I am delighted to say that 2013 was a good first year for Citywing, with the business matching the targets we set ourselves and operating within budget. I am excited we are in a position to expand and, as some of you will be aware, we will start scheduled services to Glasgow from the Isle of Man beginning on March 31st. We have set pricing so it is possible to do a return trip from less than £100, depending on when you book. There is also the opportunity to do day returns as well, which we hope will appeal to the business community. If the route proves to be as successful as we expect, we are in a position to add additional flights to further enhance the schedule services.

I have very fond memories of travelling to Glasgow and going north to Loch Lomond and onwards to Inverary with my wife. We did get as far as Loch Ness, but, like everyone else, we did not catch a glimpse of wee Nessie! Now I can take my children to see the wonderful sights too; maybe they will be luckier.

CITYWING NAMES MANX CANCER HELP AS 2014 NOMINATED CHARITY Citywing is delighted to announce that they have chosen Manx Cancer Help as their nominated charity for 2014. The Isle of Man-based charity recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, and Citywing has provided them with 24 return tickets to use for fundraising during the year on their routes from the Island to Blackpool, Belfast, Gloucester (M5) and Newcastle. Managing Director, David Buck said: ‘We are very pleased to name Manx Cancer Help as our chosen charity for 2014 and to be able to support them in a number of ways throughout the year. This is a very dedicated and worthwhile local charity, and one that we are honoured to work alongside to raise money for, and awareness of, the life-changing services they provide. In addition to 24 return tickets we’ll also be calling on our partners for help with a fund raising favourite, the famous sponsored plane pull event.’ Ally Martin, Fundraising Events Co-ordinator at Manx Cancer Help, said: ‘We are so pleased to be working with Citywing as their nominated charity for 2014. Funds raised help to provide support and specialist psychological services for anybody whose life has been affected by cancer, as well as a safe haven for patients and their loved ones at our drop-in centre in Cronkbourne.

Citywing Jersey Link returns for 2014 Flights to Jersey with Citywing will return in 2014, with additional frequency to meet the growing demand during the Summer months. The service, which has a short 20 minute stop at Gloucester Airport, will maintain the Isle of Man’s vital link with its Channel Islands cousin. Citywing Managing Director, David Buck said: ‘Jersey is an important business destination for the Isle of Man, as well as a wonderful place to visit for leisure. I’m delighted we are, once again, able to offer this important link throughout the summer.’ ‘It not only opens up Jersey for people here in the Island, but can also help increase the number of visitors coming here from the Channel Islands.’ ‘Our summer link between the Isle of Man and Jersey has proved popular and in 2014 we will be adding extra services in response to customer feedback.’ Bookings for the route, which will operate between May and September twice a week, are open now and available on Citywing.com

Citywing offers to help Birmingham passengers Following the news that Flybe’s direct route between Birmingham and the Isle of Man will reduce to a single midday service for the remainder of the winter season, Citywing is stepping in to ensure that those who need to get to and from the Midlands can still get morning and afternoon flights using its popular Isle of Man – Gloucester route. Any passengers who were booked to travel on the Flybe Birmingham service are being offered the opportunity to rebook onto a Citywing flight on the Isle of Man – Gloucester route for £1 less than they originally paid for their flight ticket. With regular morning and evening flights between the Island and Gloucester, Citywing is able to accommodate customers looking to travel just for a day trip as well as those looking to book for a longer holiday, without having to wait until lunchtime to start their trip. Gloucester (M5) has fast road access, free parking and just 20 minutes average checkin time. Citywing Managing Director, David Buck, said: We want to ensure that no one has to deal with the hassle of rearranging all manner of existing arrangements for their trip, or to cancel their plans to visit the Island or the Midlands entirely. Flights between Scotland and Isle of Man take off Direct airlink reinstated following First Minister’s visit to Isle of Man in July Direct flights between Glasgow and the Isle of Man are to be reinstated in Spring 2014 following discussions between First Minister Alex Salmond and IoM Chief Minister Allan Bell. Mr Salmond and Mr Bell met during a visit by the First Minister to the island last July when they pledged to work together to restore the airlink before the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Mr Salmond said: “This was a route that was too good to lose. “When we met in the summer, the Chief Minister and I made a pledge to restore these flights between First Minister Alex Salmond Scotland and the Isle of Man in time for the Commonwealth Games and both governments have worked hard together to make this happen. I’d also like to congratulate Glasgow Airport on their efforts in securing this route. “I’m pleased to say that the service will, in fact, be back up and running well before the summer as it was simply too important a connection to lose. “Next year will see special events in Scotland and the Isle of Man. The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will see a team from the Isle of Man competing and the TT race on the island is always popular. “These flights will serve as a symbol of the close historical and cultural links between Scotland and the Isle of Man, providing a boost to tourism and business on both sides of the water.” Mr Bell said: “The Isle of Man Government is pleased to have worked in partnership with the Scottish Government to help restore the important direct air link serving our two countries, as we promised to do when the First Minister visited the island in July this year. “This is good news for the Isle of Man as a centre for business and tourism, and it can only reinforce the valued social and economic connections that exist between the Scots and the Manx. We look forward to welcoming more visitors from Scotland in 2014, and to flying the Three Legs flag at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next summer.”
Amanda McMillan, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “We have been working hard to reinstate flights to the Isle of Man following the withdrawal in June of the previous service. It has always been a popular route and we are delighted that Glasgow Airport will be able to offer Scotland’s only direct service to the island. “Citywing’s nine weekly flights will safeguard Scotland’s important links with the Manx economy and perhaps more importantly, they will be operational in time for the 2014 Commonwealth Games when the Isle of Man will be one of the 70 competing countries.” Citywing Managing Director, David Buck, said: “I am delighted we have been able to restore this vital link between the two communities of the Isle of Man and Scotland. “There is a long history of business, social and cultural links between the two. It is a pleasure to introduce the direct flights from the 31st of March 2014. “The Isle of Man, like Scotland, promises a warm and friendly welcome. Similarly, we hope business passengers will find the service beneficial.“ This announcement highlights the very positive relationship between the Scottish and Isle of Man Governments. Ministers and officials work together primarily through the forum of the British Irish Council and have recently collaborated on a number of issues including the development and preservation of indigenous languages, renewable energy and education. Earlier this year, services between Edinburgh and Glasgow and the Isle of Man were ended. Scottish and Isle of Man Government officials have worked with Citywing, an Isle of Man based aircraft chartering company, to introduce the new service to Glasgow. From the end of March 2014, Citywing will operate nine return flights per week between Glasgow Airport and the Isle of Man, with a view to increasing that number as demand takes off.

Cirencester Cirencester is a must see thriving market town at the heart of the Cotswolds with ancient origins. The town was one of the most important places in Roman Britain making the Corinium Museum worth a visit. How High Can You Take Blackpool NOW? The UK’s most popular seaside resort has launched its 2014 Destination Guide – Blackpool NOW - 158m high from the very top of The Blackpool Tower. And now people across the UK and further afield are being urged to see how high they can get the Guide. “I have no doubt there will be some great entries to this competition and I am looking forward to seeing just how high we can take Blackpool NOW!” Blackpool NOW was launched from the top of The Blackpool Tower with the aid of Tower Maintenance Team Leader Paul Hulley. When Paul first started at The Tower in 1984 he was part of a team of Stickmen – the people responsible for the upkeep of the structure. Stickmen have worked on The Tower since it was built in 1894 and were responsible for the actual construction and subsequently maintenance. Today the majority of this role is carried out by independent contractors MP Marine. Paul, who celebrates his 30th year at The Tower this year, said he was delighted to be able to help launch the Guide. He said: “Nothing beats standing out on The Tower and seeing the
magnificent views over Blackpool. In with the new: 2014 in NewcastleGateshead A year of sport is set to inspire visitors to NewcastleGateshead in the same year that the world’s most iconic half-marathon, the BUPA Great North Run, celebrates its millionth runner on Tyneside.
The brand new Newcastle Traithalon will take to the starting blocks in July against the iconic backdrop of the NewcastleGateshead quayside. Combining open water swimming in the River Tyne, the route will take participants underneath the Gateshead Millennium Bridge with a quayside cycle circuit and a run that will pass by some of the destination’s most famous sights. Manx National Heritage Events

o mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War, Manx National Heritage is hosting a major pop up exhibition to examine the role of the Isle of Man in a war that claimed the lives of 16 million people across the globe. Partnering up with the Imperial War Museum the exhibition at the Manx Museum will focus on the war on land, at sea and on the Manx home front and will include artefacts from its internment camps – which were used by the British Government – as well as the battlefield grave of a Manx soldier. The exhibition will be running from February 2014 – January 2015. Admission FREE.

Support Team Isle of Man at Glasgow 2014 For Team Isle of Man, the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be as close to a ‘home’ Games as it’s possible to get. Just an hour or so away by air, there are sure to be hundreds or even thousands of Manx sports fans heading for the ‘friendly games’. The Isle of Man will be one of 71 nations competing in Glasgow between July 23 and August 3, 2014. Manx competitors will find themselves competing for medals against some of the most powerful sporting nations on earth. Among them are Britain’s home nation teams with a host of world class competitors and Olympic medallists, the might of the Australians – particularly strong in cycling, shooting, and swimming – and the legendary Kenyans who have dominated distance running for decades. On the face of it, a small Island taking on these sporting giants doesn’t seem like a fair fight – but the Isle of Man’s history in the Commonwealth Games shows clearly that the Island has always been able to punch well above its weight. At the last Games in Delhi in 2010, Team Isle of Man won two bronze medals - Mark Christian in the track cycling points race and Tim Kneale in the shooting double trap event. In 2006 in Melbourne the Isle of Man had its most successful Games ever with Mark Cavendish MBE winning gold in the track cycling scratch race and shooters Trevor Boyles and David Walton winning bronze in the team clay pigeon trap event. In fact, the Isle of Man ended the Games at the top of the table based on medals won per head of population! That’s a hard act to follow, but as the countdown to Glasgow 2014 begins in earnest hopes are high in the Team Isle of Man camp, and cycling and shooting are likely to once again provide the best medal hopes for Manx competitors.

With the 2018 Games in Australia, the relative ease of getting to Glasgow 2014 will provide many Manx sports fans with the best opportunity to cheer on their national team at the Commonwealth Games. Organising the Island’s participation in the Games is the responsibility of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association (IOMCGA). Juliet Holt, IOMCGA President, said: “The Commonwealth Games is the highest sporting stage upon which the Isle of Man can compete independently. It’s always been a very special event for the Island ever since we first sent a team to what was then then the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1958. With Glasgow being so close it may be a once in a lifetime opportunity for many sports fans, and relatives of competitors, to experience for themselves the emotion and excitement of the Commonwealth Games. Watching events on TV is great, but as with all big sports events there’s no substitute for being there in person. Ask anyone who has been to the Commonwealth Games as a competitor, official, or spectator and they will tell you of memories which will last a lifetime. For any Manx sports fan, Glasgow 2014 is a chance not to be missed and everyone involved with Team Isle of Man is looking forward to seeing lots of Manx flags waving in Glasgow this summer.”

New CEO for the Department of Economic Development
T
he Civil Service Commission has appointed Chris Corlett as Chief Executive for the Department of Economic Development. He has been the Department’s Acting Chief Executive since October 2012. Chris Corlett has been a Chief Executive in Government since March 2003, first for the Department of Trade and Industry and then for the Department of Social Care from April 2010. The Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK said: ‘I am very pleased to be able to announce this appointment. It is vital that Government works hard to grow our economy, particularly as we seek to balance Government’s budget while protecting the vulnerable in our community. ‘Economic growth can help us to minimise tax increases and reductions in services. It is therefore vital that my Department has the skilled team necessary to maximise our Island’s growth.

NYSE listing for Isle of Man Company

he Department of Economic Development has welcomed the news that the first Isle of Man company has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
Isle of Man-based international law and professional services group Cains supported Eros International, a leading global company in the Indian film entertainment industry in successfully listing its existing shares and launched an initial public offering (IPO) on the New York Stock Exchange. Minister for the Isle of Man’s Department of Economic Development John Shimmin MHK said: ‘This is a further great endorsement of the Isle of Man’s credentials as a capital markets listing centre and a testament to the quality of our commercial law firms. The fact that a well-known Indian brand has chosen to be the first to have the confidence in the Isle of Man to take it to a successful listing on the New York Stock Exchange is significant. ‘We are aware that foreign companies in some countries would favour a New York listing rather than London and it signals to others that the Isle of Man is now a successful route to doing this and therefore we hope that others will now follow.’ The Isle of Man has been a leader in providing solutions for market listings for several years for Indian and other foreign sourced listings on London’s AIM market. This is a reflection of the Isle of Man’s expertise, user friendly company law, tax neutrality and competitive cost base along with its established reputation for quality service. The Isle of Man is also a recognised jurisdiction for the listing of other major companies globally, including such other stock exchanges as Singapore, Hong Kong, Toronto, Luxemburg and Dublin.

‘ T h e s e measures will complement the high standards of customer service already offered by the small team of 12 staff and ensure that the Isle of Man continues to be the best in the world for quality and speed of registration.’ As well as managing and administering the ongoing renewals of the constantly growing number of existing aircraft on the register there are an additional two new aircraft per week being added on average. Recent additions include a VVIP Boeing 757. The staff at the Aircraft Registry worked closely with the team who were preparing the aircraft for more than two years and completed the registration process to perfectly align with the completion of the conversion and refitting work. The Isle of Man remains an important one-stop shop for global aviation business with many global corporations and high profile individuals having their aircraft assets registered and managed in the Isle of Man.

TT Triathlon returns in 2014 The TT Triathlon will return to the Isle of Man on 29th June 2014 and this year a new middle distance will be added to the already established short and long course races. The TT Triathlon is based around the famous Isle of Man TT Mountain course which has challenged some of the world’s best motorbike racers over the last 100 years. This 37.7mile circuit offers stunning views, smooth road surface and the Snaefell Mountain, after which it is named. Richard Wallace, Race director of the TT Triathlon comments: “Last year was a true battle for the competitors. Not only did they face a challenging course, but the conditions on the day made this truly an epic race. This is an island and course that has celebrated sporting excellence for over 100 years as well as guts and determination of the competitors: It is an athlete’s course and rewards those who attempt it.”
The TT Triathlon will once again be offering a short course race comprising of a 1.2mile swim, 37.7mile bike and 7mile run, as well as the long course race of a 2.4mile swim, 114 mile bike and 26.2mile run. New for 2014 will be a middle distance event comprising of a 1.2mile swim, 75mile bike and 16mile run. Races are open to individuals and relay teams.

ISLE OF MAN TO BE WELL REPRESENTED AT ICE A delegation from the Isle of Man’s e-Gaming sector is preparing to attend the ICE Totally Gaming event in London from the 4th-6th February to promote the Isle of Man as a world-class location for e-Gaming business. This year 14 private sector companies will accompany representatives from the Department of Economic Development and the Gambling Supervision Commission which will enable visitors to discuss legal, financial, data hosting, consultancy and corporate services. Howard Quayle MHK Political Member for e-Gaming, Isle of Man Government Department of Economic Development commented: ‘Our attendance at ICE is an important part of the Department’s ongoing strategy to continue expansion of this fast growing sector, which now employs around 800 people directly and represents 9% of our economy. ‘It also enables us to demonstrate the high quality of our e-Gaming sector and I am delighted that the excellent relationship that the Department enjoys

In 2013 it attracted more than 22,000 people, nine out of ten of whom were involved in the purchasing and decision making process within their company, and the event is expected to be even bigger this year. 71% of exhibitors attending are from outside the UK, and 54% of all attendees are from outside the host nation.
