SWIMMING POOL

6

APRIL 2021

Barring any shutdowns do to Covid the pool will open on May 1st this year. We will be using the same reservation as last year; the only change will be that you will only be allowed to book your spots two weeks in advance. We are currently bidding out the pergola repairs and the work on those will be complete prior to the pool opening. We have ordered additional pool furniture and expect that to be here by the end of March in plenty of time for the pool opening; we think that this will allow us to add more spots in the reservation system.

CLUBHOUSE

Since reopening, the clubhouse has been booked up for most weekends. If you have a date in mind that you would like to reserve the clubhouse, we encourage you not to delay in booking your time. You can reserve the clubhouse on the website www. traditionsofbraselton.org >Amenities>Clubhouse rental.

ONSITE MAINTENANCE PROGRAM

Up and coming projects: • In progress. Curb cleaning – we plan to start at the front of the neighborhood and work through the property; • Pending scheduling. Lay sod at the main pond; • Re-painting traffic lines at the front entrance. • Lot Mowing began on February 22nd.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

We are waiting on a confirmation from the county to meet with a small number of homeowners to discuss resolution for our pond. Once the meeting is confirmed, Bryan Allen will organize the attendees. The county is cooperating thus far with many actions to improve the situation with our pond. Our long-term goal is to make sure they have not added a large amount of silt to the pond that would cause the Association to need to dredge the pond prematurely.

NEWS FROM THE MANAGER • Enhancements to the back roundabouts; • Enhancements to the main pond area; • Enhancements to Cotton Gin Row fence line and Links monument area and; • Enhancements to the front entrance (behind the retention ponds). Reminder The Grounds Committee would like to remind residents of the Golf Cart Policy for the neighborhood. All Golf Carts must be registered, and drivers must comply with the rules. The most important things to remember are: • Drivers must be licensed; • Drivers must adhere to all traffic laws (speed limit, stop at stop signs, etc.); • Drivers must yield to automobiles.

In the last 30 days 164 violations were generated; of those 23 have been closed, 15 were escalated, 2 were re-opened and 124 were new. Below is a snapshot of the types of violations generated. Thank you to those that quickly addressed violations last month! It is never our goal to send violation letters or assess fines and we love to close violations! Please be mindful of the following: • Trashcans must be stored out of view from the street or

ARB/CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS

There are currently 79 homes under construction, of these there are 18 presales and 61 specs (14 of the specs have been sold). This is a lot of activity which naturally can cause some inconveniences for owners and your patience is appreciated while driving through the neighborhood and as construction is taking place near your homes. The renovation of the restaurant, Twenty7, is progressing nicely and is currently projected to be completed by June. Please make sure to follow Traditions Golf and Country Club on Facebook to stay up to date and see all the progress pictures. Traditions’ golf course is undergoing the largest course renovation in the history of the club. We have hired Medalist Golf, Inc., the industry leader in golf course renovations, to renovate the bunkers and install a Capillary Concrete bunker liner. Capillary Concrete bunker liner system will give us optimum drainage control and will keep the bunker moisture level at optimal levels to eliminate wash out, plugged ball lies, and other maintenance/playability issues. The new bunkers should be completed within the next 2 weeks. We cannot wait to see how great the golf course looks this season with all the major projects we have completed over the last 6 months. On March 27th, we will be hosting an exciting Glow Golf Skills Challenge for our golf and social members. This will be a very fun night for our members and families featuring multiple, fun golf challenges, a live DJ, and socializing. We have partnered with Glow Vibe Golf to put on this event which will be quite the visual spectacle. Golf season is right around the corner! Just like the weather, our social and golf calendar is starting to heat up. There has truly never been a better time to join Traditions. Join us in this exciting new era at the club! For more information on membership, please contact our Membership Director, Casey Haney, at chaney@traditionsgcc.com.

COVENANT ENFORCEMENT

It is that time of year when residents who have not kept up with regular weed and fertilization treatments will have weeds sprouting up in their yards. During inspections this past week it was disappointing to see so many yards with this problem. Regular treatments including post and pre-emergent will help you to avoid this issue in the future and if you check into a few companies I think that you will find that treatments are quite affordable. Please check the condition of your yards and be mindful of the condition of your pine straw or mulch and your turf to avoid receiving a violation letter. Unlicensed or inoperable vehicles are considered a nuisance and will be removed. No motorized vehicles are permitted on pathways or unpaved common areas. Hope for a New Generation

“In the last 8 years, I went from being a defiant runaway to having a family of my own. I’m using things I learned at Eagle Ranch and applying them to how I deal with my marriage and handle conflict. I’m grateful and see now the seeds that were planted, how they’re being harvested and used. I learned a lot about how to work on me, which is making me a better parent and a better wife.”

RECIPE CORNER

GARLICKY SPAGHETTI WITH LEMON AND PINE NUTS www.cooksillustrated.com

The key to this Cook’s Illustrated recipe that yields a flavor-packed spaghetti made from pantry ingredients is making the most of the garlic. We mince our garlic to make sure that all of it cooks at the same rate. Toasting the garlic over low heat in ¼ cup of extra-virgin olive oil ensures that it cooks to a pale golden brown. Any darker and its flavor goes from delicately buttery and sweet to bitter and harsh. We cook our spaghetti in just 2 quarts of salted water in order to ensure that the pasta cooking liquid is loaded with starch. We reserve a portion of this liquid and add it to the spaghetti along with the oil. The starch helps the oil cling to the pasta and gives the dish a perfect — not greasy — texture. Adding 1/2 teaspoon of raw minced garlic near the end of cooking helps to balance garlic’s dual attributes — the buttery sweetness of toasted garlic and the fire of raw garlic. Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

2 tablespoons plus ½ teaspoon minced garlic ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 pound spaghetti Salt and pepper 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest plus 2 tablespoons juice 1 cup chopped fresh basil 1 ounce Parmesan, grated (½ cup), plus extra for serving ½ cup pine nuts, toasted

INSTRUCTIONS

A garlic press makes quick work of uniformly mincing the garlic, which in turn ensures that the garlic browns evenly. Serve with a salad for a light, quick supper. 1. Combine 2 tablespoons garlic and oil in 8-inch nonstick skillet. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until garlic is pale golden brown, 9 to 12 minutes. Off heat, stir in pepper flakes; set aside. Traditions of Braselton

2. Bring 2 quarts water to boil in large pot. Add pasta and 2 teaspoons salt and cook, stirring frequently, until al dente. Reserve 1 cup cooking water, then drain pasta and return it to pot. Add remaining ½ teaspoon garlic, lemon zest and juice, reserved garlic-oil mixture, and reserved cooking water to pasta in pot. Stir until pasta is well coated with oil and no water remains in bottom of pot. Add basil, Parmesan, and pine nuts and toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve, passing extra Parmesan separately. APRIL 2021

Happy Spring Everyone! Birds are starting to appear; green leaves are returning to our trees. A sure sign that Spring is here. As we make this transition to spring and yawn and stretch ourselves awake from our hibernation of winter, do you feel a sense of awakening within? Spring is a time of renewal, growth, and energy. We start thinking about planting flowers, getting outside, and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine and spring cleaning. Ok, maybe not all of us think about that last one! lol. But the truth is, Spring is a time when our energy naturally moves upward and expands so there is an internal need to get up and move. This in turn helps to clear stagnant and negative energy from the body and mind and refreshes our spirit. Spring is an opportunity to gain a new prospective in areas of our lives which may no longer be serving us. It is a time to think outside the box, to “spring clean” mentally and physically. It is a time when our creative thinking is blossoming, and the body is ready for activity. Our bodies also begin to crave new foods. Springtime veggies in beautiful colors and texture give new energy to our changing appetite. That lighter fare going hand in hand with our lighter sense of being. So welcome spring with new perspective. If you have ever tripped off a curb or slipped on a patch of ice, you probably understand the benefit of having a good sense of balance. Practicing balancing poses in yoga will help you gain both physical and mental steadiness and poise on and off the mat! That brings us to our March Yoga.

Should You File Early for Social Security?

Waiting until full retirement age makes sense for many investors – but not for every investor.

Conventional wisdom and a little bit of math tell us that waiting at least until full retirement age (between 66 and 67, depending on when you were born) will net a larger monthly payout than filing for Social Security as soon as you’re eligible at age 62. If you can wait even longer, you’ll get an 8% increase in your monthly benefits every year you delay between your full retirement age and age 70 – a potential 8% to 32% increase (a pretty impressive “rate of return” that’s hard to beat). This assumes, of course, that you have good health as well as enough income and/or retirement savings that you can afford to wait. But this approach may not fit every case. Depending on your financial standing, personal life expectancy and spousal situation, filing early can actually be advantageous. But make this decision carefully – remember, filing early yields a permanently reduced Social Security benefit.

Consider these three factors when deciding whether or not to file early:

Your cash needs

Sometimes, the best laid plans go awry. You may have to leave your job unexpectedly for health reasons – you may get burned out, or a business deal doesn’t go as well as hoped and you find yourself in debt. Perhaps you find yourself wanting – or needing – to spend more time with those you love. If you don’t have enough savings to retire sooner than planned, think about claiming Social Security benefits early. Social Security offers a consistent source of income, so it can make for a great backup plan. But it’s important to really do the math and budget accordingly, since it’s unlikely to be a princely sum. Benefits are estimated to average $1,543 in January 2021, which would sum to about $18,516 per year. The maximum benefit at full retirement age for 2021 is $3,148, about $37,776 per year. Some strong savers still like having extra income to fund more of their wants in early retirement, perhaps preferring to let dedicated retirement savings accounts continue to grow. The extra income can enhance the so-called “gogo” years, a period when we can expect to have the most time and energy when we first enter retirement.

Your health

If you live to the average life expectancy for someone your age, you’ll receive approximately the same amount over your lifetime whether you start collecting benefits sooner or later. But the math only works out if you live to your late 70s, the average American life expectancy. If you have a significant health event or have a family history of illness, filing early could be a smart option.

Your spouse

If you’re the lower-earning partner, your lifetime benefits will also be lower. Ask your advisor to calculate how to maximize your total household benefits. This plan could involve you filing earlier, and the higher-earning spouse delaying their more substantial benefits in order to get that 8% credit for each year between full retirement age and age 70. This strategy could maximize your benefits as a couple, and is also likely to secure higher survivor benefits for you when the time comes. As with many financial decisions, the best Social Security claiming strategies need to account for your personal situation – your health, your savings, your marital status. Remember that you’re generally not eligible for Medicare until 65, so if you’re not covered by an employer, you may need to purchase your own health insurance coverage until Medicare kicks in. It’s best to consult with your spouse and a knowledgeable financial advisor to help maximize this important source of recurring, inflation-adjusted and guaranteed income. Your advisor can help you run some calculations to maximize your household and lifetime Social Security benefits, which will help you and your spouse determine the most appropriate time to file. IN THE SPOTLIGHT

THE WAIT IS ALMOST OVER! GET SET FOR FUN IN THE SUN about living in Traditions of Braselton is how well neighbors get along. It’s all too easy to get drawn into a conversation and become distracted, but never leave a child unattended in and around the water. It only takes a moment for them to toddle over to the edge and topple in. According to SafeKids.org, among preventable injuries, drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 – 4 years old.

With the sun making more regular appearances and temperatures starting to rise, it’s nearly time to start investing in new bathing suits, flip flops, pool toys and bottles of sunscreen in anticipation of the return of pool season at Traditions of Braselton in just a few weeks! With plans to open our sundeck, water slide, splash zone and lap lanes on May 1st, we wanted to keep you abreast of how Swim Season 2021 will roll out. • We will continue to maintain COVID-19 protocols at the pool for the safety of our residents • To that end, we will be employing the same reservation system as last year to limit the number of guests per pool session and ensure social distancing • Reservations will be available for up to two (2) hours at a time, and you will now be able to book up to two weeks in advance. • You’ll note new furniture around the pool deck to better accommodate our residents and increase the comfort level while at the pool • Our poolside pergolas will be rebuilt before we open on May 1st to offer a bit of shade for residents who prefer to take cover during their time at the pool. Once pool season begins, our highly trained and certified team of lifeguards will be at the ready to maintain order and rescue swimmers in distress. Still, it’s a good idea to commit basic safety guidelines to memory for your own wellbeing, as well as the wellbeing of your loved ones. 1) Keep a Sharp Eye Out: One of the best things

2) An Ounce of Prevention: One of the best preventative measures you can take is to teach your children to swim. Not only will it prove a new way to have fun, but it could potentially save their life one day. SafeKids.org recommends they at least know the following skills: float or tread water for one minute; turn around in a full circle and find an exit; swim 25 yards to exit the water; and exit the water without using the ladder. Swim lessons are available through the Jefferson Parks & Recreation Department, as well as neighboring Jackson and Gwinnett County Parks & Rec AND YMCA of Georgia’s Piedmont in Winder, among others. 3) Steer Clear: It is very important to teach children to stay away from pool drains. Their natural curiosity could pose a danger as sweet little fingers, toes, hair or bathing suits can get stuck in a drain all too easily. 4) Learn A Valuable Lesson: CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a powerful tool you’ll hope you never have to use, but if you do – you’ll be thankful you know it. Lessons and certification are available through the Red Cross. It’s wise to learn how to perform CPR on infants, children and adults. 5) Respect the Role: It’s vitally important to teach your children to respect lifeguards. Let your kids know what it means to be a lifeguard and that when they blow their whistle at them or call out to them, it’s to keep them safe – not to be mean and spoil their good time. There’s a good reason they don’t allow anyone to run around the pool deck. It’s too easy to slip and fall on slick surfaces, risking nasty scrapes, broken bones or even lost teeth. To get your poolside physique in great shape, be sure to take advantage of our state-of-the-art fitness center and yoga classes – available to all Traditions of Braselton neighbors! Once the whistle blows to launch pool season, we wish you a fun and safe Spring and Summer! Traditions of Braselton
