There’s a Club for That? By Dominic Jandrain Technician Writer The Finance Council of KSG posted a revised version of the Statement of Operating Policies on the Kettering web site earlier this term. It contains, among other things, the qualifications and guidelines for clubs that are funded by KSG. The policies clearly state that a club must advertise all events and meetings to be eligible for funding. The reasoning behind this rule is that by not advertising club meetings, clubs are depriving students the chance to participate in something that they helped fund by paying the activity fee. Although most clubs do an adequate job of advertising, many students can think of at least one club that has violated this rule at one time or another. Clubs that do not advertise events risk losing funding relating to that particular event or, if there has been no advertising at all, lose funding altogether.

The Statement of Operating Policies defines advertising as “available to the entire Kettering University population at least one week in advance of the event or meeting”. While it does not specifically state the medium of advertisement, it can be assumed that flyers, banners, and the

Kettering University Events Calendar are adequate, as long as they are available to the entire student population. In addition to the traditional means, there are quite a few other ways of advertising that are used frequently around campus. Painting the bulldog, Facebook events, and setting up tables in the Great Court or the

Pool are a few of the more popular options. However, these methods do not give all students an equal opportunity to hear about the event. Not all students have Facebook accounts, so that can be ruled out. Painting the bulldog conveys only a very basic message for a limited time, as it may be painted over within hours. Setting up tables and talking with passing students may be an efficient way of getting new members, but as with painting the bulldog, this is only a temporary way of advertising. Just to be safe, each of the above methods should be used in conjunction with banners and flyers. Clubs that choose not to advertise may be penalized. If a club does not advertise one event or meeting, it is considered a minor offense, which is punished by a denial of a funds relating to the incident. If a club does not advertise at all, it is considered a serious offense, punishable by a seizure of all funds and recommendation for removal as a recognized club.
