Movie Review: I Am Number Four

By Joe Villarosa Guest Columnist

reography shaped by wires — will be enough to satiate any action fan’s thirst, and it is done well enough that I Am Number Four is an action- viewers can definitely tell that the packed thrill-ride. The leaps are flips and spins done by John Smith death-defying and the fights are mag- and others are all done by trained nificent; unfortunately, all of that comes with a price. In order to appreciate this movie as an action movie, there are a few underlying flaws which must be ignored. The protagonist of I Am Number Four is an alien who goes by the alias John Smith (played by Alex Pettyfer), one of a race of super-human beings with powers called “Legacies.” He has what can be called “Superman Syndrome” in that he is forced to flee his home planet (in this case, to escape a race of aliens out to kill him and what little remains of his race) and journey to Earth. Much like Superman, John has inherent super-human powers, which is made apparent time and time again throughout the movie. The stunt work present in the film professionals. is certainly a step up from recent Despite this, I Am Number Four films toting skilled choreography. suffers similar failings as Percy JackThe “wire-fu”— that is, kung-fu cho-

son and Twilight; coincidentally, all of these movies are based on young adult novels of the same respective names. The movie has moments of brooding and sulky dialogue that elicited a few unintentional laughs in the theater at the time of this reporter’s viewing. Characters just do not seem to have as much gravitas as what might be expected of them, given their roles in the plot. In addition to this — and it may or may not stem from a bad translation from novel to film — John appeared to be consistently rude to his female love interest in the movie, Sarah Hart (played by Dianna Agron). Apparently, women like it when guys probe their secret lives unannounced, ask personal questions out of nowhere, and team up with a very attractive female who has more in common with the guy (as another member of his race) than with normal Earth women. To summarize, I Am Number Four is full of fun and an easy popcorn movie, but don’t expect Oscar-winning performances.
