CATCH AND RELEASE FOR BEGINNING ANGLERS

F

ishing is one of the most popular recreational pursuits in North America. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service says around 40 million people fish each year. Fishing can be an ideal way to spend time in the great outdoors, and people often bond with family and friends while fishing. As any angler can attest, there is a rush that comes from getting a small tug on the line and then reeling in a fish. At this point, fishermen must decide if the fish is a keeper or should be tossed back into the water. Sometimes the answer is very clear. Rivers and lakes across the world are managed by various organizations that serve to protect wildlife and natural resources. Rules may be in place regarding the sizes of fish that can be kept, which species are safe, and which are protected, and even when people can fish. In a study led by researchers with the U.S. Geological Survey that was published in the journal Fisheries, thousands of distinct populations of fish were studied. Researchers determined that as many as four out of 10 freshwater species in North America are in danger of approaching extinction. As a result, fishing is regulated by Fish and Wildlife officers and game wardens. Those who are new to fishing or to a particular region must learn and follow the rules regarding fishing. Fishing licenses are typically required to fish in each state or area. Always speak with a licensing agency about size restrictions and any other rules regarding species of fish. Also learn about which methods of fishing are legal. Drag nets or other methods of mass fish collection or luring the fish with lights or other equipment may be prohibited. Learning how to safely catch and release fish if the need arises also is an essential component of responsible fishing. When done correctly, catch-and-release methods can ensure high survival rates and preserve native fish populations. The National Park Service advises those who fish to follow these tips. • Avoid fishing when conditions are stressful for fish, such as when water temperatures are high. • Use equipment that enables one to land the fish quickly without struggle. • Avoid the use of scents and artificial baits that encourage fish to swallow hooks. Learn which bait are prohibited in certain bodies of water. Artificial lures that hook the fish in the lip are preferred. • Avoid playing with the fish to exhaustion. • Keep the fish wet and calm and treat it gently to remove the hook. Hold the fish underwater and allow it to ventilate before release so it can regain its swimming strength. Fishing is a popular sport and can be enjoyed responsibly. Why the water matters to novice kayakers K

ayaking is a fun way to spend an afternoon, particularly in summertime. If smiles on the faces of kayakers are not enough to convince you just how fun this sport can be, perhaps statistics can convince you how enjoyable it is to paddle away in a kayak. According to the Physical Activity Council, which each year conducts the largest single-source research study of sports, recreation and leisure activity participation in the United States, recreational kayaking is the most popular paddle sport in the United States, attracting more than 11 million participants each year. People who have never been in a kayak may be intrigued by those statistics and tempted to follow the example set by millions of kayakers who take to the water every day when the weather permits. Safety should be a top priority for all kayakers, and especially for novices. A kayaking course can be a great way for novices to familiarize themselves with the basics of kayaking, including the best practices regarding staying safe on the water. Local watersports retailers and recreational organizations that take water sports enthusiasts out on the water may offer safety courses, and these courses can be great resources while also helping people get their feet wet before paddling away. When kayaking for the first time, it is important that novices choose the right type of water for their experience level. Rough, choppy waters can prove challenging to even the most skilled kayakers, and these same waters can be deadly for novices. The following are some characteristics novice kayakers should look for in a body of water before pushing themselves and their kayakers

6 | HOME | May 2021

into the current. • SIZE: Novices should avoid vast bodies of water, such as oceans, rivers, or large lakes, until they gain more experience. Large ponds and small lakes can be great places to gain some experience and familiarize oneself with the nuances of paddling. • DEMEANOR: Demeanor might not be a trait one normally associates with water but looking at a body of water in this way can be a great way to determine if it is the right place for a novice. If a body of water is raging, with choppy waters and rapid waves, then steer clear. If the water is calm, then it is likely a safe spot for novices. • TRAFFIC: Novices may be intimidated by crowds, but other kayakers can serve as something of a safety net for novices. Kayaking is a fun group activity, and novice paddlers should never go it alone. • VARIETY: Novices should steer clear of waters that allow power boats. Such vessels can alter paddling conditions quickly, and that can put novices in potentially precarious positions. Stick to waters that allow only canoes or other boats that will not affect water conditions. • ACCESS: Until they get more comfortable in their kayaks, novice kayakers should stay close to shorelines so they have quick and simple access to land should they struggle to get acclimate to the water and being in a kayak. Kayaking is a popular activity that even novices can enjoy, especially when they take certain measures to ensure their safety. H

How to make the most of kids' first fishing trips F

ishing provides a great way for parents to bond with their children in the great outdoors. The value of first impressions has been well-documented, and parents who want their kids to inherit a love of fishing can take the following factors into consideration so their youngsters’ first fishing trips are successful.

LOCAL PROGRAMS Fishing need not be an expensive hobby, but the costs can add up. Parents who are not sure if their kids will embrace fishing should investigate local programs. Many towns, especially those with reputations for fishing, host free family fishing events. These events give parents an opportunity to see if their kids enjoy fishing before they start buying them gear. Starting simple Any fisherman would love to snag a trophy fish such as a largemouth bass on his or her first trip. And while that is possible, it is unlikely, especially for youngsters. Such fish tend to be difficult to catch, even for seasoned fishermen. When taking kids fishing for the first time, fish for something that is somewhat simple to catch and capable of being caught throughout the day. If you are not familiar with your local rivers or lakes, visit a local outdoors store and ask for advice about which local bodies of water are home to fish that kids might be able to snag. Though it is not imperative that kids catch a fish on their first trip, doing so might make them more enthusiastic about their next trip. HAVING FUN Do not make the day all about catching fish, as even the most seasoned fishermen have their off days when nothing is biting. If the focus is on catching fish, kids might grow discouraged and not want to come back if they do not catch anything on their first trip. Focus on the fun everyone is having rather than the fish they are (or are not) catching. Some youngsters might just be thrilled to spend a day out on the water with their parents. Encourage that enthusiasm and kids are more likely to remember their first fishing trips fondly. BREAK TIME Kids might not have a full day of fishing in them on their first trip. Frequent breaks to explore nearby nature, enjoy a snack or even toss a ball around can keep children from growing bored throughout the day. Fishing is a family-friendly activity that youngsters can enjoy from the moment they first pick up a rod. Tell us about your first fishing trip at @HomeLivinginNorthGeorgia on facebook.

FLOWERY BRANCH FARMERS MARKET

Celebrates Decade of Fresh Flavors

A

s winter turns to spring locals begin to think about planting gardens and reaping the rewards of their labor this summer. For those who do not have a green thumb and want to enjoy freshly picked produce, our area has a variety of fresh farmers markets ripe for picking all season long. Weekly markets begin in late April and early May each year bringing farmers and makers from the local area together with a wide variety of homegrown and handmade goods. Farmers Markets in the Hall County area focus on Georgia Grown produced by smaller farms. Shoppers are thrilled to find handmade goods including breads, jams, jellies, spices and essential oils produced locally by licensed artisans. 2021 markets the 10th anniversary of the Flowery Branch Farmers Market. This market began in the parking lot at the Spout Springs Library serving neighbors in Sterling on the Lake and grew so rapidly that it moved to downtown Flowery Branch on the lawn behind the historic train depot. Even through the socially distanced summer of 2020, growers and makers managed to hold the marketfinding customers were eager to add fresh produce to their stay at home dinner plans. Opening day for the Flowery Branch Farmers Market is Thursday, May 6th. The market will run through October every Thursday from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. To celebrate the 10th anniversary, the City of Flowery Branch and Discover Lake Lanier have teamed up to bring live music to the market weekly along with a series of education seminars and hands on workshops. “The Farmers Market is a key component to our downtown revitalization project” says Bill Andrew, City Manager. “We are investing in the program this year and plan to move it in December to the new covered market we are building behind the train depot.” Until then, the Flowery Branch Farmers Market will be held on the lawn of City Hall with seminars and events happening inside the comfort of the building’s event space. “We are so excited to assist the city with managing the Flowery Branch Farmers Market this year” Renee Carden with Discover Lake Lanier remarked. “We’ve been involved for the past three years in helping to promote the market and producing special events like the Tomato Sandwich Party held in July.” Carden looks forward to playing a much more active role as market manager this season. Plans are underway for the educational seminars and hands on workshops in partnership with the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension office in Gainesville. Carin Booth, the Family and Consumer Sciences agent agrees 2021 is going to be an incredible year for the farmers market. “It’s a great collaboration between UGA Extension office in Hall County, the city of Flowery Branch and Discover Lake Lanier. Being part of the market helps us share our knowledge and expertise on growing, harvesting and preserving all those delicious fruits and vegetables summer yields.” Booth will be conducting educational events including free pressure cooker testing and how to classes on jams and salsas among other topics. Local beekeeper, Bob Bradbury has high hopes for the 2021 market season. He sells his honey products at several markets in the region but has a soft spot for Flowery Branch since this is where he makes his home. “Our Flowery Branch Farmers Market is very special. The vendors have developed a comradery that comes from our common mission of providing the public with fresh and local products that support a healthy lifestyle.” The Flowery Branch Farmers Market opens on Thursday, May 6th with a live musical performance by Karleigh Dills, an aspiring country music singer from Hall County. On the second Tuesday of

each month, the market will be Alive@5 with a live band and special activities involving the Main Street merchants. For more information on the Flowery Branch Farmers Market, visit their website at www.flowerybranchfarmersmarket.com or find them on Facebook.

GREAT WAYS TO ENJOY

a Day on a Boat

Few things can be as enjoyable on a warm day as spending some time on a boat. For many people, the sound of the water lapping beneath a boat and the feeling of a warm summer breeze blowing through their hair is the very essence of summer relaxation. Boating appeals to people with varying interests, and there are many ways one can enjoy a day spent traversing a nearby river, lake or ocean. FISHING Recreational fishing is wildly popular. According to the Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation, in 2016 more than 47 million Americans participated in fishing at least once during the calendar year. In its Survey of Recreational Fishing in Canada, the organization Fisheries and Oceans Canada found that more than 3.2 million adult anglers actively participated in a variety of recreational fishing activities in Canada in 2015. The sheer volume of people who enjoy recreational fishing suggests itÕs an activity that has widespread appeal and it can benefit people of all ages and skill levels. What’s more, fishing provides a wonderful excuse to spend a day on a boat. SAILING Sailing is a rewarding and demanding hobby. Avid sailors often describe the origins of their love of sailing as “catching the bug.” Indeed, few hobbies can be as gratifying as sailing, which the organization Discover Boating¨ notes requires participants to be more active than almost any other type of boating. While sailing can be physically demanding, when the waters are calm, few activities can be as peaceful and relaxing. EXPLORING Of course, even people who do not own their own boats can still enjoy time on the water. The Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation notes that roughly 90 percent of U.S. residents live within one hour of navigable bodies of water. Many waterfront communities, particularly those with tourism-based economies, are home to small businesses that provide local river, lake or ocean tours. These can be great ways to learn about local history and/or see local marine life. A day spent on a boat is a great way to enjoy a warm afternoon. And the options are endless when it comes to how to spend such days on the water. H

FOOD ADVENTURES

Favorite Four Sushi Spots

W

e have good news if you are looking for some of the most fresh and tasty Sushi in the area. David Fountain, a local food enthusiast and our community’s Best of Forsyth Financial Planner and Investment advisor, continues his monthly mission to uncover and support Gainesville’s local favorites. This month, David wanted to highlight some of our community’s best Sushi restaurants in hopes to provide you, our readers, with a new favorite spot while also helping these restaurants regain some of the business they may have lost during the pandemic. From Maki, to Nigiri, to Sashimi, David is on the hunt to discover it all. This Japanese cuisine has a wide variety of preparation and presentation methods that are sure to excite your taste buds.

BLUE FIN HIBACHI & SUSHI (Perk Hill Dr) Blue Fin Hibachi & Sushi provides exactly what David envisions when he thinks of a traditional, quality, sit down sushi restaurant. This location seems to be a local favorite in Gainesville, and it is apparent why. The service was extremely friendly and inviting, and the sushi rolls were just as enticing. David ordered the Spicy Tuna Poke to begin his meal and was immediately impressed with the freshness of the tuna. There is not much sauce in this dish, but it is still perfect for those who enjoy the fresh flavors. After his appetizer, David enjoyed the Lakeview Roll, and the Lanier Roll. The Lakeview Roll is spicy tuna and spicy salmon topped with avocado and red snapper. This dish also let the freshness shine. David is a huge fan of sauce, so his personal favorite was the Lanier Roll. This roll is salmon, yelMay 2021 | HOME | 19

lowtail and asparagus topped with seared tuna, masago and crunch with the chef’s special sauce. This roll had a very exciting presentation and provided a lot of dynamic flavors and textures that left David’s taste buds incredibly happy. Blue Fin Hibachi & Sushi continues to impress its loyal locals with their fresh fish and friendly service. ZEN RAMEN AND SUSHI BURRITO (Gainesville Square) Exceptional sushi, service, and atmosphere are what you can expect from Zen Ramen and Sushi Burrito. When walking into this location, you are invited in by the fun decorations and music. David was promptly seated and given their unique menu. As implied by the name, this restaurant puts a modern twist on sushi, and has brought Sushi Burritos to Gainesville. David ordered the O.M.G Sushi Burrito, which was sushi rice, shrimp, scallop, lettuce, spicy tuna, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, and spicy mayo. During David’s sushi journey, it was unique and exciting to try something other than a traditional sushi roll. He was certainly not disappointed and was surprised with how well the flavors and textures of traditional sushi meshed with the proportions of a burrito. However, if you are a dedicated fan of normal sized sushi, David also highly recommends the Rock and Roll. This roll is spicy tuna, crab salad, avocado, cream cheese, deep fried and topped with spicy mayo and sriracha. The Rock and Roll provides a lot of flavors and textures that pair very nicely together. Overall, Zen Ramen and Sushi Burrito is the perfect place to go if you are looking to switch up your normal sushi routine and try something different. WASABI (Winder Hwy) Wasabi prides themselves on their modern interpretations of classic dishes, and their insistence to only use high quality, fresh ingredients. David ordered the Red Dragon Roll and the Mamahoho (Tuna) 20 | HOME | May 2021

Papahoho (Salmon) Roll, excited to experience the freshness that Wasabi promises. He was pleasantly surprised by both rolls, and the Red Dragon Roll clearly exemplified their emphasis on freshness. This spicy tuna roll, topped with tuna, avocado, and spicy sauce, really let the fresh flavors of the fresh tuna shine. The Mamahoho Papahoho Roll was David’s favorite and included spicy tuna and salmon, topped with shrimp, crab meat, crunch, mayo, and fish eggs. This is the perfect roll for those who like a little more excitement and a broad flavor dynamic. Not only were the flavors and freshness apparent, but the service was very inviting and friendly. This sushi spot offers indoor and outdoor seating, perfect for your social distancing preferences. David opted to sit outside, and said it was a wonderful spot to enjoy his lunch. MR. TERIYAKI JAPANESE STEAK HOUSE (Jesse Jewell Pkwy/ Dawsonville Hwy) This location provides a casual and laid-back feel compared to traditional sushi restaurants. Upon arrival, they provide a colorful menu loaded with many unique sushi rolls. David started his meal with the Sun Power Roll and really enjoyed the freshness of the fish. It was the perfect light roll to start his meal, and left David excited to try more. David then ordered the Mr. T roll, and was exceptionally pleased. This roll is made of spicy tuna and salmon, topped with avocado, eel sauce, spicy mayo, and masago. Being a huge fan of sauce and spicy tuna, David found this dish very enjoyable. Stocked with a full bar, Mr. Teriyaki creates a fun and relaxed environment to chill out and enjoy some tasty sushi. If you need quick, yet quality sushi, Mr. Teriyaki Japanese Steak House is for you.

WORTH THE DRIVE FUMI (Duluth, Dunwoody, Dacula) The inside of this establishment is beautifully laid out and pro-

vides an upscale feel. They offer a large menu full of Sushi and Hibachi varieties. David opted for the Roll for Two Love Boat, which gave him 6 different rolls to enjoy. This Love Boat included a Spicy Yellowtail Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll Crazy Roll, Godzilla Roll, Fumi Dynamite Roll, and a California Roll. All the rolls were very tasty, but David’s Favorite was the Godzilla Roll, which is spicy tuna and scallion, deep fried with a special sauce. The Love Boat options give parties an exciting vessel to view and eat the many sushi rolls that FUMI offers. All the sushi was extremely fresh and created a very enjoyable tasting experience. If you are looking for a unique and exciting sushi adventure, or the perfect location for a special event or occasion, FUMI is the place to be. MF SUSHI (Avalon/Alpharetta and Inman Park/Atlanta) This sushi restaurant is certainly one location to go out of the way for. As you enter MF Bar, there is a casual yet luxurious feel. They offer indoor and outdoor seating with modern, updated décor, creating the perfect atmosphere for relaxation and enjoyment. David and Jennifer began their meal with the Baked Lobster, which MF Sushi is known for. Topped with Japanese mayo, eel sauce, tobiko and scallion, this appetizer certainly did not disappoint. They also ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll, which definitely satisfied Jennifer’s sushi needs. If you are looking for an upscale night out with quality sushi and a full bar, MF Bar is the perfect sushi destination for you.

ately asked for David and Jennifer’s names and continued to refer to them throughout the evening, creating a personable experience. When placing their order, David and Jennifer did not regret starting with the Tuna Ahi Poki, which was prepared beautifully with fresh and tender Hawaiian marinated tuna and spicy sesame oil. Their next choice on the menu was a featured item, the Double Spicy Tuna Roll. Jennifer said that this is the best spicy tuna roll she has had the pleasure of eating. The presentation was not only picture perfect, but the taste was exquisite. Saving the best for last, David highly recommends the Spicy Dragon Roll. It consists of Shrimp Tempura, and a cucumber top with spicy tuna. Look closely and you will notice the roll is creatively shaped like a dragon- what a unique touch! Overall, this hidden gem is now Jennifer’s all-time favorite sushi. The entire experience is what keeps the regulars coming back for more.
