nonretired responders to a 2019 Federal Reserve survey admitted they have saved nothing for retirement. Take these steps to see if you can start blowing up those celebratory retirement balloons … or if you should keep them packed away for a bit longer.

STEP 1: LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP (AKA MAKE A RETIREMENT BUDGET) Budgeting may sound boring, stifling or overwhelming. However, if you really want to know if you can afford to retire, it’s an important first step. Call it a “spending plan” if you prefer. How much do you think you’ll spend each month in retirement? Break it down into: • Essentials (gas and electric bills, food, insurance, a mortgage if you still have one, etc.). • Discretionary spending (hobbies, that vacation you want to take each year, charitable giving, etc.). Then look at your guaranteed income sources. Will you receive Social Security, a pension and/or a spouse’s pension? Are you planning to work part time in retirement?
The gap between your guaranteed income and your expenses will need to be filled by retirement savings and investments – 401(k) and 403(b) accounts, traditional and Roth IRAs, annuities, mutual funds, bank accounts, etc. Example: If you need $5,000 a month and have $3,000 coming in from various guaranteed income sources, you have a $2,000 gap. That means your savings and investments need to provide at least that much each month. As a rule of thumb, many financial experts recommend withdrawing no more than 4% to 5% from your retirement savings every year. If 4-5% of your current savings covers the gap between your guaranteed income and expenses, you may be financially ready to retire. (Keep in mind, flexibility is important. You may need to reduce your withdrawals if you have experienced a bad year with your investments.)

STEP 2: TEST-DRIVE YOUR BUDGET Once you have a retirement budget in mind, practice living on it for a few months while you’re still working. Is it doable? Do you need to make some adjustments?

STEP 3: ASK THE EXPERTS Before you walk into your boss’s office with the big news, ask for some professional advice. A Modern Woodmen representative would be happy to talk retirement with you and your spouse. A few topics to address: • Your goals. Where do you want to live in retirement? What do you want to do with your time? Do your current savings match up with your retirement wishes? Does that planned retirement budget need to be adjusted? Or do you still need to boost your savings before the big day? • Social Security. You can log on to ssa.gov and review your Social Security statement at any time. This will help you know your options and what your benefits will be at various ages. The longer you’re able to wait to claim benefits, the bigger your check will be. If you’re widowed, check on survivors benefits. If you’re divorced and were married for more than 10 years, you may be able to receive spousal benefits.
• The inflation factor. If you retire at 65, you could likely live 25-30 years in retirement. As time goes on, you may become like old Uncle Bert or Aunt Betty, complaining about the cost of milk and bread. So even though you’re no longer working, you still need a way to fight inflation. That means investing part of your money for the long run. How much depends on your … • Risk tolerance. Investing in market-driven income options (such as variable annuities, stocks, bonds and mutual funds) provides growth potential but involves risk, including the possible loss of principal. Safety and guarantees are important … especially as you age. However, crawling into a shell and putting all your money in CDs at age 65 may not be your best course of action. How much risk is the right amount for you? If you discover retiring ASAP is not as PDQ as you hoped, a Modern Woodmen rep can help put you on the right track. And, hey, that might be worth a few celebratory balloons, too.
