Every time I went to a different salon, the same skin and hair products were used every single time - it was boring and repetitive. That’s when, in 2005, I decided to start a distribution company ‘Beautylicious,’ after approaching several outlets online, and every time I contacted a company, they would send me a huge box of products to try, products that I loved! The idea just popped in my head, and I went with it; it wasn’t about the products or the money even, I just wanted to succeed in something. Beautylicious distributes beauty brands such as Image Skincare, Alterna Haircare, Oribe, Real Techniques, and Zoya across the Middle East.

She yet again stayed at home (rescuing cats - we’ll get into that later), Areej found it challenging to find something she was passionate about. It is at that time in her life, she began frequenting beauty salons every 2 or 3 days, and this was when Areej stumbled into the beauty industry.

When I proceeded to approach makeup brands in 2009, it just didn’t happen, it wasn’t meant to be. I decided it was time that we needed a brand that is a good fit for our Middle Eastern skin and weather. This would give light to K7L Cosmetics (K7L being a name inspired by the Arabic word Kohl). I worked relentlessly with factories and chemists to produce the products from scratch, to customize them to our specific needs. In 2014, we were ready to launch our 250 products! We had both an online platform and a physical store. We currently have over 500 products, eight different price point locations in Kuwait, we are opening another five. Also, five locations in Dubai and opening another eight. In Saudi Arabia, we are opening 10 locations. What should we expect from K7L Cosmetics in the future? We are getting ready to launch amazing products this fall, products I am personally proud of. It comes down to the most minute details such as the bristles on the brushes; we never use real hair here at K7L Cosmetics, we are all about cruelty-free! Tell us about your own everyday skincare routine, we’re intrigued! I am a young 43-year-old. I use antiaging clinical skincare because unlike over-the-counter products, which basically touch the epidermis layer, the clinical skincare reaches the dermis layer of your skin. It’s the kind

the talk - page 74

of skincare that, if used the wrong way, can harm your skin instead of treating it, so you have to be cautious. I recommend as early as the age of 27, one should begin to use clinical skincare as a preventative habit, and to maybe delay the aging process. I use a cleanser, serum, and sunblock for sure. This routine does wonder for my skin. Apart from taking over the beauty industry, what do you like to do in your free time? [After breaking into laughter], I did not take over the beauty industry, but I’m definitely a part of it, and I’m delighted with that. I’m a mommy for 10 cats and a 4-year-old human daughter, I also feed 20-50 street cats every day. I like to read. I love to travel, but I don’t do it as much since I’m scared of flying! From the onset, K7L Cosmetics got a very positive reaction, and we continuously see growth. What would you advise young girls when it comes to starting their journey? Firstly, choose something you are truly passionate about; once you’re passionate about something, it stops being a job, you don’t feel like you are going to work. Also, conducting extensive research is essential, a lot of thinking, a lot of determination, a lot of love. Enjoy it, enjoy learning, and enjoy making mistakes, it teaches you a lot! Be cautious, yes, but also love the process.

It glides forward boldly and smoothly with an undeniably modern and Parisian allure. Terribly on-trend, its radiance wavers between shadow and light. It is La Petite Robe Noire Velours. The most sophisticated Petite Robe Noire of the wardrobe decks out the silhouette in a fruity, floral sheath dress, a black rose embroidered with violet notes sewn straight onto the skin by Master Perfumer Thierry Wasser and Perfumer Delphine Jelk. On first glance, the material captivates with its luminosity that of mandarin and bergamot adorning black cherry. Then, a bouquet of black roses intertwined with delicate powdery violet notes reveals extreme femininity. This bewitching harmony continues. Delicious tonka bean joins black tea and mysterious woody notes of patchouli. The depth of velvet takes a stand: sensual, enveloping, and definitively enticing. the talk - page 85

Flashed Out We like a subtle no-makeup makeup look as much as the next person, but then again, standing out is sometimes a nice change. We all begin to think of experimenting with color when we get a new eyeshadow palette, then we steer back to the neutral colors. It’s time to drop the browns and pop some orange or pink eyeshadow on. Instagram has taught us that this beauty trend is one to try. We’re not asking you to drench yourself in war paint, but an eyeliner streak or a pop of color on the cheeks is worth a try.

Slicked Back This look is given many names: the wet look, the gel look, etc. but it is basically the same concept done in different ways. This look is super easy to achieve and has maximum effect! You can combine this look with a ponytail or bun, or even a side part or go wavy. Start with the hairstyle you prefer or even wet hair. Comb your hair back slowly with gel on your comb, go slow, so you don’t end up with a sticky result. Finish off with a bit of hairspray to keep your hair in place.

Describe your academic and career journeys. In the U.S., I started studying electrical engineering in college; while working on the research projects, we worked on laser systems to scan the human body, and I became fascinated with it, so I decided to pursue medicine going forward. As a child, I excelled at art and sculpting. Putting it all together, my background in engineering majorly assisted me in plastic surgery, because I see things three-dimensionally. When I completed my education in plastic surgery in LA, USC, I opened a private practice but also stayed on as a Professor at USC, fulfilling my desire and interest in teaching and research. So, I’ve been able to maintain that balance in my life. I have been coming back and forth to Kuwait since 2011. What are the latest procedures here at Royale Hayat Hospital? A lot of the new procedures involve contouring. 10-15 years ago, it was just liposuction and tummy tucks for excess fat and skin. The focus in recent years has been more about shaping the body. What is the most popular procedure, and why do you think that is the reason? The lipo-plastic contouring, which is

removing fat and using it to enhance the breasts, buttocks, sometimes face and hands. The fat has become a revolutionary tool in plastic surgery. Fat transfer can be safer than fillers. People are always looking for lessinvasive ways to enhance their beauty. How is that possible at Royale Hayat? We have the latest technology in skincare, and we have very qualified dermatologists and aestheticians who can provide these services. There is a range of treatments, injections, PRP, peeling, etc. that would enhance skin quality. What are your tips for our readers after the sun-heavy summer vacation? The first thing is to always use sunblock, and also to moisturize your skin. If someone is deeply tanned, then they have to consult their aesthetician on what they can do to hydrate the skin. Also, avoid prolonged sun exposure. Can sun damage be reversed? What are the precautions and solutions? Using lasers and chemical peels, some types of sun damage can be reversed but not always, so be careful and use plenty of SPF.

Healthy Fats Not everything is created equal, including fats! For quite some time, we were all about “low fat” and “no fat.” We went for low-fat yogurt, salad dressings, milk, etc. until the Mediterranean diet grew popular. Ok so wait, now olive oil does not make you fat? Oh, hold on, it can actually help you along your weight loss journey?

the talk - page 92

Yes! Healthy fats are essential for your heart, cholesterol, and overall health in general. When it comes to weight loss, it is hard to grasp the idea that fats do not make you fat. In small portions, they can actually be healthy and keep you full longer. This way, you can avoid overeating and snacking. We decided to test it out. For a full day, our editor consumed low-fat products and tried to avoid fat in general. This is what will probably steer you to sugar. However, on the days when the editor had half an avocado with breakfast, and salmon for lunch, hunger was not present! The verdict? Include healthy fats to your diet but do be careful with portion sizes. the talk - page 93

The Great Ethical Cleanse: Chapter 2 “Every ending is a beginning in itself.” I don’t claim perfection, in fact, I don’t believe it to be a sustainable long-term goal. So, if I’m going to attempt anything, I’m going to try and be better; a better daughter, a better sister, a better friend, a better citizen… a better human.

the talk - page 102

In my last entry, I conveyed about my overnight decision to make a shift in my habits and ultimately go cruelty-free with my daily skincare and makeup products. While I’m on track so far, I was already planning my next big cleanse. On December 21st, 2018, I purged my closet of nearly ¾ of its stuffing. It was a long and tedious process. I kept remembering the number of times I pondered with agony over what to wear while staring dead straight at my closet full of clothes and just being overwhelmed. It donned on me that the truth of the matter is: I did this to myself. Over the past 5 years of my Instagram career, I conditioned myself that being on-trend required mindless and fast spending. I hate to say this, but fast fashion became an addiction because it’s easy to get to… even though, deep down… I knew it wasn’t right. And just like the first time I went cold turkey on non-cruelty-free makeup brands, I decided to do the same with fast fashion. So, what are my options as a now ethical consumer who cares about where her pieces are coming from and who’s making them… and most importantly - are the workers getting paid fairly? These 3 concerns were my main driving force. So, I took it upon myself to research for the alternative ways I can still enjoy my long-term affair with fashion and trends without losing zeal. The primary method in reducing your consumerist print is ‘Thrifting’. Unfortunately for us here, this concept of wearing and reselling second-hand clothes has yet to materialize for people to start accepting it. However, the internet is a place filled with all your needs. A quick google search enabled me to find and create a list of online, sustainable, and ethically manufactured brands ranging from clothes to accessories to hair and makeup. I was also able to find several online thrift shops where you can create a profile and resell the clothes you were planning on donating, for someone that will make great use of them. Humanitarian reasons aside; another reason why I wanted to cut fast fashion out of my life is because

of textile waste. While slow fashion holds 4 main seasons yearly, fast fashion, on average, holds 52 seasons a year… that’s 7 seasons a month… that’s countless hours of laborers abused to maximize cheap bulk production of a t-shirt you will only wear a handful number of times until the next best trend emerges… all that, just so they’d get paid 33 cents an hour, 60 hours a week. It’s a cruel world, and if we find ourselves in a position to change it for the better, we really shouldn’t hesitate. By the time you read this, Eid has passed, and you’re well into planning your Fall outfits. But if you’ve turned ethical like me recently, you’ll find yourself itching to head to the nearest mall and grab the most budget-friendly looks you can discover… but I have a better plan. Ever since I introduced slow fashion into my life, I’ve been noticing a range of positive changes. I don’t shop mindlessly anymore, which required will and determination to not stray from my ultimate goal. I also automatically stopped buying pieces I didn’t really need, thus making my shopping trips a pure necessity, and finally, I started to notice my wardrobe has been curated for perfection. Decluttering helped narrow down my likes and dislikes, and I was left with a collection, and I use every piece without fail. Adopting slow fashion doesn’t just mean buying from thrift shops and online-ethically-certified brands; it also means buying local. Kuwait is a generous hub of talented individuals that deserve your attention and money more than any other fast fashion brand out there. While it’s a slow industry that requires patience and a budget, buying local helps reduce your fast fashion print. You’ll also be paying to grow a healthy chain of command that ultimately benefits the workers that are making your pieces by ensuring they are in safe conditions and are getting paid rightfully. And of course, supporting local means you’re supporting the country’s economy, and you’re helping in creating better opportunities for generations to come. The list I have won’t fit in these pages. However, these 3 leading brands can help jumpstart your ethical fashion shift and they’re all available in Kuwait.

The boxer engine generates 420 hp (309 kW) in both models. While the GT4 represents the entry-level GT road model from Porsche, the Spyder is geared towards open-top, dynamic driving on curvy routes. Both rely on highly efficient aerodynamics, a full GT chassis and powerful brakes.
