GOLF CART SAFETY The Board of Directors is asking for your cooperation and assistance. We as a Board are very concerned about the rise of unlicensed youths operating golf carts. In the event you don’t know the Georgia laws in this area, please see the information below that was prepared by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office. The bottom line is that no person should be at the wheel of a golf cart unless they have a valid drivers’ license. In the coming weeks, the Sheriff’s Office will be stepping up enforcement of the Georgia Code. If the situation doesn’t

resolve itself, the Sheriff’s Office has informed us that parents may be ticketed for allowing their children to illegally operate these vehicles. As always, please call 911 or the non-emergency number (770781-3087) to report suspicious persons as well as unsafe or illegal operation of a motor vehicle. Windermere Board of Directors

Golf Cart Laws and Safety on Roadways A golf cart, legally defined as a motorized cart, may operate on roadways when all of the following elements of law are met: 1) Operate during daylight hours only (O.C.G.A. 40-6-330). May, however, operate at night if they meet the equipment requirements of 49 Code of Federal Registry 571.500: headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals; and 2) Operate only on a roadway with a posted maximum speed limit of 35 MPH or less (O.C.G.A. 40-6-362); and 3) Must be equipped with an amber strobe light that is visible for 500 feet to the rear and front (O.C.G.A. 40-6-362); and 4) The operator possesses a valid driver’s license (O.C.G.A. 40-5-20 and Coker v. State, Georgia Court of Appeals. June 13, 2003); and a 5) Slow Moving Emblem (16 inch red/orange retro-reflective triangle) is visibly attached to the rear (O.C.G.A. 40-8-4 (a)). Other Restrictions: 6) Impeding the normal flow of traffic is prohibited: a golf cart or other may not drive “at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic” (O.C.G.A. 40-6-184), e.g., operating in a 35 mph zone that prevents a following vehicle from driving the posted speed limit. 7) Occupants: Children under the age of 6 prohibited from riding as a passenger, for “a child passenger restraining system” shall be provided in all passenger vehicles (O.C.G.A. 48-8-76). Occupants must only ride in a proper seat position. Legal exemptions: Registration (tag) is not required (40-2-20 exempts motorized carts), and Insurance is not required (34-33-2 – only registered vehicles require Insurance). Note: Off-road vehicles, such as John Deere Gators, Kawasaki Mules, Yamaha Rhinos, etc. may not operate on the roadway.

PET NEWS

Taking Care of a Goldfish Thinking of goldfish as a pet? They are easy to love yet often die too soon because they typically do not get the care they require to live out their maximum15 years. The biggest costs are upfront, meaning if you get the fish tank set up right the 1st time, you’ll only have to spend a few bucks per month to keep them happy. Goldfish come in various colors - orange, yellow, white, black and more... with any combination of markings. Your local pet store likely carries a few varieties of fancy goldfish. Though the average pet store does not have the resources to give EACH fish sufficient tank space, the average goldfish will be able to live in crowded conditions for a short period time and will perk up once you bring them home.

a filter large enough for your tank. Change the filter cartridge every 3 months or as indicated on the package. If the tank is small, use a filter and change water more often. Use a de-chlorinator to kill bacteria in tap water at least 24 hours in advance of the tank set up. You will need to do a partial water change (removing and replacing 25% of the water) between 1-3 times a week and a complete water change every 1-2 months. Never, ever use soap to clean... only plain water! A bucket, a siphon hose, gravel vacuum and a tank brush make cleaning much easier. As far as feeding goes, overfeeding will wreck havoc on their digestive systems. It’s easy for kids especially to grab much more than needed.

The biggest reason goldfish die by the time they are 3 years old rather than the expected lifespan of 10-15 years is because the tank is too small. Like all living beings, goldfish produce wastes. Their wastes cause harmful ammonia and nitrates to build up in the water.

Be aware of the tiny portion required. They may become constipated or produce so much waste that it will over pollute the tank. They can become overweight and have trouble swimming. Use high quality goldfish food and you can supplement with skinned blanched peas and freeze dried bloodworms.

Over time if the tank is not cleaned the fish will literally be poisoned by his own wastes, so please be responsible with this task. In large tanks, it takes a long time for wastes to build up. Having a filter and changing the water regularly provides a longer, happier life.

Hope this helps if contemplating a goldfish as your next pet!

For a small tank, you will need one that holds at least 10 gallons. It will need to be upgraded as your fish grows. For larger fish, expect to get a tank holding about 30 gallons of water for one fish. Use

NEWS FROM THE FORSYTH COUNTY CHAMBER

Northside Hospital Forsyth Ranks Top in the World!

Northside Forsyth Hospital is continually expanding to contribute to the exceptional health of Forsyth County’s residents. The hospital’s current $43 million expansion includes the addition of two new floors (containing 64 new beds) to its surgical tower to be completed in the third quarter of this year with expected patient occupancy by the end of 2021. For nine consecutive years Forsyth County has been named the Healthiest County in Georgia by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. While many factors contribute to this remarkable ranking, Northside Hospital Forsyth is one of the largest contributors to our community’s outstanding health levels. So, it’s no surprise that the Forsyth County Northside campus was recently named one of the World’s Best Hospitals by Newsweek. The two thousand hospitals named in this list – which covers twenty-five countries – were chosen for their consistent excellence including distinguished physicians, top-notch nursing care and state-of-the-art technology. Only seven Georgia hospitals were included in this global list. Northside Hospital Forsyth also stood out on the Newsweek report by performing above average in infection prevention measures. “Northside Hospital Forsyth continues to expand 22

services to meet the constant growing healthcare needs of our community. They have consistently protected our citizens’ health and championed positive community development efforts as a long-standing partner. I am extremely proud of our Northside location and believe their recognition is very well deserved,” commented James McCoy, President and CEO of the Forsyth County Chamber. “Northside Hospital Forsyth is committed to balancing clinical excellence with compassionate care. Our success has been built on physicians and staff who are greatly skilled and deeply passionate, and a patient community that entrusts us with their healthcare. I am so proud of the team I get to work with here. Our leaders possess grace, humility, and a keen eye for improving performance while building the self-esteem and confidence of all staff members. We are so very grateful for this recognition,” said Lynn Jackson, Chief Operating Officer of Northside Hospital Forsyth.
