Citywing steeped in history! What? I hear you ask is he talking about, Citywing are only 2 years old. Yes, this is true however, we do have some interesting historic facts that we are proud to be associated with. Firstly, of course is our return to Blackpool. Widely published in March with a commencement on the 1st April, the route from Ronaldsway on the Isle of Man was one of the first to be operated from there. History on this service dates back to around 1933 when it was operated by the then West Coast Air Services. The route has changed hands many times but still remains one of the most popular from the Northwest and one that we are once again, proud to serve. We were the last schedule service from the airport and now we are the first back! Blackpool itself is knee deep in history. The Pleasure Beach is the oldest in the UK. First opened in 1896, it is still the most visited tourist attraction in the UK. I myself shall be enjoying the thrills of this particular park now that the route is open and might even take the children!
We are also very much aware that without you, our passengers, we would not be here and for your continued support we are very thankful. We have a packed magazine for you to enjoy today with some new features including the introduction of our company mascot, Wirley. As part of our marketing relationship with Manx Radio, we carry out a series of outside broadcasts throughout the year to be aired on the Alex in the Afternoon show. As we provide services to the most destinations from the island, we do many outside broadcasts a year. These broadcasts are extremely important for promoting our routes and give the listener a great insight into what they can do once they land at our destinations. Recent visits have included Belfast, where we partook in a historic pub tour including the beautiful Crown pub which was renamed and opened in 1885 and still contains its original Victoriana and gas lights. Kelly Cellars built in 1720 was another tour stop and said to be where the Easter rising of 1798 was planned. Next was Gloucester including a visit to Cheltenham. Gloucester cathedral is stunning, dates back to 678 and was used as a location for the Harry Potter films. We went to Sudeley castle near Cheltenham, and it is still used as a private residence and dates back to the 12th century. It is where Katherine Parr, king Henry VIII sixth wife is buried and is a fascinating site to visit. As we grow, we have realised that we had a gap to fill in our company structure. I’m delighted to announce that Donna Sloane has now been appointed as Sales and Marketing Manager. Donna brings with her a wealth of experience in the airline field having first been recruited by Manx Airlines in 1991. Donna will oversee all of our PR work, marketing and sales initiatives and I am sure you will join me in welcoming her on board!

Citywing will be reinstating double daily flights between the Isle of Man and Blackpool from 1st April 2015.
‘We would like to extend our thanks to the UK Civil Aviation Authority and both Airports for their assistance in bringing these discussions and plans to a positive conclusion.
Following the sudden closure of Blackpool Airport last October, Citywing and the Airport owners have worked tirelessly to ensure that commercial flights can commence once again between Blackpool and the Isle of Man.
‘There is so much to see and do in Blackpool throughout the year. It is also a gateway to the North West and the very popular Lake District, Yorkshire and Cumbria areas. The Island will benefit hugely from this additional North West route as we welcome thousands of visitors from these regions every year.
Managing Director at Citywing, David Buck, said: ‘We are so pleased by this positive conclusion to our negotiations with Blackpool and that it will be open once again for flights to the Isle of Man and Belfast from 1st April. CITYWING NAMES DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES CARE AT HOME TRUST AS 2015 NOMINATED CHARITY Citywing is delighted to announce that it has chosen the Diana Princess of Wales Care at Home Trust as its nominated charity for 2015, providing them with 24 return tickets to use for fundraising during the year on all Citywing routes to and from the Island. The Isle of Man-based charity funds nursing staff to provide respite care and end-of-life palliative care for Island residents with cancer, or other life-limiting illnesses, where curative treatment is no longer possible or appropriate, and who choose to remain at home in their last days; in effect, to provide a ‘Hospice at Home’ service.

ver the course of the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, festival-goers will be able to enjoy a variety of family friendly attractions. There are fun and interesting living history characters, marauding pirates, live music, arts, crafts and food stalls, kids’ activities and lots more. Board the Ships Making their Gloucester Tall Ships debuts are the brigantine Morganster, handmade schooner Atyla and Baltic trawler Keewaydin (more announcements to follow). For the first time, the ships are open all day on the Saturday, Sunday AND Monday, so there won‘t be any ship enthusiasts left high and dry. Buy a wristband to see the tall ships at close quarters whilst also gaining entry to the museums at Gloucester Docks, The Gloucester Waterways Museum and the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum. Pirates and Living History Festival goers can enjoy entertainment on land and water with shows involving the swashbuckling Captain Jack and his pirate crew, Victorian characters. Stone Carving Festival Just a short walk away at Llanthony Secunda Priory there will be a nautically-themed stone carving event over the weeked to coincide with Gloucester Tall Ships. Exploring Gloucester

Crumlin Road Gaol first opened its gates to prisoners in 1846 and for 150 years was a fully operational prison. During those 150 years, the Gaol has housed murderers, suffragettes and loyalist and republican prisoners. It has been the home to executions, escapes, hunger-strikes and riots. Jump over to Jersey! Jersey has everything that is ideal for a family holiday - safe, clean beaches, country walks, attractions and sports that appeal to all ages. Jersey lies 100 miles south of mainland Britain, only 14 miles from the coast of France and has one of the best sunshine records in the British Isles. Getting around in Jersey is both easy and convenient. For maximum flexibility, you should hire a car, so that you can seek out the hidden beaches, explore the glorious coastline and find some off the beaten track places which make up a perfect Jersey holiday. Even without a car, you can make use of the extensive bus network around the island which will take you to most of the main places of interest. Men are still banned from knitting on the Island during the months of August and September, because their ancestors so loved the woolly craft that crops used to rot in the fields, unharvested. Surfing in Jersey Jersey has been a surf destination for eighty years and for a few years was one of the most important surf spots in Europe. At one stage, Jersey was considered to be the surf capital of Europe. In the 1960‘s - thousands of people packed St Ouen‘s Bay to watch the British Surfing Team riding boards made locally by one of Europe‘s only board manufacturers, Freedom Surfboards. The first Jersey Surf Club was created in 1923 by Nigel Oxenden and a group of friends, this was probably Europe‘s first Surf Club and surfing is still taught in the same place today at the thriving Jersey SurfSchool

Peel Viking Boat Races 18th July Started in 1963, the World Championship Viking Long Boat Races has seen a variety of characters and teams slugging it out for a winning prize. Held in Peel Harbour, the large brown Viking style boats challenge the strength and power of each team member. The large oars have to be worked together if the boat is to make a fast lap. Some teams race for charity and others for a night at the pub. There are always a few teams who dress up for the event and amuse the crowds with Viking hats and fancy dress!

For two weeks each year the Isle of Man roars into life as thousands of motorsport fans flock to the Island to experience the greatest road racing event in the world – the TT Races. World famous riders, and some locals, pit themselves against each other and against the challenging 37 and ¾ mile Mountain Course during the two-week TT period each year.
