SYMPTOMS PET HAVE ALLERGIES AND WHAT’S BEHIND THEM

A

llergies can vary in severity and cause various symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic, allergies occur when the immune system reacts to a foreign substance by producing antibodies. These antibodies identify a particular allergen as harmful, even when it isn’t. Allergies can cause reactions in the skin, breathing passages and digestive system. Thousands of people experience allergies to foods, pets and environmental factors. Pets also can be susceptible to allergies. Allergies can be found in cats and dogs, according to PetMD. They also may be present in other animals. People who notice their companion animals scratching, chewing or licking themselves more than normal may find their pets have allergies. Some pets may experience gastrointestinal issues as well. The pet care information site Pet Cube says common allergens for pets

can include: • pollen from trees, grass, and weeds • food ingredients • dust mites • prescription medications • fleas • flea/tick control products • cleaning products While their human friends may get runny noses or coughs from allergies, symptoms of allergies in cats and dogs tend to take the form of skin irritation, otherwise known as allergic dermatitis. Pet parents should look for the presence of red and irritated skin, hair loss, hot spots, and rashes or hives, in addition to extensive itching or obsessive licking. Flea allergies are one of the most common sources of allergies for pets. The bite of just one or two fleas per week is enough to cause a reaction. A pet gnawing just

at the base of the tail may be suffering from fleas, although other areas may be affected, advises PetMD. Seasonal and environmental allergies or allergies to foods can result in face rubbing and licking, especially the paws. Skin or ear infections also may occur. Pets also may be allergic to one another. According to veterinarian Dr. Robert Trimble, co-founder of the San Francisco-based Fuzzy Pet Health, says he’s heard of dogs being allergic to cats and vice versa. The American Kennel Club urges pet parents to seek help if their pets seem to be itchy all the time. Allowing a pet to scratch or lick for extended periods of time may lead to skin infections with bacteria or yeast. While all allergies cannot be tested, elimination diets and other techniques may help pinpoint sources of allergies. It is essential to speak with a vet to determine how to relieve allergies to help pets feel more comfortable. H February 2021 | HOME | 5

Steps for selecting the right pet food

6 | HOME | April 2021

N

ewly minted pet parents must make many decisions as they welcome their pets into their homes. The food pet owners choose is one of the most important decisions pet owners must make. A high-quality, wellbalanced diet can strengthen the immune system, help pets maintain a healthy weight and keep fur shiny and sleek. It was not too long ago that only a few different brands of pet food were available to consumers. The pet food industry continues to grow, and now there are scores of brands and formulations on the market. A report by Zion Market Research titled “Pet Food Market (Wet Food, Dry Food, Nutrition, Snacks and Others) for Cats, Dogs and Other Animals: U.S Industry Perspective, Comprehensive Analysis and Forecast,” found that the U.S. pet food market is expected to have a value of more than $30 billion in 2022. There are almost 300 manufacturers operating in the pet food section in the United States, which produce nearly seven million tons of pet food annually. With so many options to choose from, pet owners may not know where to begin when looking for acceptable food for their companion animals. Cost is one of the key factors in choosing pet food. While the cost of food does not always translate into quality, some less expensive foods may have more fillers. The pet resource Simply for Dogs says quality pet food is an expensive commodity, with the most expensive dog foods going for nearly $40 per 2.2-pound bag. But price points vary. Find the best food you can afford. Look at the ingredients. The Association of American Feed Control Officials has established guidelines for regulators to

govern claims a pet food company can make on its label. Foods that contain a single ingredient must contain at least 95 percent of that ingredient. Ingredients also are listed by weight on the label. Those in the top spots may not be more abundant; they may just weigh more because of their moisture content. Don’t be afraid of grains. While cats are strict carnivores, dogs are not. Pet owners do not need to avoid grains. In fact, grains, fruits, and vegetables can be a valuable source of essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber for many pets, according to the American Kennel Club. Since 2018, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration has investigated more than 500 reports of canine dilated cardiomyopathy, a serious heart condition, potentially linked to dog foods marketed as grain-free. Read the nutrition adequacy statement: A more important part of the labeling of pet foods is the nutrition adequacy statement. Look for the statement that it is a “complete and balanced” food and which species and stage of life it is for. Young pets and pregnant or lactating females require different nutrition than adult animals. Consider non-branded foods as well. Certain pet food manufacturers also contract with well-known stores to produce store-branded varieties of popular formulas at discount costs. For example, Diamond Pet Foods produces its own line of foods and is the company behind Kirkland Signature pet foods available at Costco. If you have doubts about what to feed your pet, consult with a veterinarian. Then do some research to narrow down the possibilities. H April 2021 | HOME | 7

Tips to find the right dog trainer

D

ogs add an entirely new component to the dynamic of a household. Whether a dog is being welcomed into the bustling home of a family or the more sedate environment of a singleton’s apartment, the four-legged friend will soon acclimate to its new surroundings and become a beloved member of the family. The transition from a petfree home to one with a dog is not always smooth, especially if the dog exhibits certain behaviors. Chewing is a common behavior exhibited by dogs after they enter a new home that may alarm new dog owners. The ASPCA notes that it is normal for puppies and dogs to chew on objects as they explore the world. Some dogs may do so to alleviate pain stemming from incoming teeth, while others chew to keep their jaws strong. Destructive chewing may be a byproduct of anxiety or frustration, and such behavior can be especially hard for new dog owners to comprehend and corral. In such instances, dog owners can benefit from working with professional dog trainers. The American Kennel Club notes that dog training is an unregulated industry, which can complicate the process of finding trustworthy trainers. In recognition of that difficulty, the AKC offers the following tips to dog owners searching for the right trainer. • Ask about a trainer’s philosophy. Dog trainers use various methods, but the AKC emphasizes the importance of finding trainers who use positive reinforcement training. Such a philosophy rewards appropriate behavior and teaches alternative behaviors in place of inappropriate ones. The AKC notes that positive reinforcement training is science-based and fosters a love of learning in dogs while strengthening the bond between dogs and their owners. • Find out which services the trainer offers. Trainers offer different services. Some may specialize in one-on-one training, while others train in class-like environments that can promote socialization. Each dog is different, so a training environment that works for one dog may not work for another. Speak with various trainers about their services and then choose the one that most aligns with your dog’s personality. • Ask for a trainer’s credentials. The AKC notes that certification with certain organizations is not mandatory, though certifications may indicate how serious a trainer is about training dogs. Trainers should be forthcoming about their credentials, including any certifications they may have. The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (www.apdt.com) can help dog owners learn about the various types of certification so they can make the most informed decisions possible when choosing a trainer for their dogs. • Take note of your own comfort level with the trainer. The AKC reminds dog owners that dog trainers teach dog owners, who will need to be comfortable with a trainer to get the most of his or her services. Ask to observe a training class and take note of the trainer’s interactions with both the dogs and their owners. Dog trainers can help dogs acclimate to new homes and help their owners adjust to their new roles. More information about dog trainers can be found at www.akc.org.

Tape measure Pencil Square Protractor Circular saw Paintbrush Electric drill Tin snips Hammer Materials 2 sheets of 3⁄8-inch rough cedar plywood 1 sheet 5⁄8-inch exterior plywood 1 pound 11⁄2-inch deck screws Three 8-foot-long redwood 2-by-4s Four 8-foot-long redwood 2-by-2s 2 quarts exterior paint or stain Twelve 8-foot lengths of redwood lattice 1 tube all-purpose panel adhesive 5⁄8-inch wire brads Two 10-foot lengths metal drip edging 1 box 5⁄8-inch galvanized roofing nails 1 pack asphalt shingles

DIY DOGHOUSE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Following the diagrams, cut and paint plywood sides (A, B) and panels for the rear (C), front (D), floor (E), and roof (F). Sketch out front opening. 2. Cut and screw four 41-inch-long 2-by-4s to the underside of the floor panel so it sits off the ground. Check that floor height matches the sketched front opening’s bottom (41⁄8 in. from base of front panel), then adjust sketch if necessary and cut opening. 3. To make it easy to screw the panels together, reinforce each side-panel corner with one 2-by-2 that will run from the floor to 1⁄2 inch from the top edge. Screw side, front, and back panels to the floor. 4. Center roof above the structure and use screws to attach two painted 46-inch-long 2-by-4 rafters that flank the exterior of the side panels. To keep the roof from sliding to the rear, attach three painted 6-inch-long 2-by-4s that butt against the exterior of the front panel. 5. Referring to the diagram, build and attach with screws (from the inside) the arbor of 2-by2s. Add the painted lattice trim with panel adhesive and wire brads 6 to 8 inches apart and paint over them. 6. Mask roof edges with metal drip edging, attaching it with roofing nails. Also use roofing nails to attach asphalt shingles, working up from the roof’s bottom end. Compliments of Sunset H

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT NOCTURNAL PETS

W

hile many animals like to soak up the sun and go about their business in daylight, there are plenty of others who seem to come alive after darkness falls. These night owls and more hunt and survive in the dark, which is called nocturnal and crepuscular behavior. Nocturnal behavior is an adaptation to help animals survive in dark conditions and avoid predators. While some have excellent night vision, others have poor eyesight and rely on other senses to survive in the darkness, according to Animal Sake. Nocturnal animals sleep all day and are active at night. Crepuscular animals are mostly active at night, but not entirely sedate during the day. While several wild animals, such as lemurs, coyotes, and skunks, follow these patterns, certain animals that have been domesticated as pets also have nighttime predilections. People who take these animals into their homes should understand that they will not see much action from the pets during the day when the animals are resting. But when nighttime arrives, there will be much more activity. Those who are hoping to sleep themselves may have to make accommodations if they plan to cohabitate effectively with nocturnal pets. Those unsure whether their pets are nocturnal can explore this list. • Mice and rats: Rats and mice are intelligent and social animals that are often kept as pets. They are most active at night when they can be heard squeaking, eating, and chewing. • Hamsters: Another small rodent, hamsters also are nocturnal. At night, hamsters can be seen running on their wheels, collecting foods, and making nests in their bedding. • African pygmy hedgehog: It is currently not legal to own a hedgehog as a pet in the state of Georgia. However, in other parts of the United States, this is a species of hedgehog commonly kept as a pet. According to The Spruce: Pets, pet hedgehogs are quiet, active, entertaining, and require a lot of care. They make great companion animals. However, because they are nocturnal, they will need to be fed and cared for in the evening hours. • Leopard geckos: These lizards sleep in safe and hidden spots during the day and become active when night falls. Leopard geckos do not have the same light requirements as other reptiles that are kept as pets. • Cats: Cats are most active between dusk and dawn and are content to snooze throughout much of the day. They seem keen on catching prey (whether real or imaginary) around the house at night and vocalizing when their owners are trying to get some shut eye. • Rabbits: These furry friends also enjoy frolicking at night. They may scratch around their cages and make various noises. They also visit the litter box at night (if trained), groom themselves and may be more receptive to petting from owners. Many animals prefer to be out and about at night. Prospective pet owners should be aware of these tendencies, so they know what to expect from such pets. H April 2021 | HOME | 17

GUIDE TO ADOPTING A

Shelter Pet

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of changes to daily life. One of the positive effects of COVID-19 is that many individuals have turned to pets to tame loneliness or bring some brightness into their lives amidst all the uncertainty and turbulence. In April 2020, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said applications to foster dogs and cats was up 200 percent. In addition, PetPoint, a software system shared by shelters nationwide, reported fostering and adoptions were up by 700 percent since 2019. A TD Ameritrade survey found 33 percent of Americans have considered fostering or adopting a furry friend during the pandemic. While it may be tempting to rush out and adopt a pet right away, careful consideration must be given before bringing a new pet into a home.. Expense One of the biggest considerations is cost. The TD Ameritrade survey found that dog owners spend up to $1,201 a year on their pets, while cat owners spend up to $687 per year on average. Food costs top the list of pet expenditures, followed by veterinary care and grooming. Lifestyle Another aspect to consider is if a certain animal will fit its prospective owners’ lifestyles. Outdoor enthusiasts and physically active people may

18 | HOME | April 2021

want an exercise buddy, so a high-energy dog breed may fit the mold. Those who want a cuddling companion or lap warmer may opt for a less active dog or a cat. Research the pet It is important to learn the care needs of specific pets, particularly among breeds of cats and dogs. For example, certain dogs may fit best with one person and not take to a household full of kids. Some breeds need ample outdoor space to run around, while others may be content to be couch potatoes. Another consideration is temperament and the animal’s history. Some rescues come from abusive situations or may have spent years on the street, so owners must be ready to help such dogs adjust to more loving environments. It’s important to ask how the pet came to be in the shelter. All considerations need to be factored into the equation. Learn the adoption process Each shelter or rescue organization has its own rules and regulations for adoption, including fees they charge by way of a donation. According to the pet resource Top Dog Tips, a shelter needs to be sure that adoptive pet parents will be able to care for the pet. An extensive questionnaire and a potential home visit may be part of the application process.

Veterinarian references, age restrictions (adoptive pet parents are often 21 years or older) and permission from a landlord if one rents will be needed. Some rescues have stipulations regarding fenced yards. Some shelters even insist on a disclaimer that they reserve the right to remove the pet if they feel the animal is not being properly cared for. Pet adoption should always include careful consideration of a wide range of factors. BEST OVER-ALL BBQ EXPERIENCE The Inked Pig (Main Street SW & Industrial) The new pig in town has wowed us with their new age twist to the classic southern BBQ. Andrew Elliott and Jimmy Ellis, are coowners of The Inked Pig that opened up just two years ago in midtown Gainesville. They share their decades of experience crafting some of our favorite barbecue picks. The hip atmosphere, along with a super

friendly staff certainly enhanced David’s visit. Joy, the hostess greeted us and guided us through some of the favorites, and David got excited with the Triple Threat sandwich, classic pulled pork piled on with house smoked bacon, plenty of their bacon jam and house slaw and pickles – delicious! The Barbacoa Brisket is another town favorite, with grilled onions and chimichurri sauce – something different that Jimmy blended for that refreshing Argentine flavor. For a meal we found that a plate of the picture perfect, well-seasoned St. Louis Cut Ribs, some of their super moist and tender Sweet Tea Smoked Chicken, accompanied with a cup of their porridge-like smoked chicken mull and side of creamy mac and cheese. Their house-made sauces certainly enrich the meats and taste perfect with the mac and cheese too!

FAVORITE TEXAS-STYLE BRISKET Moonies Texas (Atlanta Hwy/Flowery Branch) Located in a former service station, Moonie’s BBQ provides a rustic feel for BBQ lovers. Pitmaster Jason Martin honed his craft in Texas and his tender, flavorful brisket is the result. Moonies smokes their meat hot and fast, which has enabled a very enjoyable BBQ experience. David selected the slider plate, which is a great choice if you want to sample four different meats. He ordered pork, chicken, sausage, and turkey, with a side of jalapeno mac & cheese. As long-time fans of Moonie’s, David’s foodie friends, Bruce and Sandee Fricks, both ordered the delicious brisket straight out of the smoker. The brisket looked perfectly juicy and had a nice burnt edge. Their sauce accompanies the brisket well and provides just the right amount of heat without masking the taste of the meat. Sandee paired her meal with coleslaw and potato salad, while Bruce chose April 2021 | HOME | 19

the Brunswick stew. Jason and wife, Brooke Martin, regularly support the community and continue to do so with their deliciously crafted barbecue. FAVORITE BBQ SAUCE AND RIBS Sherry’s Bait & BBQ (Dawsonville Hwy/ Hwy 53) Conveniently located right off Lake Lanier, Sherry’s Bait & BBQ is the perfect stop for a meal before and after a day on the lake. This location is very quaint and inviting and did not disappoint in the realm of BBQ. Their BBQ sauce stood out against others with the sweet and spicy mix of their homemade blend. David said it paired perfectly with the tender and moist ribs, which is hickory smoked using the “low and slow method.” David also enjoyed the brisket and pulled pork with the homemade BBQ sauce as well. Sherry’s Bait & BBQ begins their barbecue with high quality meats, and this was evident in all three dishes. Recommended by a fellow customer, David ordered Mac & Cheese and cream corn to accompany his meal and thought it paired nicely. The side items were very enjoyable, especially with the rest of his meal. Sherry’s Bait & BBQ puts a lot of care into their dishes as everything is homemade, including all the sides and desserts. This location is known for having many vegetarian and gluten free side options, and do not have any fried options, which is perfect for those with dietary restrictions. They offer fresh dine-in and take-out, as well as food truck and catering services. LOCAL’S FAVORITE BARBECUE Smoke House BBQ (Atlanta Hwy & Mundy Mill Rd) Being a family-owned restaurant, Smokehouse BBQ strives to make their guests feel at home. The staff is very welcoming, and the restaurant is cozy, which allows you to wind down and enjoy some tasty BBQ. Everything is homemade from their BBQ sauce to their desserts, and it is definitely a local favorite. David visited this location a few years ago, and remembered the menu looked great, as did the service and presentation. Upon his recent visit, he was pleased with the same experience. He enjoyed the traditional BBQ pork and ribs, along with the mac & cheese and fries. The pork had just the right amount of smokiness, and the Sweet Heat homemade BBQ sauce enhanced the flavor even more. If you are looking for a homey and friendly BBQ eatery, this is the place to go. FAVORITE HOME-STYLE BBQ The Hickory Pig BBQ (Hwy 60 & Mt Vernon Rd) The Hickory Pig is definitely a hole in the wall, but do not let looks be deceiving. The owner Phil has been smokin’ and pullin’ BBQ at this location since 1991 and continues to please customers today. When you walk in, it does not feel like a normal restaurant. It feels like you are walking into your family’s home as they are preparing to serve dinner. When David walked in, he was approached by Phil as if they were life-long friends, and made David feel right at home. Phil likes to tell stories and reminisce on the good ole days, while feeding you delicious food at the same time. David was served a pulled pork sandwich with collard greens and Brunswick stew, which all tasted great. The pork is smoked with hickory wood and was extremely tender and was complimented well by the barbecue sauce. The locals rave about the collard greens, so David made sure to get a portion- he agreed they were delightfully tasty. The Hickory Pig has received many awards and has been featured in Atlanta Magazine and Southern living. You might have to call first to make sure the oven is up and running- but if it is, you will not be disappointed. 20 | HOME | April 2021

READERS SUGGESTION Johnny’s Barbecue (Cleveland Hwy) Johnny’s BBQ is a family restaurant that has operated in Gainesville since 1990, and is currently being run by Johnny’s grandson, Zach Ivey. This small joint seems to be a fan favorite, as many frequent customer’s recommended David visit. David had a platter with ribs, chicken, and pork, which are all hickory smoked. On the side, David got Brunswick stew which was very flavorful. Johnny’s has a drive thru and catering trucks, so they seem very eager to serve their customers and assist with your barbecue needs. WORTH THE DRIVE Since smokin’ and grillin’ barbecue is an art and creation, we hit the road and found a couple spots that delivered an experience that is well worth the drivin’ and tastin’! ATLANTA-STYLE FAVORITE BARBEQUE Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q (Little Five Points/Atlanta) This spot is the official BBQ of the Atlanta Falcons, so bring your appetite and this BBQ shack will deliver some true Atlanta-style comfort food. David, said go all in and start off with the Chicken Fried Ribs which are rolled in flour, hot sauce and then flash fried and served with their white BBQ sauce – delicious! Order The Everything Plate, pulled pork, beef brisket, ¼ chicken and smoked ribs and you’ll definitely find lots of tasty enjoyment. Let’s not forget the dozen plus sides. Another treat for the big boys is their Beef Short Rib, which is 1.5lbs of succulent beef on a 9” short rib that is slow cooked, and even tastier than grandma’s pot roast –certainly a sight to see!! FAVORITE SOUTHERN & ASIAN TWIST BBQ Sweet Auburn BBQ (Poncey-Highlands/Atlanta) Our last stop brings barbecue to a whole new level, combining the traditional barbecue style with an innovative Asian twist. UGA grad and owners Howard and Anita Hsu have created an excellent menu, inviting environment, and exceptional food and hospitality. Our server, Hannah, helped build a perfect meal for our table to share. We started with the Barbecue Nachos, fully loaded with pulled pork, charred corn pico, shredded cheddar, queso fresco and scallions, which was a pleasant treat. The House Smoked Beef Brisket was some of the best we’ve had, and the Curb Market Spare Ribs put the babies to rest! Take a drive, you will be glad you did!
