Student Injured During Heavy Winds By Rebeccah MacKinnon Online Editor At approximately 2:30am early Saturday morning, one of the windows in Thompson Hall Lobby shattered over students who were participating in Anime Club’s annual event, Animefest. High winds, which had been sweeping through campus all day, evidently picked something up that hit the window in just the right place that it shattered. Resident Hall Director Katie Bosio gave a description of the incident to The Technician. Bosio was sleeping when the incident occurred, but was soon woken up by students looking for help. “The staff was notified immediately,” she said, commenting that some staff members heard the crash and came to investigate while others were woken up by those on the scene. A few students were injured in the incident. Most were treated on the scene by fellow students with First Aid training or by Campus Safety, who were also notified of the incident as soon as it occurred. One student was

taken to the hospital by ambulance. “He was a badass,” said Bosio of the student taken to the hospital. He was able to walk out of Thompson Hall on his own accord, talking lucidly the entire time, though he was clearly in pain. He was released from the hospital the next day. Bosio commented, “I was very impressed, by him and the rest of the students involved.” Everyone was quick to respond. The incident was handled within ten minutes. A member of the Physical Plant who was on duty overnight was called in to make a temporary solution for the broken window. He and his counterpart, who came on duty around 5am, were working to board up the window within a few hours. Custodial services cleaned up the glass over the next few days, vacuuming the rugs multiple times and taking apart the couches to make sure that no glass remained in them. However, there is still a possibility that some glass remains in the carpet. “Please keep wearing shoes in the lobby,” said Bosio. The window is currently boarded

and will remain there for an indeterminate amount of time. The glass will probably be replaced over zero section when there are less students in the dorms.

Are You Satisfied?

By Bill Mahler Director of Institutional Effectiveness

Another survey? And it’s how long? Yes, and this one’s more than 80 questions. We are very interested in students’ opinions! Although you get many other surveys, Kettering uses only one standardized survey each year. In odd-numbered years, we participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement. In even-numbered years, we use the Student Satisfaction

Inventory from Noel-Levitz Educational Consultants. The Student Satisfaction Inventory was used for the first time in 2010 and led to reports, focus groups, task forces, and improvements. For example, Campus Safety was reorganized and given new responsibilities, Cooperative Education is now part of Academic Affairs, and need-based financial aid has been expanded. The 2010 results also provide a good baseline for judging students’ reactions to all the

improvements that are coming. Stay tuned! The survey will be open from March 1 through April 18 so that students from both sections have the opportunity to respond during academic or work terms. Your personalized e-mail invitation will come from Provost Simpson via @surveys.noellevitz.com. To avoid all the reminders, just respond to the first invitation. Kettering wants to know what you think!
