Welcome aboard. Thank you for flying Citywing and welcome aboard this flight today. No matter where you go in the world or who you talk to, the conversation at some stage will invariably turn to the weather. It’s been a very strange summer for us both in the Island and further afield in the UK in terms of the weather we have experienced. We’ve had record high temperatures, record high rainfall and lots of record wind gusts in between.

So it just leaves me to say that I do hope you enjoy reading the remainder of Connect. We’ve introduced a “Meet the Staff” feature which kicks off with none other than yours truly. Our Sales and Marketing Manager, Donna has kindly put me forward as the Guinea pig to test feedback – so be nice! Do please sit back, relax and enjoy your flight and we hope to see you again very soon.

As someone who favours the UK and N Ireland for my summer breaks, it’s been a minefield deciding what to pack this year! Waterproofs, shorts and warmer woollies in the same bag have meant complex packing for us all in my family. We went to Belfast and the forecast will at best be described as damp. Having said that, it only rained all day on one day, and we all had a great time. Thankfully, at Citywing the weather hasn’t had too much of an effect on our punctuality. Because of the weather, we cancelled 4 services between June and August. This was out of 1722 services that were available for sale during the same period, so not bad at all! During this time, our punctuality of flights departing or arriving within 15 minutes of their scheduled time has remained high at 97.6%. This is all helped by the fact that we are based on the Isle of Man. I’ve mentioned before that being based here puts us in the distinctly advantageous position of being able to react quickly. Take the fog that we have experienced over the summer for example. Other airlines serving the island can’t get in to the island when it’s foggy so have to return to a UK point and wait for it to lift. Because we are here and the minute visibility returns (or for the locals when Mannanan lifts his cloak enough for us to see King Williams College) then we’re off, getting you where you should be as punctual as we can be.

David Buck, Managing Director

At Citywing we are committed to looking for ways to improve our service to you. We would be grateful if you would complete this questionnaire online after your flight. The forms are collated once a week and automatically distributed to our Quality Manager. You can access the survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Citywing or by scanning the QR code. All your answers are treated in the strictest confidence. Thanks for your help and we hope you enjoy your short flight.

CITYWING TEAMS UP WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES FOR BIG DAY OUT COMPETITION Citywing has teamed up with a number of local businesses to give the winners of a radio competition a ‘Big Day Out’. Kerry and Elizabeth Melville, from Heysham, flew to the Island last month accompanied by Darren Milby and Jody West from the North West’s The Bay radio station, which ran the competition. After arriving from Blackpool Airport, the foursome travelled south to Cregneash then onto the Sound Visitor Centre Café for breakfast. They then climbed the steps of Laxey Wheel before enjoying a delicious meal courtesy of 14North in Douglas. There was just time for a tour of Rushen Abbey before they headed back to the airport for their return flight to Blackpool Airport. Passes for all the attractions were provided by Visit Isle of Man. Kerry said: ‘We’d never been to the Isle of Man so we didn’t really know what to expect, but the food was fantastic and we were given a really warm welcome everywhere we went. Elizabeth and I had a thoroughly brilliant time and will be recommending that our friends and family book themselves a trip very soon!’

>

WWW.CITYWING.COM | OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2015

Citywing Managing Director, David Buck, said: ‘The competition was part of our wider marketing strategy to promote the Isle of Man as a holiday destination. Thank you to Visit Isle of Man and 14North for contributing to the prize – we hope to repeat the competition in the future.‘

Meet the Staff Our new feature of “Meet the Staff” kicks off with none other than our Managing Director, David Buck. David is a well known face in the aviation world on the island but his knowledge and experience of flying started well before his time on the Isle of Man. He first started in aviation in 1983 when he worked for Air Traffic Control for the RAF. After leaving the RAF he has since worked for Air UK, KLM uk, Manx Airlines, BA Citiexpress, EuroManx, Manx2 and now to the present, Citywing which was formed in January 2013. David is very much a family man who is married to his Hungarian wife, Csilla and together they have 2 children, Kristina and Alex. Family life revolves around the 2 children and their needs, helping them as much as possible to achieve their goals whilst still maintaining a balance in life. Sport plays a big part in David‘s spare time and you will often find him enjoying some form of activity with the family but largely it will be football, table tennis, badminton and tennis.

Music is another keen interest and David attempts to play the guitar whilst admitting to be a big fan of progressive rock (providing the singers sing properly). He enjoys reading, his favourite authors being Robert Ludlum, Tom Grace and Lee Child. He also enjoys travelling with the family, with old Eastern Europe a firm favourite travel spot with places like Budapest, Prague and Krakow topping the list..

CITYWING IMPLEMENTS NEW AND IMPROVED RESERVATION SYSTEM Citywing has launched its newly upgraded reservation system, offering a more user-friendly booking process for both customers and Citywing staff. 9

Citywing Managing Director, David Buck, said: ‘We are delighted to have implemented the new ameliaRES system, which will allow us to take our products forward and tailor them according to our – and our customers’ – needs. The team at InteliSys was very open to our ideas and worked with us to find ways to integrate them into the system. We are really looking forward to the opportunities that this will bring both for our company and for our customers.’

Elsewhere in Lightpool at Blackpool Illuminations Don’t miss Djonny Chen’s Ninth Letter Project from 10 September throughout the illuminations. Indonesian film maker Djonny has interviewed hundreds of residents of the Fylde coast and produced a series of beautiful video portraits that will be projected on a giant screen on the promenade near Gynn Square.

One of the most iconic sights in British culture, Blackpool Illuminations is the biggest free light show in the world. One of the biggest features of 2015’s display is a spectacular new element to the Illuminations called LightPool. This incredible concept will revolutionise the Illuminations using new creative content and innovative projection mapping technology. Blackpool Promenade will be completely transformed as 6 miles of seaside will be beautifully lit up, with a stunning projection show adorning The Blackpool Tower building. A film has been specially created for the occasion, and continues the Illuminations’ tradition of offering something new and awe-inspiring. Designed by WarPro and The Projection Studio, who have worked on world famous events like the World Cup and the Olympic Games, the show will run in cycles throughout the illuminations display and is set to be absolutely unmissable. On top of that, LightPool will be accompanied by a whole host of events and installations across the town, including at the Grundy Art Gallery. Visitors can marvel at its special ‘Sensory Systems’ exhibition, which combines the work of several acclaimed artists who have made light the central theme of their work.

Grundy Art Gallery

As part of Lightpool, leading artists from around the world will undertake spectacular new commissions involving light both in the gallery and around the town. “Sensory Systems” brings together five leading artists from around the world - Angela Bulloch, Rafael LozanoHemmer, Ann Veronica Janssens, Anthony McCall, and Conrad Shawcross – who will each create art installations exploring how light can affect your sensory experience. Many of the artworks are participatory. One piece is voice activated while another invites visitors to walk through a giant cone of light, created by smoke and projection.

Grundy curator, Richard Parry, said: “Light has been at the heart of how artists compose artworks. Whether it’s painting, photography or drawing light is in many respects the starting point. For Sensory Systems, we’ve switched the focus to be on how artists have been fascinated by light itself – both the science and technology behind it but also its ability to affect our senses and the way we experience the world around us. At the gallery we’ve been asking ourselves how we can do something new and exciting to compliment the amazing tourism offer of the Illuminations – something that is interactive and family friendly but also allows space for the imagination and for a certain spiritual reflection if you want to.”

THE STUNNING NEW DISPLAYS Ballroom Glitz

Drawing on Blackpool’s reputation as the home of ballroom dancing thanks to the success of Strictly Come Dancing, our creative curator, Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, has designed Ballroom Glitz. The glamourous section will sit opposite the Sands Venue – who also generously sponsor the display – and you can bet there won’t be a sequin out of place.

Glampire Re-Vamped!

Crazy Lights

An amazing dynamic new road-section stretching from The Imperial Hotel in North Shore to Gynn Square, this spectacular display features over half a million brightly coloured synchronised ever changing LED lights creating a myriad of patterns and shapes in light!!

Diamond Island

The iconic Gynn Island is transformed into a beautiful section of glittering chandeliers and tiaras as the Illuminations wave their magic making it the key focal point prior to the stunning display at the Cliffs.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen’s second 2015 work is a spooky take on the vampire but in LLB’s own glamourous style. The sleek, shiny tableau takes the concept to frightening new lengths and, we can promise you, looks incredible.

Street to Shore

From the makers of Blackpool’s successful graffiti festival, Sand, Sea and Spray, comes Street to Shore. Sticking with a guerrilla style of design, Sand, Sea and Spray boss Robin Ross – also a key member of the Friends of Blackpool Illuminations, is promising four stunning new tableaux for the Cliffs at Bispham by artists from around Britain and beyond...
