COMMUNITY NEWS

Spring is in the Air

CLICK HERE TO REPORT A VIOLATION

What does that mean? It’s time for the 4 P’s of home ownership. It’s time to get outside and take a 360 walk around your home. What do you see? Is your Paint fading or peeling? Do you need a fresh coat? Is your driveway and sidewalk filthy and moldy? How about a good ole fashion Pressure washing? Let’s not forget landscaping. Now is the time to Prune trees and trim overgrown bushes. Additionally, it is time for that spring application of Pine straw (mulching material).

• Pine straw and mulch installation are essential to the survival of your landscape during a drought. They will reduce the amount of water that evaporates from your soil, greatly reducing your need to water your plants.

As we head into spring these are a few areas we will be looking at during our covenant inspections. Make sure you don’t receive one of those pesky notices by being proactive and checking off those maintenance items now.

• Pine straw and mulch act as an insulating layer on top of soil, keeping it cooler in the summer.

• EXTERIOR PAINTING - IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOU MIGHT THINK You can save a lot on the extent of necessary painting and repairs by catching failure early. Keep a close eye out for spider cracks, fading, and on the overall health of your older paint in particular. (** Please remember all painting projects require prior approval/an ARC application must be submitted) • PRESSURE WASHING

• PINE STRAW & MULCH Pine straw & Mulch –there are many benefits to using pine straw as natural garden mulch. First and foremost, pine straw is a natural by-product; meaning pine straw is discarded by pine trees naturally. Pine needles (straw) help provide excellent growing conditions for healthy trees, plants and shrubs. Here are some benefits of pine straw and mulch installation besides the appearance.

April 2021

• Pine straw and mulch keep weeds down, and the weeds that do grow are much easier to pull. • They are also a great deterrent against weeds, insects, and rodent free. • PRUNING LANDSCAPE TREES Proper pruning of landscape trees improves their structural strength, maintains their health, enhances their beauty, and increases their value. WHY SHOULD TREES BE PRUNED? Pruning is advisable if:

Did you know that routine pressure washing will increase the lifespan of your paint and stain? And, it can transform your exterior surfaces, washing away corrosive residues, mold, mildew, and more from your deck, patio, walkways, driveway, and siding.

6

• Pine straw and mulch improve the quality of your soil by breaking up clay and allowing better water and air movement through the soil. Also, mulch provides nutrients to sandy soil and improves its ability to hold water.

• trees have crossing branches, weak branch unions, or other defects • branches are dead, dying, decayed, or hazardous • lower branches interfere with people or vehicles, or block visibility of signs • branches are growing into buildings or utility wires • limbs have been broken by storms • trees have grown too large and might injure people or damage property Landscape trees not only make homes and communities more beautiful, but they also improve our environment and can increase the value of a property up to 20 percent. Trees are truly assets that need to be enhanced and protected. Proper pruning is definitely a worthwhile investment!

A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD

UPDATE: DAVE’S CREEK AND VILLAGE CENTER LANE EROSION ISSUES Dave’s Creek. We have heard from two wellplaced sources from the Golf Course and County Commission that the County has decided to move forward with the repairs, and Windermere Golf Course will take over maintenance from that point on. Neither source would give us a timeline to the project, or the scope of work to be completed. That said, construction vehicles have recently been seen on site, and this is a step in the right direction. Although we have seen a step forward, if this momentum does not progress into action in the coming weeks, we are seeking volunteers to help with a potential “Cajole Campaign,” where we reach out to key people so they can hear Windermere’s dissatisfied voices as to the unsafe eyesore that continues to exist on Dave’s Creek Road. Village Center Lane. Since our last update, the Committee has been working on this project, and we are well under way in the plans that have been made. Please see below for our progress report.

o Result: - Keck & Wood worked with Windermere HOA, Forsyth County, and Rochester & Associates to obtain needed documents for evaluation, planning , and studies. This included, but was not limited to: Original Construction Drawings, Modification/Improvements, Hydrology Studies, and more. - Keck & Wood recommendations are expected at the end of March. Those recommendations will then go to the Committee for review, and then to the full Board. • April: o Plan: - Submit RFP to construction companies for build out. - Evaluate bids and approve contractor.

• February: o Plan: Collect bids from three Civil Engineering firms. Engage firm for evaluation and present needed scope of work o Result: After seeking 3 competitive bids, Windermere HOA engaged Keck & Wood Engineering Firm to conduct an engineering assessment, analyze alternatives and propose a feasible solution. Keck & Wood, and the Committee are meeting bi-weekly to discuss all updates on the project. • March: o Plan: Committee evaluates and accepts

Windermere Leaflet

Engineering firm’s recommendation; recommendation made to full Board for approval to move forward

- Keck & Wood will stay on in advisory roll to supervise and validate the work with the proposed scope. • May: o Plan: Construction commences • July: o Plan: Estimated completion date. If you would like to provide input, please feel free to contact Board lead Richard Clark at juniordrums@ hotmail.com, or Property Manager Josh Laskowski at josh.laskowski@fsresidential.com.

SWIM TEAM NEWS

THE WINDERMERE WAVES 2021 REGISTRATION IS OPEN! We have been approved to have our full Windermere Waves summer season! Registration is open via our Team Unify website: Go to www.windermerewaves.com, and you’ll see the Registration tab on the right. Our team committee and coaches are planning a safe return to the summer league season and are very excited to have the kids back in the water!! You will see a few changes as we adapt to some restrictions/challenges of the times (i.e. coaches will take temperature checks as kids enter pool deck, kick boards will be cleaned between each age group practice, social distancing will be encouraged in each lane and on deck, etc.). We ask all families interested to register by April 15th as this will help us in organizing number of swimmers per each age group’s practice (we may combine and/or divide some age groups to avoid over crowding of lanes). Practices begin Monday, May 10th. Our swimmers will practice in the afternoons until school is out, then our practices switch to the mornings after Memorial Day. See practice schedules below (note, there may be some slight modifications once final registration numbers are received). REGISTRATION fees include: kickoff celebration, team t-shirt, end of season banquet, meet fees, and various other treats throughout the season. Also, register on or before April 15th to avoid a $25 dues increase! PRACTICE SCHEDULE: Afterschool practice schedule - MONDAY thru THURSDAY (May 10th - May 27th): 6 & Under age group: 4:30 to 5:00 7 & 8 year olds: 5:00 to 5:45 9 & 10 year olds: 5:45 to 6:30 11 & older: 6:30 to 7:30 Morning practice schedule - MONDAY thru FRIDAY (June 1st June 25th; no practice Monday, May 31st-Memorial Day): 9 & 10 year olds: 8:00 - 9:00am 11 & older: 9:00 - 10:15am 7/8 year olds: 10:15 - 11:15am 6 & unders: 11:15 - 12:00 noon Ripples** 12:00 - 12:45 Mon. thru Wed. and Fridays (No practice on Thursdays; 4 to 6 year olds - see website for more details) MEETS: ASA has scheduled all northern team’s meets for Thursdays, as usual, with the last one on a Tuesday - see dates below. For our

Windermere Leaflet

meets we are hoping to do in-person meets, however, there are still some details to work out and we may have some restrictions on number of spectators to attend (this will all be fine-tuned as we get closer to the beginning of the season). NEWS FROM THE FORSYTH COUNTY CHAMBER

Let’s Thank Them, FoCo! For eight consecutive years Forsyth County has been named the Healthiest County in Georgia by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. While many factors contribute to this remarkable ranking, Northside Hospital Forsyth is one of the largest contributors to our community’s outstanding health levels. This has been true for many years but perhaps never as evident as it was in 2020 as we all faced a global health crisis. While many were astonished, the team at Northside Forsyth was strategizing. While many were debating about how to re-engage, the team at Northside Forsyth was fighting in the trenches of the unknown. And while many experienced cabin-fever, the team at Northside Forsyth was experiencing exhaustion. The Forsyth County Chamber spent much time in 2020 focusing on what needed to be done to support our small business community. In 2021, the Chamber staff used that same lens as it considered how the community could show support and appreciation to all of Forsyth County’s healthcare professionals and, more specifically, the team at Northside Forsyth. Under these efforts, the FoCo4Fronliners initiative was created. The FoCo4Frontliners project lets our healthcare professionals know how much we appreciate them by gifting each of Northside Hospital Forsyth’s 3,200 employees with an official initiative T-shirt (that has been approved by Northside Forsyth to be worn at work) and as many Visa gift cards as possible. Consider joining the project and making a contribution, via the North Georgia Community Foundation’s, FoCo4Frontliners fund. All donations made via the North Georgia Community Foundation are tax deductible. Visit www.FoCo4Frontliners.org to learn more.

Highest Level of Excellence - Don Hendricks Partnership Award Recently, the Forsyth County Chamber and the Forsyth County School System hosted the first-ever, virtual Celebration of Excellence. This celebration of educators and community partners showcased the factors that make Forsyth County schools the best in the state. One award that stands out above the rest is the Don Hendricks Partnership Award. The 2021 recipient of this award was Forte Data Systems. Forte Data Systems is a local, small business that provides software, data products, and on-boarding fulfillment solutions nationwide to insurance companies, third party administrators and direct marketing organizations. The Hendricks family established this award in 2002 after the passing of Don Hendricks, a long-time member of the Board of Education. He believed in the Forsyth County School System and its quest for quality learning and superior performance for all. Brian and Carter are both huge cheerleaders for Forsyth County Schools! They are consistently supporting, attending or encouraging an educational opportunity in the district. They helped kick off the Forsyth County Education Foundation in 2015 and have been a great advocate for raising funds for innovative grants in our schools. They have been a vital partner to the Alliance Academy for Innovation since it opened through providing time and resources to multiple career pathways. The success of its students and programs are directly impacted by the involvement and contributions of Forte Data Systems. They also support the REACH scholarship, student leadership programs, and are always available and willing to help our district and each school in any way they can. The impact they have made on Forsyth County Schools is lasting and unparalleled. Congratulations to Brian Richey and Carter Patterson, co-owners of Forte Data Systems, the 2021 Don Hendricks Partner of the Year!

PET NEWS

That Dreaded Day I decided to write a more personal story this month. A story so many of us have experienced.... the very, very, very dreaded day of putting our pets to rest. I refer to it as THE WORST DAY OF YOUR LIFE... even after we have done it 3 times prior, each time is still the worst day of our lives. We lost our dear Pomeranian mix rescue this past week. Dr Reddy estimated his age at about 15 years old. Moe was like the cat with 9 lives... but we think he had even more lives. We took him into our home about 10 years ago and had a house full with 2 other larger dogs. He fit right in and held his own for a small 12 pound boy. I thought I was originally more of a big dog girl, but boy did he change that! Let me add I DO love all sizes, but had always had larger pups prior. Any size is perfect! Moe became my little shadow following me everywhere all times of the day and became my true buddy. He loved his toys and had great energy for many of his years. I knew when following me around became a struggle that he was declining. He developed Lymphoma.... 2 knots in his neck area that grew too fast. His appetite became less.... slept a lot... walking was a struggle.... We so dreaded the day with a passion, but we knew he was miserable and it was not fair to let him suffer anymore. I still won’t let myself look at his pictures and this may last for a while. My main point of this story is to please be wise and do not let your babies suffer. As a personal pet sitter for over 14 years, I have cried like a baby (just ask

my husband) with each owner who lost their pets. I treat them like my own. And all who know me, know that I love hard and I love deep, but I also want what is best for these innocent animals who depend on us to satisfy all of their needs... even if it hurts like crazy. I have watched some owners let their pets linger way too long because it was too sad to say good-bye. This breaks my heart!!! It is not about US. Please think of their quality of life and know when the time is right. I have always been good about giving that compassionate love and advice when clients/friends go through this and now I must follow my own encouragement even though it hurts so badly. I always say: • cry when you need to... and it may take days • take deep breaths and get some fresh air • try to stay busy with work, hobbies, any healthy diversion • take one day at a time... sometimes in the beginning it’s one minute at a time and then one day you can happily reflect back on the joyful memories I would like to add a tremendous thank you to my vet, Dr. Reddy and his staff at Windermere Animal Hospital for providing the best loving and caring service over the past several years. They were always readily available during any emergency or when I THOUGHT it was an emergency and handled me and Moe with compassionate care when my emotions were all over the place.
