Letter

letter/ One of the most rewarding things when working on a magazine is the ability to freeze a certain moment into a timeless portrait. At The Talk, we always strive to keep you engaged and bring you the latest fashion trends, beauty tips and designers to watch for. In this issue, there is a story we particularly like because it combines fashion and the environment; the Post-Couture collective offers an alternative to today’s fashion system, introducing a new era in the production of sustainable and affordable fashion. For those who like to be in the loop of what’s happening in the design world, we bring to you Jacqueline Lung, who explores the material agency of industrial steel, concrete and duct tape, through the manipulation of their physicality as part of her accessories collection. Most of us get lost in the world of fad diets making it really hard to choose what diet is good for you and which isn’t, the infamous low carb-high fat diet is reviewed by our health contributor Faisal Al Shawwa. Find out if its just another fad diet or is there enough scientific evidence to back it up? Because we know how much everyone loves Turkey, Turkish Airlines took us on a once in a lifetime journey to the beautiful city of Antalya; a prime destination for an adventure fueled vacation. The crown jewel in this issue is the talented May Al Qassar, who has been reintroducing the beauty of Arabic language through her manipulations of its letters and elements in her jewelry design. Until next issue, Eid Mubarak

Romantic Ruffles

An aura of romance and past-century nostalgia made its way onto the runway this summer as designers cascaded layers of ruffles, transparent effects and fluid silhouettes in feminine day and evening dresses. This time around, ruffles have been given an elegant makeover and are more wearable than ever. Sure, they still imbue a feminine charm, but they also add a sense of drama that makes for a perfect evening look.

Flatforms

Ageless summer staple

Polished isn’t the first word that springs to mind when pondering flatforms. It’s time for a rethink, however. The modern, architectural sandal is the perfect shoe for those looking to add a bit of edge to their outfit this season. Raise your game and sport them with a silky slip dress by evening, or crisp tailoring for daytime.

The Shirt Dress

Our love for minimal style is well documented, which is why we’re swooning over the shirt dress. This nifty hybrid is airy but tailored, and is warm-weather friendly. Its simplicity can take you almost anywhere from work to brunch to outings making it a definite closet keeper. Treat it like a canvas and accessorize it with playful pieces such as oversized chunky necklaces, a clutch and strappy sandals. the talk - page 22

Choke Me

The choker is back—and cooler than ever.

It’s a trend that’s been creeping back thanks to an overall ‘90s resurgence. The choker of the velvet, metal, rhinestone or leather varieties is simple, versatile and transforms every look into the perfect flirty ensemble that only spring calls for. This look has been hanging on the necks of all the It Girls and off-duty models for months now, but it works on just about anyone!

PAULE KA Contemporary Parisian Chic

The PrĂŞt Ă Porter French house stands for a symbol of French elegance and sophistication worldwide, with deep roots in contemporary Parisian chic. the talk - page 26

After the departure of Serge Cajfinger a year ago, the Maison appointed a new creative director Alithia SpuriZampetti. Since her arrival at 223 rue Saint Honoré, headquarter of Paule KA, Spuri-Zampetti has injected a fresh and modern mood throughout the collection whilst maintaining the codes of the House. PAULE KA has always looked to the 1960’s as a reference point, so for prefall 16, Spuri-Zampetti gave the 60’s motif a trendy and relevant hand. She played couture shapes and created volume with lantern-sleeved sheaths, cocoon coats, peplums and full skirts with a modern twist. Playing with proportions, she has added the thinnest layer of padding to the hips of the classic 9-5 dress, producing the perfect littles black dresses. For daywear, there is a strong focus on separates as SpuriZampetti proposes new shapes of pants and tops that will complete the perfect wardrobe for the PAULE KA woman. the talk - page 27

Unusual Material Manipulation By Jacqueline Lung

Jacqueline Lung explores the material agency of industrial ready-mades (steel, duct tape, concrete) through manipulation of their physicality and their recontextualization, as part of her degree project at The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). the talk - page 28

Those physical elements are accessible and democratic yet power materials that have shaped our world. The format of jewelry consciously elevates these materials, while eyewear has the ability to draw out and personify the characters in these materials. The Archytas sunglasses, which originated from Lung’s degree project are handmade stainless steel sunglasses with lenses held by screws. Each pair began with thin strips of stainless steel that were bent, welded, and sanded; every screw was carefully trimmed and fitted to the frame by hand.

The Post-Couture Collective

The fashion of the future

the talk - page 32

“To accomplish our vision, we’re building a global network of designers, technical researchers and production locations”

The Story Over the past few years, clothing has been treated more and more like a disposable product. The production of clothing is aimed for increasing volumes and production to decrease prices. Low prices seem attractive, but what does this way of producing mean for the future of the environment and the people that work in this industry? The Post-Couture Collective offers an alternative to today’s fashion system, introducing a new era in the production of sustainable and affordable clothing. In their vision, clothing is designed on the principles of open-source, and is made using 21st century technology. they are the first fashion label that truly embraces the Maker Movement and the Third Industrial Revolution.

the talk - page 33

Fashion - Designer Focus

mphvs one | off collection The first Post-Couture collection consists of six archetypical pieces of clothing designed by mphvs. They are specifically developed to be produced on a lasercutter and assembled by the end user. The minimalistic and slightly futuristic designs are cut from Spacer fabric; a 3D-knitted material that is soft to the touch, breathable and flows beautifully around the body. This hightech material is made from recycled PET-bottles, and can be recycled again after being worn. the talk - page 34

You receive the garments as made-tomeasure construction kits, or you can use a laser cutter in your local Maker space after downloading the digital design from THE POST-COUTURE COLLECTIVE to cut them. For a price between € 40 (D.I.Y.) to € 130 (semiD.I.Y.) you’ll be wearing the fashion of the future. the talk - page 35

Sustainability This innovative way of producing clothing and with the end-user giving the garments an added value that mass-produced fashion can never attain. In local production-facilities garments will only be made when they are sold, so leftover stock in stores will be a thing of the past. The materials they use are already recycled or can be easily recycled due to the production and assembly process. the talk - page 36

Martijn van Strien Martijn van Strien (1988) graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven 2012 with majors in textile esign and trend forecasting. After working for Bruno Pieter’s Honest by. label in Antwerp, he moved to Rotterdam, where he started his own studio in 2014. Van Strien’s studio uses modern technologies to bring innovative ideas to the fashion world. By testing radically different approaches to garment design, production and consumption he changes our perception and opens possibilities for a more sustainable industry. The eponymous label ‘mphvs’ shows the merging of his fascinations for science, architecture and style. In 2015 his studio launched The Post-Couture Collective, an open-source project that spawned the first maker community for garments. It gives consumers the possibility to produce their own clothing by introducing a line of wearable garments designed specifically for production on lasercutters and 3D printers. the talk - page 37

Langley Fox teams up with Tumi Langley Fox, known for her illustrations, artwork, and fashion design, partnered with TUMI, the leading brand of premium travel, business and lifestyle accessories on a one-off collaboration for their Spring/Summer 2016 collection.

the talk - page 40

TUMI’s “Langley Tote” was designed for the “girl on the go who’s not overly polished but ambitiously chic in her daily travels”, says TUMI Creative Director, Michael Petry. “Since beginning my role here at TUMI, the goal has been and will continue to be to evolve the brand aesthetic by making cool, innovative products and that’s just what this is.” The TUMI exclusive tote draws energy and inspiration from Fox’s own naturalistic pencil drawings— “I wanted the collection to give off a vibe of escaping to a far-off destination,” says the artist. “We can all take a cool photo and try to manipulate it through some app and make it look awesome, but we can’t all draw something,” she says. “I met Michael through mutual friends and he said he wanted something ‘cool’, something that the TUMI customer has never seen before… and I thought… ‘Why not create a United States of TUMI?”

The image captured on the tote was inspired by a bohemian, wanderlust spirit; Langley’s illustrated muse is drawn from photographs she’s gathered from her travels and friends over the years. The East/West tote is an updated silhouette for the brand and features dual top handles with an attached interior removable pouch featuring a passporttype concept (Fox’s idea). A small, leather dangler to hold a pen for filling out traveler information is a clever design addition that is also removable. About Langley Fox Langley Fox is an artist and model based in Los Angeles, California. After studying at Otis College of Art and Design and Parsons the New School in NYC, she’s made a life in the hills focusing on her art. She’s worked and collaborated with Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Forever 21, Sportsmax, Stance Socks, and many more. With features in Vogue, W magazine, Garance Dore, Into the Gloss, and L’Officiel Hommes to name a few. When not traveling she focuses on art, her animals, her home, and being in nature. www.langleyfox.com, @langleyfox the talk - page 41

indications, accentuated by a luminescent coating, provides users with optimal readability in the darkness of the oceans. The oversized markers come with large baton-type hands, clearly distinguishing hours from minutes. There are different shaped hour-markers for five-minute intervals, quarters and 12 o’clock, and the bezel has a 60-minute scale, also highlighting five-minute intervals, quarters and 12 o’clock. The sturdy satin-brushed black steel case, is fitted with a twin-gasket screw-locked crown, guaranteeing water resistance. A safety valve serves to equal out the differences in pressure both inside and outside the watch as the wearer changes depths. The brand-new rotating bezel in shiny black ceramic, a particularly resistant hightech material, guarantees users an accurate dive-time count-off, while the ratcheted profile ensures an optimal grip even when wearing gloves.

Roger Dubuis Unveils its first Kuwait Limited Edition Swiss Manufacture Roger Dubuis unveils its first-ever Limited Edition timepiece dedicated to Kuwait. The stunning Excalibur timepiece with a uniquely striking Malachite dial has been commissioned to celebrate the long and fruitful partnership between the Swiss luxury maison and their Kuwaiti partner, the M. Y. Behbehani Group. The commemorative timepiece, of which just 30 are being produced, is a veritable Collector’s Item. It represents all the brand’s penchant for inventiveness and innovation that has gone into putting together this iconic and memorable timepiece. The iconic Excalibur for the first time in the collection’s history, features a malachite stone dial. The variegated green surface of the malachite dial provides a resplendent sheen and an unique background that distinguishes the Excalibur from the flock. The dial has been painstakingly fashioned from carefully selected samples of malachite and worked on to achieve a flawless finish by the craftsmen at Roger Dubuis. The unique green of the malachite also sets off the silvery time markers and watch hands quite nicely, with

the silver of the hands and markers being silhouetted by the luminescent intensity of the malachite backdrop. The Limited Edition timepiece, like every other creation of Roger Dubuis, bears the Poincon de Geneve, hallmark of Swiss watchmaking excellence. “We at Roger Dubuis are extremely appreciative for the instrumental role played by our partner M.Y. Behbehani Group in advancing the brand’s presence across Kuwait over the years. The Limited Edition Excalibur is a token of our esteem for their outstanding efforts,” said JeanSebastien Berland, Regional Brand Director, Middle East and India for Roger Dubuis. “Roger Dubuis timepieces have always maintained their reputation for being outstandingly complicated, technically complex and innovatively creative in design, setting themselves apart as a brand with a difference. Fine watch lovers in Kuwait recognise these attributes of the maison, which is why we have been a success in the region,” said Ali Morad Behbehani, President of M.Y, Behbehani Group. Rado HyperChrome Ultra Light Swiss watchmaker Rado has once again proven its mastery of cuttingedge design and materials: The Rado HyperChrome Ultra Light, a striking timepiece with minimalist design and featherweight components, has won the coveted Australian Good Design Award® – the brand’s second design award this year. With its index-free dial and deep grey monochrome colour palette, the HyperChrome Ultra Light is a meditation on simplicity. Naturally dark grey silicon nitride lends the lightweight matt monobloc case its notable hue. The dial is texturized with concentric grooves that gently sweep downward, reminiscent of the soothing patterns sculpted in the sand of a zen garden. A fashion-forward Nato strap secures the limited-edition timepiece to the wrist, capturing the essence of a clean and simple unisex aesthetic. High-tech materials, zen inspiration The HyperChrome Ultra Light stands out thanks to its unique fusion of zen-inspired design and hightech components. The minimalist monochrome timepiece is crafted from a trio of incredibly light highperformance materials – silicon nitride ceramic, anodized aluminium, and hardened titanium. The result is a highly scratch resistant automatic timepiece that weighs only 56 grams – a remarkable marriage of lightnessinspired form and function. the talk - page 44

A leading design brand, Rado has over 30 prestigious product design awards to its name. The brand also has a longstanding tradition of initiating and partnering with design events and promoting young talent through the Rado Star Prize. The Good Design Award® is the second design honour that Rado has received recently, following the Rado True Open Heart’s receipt of the Red Dot design award earlier this year.

Rado Open Heart Timepieces

Swiss watchmaker Rado is gladdening the hearts of fashion and watch aficionados alike with its latest creation, the Centrix Open Heart. A collection of decorative diamond-studded ladies’ models now follows on the heels of the open heart gents’ Centrix pieces that debuted late last year. Three standout pieces from the ladies’ Centrix Open Heart collection merit a closer look. Two of the watches feature polished high-tech ceramic middle links in white or brown – perfect for a boho chic look – while those aiming for more understatement may opt for the model with a classic brown leather strap. The striking 33 mm dial is enclosed in a gold-coloured case and studded with 12 Top Wesselton diamonds.

The stuff of legends The upside-down crescent-shaped dial of the ladies’ Centrix Open Heart leaves the bottom half of the timepiece’s mechanics completely exposed, revealing the intricate sunray guilloche pattern of the decorated Swiss movement below. A stylized keyhole at noon further reveals the beating heart of the automatic movement, adding depth and mystery to the look.

The unique shape of the dial was inspired by imagery of the romantic legend behind Chinese Valentine’s Day, also known as the Night of Sevens or the Magpie Festival.

However, as the name suggests, the real star of this watch is its pulsating open heart. the talk - page 45

An ethereal take on the Charms watch In the 1920s, Van Cleef & Arpels began creating precious charms imbued with humor and poetry. Appealing to the refined tastes of an international elite, they relay traditional symbols of luck and love – mistletoes, hearts, horseshoes, and four leaf clovers. Designed in 2008, the Charms timepiece perpetuates this tradition, establishing itself as one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ emblematic watchmaking creations. Inspired by luck, this feminine collection encapsulates a story of happiness. Its clean lines – typical of the Maison’s delicately feminine style – are embellished with a playful charm, which rotates to accompany the movements of the wrist. Thanks to its joyful dance, each day becomes filled with sparkling hours.

Harmonious combinations Suitable for every occasion, this fresh and ethereal take on the Charms watch echoes jewelry creations in an elegant ,combination of yellow gold

Today, the Charms Malachite edition, is numbered and exclusively available in the Middle East, remains faithful to its original design, yet offering a colorful creation in the collection. The malachite, symbolizing hope and nature, is here featured in a 32mm yellow gold case for the first time. Said to be the guardian stone of travelers, it evokes the constant renewal of flora with its deep green hue. Evocative of the energy of rebirth, it bestows its luminous gleam on the dial of the watch. The curved case is embellished with details of rare refinement such as two rows of diamonds on the bezel and a diamond-paved rotating charm featuring the iconic Alhambra® motif. The interchangeable alligator strap, available in both shiny green or matt white, caresses the wrist, bringing light and brilliance to the creation.

Fashion - Interview

the talk - page 50

Tell us a bit about yourself. I’m a designer with a deep-rooted passion for art and design. Being the visual person that I am, I’ve always sought out and admired the beauty in all of my surroundings. Growing up, I wasn’t very sure as to what career I wanted to pursue, but I always knew I wanted to create things that could be appreciated visually. How have your experiences influenced your decision to become a jewelry designer? Well, when I used to live in Sri Lanka my mother had a jeweler. In fact, my mom would make visits to local jewelers everywhere we traveled. She loves to customize her own jewelry. One day, my mom gave my sister and I an assignment where we had to design a necklace for the jeweler to produce. That was my first design; I remember it had a ruby and a diamond on it. I suppose this task was what ignited my passion for jewelry design. Then, I went to New York to study graphic design. This opened up a lot for me since graphic design is the base for everything design-related. Living in Brooklyn allowed me to explore myself and exposed me to a lot of things. Young designers that were creating beautiful things in these little concept stores were on every corner. They had various backgrounds, not just in design, but their work seemed so effortless. When I came back to Kuwait, I started creating jewelry for my family and friends as gifts. Eventually, I realized that I wanted to make a career out of this, so I founded May Jewelry. Your designs consistently channel the beauty of Arabic typography. What is the nature of your relationship with this composition? Throughout my education, from school to university, I was taught under American curriculums. Because of that, I felt that I was never really exposed to the Arabic language as much as I would have liked. That being said, I’ve always been an admirer of the shapes of Arabic letters, and the elements that compliment them. I find them to be extremely underappreciated. As beautiful as traditional Arabic is, I find it to be extremely systematic, which isn’t for me. I know I’m not the first person to do this in Kuwait, but I have my own approach. I wanted to create something that’s my own, something personal, so I’ve created my own recreations of the letters. In my line, Bain Al Harf, I’ve combined the shapes of Arabic letters to create my own alphabet. It’s not meant to be readable; everything is up to your own interpretation. What inspires you to come up with new designs? A lot of people seek inspiration from their surroundings or from travel, but I’m inspired by my personal experiences. Because I’m not a very animated person, I use my jewelry as a form of expression. Basically, whenever I have a story to tell I create. I don’t believe in seasonal jewelry, or that there are any rules concerning how to wear jewelry, since it’s a personal form of expression. That’s why I love hearing people’s interpretations of my designs. You get to listen to their story. We’ve seen a lot of jewelry designers come and go in Kuwait, but May Al Qassar stands still with innovative designs and an unrelenting passion for her craft. What’s your secret? Well, jewelry is very personal to me. You have to be true to yourself in order to be creative. I never follow trends, or create a piece because of a business decision. You need to separate the two in order design something truly creative and genuine. the talk - page 51

Fashion - Interview

From the business perspective of things, people love the personal element of my designs. They enjoy interacting with the designer and listening to their story. People like May Jewelry because they like May. What’s your favorite piece of jewelry? My favorite piece is the bar necklace from my Bain Al Harf collection. But I find that bracelets are the most important piece of jewelry because they’re easy to wear and are there for everyone to see! I never take mine off. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I would love to display my work and operate internationally. Occasionally, I get clients from the Far East, the US, all over. My designs have also been exhibited around the Gulf. Would you ever consider branching out of jewelry design? Yes, I definitely have that in mind. I would love to create home accessories, or do something related to industrial design. What advice would you give to any up and coming designers, based on your experiences? Do something you believe in and never allow yourself, or others, to limit your capabilities. Some designs will fail; others will do really well, so it’s important to keep creating. I always explain to my customers, ‘Tell me what you want, and I will create the design.’ If you weren’t a jewelry designer, what would you be? I love teaching! Previously, I taught painting at KU, so I would definitely be a teacher. The idea of teaching young designers, and sharing my knowledge and experiences really excites me. the talk - page 52

Clarins Lip Comfort Oil All the power of plant oils infused in a lip treatment to nourish and enhance its beauty. The ultimate lip care treatment! Containing 3 key plant extracts, this non-sticky oil with a melting, lip-plumping formula will leave lips feeling nourished and comfortable.

the talk - page 58

Clarins luxurious treatment oil transforms lips from dry and damaged, to plump and luscious, while adding just a hint of lip-sparkling color. Instant Light Lip Oil nourishes, hydrates and soothes the natural way with oils of mirabelle plum, jojoba and hazelnut, for lips that look naturally shiny and appear fuller. The formula comes in three incredible tinted lip treatments inspired by the brand’s reputation for high quality plant treatment oils. The idea was to treat dry, dehydrated, flaky lips with rich, non-greasy oils, while tinting them with sheer colour that would

flatter. And on that, they really did deliver. We can rarely expect a tinted balm to improve skin conditions in any significant way. These were different. They drenched dryness in a silky, moisturising blend of oils that noticeably and tangibly improved matters within a couple of days. It starts out very shiny and sheer over either bare lips or lipstick. After an hour or so, the formula mellows to give your lips a moisturized, semigloss look. Eventually, it absorbs and leaves softer, line-free lips behind. The formula works very well over lipstick as well. the talk - page 59

Glitter Lips

Glitter is having a moment people

Everything is better with glitter. And lips are no exception! Glitter lips are the bold new trend that will give you your required daily dose of ~sparkle~ in the coolest way. This wild trend offers a glam update on a bold lip, making a sparkly pout the perfect addition to any look.

the talk - page 60

GET THE TREND 1: Start with lipstick. Put it on. Blot. Put on some more. 2: If you, like me, have no manners, grab a cotton swab and lick it. If you’re fancy, use a brush. 3: Twirl the cotton swab or brush in fine, makeup-grade glitter. Get lots of glitter on there. I got mine at an incredible makeup store in Taipei with entire shelves full of glitter; but Lit Cosmetics has tons of colors (and it’s safe for use on lips, too; for this we recommend anything size S2). 4: Roll or pat glitter onto the lips, covering every inch. Repeat! Until your mouth is soooo sparkly. 5: Press lips together to tamp the glitter into place. Then stick a finger in your mouth, purse your lips, and slowly pull the finger out. This is to remove any particles waiting on the inside of your lips to hop onto your teeth. 6: Go dazzle everyone!

Everyone tells you how incredible moms feel the minute they lay their eyes on their babies, but nobody tells you what happens 10 minutes, a week or 6 months later. In my page, I will tap into mothers’ constant anxieties and fears of uncertainties that come with being a mom as well as some crucial inside truths that a lot of women feel but are reluctant to talk about. What we teach our kids: • ABC’s, 123’s • Respect your elders • Don’t talk to strangers • Stand in line • Eat your greens What our kids teach us: • Triple tasking • Patience and strength • Curiosity and courage • Selflessness and Unconditional love Triple Tasking: Some days you will wish you were born with more than just two hands, and it will seem absolutely impossible to get everything done around the house; taking care of your baby, yourself, your spouse, and your other kids (if any). That’s when single tasking becomes so yesterday. You’ll be developing super human powers; you’ll find new uses for your neck, chin, legs, arms, your pinkie and your toes. Triple tasking will be a way of life. The very next morning of my delivery, while I was still at the hospital, breakfast arrived at exactly 8 AM. Can you guess what else arrived alongside? A hungry baby! Did I nurse my baby and let my breakfast wait? Nope! Did I ignore the baby until I had filled my own tummy first? Nope! Task one and task two were fit into one timeframe. It wasn’t easy for a first timer, but definitely doable. When I got back home and started wearing my baby in a wrap, I could

not only nurse and eat at the very same time, but also send emails, jot down tasks and do everything else so effortlessly all at once. Now even when my kid is at school and I have all the time in the world (5 hours a-day) I still juggle 3-4 tasks at once. I feel like I can accomplish so much in so little time. Thank you baby for that! Patience and Strength: From colic to vaccines to separation anxiety on the first week of school, your child will throw nuclear tantrums every now and then, and there will be a lot of tears and sweat from both of you. At first, everything will seem so out of control and you’ll want to just sit and weep with your baby, until you learn how to comfort yourself and your child together easily. It will just need a whole lot of trial and errors, time and practice. Throughout your pregnancy you had no other choice but to wait, nine long months of baby baking. That’s 40 weeks, I mean that’s 273 days… 6570 hours… My point is, if you’ve waited all that long to give birth and you still think you’re an impatient person, you’re wrong. You’re powerful beyond measure! They say motherhood changes you, and it sure does… it challenges your tolerance day in and day out, just so it creates the best version of you.

the talk - page 63

Health - Let’s talk about babies

Curiosity and Courage: As we grew older, we created comfort zones and safety shells for ourselves that we seldom cross or break. Smaller children on the other hand don’t have that yet. They’re little explorers, their curiosity says nothing’s off limit, I’ll climb a table and jump off to see what happens. I’ll lick absolutely everything to have a taste of the world around me. I’ll climb the stairways 100,000 times, without anybody’s help. They’ll fall and they’ll get hurt but they’ll want to do it again and again until they’ve learned how to do it. My son at 19 months would literally scream at me when I try to help him up and down the stairs. Whenever he sees a 4-5 step staircase he stops and tells me “Mama, no, no, no” which in actual words mean. “I don’t need help, I’ve got this!” and I let him practice on his own. Thanks to my easy going parenting methods, and his courageous little heart, he could go up and down by himself at 20 months old. Give them guidance and let them be little, do not be overprotective. Let them discover the world and follow them out of your own comfort zones because that’s when we learn and that’s where life happens, out of our safety shells. Go out there and be fearless. Learn from your curious mischievous toddler. Selflessness and Unconditional Love I’m not sure how to describe and put unconditional love into words so I won’t, I will leave that for you to feel. But part of this absolute love is you being selfless. It is you, choosing your

the talk - page 64

baby first, always and for as long as you live. Their well-being matters more to you than your own, when they’re sad you’ll feel terrible, when they’re happy you’ll feel ecstatic and when they’re bored, you’ll definitely feel guilty, although you shouldn’t, you’ve been clowning around to make them laugh since the day they were born. We deserve a break from being entertainers, but again, we are greatly selfless and we will feel awful knowing we could get them out of that state of boredom if we go a little out of our way. (Again!) What’s a little headache? I’ll just pop a pill of Acti-fast and get going. I’ve been up since the crack of dawn and I’ll miss my nap to take my kids out? It’s alright, I’ll grab a 4 shot espresso on the way. Whoever said motherhood is a full time job surely did not exaggerate, but it’s the only job with the sweetest reward of countless hugs, kisses and I love you’s that mean the world to all of us parents. The day your first child is born is the day that you are also born as a parent, and in this paternity journey where you are your child’s tutor for practical life, you’ll find that you are learning the most fundamental life lessons that no book could ever deliver. Be attentive. Be mindful. My mother used to always say you’ll never understand true love and sacrifice until you become a mother. Lesson learned.

Bananas

Mother Nature’s Energy Bar

After discovering the many health benefits and reasons to add them to your diet, you’ll never look at a banana the same way again. Bananas combat depression, make you smarter, relieve morning sickness, protect against kidney cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and blindness. They can cure the itch of a mosquito bite and put a great shine on your shoes. Lets explore some health benefits of this superfruit. the talk - page 66

“Despite their shape and size, bananas are actually berries like strawberries and blueberries”

1 – Provides Energy: Bananas provide energy through their high content of healthy carbohydrates and potassium, which makes them a perfect food for athletes and active people. Eating bananas also helps to restore the electrolyte balance in your body which is important after a strenuous workout. If you have an active lifestyle, you will also appreciate the perfect packaging and portability of bananas. A banana green smoothie can also be carried anywhere without the risk of bruising! 2 – Promotes Cardiovascular Health: Bananas are a rich source of potassium, a mineral that has been linked to maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. Studies show that a diet rich in foods containing potassium (such as bananas) significantly lowers the risk of stroke. The fiber in bananas also help promote cardiovascular health. 3 – Antacid and Stomach Health: Bananas have a natural antacid effect which protects against stomach ulcers and ulcer damage. Eating bananas helps to stimulate the cells in your stomach that compose the acidprotective lining. Ironically, some people complain that eating bananas gives them heartburn. Suggested causes for this might be that unripe or partially-ripe

bananas have sugars and starches that are not as easily digestible for some people. Possible allergies might play a role as well. 4 – Digestive/Colon Health: Bananas can provide relief for constipation and help normalize digestive function. Bananas contain tryptophan, an amino acid which is used by your body to produce serotonin. Serotonin plays a significant role in regulating intestinal movement and function. 5 – Balanced Mood And Brain Health: The tryptophan content of bananas which lead to the production of serotonin also helps regulate mood, sleep patters, muscle contraction, appetite, memory and learning. Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6, which studies suggest may reduce the risk for Parkinson’s disease. 6 – Improved Mineral/Nutrient Absorption: Bananas are a rich source of fructooligosaccharide which helps nourish helpful bacteria in your digestive tract which are responsible for aiding digestion and the production/processing of vitamins and minerals. Bananas have been shown to play a role in the improved absorption of minerals such as calcium. Adding a banana to your fruit or green smoothie will help maximize the nutrients that are available.

7 – Promotes Kidney Health: Potassium and antioxidant phenolic compounds in bananas play a role in protecting against kidney disease and cancers. 8 – Immune System Support: Bananas are a great source of vitamin B6, which plays a roll in the production of antibodies to fight off disease. 9 – Low Glycemic: Green (unripe) bananas are low on the glycemic scale which makes it a great food for those with diabetes. 10 – Weight Loss Benefits: Bananas are a low-calorie food, about 100 or so calories in a medium fruit. The fiber content in bananas helps you feel full which can help you avoid snacking between meals. Bananas are beneficial in helping you reach your weight loss goals. In fact, there is a popular “Banana Diet” that originated in Japan and recently took the internet by storm. the talk - page 68

The Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet: Friend or Fiend?

In recent times, the low-carb, high-fat diet (LCHF) has been making the research headlines time and time again. Is this just another fad diet, or is there scientific evidence to back it up?

Written by Faisal Alshawa the talk - page 70

The science behind low-carb, high-fat consumption makes sense, and it has been proven that this regimen can help those suffering from diabetes and obesity, while aiding with weight-loss. Simply put, the LCHF diet entails eating a high proportion of healthy fats while significantly reducing the consumption of carbohydrates, especially nonrefined, starchy carbohydrates. Energy Production in the Human Body Before I dig deeper into this, let me briefly explain to you the body’s mechanism of energy production. The human body’s preferred fuel source is carbohydrates, a quick and easy means of produce energy. Once digested, carbohydrates transform into glucose (sugar) which causes the release of insulin (a hormone) to decide the fate of sugars. Insulin either uses the sugars for energy or stores them in the muscle and/or liver for later use. Fat, on the other hand, is stored in the form of triglycerides. In order to use triglycerides for energy, the body must break it down into fatty acids, which can then be used in the energy-processing system. This process takes more time than carbohydrate metabolism (burning), hence why our bodies prefer using carbohydrates for energy. When dealing with clients, I love to use the analogy of an automobile to help them understand energy production. An automobile needs gas in order to move efficiently. Similarly, as long as we are consuming carbohydrates, our body will continue to burn carbohydrates for energy – leaving fat almost untouched. This serves as the underlying purpose of the LCHF diet – to adapt the body to metabolize fats for energy rather than carbohydrates, ultimately leading the body to become a ‘fat-burning machine’. Approaching the LCHF Lifestyle The optimal LCHF diet should consist of 70% fats, 25% proteins and 5% carbohydrates. Essentially, this means that you should avoid sugars and simple carbohydrates such as white

bread, pasta and rice. Similarly, you should keep a safe distance from fruits and vegetables with a high sugar content including bananas, dates, mangoes, white potatoes and beans. Instead, the majority of your diet should consist of healthy fats that are derived from animals, eggs, avocadoes, nuts, olive oil, coconut oil and grass-fed butter; and when it comes to dairies, you should definitely indulge in full-fat products. In terms of fruits and vegetables, stick to those with a low sugar content such as berries (all kinds), sweet potato, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and leafy greens. Alternative benefits to the LCHF Diet It is important to note that the LCHF diet aids with more than just weigh-loss. When considering disease prevention, a LCHF diet may help obese and diabetic individuals, as well. As mentioned, when carbohydrates are consumed, there is a rise in blood sugar levels. If consumed in excess, the fat-storing hormone, insulin, will store the remaining carbohydrates (or sugar) as fat. Consequently, this excessive ingestion of carbohydrates and sugars poses a grave threat to diabetics and overweight individuals. Hence, reducing the intake of carbohydrates will not only adapt the body to using stored fat as energy, it may help stabilize blood sugar levels and lessen the excretion of insulin to minimize fat storage, all of which is beneficial for diabetic and obese individuals. Indeed, the scientific evidence suggests likewise. There you have it – the LCHF diet in a nutshell. Before concluding, it’s important to point out that no one diet works for everyone. It is your responsibility to understand your needs, goals, food habits and lifestyle in order to know whether this diet is suitable for you or not. If you’re an athlete or engage in regular exercise, this diet may not necessarily be the best diet to opt for. Nevertheless, my overall view of this diet is a positive one. Through well-controlled studies, scientists have shown this diet to be beneficial for those looking to lose weight, burn fat and prevent certain diseases from arising and escalating. the talk - page 71

The awaited exhibition revealed more than 55 physical and digital artworks as the gallery opened its doors for VIP invitees and announced the winners during that night. The art pieces depicted the talent and artistry of the participants, along with their incredible skills in creating a unique piece of art where the Red Bull can is its sole point of inspiration. and curator Amira Behbehani. The judges assessed and rated the wonderfully crafted pieces of art based on creativity, theme and final presentation. This year, a new category was featured; in addition to the physical art, the digital displayed art was introduced to the competition for the first time. The digital displayed art could be a work of art that can be displayed on a screen and should include a digital version of the Red Bull can in the final piece and submissions could take the form of an animation, a digital short film, stop motion, or GIF. From the physical artworks category, the first place winner is participant

Mohammed Maya, who was awarded 1000 K.D for his artwork “The Impact” – a statue of a man depicting the impact of the energy drink “Red Bull”. The artwork took Mohammed Maya 6 weeks of hard work and focus, and the outcome was absolutely worthwhile. “I did not expect to win at all,” said the first place winner, despite his strong effort. He added: “I worked every day for a month and a half and I’m very delighted that I won first place”. The second place winner was participant Omar Al Hamad who won 750 K.D for his antiquated car with touches that made it look rusty and vintage. The third place went to participant Huda Jassim who won 500 K.D for an artwork that was no less creative or insightful as the other

two winners. Her art piece was not only well designed but also rich in concept as it portrayed a woman’s face where each part connected to a large blue frame, which she named “Pieces of Me”. “I wanted to design an artwork that symbolizes a woman with a strong character who defies hardships and keeps herself together”, she commented when asked about her the piece of art. As for the digital category, the first winner announced was Aisha Burahma, who received 1000 K.D for a unique digital artwork that starts as a sketch of a can with wings then turns into a real can of Red Bull. The exhibition continued to receive guests and art enthusiasts until the 25th June at 360 Mall.

Pieke Bergmans ‘I am a virus’

Viruses played a central role in the early evolution and are still one of the largest reservoirs of unexplored genetic diversity on earth. The DESIGN VIRUS; a central theme in Pieke’s work as it binds the many disciplines and materials she works with.

the talk - page 80

Pieke’s objects are called viruses, due to their natural forms and the way they come to life. But eventually, the biggest virus of them all is the designer in person. Manipulating standard production processes is by all means viral behavior. In general mass production, a single form is endlessly and perfectly multiplied like a healthy cell. As she allows room for change and serendipity, Pieke aims to create processes in which objects are never completely the same. Like a virus, her works change and adapt to various conditions, disrupting common ideas and the predictable evolution of form and design. the talk - page 81

All are materials that become soft and malleable by heating during the production process. ILLUSION In a completely new direction for her work, Bergmans has created tables with patterns through movement. The Most Astounding Venues from this Summer’s European And Olympic Games This summer will play host to number of athletic showcases, including the 2016 Olympic games and the UEFA Euros. While most spectators will be tuning in to watch the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Roger Federer in action, we’ve decided to highlight the venues in which these tournaments will be hosted. From Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome to the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in Rio De Janeiro, here’s a look at some of the most captivating venues from this summer’s tournaments.

the talk - page 84

Maracanã Stadium Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The Maracanã is arguably the most historically significant venue in the history of Brazilian sports. Officially known as Estádio Mário Filho, this stadium was initially built to act a flagship venue for the 1950. During the final match of the tournament between Brazil and Uruguay, a record 200,000 supporters filled the Maracanã to witness one of the greatest defeats that the Brazilians would experience on home soil. Throughout the years, this stadium has played host to countless events including the 2014 World Cup, as well as the upcoming Rio Olympics.

Stade Vélodrome Marseille, France Located in France’s oldest city, the Stade Vélodrome is the nation’s largest club football ground, with a capacity of 67,344 spectators. This multipurpose facility will host six of the upcoming Euro tournament’s fixtures, including one of the semi-finals. Renovations costing an estimated €267m led to the addition of a magnificent new roof, as well as 7,000 new seats to accommodate the 2016 Euro tournament. These updates have led to the promotion of the Stade Vélodrome to a “UEFA Elite Stadium”.

Olympic Aquatics Stadium Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Built as a temporary venue for the 2016 Olympic Games, Rio’s Olympic Aquatics Stadium is truly one of a kind. Built using ‘nomadic architecture’ techniques, the stadium can be easily taken apart and reassembled, without compromising the structure’s safety and stability. Furthermore, the exterior of the facility portrays a work of art, created by the renowned Brazilian artist Adriana Varejão. This magnificent artwork consists of sixty-six panels, depicting mixed imagery of the sea and angels, using baroque style.

Stade Matmut Atlantique Bordeaux, France Also known as Stade de Bordeaux, this stadium took €184m and just 26 months to build. Designed by Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron, the Stade Matmut Atlatique’s ‘floating roof’ is supported by 900 stanchions that resemble the pines of the local Landes forest. Situated between an artificial lake and the Garonne River, visitors of this venue are greeted with a spectacular natural backdrop to enjoy. The Stade will host five of the fixtures from this summer’s Euro competition.

the talk - page 86

Olympic Tennis Centre Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Located in Rio’s Barra Olympic Village, this thoughtfully designed facility was built as the official venue for the upcoming Olympic tennis tournament. The Olympic Tennis Centre consists of 17 tennis courts and over 20,000 seats, with the temporary installations contributing towards the future development of four public schools. Named after retired Brazilian tennis icon Maria Esther Bueno, the center court is an ode to the first woman to win four Grand Slam doubles titles in the same year.

Allianz Riviera Nice, France Also known as the Grand Stade de Nice, this state of the art stadium was completed in August 2013. Shortly following its inauguration, the Stade became the home of France’s National Sport Museum. This Euro 2016 venue is designed to be self-sustainable in many ways, as the stadium roof is equipped with four collection reservoirs that reuse rainwater to fertilize the pitch. The Allianz Rivera also contains 4,000 solar panels that draw over three times the energy requirements to operate the facility. This €245m is located 15 minutes from Nice’s city-centre, and is just 6 km away from the local airport.
