Creative Workwear Graphic designer lost within all these corporate offices? Fashion editor heading to a professional interview? We have all experienced different fashion dilemmas but this is one a lot of working people struggle with - trying to look professionally chic. Workwear is a very diverse area of fashion and there are numerous options. However, what if the interview you’re heading to or workplace tolerates a bit of casual wear. We’re not talking about heading to work in your Lulu Lemons (leave your yoga mat at home), but sometimes you have to meet halfway. How to do that? A few simple rules to follow. Let’s say it’s a beautiful fall morning and you feel like putting on a pair of jeans with a few rips. How to dress it up? Put on a simple tee and a dressy jacket. If you opt for simple sneakers, go for a well-fitted formal blazer, and if your shoes are more formal, you can opt for a relaxed fit jacket. Putting on a printed dress? Throw on a pair of converse sneakers but keep your makeup light and basic. It’s all about balance. Now go work it!

Brands such as Chanel, Gucci, and Valentino have all started launching backpacks every season and they keep increasing in popularity every season. From high end brands to high street stores you’ll find the perfect backpack for your style and needs. Lots of people don’t really like to carry it the traditional way, we say you don’t have to! You can literally wear it everywhere… except maybe work, or to an evening gala, or… well, you guys get the point. OFF-WHITE x RIMOWA Building on the inaugural OFF-WHITE x RIMOWA collaboration that created a one-of-a-kind transparent case, the partnership officially launched at the OFFWHITE fashion show for Men’s Spring/Summer 2019 at Paris Fashion Week. During the show, the fashion world got an exclusive first look for the collaboration. An alternative take on the classic backpack, the event sought to rethink the way you travel and what you wear on your back. The OFF-WHITE Paris runway show was a tribute to famed 1970s New York graffiti writer, Dondi White, who was lost to the AIDS epidemic in 1998 at the age of 37. The event showcased an expanded line-up of the original OFF-WHITE x RIMOWA suitcase – transparent hard-shell backpacks that were exclusively designed for the runway and will not be for sale.

ETRO
Folk Deco For Autumn 2018 Etro takes a journey to the land of the endless horizon. For this collection, Veronica Etro found inspiration in the long shadows and dusty colorscapes of wide western landscapes wrapped up in the graphic sensibilities of European decorative arts. Bold patterns are inspired by the intricate art deco tapestries, the enameled jewelry boxes and the color blocking of Italian postmodern architecture. This collection exists in a cosmic prairie dream world unlocked only by Etro’s bohemian wonder. This collection relies largely on print for visual complexity. The patterns on each garment were mapped with mathematical precision and 3D modeled by hand to achieve the exact placement of every geometric ruffle, graphic border and billowing printed scarf. Weightless silk georgette and crêpe are elevated to the architectural via the intensely complicated processes used to create these fluttering, ethereal gowns. Printed chenille is used on fringed cardigans and wraparound dresses. Knitwear is the highlight of the season with masterfully crafted coats, capes, dresses and ponchos. The weight of suede and faux fur coats is broken up with panels of intarsia knit patterned wool. Chunky knits are flipped inside out on cropped jumpers to expose intricate stitching; jacquard stripes on fluid blanket coats are trimmed with suede fringe.

Givenchy
Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2018 For the Givenchy Haute Couture Fall-Winter 2018-2019 collection, Artistic Director Clare Waight Keller wished to create an homage to Monsieur Hubert de Givenchy, not only for the timelessness of his creations, but as a tribute to the innate elegance of the man himself and the grace with which he lived.
the talk - page 26
With refinement and restraint, the Fall-Winter 2018-2019 Givenchy Haute Couture collection mirrors the personality of the house’s founder. Sleek, graphic and slightly futuristic shapes echo those of Monsieur de Givenchy in the Sixties and Seventies, renewing the purist’s vision of effortlessness. Men’s tailoring techniques inform capes and coats, contrasting with the poise of flou in draped silk cady or georgette and crystalline shades of aquamarine, coral, verdigris, or deeper, subterranean shades of blue, purple and faux black. Mysterious, monolithic embroideries recall cave formations and slices of minerals, infusing silhouettes with frost, shine and the modern attitude that is Clare Waight Keller’s signature. Bijoux de corps crystal and metallic elements enhance duality, while supple, embroidered leather, velvet and the sheen of goose, ostrich and coq feathers are worked with the ease of faux fur, infusing looks with a mystical sensuality. In homage to his beloved muse, M. de Givenchy’s iconic little black dress nods to timeless glamour with an of-the-moment twist. the talk - page 27

Cartier
Fall/Winter 2018 Eyewear Collection The timeless aesthetic of the Santos de Cartier Eyewear Collection is reinterpreted this season with the introduction of new materials and refined contrasts. Cartier’s emblematic metal screws, appearing on every design, are inspired by the airplane rivets featured on the iconic Santos watch. This motif has become a signature. The combination of different colors of golden finishes represents the Maison’s savoir-faire and constant quest for perfection in style. For this new season, noble materials – wood and horn – are crafted through a meticulous multi-step process that ensures maximum stability and resistance. Sleek lacquered decorations add the final touch to this style manifesto for a contemporary allure. Available in three versions: in brushed and smooth golden champagne finish with brown chêne des marais wood and brushed carbon fiber rims, smooth platinum finish screws, brown leather nose and green polarized lenses; in brushed and smooth golden champagne finish with brown horn and brushed carbon fiber rims, smooth platinum finish screws, burgundy leather nose and burgundy polarized lenses; in smooth platinum finish with black horn and brushed carbon fiber rims, smooth platinum finish screws, brown leather nose and brown polarized lenses.

H&M Fall 2018 “For Every You”
This fall, H&M’s womenswear is all about the different facets of being a modern woman, exploring and embracing variability in personal style. It fuses tailoring with softness and delicacy in autumnal hues. The overall feeling, however, is always confident, relaxed and a bit romantic. “This season we’re celebrating the different sides of womanhood. The collection has something ‘for every you’ so there’s a focus on separates that can easily be mixed and matched – within the collection and with a woman’s existing wardrobe. It could be the Bohemian you, the Business you, the Comfy you or the Party you.” says Pernilla Wohlfahrt, H&M’s Head of Design. Overall, the color palette of the Fall 2018 collection features camel and offwhite with touches of powder pink, dusty rose, lilac, mauve and burgundy. Feminine silhouettes dominate, with high necklines, ruffled hems, tie-up closures, voluminous sleeves and high waists providing some drama and accentuating a woman’s form.

H&M Studio NEO-NOIR CHIC
Taking the dream logic aesthetic of the cult series Twin Peaks as inspiration, the H&M Studio AW 2018 collection is a mix of ladylike statement pieces and borrowedfrom-the-boys wardrobe classics. Fifties movie icons, with their era-defining looks, provide further nostalgic stimulus. Opt for the chic precision of a sculpting wool dress and a cropped wool cardigan, worn under a nipped-in coated cotton trench coat. Or embrace your inner lumberjack, with the must-have indigo precision denim jacket and sturdy turn-up jeans, a jersey turtleneck lingering underneath. Then there’s the enlivening neon pop of a fuchsia-red feminine pleated skirt, set against the subversive wood grain print on a grungy viscose-silk suit. “A distinctive look,” says Pernilla Wohlfahrt, H&M’s Design Director. Why choose just one look when you can play with an entire spectrum? From square-toed boots to college kid cardigans; rough-and-ready selvedge denim to super-slick suiting; hard-edged biker jackets to bow-tied blouses, the H&M Studio collection has a neo-noir impulse this autumn, but there are multiple modern ways to wear it now.

THE NEW WRAP: In sumptuous cream, this long wool coat with waist-tie belt exudes modern luxury. The wrap coat has its roots in sporting history. With its nipped in, belted waist, it’s no surprise that Marilyn Monroe was a fan. THE NEW MASCULINE: A sharply tailored pea coat, this double-breasted style comes in a monochrome Herringbone wool blend and in a luxurious 100% cashmere version. The tomboyish style was beloved by ’60s it-girls like Twiggy and Jane Birkin. THE NEW FEMININE: Rich berry tones add a hint of romance to this otherwise perfectly practical wool coat. Originally a riding style favored by aristocratic equestrians in the 18th century, the silhouette – a form-flattering nipped in waist and full skirt – is eternally flattering. THE NEW COCOON: The mid-century silhouette is revived for AW18 in a fine heritage check. Sleeves are cropped and trimmed with plush to contrast with the volume at the back. Its roots date back to the early 20th century when the couturier Paul Poiret reimagined classic kimono styles as opera coats. THE NEW MILITARY: In muted khaki tones, this minimal overcoat with exaggerated lapels calls to mind the chicest uniforms. Modern icons adore it for its blend of toughness and a polished, sharp silhouette. COMFORT ZONE: The big news in knitwear now? It’s no longer just about jumpers. This season’s there’s a surprising array of nouveau knits to embrace, from ribbed skirts to luxe lounge pants to the essential sweater dress. And if you do need another sweater? Loose fit roll necks and fine, off the shoulder styles are your new go-to. So what are the trends to seek out? Tonal white-on-white layering feels particularly fresh now; opt for different fabrics for modern texture play. Or go for bold color block styles – abstract prints add oomph to slouchier styles. Ticking the cozy and cool boxes, these are your new win/win buys. the talk - page 37

Paul Smith Autumn/Winter 2018 Looking to a bright future, Paul Smith’s autumn/winter’ 18 collection escapes to a more peaceful and positive place with dreamlike colors and motifs, fantastical embroidery and a softening of traditional sartorial codes. With tailoring forever at the heart of Paul Smith, the collection celebrates the suit and reasserts its relevance. In the opening look smooth satin lapels roll into dense pleats with jacquard wool sleeves woven with dancing fairies. On single pieces, houndstooth is paneled alongside Prince of Wales check and leather juxtaposed with hardy British tailoring cloths. The added length in jackets is a nod to Paul’s own past when in the Eighties he led a confident movement to relax the suit again reasserting its relevance. Suit jackets are deconstructed but follow the female figure, hugging at the waist to give a naturally confident shape that is never masculine. Satin dresses have an effortless elegance and appliquéd ribbon bows give detail and are inspired by Paul’s own drawings of flowers. In outerwear length is again accentuated. The perfect timeless Epsom coat in a traditional English fabric is given an unexpected burst of vibrancy in turquoise and heavy leather coats appear in the Dulacinspired jewel-tones. Leather engineering boots and tool bags further contrast the softened, relaxed tailoring. Friendship bracelets and charms on necklaces and earrings bring to life the theme of escapism and a sense of individuality and self-expression.

Paule Ka Fall/Winter 2018 Paule Ka opens a new chapter with a definitive first stroke on a clean slate for Fall-Winter 2018, one that reads as a bridge thrown between heritage and future. To best serve this renewal and to ensure a creative transition that stays true to the Parisian house while developing a new perspective of luxury today, Xavier Marie, new owner of the brand, has called upon Serge Ca jfinger, founder of Paule Ka to manage a transition and build a new creative era cemented around the ateliers and a renewed studio team. Underlying any of the creations are the crafts that give Paule Ka its indomitable spirit, today as much as 30 years ago.

In fashion as in architecture, a perennial source of inspiration, the driving force is the line, always the line. In a garment, it translates as a readily legible outline in which materials echo volumes, an alchemy between object and body. Everywhere, tension between geometric and organic shapes can be found. Rigorous cuts and shapes form a dialog with the softness of feather elements and draping. Playing with lengths becomes the by-word of modernity itself, a discreet reminder of feminine emancipation through movement. Long or short, dresses are expressions of their wearer: a spirited soul in a trapeze dress decked in asymmetrical bows, a femme fatale in silk lamÊ, all glamorous informality in a shapely pair of trousers. The season’s muse is dual, equally Diane Keaton and Diana Ross: intellectual but never pedantic, a diva but never without self- deprecation. A woman of many facets, rather than an out-of-reach goddess, she inhabits her life and her garments. In them can be read the irreverence of a supremely elegant lean silhouette paired with triumphant, scene-stealing femininity. The first page of a new chapter, Fall 2018 is the manifesto of the Paule Ka spirit.

Salvatore Ferragamo Autumn/Winter 2018 Ferragamo Autumn/Winter 2018 marks a new chapter for the historic fashion house. Paul Andrew presents his inaugural collection as women’s creative director, joining Guillaume Meilland as design director for men’s. This collection finds motivation in the frayed edges of modern decadence: a party once thought endless in the twilight hours jolting to reality at the first light of dawn. A new construct of dressing emerges: familiar forms are stripped back, loosened and elongated with ease and elevated functionality. Traditional silhouettes are expertly dissolved for a contemporary take on formal codes. Materials are unrivaled: from plush leathers to Italian wool fabrics, to heavy silk twill and soft cottons. Broad strokes of color were the starting point; merlot reds and mustard yellows mix expertly with parakeet green and deep Vatican blue between hints of nude and blush. Footwear, the keystone of Ferragamo’s storied history, is the seed of a collection that was purposefully visualized from the ground up.

Valentino Fall 2018 Novelty is what one is not familiar with. Novelty is the past, if discovered to remain in present times. The gaze traces the path; the eye detects and connects. Very Valentino. Glamour. Individualism. Hedonism. The values that have defined a decisive moment of the Maison, today. Deciphering the combination to picture modern times. An exploration of the iconographies of the Maison’s archive: the tiger from 1967, the dragon from 1968, the snake from 1971. An extravagant bestiary: a change in perspective cadenced by pois, enlightened by crystals. The personality of the looks as an affirmation of oneself. Clubbing as a frame. Present genres in the mix, in the spontaneous conversion of rules. Furs and tracksuits, dresses and boots, the nonchalant ballgown. Embroideries and logos mark the down jackets created in collaboration with Moncler. The glimmer and the volant. Rouches on sportswear and patent leather for the t-shirts. Lace on sweaters. Black that overflows and shots of decisive colors. Fashion as a personal and liberating pleasure, that glimmers while it seizes the moment. Blending to surprise and to amuse. Spontaneous glamour: presence in the moment, not an escape from reality.

Floating Diamonds There is a certain unmistakeable beauty in simplicity. We at times get overwhelmed with going overboard especially when it comes to diamonds. This trend is for those of us who love to frost ourselves with diamonds but can’t seem to find the perfect every day piece. Floating diamonds are reasonably sized solitaires beautifully set and attached to clear rubber or any clear material. The floating diamond collections include rings with one diamonds, bracelets with one or three diamonds, and also necklaces with one solitaire. Most local jewelry stores have them specifically made as they are in high demand. Stack them up or just go for one beautiful piece. Either way it’s a beautiful every day piece that will forever be in style! If you get bored of the clear rubber over the years you can easily replace it with a gold band or bangle.

The Lira The Lira is the name of several currency units (in many countries). Currently, it is the currency in Turkey and the local name of the currency in Lebanon and Syria. It also used to be the currency in countries such as Italy where it is now Euro. Since this is not a lesson in politics or money, let’s get down to business, shall we? The Lira as a jewelry piece! The beautiful gold coin has been used for years as a gift or bought to keep, as it is made out of gold and can be sold for cash or kept as an investment. For years a lot of the older generation have been wearing Lira necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets, you name it! This year we’re seeing it trending on international runways and sold by famous jewelry brands. The Lira, not just a beautiful piece of jewelry, but also an investment. We love layering necklaces with smaller coin pieces. If you’re opting for just one, we suggest getting matching earrings to go with it. Heading to a beach destination? A Lira coin anklet is just the piece you need to complement your look.

Giambattista Valli x Chopard The Haute Couture Models Get Jeweled up by Chopard Haute Joaillerie As a “jeweler” member of the Fédération Française de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, the Maison Chopard regularly presents its Haute Joaillerie creations at the Paris Couture Week. The latter provides an opportunity to highlight the synergies between these two artistic crafts. Haute Couture and Haute Joaillerie share inspired creativity, exceptional materials, unique artisanal expertise and a ceaseless quest for perfection. For the first time, Chopard jewelry models adorned Giambattista Valli’s models during his Haute Couture runway show. The Haute Joaillerie models selected by Giambattista Valli include several exceptional creations. Having fallen under the spell of a set of incredibly rare 17 non-oil Colombian emeralds, ardent gem-lover Caroline Scheufele designed a stunning necklace alternating these emeralds with equally pure D-flawless diamonds – the largest of which is an over 20-carat pear-shaped gem. This collection piece testifies to Chopard’s and its artistic director’s devotion to rare stones.

Diamonds and cabochons of hard stones are placed opposite on an open shank, exhibiting an original aesthetic design. Yellow gold complements the singular beauty of malachite and white gold accents the glow of turquoise, while the warmth of pink gold echoes the radiant hue of carnelian. The metaphor is accentuated by the addition of an X-ct trilliant-cut diamond set on the side of the necklace, creating the appearance of a brooch holding the folds of material in place. Lange & Söhne 1815 Tourbillon with enamel dial Limited to 100 watches, the special variation of the 1815 Tourbillon melds traditional craftsmanship with modern micromechanics. At first sight, the lucidly designed watch with the white enamel dial is a case study of understatement. But the large aperture at 6 o’clock alone provides a modest impression of its complexity: it reveals the one-minute tourbillon, suspended beneath a black polished bridge, in action. However, this tourbillon doesn’t just offset the influence of gravity. Lange’s experts have engineered a logical refinement of the intricate filigreed complication by adding two patented mechanisms. First introduced in 1997 with the Langematik model, the ZeroReset mechanism interacts with the stop-seconds mechanism for the tourbillon – patented in 2008 – to assure one-second accuracy when stopping and setting the timepiece. The mechanical precision of the lavishly finished manufacture calibre L102.1 can be admired through the sapphire-crystal caseback. The exquisite movement decoration is crowned by a diamond endstone in a screwed gold chaton on the fourth-wheel bridge, which is adorned with a freehand engraving.

Montblanc
Official Timing Partner of the Goodwood Festival of Speed As Official Timing Partner for the second year running, Montblanc will lend its timekeeping expertise to the numerous races that take place over the four-day event. As is customary each year, the festival will culminate in a spectacular 1.16mile timed Hillclimb Shootout, which will determine the champion of the 2018 Festival of Speed and the winner of a Montblanc timepiece — The Montblanc TimeWalker Manufacture Chronograph “Cappuccino” edition. During the event, Montblanc will host a special Pavilion where guests can come and relax and discover the Montblanc collections. The Duke of Richmond will also be joining Montblanc and its guests for a special preview of the collection and a sneak peek at the winner’s timepiece. Paying tribute to the Minerva legacy, Montblanc continues 160 years of fine watchmaking heritage with its collections. The Minerva Manufacture was known as an exclusive workshop producing high-quality instruments for measuring brief intervals of time with remarkable precision — for example, the 1/100th of second counter that was presented in 1916. A perfect example of this heritage is the “Rally Timer”, a stopwatch that was created to time motor racing with utmost precision and which has been the source of inspiration for the TimeWalker collection. During the Goodwood event, and in a few selected boutiques, Montblanc will present two new limited edition models that have been inspired by the color of the tropical dial effect – a Manufacture Chronograph and an Automatic Date. The dials are beige with brown counters and brown flanges and have been fondly nicknamed the “Cappuccinos” thanks to their warm and harmonious color scheme. the talk - page 70
Ulysse Nardin
CLASSIC SAMOURAÏ “Samurai” comes from the word “saburai,” which means to serve or stand by an important person. On the dial of the CLASSIC SAMOURAÏ, Ulysse Nardin’s craftsmen have used Japanese prints to recreate a famous sword duel between two legendary samurai, Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro. Equipped with a rare automatic movement – one of the most sophisticated in mechanical watchmaking, the Hourstriker CLASSIC SAMOURAÏ rings on the hour on request but can also be programmed to ring on the hour and half-hour. Each time the hammer hits the gong, the Jaquemarts samurai simultaneously perform the spectacular duel between Musashi and Kojiro. Each release from this 18-piece collection in 18 carats rose gold or platinum is embellished with hand-sculpted Jaquemarts in rose gold or gray gold. Ulysse Nardin remains one of the few manufacturers to master the use of Jaquemarts, and one of the first to have contributed to the revival of the striking mechanism.

The Perfect Blow dry A blow dry a day keeps bad hair days away! Well, that would be the ultimate luxury for most of us, but fact being we just do not have the time to head to the salon after every shower for a blow dry. The quickest option would be to opt for straighteners which can make your hair brittle and dull over time, or a curling iron for different looks, but also the same damage. Sometimes, just sometimes, you just want that perfect blow dry that will last for days. And we’re here to tell you how! First you have to have the right tools. You’ll need a quality hairdryer, the appropriate nozzle, a round brush (size depends on the thickness and length of your hair) as well as a hair clip to section your hair. Some begin with applying products such as mousse to give the hair more volume and texture but don’t do that after every shower as it is not the healthiest option for your hair. However, do not forget your heat protecting spray! After towel-drying your hair, let it air-dry for a while, then blast your hair with a dryer on medium heat setting until it is nearly 80% dry. Follow by sectioning your hair and start blow drying the lower sections with a round brush and work your way upwards. For the top part, concentrate on the roots as it gives your hair beautiful volume. Finish off with a medium hold hair spray! Voila!

Corporate Makeup Many of us have overloaded makeup drawers full of products that we bought just because “the packaging looks cute” or “it looked good on my friend”. However, at the end of the day we stick to a few products that we truly rely upon, unless you’re a makeup junkie then that’s a different story! It is a fact we often overlook that there are certain unsaid rules when it comes to the amount of makeup that is appropriate for certain occasions. For example, at job interviews and at work. Here are a few tips to go by! When it comes to your morning routine before work, make sure you tone, moisturize, and apply SPF. After that you can go for a BB cream or a lightweight foundation depending on how much coverage you need. Your concealer shouldn’t be too bright but not dull, ideally the same shade as your foundation or one shade lighter, set your makeup with a loose powder to allow it to make it through the day. Sometimes a simple mascara is just what you need, but others may like to take it up a notch with eyeliner. Both are fine as long as you don’t go overboard with the cat-eye. As for blusher, a bit of color is a good idea but do be careful not to go too hard on the bronzer. Last, but not least, your lips should be a proper neutral or blush shade or something glossy – done but not too flashy for your 9 a.m. meeting.

Gucci Bloom Diverse expressions of modern femininity create the nuances of the Gucci Bloom fragrance story. For the final chapter of the first women’s portfolio of fragrances by Alessandro Michele, the original Gucci Bloom essence is deepened in sensuality and intensity. Gucci Bloom Nettare di Fiori explores the mysterious and intimate character of a woman, her authenticity, confidence and unconventionality. Starting from the original Gucci Bloom, the rich, blooming floral perfume is heightened to an intense Chypre essence. Gucci Bloom Nettare di Fiori captures flowers at the fullness of their bloom, radiating their most powerful fragrance and allure. Developed in creative collaboration with Alberto Morillas, the original Gucci Bloom scent is blended into a Chypre Floral version. Feminine notes of Rose and the Osmanthus flower are intensified in the original olfactory structure featuring the accord of Jasmine, Rangoon Creeper and Tuberose at the heart of the fragrance. Overtly floral, the scent conveys a deeper sense of femininity in the woodier, sensual blend with Ginger and Rose in the top notes, and a soft, enigmatic finish in base notes of Patchouli, Musks and Osmanthus.

A lot of people have been investigating new technologies that would “shed off years” other than Botox. What are your thoughts on that? Botox has never been a final answer for anti-aging or shedding off years. But definitely it has been one of our very important tools to solve the issue with dynamic wrinkles, especially on the forehead and crow’s feet. A comprehensive non-surgical anti-aging treatment of the face could involve a combination of procedures including Botox, fillers, 4D thread lift, HIFU, fractional lasers, fractional micro-needling, to name a few. Skin damage in this region is a recurring problem even when using SPF. What are the precautions we can take to avoid that? Most common mistake most of us do is presuming the degree of SPF (Sun-protective Factor) present in make-up or foundations or anti-aging creams is sufficient. For the intensity of sun we experience here in Kuwait we ideally require at least 30+ SPF for optimal protection. Many of the anti-aging creams and anti-pigmentation creams make your skin vulnerable to photo damage or sun damage by adding certain ingredients and improper advise regarding the risk during sun exposure and sun protection. Certain skin types may not tolerate chemical sunscreens as they cause allergic reactions and have irritating potentials. For them, the alternative is a physical sunblock. The first fifteen years of life is crucial in terms of the skin damage caused by sun. Educate our youth and children regarding early intervention to prevent photo damage and inculcate a habit of using sun protection during outdoors at an early age. This will prevent premature aging of skin, sunlight induced disorders and skin cancers to an extent. Other than precautions, what after-sun care can we turn to for reversing some of this damage? Do not stop the use of sunscreens/sunblock. Regular exfoliation of accumulated dead cells by using creams containing peeling agents, tretinoin or office procedures for peeling by acids/ microdermabrasion helps in restoring the luminosity of the photo damaged skin. Daily care by moisturizers depending on the type of skin and additional application of hyaluronic acid serum helps in restoring the suppleness of skin. Nutraceuticals like oral collagen supplements also helps in boosting the luminosity of skin. Hyperpigmentation of the skin caused by photo damage can be reduced by skin lighteners or bleaching agents in combination with tretinoin and peeling agents.
Dr. Suraj V. Davis Position: Specialist in Clinical & Cosmetic Dermatology Department: Department of Dermatology Qualifications: Post Graduate Masters in Clinical & Cosmetic Dermatology. Board Certifications: Board Certified in American Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. How does drinking water affect our skin , and what are the solutions for dehydrated skin? Water and sufficient hydration is essential for normal cellular processes and regeneration. But at the same time drinking excess water is not a solution for dry and dehydrated skin nor it cures. Dry or dehydrated skin can be caused by a multitude of reasons, both internal and external. Hence its important if you have an excessive dry/dehydrated skin, to consult your dermatologist in order to analyze the causes. Sometimes you would require a combination of different moisturizers to obtain substantial results. What are the most popular ingredients that we should be looking for in our skin care? There has been an array of new skin care products containing “breakthrough” molecules in the recent times. As most of them vanish into obscurity, some of the timetested skin care products are still holding true to its value and worth. For anti-aging treatments the most important ingredients are Vitamin C, Alpha Hydroxy acids, Retinol, Hyaluronic acid, Squalene, Ceramides, Niacinamide, Co Enzyme Q10, DMAE, Alpha Lipoic acid, Copper peptide and Kojic acid.

Health Tip The Truth About Probiotics We’ve all heard about how we should avoid antibiotics and/ or get enough nutrients after taking a course because they wipe out the bad and the beneficial bacteria in your body. However, no one ever tells us why or how. Most importantly, how probiotics can help restore balance in your body. Probiotics promote a healthy balance of bacteria especially in your gut which can lead to many health benefits. We’re going to start with the one that gets everyone’s attention: weight loss. Probiotics prevent the absorption of dietary fat in the intestine which allows fat to be excreted rather than being stored. They also keep you feeling full faster! Another benefit is boosting your immune system. Probiotics produce natural antibodies in the body which can directly lead to a better immune system. Another important benefit is reducing certain allergies and eczema especially in children. Even if a pregnant mother ingests probiotics during her pregnancy, the child would have a lower risk of eczema in the first few years of life. Now that we’ve learned the benefits, some of us want to fast track it and take supplements while others prefer eating foods such as probiotic yogurts and apple cider vinegars. In the end you’re getting the same benefits!

How did you come up with the idea of J’s Bakery and what was your inspiration behind the idea? I have been a home baker from a very young age, I loved the focus and concentration that baking involves. You have to be meticulous in your measurements, temperatures and ingredients. It is pure chemistry and you need to follow a recipe correctly for a successful end product. I love the smell of baking, the process of testing a recipe and waiting for the end result; and then sharing it with family and friends and having them reflect back the love you put into it. Feeding people something sweet is love to me. I was pregnant with my first daughter Jude and I realized that I wanted to work for myself, to create something that made me happy. Jude was a huge inspiration behind this endeavor, as it allowed me to follow my passion as well as be a hands-on mother, it all clicked. This was back in 2005 when I started J’s as a home business. I remain extremely appreciative of all the love from my early supporters; my family, friends, customers and companies that believed in J’s as a home business which lead me to open the Bakery in Surra in October 2008. Personally, I can live on baked goods all day, every day. Yes, I am very health conscious and have a fit lifestyle, but I believe in balance and at the same time I didn’t want to limit my treats and wanted to have 2 cookies instead of one. I started breaking down recipes and studying and testing fat-to-sugar ratios in my favorite baked goods and realized that it’s possible to literally cut the fat by manipulating the recipe, ingredients and baking techniques without sacrificing taste and texture. This doesn’t work with all recipes unfortunately some are better left full-fat and fabulous… believe me I’ve tried! Why “J”? J - Jude and Jenna my two daughters! My youngest is Tala, and I am constantly reminded by her that I owe her a business! What was your vision when you first opened up J’s Bakery? I wanted to create a neighborhood bakery that serves wholesome, lighter versions of everyone’s favorite baked goods, desserts and treats, and it became the J’s Bakery’s mission. I wanted people to feel a sense of nostalgia and a guilt free pleasure when enjoying our updated twist on some childhood favorites. I wanted to offer treats the the whole family enjoyed. In addition, I wanted to be

able to wholesale to local cafes and outlets so everyone can enjoy our treats with their coffee on the go! I love providing snack solutions for local concepts that want something sweet to complement their menu or what they are serving. Over the years, what changed and what influenced the change? In the beginning I was very focused and strict on being a niche bakery that only offers low-fat or lighter versions of traditional baked goods. I started getting feedback from customers requesting ‘something good’ irrespective of calories or fat, and I realized I needed to adapt our offerings and serve the best of both worlds, the lighter version and the classic. This was 10 years ago when people were not as calorie and lifestyle conscious and not many cared about the “macros” in a product! So I adapted the menu. And this is when we introduced our Chocolate Indulgence treats like our best-selling Love Bites and Chocolate Balls. Food and lifestyle trends started changing and awareness grew, the demand for healthier options was back, and at the same time I was creating desserts for my personal consumption that I loved and were based on my lifestyle. The very same lifestyle trends, like low-carb, high-protein, dairy and gluten-free and most recently paleo, vegan and keto were introduced on the menu and we got a great response back, customers started appreciating them. Now about those cookies… and well everything else, who customizes the recipes and finalizes the product before being offered? I do it, I make the recipes, deconstruct them and recreate them. When I first started I had to actually test the recipe out, go through trials to understand how I can manipulate it or adjust it. But after years of experience I can look at a recipe and work it out on pen and paper, manipulate and edit it and then it goes to testing. I have a great team of bakers, some who have been with me since the beginning. I hand it over to them and I work with them until we get it to the point that I’m very happy with. We work very hard, not compromising quality, taste and texture. Some recipes work out the very first time and I know it’s going to be a winner! And other times I go back to what I did on day one, I send it to family and friends and even some day 1 customers and get their feedback which is extremely valuable. Once it passes, the costing has to be worked out, we conduct a photo-shoot and launch it. I also test it out on my wholesale clients who are always looking for something new to offer their customers.

We love the re-branding! What surprises should we expect from J’s Bakery this year? Thank you! I love it too. It was time, we were coming up to our 10th year and I knew I wanted to grow the retail side of the business. It was time to grow up from being a neighborhood bakery. For rebranding, I knew I wanted something more minimalist, mature, feminine but strong, a new look for our vision to expand. I wanted to work with cool creative women to help me realize the new look. So I worked with Lujain Al Fulaij (FB Branding Consultant) and Dana Abdal ( Graphic Designer). Also, as this October marks the 10-year anniversary of our J’s Bakery store in Surra, we will be opening our doors to our new location in “Vibes” Abu Al Hasaniya. It’s going to offer delivery, pickup, and a small café serving coffee, drinks and treats for everyone to enjoy in-store with a cozy seating area. We’re excited for our customers to enjoy the J’s experience with us in our new store. Now for a harder question, what is your favorite snack from J’s Bakery? That’s like asking who is your favorite child, because I truly do eat and enjoy all our products almost exclusively, they are my go-to snack, treat or dessert. However, I can never get enough of a nut butter / dark chocolate combo so I always have our stuffed dates and sugar-free peanut butter cups or protein bombs with me. A recent obsession that I’m super excited about launching in September is a line of protein bars that I collaborated on with @thedietninja. They are so good, I have one every day! Those Instagram posts and stories have been showcasing a fashionable side of the people indulging in J’s baked goods. Yes, I see it as J’s lifestyle. How does J’s fit into your life? I say a little J’s everyday! Our new branding is so cool it looks great with everything, I have so much fun creating social media content around it. And I love it when our stylish customers share their J’s! Talking about style, what are the items in your closet you would never let go off? Definitely my Mala and Rudraksha meditation beads, and fine and chunky gold jewelry, I love stacking and layering them. My vintage stuff as well, and of course Jeans as they always keep me in check and also my branded custom J’s t-shirts, they are my uniform. I like not having to think what to wear to work, one less decision I have to make.

In celebration of the legendary poet responsible for Iliad and the Odyssey, two monumental epics widely regarded as the foundation of Western literature, Montblanc unveiled its annual Writers Edition: Homage to Homer, at a regional launch in Greece this week. Hosted by Franck Juhel, President of Montblanc Middle East, India and Africa (MEIA), VIP guests and media enjoyed an immersive cultural experience in Costa Navarino, southern Greece, and the region where much of Homer’s Odyssey took place. Instrumental in taking oral verse to the then new technique of alphabetic writing, Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are among the most enduring legends known to the western world. Exploring Greek history, guests enjoyed a scenic visit to the seaside town of Pylos, where they visited Nestor’s Palace and learned of King Nestor, who fought alongside Odysseus in the Trojan War. In the evening, guests enjoyed Mediterranean gastronomic traditions interpreted with a creative contemporary flair at Pero restaurant at the Romanos Hotel, while being entertained by a spectacular fire show. With design elements inspired by the equine silhouette of the Trojan horse and the legendary spear of Achilles, the Montblanc Writers Edition, Homage to Homer includes the Montblanc Writers Edition, Homage to Homer and Montblanc Writers Edition, Homage to Homer Limited Edition 1581, with a limitation number that references the year of the first translation of Homer’s Iliad in English.
