Scenic campgrounds ACROSS NORTH AMERICA

T

housands of campsites litter the North American landscape, providing an opportunity for campers of all ages and interests to find a place to call home for a few days. Many campsites feature some spectacular scenery and other attractions that make them coveted spots to pitch a tent. Here's a look at a few camping locations that boast incredible views. • Bartlett Clove Campground, Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska: This remote and stunning campground offers views of crystal blue glacial water with a thick forest that surrounds the shoreline. Visit in the summer when the days are long and warm. • Hanakoa Campsite, Napali Coast State Wilderness Park, Kauai, Hawaii: The Napali Coast is recognized as one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world and camping here can feel like you're camping in paradise. Cliffs, waterfalls, and streams make this location picturesque. • Garden Key, Tortugas National Park, Florida: Tortugas National Park is a remote series of islands which are accessible after a two-hour ferry ride from Key West. It offers a tropical camping experience under mangrove trees, sitting on the edge of beautiful blue waters. Lighthouses and historic forts are adjacent, while one of the world's largest barrier reef systems can be steps from your tent. • Jedediah Smith Campground, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, California: If you're intrigued by the opportunity to camp beneath towering, ancient redwoods, look no further than this campground. Camp among the natural beauty with plenty of solitude and space. It's possible to spot black bear, river otters, bobcats, and other indigenous animals while traversing 20 miles of hiking trails. • Buttle Lake and Ralph River Campgrounds, Strathcona Park, Canada: Visitors can behold the view from Golden Hinde, the highest peak on Vancouver Island, which towers at 7,210 feet. Also, worth checking out is Della Falls, the highest

cascade in Canada, which requires a multi-day excursion by boat and foot. Soaring mountain peaks, waterfalls and rivers also are accessible within these campgrounds. • Assateague Island, Maryland National Seashore: The scarcity of tree cover on the island offers nearly unblemished views of miles of ocean. Campers can enjoy herds of wild horses and the siren's call of the beach and ocean. While open year-round, late summer and early fall are the most comfortable time for camping. • Watchman Campground, Zion National Park, Utah: This campground is surrounded by rocky peaks, juniper woodlands and massive sandstone cliffs. Bike trails along the Virgin River and other hiking opportunities help set this campground apart. Breathtaking sunsets also attract thousands of visitors to this area of the country. Camping is made even more special when visitors spend time at a stunning campsite with awe-inspiring views. H

HOW TO HONOR FIRST RESPONDERS This fall marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The attacks on September 11, 2001 remain the deadliest terror attacks in world history, claiming more than 2,900 lives and causing countless injuries and long-term health problems for tens of thousands of civilians and first responders. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will no doubt evoke responses that span the emotional spectrum. Sadness may dominate such responses, but the anniversary of 9/11 also is a great time to reflect on the efforts of first responders. First responders played a vital role on 9/11, and many lost their lives and/or suffered long-term health consequences resulting from their selfless efforts to save innocent victims of the attacks. In the two decades since the 9/11 attacks, first responders have continued to make countless sacrifices to ensure their communities are safe and peaceful places to call home. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is a great time to recognize the efforts of first responders and honor them for all they do. 1. Donate to local fire departments. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 54 percent of active firefighting personnel are volunteers. Many of those volunteer firefighters work for underfunded departments that need financial support. Donating to such departments is a great way to show first responders how much their efforts are appreciated. Donations may be used to purchase new equipment, upgrade existing facilities, provide vital training, and/or improve response times, the latter of which can increase the likelihood that firefighters make it through calls safe and sound. 2. Back legislation to support wounded first responders. Many first responders suffer significant mental and physical injuries while on the job. Various nonprofit organizations help wounded first responders who may need to make modifications to their homes or purchase costly equipment to get through their daily lives. But nonprofit organizations cannot go it alone in support of wounded first responders. Citizens can do their part by promoting and voting for local, state, and national legislation that makes it easy for wounded first responders to get the help they need, when they need it. In addition to urging local politicians to support such legislation, private citizens can utilize social media to promote proposals and other efforts to support wounded first responders. Many 9/11 first responders are still fighting for government-backed support to treat injuries suffered 20 years ago, and a vocal citizenry can be a strong asset in their fight and the fight of countless others in need of help. 3. Commit to supporting first responders year-round. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will call attention to the efforts of first responders on that day 20 years ago as well as the countless times since then that these brave men and women have served their communities. But first responders deserve vocal, year-round support. Make a concerted effort to thank policemen, firefighters, EMTs, nurses, and doctors in your community whenever you interact with them and urge others to follow suit. First responders play a vital role in communities across the globe. H September 2021 | HOME | 5

HOW TO BE A GREAT CAMPSITE COOK Nature enthusiasts often cherish the time they get to spend around a campfire. Whether you're telling scary stories, having a few drinks after a long hike, or just relaxing and gazing up at a starry sky, time spent around a campfire is a unique experience that can make for an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of daily life. There's much campers can do around a campfire, and that includes cooking. Campfire cooking may not require campers to learn advanced techniques practiced by their favorite celebrity chefs. However, there are a few tricks campers can try as they attempt to create a well-balanced, nutritious, and delicious campfire meal. • Create a menu and gather ingredients ahead of time. No one wants to take a spice rack with them into the woods. But that doesn't mean campfire cooking must lack seasoning and other special touches that are easy to add when cooking at home. Make meal planning part of your pre-trip preparation. Measure out ingredients ahead of time and store spices and other items in their own sealed and labeled containers. • Pack some fresh ingredients as well. Fresh ingredients like garlic cloves can be brought along without taking up much space. Vegetable lovers can chop their greens the night before their trip and store individual servings to ensure fireside meals are as nutritious as they are delicious. • Bring some small tools along. Small cooking tools that won't take up much space can be brought along to up the flavor factor even more. For example, a garlic press is about the size of a screwdriver and can be used to peel, crush and mince fresh cloves. The garlic can then be added to the pan in which you're sauteing some fresh vegetables for some instant, easily created flavor. Another small and handy tool to take along is a portable digital food thermometer. This can

6 | HOME | September 2021

ensure meats and poultry are cooked to perfection, helping campers enjoy foods that don't dry out over the flame. • Don't forget foil. It's easily overlooked, but aluminum foil is a useful commodity for a campfire cook. Campfire cooking surfaces may not be large enough to prepare every camper's food all at once, forcing cooks to cook courses or sides one at a time. Aluminum foil can keep cooked foods hot while the rest of the meal is still over the flame. Foil also can be used to cook foods like vegetables over a flame without causing them to wither or dry out. Campfire cooking can be taken to a more flavorful level with a few simple tricks. H

OUTDOOR ISSUE

MAKE MINIMAL IMPACT WHEN ENJOYING THE GREAT OUTDOORS Protecting the environment and living by the principles of leaving no trace behind may seem insignificant until a person considers the combined effects of millions of people traveling to the same outdoor points of interest. Over time, simply walking or moving through wild areas can degrade natural surroundings. The U.S. National Park Service reminds nature lovers that everyone has a role in protecting wild spaces. Park visitors should be conscious of how their behaviors affect animals, plants, ecosystems, and even other people. The concept of the Leave No Trace program is comprised of seven principles. These can serve as a starting off point of reference when taking part in outdoor activities. Leave No Trace courses are available nationwide. Here's a look at the seven principles. 1. PLAN AND PREPARE Planning helps outdoor enthusiasts accomplish their goals safely and with preserving natural resources in mind. Knowing regulations, visiting in small groups, scheduling trips to avoid busy times of year, and thinking about ways to minimize damage should all be part of the planning process. 2. TRAVEL AND CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES. Durable surfaces are those designed to be used as maintained trails and campsites. They include gravel, rock, dry grasses, and snow. Visitors should avoid walking on natural vegetation and trailblazing. Stick to existing trails and campsites. 3. PROPERLY DISPOSE OF WASTE "Carry in/carry out" means trash should be packed up and disposed of in proper receptacles. In addition, inspect surroundings for spilled food or litter. Waste also applies to wastewater and human waste. 8 | HOME | September 2021

Proper disposal of wastewater can help prevent contamination of the ground and natural water surfaces. Learn how to properly handle waste based on the site you will be visiting.

5. MINIMIZE CAMPFIRES When fires are needed, use established fire rings, pans, or mound fires. Consider using a lightweight camp stove for cooking and a lantern for illumination. Keep fires small and only use downed and dead wood.

6. RESPECT WILDLIFE Outdoor enthusiasts should never feed or approach wild animals; observe from a distance. Control pets or leave them at home if they will disturb animals. Avoid visiting certain areas during mating and nesting seasons.

4. LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND Do not take vegetation or other structures from natural areas. Avoid digging or modifying sites. Also, do not touch cultural or historical structures and artifacts.

7. BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS You will not be the only person trying to enjoy nature. Therefore, keep voices and other noises low. Camp quietly and let the sounds of nature prevail. Maintain distance from other campsites and groups. Try to blend into the surroundings as much as possible. Nature lovers should do their best to minimize their impact on their natural surroundings, which can help protect these spaces for years to come. H
