Welcome to Citywing We are delighted to welcome you on board your flight today, and thank you for choosing Citywing. I am delighted to say that 2014 has started on an upbeat note for the Isle of Man with encouraging numbers of bookings on the services to and from the Island. We are also seeing very encouraging signs on the Cardiff to Anglesey service, with bookings up considerably this month. The start of the year was challenging, as we all know, with some severe weather that impacted some of the flights. If you were unfortunate enough to have been affected, we trust that the customer service you received was of a very high standard. Some of you will be aware, we started our scheduled services to Glasgow from the Isle of Man on March 31st. We have set pricing so it is possible to do a return trip from less than £100, depending on when you book. There is also the opportunity to do day returns, which we hope will appeal to the business community. If the route proves to be as successful as we expect, we are in a position to add additional flights to further enhance the scheduled services.

We are in a position to offer charter or group services to and from most airports within the United Kingdom and Ireland, at very favourable rates compared to other companies offering similar services. We can usually tailor services to meet your needs. For more details and prices email scc@citywing.com. May I take this opportunity to thank you for supporting Citywing and hope you have found the service met your expectations. We aim for excellence throughout the whole process, from the website, check in, flight experience and afterwards, whether it be just collecting baggage and departing the airport, to dealing with a member of the Citywing team. We continually strive to improve our service, so we would ask you to fill in the questionnaire in the seat pocket if you have time to give us feedback. We will always listen to your views, whether positive or negative; it is good to praise people for delivering excellent service, but it is also important to rectify any issues that may arise. We hope to welcome you aboard again in the not too distant future.

This time of the year, for me personally, brings with it many different feelings. My wife‘s mother spends all winter with us and returns to Hungary for the spring. There are, of course, the usual ‘mother-in-law‘ jokes, but the reality is we get on really well...possibly. She speaks no useful English and I know some Hungarian, but not enough. We often have conversations and when I tell my wife what we discussed, we both actually have different views on what we said. She does so much around the house it is a shock to us all when she leaves and we find these different jobs that now need doing. She really makes all of us lazy and won‘t have it any other way. She needs a purpose, which we all understand, and she is great with the children, who are both bilingual, and therefore they do not have the same issues that I do. The badminton and table tennis seasons have now finished and overall it has been a good season for the Citywing-sponsored Vikings Badminton club, with many teams promoted. Special mention must go to ladies’ teams which all won their leagues. I really love my sport and will miss the competition, however we now have the better weather to look forward to and the pleasure of walking around some of the beautiful Island. Plus, there are the holidays to look forward to. We are really looking forward to visiting Scotland in August, as well as our annual visit to see my parents who have the pleasure of living in the ‘Fens‘, the flattest lands in the UK. I don‘t take these visits for granted, and am looking forward to seeing them this forthcoming Easter period. Many of you have already liked our Facebook page and followed us on Twitter. If you haven’t yet, please do, as that is where you’ll find our most up to date information and, from time-to-time, offers.

Citywing News CROSSROADS THANK CITYWING FOR 2013 NOMINATED CHARITY SUPPORT Crossroads is thanking Citywing for its help throughout 2013, after the company nominated the organisation as its charity of the year. Crossroads’ PR and Fundraising Events Co-ordinator, Annabel Chambers, said: ‘Citywing gave our fundraising a much needed boost this year by allowing us to be its charity of the year during our 25th birthday.

6

‘The Plane Pull was hugely successful and a fun way to help a local charity. The generous donations of flights, and a whole plane for us to charter, allowed us to come up with our own innovative fundraising ideas, and the money raised is going directly to providing local carers, young and old, with a much needed break.

with just a diagnosis or accident, and Citywing has helped to make sure Crossroads is here for another 25 years to assist when caring happens to you.’

‘The broadcast of Crossroads‘ fun inflight video has proved really popular; it has allowed us to raise awareness of carers locally and to let people know there is a real chance they will become a carer in their lifetime, or that they will be cared for by a family member or loved one. Our lives can change so quickly

Managing Director of Citywing, David Buck, said: ‘We are delighted that we have been able to support Crossroads and the brilliant work that it does in the local community. We worked together on some really exciting and fun projects across 2013, and we wish the charity the best of luck for 2014 and beyond.’

CITYWING ANNOUNCES JANUARY 3FM BOARDING CALL COMPETITION WINNER Citywing is excited to announce Joan Brady Rock as the winner of its first Boarding Call competition of 2014, held in collaboration with 3FM. Joan’s eyes and ears were certainly on the prize, as 3FM fans needed to tune in and listen out for the ‘Cue to Call’ in order to be in with a chance of winning two return tickets with Citywing. The Boarding Call competition runs during the last week of every month on the 3FM Breakfast Show with Kevin Ford – when listeners hear the Cue to Call, this is their prompt to text the station to be put into the prize draw for the month. Joan said: ‘I’m delighted to have won this competition and to receive such a fantastic prize. I’m now looking forward to a much-needed break away, at least once I’ve decided which of Citywing’s many destinations I’d like to go to!’ Managing Director of Citywing, David Buck, said: ‘We are really pleased to be able to award Joan with her prize of two return Citywing tickets. Whether she chooses to visit Newcastle, Gloucester, Belfast, Blackpool, or even Scotland thanks to our new Glasgow route, we hope that she has a brilliant time! If you fancy your chances at winning the next Boarding Call competition, keep your ears open and stay tuned to 3FM.’

FEBRUARY BRINGS RECORD BOOKINGS FOR CITYWING Citywing is celebrating a successful start to 2014, with February seeing a record number of bookings made with the company for the year ahead. Citywing Managing Director David Buck said: ‘We are pleased and encouraged that, just over one year on since Citywing launched, we continue to receive such high numbers of bookings and hopefully the rest of the year will exceed expectations. We’re very grateful to our customers for their continuing support and will continue to work to develop new business and leisure visitors for the Island.’ The first quarter of 2014 has proved to be a busy one for Citywing. As well as taking a record number of bookings, the company has been busy preparing for the launch of its new Glasgow route, with flights to and from the city available from 31st of March 2014. Citywing also attended travel shows in Gloucester and Blackpool in January, showcasing what the Isle of Man has to offer in order to promote the Island as a potential destination for tourists. The company has announced that it will offer additional flights for TT 2014 to and from Glasgow, Belfast, Blackpool and Gloucester, with prices starting from £49.95 including taxes and charges. David Buck continued: ‘Our TT offer flights were a huge hit last year, and we are delighted to help even more fans get to the 2014 festival. As always, we would recommend that customers book these flights, as well as their accommodation, as early as possible so as to avoid disappointment.’

Phil said: ‘I am enjoying my work with Citywing and am really excited about my new role. Marketing Gloucester developing HeritageWalking Tours App to make City’s History more accessible to tourists Marketing Gloucester is developing a new Heritage Walking Tours app to enable tourists to uncover more of the city’s hidden historical gems when they visit. With a choice of three different tours to choose from, the new app will feature attractive images, a brief history and interesting facts, designed to appeal to a wide audience of smart phone users. To enhance the visitor experience, the app will highlight any festivals and events taking place and it will include suggestions on places to eat and drink nearby, to promote local businesses. The project is expected to take six months to complete and Marketing Gloucester is planning to launch the app in the summer.

10

The three tours available on the app will be a city centre tour, a maritime and industrial heritage tour of the Historic Docks and a tour of Gloucester’s religious buildings. The new app will be free and universally available across all smart phones with a web browser. Chairman of Marketing Gloucester and Leader of Gloucester City Council, Paul James, comments:

”Heritage is key to Gloucester’s tourism offer and as a proud city with over 2000 years of history, it’s

important to ensure that we engage with visitors to make their visit memorable. I’m delighted that the new app is being developed by a local Gloucester-based company and that the tours will include details of local events and handy suggestions on nearby cafes and restaurants.”

‘A new way to become a true Cotswolds Discoverer’ Coinciding with the start of English Tourism Week, the Cotswolds plans to launch a new way of encouraging more visitors to use public transport to both get to, and around, this famous UK tourism hotspot. The Cotswolds Discoverer pass is an eco-friendly, integrated bus and rail ticket that provides unlimited travel to and around the region with participating operators. Aimed at giving visitors even more options for a day out or short break in the Cotswolds, the oneday or three-day passes are also great value for money - offering unlimited travel to a wide range of some of the finest attractions, towns, villages, gardens, and historic buildings in England. The Cotswolds Discoverer was first tested as a pilot scheme in April 2012, and following its success the new 2014 scheme will be launched at Moretonin-Marsh railway station on the eve of the start of English Tourism Week on Friday, March 28th. The Discoverer pass - which is valid seven days a week, (excluding rail services before 8.50am Monday-to-Friday) - can be bought at any UK rail station and on the participating bus services.

One day pass prices are £10 for adults; three-day passes are £25. Reductions are available with Railcards, and the passes are half price for children under 16. Further information can be found online at: escapetothecotswolds.org.uk/discoverer. It was established to encourage more sustainable travel to and around the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and reduce the reliance on the car. It also builds on the Explore the Cotswolds by Public Transport guide that the Conservation Board has produced for several years. To make it easier for people to use the pass to plan their trip, a number of itineraries have been compiled, and are available on the website.

11

Promotional leaflets will be printed shortly and distributed to railway stations and Visitor Information Centres throughout the Cotswolds. For further information, including accommodation in The Cotswolds, visit cotswolds.com.

Bushy‘s have previously brewed ales to benefit the RNLI and the TT Marshalls Association and as before 10 pence of every pint bought goes towards the charity. Ask any TT regular or local where the main focus of evening entertainment happens and the answer will undoubtedly be Bushy‘s on Douglas Promenade. This year marks Bushy‘s 30th anniversary of what has evolved at the TT festival, marking 14 years in the pub (next to the clock) where it all started and 16 years in the tent over the road where it has continued since the pub‘s closure in 1998. Despite the authorities moving the official entertainment away from its traditional (and spiritual) home alongside the Bushy‘s Tent in 2007, Bushy‘s continues to thrive with its tried and tested formula of live music combined with bike themed ales (Piston Brew and Shuttleworth Snap) fun and games that bikers and locals want to see amid a cracking atmosphere, which has always been provided at no cost to tax or ratepayer. Bushy‘s are proud to brew the largest range of real ales on the IOM featuring a wide range of styles which include hoppy IPA‘s, subtle Milds, rich Stouts and everything in between. There are exciting new brews planned over the coming year and the team are raring to go. The island is recognised as a beer lovers paradise, emphasised in the IOM Pure Beer Act of 1874 which prohibits the use of inferior ingredients in brewing beer and actually goes on to name a specific list of banned products which includes Nux Vomica,Guinea Pepper, Grains of Paradise and even Opium - those Victorians eh?

Cardiff condensed. Cardiff is Wales’ capital city and Europe’s youngest capital. This Roman-founded settlement is now one of Britain’s liveliest cities, home to world-class sporting and cultural venues, historic attractions, and everyone’s favourite time-travelling Doctor. Top attractions

Arts and culture

Eating and drinking

Music and nightlife

In the heart of Cardiff’s compact city centre lies Cardiff Castle. Its walls and fairytale towers conceal over 2,000 years of history, kick-started by the Romans — the first to build a fort on the site. The National Museum Cardiff houses Wales’ national archaeology, geology and natural history collections, as well as one of Europe’s finest art collections. In addition, the Wales Millennium Centre is one of the most varied and lively performing arts centres in Europe. There are also plenty of other things to do in Cardiff Bay. Just 5 minutes from the city centre is the chic Mermaid Quay — the perfect place to refuel after a busy day of sightseeing, or to relax with a romantic meal on the waterfront. Whisky fans will love Penderyn Distillery — the only distillery in Wales and one of the smallest in the world. And if you find yourself in Cardiff in September, be sure to sniff out the Great British Cheese Festival, where you’ll find over 450 amazing British cheeses to try, taste and buy.

Sport

When it comes to sport, Cardiff is a champion. The world-famous Millennium Stadium is the home of Welsh rugby and football and is also the regular venue for the British Speedway Grand Prix. At Cardiff City Stadium you can watch Cardiff City F.C. — the most supported football club in Wales — or head to the SWALEC Stadium to see Glamorgan Cricket Club in action. And if golf is your game, don’t miss your chance to follow in the footsteps of the Ryder Cup pros at The Celtic Manor Resort.

Shopping

Don’t miss the city’s 6 Victorian and Edwardian shopping arcades, which you’ll find in the Castle Quarter and Morgan Quarter. Keep your eyes peeled for Spillers Records, the oldest record shop in the world. If high street and designer names are more your thing, head to St David’s – Dewi Saint, the Capitol Shopping Centre and Queen’s Arcade. Our top shopping tip; bring your own bags with you, as there’s a 5p bag charge for carrier bags in Wales.

Cardiff Castle

Cardiff is a hugely creative city with a vibrant cultural scene. Traditionalists will love St David’s Hall, the national concert hall of Wales and home of the Welsh Proms. At the Wales Millennium Centre you can catch the Welsh National Opera and The BBC National Orchestra of Wales, but don’t miss the free lunchtime concerts in the foyer. For something different, visit the Norwegian Church. Author Roald Dahl was christened here, and it’s now a renowned cultural venue, hosting events from live music to workshops and classes. If you think Cardiff is lively by day, you’re in for a treat when the sun goes down. The city’s nightlife scene centres around the pub-lined St. Mary Street in the heart of the city, the chic waterfront Cardiff Bay bars, and the large and lively venues around Greyfriars. You’ll find live music in the city every night of the week at venues like Barfly, Clwb Ifor Bach and the Coal Exchange.

For families

If you’ve got Doctor Who fans in the family, you’re in for a treat. Cardiff is the home of the sci-fi series, and the Doctor Who Experience is a must for any fan. This interactive journey through the Doctor’s world gives you a chance to fly the Tardis and come face to face with Daleks. For more hands-on family fun, head to Techniquest — a Science Discovery Centre that’s home to a planetarium, science theatre and a discovery room, covering topics from fossils to forensic science.

History and heritage

If Wales is the ‘Land of Castles’, Cardiff must be ‘Castle Capital’. As well as the magnificent Cardiff Castle, the area is home to the fairy-tale Castell Coch, Twmpath Castle, Llandaff Bishop‘s Palace and Saint Fagan’s Castle. Welsh Castles have a long and fascinating history which features the Romans, Vikings and Normans. Uncover the full tale of Castles in Wales at The Cardiff Story – a free museum that tells the story of the city through the eyes of its people.

Celebrating the Island’s cultural past and future potential

Words | Michael Lees Director, Island of Culture 2014

The Isle of Man, with its compelling mix of heritage, history and natural beauty, has long provided a rich source of artistic inspiration. It is against this background that in 2014 we are celebrating our cultural past and future potential. Island of Culture 2014 is showcasing the Isle of Man as a nation embracing culture and the arts in all its diversity; a people who are challenging and creative, noted for independent thinking, receptive to the new and respectful of the traditional. This year we salute not only the many and varied cultural activities that take place yearround in town and villages across the Island but also welcome artists and performers from the UK and beyond to our shores to share in our celebrations. We chose 2014 primarily because it comes at the end of the Isle of Man Art Council’s 10-year strategy to develop a resilient and aspirational longterm future for the arts in the Isle of Man. But this year is also

one to be celebrated in that it marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest Manx artists, Archibald Knox, a towering figure in the British Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts movements whose work is sought after internationally to this day and who has done much to promote the Isle of Man to a global audience.

The aim of Island of Culture 2014 is, however, far more nuanced than simply to celebrate the Island’s cultural and artistic life. It is about bringing communities together, promoting civic pride, galvanising imagination and creativity, encouraging social integration and recognising the transformational change a year of culture can bring.

21

2014 is also the centenary of the beginning of the First World War. It is therefore fitting that Island of Culture 2014 serve as a means to commemorate this most significant of milestones in world history and honour all those who lost their lives in the Great War - among them many brave Manx men and women.

This will be a year not only to nurture young artistic talent but also provide opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to become involved and share in the Island’s vibrant cultural scene. To this end our programme for the year will see the return to their home shores of our cultural youth ambassadors: blues guitarist These two events may be worlds Davy Knowles, currently working apart but in their very different in America, dancer Lloyd Mayor, ways provide an opportunity now performing with New to inspire cultural and artistic York’s Martha Graham Dance expression and, in so doing, Company, and principal trumpet enrich our programme for Island with the London Philharmonia of Culture 2014. “Importantly, Island of Culture 2014 will have a life that extends far beyond December 31st.“ It will serve to rekindle in some and awaken in others an interest in the arts, especially among our young people, enhancing their academic performance and perhaps setting them on new and exciting career pathways. It will also see the bursaries founded help realise the potential of some of our most talented youth, while many of the events launched this year will become an annual fixture in the Island’s cultural life.

And Island of Culture 2014 can be a springboard to economic success, with the power to benefit the Manx economy, encourage greater numbers of visitors to our shores and alert a wider audience to the attractions and investment opportunities the Isle of Man has to offer. Simply put, Island of Culture 2014 will create a lasting legacy. This is the year we tell our story to the world. Michael Lees Director, Island of Culture 2014

Michael Lees | Director - Island of Culture 2014

2014 is the year in which we focus on and celebrate the richness of our Island’s culture. What is our culture? Our culture means different things to different people. For some it leans towards the traditional, the legacy passed down from our Celtic and Viking forebears. It is the language we almost lost which is now being revived or 1000 years of parliamentary history living on in Tynwald. It is our music and dance, art and design influenced by earlier generations and built upon by today’s lively and vibrant choirs, bands, groups and individuals. For others it is found in more contemporary works, influenced by modern technology which has opened up new avenues for creativity: film, video, animation, pop music, art installations, modern dance, community art works and live streaming of events from beyond our shores are all part of our cultural scene. It is about taking pride in those from our island whose

brilliance in a variety of cultural fields has gained them international recognition and who, in turn, inspire us to develop our own talents. It is opening up our minds to try and understand what we find challenging in the works of some artists, writers or poets. It is exploring the creativity which is latent in all of us. It may be reflected in the enjoyment derived by all the people in our choral societies, orchestras and brass bands, our historical, literary, art and theatrical groups who add so much to the social fabric of our Island. Our culture is embodied in the community spirit of the large number of volunteers who encourage and support both young and old in participation in the arts, for their own enjoyment and for the entertainment of others. Our culture is for everyone and everyone is a part of it. It is who we are.’ The Hon Clare Christian | Patron

‘The Isle of Man has always been very special to me. My mother, Audrey, was born and grew up in Douglas, (the island’s capital). As a child, I would come to the Island every summer, staying at my grandparents’ house and then later in the flat which we owned in Port Erin, in the south of the island. The first car I ever drove was one of the go-karts at a local pleasure park; the first disco I ever went to was while living in the island, as was the first rock gig – Showaddywaddy; the first pet I ever had was a Manx cat named Spaldrick; the first steam train I ever saw was when while I Iived there and the first - and indeed only - mountain I ever climbed was Snaefell. (The island’s only mountain). ‘One of the great treats of our summer holidays was going to Douglas for a regular family outing to the cinema. We saw Bond movies, Indiana Jones movies, even a revival of the 1935 George Formby perennial No Limit. At the time, as a young cinema-lover, I had no idea that the island would become such a hive of film-making activity, producing some of my favourite movies of recent years, ranging from the

gripping psychological thriller The Disappearance of Alice Creed to the nailbiting documentary Closer To the Edge (TT3D) In recent years, my visits to the island have combined business with pleasure; covering the premiere of Me and Orson Welles, much of which was filmed at the beautiful Gaiety Theatre, and reporting from Peel Castle and the Manx Museum for The Culture Show. A few years ago, I was thrilled to be able to play a tape of my grandfather reading the poetry of TE Brown on the Radio Four programme ‘With Great Pleasure’, the sound of his voice taking me right back to my own childhood. Today, I take my own children to the island to experience its unique mixture of beautiful scenery, living history, and vibrant culture. I am very proud of my association with the Isle of Man and honoured to be part of this celebration of its art and heritage which is such an important part of all our lives.’ Mark Kermode | Patron 23

With the stunning entry assembled for the 2014 Isle of Man TT Races, fuelled by Monster Energy, the excitement and anticipation is set to increase as the start numbers are now confirmed for the 1000cc solo classes. 2014 will again see riders in numbers 1-20 being seeded and it’s a top twenty packed with established race winners, regular front runners and exciting new talent. After taking number three last year to honour Joey Dunlop’s first TT win for Honda, twenty-times TT winner John McGuinness will revert back to number one on the grid, with the Morecambe Missile having won races in 2011 and 2012 starting from the head of the field. The experienced Honda Racing rider will be expected to use the advantage of the clear road to try and break the chasing pack. Ten seconds behind will be the man who shadowed him for much of last year’s PokerStars Senior Race, James Hillier, and having lapped in the 131mph bracket to become the fifth fastest rider ever, the Quattro Plant Muc-Off Kawasaki rider knows he’ll have to do more of the same and with McGuinness ahead on the road he’ll have no better target.

24

Michael Dunlop

Number three will, arguably, be the most celebrated rider at TT2014 with Ian Hutchinson, the five-time winner of 2010, returning to a hero’s welcome. The Milwaukee Yamaha rider has been to hell and back since that achieving that magnificent feat and will be determined to get back to winning ways immediately. He’ll be pushing for his ninth TT race win with his first chance in the Dainese Superbike Race but behind him is a man challenging for his first with Guy Martin, as in 2013, heading off at number four. It’s also the fourth year he’s been with Hector and Philip Neill’s Tyco Suzuki squad so could 2014 finally be the year?

>

WWW.CITYWING.COM | APRIL / MAY 2014

The potential race winners come thick and fast though with the next ones to set off down Bray Hill being Bruce Anstey, Michael Dunlop and Gary Johnson. Dunlop, of course, almost swept the board in 2013, taking four race wins and a second place, but now he‘s made the switch to the BMW Motorrad/Hawk Racing team all eyes will be on him to see if he can continue his winning spree. Anstey, now the second fastest rider ever, can never be ruled out and although he failed to add to his nine wins last year, he was on the pace and is still determined to take his first Superbike Race win. Likewise Johnson, who challenged for the lead in the early stages of both the Superbike and Senior Races in 2013 before technical gremlins intervened, will be looking for his first ‚big bike‘ win. William Dunlop has made the move to the Tyco Suzuki team and gets his first 1000cc top ten start at 8 while the top ten is completed by Michael Rutter and local hero Conor Cummins, the latter looking to replicate his 2010 form when he led the Superbike Race for four laps. Now part of the Honda Racing squad, all of his rivals know he’s one to watch. Dan Stewart, carrying the number 11 plate, will again be looking to get the SMT / Wilcock Consulting machines in amongst the factory riders while a strong lower order threat comes from number 12 in the shape of Dean Harrison. Now approaching his fourth year at the TT, Harrison is expected to be challenging for race wins on the RC Express Racing by MSS Performance Kawasaki.

nother exciting youngster, Lee Johnston, the reigning TT Privateer’s Champion, can be found at number 13 and is expected to make further strides forward while arguably one of the most exciting riders at TT2014 can be found at number 14 – Josh Brookes. Now riding for Milwaukee Yamaha, the Australian rider became the fastest ever newcomer last year when he set a scorching lap of 127.726mph, beating Steve Plater‘s six year mark, and many are predicting a130mph lap and possible podium for the BSB star this time around. Leading privateers Steve Mercer (15), David Johnson (16) and Dan Kneen (17) will be hoping to keep Brookes in their sights with Simon Andrews (18) looking for a strong run on Rico Penzkofer’s BMW. The recent news that Cameron Donald will be back at the TT sees the double winner line up at number 19 on the Norton, echoing Steve Hislop‘s stunning 1992 race victory, meaning that there are three Australians in the top twenty. The final seeded rider, completing the top twenty, will be Ben Wylie, winner of the 2009 Newcomers Trophy.

Outside the top 20, race order will again be determined by qualifying times but numbers to look out for include Ryan Farquhar who has opted to take his usual number 77, which indicates he’ll be looking more for enjoyable rides rather than being in the competitive mix, and the returning American Jimmy Moore, riding again for East Coast Construction, at number 21.

25

Jamie Hamilton, now riding for Wilson Craig Racing, will have the number 26 plate with Horst Saiger, who was second fastest newcomer behind Brookes in 2013, taking 28 while Ivan Lintin, contesting the 1000cc races for the first time, will have number 37 adorning the Taylor Lindsey Racing Honda’s. The newcomers are spread out through the entry list with Martin Jessopp and Peter Hickman taking their regular British Superbike numbers of 40 and 60 respectively. Others to look out for include former Grand Prix regular Danny Webb (66), Canadian ace Dan Kruger (71) and leading IRRC riders Vick de Cooremeter (92) and Laurent Hoffmann (93). The RL 360° Superstock entry sees most of the riders given the same numbers although Hutchinson, Brookes and Donald have all decided not to take part which will see riders below them moving up the grid. A number will also be in different livery including McGuinness (Padgetts Motorcycles), Michael Dunlop (MD Racing) and Cummins (RAF Reserves Racing).

Glasgow also enjoys an enviable reputation as a centre of dining excellence, described by travel bible Lonely Planet as ‘the best and most eclectic dining city in Europe.’ With a cosmopolitan café culture by day, and a vibrant, burgeoning restaurant scene that comes alive at night, there is one restaurant for every 1,000 Glaswegians and new restaurants are opening every week. Emerging cool quarter, Finnieston is buzzing with bars and restaurants. Highlights include new openings The Gannet and Old Salty’s, seafood restaurant The Crabshakk, cocktail bar The Kelvingrove Cafe, and The Ben Nevis whisky bar housing one of the finest selections of the ‘water of life’ in the city. Barcelona has Gaudí, Chicago has Frank Lloyd Wright, and Glasgow has the Art Nouveau magic of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh’s innovative and influential style can be seen throughout the city, including the much-lauded Glasgow School of Art, widely recognised as Mackintosh’s greatest architectural achievement and voted by the Royal Institute of British Architects as the finest building designed by a British architect in the last 175 years – complementing the city’s wealth of outstanding, historic architecture.

As a UNESCO City of Music, Glasgow’s emergence as a major music city is thanks to our enviable events programme and multimillion pound investment in new infrastructure, such as the £130 million SSE Hydro, which will host a clutch of international music mega-stars this year including Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Eric Clapton and Miley Cyrus, such is Glasgow’s appeal. As Scotland’s new home of live entertainment, the SSE Hydro will also be the principal venue for Glasgow’s hosting of the MTV European Music Awards in November 2014 and with its ambition to attract one million visitors annually across 140 different events, it is expected to be in the top five indoor entertainment venues in the world alongside the likes of London’s O2 Arena and Madison Square Gardens in New York. The 2014 Commonwealth Games with an expected global audience of 1.5 billion - will see over a million visitors from across 70 nations around the world descend for the greatest ever showcasing of Glasgow’s sporting and cultural credentials to a global audience. Oriel Ynys Môn celebrates its unique art collection and a major new donation The work of some of Anglesey’s most gifted home-grown artists is being celebrated at Oriel Ynys Môn as part of a special new exhibition. The Anglesey art gallery and museum has received an exciting new collection of more than 30 paintings by the late Harry Hughes Williams, a talented and passionate painter of the North Wales landscape. The collection was generously donated by the artist’s family and many of the paintings will be on display until September 7th 2014, as part of the Celebrating Anglesey Art exhibition. Born at Clai Mawr Farm, Pentraeth in 1892 and brought up at Mynydd Mwyn Farm, Llandrygarn, Harry Hughes Williams was left with a permanent disability after suffering a broken hip at the age of 11 after falling from a building and concealing his injury.

In 1911, he began three years of study at the Liverpool City of Art, before winning a scholarship to The Royal College, London. Here he won a European travelling scholarship, which he was unable to undertake due to the outbreak of war. He returned to his native Anglesey, making a studio of one of the farm granaries.

He first exhibited at The Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy in 1918, becoming an Associate by election in 1921. In 1938 he took up the post of art master at Llangefni Grammar School. The exhibition of his work was not limited, however, to the Royal Cambrian Academy, where he became a full member in 1938. His work featured in the 1948 exhibition Paintings and Drawings by Welsh Artists at the Hugo Lang Gallery in Liverpool. Then, a year later, he secured a

one man exhibition at Gladwells Fine Art Dealers, London, and in 1951 he exhibited ‘The Window’ at the annual Paris Salon and ‘La Maison du Paintre’ in La Revue Moderne. He died tragically in 1953, aged 61, when he fell from the steps of a granary at Mynydd Mwyn Farm.

Pat West, the Isle of Anglesey Council’s Principal Officer for Museums, Culture and Archives, said: “Oriel Ynys Mon, the main centre of the Anglesey Museums and Culture Service, are very grateful to the family of Harry Hughes Williams, for their generosity in donating this wonderful collection of work to further enrich the Anglesey Art collection.”

29

His striking paintings, which include farms, agricultural landscapes and windmills, are joined by those of internationally renowned Sir Kyffin Williams and Charles Tunnicliffe, and also the lesser known but very talented sisters Edith and Gwenddolen Massey, who recorded native species of flowers and plants on Anglesey in over 500 watercolour paintings. While the sisters’ paintings remain, sadly many of the plants themselves can no longer be found locally - a fact which emphasises the importance of the painstaking studies of the Massey sisters. Pat West added: “This very special exhibition aims to showcase some of the extraordinary artistic talent that is nurtured here on Anglesey and to display more of this unique historical art collection.”

Celton Manx sponsors Easter Festival of Running

T

he Easter Festival of Running is to be sponsored for the second successive year by Celton Manx.

The three-day festival opens on Good Friday April 18th in Port Erin, moves to Peel on the Saturday and to Douglas promenade on Easter Sunday.

Organising team member Chris Quine said: ‘The festival is now in its 52nd year and, of late, has been enjoying something of a revival, with around 300 entrants taking part last year. ‘The festival’s open to all abilities, whether you’re a novice or an accomplished runner, and there’s a £4000 prize fund to be won. It’s as much a social event as it is a running festival, though, as it attracts not only local competitors but also a good number of entries from across the British Isles, so in this respect the festival brings a boost to the Manx economy.

community sporting event, so complements our programme of investing in those initiatives that offer the broadest appeal and opportunities to support personal endeavour.

‘The festival is a fantastic three days of running and socialising. Even if you haven’t put on a pair of running shoes for ages, I’d recommend you take up the challenge, sign up and have a go.’

‘In addition, the festival being open to runners at all levels is of particular interest to us at Celton Manx as we will be entering a truly multi-national team, including representatives from Malaysia, Indonesia… and Peel.’

Celton Manx executive director Bill Mummery said: ‘The Easter Festival of Running is very much a

Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK commented:

‘I have enjoyed my time living on the Isle of Man and will remember my team in the Aircraft Registry and many friends and colleagues on the Island with great fondness.’

‘I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Department to thank Hartley for his hard work and dedication to the Isle of Man.

The Department has already started the recruitment process for a new Director.

‘Since taking over as Director, Hartley has ensured the continuation of the Isle of Man Aircraft Registry’s success and high standards, which have enabled the Isle of Man to become a world leader in the provision of aviation services. ‘While we will be sad to see Hartley depart his role as Director of Civil Aviation, he leaves the Aircraft Registry in a very healthy state which under his leadership has

The Minister continued: ‘The new Director will have the benefit of joining a fast-growing registry that it is widely regarded as the best corporate aircraft registry in the world. With the recruitment of further staff due and a new IT system being implemented, this demonstrates the Department remains committed to ensuring that the Isle of Man remains a world leader in aircraft registration and aviation services.’

Business Review Department’s efforts boosting TT and Festival of Motorcycling Figures from the Isle of Man Treasury have demonstrated that the Department of Economic Development’s improved marketing programme for the TT and Festival of Motorcycling has significantly benefited the economy and the taxpayer over the past 4 years, with further growth expected in 2014. The 2013 Treasury study into the two events revealed that between 2009 and 2013 there was additional benefit from: Growth of 33% in visitor numbers by 13,000 from 39,900 to 52,900 visitors.* Growth of 35% in economic benefit to the local economy from £17.1million to £24.9million.* Growth of 46% in exchequer benefits from £3.08million to £4.5million.* The 13,000 additional visitors alone represented an additional £5.9million fiscal contribution to the local economy and a £1.42million incremental exchequer benefit.*

36

The improved marketing programme up to 2013 was funded by a one-off £412,000 amount from the Marketing Initiatives Fund and was used to fund activities such as a greater number of press visits and attendance at more promotional events. The Department will continue to invest in the TT and Festival of Motorcycling to ensure that the benefit from both events continues to grow. Additionally, early analysis of the 2014 Isle of Man Steam Packet Company bookings last November revealed that there was a near 4% increase in motorcycles for this year's TT compared with the same period in 2013, while forward bookings for the Festival of Motorcycling were ahead of last year’s. Minister for Economic Development John Shimmin MHK commented: ‘These figures clearly demonstrate the value of the improved marketing programme we have put in place combined with the efforts of both the

Motorsport team and the broader road racing community. ‘We have renewed the TT TV contract - which includes the Classic TT Races - with North One Television which has been responsible for enabling the TV audience for the TT to grow from 8.1 million in 2010 to 24.4 million in 2013 (source: actual viewing figures, Kantar Sport Report 2013) with coverage evolving over this time from showing pure road racing to a more inclusive sports entertainment format. ‘We have also provided further information about the exciting entertainment programme we intend to provide for the 2014 TT Festival. ‘My Department is already focusing on ambitious plans for both festivals in order to enhance their economic value for both the taxpayer and the broader economy and I am looking forward to working with all concerned to drive ahead with these.’

Festival of Motorcycling Statistics An estimated 13,407 visitors came to the Island for the Festival in 2013, an increase of 50% on the estimate of 8,915 who came for the Manx Grand Prix in 2009. On average, they stayed in the Island for 7 nights and spent £624 per head on the trip – a total of £8.4 million.

MEDIA COVERAGE 1. TT Equivalent Advertising Value (EAV) - £3,130,000 in 2013 Increase of £720,000 (30%) from £2,410,000 in 2010) 2. FOM EAV (*estimate) - £400,000 in 2013 (Increase of £150,000 (60%) from £250,000 estimate in 2010) *Estimated figures based on O’Leary Analytics study into TT and FOM 2013 global print media coverage **In 2013 the market research firm Opinium were commissioned to survey 2,000 UK adults and 600 High Net Worth Individuals and professionals. The survey found the TT created far more awareness of the IOM than any other event or news item in the previous 18 months.

ONLINE The official iomtt.com website, run by Isle of Man based Duke Marketing, recorded over 1 million unique users during the two weeks of qualifying and racing. This compares positively with same period in 2012, which saw just under 800,000 unique users. The website’s live timing service (TT Live) was accessed by around 200,000 fans across the world.

Local firms helping Isle of Man students aim high L ocal firms from the Island’s aerospace and space sectors are helping to propel Manx students towards a future career in engineering by supporting their entry to a prestigious rocket-building competition.

RLC Ronaldsway, Swagelok, SES, Cavendish Trust, Carrick Consulting and ManSat have each agreed to sponsor a team of secondary school students to participate in the UK Aerospace Youth Rocketry Challenge. This is the largest model rocket showcase in the UK and is run with the aim of inspiring students to enter the world of aerospace and science. Teams compete in regional heats with winners going through to a UK national competition. Howard Quayle MHK, the Department’s Political Member with responsibility for the Space sector said: ‘The job prospects in the Isle of Man for skilled engineers are excellent: the industry is creating 80 new jobs a year and so the potential for the Island’s young people in this high-tech industry is very exciting. I am delighted that local businesses are supporting the next generation of potential engineers and scientists in this way to take part in this innovative competiton. ‘I am sure the students involved will benefit not only from taking part in such a highly technical challenge but also by

gaining valuable insight into the opportunities the aerospace and space sectors can offer right here on their doorstep. ‘The Department supports other initiatives to develop future engineers such as the Awareness of Careers in Engineering (ACE) Project and will shortly be inviting admissions for an expanded Foundation Apprenticeship in Engineering Programme at the Isle of Man College of Further and Higher Education. This September’s intake will be double last year’s with places for 36 students available.’ The top prize in the Challenge is the opportunity to compete in an international fly-off at the world-famous Farnborough International Air Show against winning students from America and France, plus an all-expenses paid aerospace trip to Paris and Toulouse and a £1,000 cash prize for their school. The five Isle of Man teams – three from St Ninian’s High School and one each from Ballakermeen and Castle Rushen High Schools – are challenged to build a rocket that will safely launch and return to earth two raw hen’s eggs within strict height, time and weight conditions. The technical, teamwork and business demands of the task are designed to encourage the students to work together in the same way that aeronautical engineers and other space scientists are required to do.

He is working alongside Chris Byrne – General Manager (formally of Island Aviation) who has specialized in handling Corporate flights on the Island for 27 years and over 40

years in the industry. Myself and my Business Partner, Sarah Turner will oversee and continuously update our database and develop our new concept, IOM Charter Club, bringing people together to combine flights and reduce costs.“ Rendezvous Sky have teamed up with European corporate airline World Executive Airways, who have based a luxurious Super King Air at Ronaldsway Airport. The airline’s Managing Director, Jonathan Gordon, (who is Manx and whose daughter is an aviation lawyer practicing on the Island) said: “We have been looking for the right opportunity on the Island since 2008 and feel that teaming up with Rendezvous is the perfect fit. Rendezvous will book the aircraft and escort passengers through their lounges and we then take over and deliver clients in style in their chosen executive aircraft. Being based on the Island will allow clients all the advantages of corporate air travel but without the additional cost of the aircraft having to position to Ronaldsway first.“ For all enquiries contact David on 07624 487620 or email: david@rendezvoussky.com

Citywing - Quality and Inspiration! For some authors travelling is just a chore, the boring part between leaving home and being at an exciting event. But for children’s author Robert Bullock the comfortable journey with Citywing can even inspire him! “I love looking at the characters you meet whilst travelling,” explains Robert, the author of the Noah Ramsbottom and Sam Marsh books, “you could say that I’m a people watcher, I suppose a lot of writers are, it’s where we get ideas for the characters that pop up in our stories!” Autumn 2013 saw Robert returning on Citywing to the Isle of Man for the first time in three years to take part in the internationally acclaimed Isle of Man LitFest where he visited three primary schools and took part in two events to promote his new children’s book, Jacob’s War, which is set on the island in World War Two. The research for Jacob’s War was supported by the Arts Council. “It’s the untold story of child internment in the second world war,” explains Robert, “and it’s based upon real life events that happened in the UK in spring 1940.” So, much of the research was actually done on the Isle of Man? “It was and I always look forward to travelling on Citywing,” explains Robert, “I take the short flight to the Isle of Man from Blackpool which is only an hour’s drive from home. It’s really convenient. It’s only a short flight over to the island but the facilities at Blackpool Airport are second to none.” It’s Citywing’s personal touch that really appeals to Robert then? “Yes it definitely does. In this modern age of huge city sized airports you are really made to feel like the traveller is king at Blackpool when you travel on Citywing. The staff are friendly, they can’t do enough for you and you’re given plenty of time to get through security. It’s the same at Ronaldsway Airport, the Citywing staff there are so helpful too.” And the journeys on Citywing flights can even inspire him? “Yes they really can! It’s so comfortable that you can relax and get lots of work done. But while I’m typing I’m always on the lookout for an interesting fellow traveller who might end up in my latest book!”

Jacob’s War is published by Strategic Book Publishing and is available online and in good book stores. You can find more details of Robert’s books at his website www.ninnylizard.com
