Hamsa
Tradition with a Twist Curating a fashionable Kuwaiti brand adequately fitting the desires of modern Middle Eastern women, as well as for those with a taste for the exotic and unique, designer Sharifa Al Ghanim brought us Hamsa a few years ago, and the creations caught our attention from the very first collection.

Hamsa represents beauty, simplicity, and elegance. It delivers a fusion of the past and the present, new styles and cuts and also specialized handwork of the past. Hamsa combines different times and different cultures into their creations to bring to us designs that go along beautifully with the current trends as well. What was the main inspiration behind the first collection? The first collection was a smaller one with just a few pieces; my idea was to create something new that is different than the traditional kaftan and jellabiya, as well as more practical and can be worn over the years. I wanted to combine modernity with embellishment; even with cuts, I mixed the old with the new. The vintage-style handiwork is what differentiates my designs. How does this year’s collection differ from the previous collections? I am an art enthusiast, and I love keeping up with all of what’s new. I also love researching different cultures. Both of these aspects are reflected in my designs. I realized that the African culture, in terms of embroidery and color, was not embraced enough in designs. For me, this was something new and exciting that I haven’t incorporated this in any of my previous collections. I wanted to design from this perspective. Our customers loved it! How would you describe Hamsa’s vision and what sets it apart from the other kaftan brands? We established our brand identity within Kuwait and the Arab world generally. We reached Asia and Europe, and our goal is to expand internationally. Our pieces are unique because of our attention to detail and precision. Our number one priority the talk - page 34
is quality control, of course. Also, our creations don’t just represent the Kuwaiti or Middle Eastern taste in fashion, these are pieces that attract all ages and all cultures, it feeds all fashionable criteria and curiosity. Who is your target audience and how do you reach them? Hamsa’s target is to please everyone! All ages, all occasions, we try to provide something for every stylista. For us, our casual pieces differ from our occasion-wear pieces. We design the casual ones for our customers who wish to keep wearing them forever, never going out of style. This was one of the most important points when designing, I love it when I see customers wearing pieces from previous collections, and they always look stylish. Another important aspect of my brand was for everyone to find a piece according to their budget. We have casual pieces and some high-end pieces that clients sometimes seek out for special occasions. Tell us about the process of picking which kaftan Sofia Richie would wear at the recent event? For Sofia Richie, we sent her the lookbook, and she picked out a few pieces to try on. As soon as she reached Kuwait, she tried them on and picked her favorite to wear. Which piece is your favorite from this year’s collection, and why? All the pieces that I design hold a special place in my heart. Since there are categories such as casual, semi-casual, and high end in each collection, my absolute favorites would be the simple kaftans - they represent me accurately!

Maurizio Pecoraro Exclusive Ramadan Kaftans at Al Ostoura Over 20 years ago, the MAURIZIO PECORARO label was founded in Italy. The brand was widely accepted for its distinguished creations and particular thought given by Maurizio Pecoraro to pattern techniques, a skill, and interest developed from his earlier years of specialization in men’s tailoring in Sicily. He went on to work as a designer with several distinguished labels. He joined Gianni Versace’s creative team for a year in Milan, Atelier Mugler in Paris for another few years. Finally, in September 1998 he launched his own brand, while at the same time continuing to work and collaborate with many design companies. the talk - page 36
It didn’t take long for the MAURIZIO PECORARO label to be considered as an emergent and successful international brand, accessible at some of the most exclusive stores in the world. Bringing together a vast array of experience and skill to create a unique and modern approach to luxury, his brand, established and well-known, became the first international designer to begin designing kaftans. Creating simple shapes that married the classic and the trendy combined with his tailoring craftsmanship, his kaftans are much sought after especially during this auspicious time of the year. Here’s a little more insight: We love the latest kaftan collection. When did you begin designing kaftans, and how many different designs are in this collection? This journey began almost 20 years ago. In this collection, I have created 16 different kaftans, and just one piece from each design is available, making it exclusive. It is impossible to make another one in the same design; as each is a unique piece. This project has explicitly been created for Al Ostoura. Describe the woman that you design the kaftan for. When it comes to this particular design element of ‘kaftans,’ I kept in mind a woman who is an admirer of fashion and style, loves to travel, owns her womanhood yet wishes to look extremely elegant and put together. I made sure to create exclusive styles, embracing embellishments and different prints and patterns. In this collection, I have used fabrics that are exclusive - just for these designs. Tell us what is unique about this collection. This collection is one of the most unique ones I have created, as each piece is one-of-akind. Also, each one has a different source of inspiration. My designs are known for my attention to detail, especially when it comes to fringe and embellishment. Even the beads have been bought from antique stores in Paris, and it is these elements that make my designs exclusive and stand apart. the talk - page 37

I Do One of the hardest choices in life is choosing your wedding dress. Will it still be fashionable in 10 years, or will my grandkids make fun of my pictures? There are so many choices out there, and the industry keeps throwing more at us. There are several things to consider when picking out your dress. For example, the venue, your body type, the length of the reception, how much you’ll be moving around. The list is endless! However, at the end of the day, you want to look back at your pictures and smile. Focusing on body type, if you have a pear-shaped body, go for an A-line cut that will show off your waist. Or, if you don’t want something tight from the bottom, go for an A-line cut that flows after the waist. If you really want to accentuate your waist, add an accessory such as a sash to your waist. Keep the embellishment for the top part of your body to avoid making your hips appear larger than they are. Built-In support for your bust is a must to avoid last minute mishaps! If you are petite, go for a dress with detailing to allow the illusion of length. For long and lean body types, go for a mermaid dress to show off the body you’ve been working on. No matter what your body shape, there is a fabulous dress out there, cut and styled in the just the right way to make you look and feel on top of the world on your special day, as you should! the talk - page 38
‘tis a Party Wedding season isn’t just for the bride prepping; the guests have a long journey of gown shopping! You’d think it would be easy since you have no restrictions… but wait, who said you didn’t have any? Aside from the venue and the size of the wedding, you also have to remember that you’re not buying this dress for one occasion only. It will be a staple in your closet that you revisit and wear multiple times, unlike your wedding dress. Talk about pressure! Pick a color that compliments your skin tone and can be worn both during winter and summer. Never white! You can never go wrong with black, but who doesn’t love a playful red? Try different cuts that compliment your frame, choose a fit that suits your body shape. Ruffles? Yes, please! Don’t be afraid to pick something trendy, trends do eventually come back. Enjoy the process, pick the perfect dress, and dance the night away. the talk - page 39

Viktor&Rolf Mariage Viktor&Rolf Mariage Spring/Summer 2019 is an intricate offering of bold and striking silhouettes.
the talk - page 42
Sculptural creations are embellished with delicate embroideries and signature elements such as classic tulle, iconic bows, patchwork volumes and feminine flower motifs – a mingling which, when paired with the graphic nature of the Mariage collection, results into a typically Viktor&Rolf statement on luxury bridalwear. This season, an abundance of flowers adds an ethereal touch, juxtaposing the stark nature of the collection. Lily of the valley, couture flowers inspired by the “Surreal Satin” Haute Couture show, and flower appliqué motifs mingle throughout the designs and evoke a play on opposites, complementing the outspoken designs with soft embellishments. Tulle, a staple of the Mariage collection is highlighted throughout the offering. Highlighting this essential element are two standout gowns: the “Tulle Patchwork Gown”, a voluminous creation with a dramatic patchwork of tulle volume crafted out of intricate layers of signature volants, and the “Lily Garden Sheath”, a soft and ethereal sheath dress with a crystallized ruffle neckline and an all sheer tulle overlay with intricately crafted tulle flowers and crystals. the talk - page 43

GIVENCHY Haute Couture The GIVENCHY Haute Couture collection showed us Clare Waight Keller’s vision which is one of powerful femininity, calibrated through architectural volumes and graceful lines with a deft handling of texture and light.
the talk - page 44
The GIVENCHY Haute Couture collection is an exercise in purity of shape and line, rendered in black, white and pops of color, in cobalt, vermillion, bright yellow or ultraviolet. For the first time since becoming Artistic Director of the House of Givenchy, Clare Waight Keller explores mini-volumes, juxtaposing them freely with oversized looks and flowing, flared constructions. Sculptural curves meet rigor of line in draped tailoring with a visual lightness and apparent simplicity that belie their technical intricacy. The transparency of tulle and organza finds a counterpoint in chiseled peplums and flowing capes or liquid satin; organdy petals are pleated like origami while traditional laces such as guipure or Chantilly are modernized with lacquer finishes, articulations, and embroidery in relief. Judiciously placed tube beading, paillettes, trompe l’oeil, tremblants, feathers, fringe and crystal embroideries illuminate silhouettes, while jeweled parures and precious bows are both striking and functional. With “Bleached Canvas” Clare Waight Keller furthers her philosophy of modern couture and broadens the distinctive GIVENCHY signature with an of-the-moment aesthetic that is hers alone.

Bottega Veneta The Arco Bag launch during Salone Del Mobile in Milan Bottega Veneta celebrated the Salone del Mobile design week in Milan with exclusive early access to the new Arco bag in advance of the official Pre-Fall 2019 launch.
the talk - page 50
Available in four sizes in a palette of natural leather colors, the Arco establishes a new language of intrecciato with a deconstructed, orthogonal weave that brings a looser and modern sensibility to Bottega Veneta’s iconic craftsmanship. It is made with a new variety of French Calf with a sophisticated natural look; the calf fettucce are bonded with suede, leaving an unlined interior that reveals the bag’s precise construction. The largest size, called the Arco 75, is available for men and alternates French Calf and suede. Non-woven versions are also on offer in soft crocodile and Palmellato, a calf leather with a distinctive grainy texture and soft shine. The name of the bag takes inspiration from the Arco della Pace, the neoclassical arch in the heart of Milan. The triumphal monument, completed in 1838, was the backdrop of the Fall 2019 runway show, an iconic location that underscores the house’s Italian roots. The silhouette of the Arco Bag has a fittingly architectural quality, with a dome-shaped flap—echoed by the curve of its long tubular handles—and a solidly constructed rectangular base. the talk - page 51

Clash de Cartier Clash de Cartier, jewelry that simultaneously champions and eschews classic forms, that balances clean design with an excess of energy, and a serious spirit with original charm. Clash de Cartier shakes up the Maison’s aesthetic heritage of studs, beads and clous carrés. Together, they form a singular, ribbed mesh which becomes Cartier’s new jewelry signature as imagined by the design studios. Clash de Cartier is a chic balancing act, a mix, and match of aristocratic codes. This jewelry takes a swipe at protocol, tradition, and liberty. A clash of attitudes.
the talk - page 56
Clash de Cartier, a two-sided jewel Jewelry that’s sharp? Yes, but soft to the touch. Geometric? Yes, but generously sized and feminine. Mechanical? Yes, as all of the pieces are assembled yet free to move. Clash de Cartier is fixed yet moveable. At its essence is opposition: bright, feminine curves and soft contours are contrasted with the nervous tension of a taut structure. Clash de Cartier, liberated jewelry with a good heritage Clash de Cartier possesses an innate sense of proportion that draws on pure Cartier style. In volumes and reliefs, circles and squares, the collection honors the Maison’s penchant for geometry which dates back to the 1930s. A classic style? No! It’s neo-classical, singular, unisex, whimsical. Bright, flowing, pulsating, Clash de Cartier breaks up the conventional architecture of shapes. The studs are held in place but free to move. This subtle motion entices light to flit and flicker; the metal seems softer. Crafted in 4N pink gold, the rings can be stacked and layered in all versions. Male. Female. No judgment. Clash de Cartier, deceptively simple lines Behind the clean lines and even spacing, Clash de Cartier is a highly complex feat of craftsmanship. How are the studs interconnected yet mobile? The ingenious articulated mechanism was entirely developed by the jewelry workshops. Each element is mounted and polished. Each step calls for a new technique, just the right tool. The Clash de Cartier piece is precisely calibrated to magnetize the forces, to hold the studs in place. The buff-top domed clous carrés are finished with a bright polish that is produced over a series of operations. In a final sophisticated Cartier jewelry touch, the inside of each piece is delicately scalloped for comfortable wear. the talk - page 57

Jack de Boucheron The brand-new Jack de Boucheron collection is indefinitely free, wildly playful and a touch rebellious. It also marks the start of a new chapter in the Maison’s history. The collection can be worn in so many different ways that 2019 will see the concept of wearing jewelry turned on its head! Every woman can choose the look she wants.
the talk - page 58
The principle? A gold wire sealed by a jeweler’s clasp. To play with the Boucheron codes, between couture knowhow, a rebellious spirit and the spirit of the times. Jack de Boucheron’s ultra-contemporary creativity is inspired by audio cables, while its clasp hides a connection inspired by a jack. This jewelry gives the wearer the ultimate scope of choice, like a blank page on which to write for the woman who selects it. She is free to mix the pieces according to her mood and her outfit. She is free to play with her style. She is free to design her own codes and embrace her uniqueness. Neither necklace nor bracelet, but sometimes both at once, Jack can be combined, connected, made bigger, piled up, transformed. It is playful and emancipated. With Jack anything is possible, starting with freedom. the talk - page 59

TIFFANY & CO. Announces Tiffany True
A New Engagement Ring Design and Innovative Diamond Cut Meet Tiffany True, the new Tiffany & Co. engagement ring that’s destined to become another icon of the house. With a contoured diamond cut that maximizes brilliance, light and contrast—the ring adds a new contemporary design to Tiffany & Co.’s legendary engagement collection—a collection that includes, most notably, the world-famous engagement ring, the Tiffany® Setting, a six-prong setting that has become a universal symbol of love and commitment. Tiffany True enhances this legacy and provides a new representation of love today—adding geometric lines and ultra-fine details to make this ring a modern masterpiece.
the talk - page 64
The Cut Of the four Cs—clarity, carat, color and cut—three are determined by nature. Only one, the cut, is created by human hands and Tiffany & Co.’s artisans make the difference. Regardless of its other properties, an expertly cut diamond comes to life in a truly sparkling way, catching light and radiating brilliance with every move. For this new style, Tiffany & Co. leveraged its unique diamond cutting expertise with an innovative cut, debuting this September. Named Tiffany True for its genuine ability to captivate, this new fancy-cut diamond exposes more surface area on the diamond’s main facet, enhancing its luster through heightened contrast and dispersed light. In the Tiffany tradition, Tiffany True favors beauty over the weight of the diamond. Available with a white diamond, the Tiffany True cut makes each stone even more luminous. The Design The Tiffany True engagement ring is minimal, architecturally constructed and discreetly marked on the side with a “T,” a subtle detail that is personal to the wearer. Designed to sit low on the finger, this ring has an especially delicate band that has been sculpted to reflect light in a way that does not compete with the stone, a design hallmark that allows the diamond to shine its absolute brightest. The basket’s delicate prongs blend seamlessly into the diamond, making it appear even more brilliant and stunningly pure. The Sustainable Difference Protecting the natural world that inspires the jewelry lies at the heart of the Tiffany culture. As a leader in sustainable luxury, Tiffany sources the diamonds and precious metals and crafts jewelry in ways that are ethically and environmentally responsible to make Tiffany a brand proud to be worn. After the diamonds begin their journey at an approved mine, they’re cut in state-of-theart workshops, ensuring the gems are always in the hands of responsible, highly skilled craftsmen. From the rough to the refined, the Tiffany True diamond is entrusted only to expert craftsmen who produce their art to the highest level. the talk - page 65

The C.301 is an exceptional automatic caliber developed by Chronoswiss. The refined Open Gear construction makes the regulator mechanism the main design element. Murad Skincare is Healthcare “Eat Your Water, find your passion and remember to take care of the most important person in the world - YOU! “ – Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD
the talk - page 72
The correlation between skincare and healthcare has been at the core of Murad’s range of products. Adopting and practicing the concept of ‘Inclusive Health’, a revolutionary system of care created by Dr. Howard Murad, founder of Murad®, Inc., tackling looking better, living better and feeling better, all Murad products deliver a sense of wellness and a feel-good factor hand-in-hand with a look-good factor. Desiring further insight and knowledge about Murad’s cellular water principle and numerous patented formulas, we rushed to the opportunity to talk all things ‘Murad’ with Tracey Wilmot, Murad’s International Education Director, EMEA, on her recent visit to Kuwait. Here’s what she had to say about Murad’s latest advances: Eat your water!
”Internal hydration helps external hydration.Hydrating isn’t just about drinking your water, so much as eating it.” We are programmed to think that we need to drink a certain amount of water per day; sure, water is important, however, what’s really going to help you on a cellular level is eating water-rich raw foods like grapes, pomegranates, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Imagine your skin as a pitcher of health, and at the base are all your vitamins through healthy foods that you can then top up with as much water as you like. The defining principle at Murad is our Cellular Water Principle®. Our products are pretreated with Dr. Murad’s patented formula RepleniCell®, driving water into cells hydrating from deep within. We truly believe in skin wellness through cellular hydration. A combination of ‘eating your water’ with benefits from our products will rejuvenate your skin tremendously. Retinol
“We ignite your skin’s most beautiful potential.” Retinol has great benefits for the skin, it helps with your skin cell turnover rate, collagen production, brightening benefits, and reversing environmental damages. Interestingly, Dr. Murad explains that we lose about 1% of our collagen every year from the age of 20, though it’s never too late to start.

Dr. Murad knew that retinol is the gold standard of anti-aging. Combating the discomforts of using traditional retinol products, our breakthrough Retinol Tri-Active Technology is a blend of 3 advanced Retinols designed to give you that Murad Glow - a buffer against irritation, a magnet attracting the benefits of retinol into the skin, increasing the skin’s receptivity to the retinol; all-in-all boosting and plumping your skin to give you ‘the baby skin’ that we all so desire. Just make sure to use these products at night and follow with a broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day. Myth: Sunscreen vs. Vitamin D and Sunscreen Indoors, really? Revolutionized sun care is at the heart of Murad. Our products not just protect you from the sun, but also from harmful effects from your devices like your laptop for example; the blue light and high energy visible light from such devices is a much shorter wave than UVA, UVB, and penetrates far deeper into the skin thus increasing pigmentation and sensitivity. Our City Skin SPF 50 PA++++ broad spectrum protection (no white cast) is an invisible, breathable film, stops actual dust particles and matter from adhering to your skin, protecting it while providing luminosity. As for Vitamin D, well a good combination of natural sunlight, healthy diet and supplements would be the ideal solution. Vitamin C Dr. Murad has been using Vitamin C formulations for many years now; our oil soluble formulation is unusually stable as it loves living with oil as opposed to water. Vitamin C is a fabulous treatment for not just brightening skin and stimulating collagen, but it’s a great partner with our Retinol products. Our best-selling pigmentation product called the Rapid Age Spot Correcting Serum is a blend of anti-inflammatories like niacinamides which I refer to as the ‘energy vitamin’; yet another ingredient called NHP3 dissolves dark spots on the surface, this serum also contains ferulic acid, antioxidants, it’s just a wonderful must-have product. Personalization That’s the beauty of our products and our philosophy; we personalize a skincare routine optimal for your skin’s performance. Other than working with a platform of oily, dry or combination skin type, we boldly address the three main skin concerns: anti-aging, hyper-pigmentation and breakouts/acne. I would concentrate on a good cleansing ritual, our Prebiotic 4-in-1 range is great in balancing healthy bacteria on your skin. We offer an advanced skincare regimen designed to help protect and repair skin exposed to environmental assaults, from sunscreens to next-generation vitamin C, addressing the classic visible signs of environmental aging: dullness, dryness, roughness, and hyperpigmentation.

Best beauty tip Let me add an element of skincare here as well. The holy grail of anything related to beauty, in my opinion, is our wonderful Invisiblur™ Perfecting Shield; this product really does do everything – your last skincare step and your first step before makeup application. It’s a primer, with invisible sunscreen (SPF 30), takes away unnecessary shine, provides hydration and anti-aging benefits and works great with flash photography as well. Skincare routine dos and don’ts Your epidermis is your upper skin layer, and dermis is the underlying living part; these two worlds talk to each other, be in tune with your skin and feed it what it needs. Never skip a cleansing ritual before bedtime. Keep in mind that you lose 3 times more hydration at night time, which is shocking to learn for most people. At night your body is going through a hibernation and repair mode, while the morning can be considered as defense mode. Make sure to use sunscreen after completing your skincare routine during the day, and at night I would recommend our Night Fix Enzyme Treatment to repair damage and dullness while you get your beauty sleep. Skincare for men As I mentioned earlier, we personalize a customized skincare routine which works great for all skin types. Our product range packaging is deliberately unisex and caters to both women and men alike. One of the main concerns of our male clients is breakouts and a good post-shaving experience. In fact, Dr. Murad started the acne range to address his own personal needs. As well, Murad’s Blemish Control products are dermatologist developed to help rapidly reduce breakouts, large and clogged pores, accumulated cellular debris and excess oil. It was refreshing to have a conversation about skincare with an emphasis on deep cell hydration and combating cultural stress. Tracey Wilmot did not hesitate to share her admiration for her role model Dr. Murad, not just for his remarkable contributions to revolutionize skincare, but for his authentic persona and artistic mindset; Dr. Murad is a recognized author as well as a celebrated artist. Dr. Murad’s focus has been towards the performance of a product and about how different ingredients work together in harmony. “You have someone who’s an artist in the way he puts products together. Someone who is a pharmacist and a dermatologist, always a visionary” says Tracey. Tracey Wilmot also reminded us to be cautious of misinformation about ingredients and at Murad – inquisitiveness and curiosity about skincare are broadly welcomed. Murad’s full range of products is now available in Kuwait at Bloomingdale’s Kuwait, 360 Mall.

Haircare 101 Haircare is sometimes neglected until we see visible damage; the key is to care for your hair to prevent damage in the first place. To start with, the way you wash your hair is important. If you have naturally oily hair, limit shampooing to three times a week. If you have very dry or dehydrated hair, then you can limit your hair wash days to two. When you over-wash your hair, your strip away the natural oils and proteins. Another way to protect your hair is by using serums and sprays that protect against heat whether it’s from the sun or from styling tools. When drying with a hairdryer, always make sure not to hold it too close to your hair to avoid damaging the ends. Hair products are essential, the same as skin products, read the ingredients and make sure not to use anything with sulfates and parabens. Deep conditioning is also critical, apply a hair mask according to your hair’s needs at least once a week to replenish and nourish the hair. Never neglect your hair or skin, anything you do towards their care is an investment.

What procedures do you perform at Royale Hayat Hospital? I am responsible for the facial procedures which is related to how to beautify the face naturally by focusing on what we call a multiple approach for the face. Dr. Reza is responsible for the surgical aspect while I am responsible for the clinical aspect. When we talk about natural beauty, we have to consider that this concept differs from patient to patient. Also, there are different approaches such as anti-aging, the enhancement, and the beautifying. There is also a difference between genders. What is the most popular procedure and why? Fillers and Botox are usually the most popular procedures nowadays. People are looking to improve their skin texture and enhance their looks naturally. Different techniques and procedures are adopted, using both fillers and Botox that can help achieve the desired outcome for the patients. What is the surgical thread procedure and why is it trending? Nowadays, as a plastic surgeon, you have multiple tools in your hand. This is one of the tools which helps improve the skin’s elasticity. However, we have to consider multiple things, for
the talk - page 86
example, the patient shouldn’t have a heavy structure. This procedure works well for people with mild to moderate sagging. Usually, combining the fillers, Botox, and the surgical thread gives naturally beautiful results. Over the years, tell us how lasers evolved? There are multiple lasers in aesthetic practice. Not only lasers but also HiFu and radiofrequency. All these are approaches that help the skin improve. In the beginning, lasers were only for hair removal, nowadays there are lasers for pigmentations, for elasticity, and for vessels. One of the lasers, the Fractional lasers, work on improving skin quality. What is hand rejuvenation, and who are the candidates for it? Usually, when we are talking about the hands, it is one of the areas that are obvious to notice aging. You have to approach it carefully. For starters, you have to improve the skin quality using the skin booster. Hyaluronic acid fillers are used for patients that need them, as they are safe to use. The candidates are usually adults who are looking for anti-aging solutions, and also patients who have gone through severe weight loss.

Maison Assouline is launching a new book:
‘Mosques: The 100 Most Iconic Islamic Houses of Worship’ this Ramadan Houses of worship have served as a benchmark for the heights of human achievement since time immemorial—the more noble the holy shrine, the more noble the society, and built to exacting standards and to scales previously unimaginable. Over the centuries civilizations have considered their own worth against the splendor of the local religious structure— and empires have asserted their dominance over lands and populations by virtue of the holy structures erected.
the talk - page 90
This is particularly true in Islam, a religion whose structures proliferated across the known world of the “Islamic Golden Age,” coterminous with the West’s “Dark Ages.” The birth of geometry and the invention of the double dome are but two inventions that contributed to the architectural splendor of the mosque. However, the mosque is much more than just a house of worship. It plays a complex role as an institution in which religious instruction is often given and a social center in which marriages and community meetings can take place. Wherever the mosque is built, it strives to be integrated into the sociological and urban landscape. It also plays the role of informing the architecture of the surrounding city and influencing its inhabitants. While all mosques stem from a common tradition of reverence, differing sects, regions, and practices have led to many innovations and novel architectural forms. Mosques is the latest addition to the “Ultimate Collection,” and is a journey though centuries and continents that brings readers to the threshold of 100 of the world’s most historically significant buildings that are home to worshippers of the fastest growing, and second largest, religion in the world. the talk - page 91

LOEWE LOEWE Engages Artists and Artisans in Visionary Crafts at Salone del Mobile in Milan Since 2015, LOEWE has become a hotly anticipated highlight of one of the world’s most important design events. This year, the brand presented a curated exhibition of basketry, hand quilting, and calligraphy with its fifth project at the annual Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan.
the talk - page 92
After four triumphant appearances at Milan’s Salone del Mobile, LOEWE expertly added the final touches to its fifth and most ambitious installment for 2019 entitled ‘LOEWE Baskets’; the exposition draws on the brand’s commitment to craft across all its activities. Since its foundation, LOEWE has nurtured the talents of artisans in pursuit of quality. In staging its annual exposition at the Salone del Mobile furniture fair in Milan, LOEWE recognized the importance of craft in today’s culture by engaging international artists whose talent, vision and innovation are setting a new standard for the future. These masters of handcraft have produced a series of exclusive objets d’art that were available to buy during the festival. In addition, LOEWE commissioned leading Spanish and Italian artisans to design and manufacture a collection of leather goods and accessories inspired by the theme that will also be available for purchase at selected LOEWE stores and online. Inspiration LOEWE approached 10 prominent international artisans and invited them to interpret the theme of basketry, hand quilting, and calligraphy in their own inimitable way. Each artist shares a deep knowledge of their discipline and brings their own distinct style to the project. The result is a gallery of one-off works that are both decorative and practical in their application. Collection In tandem with the artists’ limited-edition series, LOEWE also commissioned Spanish artisans to create a collection of bags, accessories, and charms to accompany the Salone exhibition. Each new product in this line is woven from leather and inspired by or employing the same techniques found in the limited-edition artists’ series. Collection: The Artisans Idoia Cuesta, Lugo (Spain): Inspired by nature, Cuesta creates her pieces using organic textiles and new techniques from her studio located inside a natural reserve close to the Miño river in Galicia. For LOEWE she has developed a series of woven leather bags using her ‘chaos technique’ where no finished piece is the same as the next. Álvaro Leiro, Pontevedra (Spain): His first time working with leather, Leiro took his vast experience of crafting reed and natural fibers into complex basketry and translated it into a series of intricately woven leather purses that resemble works of art. As Radeiras, A Coruña (Spain): Using traditional knotting and fishnet techniques learned from the ports and maritime villages of their region, the Galician women of rAs Radeiras have created a series of charms inspired by age-old handcraft practices passed from generation to generation. the talk - page 93

RIMOWA x KALEIDOSCOPE Guillermo SantomaĚ : Gas On the occasion of Milan Design Week 2019, contemporary art magazine and creative studio KALEIDOSCOPE once again teams up with the iconic luggage company RIMOWA on a multi-platform project developing in print, online, and live. the talk - page 94
Merging his sense of color and play with a sensibility towards industrial materials and processes, Santomá creates surreal objects and spaces suspended between art and function. His new installation at Spazio Maiocchi, inspired by the idea of a conceptual gas station, was centered on a fully functioning car customized with RIMOWA aluminum into a light and sound sculpture. Entitled “GAS” after Ed Ruscha’s iconic series ‘Twentysix Gasoline Stations’ and overtly indebted to custom car culture and the Light and Space movement, the installation furthers the artist’s fascination with the US West Coast. A photo zine and short film—shot by Thibaut Grevet between the wild landscape of the Monegros desert and the artist’s studio and signature home in Barcelona— complete the project, providing exclusive insight into the making of this one-of-a-kind collaboration.

Kaneka Subberwal, Fairs and Programme Director of ArtBAB 2019, earlier said: “The art fair’s 2019 edition would be an exciting amalgam of Bahraini art and cutting-edge trends discussed during the conference. This year, in a first for the region, ArtBAB will take visitors beyond the canvases of the gifted artists of Bahrain and the gallerists who bring some of the famous contemporary artworks to showcase at the fair and take them not just across borders but across time-frames too.” At the same time, the exhibition is pushing boundaries and offers visitors a truly multi-layered and multi-dimensional experience through exposure to a Virtual Reality Corner that allows exploration of some of the world’s leading private museums and a diverse Speaker’s Programme that will bring together art foundations, cultural districts and museums with fintech, blockchain, AI and VR specialists.
Another major impactful move from ArtBAB 2019 was the redefining of Bahrain’s rich crafts heritage through a contemporary design input. Visitors viewed large modern installations of Bahraini crafts seen from a fresh perspective and explore chic, contemporary modernized Bahraini crafts that will take to the world a new portrait of Bahrain as a country which is open to contemporary thought and where the timeless old traditions adapt to new thought without losing their essence.
In its effort to decode the intersection between art, culture, and technology, ArtBAB 2019 hosted an impressive array of speakers through a series of panel discussions, debates, and interviews.
This fourth edition of ArtBAB was aiming to reinforce Bahrain’s position in the Gulf as a regional arts hub, inspiring entrepreneurship, art education, and local skills development.

Two years ago, at 29, I started to take extra close care of my skin. It was the first in my life where I developed a skin care routine… and right before doing that I gave myself a couple of days to assess one of the biggest steps in my life; I wanted to go cruelty-free. This step was huge for me. For a person that adored M.A.C. lipsticks and had a range of hair products (none cruelty-free), I was about to uproot myself, but it had to be done; and for it to happen effectively, I had to sit down and be completely transparent with myself and ask: “What is really holding you back, Xeina?” Nothing. There wasn’t a reason grave or strong enough to hold me back; and so, the very next day, on a chill Friday afternoon, I threw out everything in my disposal and drove to the nearest Body Shop, which to me is a Godsend. I knew of its ethical programs and fair-trade policies and of course, their cruelty-free status. Although I’m also aware of the red flags surrounding the brand (i.e., their mother company), initially I told myself … baby steps… this cleanse is a lifetime commitment, to get comfortable at first, I will have to make do with the basics. It’s been 2 years now, and I can confidently say that I have mastered my way around the products that work best for me; I also feel like I have aged backward; my skin sure has been feeling it. Here’s the breakdown of what I now own and swear by: Skin* I alternate between two brands. From the first: The Body Shop - I use a little bit from their 3 main skin care lines, Drops of Youth (my solid day and night routine), Oils of Life (at night mixed with the earlier), and Roots of Strength (under-eye cream). The second, I found by coincidence at Boots: Botanics, which has 5 product lines: Organic, All Bright, Hydration Burst, Radiant Youth, and Triple Age Renewal. Sadly, I’ve only managed to find the first 3 ranges available, and they aren’t very well stocked; but if you ever manage to find their Organic Firming Mist - GET IT. I’d also recommend the talk - page 102
their Hydration Burst Day Lotion with SPF 15 for summer. From their All Bright range: the facial wipes, the day cream for all-day use, and foam wash. Makeup My base makeup needs like cotton pads, makeup remover, lipliners, blush/lip tints, and brushes are all from The Body Shop. However, when it was time to splurge a little and indulge in makeup heaven, I made myself a list of favorite cruelty-free brands: KIKO Milano: Highlighters, liquid eyeliner, and their velvet formula liquid lipsticks. I also get most of my face sheet masks from them, I highly recommend Zoomania- Make me glow- and Bubble Maker. Anastasia Beverly Hills: Her lipstick formula is super solid and long-lasting, you will rarely need to reapply. Her eyeshadow palettes are very versatile in their shades, and I love how each one is a standalone fictional character. ILIA: I came across ILIA Beauty at The Reading Room at Al-Shaheed Park. They are not stocked in Kuwait, but you can order them online. Ilia is absolutely the cutest; their formulas are very creamy and rich in texture. It’s the only brand I ever considered buying a tinted moisturizer from; long lasting and does not stain. NYX: I go to NYX for one purpose: dramatic looks. Their glitter eyeshadow powders are the best, and they are packed with pigment. Other honorable mentions that I know are crueltyfree but haven’t tried much: Tarte, Too Faced, Fenty Beauty, KVD, Hourglass, Urban Decay, Charlotte Tilbury, The Balm. (I’m only mentioning brands I know are available in Kuwait). Hair* This was a tough one. There aren’t a lot of options available here for this category, and you’re going to be looking for them aimlessly as they are not regularly stocked in supermarkets. However, here are some of my favorite finds: Inecto: Available in some Boots branches. This brand is hydration MAGIC, so rich and nourishing. They sell 2 main shampoo mixtures: coconut, and
argan. They also have the best heat protection spray EVER… but I was only lucky once to have found it. I highly recommend this brand for all the curly heads out there; you guys will love it. Aveda: Their boutique is located in The Avenues Mall- Phase 4. Aveda is a world-renowned brand known for healing and rejuvenating hair products using the power of plants, and if this is what you need, I suggest trying the Damage Remedy range. Since summer is fast approaching, and we all know how dry EVERYTHING can be… invest in their Dry Remedy range as well- it is super refreshing, and you’ll notice that from the very first use. Lush: Speaking from experience -the only time I used Lush products in my life- their purple shampoo “Daddy-O” is one of the best, it did a fantastic job at maintaining my silver blond locks back when I dared to have that color. So… if you’re a silver fairy
looking to go cruelty-free but fear to lose your new awesome hair color, don’t worry any further “Daddy-O is the way to go.” Lol, I’m sorry… I had to. Please continue reading. ** A quick honorable mention to the latest brand to open its store in Kuwait for hair and body products: Le Labo I hope this guide helps kickstart your cruelty-free journey with confidence, the same way it helped me. I’m still learning and discovering new brands, and I firmly believe that if we collectively stand for something, significant positive changes will show. With that being said, that’s why… this is only the beginning of ‘The Great Ethical Cleanse.’ Stay tuned for part two of my journey of changing my world and habits towards a more ethically sustainable lifestyle. the talk - page 103

Bentley Geneva International Motor Show Bentley celebrated its Centenary at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show with a range of new models, including a highly evocative new Centenary Limited Edition, inspired by one of the British brand’s most iconic racing cars.
the talk - page 114
Making its first ever appearance on the world stage in Geneva was the new Bentayga Speed. The world’s fastest production SUV features more purposeful styling to match its imperious performance credentials. Alongside the Bentayga Speed, the stylish, all-new Continental GT Convertible made its global public show debut. Enjoying its European show debut, and celebrating Bentley’s centenary, was the new Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner. This superbly crafted car, which includes a piece of W.O.’s personal 1930 8 Liter’s crankshaft, pays tribute to Bentley’s founding father and is restricted to just 100 examples. To commemorate the Centenary, engineers cut the crankshaft into 100 sections for display in each of the new Mulliner cars. The piece is beautifully mounted between the two rear seats and makes each Mulsanne W.O. Edition by Mulliner unique. Visitors to the Bentley stand were able to develop a deeper understanding of the type of customer experience that makes this iconic British brand truly extraordinary. the talk - page 115

The new Porsche Macan A sports car… hidden in plain sight First introduced in 2014, and outstanding from the very first turn of its wheel, following many tweaks and upgrades the Porsche Macan has received its first significant mechanical and aesthetic revision – and we love it. How much do we love it? Enough to have sent our Simon Balsom to Hamburg in Germany to pursue his passion. Here’s what he learned…
the talk - page 116
At their heart, EVERY Porsche is a sports car first and foremost. This may look like an SUV, but any car (and in the Macan’s case, it’s the S-version) that packs 354 hp plus get from a standing start to 100 kmh in a whisker over 5 seconds is a sports car by any measure, and, we contend, the 2019 Macan is a sports car more than ever before. The revamped chassis increases driving pleasure, offering stability and improved comfort thanks to newly developed mixed-size tyres, enhanced brakes and the intelligent allwheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system. We took the Macan on a lengthy (yet Autobahn-laden swift) drive across Germany’s northern Baltic-coast. It was March, it was cold. But, such is our dedication to our dear readers that we gritted our teeth and got on with the job in hand. (To be honest, we merely flicked on the heated seats and settled in for the drive. It was all as cosy as it was easy). But first, how does it perform… visually? The new Macan delivers an evolution of Porsche’s now familiar design language, and gives it an even more distinctive and confident appearance. The front end of the Macan has been comprehensively revamped and now appears wider. Redesigned main headlights feature LED technology as standard, whilst a three-dimensional LED light panel on the rear of the vehicle is also incorporated in the new range. Drivers have more scope to express their personality too with the addition of four exterior colours: Mamba Green Metallic, Dolomite Silver Metallic, Miami Blue and Crayon. Cabin comforts? Inside, the new Macan offers high-quality equipment as standard. The seat surfaces are covered with Alcantara®
and the steering wheel, selector lever and armrests are finished in leather with additional full-leather interiors also optionally available. Porsche’s sports car DNA can be found throughout. The optional GT sports steering wheel echoes the Porsche 911, whilst a mode switch integrated into the steering wheel – including Sport Response button – is part of the optional Sport Chrono Package and was originally used in the Porsche 918 Spyder super sports car. Enhanced functionality comes via the new Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, including a 10.9-inch touchscreen (increased from 7.2 inches) as standard. All-in-all, this represents a significant change to the first generation Macan, and instead of playing catchup within Porsche’s model range, the new look sets the Macan amidst the pack. On the road? We were ready to make ‘excuses’ for this SUV-of-a-sports car but, in truth, it delivers the same precise turn-in, acceleration, braking, and through-the-corner handling of all Porsches. Yes, you’ll sit higher. Yes, you’ll have enough luggage space enough for a family. Yes, your rear-seat passengers will thank you for their additional leg-room. And, yes, you’ll know you’re not in a 911. But, it will deliver you from A-to-B with just as much exhilaration and almost as much speed as any other Porsche you care to name. If you’ve overlooked Porsche’s SUVs because what you really wanted was a sports car… you should look again. Perhaps the new Macan is your perfect sports car? Until now though, hidden in plain sight. the talk - page 117
