Season of the Witch Movie Review
What was Nicolas Cage’s character’s name? Why were they moving a witch in an old, rickety wooden cart? Does Ron Perlman really exist? These are a few of the questions that you will find yourself asking during and after you watch Season of the Witch. So much time is spent trying to tell the audience that the characters and their actions are important, but the movie ends up forgetting and outright failing at being relevant at all. No weight is given to any of the scenes or characters. The tricks that the film uses are right out of the book and you have come to know them all too well:
• The two warrior comrades: Close friends who share the stories and glories of war. • The comic-relief: Oftentimes a beggar or merchant. Looking for a way out of his desperate situation, he tags along with the two buff meat shields. • The “goth” chick: While sometimes used as sex appeal, in this movie, she is the possessed damsel in distress, as in “The Exorcist.” • The able-bodied youth: Ready and willing for the challenge of responsibility, but lack of experience and age limits respect from his colleagues. The list goes on… At the time of this writing, this movie holds a solid 4% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it certainly deserves it. It does not move us, it does not excite us, and it certainly is not memorable.
Campus Engagement Survey Seniors and freshmen will be receiving an email invitation to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) on February 1. The email will come from nsse@nssesurvey.org with a message from Provost Simpson. Kettering participates in this study—which is conducted by Indiana University—every other year and
uses the results to improve our educational program. Please follow the link and complete the survey. General information about NSSE can be found at http://www.nsse.iub.edu/. Please contact Kettering’s Office of Institutional Effectiveness at oie@kettering.edu or 810-762-9539 with specific questions.
