COMMUNITY NEWS
PAST EVENT:
Cornhole Tournament On April 17th, 14 teams participated in the Cornhole for Awareness tournament held at the greenspace in front of the Windermere pool. The event drew participants of all ages and even some semi-professionals. Competition was very stiff, but everyone who attended clearly had a great time. Boy Scout Troop 1109 held the tournament to raise awareness for Mission 22, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing mental health to our nation’s military veterans. The name of Mission 22 comes from the statistic that every day 22 military veterans take their own lives. Many veterans struggle with PTSD and traumatic brain injury and Troop 1109 wanted to bring attention to this issue. Those veterans who were at the tournament really appreciated all of the positivity from the attendees. If you have friends or family in the military please let them know that Mission 22 has resources available to help them should they need it. If you want to contribute directly to Mission 22 please visit this link. Boy Scout Troop 1109 would like to thank the residents of Windermere for allowing this use of the property for this event.

PET NEWS
Hot Weather and Pets With hot Summer temperatures here, I wanted to remind us all to be “heat aware” with our beloved pets. Even on days that may not seem very hot to us, our furry babies can feel toasty and uncomfortable. Our pets get dehydrated easily so always provide plenty of fresh clean water. (And please do that anyway regardless of the weather. I hate seeing dirty water or empty bowls!)
leaving pets unattended in cars in extreme weather is illegal in several states. Do NOT leave your pets unattended around a pool. Not all of them are good swimmers and even if they can swim, they could have a moment of panic and struggle to get out.
Be careful NOT to over exercise your pups and keep them inside when it’s extremely hot. I cannot stand to see people running with their dogs on a hot Summer day! Be wise and caring and give them shorter walks especially midday when the heat is highest.
As far as swimming goes, introduce your pet to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when boating which sadly, many owners do not do. Rinse your pup off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from his fur and try to keep him from drinking pool water which contains chlorine and other chemicals that can upset his stomach.
DO NOT let them linger on hot asphalt. His sensitive paw pads can burn easily.
Give your baby a lightweight Summer haircut which helps prevent overheating.
Know the warning signs of overheating. They include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. Others include seizures, bloody diarrhea and vomit along with elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees.
During warmer months, the ASPCA sees an increase in injured animals as a result of “High-Rise Syndrome” which occurs when pets (mostly cats) fall out of windows or doors. They can be seriously or fatally injured. Pet owners need to know this is completely preventable by keeping all unscreened windows or doors closed and make sure adjustable screens are tightly secured.
Animals with flat faces such as Pugs and Persian cats are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart and lung diseases should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.
In closing, our pets are valuable and a big part of our families, so let’s treat them with that extra loving care during hot Summer days and AT ALL TIMES OF THE YEAR!
NO PARKING! Never, ever leave your animals along in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, a parked car can become a furnace in no time... even with windows open..... which could lead to a fatal heat stroke. Also
