CHÂTEAU SOCIAL/RESIDENTS COMMITTEE MESSAGE Hopefully after all of this rain over the winter months our March will be full of sunshine to kick off Spring and many outdoor activities. March is always a very special time of the year in Chateau Elan and surrounding areas as we celebrate BIG for our St. Patrick’s Day events. Although the official holiday falls on Wednesday, March 17th the celebrations get started on March 13th with a Golf Cart decorating Pizza Party sponsored by Lanier Carts & Outdoor (see the post in the newsletter for more details). We are still working on confirming a date in April for a community garage sale and charity donation. We are not allowed to open the gates for anyone to enter for the garage sale however you may invite guests through your Dwelling Live Account. We will once again have a donation truck set up for items that you want to donate.

4

Date and details to come soon. Please note that we had a lot of really shy people attend the first Karaoke night at Sarazen’s Grill, thankfully the staff of Sarazen’s had some very talented performers. As a result, the Karaoke night has been changed to a Family Bingo Night. Typically it will be done on the 3rd Tuesday of every month, however it will be the 2nd Tuesday in March due to St. Patrick’s Day (see the post in the newsletter for more details) We would like to thank RSZ Interiors and Brookstone Painting for sponsoring the 2020 Easter Egg Hunt. Both sponsors are residents of Chateau Elan and we sincerely appreciate their support in making this event possible. Check out the Vendor Spotlight article by Brookstone on the latest trend of painted brick. Happy March!

Understanding Gastroesophagel Reflux Disease (GERD) What is Gastroesophagel Reflux Disease (GERD)?

Gastroesophageal reflux is a chronic disease that occurs when the contents of the stomach are pushed up or regurgitated into the esophagus (the tube that links the stomach and mouth). This usually occurs when the esophageal sphincter (valve between the stomach and esophagus) fails to close properly.

Common symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease:     

Chest discomfort Chronic cough Difficulty swallowing Frequent burping Heartburn

Nausea or throwing up Pain when swallowing Sensation of a lump in the throat Sore or hoarse throat

How to relieve the symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Gastroesophageal reflux does not present the same in each person, but there are some simple dietary or lifestyle changes that can help improve your symptoms. DON’T DO:  Wear tight fitting clothing  Eat smaller meals  Eat large meals  Elevate the head while sleeping or lying down  Lay down or sleep soon after a meal  Maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI) as  Consume acidic foods such as coffee, citrus drinks obesity is associated with an increase in reflux and carbonated beverages  Avoid smoking and the consumption of  Consume spicy foods alcoholic beverages

When to see a doctor? A visit to a physician is encouraged when symptoms persist or become worrisome after simple lifestyle changes have occurred. In addition, if over-the-counter medications have become regular to reduce discomfort you should consult a physician. If left untreated more serious conditions can occur such as narrowing of the esophagus, bleeding from the intestine due to esophageal ulceration, development of chronic hoarseness or cough, and in some cases a higher risk of esophageal cancer.

What to know about the consult:

Dr. Neeraj Sharma, a board certified gastroenterologist who specializes in digestive illness and disease, will evaluate your medical history, current and past symptoms and build a custom treatment plan specific to your condition. If further testing is needed, Dr. Sharma and his partners at Gastroenterology Associates of Gainesville, P.C. will provide the most advanced endoscopic testing and research options. GOOD INFO TO KNOW SHOULD I PAINT MY BRICK It is hard to go more than a few miles these days and not see some painted brick. It’s a popular finish on new construction, residential repaints and even commercial buildings. But the question is always “should I paint my brick”. There is certainly no standard answer, but some considerations can help you make the best choice.

WHAT PRODUCTS ARE USED: Believe it or not, Sherwin Williams has a self cleaning masonry coating. That’s right, it repels dirt and stains with rain or water rinsing. It also comes with built-in mildew resistance. This coating goes on without a primer. A thorough washing of the brick with a light bleach solution is the best first step. Once the brick is dry - 24 hours recommended - 2 coats of Loxon Masonry Coating is applied in the color of your choice. This is a very durable coating that should last longer than average house paint. While no guarantees can be made, 10-15 years could be expected. Maintenance should be minimal with only light power washing when mildew or algae growth is present.

AFTER

BEFORE

WHAT STYLE IS MY HOME: Is your home traditional? Painted brick can completely transform the look of your exterior. It can change an outdated brick color to a crisp, clean white, off-white or more neutral tan or gray. It will allow you to bring in darker accent colors on the trim, gutters or add a colorful front door. Is your home a classic brick ranch? Painting the brick will update the look and can add a Farmhouse feel to the property. If your house has

a front porch, consider wrapping the columns in cedar and adding cedar board and batten shutters.
