Kitti’s Corner

By Kitti Kleinedler

Change – transformation, mutation, modification . . . whatever you want to call it, it is all around us these days. And quite honestly, change is sometimes hard to abide. Nonetheless, I want to thank and commend Cresswinders for their ability and willingness to accept the changes that have been thrust upon them in almost every part of their lives. That is why we are #CresswindStrong. Some changes have been positive. We have had the change of seasons from winter to spring. That is always welcome except for the pollen, of course. We had the daylight saving time change last month which gave us that extra hour of daylight at the end of the day. And as I write this, sunset is set at 8:05 PM. Woo Hoo! Which reminds me, then or now is an excellent time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors. And the newest change to the front desk is the arrival of Patricia Elliott. She is the proud mom of four children and three grandchildren. She loves to bowl and claims to be very good at it. She also enjoys the outdoors where she can spend time fishing and camping and being in the mountains. Every year, she and her children go to the beach where they can play in the sand and walk on the pier. She will prove very capable of filling the shoes that Carolyn left behind, and she is quite anxious to meet the residents that she has heard so much about.

Architectural Review Committee Ahh, it is that wonderful time of year when our thoughts turn to …. gardening! With that in mind, here is some helpful information for those who want to know what has changed recently in the gardening “arena” at Cresswind. In the past, raised planting beds were not routinely approved at Cresswind, with the exception of the raised beds at our beautiful Community Garden. Residents are still strongly encouraged to use the Community Garden and take advantage of their available raised planting beds, but new guidance has been issued for Cresswind residents that want a raised garden bed in their own backyard. First, as a courtesy, please advise your neighbors of your hardscaping and planting plans. Second, remember that any new hardscape, including planting beds, must be approved by the Architectural Review Committee (ARC). This includes any raised or boxed beds or beds with any kind of structure or edging. Any new beds must not block gates or obstruct access by mowers to back or side yards. Your proposed raised bed can be up to a maximum of 4 feet by 8 feet and no more than 24 inches high. They have to be placed in the backyard and only one raised bed per household is allowed. They cannot be seen from the front of the house, and they cannot negatively affect water drainage. The raised beds can be constructed of stone, pavers, bricks or other materials approved by the ARC. Railroad ties with creosote are not permitted because they leach toxic chemicals

Covenants, Rules & Regulations Committee By Bob Goldmann

So, what is the Covenants, Rules and Regulations Committee?

The Covenants, Rules and Regulations Committee is made up of seven of your Cresswind neighbors who volunteer their time to act as the first level of appeal for residents who have been informed that they are in violation of either our charter or our rules and regulations to include those related to the ARC and the Landscape Committee. The committee, as requested by the HOA Board of Directors, does reviews of the community charter and the rules and regulations and when appropriate, provides suggested modifications to the Board. This keeps our charter, rules and regulations current with the everchanging needs of our community.

If we can answer any questions you might have, please feel free to contact a committee member. Committee members are listed on the Cresswind website. Page 6 | The Waterfall | May/June

By Debbie Seymour into the soil. Pressure treated wood, and composite decking products can be used, but plastic bricks or plastic-looking fake wood products are not to be used (a good test would be, “Would this be approved for use on a deck in Cresswind?”). The materials used should either blend with the house colors or be earth tones.

Once you have installed and planted your new raised bed, you may want to protect your plants from our Cresswind deer. Netting or poles are allowed but are limited to either black or dark green in color. Deer-type mesh fencing/netting may be used, with a maximum height of 5 feet measured from the ground to the top of the netting. Any netting poles should be securely fastened or placed so as not to lean at haphazard angles. Netting materials are limited to black UV protected polypropylene mesh or other materials as approved by the ARC, and must be replaced if deteriorating. Maximum netting squares are 1 inch. You are responsible for maintaining your raised planting bed and not allowing it to become an eyesore for your neighbors. The HOA Board can ask for the raised bed to be removed at the homeowner’s expense. Regardless, if and when you remove the bed, you are responsible for returning the ground underneath and around it to the original yard appearance. This may seem like a lot of rules, but it isn’t really, and remember the goal is to maintain the ambiance of our beautiful community for everyone’s enjoyment. Happy gardening!

Engineering and Facilities Committee By Rick Osterloh

Our Engineering and Facilities Committee supports the Board with management of our Infrastructure buildings, equipment, and common area’s installations. We evaluate, prepare cost estimates, and make recommendations for the Board’s consideration on our facilities. We are currently working on the paving project and evaluating costs and recommendations on several infrastructure items for positioning in budget planning activities. We also do special studies and work with Regulatory authorities on requirements our community is responsible for. Residents who have suggestions for Community improvement projects may contact the Board to consider adding it to the current list of projects under consideration for the future.

Welcome Committee News By Sue Joninas

Our Cresswind Welcome Committee of ten members has been hard at work contacting new residents, resales, and new homes. We held a Newcomer’s Orientation in the Ballroom in March 2020 for those new residents closing on houses since December. Approximately 20 residents attended this presentation by MTScapes, First Service, various committees, and our HOA. They were also able to pick up information about Gainesville and surrounding Hall county. The next New Resident Orientation will be in June 2020. If you do not hear from a Welcome Committee Member within four weeks of closing, please contact me at sjoninas@ gmail.com. We do not want to miss any new residents!! Welcome to Cresswind!

Landscape Committee by Linda Furgerson

What happens to your landscape request once it is submitted? We have made submitting a landscape request as easy as possible. You can access the landscape request form on the Cresswind website. In addition to the completed request, you must also submit: 1. Plant listing - including genus/species to help us better identify the exact plant being requested. We review this list to ensure the requested plant not only meets the current rules and regulations regarding size, but also to ensure no plants are on the current “do not plant list.” 2. Schematic diagram of the proposed plantings showing location on your lot. This is especially important if you are installing a whole new landscape, including addition or extension of landscape beds. 3. Plat map - this should have been included in your closing documents. This plat allows us to review property lines and existing easements associated with your lot to ensure your plans take these into account. Once you submit your package at the clubhouse, it is then forwarded to our committee for review. Each member independently reviews the request and provides feedback to the other members. If there are any issues or concerns, they are discussed until a consensus is obtained. Our committee is made up of volunteers with a variety of backgrounds. Each member brings their own area of special interest to the committee. On occasion we may request a site visit to your home to resolve some potential concerns. These concerns generally revolve Page 10 | The Waterfall | May/June

around plant locations or understanding drainage and water flow. Unfortunately, Georgia topography in this region can be a challenge. Homeowners cannot install any landscape design that impedes or restricts the natural flow of water. Homeowners will be held accountable if their landscape design causes damage to adjoining/adjacent properties. Once the committee has resolved any outstanding concerns or issues regarding your request, we notify First Services that your request has been approved, approved with concerns/suggestions, or denied. They then send the homeowner a notification letter. In the case of approval with concerns or denied, the concerns or justification for denial are clearly provided. We make every attempt to get your requests processed as quickly as possible. That is assuming a complete package has been supplied. The more complete or thorough your original submission, the faster it can be accurately processed. Please note however, the Landscape Committee cannot approve use of any non-living (hardscape) items. This includes hardscape items such as rocks, stones, or other non-living material. An additional request must be submitted to the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) for all hardscape items.

may be far off, Committee Corner

but the April 15 deadline for IRA contributions isn’t. You have only so many years to prepare for retirement. That’s why contributing to your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is so important. Fortunately, you still have time to maximize your 2015 IRA contribution before the April 15 deadline. By contributing now, your retirement savings can have more opportunity to grow. Even if you already have an IRA elsewhere, it’s easy to transfer it to an Edward Jones IRA and begin receiving the face-to-face guidance you deserve.

Cresswind Education Committee Nothing is possible until the Cresswind Clubhouse lockdown is rescinded.

POSSIBLE - Upcoming Events for May

Each year the Education Committee has sponsored the Cresswind Public Safety Appreciation Brunch. This year it will be held on May 19th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am in the Crow’s Nest.

The Gainesville Fire Department and Hall County Fire Station 4 plus the Gainesville Police Department are invited to this brunch. Many of us do not know that the Gainesville Police receive the Cresswind Daily Update. When big events are occurring, the Gainesville Police are patrolling our community. Many of our residents have experienced the rapid response of the EMTs and firemen. We are asking for either money or gift cards so we can give each public safety officer an amount equal to $25. A secure Education Committee mailbox at the clubhouse will be available for the donations. Please place your donation in an envelope with your name and address so we may send you a thank you.

Resident News

The President’s View

Hello Fellow Cresswind Residents – I almost find myself at a loss for words as we make our way though one of the most difficult periods we have ever known. We have been and will likely face more sobering times as we recover from the deadly Coronavirus Pandemic – a period in our history which we will not forget. These recent events are emblazoned in our minds and hearts as we reflect upon the pain and suffering many have gone through. We, of course, applaud and celebrate the bravery so many exhibited by their caring, service, volunteering, and certainly those medical and public service professionals for whom many owe their lives to. I have and will always be optimistic that we are all resilient and will weather these times. We need remember that as we move forward with optimism and hope for the future, lest we not quickly forget the past and not make adequate plans and preparations for any future challenges of this magnitude.

We have all had time for retrospective contemplation and quiet thought and reflection. We took the appropriate steps to be safe and assist our friends, neighbors, and families. I know I have evaluated the more important aspects of our lives – namely our families and friends, our health and future plans as well as examine our courage

and fortitude to weather times like this. I am glad that we are moving past what appears to have been the worst of times to achieve a new normal for each of us and our families.

Our community which is Cresswind Strong has stepped up to exhibit exemplary behavior and cooperative spirit. We have continued our Charitable Spirit with our local and community wide efforts, which we are known for. I am proud to be a resident of Cresswind and believe we are continuing to work through these trying times. Work has continued to keep our community on track – maintenance – cleaning – setting plans in place to continue our journey forward. Those activities must and will continue to organize for the eventual reopening of our amenities and a re-establishing a new norm. I believe it will take some time and effort to reset our activities and behaviors, but I know we are up to the challenge. We all know that this shall pass and our community spirit and volunteer and charitable values will continue. Please stay safe and healthy and continue to follow the best practices we have all put in place. Regards,

Dan Gershkowitz

Bible Study Club By Dave Dittmeier

I’ll Get Through it Every Time Some say they’ve seen the other side and there’s nothing to compare, to the peace and joy and happiness, that’s waiting for us there. When the burdens of this world, weigh heavy on my mind, I look up to the heavens and I get through it every time.

CHORUS

I’ll get through it every time, there’s no mountain I can’t climb. When it’s meant to be, eventually everything will work out fine. Whatever problems may arise, will be a blessing in disguise, I trust that God will help me to get through it every time. Should life become unpleasant and peace be hard to find. I’ll count my many blessings and I’ll get through it every time. I am a cherished child of God and He is always on my mind. I trust that He will help me, to get through it every time.

Adventures in Dining – Gourmet Dinner Group By Karen Silverthorn

The eighth year of Cresswind’s Gourmet Dinner Group has wrapped up until the fall. Our next scheduled ‘sitdown’ meal will be October 3, 2020. In the meantime, the steering committee will be reviewing menus for the 2020-2021 season. If you have any great menus to consider, simply submit a paper or electronic copy to any of the following members on the Dinner Group Steering Committee: Ann Horne, Judy Brannan, Susan Kooistra, Pam Papciak, Regina Fuller, Mary Quisenberry. Currently there are over 160 members on the Dinner Group roster. But if you are new to Cresswind or just wish to try a different group, please know that anyone can join at any time during the year, but annual membership in the Cooking Club is required. Members gather four times a year to enjoy great gourmet meals while meeting new neighbors and making friends. But this group may not be for everyone. The Gourmet Dinner Group differs from a casual or neighborhood gathering. Host houses put time and thought into making their ‘tablescapes’ elegant and appropriately themed and memorable for their guests. Menus are chosen by the Steering Committee that are more elaborate and often use unusual or challenging ingredients.

If you are interested in joining, email the coordinator directly (Karen Silverthorn, silk3349@charter. net) to be added to the Gourmet Dinner Group email list. Our mission is a simple one - to enjoy a delicious gourmet meal while meeting new neighbors around an elegant dinner table. Every meal is an adventure!

There are always a total of four couples/pairs of people at each host home. Each couple/pair is assigned part of the meal to prepare. For each meal, all recipes are provided. For each dinner, we average 6 - 8 houses on the same evening, each using the same recipes and making the same courses. All food and beverage costs (average $45 - $65 per pair/couple) are shared equally among participants at each house.

Investment Club Update

By Janet Nelson

Cresswind Investment Club (CIC) seems to be where the action is this year! During this period of confinement, we are watching the market roller coaster and trying to determine which stocks would be a good ride. In January, each member chose two stocks to recommend and we divided into small groups to analyze them as a potential investment, subsequently making several purchases when the market dropped. Currently, we are holding virtual meetings on “Zoom.”

Some of you may have attended the program and luncheon in February sponsored by Jeffrey Sulka of Edward Jones, “Review of 2109 and Outlook for 2020,” which had favorable feedback! We expect to be past the viral scare by fall for our final community program. Finally, we enjoy a holiday and summer party each year. We invite anyone who is interested to visit a meeting, which is the first Monday of each month (except holidays) at 1:00 pm. For additional information, please contact Janet Nelson, jnotesto87@gmail.com, or Leo Cortjens, leo.cortjens@gmail.com.

Bowling League News

Submitted by Dave Dittmeier

by Jim Cook

I climbed my family tree and found it was not worth the climb;

And so, I scampered down, convinced it was a waste of time. Some branches of my tree, I found, were rotten to the core.

And, all the tree was full of sap and hung with nuts galore!

I used to brag of my kinfolk, before I made the climb,

But truth compels me not to tell of those not worth a dime. And I beg friends who boast aloud of their ancestors great, To climb their family tree and learn of those who weren’t so straight. I’ve learned what family trees are like, I’ve seen the, growing ‘round.

They’re like a ‘tater’ vine because, the best are underground! Author Unknown

The Cresswind Bowling League completed 11 weeks of the second half of the bowling season before the last three weeks were cancelled due to the COVID-19 crisis. The end of season Bowling Banquet which was scheduled for April 22nd was also cancelled. Final results for the 2019-2020 season will be announced when the bowling alley reopens after the COVID-19 crisis has passed. We hope everyone is staying safe during this time and we hope we will be bowling again next fall.

Fishing Club News By Gus Brown

The fish are biting well but with our “social distancing” it has been a solitary undertaking to go after them. Dean Travis built and put up a carpenter bee trap to limit the damage the bees are doing to the marina pavilion. We managed to turn that into a “guess the number of bees caught” contest. Congratulations to winner Jack Connolly. His deck will soon be safe from the dreaded carpenter bees thanks to this beautiful popular wood prize made by Dean Travis Gus Brown featuring a Jean Travis wood burned design that makes it look like a small house in the woods.

Cresswind Tennis By Sandy Barmak

This spring has been a unique season for our tennis club and all of Cresswind. The competitive team season for Women’s USTA, Men’s Silverball, and ALTA began in early March and the women played three matches and the men each played one match. Alas, the seriousness of the Coronavirus Pandemic then became apparent and the need to isolate and “social distance” was recognized causing every league to suspend their season.

We were lucky to hold some winter tennis clinics before the health crisis began. Tennis Clinics will start again once health and safety emergency guidelines and “social distancing” recommendations are lifted. Here are some recommendations on what you can do to stay in “tennis shape” during these times from our community tennis instructor extraordinaire, Bill Papciak billpapciak@ gmail.com. 1. Walk frequently. Normal short strides, and occasionally take a series of long-bending strides to stretch it out. 2. Go outside (or inside) every other day and work on all your strokes to keep your body, arms, legs “remembering” tennis. Do 100 forehand, backhand, overhead, volley, serve (bend and hit, follow through, visualize hitting the ball). 3. Go online and find Tennis Tutorials of all the strokes and

doubles strategy and play. Enjoy them, then go practice them. Bill thanks his tennis instructor-teammates Harry Takemura, Jeff Agnew, Gordon Watts, Mike Marsico, Jim Snell, John Ulam who have helped with Clinics over recent months making them helpful, interesting and fun! Stay Healthy and Fit Everyone! Hopefully, by the time you read this, we will be out playing tennis again. Be sure to check our tennis website, https:// cresswindll.wixsite.com/cwtennis for updated information or contact Sandy Barmak, sandybarmak@gmail.com, president. If the world is still on pause, we should all do our best to stay healthy, exercise and abide by the CDC recommendations and hope that the COVID-19 Pandemic soon subsides.

Cresswind Chorus presents: SUMMER MUSIC SPECTACULAR

By Chuck Bridwell Last January, our 130-voice Cresswind Community Chorus began preparing for its annual Spring Music Spectacular which was to be presented April 23rd through April 26th. Rehearsals were going great in January and February. Then came the Coronavirus pandemic and the closing of the Cresswind clubhouse which will prevent the spring chorus event. So, ladies and gentlemen, we present to you the first ever . . . Summer Music Spectacular. Mark the dates, June 23rd through June 26th on your calendar. The hope is that the clubhouse will open in time for rehearsals to begin again in May. There are no guarantees, but we are optimistic that this will happen. Even if rehearsals do not happen again until June, we can make this happen with extra rehearsals. Thanks for your outstanding support of the Cresswind Community Chorus through its six-year history. The best is yet to come.

News Update from the Cooking Club By Lisa Giblin

I am writing this article from the comfort of my kitchen island. It has been quite a challenging several weeks as we all follow social distancing.

The Cooking Club hosted our St Patrick’s Day event in March. Due to the impact of the Coronavirus, we changed to a food “Take Home” format. This did not keep us from still displaying our Irish Spirit as you can see from our photos. As far as coming events, we have postponed our April schedule. This includes our Cooking Classes which were created to use our kitchen facilities.

We have cancelled the Kentucky Derby on May 2nd and will reschedule it for 2021. The Murder Mystery Dinners and Fish Fry will be evaluated for future dates. We are currently hoping to keep the Garden to Table event for June 27th on the books but will see what the future brings.

Rest assured we will come back strong once it is safe for us all to be together.

International Missions Club By Tom Flaim

FRUSTRATING! Your International Missions Club was all set to be on a Missions Excursion to the Dominican Republic this week until the Covid bug bit our travel plans. We were all grateful that all of our airfares, hotels, and ground transportation cost was returned to us. Many in the community had provided sponsorship donations to help with the cost of the trip, and supplies were gathered for gifts to the ultra-poor children we were set to serve. We are all saving those donations and gifts and will be putting them against the cost for our rescheduled trip from November 12th to November 17th . This trip is open up to anyone else that would like to come. Please contact Tom Flaim at 770.241.0037 or tflaim@ wateratworkministry.org if you have an interest. Like everyone else, regular meetings will resume when we are enabled. Stay healthy!

Pickleball News

By Wendy Warder Pickleball, as most everything else, has ground to a halt during this strange and frightening time. We reflect back to happier, more social days… and look forward to the time – hopefully soon - when we can all gather again to play our favorite sport and socialize with one another. Our Valentine’s Dinner/Dance was a HUGE success! From the decorations…. to the entertainment (Betty Seni)… to the delicious meal (Cucina Milano), it was a night to remember!

While our spring tournaments, leagues and novice training have all been postponed, we did enjoy two weekends of drills with a local Pickleball Pro in late February. We held 12 sessions of 8-person groups – so a total of 96 coaching spots were enjoyed by our membership!

Once this crisis is behind us, we look forward to bringing you a full schedule of events. As always, all things Pickleball can be found on the Pickleball website: (www.cresswindpickleball.com) Page 30 | The Waterfall | May/June

RV Club By Karen Silverthorn

Two trips in March kick off the R.V. Club’s 2020 camping season. Rigs will travel to southwest Georgia for a week in early March to Americus Brickyard Plantation where we will definitely explore the Andersonville National Historic site. Later in the month, campers will spend March 22nd – 29th touring the Charleston area and enjoying some great coastal sights and restaurants. We take a break from group campouts over the summer and then have another two great trips scheduled for the fall. Join us in Townsend and Cades Cove, Tennessee, September 23rd – 30th. Then we travel south to Orange Beach, Alabama, November 15th – 22nd in search of some warmer days. Throughout the year, R.V. Club members gather for social evenings and to discuss trip destinations. Check the R.V. Club website (https://sites.google.com/ site/cllrvclub) for all the scheduled trips. Reminder to all members...notify us via the Gmail account whenever you book any of these trips! Do you have an R.V.? Let us know if you are interested in joining the RV Club. Please email: cll.rvclub@gmail.com. The Steering Committee welcomes comments and trip suggestions! Cresswind Neighborhood Theatre News By Wayne Blum

The spring productions of “Murder Room” and “Murder in the Air” did not go as planned…. but you know why. So, we have moved them to tentative dates. The Dinner Mystery Theater offer of “Murder in the Air” has been rescheduled for July 29th and 30th. The spring production of “Murder Room” is now scheduled for the fall. The new dates are November 12th through November 15th. The third offering “Always Patsy Cline” is still scheduled for August 20th through August 23rd. Hope to see you all there! These past and future productions are not possible without the combined efforts of actors, sound and lighting, costume designers, set decorators, chorus, dancers, house management, and many other volunteers. In fact, it took well over 100 volunteers for our last play! If you are new to the neighborhood or have been around for some time and want to get involved with the theater please contact Wayne Blum at theblums@charter.net. No experience is necessary. If you do not want to try acting there is plenty to do “behind the scenes.”

What’s Happening

The Quilting Club By Evelyne Palmer

The Quilting Club members took a less-traditional approach to planning their events in 2020. We have been together for quite a number of years and each of us have different strengths and talents. We began with a survey put together by Flo Schwartz, Rose Hosey, and Susan Hopkins offering challenges each month or quarter to participate in projects demonstrated or presented by members that we would not have normally done on our own. This has proven to be challenging and a lot of fun. We enjoyed our most recent outings in March by attending the Bullloch Hall Art Quilt Show inspired by endangered species and the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo. We are also taking one meeting a quarter to get to catch up with each other by having a “birthday celebration”. Each meeting starts out with “show and tell” and see the creativity in the work reflecting these new ideas. An unexpected project was the Heart Block Quilt. When we started, we had no idea that the project would grow into a celebration quilt for a teenage family member completing chemo for cancer. The blocks were beautifully made by members and finished and quilted by Mary Parsons. We are continuing to support our Seniors in Need through Legacy Link delivering a total of 168 quilts to date. Our members have spent the last two months sewing and quilting in their homes and we will have another delivery when we return to the Clubhouse. The Quilts for Kids project has also benefited. We received a fabric donation from a resident, which is always appreciated and were able to pass on some suitable fabric for the community efforts by many residents in making cloth masks. In anticipation of the Holiday Bazaar, we are busy working on our Quilt, selecting patterns, and other projects to enable us to continue our efforts. We welcome any resident to stop by and share their

We meet every Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Arts and Craft room. Stop by, meet us and see the work we do. We do many quilting related projects, big and small, work at individual levels, and have fun! Community Travel Club By Laurie Homa

Our February trip to the Booth Western Museum was very memorable. Who knew we had this magnificent display of Western Art and Sculptures in North Georgia? Even the rain could not dampen the fun time had by all.

Then the rains really came in the disguise of Covid 19. Our trips for March, April, and May were cancelled by the venues in the best interest of everyone’s health. Your Travel Club Board met the end of March via Zoom to continue planning and making decisions for travel going forward. When venues and tours open again, we will be rescheduling The Taste of Gainesville and the Atlanta History Center trips for this fall. At the time of writing this article, we are still looking forward to our July outing to watch the Atlanta United Soccer game. In September, it is back to baseball to cheer our Atlanta Braves when they play the New York Mets.

We are working with Daniels Discovery Tours for our December get away to Asheville, North Carolina. The trip will include a candlelight tour and dinner at the exquisitely

decorated Biltmore House. There are many unique things to do in Asheville as well, Brewhouse tours, Christmas shops, and glassblowing demos just to name a few. So put December 8th on your calendar.

In the meantime, you can travel in place by finally arranging those photo albums of your past excursions from near and far. Remember that bottle of French wine you carried home for a special occasion or the Cuban cigar. Celebrate that trip again. Open the bottle, enjoy the cigar. Are you still saving that grass skirt and coconut bra you bought in Hawaii? Put on some Hawaiian music, cook pineapple pork, light a few candles and wear your grass skirt.

Please know your Board is working to continue our traveling adventures and will be ready to go “On the Road Again,” when the venues open. Our next General Meeting is scheduled for May 7th in the Ballroom at 4:00 pm.

Small band news By John Kelley

Social distancing has required folks to get more creative to make music together whether that is marking off 6 feet “safe distances” in Sweet Magnolia cul de sac for a jam session, playing on the porch for neighbors or posting their homemade efforts on line. Brian Olson has a series of Jazz at Cresswind clips posted on the Cresswind LL Facebook page. Check them out. Some are very good and all are at least interesting. Dust off those musical instruments in the closet; we have the time to “woodshed” a little with the hopes of being to actually play together soon. Page 42 | The Waterfall | May/June

STAYING SOCIAL FROM A SAFE DISTANCE By Susan Lahey

April is the month that Social Singles celebrate the “new year.” Accordingly, we are celebrating the introduction of a new board of directors, who have already been hard at work coming up with ways to “stay social” without meetings or activities. 2020-2021 Board

President – Cindy Laney VP – Larry Goldberger

Secretary – Susan Lahey

Treasurer – Pat DeGrow

Members at Large – Lynn Blaylock, Angie Caudill, Nancy Gladwell, Stan Goldman, and Andrea Marra Past President – Elaine Vetter

One of the best ways we have found to stay in touch is with ZOOM meetings organized by member Fred Pescitelli. We chat three times a week and our group continues to grow. We enjoy catching up with each while discussing ways we are keeping busy in these challenging times. If singles are interested in participating, please contact fred.pescitelli@gmail.com to be included in the conversation group. In early March, members traveled to Asheville NC, for two days to tour the Downton Abbey Exhibit at the Biltmore Estate and to sample the fine food and craft beer for which

Slot Car Club News By Ron Parker

The Slot Car Club began its second season this past January with 22 drivers competing on a table-top course of nearly 140 feet of hairpin turns and straightaways. Unfortunately racing had to be suspended in March due to the COVID-19 virus. At that time, after 27 races, the top point leaders were Bill St. George (551), Marty Prah (495), Ron Craddock (464), Pat Hiebel (463), and John Meyer (435). We hope to finish the season, later in the summer; otherwise we will start Season 3 in the fall. Residents interested in racing next season can contact Ron Parker at scwidq@gmail.com Page 44 | The Waterfall | May/June

Asheville has become renowned. In our last event before the clubhouse closed, we hosted a very successful “Breakfast for Dinner,” catered by The Colored Egg. Entertainment was provided by Cresswind’s talented jazz band. We did not know that it would be our last gathering for a while, but it was great that it ended on such a high note!

Ping Pong Club News By Jim Cook

The Ping Pong Club held a Social/ Drop-In Tournament on Monday, March 9th. The format was roundrobin doubles play with the top points individuals declared the winners. The Intermediate Division winner was Pat Fagan with 65 points and James Burzotta finished second with 52 points. The Advanced Division winner was Ken Levine with 59 points with Greg Pike and Jim Cook finishing second with 58 points each. We hope everyone is staying safe during the COVID-19 crisis and we hope to see everyone back on the ping pong tables when it is safe to do so.

Greetings from the Garden!

By Sarah Galshack All the daffodils, hyacinth bulbs and spring bloomers in Common Ground sure missed the “shelter in place” message. They did as they probably have done for hundreds of years; they burst forth with beautiful spring blooms. This year especially, I think they added some bright spots to what have been some worrisome days here in the neighborhood. And as the garden awakens, it is fun to take in the perennials that are making their entrance and all the gardeners

buzzing about with their compost and seeds and transplants hoping for a bountiful harvest this summer. There is something magical about a garden and about the folks that care for it. You may have noticed or heard that the wooded area next to Common Ground is transforming into the Serenity Garden. This project has been a twinkle in some Cresswind gardener’s eyes for a few years, but it has really gained some wind beneath its wings this spring. The trails have been laid out and are walkable. As you stroll through you will notice that native shrubs and trees have begun to be planted. No easy task with all the established large tree root systems. You will see native understory trees like dogwoods and grancy gray beards and shrubs like azaleas and beauty berries. It will be lovely when these natives have had a chance to grow and flourish. So, take a stroll and have a look at these new natives and enjoy watching this garden grow!

Living Stylishly with Neighbors By Sue Garcia

We regret cancelling the Floral Demonstration and luncheon as well as our trip to the Americas Mart. These activities will be rescheduled as soon as possible. We look forward to planning the last half of 2020 with new and entertaining activities. We are always looking for suggestions and new ideas from our members. Hope all are coping with the uncertainty of the times we face today. Please stay safe and healthy. See you all soon.
