CHÂTEAU ÉLAN WINERY & RESORT COMPLETES $25 MILLION RENOVATION The enchanting château and full-service winery nestled among North Georgia’s picturesque foothills, Château Élan Winery & Resort, today proudly announces the completion of its $25 million dollar comprehensive renovation. As the first major renovation since its inception in the mid-1980s, the full redesign ushers in the newest chapter in its storied history by introducing a fresh, yet timeless, modernized design, while still honoring the existing estate’s 16th centurystyle charm. Beckoning a new generation, the transformation includes a complete overhaul of 251 guestrooms and 24 suites, four new food and beverage outlets, the winery, as well as the resort lobby, with a facelift to the existing pool terrace and immersive spa “As we complete this renovation, it is clear how every decision was made to positively impact our guest experience,” said Neville Erasmus, general manager, Château Élan Winery & Resort. “We’re beyond proud to bring this vision to life and reintroduce the new Château Élan to our beloved repeat and new guests alike.” During the nine-month project, Atlanta-based interior and architectural design firm, BLUR Workshop, was tasked to lead the multi-million-dollar renovation formulating a design concept representative of the resort’s vast southern locale – inspired by the surrounding rolling hills and lush vineyards. Further defining its sense of place, the property is accessorized with local artwork and features a modern palate painted in variations of gray and taupe with pops of chartreuse, turquoise and gold, warmed by rich wood accents, elegant lighting, white Calcutta marble and industrial touches including tufted leather, wrought iron 6
and carved limestone. Giving a nod to its topography, the design also boasts vineyard inspired details throughout, with the most dramatic being a custom 1,400-piece glass chandelier hand-blown in the Crystal Valley of the Czech Republic, shaped to mimic the shifting grape vines along the vast rolling hills. Maximizing every square foot to enhance the resort’s public spaces, the renovation included: The full redesign of 251 guestrooms and 24 suites provides a sleek new look to compliment the overall resort, while incorporating modern enhancements for the needs of today’s guest. The rooms include custom designed carpeting, bathrooms with upgrades including freestanding vanity areas made of wood and stone, a color palette of greys and taupes to simplify the backdrop, allowing for pops of walnut, brushed oak and the studded, leather-tufted headboard to make a statement. The lobby was updated with its central location in mind. The space was dressed with leather tufted lounges, softened by a mix of fur and partnered pillows, wingback chairs, and limestone fireplace. The biggest addition to the lobby space February 2020
Community News was adding Le Petit Café – the coffee and wine bar complete with a curated gift shop. The Atrium was also fully transformed with white marble and natural details complimented by polished bronze and gold accents, in addition to adding a cozy, vintage-inspired library and 1,400-piece crystal chandelier dripping across the glass ceiling – evoking the shifting landscape of the vineyard. Adding flair to both flavor and design, four of the now ten food and beverage outlets were completely re-envisioned from everything including the décor to dining concepts and menus. A staple at Château Élan, Marc Bar & Restaurant has been reintroduced as a southern-inspired bar and chophouse with a completely refreshed menu and a special focus on artisanal libations. The restaurant also added a French oak, soapstone bar to the back of its space as a new gathering area. To anchor the grand space within The Atrium, the resort added a new Atrium Bar crowned with an iconic 40-foot Douglas fir wood sculpture, which was crafted to mimic the vineyard’s movement and be an interactive display, changing views as you drift through the space.
Versailles, the internationally-inspired American buffet led by Executive Chef Rodney Ashley was reimagined to compliment the new, simplistic design in the glass-topped Atrium – adding additional seating with pops of teal. The space also provides a new private dining room for groups. The all-new Louis’ House of Bourbon is a contemporary sports bar with the ambiance of an old-world speakeasy. With wood paneling, leather furniture, eclectic art, neon signage and a curated bourbon display behind the glowing amber bar, the lounge evokes southern charm while its oldworld accents recall the bar’s French namesake, Louis. “After years of planning, we’re humbled to experience the final product that now matches the level of service Château Élan has provided for decades,” said Keith Manning, vice president of asset management, Wheelock Street Capital. “The new design enhances the opportunity to deliver unmatched experiences and to welcome guests of all ages.” The Resort held a Grand Unveiling Celebration and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at the Chateau Elan Inn on January 14th, 2020.

POWER FOR THE PEOPLE Every audio and video system require power. Without proper power your system will not perform to its potential. Your system can experience failures from “lock ups” requiring reboots, devices can lose sync with each other, audio can sound muddy and video can lose its brilliance. Worst case scenario is that your equipment is damaged requiring repairs or most likely replacements. Having over 20 years of experience with power management devices I have seen on multiple occasion were systems up to $250K have been completely fried due to lightning and no use of a surge suppressor. Now most of us do not have a $250K AV system but even if you lost a $500 amplifier due to a surge would be disappointing. Most people when they think of surges they think of lightning. Lightning is dramatic! There is usually smoke, flames and damage to the building. Lightning is very rare depending on the region of the World you live in. The fact of the matter is, is that your home can experience thousands (that’s right, thousands) of surges a day. Yet there is no smoke, no flames and no drama. So, what gives? The longevity of your AV equipment if not properly protected. Where do these surges come from? The utility company must switch the power consumption from one grid to another grid to compensate for the load(s). This causes little surges. If you share a transformer with you neighbor their home can cause surges. I had a neighbor that loved to work on his 1979 Mustang. Every Saturday morning when he turned on his compressor in his garage it would cause a surge. Your own home can cause surges due to the HVAC system. Perhaps there was a time when you turned on a vacuum or a large February 2020
blender and notice the lights dim just for a second. Well guess what, that was a surge. Once again, no smoke or flames. The analogy that I like to use is a wine glass and a tea spoon. If I took an empty wine glass and started tapping it with the tea spoon what do you think would eventually happen? That glass will eventually crack or shatter leaving it useless. Your connected equipment is that wine glass where the tea spoon is representing the surges we get daily. Equipment left unprotected might need to be replaced 2 or 3 years down the road when if you used proper surge suppression your equipment can last decades. For a comprehensive surge suppressor, I look for two features. The first is the clamping voltage. This is the ceiling of the output of the surge suppressor. Look for 500VAC or less. Another feature I look for is over and under voltage protection. Voltage in our homes are supposed to be constant (120VAC in the United States). Of course, we do not live in a perfect world so we can see our homes voltage fluctuate. The most common condition is under voltage or also known as “brownouts”. This is common due to an overloaded grid. For example, you may see low voltages during summer when homes are using their AC units. Our AV equipment want to stay powered even with low voltage. This causes the equipment to get very hot and sometimes forcing the device to go into “thermal shutdown”. If you allow your devices to periodically go into thermal shutdown the device will eventually have a component fault in the power supply requiring repair or replacement. Over voltages can be caused by wiring faults such as an open neutral. An open neutral can cause a power swing of 80VAC – 240VAC. This will cause your devices power supplies to be damaged. In each case low and high voltages are damaging. Most of Panamax & Furman products have a design that monitors the incoming voltage and when the voltage goes dangerously high or low it disconnects the equipment for the power source. Once the power has stabilized the power conditioner will turn back on. The Panamax technology is Automatic Voltage Monitoring (AVM) while Furman’s technology is Extreme Voltage Shutoff (EVS). Power conditioners do not have to be expensive. Panamax and Furman have a product portfolio that starts at $39 all the way to $5K. Choosing one over the other really has to do with applications. All Panamax & Furman power conditioners not only offer surge suppression they also offer noise filtration as well. For this article we are focusing on surge suppression. The Panamax M4-EX, P-360 Dock and Furman SS-6B-PRO and PST8 are great surge suppressors that are cost effective. General rule with how much to spend on power is 10% of the cost of the system. If you invested $1K into your system you should spend at minimum $100 on power protection. Panamax & Furman have plenty of options within that price range that will not only protect your valued equipment but also have your system sound and look as the engineers intended. 11

HELPF U L T IP GUARD GATE ADDRESS
2585 AUTUMN MAPLE As many of you are well aware, GPS is our friend most of the time…. but unfortunately for many unfamiliar with our community it can lead them to the wrong gate to gain entrance into our community. This confusion can lead to frustration for those guests & vendors that are trying to gain entrance at a resident only gate and even for those maybe waiting in line behind them. So please make note of the Guard Gate address, it is 2585 Autumn Maple Drive and make a habit to provide it to those guests or vendors that are not familiar with our community.
