Kitti’s Corner

Kitti’s Corner

By Kitti Kleinedler

I am writing this on the day of the Snow of 2020. There are four beautiful inches of snow adorning trees, homes, and streets of Cresswind. (I am taking a gamble that there will not be any more between now and publication of this article.) One resident posted on Facebook some breath-taking photos of the community all covered in snow. Soon the spring trees will blossom, flowers will bloom, and green will crowd out the brown winter grass. We are so lucky to be surrounded by such natural beauty. As I drive through the community, I appreciate all that residents do to their homes and yards to amplify the pleasing visual aesthetics that abound. And as the days get warmer, many of you will start planning for this year’s enhancements and improvements. Please review chapters 5-2 and 5-3 in the Rules and Regulations before implementing any changes. The Architectural and Landscape Guidelines have been thoughtfully crafted to maintain the highest standards for the properties in Cresswind. The application process is quite simple and the turnaround for approval is timely.

Two issues I said I would remind residents of are 1. Exterior painting and 2. Flowers around the mailboxes. The Georgia sunshine is tough on paint. Regardless what the paint can says, paint in some places is only good for 4 or 5 years. Please take a close look at your home and determine if the paint is faded. Garage doors are very telling. Take a good look and walk around your home. If your home looks pastel or tired, it is time for a fresh coat of paint.

Flowers around the base of the mailboxes may look nice, but they are not allowed. You will be asked to remove any plantings UNLESS you have written approval from way back before this rule was instituted. And some residents do. So, if you see flowers around someone’s mailbox, they have probably been “grandfathered in” and have the necessary permission allowing them to plant. Still any such flowers will have to be contained and not allowed to spill on to the sidewalk or curb. MTScapes will be repainting the mailboxes that have been damaged by weed trimmers. I look forward to the many ways that beauty blossoms throughout Cresswind in the spring.

Architectural Review Committee Are you looking for a brighter 2020? What you need to know before you replace the Exterior Lights on your home.

The Architectural Review Committee’s (ARC) mission is to preserve and enhance the aesthetic qualities of Cresswind at Lake Lanier for the enjoyment of all current and future homeowners while protecting and growing the value of our homes. The ARC guidance is found on our Cresswind website under the Resources heading. From the Resources drop-down menu, select Community Rules & Regulations, then select Rules & Regulations Manual. The links to ARC application forms can also be found here. Chapter 5-2, Architectural of the Cresswind at Lake Lanier Rules and Regulations Manual, states that “all changes to the exterior of a Cresswind at Lake Lanier (CLL) residence require ARC approval in advance of starting the work.” So, written approval from the Community Manager (First Services) is needed prior to beginning work. This means that all homeowners need to go through the ARC process before they add to or change their existing exterior lights. As with most guidance, the ARC guidance is not all inclusive. In cases not specifically covered by the guidelines, the ARC will consider whether the request meets the general principles of Cresswind’s aesthetics. And, as always, Cresswind residents may contact the ARC prior to submitting a change request to discuss their proposed change.

By Debbie Seymour Following is some informal guidance developed by the ARC to help homeowners in this process: For Kolter homes, exterior lights should be black, oil rubbed bronze, or dark gray. They should be of craftsman design with glass panels. They may have scroll or decorative metal work above or below the lighted section. They should hang from the wall and be rectangular in shape or similar to the homeowner’s existing lights. They should have a single bulb. The glass can be frosted, clear or ribbed. They may have motion sensitive ability. The lights can be a maximum of 20 inches high, including any decorative metal work, and no more than 12 inches wide. Levitt home owners may choose lights similar to the existing exterior light fixtures on their homes, or convert to a Kolter style light. If they convert to a Kolter style light, they would then follow the above criteria. You will need to supply a picture of the lights you would like to install as part of your ARC request. As a precaution, we recommend ensuring you can return the lights if you purchase them prior to receiving ARC approval. Have fun picking out your new lights! It is time to “Light up the darkness.” Bob Marley Three examples of lights that meet the ARC’s informal exterior light guidance.

Cresswind CARE Committee By Judy Brannan

Need help with meals during surgery, recovery, or during cancer treatments? Need access to medical equipment, such as walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, etc.? Need information about alternative facilities and in-home care options? The Cresswind CARE Committee is available to help you. In existence for about 18 months, we have a Team Leader for each Phase in Cresswind. These phases now have representatives as a contact point in each section and on almost all streets. Here is a breakdown of leaders in your area: Phase I — Judy Brannan Phase II — Maura Williams and Rose Blum Phase III — Dolores Richardson and Betty Le Blanc The CARE Committee is in the process of

distributing postcards to each household in the

community. These cards state the mission of our

committee, as well as the scope of what we can do for you. Keep this card in a handy place for quick reference when you need it.

Please reach out if you need help. That is why

we were created, but we do not always hear about everyone who needs help.

Greetings from Common Ground, Your Community Garden By Sarah Galshack

Lots is happening in the New Year. We will be focusing on “Pollinators.” Over 100,000 varieties of insects are plant pollinators and the Community Garden is doing our best to attract many of those. We will be expanding our plantings of pollinator plants in order to attract these pollinators to the garden. Several of our guest speakers will be focusing on this topic, including talks on birds, Monarch butterflies, honey bees, solitary bees, and fall pollinator plants. Monthly meetings are scheduled every second Thursday.

The new Serenity Garden, adjacent to the Community Garden, is underway. The wooded lot is being transformed into a native plant garden with trails and benches for the enjoyment of Cresswind residents. We have begun the planting of native shrubs and perennials, the trails are marked off, and we are working on plans to add several benches. While it will take two or three years to fully develop the Garden, it will be available for visitors by this spring. We are planning to host several fun events for residents in the Community Garden this spring and summer; so watch for further information. Cresswind residents interested in ongoing updates about our garden activities, monthly informational meetings, and garden volunteer activities may email Dave Rusk at dhrusk@msn.com. to be included on our mailing list as a “Friend of the Garden.” Happy Gardening and may spring come early! The President’s View

Greetings from your HOA Board of Directors as we enter the next phase of our great community. I am pleased to take this opportunity to address our residents from my vantage point, which I will call the President’s View. I will offer you some thoughts and perspectives for your considerations and accept your suggestions and comments. I am honored to assume this leadership role as President of the Cresswind HOA and will use my energies and experience, as well as reliance on our Board Members, FirstService Residential as well as our Committee and Club Leaders and the many Resident Volunteers to guide us through 2020 and beyond. As we look ahead to the challenges and opportunities, we will be facing in 2020, we will be addressing both some existing and new issues. I want to thank our previous Boards for guiding us to this point in our history and welcome our new Board Members, Landy Johnson, John Stevens, and Larry Letendre. Your 2020 Board has much to consider and accomplish in the upcoming months. We are excited to contemplate and move forward with our selfgovernance as Kolter, our Developer, concludes the sales of the remaining homes. We have been preparing for this event for many years and the reality appears to be close at hand. With Leadership in place, along with our extensive Community Programs, Clubs and our Management Company, First Service, we are well positioned for the future. We are also welcoming our Community new Lifestyle Director, Elizabeth Zappi, to assist us in growing our programs and adding some new ones to the current

mix. We look forward to Elizabeth’s engagement in Cresswind and her energies and creativity as we continue to grow and follow the journeys which lie ahead. Your new Board Leadership Team has begun reaching out to the Committee and Club Leadership as well as Residents to discuss and set new initiatives and goals for this year. We will continue to count on our Residents and Volunteers who have helped make Cresswind what it is today. Their efforts and energies have proved instrumental in the shaping of Cresswind to make this Community the best it can be. Please feel free to contact myself or any of our Board Members, or Kitti Kleinedler, our Community General Manager with any questions, concerns or suggestions you may have. Please set aside some time during the year to attend our Open Board Meetings to learn more about Cresswind. I look forward to a great year ahead for all of us in Cresswind. Regards, Dan Gershkowitz

Welcome Committee News By Sue Joninas

Our Cresswind Welcome Committee of ten members has been hard at work contacting new residents. We held a Newcomer’s Orientation in the Ballroom in December 2019 for those new residents closing on houses. Approximately 55 residents attended this presentation by MTScapes, First Service, various committees, and our HOA. They were also able to pick up information about Gainesville and surrounding Hall county. The next New Resident Orientation will be in March 2020. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four weeks of closing, please contact me at sjoninas@gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents!! Welcome to Cresswind!

Health & Fitness Committee

By Laurie Solomon

Our New Year “New You Health Fair” held on January 18th was a resounding success. The Health and Fitness Committee would like to thank the over 500 residents for supporting this event. We had over 47 vendors including various screenings offered by Northside Hospital and Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Thank you also goes out to our Personal Fitness Trainers for offering free consults to Cresswind residents. The sign-up sheet is still available outside of the gym office. On February 27th, we had Amy Roark, a Registered Dietician from Northside Hospital, speak on nutrition and how it affects our health. I came across a statement that really resonates. “Americans have more food to eat than any other people and more diets to keep them from eating it.” The belief that there is one perfect diet or food

plan is bogus. Changing the way you eat is a gradual process and cannot be accomplished without lifestyle changes. To many people, a diet implies a temporary situation with strict guidelines and deprivations. Lifestyle changes include a food plan that you can live with on a daily basis for the rest of your life and exercise that you can sustain on a regular basis. Any diet that promises a certain amount of weight loss in a given time and sounds too good to be true, probably is. Any food plan that completely eliminates certain food groups is not a health-conscious eating plan. Our palettes are attuned to eating foods from all of the food groups and eating enough protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fat supply our bodies with needed nutrients to keep our metabolism functioning efficiently. If you are considering a lifestyle change, individual health issues should be taken into consideration and conferring with your physician is advisable. We look forward to 2020 being your best year for any lifestyle changes you plan to make!

Landscape Committee By Linda Furgerson

The spring planting season will soon be upon us and the Landscape Committee is looking forward to receiving all the Landscape Requests. Our promise is to get your Landscape Requests reviewed and a response back to you as quickly as possible. To help make that a more efficient process for everyone here are a few things you need to know: Landscape Requests are required if you are: • Removing existing trees and/or shrubs on your property • P lanting trees and/or shrubs that will significantly alter the existing landscape design. This includes planting new varieties of trees or shrubs that do not currently exist on the property, or installing new beds and/or extension of existing beds You do not need a Landscape Request if you are planting annuals or perennials in existing beds. No request is needed if you are replacing dead shrubs with identical or similar plants. As a reminder, please refer to the Landscape area in the Cresswind Rules and Regulations Manual for a list of plants that are on the DO NOT plant list.

If you are submitting a Landscape Request, that request must include: • Signed application • List of plants including varietal name (for example, if it is a dwarf variety) •S chematic drawing showing where the plants will be placed • P lat of the property showing property lines and any existing easements

Mike Martin, dds Ben Martin, dMd

We strive to create “customers for life” and believe that each patient deserves the extra care and attention that we would want for our own family members.

The more complete the submission, the quicker the Landscape Committee can review and make its approval or recommendations. Do not remove or plant anything in Common areas unless it has been approved by the Landscape Committee. Most importantly, Corps of Engineering Property fingers itself throughout numerous areas within Cresswind. These are considered “wilderness areas.” Corps of Engineering Property is protected under a “seedling to rot” policy. What that means is any vegetation (trees or otherwise) on Corps property is protected and cannot be removed, even if it is dead and unsightly. In rare cases, trees that are a potential hazard to nearby structures can be removed. However, any removal requires a permit issued by the Corps of Engineers. Unfortunately, the fines for removing any vegetation on Corps property are very significant for the individual, and can also affect Cresswind as a whole.

Cresswind Chorus: New Beginnings

The Women continued their study of Paul’s Letters, while the Men continued with their study of the Book of Genesis. The Men also received a presentation from one member who toured The Holy Land. The Way completed a study of the Book of Matthew. Several Couples Bible Studies continue to meet in private homes in the community. All of these various groups are open to all residents regardless of the levels of Bible knowledge as we read, teach, share and learn. Plus, we have no dues!

After a successful Holiday Music Celebration with four sold out concerts, the Cresswind Community Chorus began preparation for their Spring Music Spectacular in January. Dates for the spring concerts are April 23rd through April 26th.

By Dave Dittmeier

The Bible Study Clubs continued the monthly Nondenominational Service with guest speaker Charlie Phillips from Westminster Presbyterian Church. The Nondenominational Services are held the first Sunday of the month and are open to all residents.

By Chuck Bridwell

Music this spring will include songs like: Blue Skies, Stand By Me, Lean on Me, Climb Every Mountain, Y’all Come, I Say a Little Prayer, Hernado’s Hideaway and much more. Lots of variety and lots of fun. New members are welcome and there is no audition required. Cost for new members for the spring is $10.

Cold, Rainy Weather Can’t Slow The Social Singles! By Susan Lahey

The Social Singles, who now number more than 91 members, have avoided the “Winter Blues” with a wide variety of enjoyable activities. In addition to our regular activities which include bowling and exploring new restaurants for lunch, we started the New Year with a White Elephant Extravaganza, attended by more than 60 of our members. Not only was it an opportunity to offer unusual gift opportunities to the party goers, but it was so much fun that it will certainly be repeated in the future.

Valentines Day was celebrated this year with “Tacos R My Valentine” on February 14th. Moe’s catered and there was a margarita bar – yes, this promised to be a popular event! Looking ahead to March, a group will be going to Athens for lunch and the UGA Gymnastics meet, where the Gymdogs will face Missouri on the 14th. Do not be surprised if a group decides to show up for the 2020 SEC Championship right down the road at the Infinite Energy Arena in Duluth on March 21st. Meanwhile, our committee is hard at work planning a spring trip to Asheville, NC, to visit the Downton Abbey exhibit at the Beautiful Biltmore Estate.

Community Travel Club By Pam Papciak

The Cresswind Travel Club (CTC) has many exciting trips planned for this year. These excursions provide new memories and opportunities to meet Cresswinders and build new friendships.

The CTC Shen Yun trip at the Cobb Energy Center was fantastic. The weather was perfect, the show’s performers’ thrilling, the costumes colorful and the ride home relaxing while enjoying wine and cheese with friends.

In February, we went to the Booth Western Museum in Cartersville, which is such a delight. Finding top-notch pioneer and western art here in Georgia is so unexpected. The Etowah Mounds is a Georgia treasure that dates back to when prehistoric indigenous peoples occupied the area.

The Taste of Gainesville is our featured March trip. It is a must-do for all residents to get to know our city. The venues are varied and a few are: Brenau Gallery, Elachee Nature Center, Northeast Georgia History Center and Left Nut Brewery. These venues will draw you back again and again.

By popular demand, the Atlanta History Center is being offered again in April because of last year’s long Wait List. The trip includes: The History Center, Cyclorama, Swan House, TulleSmith House, and the Swan Coach House for lunch! You will definitely want to be part of this trip. And the azaleas in the gardens will be blooming. Be sure to bring your checkbook to the March 5th meeting to reserve your space before the trip sells out again. Everyone is invited to join us at our Thursday, March 5th General Meeting in the Ballroom at 4:00 pm. To enjoy any of our trips you need to be a CTC member for only $5. Hope to see you there!

Dance Rhythms

By Wendy O’Hanlon

Dance Rhythms club offers a variety of dance routines including contemporary, African moves, Latin mix, and hip hop. Each dance emphasizes movement of upper extremities and basic repetitive dance steps most often facing the front, making the class unique from line dance. Dance sneakers are best but a supportive athletic shoe with less “grip” to the sole is a good substitute. Dance Rhythms attendance for the first session in January was so well attended an additional hour was added at 3 pm for two months. In order to accommodate the ability to move safely and comfortably, the Sunday time at 3 pm may continue. Please check the Activities calendar and contact Wendy at golfgirl2011@att.net for any questions. FYI, men attend as well!

Genealogy Club

By Dave Dittmeier

The Genealogy Club continues to provide new genealogical resources for its members. Recently, one member found a website of individuals who were interred in Concentration/Labor Camps during WWII and what happened to those who were displaced after the war. Other topics included Researching Court Records, A Method for Reading Worn Out Headstones, the 1800 Census, and Developing and Naming File Folders for Research. The Genealogy Club is open to all residents who may have an interest in tracing their family tree regardless of your level of expertise. We are here to assist each other. Plus, we have no dues!! You might be a genealogist if…...you never have enough storage space.

Cooking Club Always Keeping Busy By Lisa Giblin

The Cooking Club began 2020 with our complimentary Open House to all Cresswind residents. This event covered the 2020 event schedule which is contained in the Cooking Club binder in the Clubhouse. Attendees signed up for events that interested them while they sampled delicious food and drinks.

I can’t say enough wonderful things about the job Fockele Garden Company did with our yard. Their plan met our goals to soften the view with colorful plants and attract birds and butterflies. The sound and sparkle of the fountain especially attracts wildlife. Not only do we enjoy hearing the babbling brook from inside, but I find myself drawn to sitting outside to listen and watch. It’s very calming. Thanks for creating a wonderful retreat for us and a haven for wildlife. —Linda and Gordon Potter

Cresswind Veterans Club By Bill Edmondson

Casino Night was held February 22nd and considered our biggest fundraising event of the year! Specific results and photographs of the evening will be posted in the next issue of Waterfall…for now: PLEASE THANK AND SUPPORT OUR CASINO NIGHT DONORS GOLD DONORS Milton Martin Honda Sherwin Williams SILVER DONORS Auto Fitness Dakota Kangas LLC, Construction Services Debbie Cortjens, Realtor Cadillac of Lake Lanier BRONZE DONORS Chastain Insurance Agency Douglas Residential Renovations Fockele Garden Company Vickie Gassman, Realtor Georgia Closet Lawson Air Conditioning & Plumbing Millie’s Drapery & Decorating Milton Martin Toyota Moore’s Wealth Management Deb & Ernie Seymour/SLAC The Blind Guide Throughout 2020, our members will continue to focus on supporting

veterans in need; we have several specific areas of service mentioned below and intend to report primarily success stories of our efforts in subsequent Waterfalls. • Helping Hands…financial donations are used to help the needs of veterans in the Gainesville and Hall County area. Each veteran’s request for assistance is carefully vetted by appropriate organizations before we receive, and then our board will carefully review and vet each one before issuing funds. • Veterans Court…our members support veterans in the Hall County Superior Court as mentors. Veterans Treatment Court is a national program established in 2010, to help those veterans who may come out of the service with mental health disorders due to trauma or substance abuse and subsequently find themselves in jail. This program provides legal advice, assistance in getting medical/psychological help, and assigning a mentor to help guide them through the program (where we get involved). Once assigned, we actively support with guidance and direction to keep the veteran on an in-depth treatment plan designed to help them make the right choices and stay out of jail. • Employment Counselling…a collaborative arrangement between our members and the Georgia Dept of Labor veterans’ staff, we provide seminars for job-seeking military veterans and meet one-on-one to critique their resume, share interview techniques and best practices, and provide career guidance. • Hospice for Veterans…in conjunction with the Northeast Georgia Hospice in Gainesville, our veterans provide service recognition to veterans in hospice. During a brief ceremony visitation, we present a blanket from the veteran’s military branch, a medal of recognition, and a certificate thanking them for their service to our nation. Some training is required to be certified as a Hospital Volunteer, and the rewards are well worth it. During a recent hospice visitation, our service recognition was for a World War II veteran, 100 year-old female who served in the Army. Surrounded by many of her family members, discussions centered on what she did in the Army…her primary job was to teach the newly drafted how to type and surprisingly how to swim. At one point she was asked if the men actually listened to her, and in a low but steady voice replied, “they better had!” After a closing prayer, the veteran and family expressed appreciation and were overwhelmed with this service…as is typical and why it is so rewarding. • Ride Sharing Services…our newest service area, in partnership with ITN Lanier, is to implement and operate ride services for Hall Co veterans needing transportation to/from the VA medical facility in Oakwood, GA. If you would like to serve with us in any of these areas and help our veterans and their families for their dedication and service to our country, please come visit us! Our website (https://www.cresswindveterans.org/) has contact info for all areas…looking forward to serving with you!

Living Stylishly with Neighbors By Sue Garcia

January 27th was a delightful evening for 48 ladies as they listened to a presentation by Samantha Mehl, owner of North Georgia Olive Oil Company, and feasted on a pasta dinner plus salad prepared by the chef of Braselton Brewing Company. The night began with a tasting of olive oils and balsamic vinegars plus information about the value of using these in foods and diet. Fresh pasta was made and used in a delicious dish that all enjoyed. On February 20th, 25 ladies attended the Gainesville Theatre Alliance production of The Bra and Panty Club at the Ed Cabell Theatre with many dining at Little Italy Restaurant before the play. Mark your calendars for an event planned for March 18th. A flower arranging demonstration will take place in the Ballroom followed by a buffet lunch currently planned for 60 members. Plus, another trip to the Americas Mart is coming up on April 6th. Just a reminder, dues must be paid by March 31st to attend events. This includes those renewing as well as new members. If dues are not paid by March 31st, you will not be able to join again until 2021. New residents to Cresswind will still be accepted throughout the year. Checks for $5 may be deposited in the club mail box located in the back right corner of the clubhouse lobby. Hope to see all join in the fun!

Model Railroad Club By Bill Edmondson Latest news from the Model Railroad Club:

We want to thank all Cresswind residents and their children/grandchildren for visiting our layout display during Breakfast with Santa; we had over 200 folks viewing our models, asking questions, and watching us run trains as we brought 2019 to a close. Club members worked diligently to bring in these modules and accessories, assemble with precision, and gladly answered any questions visitors may have had.

Our club quickly got into the new year with a visit to the home of Ron Artelli, a significant collector of Lionel and “O” gauge trains. His massive layout is about 500 square feet and capable of running several trains at one time. In February, we set up our layout for a 2-day event, including several ‘how to’ clinics, an open house for residents to observe train operations, and plenty of ‘free time’ devoted to just operating trains.

Later this spring, we have plans to visit other layouts in the greater Atlanta metro area, attend Model Railroad Shows, and start planning a trip to Chattanooga’s RailFest in September. Our club is open to any Cresswind resident who enjoys building and operating model railroads…if you have interest, come visit with us!

By Dan Skeels The new officers for the Sports and Games Club are as follows: Dan Skeels, President, Johanna Koletsos, Vice President, Bill Langan, Treasurer, Joyce Allen, Secretary, and Bob Bobkowski, Member at Large. Our club’s purpose is to help promote and support new or smaller games and sports activities that choose not to become clubs or might need some assistance for startup such as Basketball, Mini Golf, Cornhole, Bocce Ball, etc. Each of these activities have leaders that organize and support these individual activities. IF you have interest in helping with any of these activities or want more information about Sports and Games Club, contact one of the above officers/members. And of course, Sports and Games Club sponsors our popular Bingo Nights six times a year. Our next Bingo Night is St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th with Irish entertainment. We are planning to donate funds to a charity not yet determined. We will also donate revenues from one bingo night to our Cresswind Community Fund to be used in some manner to help out our community.

CNT Steps It Up!

By Wayne Blum This year will be slightly different for the theater group than past years. Instead of two performances, spring and fall, there will be a total of four! First up will be “Murder in The Air” by Peg Sheldrick. This is being performed as part of a Dinner Theater offering by the Cresswind Cooking Club. Dates are April 15th and 16th. Next up is the spring play “The Murder Room” by Jack Sharkey. Performance dates are May 14th through 17th. By the time you read this audition will have already been completed and the roles filled. The third offering will be “Always Patsy Cline.” The dates for this production are August 20th through 23rd. Finally, the fall play will be November 12th through 15th. The play is to be determined. So, you have plenty of options! These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, sound and lighting, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. In fact, it took well over 100 volunteers for our last play! If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater, please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting there is plenty to do “behind the scenes.”

Courage Starts Here “There are still a lot of battles I’m going through. My focus is to try hard, control my anger and do everything I can. I want to be a better version of myself. I feel like Eagle Ranch is helping me find my future.” Read more about Symone at EagleRanch.org/success

The dates are set for four key events this year. • May 16th, 10:00am-12:00pm: Community Kayak Day. This is a great opportunity for new and old Cresswind residents to try kayaking. The club’s members will provide the equipment and instruction. • June 19th, 4:00pm-6:00pm: Spring Members’ Meeting with a social and the semi-annual lottery for vertical kayak slots for July-December 2020. • September 12th, 9:00am-11:30pm. Skogies Paddle. We had a record number of participants in last fall event. Will we match or beat that record? • November 12th, 6:30-8:00pm. Fall Members’ Meeting with a social, election of Board for 2021, and the lottery for the vertical storage slots for January – June 2021. Watch Cresswind LL Daily Updates for meeting dates and times. Happy paddling!

This year’s Polar Express Tournament truly lived up to its name! On January 25th, 68 players (on 4-person teams) participated in the coldest Cresswind tournament to date. A big thank you to our tournament committee and to all of the volunteers who made this fun day possible. Congratulations to the players who braved the cold… you are ALL winners! Players are pictured below, and tournament results can be found on the Pickleball website (www. cresswindpickleball.com) The Pickleball Club hosted a very special Valentine’s Dinner/ Dance on February 14th for all of Cresswind. By the time this hits the press, we will have enjoyed a delicious meal (Cucina Milano) and fabulous entertainment (Betty Seni) all without braving traffic and securing holiday reservations at crowded restaurants. A Valentine’s Day to remember! We have a full schedule of tournaments, leagues, clinics and novice training planned for the balance of 2020, as well as our daily Open Play. As always, all things Pickleball can be found on the Pickleball website: (www.cresswindpickleball.com) Not a member? Dues are only $10 per year. Membership allows you to participate in all organized club events and receive weekly Pickleball email updates to keep you in the know! Adventures in Dining – Gourmet Dinner Group By Karen Silverthorn

March wrapped up the eighth year of Cresswind’s Gourmet Dinner Group. Members have gathered four times a year since 2012 to enjoy great gourmet meals while meeting new neighbors and making friends. Currently there are over 160 members on the Dinner Group roster. But this group may not be for everyone. The Gourmet Dinner Group differs from a casual or neighborhood gathering. Host houses put time and thought into making their ‘tablescape’ elegant and appropriately themed and memorable for their guests. Menus are chosen by the Steering Committee that are more elaborate and often use unusual or challenging ingredients. That is why ALL houses make the same recipes.

Review of menus for season 2020-21 will occur in April. If you have any great menus, simply submit a paper or electronic copy to any of the following members on the Dinner Group Steering committee: Ann Horne, Judy Brannan, Susan Kooistra, Pam Papciak, Regina Fuller, Mary Quisenberry.

How does it all come together? Menus are chosen based on availability of ingredients, ease of cooking and ability to divide up the courses for preparation. The recipes are retyped with graphics and verification of correct measurements and clear instructions. Each typed menu is double checked by two people to ensure clarity and accuracy. Weeks before each dinner, an evite is sent out to all members. NOTE: house and course assignments cannot be determined until we know exactly how many are attending AND thus how many houses we need to host. The actual assignment of people to a house

and course takes several hours to ensure couples have not been together at a Dinner Group event for the past 2 – 3 years. Because of this lengthy process, final assignments are only sent out to participants approximately 1 ½ weeks prior to the dinner. Anyone can join at any time during the year, but annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. If you are interested in joining, email the coordinator directly (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter.net) to be added to the Gourmet Dinner Group email list.

For each meal, all recipes are provided. There is always a total of 4 couples/pairs of people at each host home. For each dinner, we average 6 - 8 houses on the same evening, each using the same recipes and making the same courses. All food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house. Our mission is a simple one - to enjoy a delicious gourmet meal while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. Every meal is an adventure!

What’s Happening

Cresswind Tennis By Sandy Barmak

It was a busy fall for the Cresswind Tennis Club. Rain had thwarted most of our previous Round Robin Socials, but in November we finally achieved success. Despite rain the night before, it was a beautiful day and 24 players enjoyed playing tennis, socializing, and indulging in pizza and drinks. There is a lot more evening action on the courts now that we have begun Round Robin Socials the 3rd Friday of each month from 7– 9 pm. It is a great opportunity for those who work, or just cannot play during the daytime hours to participate, join the fun, and meet other tennis players in our community. Weather permitting our first Saturday morning Round Robin Social will be on April 25th at 9 am with Sunday at 1 pm as a rain date. If the weekend is a washout, we have reserved May 2nd and 3rd for the social. Everyone is invited to sign-up, come out and join the game of tennis, followed by food and festivities. The Ladies played in a new Silverball league with other local communities in the fall. USTA and ALTA are competitive, but Silverball is just a way to enjoy playing with other tennis lovers without worrying about team standing. It provided an opportunity for Cresswind players of all levels to be on the same team for the first time. There were multiple Spring, Summer, and Fall Clinics in 2019 which gave all levels of players an opportunity to improve their skills, learn some new strategies, and enjoy tennis outside of normal open or match play. A new Clinic was added in November-December for Novice-Beginner-Rusty Returnees (NBR), which led to some new players on the court! NBR and regular clinics began again in February and are continuing through April as players prepare for the competitive team tennis season. March winds bring in lots of activity on the courts as all of our competitive teams began play. We are fielding two Men’s Silverball teams captained by George Majesko and Dan Skeels. Our two Ladies USTA 3.0 teams are captained by Debbie Cortjens and Judy

Mota. Both Silverball and the Ladies USTA play Monday mornings. We appreciate the cooperativeness of the Pickleball Club in yielding us the courts on the occasions when we need all 6 courts. The men are playing on two Senior ALTA teams on Wednesday mornings. The B1 level team is captained by Bill Papciak and Mike Marsico and the C1 level team is captained by Rick Osterloh. New team members, women and men, are welcome to join at the beginning of each season. We hope you will come down to the courts to watch and cheer our Cresswind Tennis Teams to victory.

As the photos show, a festive time was had by all at our Holiday party in the Crow’s Nest. We feasted on an array of appetizers provided by our members and desserts supplied by the Tennis Club. Of course no Cresswind party would be complete without BYOB. A special thank you to Judy Mota & Shirley Osterloh for planning all our socials last year. More exciting social times are scheduled for the year ahead as Linda Merritt and Sylvia Slovis strive to keep our tennis club members active, engaged and well fed. Everyone is welcome to come out and play during our Open Play times which can be found on our website, https://cresswindll.wixsite. com/cwtennis. Be sure to check the website for notices of upcoming events and clinics. If you have any questions please contact our President, Sandy Barmak, at sandybarmak@gmail.com.

The Quilting Club By Evelyne Palmer

The Quilting Club began 2020 by making and donating two quilts to the Northeast GA Humane Society’s Fundraiser, Art with a Heart, and our plan is to participate in the Elachee Nature Center’s event this year. Our members also contributed five Military themed quilts which benefited the Veteran’s Club at their Casino Night fundraiser. We have delivered a total of 157 quilts to Legacy Link for Seniors in need in the Hall County and surrounding areas since we started this project in 2018 and have a delivery ready for the Quilts for Kids projects. The Club has activities planned for every month. In January, we took a road trip to Dahlonega to shop at The Common Thread Quilt Shop; February was our Birthday celebration luncheon, March will include a trip to Bulloch Hall in Roswell to the Art Quilt Exhibit and the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Gwinnett. One of our residents visited our meeting and spoke on a project for more Hall County in-need citizens and we are hoping to assist. If our Club does not participate as a whole, many members will work on their own. We welcome any resident to stop by and share their favorite quilt or quilting project with us. Contact Evelyne at hybiscus5@outlook.com to make arrangements. If you are a quilter but not ready to be a Club Member, have a project, technique, or talent to share, please consider sharing with our group.

We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 pm in the Arts and Craft room. Stop by, meet us and see the work we do. We do many quilting related projects, big and small, work at individual levels, and have fun! The Club is available to offer assistance to our fellow residents if you have any quilting projects you started and now have the time to finish them.
