Welcome to Citywing
w
e are delighted to welcome you on board your flight today and thank you for choosing Citywing. As it is the time of the year for thinking about what to do for holidaying or short breaks, I thought i would just throw you all a few ideas around our destinations. Belfast, the city has a wealth of culture, historic landmark buildings, the Titanic quarter and fantastic shopping and can also be a gateway to visit the east coast. There is some excellent scenery all the way up the causeway coastal route to the Giant’s Causeway and this route is now recognised as one of the World’s Great Road Journeys. Back in Belfast there is excellent shopping and in the evenings there may be the possibility to see top performers at the Odyssey Arena. In Blackpool, we all know of the illuminations, the Tower and the Pleasure Beach but it is also the gateway to the Lake District and the north west. there are also some world-class golfing venues in the area, the famous Lytham St Anne’s being one of them. We think there is something for everyone in the region, which is why it is one of the countries top tourist destinations. Gloucestershire airport, apart from being a short drive away from Cheltenham and Gloucester, is very close to the M5 opening up a tremendous choice of great cities to visit including Bath and Bristol. It is also less than an hour’s drive away from Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford upon Avon, as well as Warwick Castle, a must visit attraction if you have not been there before. We went to Stratford last year and my wife liked it so much we are going back there again this year!
The Isle of Man, for those who have never been before, is full of unexpected treats. The local communities are very friendly and welcoming and there are numerous excellent Manx National Heritage sites to visit as well as unspoilt countryside and coastal scenery. If you want something different, look out for the Ghost Tours, which are a thoroughly entertaining way to spend an evening. Of course there are several world-class motor racing events on the calendar so these are a great reason to visit the Island too.
feedback. We will always listen to your views whether positive or negative, it is good to praise people for delivering excellent service but it is also important to rectify any issues that may arise. As an example, we have had complaints about the background noise on the ‘”silent” movies and hopefully this has now been addressed; this was from direct feedback from you, the passenger. If you liked the service you receive we would also be grateful if you’d tell us, or more importantly, please tell your friends to come visit with us.
Jersey, another beautiful Island with a variety of things to do. It has had a fascinating history and this can be found in the local attractions. Jersey can also be used as a base for those wishing to look at some of the other Channel Islands. There are also a variety of activities to be had, which cater for all different tastes.
We hope to welcome you aboard again in the not too distant future.
Newcastle, a vibrant city with plenty to offer, there is too much to mention but there is something for everyone including brilliant shopping and top entertainment in a city that’s always buzzing. it is also a good gateway to Northumberland, which is a complete contrast to the city with its beautiful and unspoilt countryside. May I take this opportunity to thank you for supporting Citywing and hope that you have found the service met your expectations? We aim for excellence throughout the whole process, from the new website, check in, flight experience and afterwards whether it be just collecting baggage and departing the airport, to dealing with a member of the Citywing team. We are continually looking at improving the service so we would ask you to fill in the questionnaire in the seat pocket if you have time to give us

Citywing Offers Anglesey Flights For iom tt 2013.. Citywing are delighted to announce that they are running flights to and from Anglesey during TT 2013, giving Isle of Man residents the chance to take a short break to North Wales and enabling North Wales TT fans to visit the Island and experience the races for themselves.
There will be three flights from June 3rd at prices starting from just £39 including all taxes and charges, with no debit card fees.
6
Managing Director of Citywing, David Buck said: ‘We’re very pleased to be able to offer these flights for TT 2013, which will make it a lot easier for people in North Wales to visit the Isle of Man at this exciting time of year. It is also a great opportunity for Island residents to visit Anglesey and explore the beautiful landscapes and attractions of North Wales. ‘As of last year, an arrangement between Cadw – the Welsh Government’s historic environment service – and Friends of Manx National Heritage was agreed, which means members can now access sites in both countries and will hopefully encourage more people to explore the two Islands throughout the year. ‘Past flights between Anglesey and the Isle of Man have always proved incredibly popular, so offering this route at this time of year is a great step forward for the Island and its tourism industry.’ Citywing has fares starting from as low as £19.95, including all taxes and charges, all year round. Visit our website www.citywing.com for full information and to keep up to date with our latest news.

Citywing names Crossroads Care as 2013 Nominated Charity.

Citywing offers Free Early Arrival Transfers.
left to right: David Buck and Judith Musgrave (Citywing) with Jackie Betteridge and Alex Wilson (Crossroads).
Citywing are delighted to announce that they have chosen Crossroads Care as their nominated charity for 2013. The local charity is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and Citywing has provided them with 25 return Business Select tickets to use for fundraising during the year on their routes from the Island to Blackpool, Belfast, Gloucester (M5) and Newcastle. Managing Director, David Buck said: “We are very pleased to name Crossroads Care as our chosen charity for 2013 and to be able to support them in a number of ways throughout the year. This is a very dedicated and worthwhile local charity, and one that we are honoured to work alongside to raise money for, and awareness of, the life-changing services they provide. In addition to the free tickets we’ll also be calling on our partners for help with some fund raising favourites including the famous sponsored plane pull event“.
Alex Wilson, Fundraising Co-ordinator at Crossroads Care, said: ‘We are delighted to be working with Citywing as their nominated charity for 2013. As well as helping us to mark the occasion of our 25th anniversary by giving us 25 return Business Select tickets, Citywing are also showing Crossroads’ short in-flight film about carers on their Belfast, Blackpool, Newcastle and Gloucester(M5) routes, to help identify carers. ‘Funds raised help to provide those caring for a loved one with an illness or disability with a meaningful break, whilst those they care for enjoy activities, learn life skills and receive support to enter voluntary or paid employment. “‘Crossroads‘ services, including Care at Home, Young Carers, Derby House Nursery and Crossroads Community Venture Scheme, are increasingly relied upon and this year we aim to provide more care hours to more people in our community. Citywing’s support will go some way in enabling us to do this.”
If your meeting finishes earlier than expected, and you arrive early at the airport for your return flight only, you may transfer to an earlier flight on the same day as the flight booked without further charge, if it won‘t cause a delay to its departure. You must have already made an outbound flight with us and be returning from the original destination to the original point of departure. On arrival at the airport, please see our representative to find out if it will be possible to transfer. You must also observe the check-in times for the earlier flight!

David Buck says “We appreciate that our customers are busy people, and sometimes require that extra bit of flexibility to get them home earlier. Our Early Arrival Transfers enable passengers who are on their return flight to hop on the earlier flight if there‘s space, without any extra charge“

The inaugural Gloucester Tall Ships Festival was organised by Gloucester City Council and Gloucester Heritage URC in 2007 to lift the spirits of local residents following the devastating floods which hit the city and the county. The event went on to win several awards including Silver in South West Tourism’s best event category, enhancing its reputation and attracting more and more visitors to the 2009 and 2011 festivals. Commenting on the forthcoming Tall Ships Festival 2013, Chris Oldershaw, Chief Executive of Marketing Gloucester, said, “To see the magnificent tall ships moored in the city’s Historic Docks is a spectacular sight to behold and explains why the Tall Ships Festival has firmly established itself as a must-see event in the south west.” Chairman of Marketing Gloucester and Leader of Gloucester City Council, Paul James, comments, ”The Tall Ships Festival is a superb family event and a marvellous celebration of Gloucester’s maritime heritage. It’s wonderful to see this flagship event for Gloucester go from strength to strength.”

t
hink ‘Titanic‘, and a host of associations synonymous with the ill-fated ship spring to mind: tragedy, luxury, man‘s reckless pride, gaping class divides and, oddly, romance, thanks to one box-office breaking film.
After 100 years, the RMS Titanic continues to fascinate millions around the globe. The sinking of the luxury ocean liner on April 15th 1912, along with 1,514 of its passengers and crew, shook the world, catching the imagination of writers ever since with countless books and films on the subject. Titanic Belfast Museum opened last year and has been pulling in thousands of tourists since. The museum aims to impress with grandeur on a similar scale to the ill-fated ship – the building’s architecture is quite a statement as you can see opposite and below.
The Belfast Titanic Museum is not just about the loss of life, it is also a celebration of the achievements of the former designers and ship builders of Belfast. Pools of water shimmer at the base of the building next to a bold steel cutout Titanic sign. The central atrium through the entrance reveal a light and airy open plan void with more textured walls, dark and rusty in colour, juxtaposing sharply with the clean glass elevators. Many striking designs do not age well, like the grey concrete creations of the 1970s, but the Titanic Belfast Museum could easily still look fresh for the 200-year Titanic anniversary.
The exhibition starts with Belfast‘s roots as an industrial centre of the 1800s, when it was famed as the linen capital of the world, producing huge amounts, from the flax plant, right up to bed sheets for export. The city was so thriving, that its population was bigger than Belfast’s present day number. Setting the scene, superimposed life-size silhouettes are projected on to the walls, so you share the streets with the Victorian Belfast residents as they busy themselves with daily life: walking, talking, shopping, children running and playing – you’re immediately immersed in the era, before the Titanic looms into view.
Walking from room to room, you are introduced to the men who dreamt up the most luxurious ship of her time - the designers - their names, faces, backgrounds, wages, and eyewitness accounts of what they were like as managers. The pride that must have buzzed in Belfast’s ship-building docks during the Titanic’s construction appears to have lasted a century present in the museum’s care and attention in creating an exhibition that offers technical design detail, but never overwhelming the user, simply awe-inspiring at each step.
Engaging Multi-media experiences are throughout: touch-screen animations guide you through the ship‘s construction in bitesized explanations, an immersive surround animation gives you a virtual tour through the decks of the ship, and screens beneath your
>
feet take you on an underwater journey to the decaying remains in the Atlantic depths. It‘s stunning.
There are of course physical exhibits to view – recreations of a lifeboat and of the first, second and third class cabins. Surprisingly, there are no actual surviving objects from the Titanic on proud display – perhaps the curators could not justify the huge prices that the rare items fetch, for example, a Titanic menu recently made six-figures at auction. Whatever the reason, the experience is not diminished. Throughout the museum, there is deep respect for the hundreds who lost their lives - the exhibition ends with description of how the bodies were recovered, where they were buried, what White Star‘s actions were after the disaster, how relatives of the deceased reacted back home, and the many stories of the survivors.
17
Many have laid claim to the ship‘s famous history - Southampton and Queenstown (known as Cobh) were her last stops before setting off on her doomed maiden voyage, New York was her destination and Halifax was where some of the deceased were laid to rest - but Belfast deserves international acknowledgement for creating the world’s most famous ship. So why NewcastleGateshead? www.newcastlegateshead.com
You may wonder why the destination is described as NewcastleGateshead.... Newcastle (a city on the north bank of the River Tyne) and Gateshead (a town on the south bank of the River Tyne) have been transformed into a single cultural and cosmopolitan visitor destination: NewcastleGateshead (think Buda Pest). The two places are closely linked - by seven bridges across the river – and visitor attractions and events can be found on both sides.

The Isle of Man TT - A global marketing platform for sponsors. The greatest road race on earth continues to “It is especially pleasing to see the commitment from all the leading teams and manufacturers, who clearly attract the leading teams and manufacturers. TT & Motorsport Development Manager Paul Phillips commented: “Despite the global economic downturn, the Isle of Man TT has attracted an incredible entry for 2013 in all classes. It is a testament to the TT‘s enduring appeal that, while many other events are seeing their entry numbers and quality reduce, we are having to turn people away with entries oversubscribed for the majority of our races.”

TT2013 - Who to watch
with Milky Quayle
Local Legend Milky Quayle is a former TT and MGP winner. As a young lad he dreamed of taking part in the greatest road race in the world, as a man... he won it. Very few of us have the tenacity, resolve and character to fulfil our dreams, let alone the bottle to chase them in excess of 180mph. Nutter.
John McGuiness
Josh Brooks
Cameron Donald
Michael Dunlop
Conor Cummins
Michael Rutter
Gary Johnson
William Dunlop
Bruce Anstey
Guy Martin
The 2nd most successful rider of all time, still the man to beat and everyone is chasing him. If the opposition ups their game, John ups his... simple. Phenomenal.
Awesome. The Australian is riding for Wilson Craig Honda whom he‘s ridden with for the last few years. Very settled and familiar with his bike and team. Desperate to win the big title again.
Team mate to Guy Martin riding a Tyco Suzuki. Riding his first TT, making the transition from short circuit to road. If he gets to grips with the course he could be taking honours in years to come.
Youngest ever TT winner, just signed for Works Honda (TT legends). An aggressive rider and definite top 3 contender. Really gunning for the Superbike title.
24
Local Man. New bike and new team which will suit Conor as it‘s a bit bigger that the Suzuki he road last year. One of the fastest ever around the TT course.
Previous TT winner riding the Italian MV-Augusta for the mechanical genius Jack Valentine. Might be the dark horse in the 600 race with this unknown package.
A winner last year. A very laid back, almost sedated speed freak. Super fast… mature, multi race winner… if he gets out of the right side of bed he can win.
>
www.citywing.com | April / may
Another incredibly talented and experienced rider - back on the factory Honda after a few years on private teams so expect fireworks. Carrying an injury from pre-season testing so fitness might play a part.
Hailing from the smaller capacity bikes where corner speed is essential, therefore on the slower 600cc this will pay dividends. One to watch for the supersport for sure.
Desperate to win a TT, plagued with mechanical problems, more than capable of winning, just needs a bit of luck.

Why watch? Whilst we had Milky’s attention, we asked him to explain to the lay person why he refers to the Isle of Man TT as the greatest road race in the world, it’s quite a statement. “The TT is unique. It’s the fastest, hardest, longest and most dangerous road race on the planet. Why? You’re racing in excess of 200mph on public roads skimming inches away from lamposts, telephone boxes, manhole covers, hedges and pot holes... what feels like a bump at 30mph feels like Mount Everest at 200mph. Here’s a perspective; you are about to, or have just taken off with Citywing at 80mph. You will cruise through clear airspace with no obstacles at roughly 240mph. Riders now exceed 200mph, not far off what you will be travelling at... imagine that on a road just a few metres across with all the obstacles mentioned above. I can only describe it as hanging on to an Exocet Missile, cliché? No... utterly true. The mental focus required to navigate the 37 and ¾ mile Mountain Course is also exhausting. If Roger Federer loses concentration and serves long or into the net he just serves again, if we lose focus it’s game, set and match, they are no safety run off areas for miles; instant life dependent decisions have to be made every second for almost 2 hours and up to 226.5 miles. The TT is also a time trial so you’re not racing the other 40/50 riders on the start line, you literally have the track to yourself... your own personal race track, it really feels like that and it’s an amazing privilege. Flying through villages with 30mph restrictions has always felt illegal somehow! Everything is within touching distance which makes the experience intensely personal for both rider and spectator. As a spectator sport it’s unbeatable as we’re the width of a pavement or less away from you. It’s also the greatest free show in the world because you can watch wherever you want an nobody charges you a penny. It’s not sanitised like a short circuit (Silverstone, Donnington and Brands Hatch etc...) It’s real, incredibly real and it’s amazing, if you haven’t experienced the Isle of Man TT before you will be completely hooked!”
25
Now that‘s an answer.
About Milky Quayle A
fter surviving a high speed crash, Milky retired from competitive racing and is now a fiercly proud brand ambassador for the Isle of Man TT, working tirelessly to promote the event on a global stage making it the world-class event it has always been.
Professionalism and safety are naturally high on Milky’s agenda and he puts his extensive knowledge to great use by coaching newcomers on the intricacies of navigating the formidable mountain course. Milky now lives a slightly slower paced life as a family and business man, managing an innovative Smartcar Hire company he launched in 2010. For better or worse))
Ideas that changed the face of travel forever. When intrepid British traveler Freya Stark visited remote parts of the Middle East, she carried pen and paper to take notes for her subsequent books. It was the mid-1900s, so she had no GPS device, no wrinkle-free, sun-protective clothing, and no app to aid her along the way.
In the decades since, these and other clever innovations have transformed travel in ways that Stark couldn’t have imagined but that tourists now take for granted. We’ve singled out a few innovations that have made discovering the world smoother, safer, healthier, or simply more fun. Consider the digital photography revolution. There’s no more running out of film or crossing your fingers for two weeks to find out whether you got the exposure right on your holiday snaps. Now you get instant gratification of checking each shot in the moment—then sharing it immediately with friends back home through a quick upload to social media sites. E-TICKETS Airlines started issuing electronic tickets in the mid 1990’s, followed by online check-in and self-service kiosks. The paper version was “retired” by the International Air Transport Association in 2008, and the agony of a lost ticket became a relic of the past. In-Flight Entertainment Watching a movie on board elicits no neck strain with individual seatback screens— first introduced in the 1980’s, even for economy passengers In-flight Entertainment Systems keep you entertained for hours. Various channels of the latest movies, TV and music videos, and a wide selection of audio entertainment.

Mobile phone Developed in 1973, the mobile by Motorola was almost the size of a brick, but its many smaller and smarter successors have made it possible to stay in touch anywhere in the world. Since you woke up this morning, how many times have you reached for your mobile phone to perform an entire range of tasks— banking , email, texting, watching news, making a call or booking your citywing ticket? It‘s not all bad then.

IN-FLIGHT MEALS
The first boxed meal was created for Continental Airlines in 1978 by Harvey Alpert and his company, Oakfield Farms Solutions. It consisted of cheese, crackers, raisins, a chocolate bar, a napkin, and a knife, all shrink-wrapped in a wooden box—and it was free!
ONLINE TRIP ADVICE
Everyone’s a critic. With TripAdvisor, founded by Stephen Kaufer in 2000, a forum of anonymous rants and raves from fellow travelers lets you read real, unedited hotel and restaurant reviews and see candid photos. Love it or hate it, you’ve most probably used it!
FOAM EAR PLUGS. Anyone sitting near a colicky baby on a flight just had to suck it up until 1972, when the Cabot Corporation’s Ross Gardner introduced this sleep-saving tool, which expands in the ear canal to block out noise.
GPS Paper maps (which, once unfurled, never, ever got refolded properly) have been largely replaced by the Global Positioning System, which uses satellites to track where you are on earth. Developed in 1978 for the U.S. Department of Defense, it can geo-tag a photo with a GPS camera or help a rental car locate a hole-in-the-wall restaurant
DIGITAL CAMERAS Travel photography used to mean running out of film, waiting for Fotomat to develop your pictures, and finding out too late what shots you missed. In 1975, the world’s first prototype, from Eastman Kodak engineer Steve Sasson, offered the instant gratification of sharing photos when and where they were taken.
THE SMOKING BAN
United Airlines was the first carrier to offer separate smoking and nonsmoking sections in 1971, but it took 17 more years for the U.S. government to prohibit smoking on short domestic flights. Over protests from the tobacco lobby, Congress finally banned it on all flights to or from the United States in 2000.
31
An idea that won’t change anything. THE PILLOWIG Just as the name implies, this travel gadget is a fusion between a pillow and a wig. It’s a pillow that is worn on the head. The pillow is attached to a cap that fits securely around the top of the skull. Some of these fasten under the chin. You’ll definitely draw the attention of others. You can sleep in the airplane, in the airport or anywhere. However, with so many security issues going on at airports, you may find yourself in line for a special screening.
